Born in New Jersey, Yoram Raanan has traveled and studied independently throughout Europe and the Near East. In 1977 he settled in Israel and opened his first studio in the Bukharim Quarter in Jerusalem. Since 1994, he has been creating art on his farm in the Judean hills of the Jerusalem Corridor. Raanan’s paintings are a modern expression of Jewish collective consciousness. Characterized by intuition and imagination and inspired by nature, the Bible and the Land of Israel. Raanan brings a strong sense of light, colour and spirituality to the art featured on the cover entitled, Menorah Sky.

Maybe the phrase was invented by Manischewitz as a way of promoting its sweet wines.

A few days ago, after minyan, a member from shul said to me: “Was there a Covid 19 virus?” It was another way of saying – life is back to normal and the virus is far behind us, almost totally forgotten. After this conversation, I thought to myself – Jewish faith tells us that everything that happens to us – comes from above and sends us a message: How to behave in life? When Covid was at its peak in Israel (and the whole world), minyans were taking place out in the streets. We were separated, standing, two meters apart, wearing masks and hardly breathing. I remember a Rabbi that said a comment during prayer: “I wish we will all behave after the virus with the same humbleness, respect and honesty as we do now”. It looks like life’s back to normal, as if we’ve forgotten what happened in the world only a few months ago. I understand it was a horrible time, and we want to put it far away in our minds. However, I think that we should remember, and learn from the time, when the world stopped completely. Every person then stopped and asked the question: “What’s happening here? Where do we go from here…?” This is what we, as Jewish people, specialize in: remembrance, Gedenk (in Yiddish). It is because we remember our past (and learn from it) that we will always survive the future (this is not my quote but NAPOLEON’s – when he was in Israel and witnessed the strength of the Jewish tradition despite the horrible conditions they were living in at the time). We remember Passover, we remember being slaves, we remember being freed of slavery and bursting into independence and rebuilding our wonderful flourishing country and home, Israel. In all times, we remember all of our history and our past. Do you remember? Are you holding the long chain of Jewish tradition? Do you belong to it? YES YOU DO! Every Kiddush we remember exiting Egypt, every time we put on Tefillin, every time we kiss the Mezuzah, every Passover Seder, every prayer, every night, and every day, every moment forever. Chag Sameach.

Freedom Mark Merson, President How lucky we are to be part of the Shaare Zedek Congregation and the Montreal Jewish Community. As I look around the world I see the erosion of democracy, the loss of basic civil liberties and the suffering from natural and man-made disasters. The war in Ukraine, the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the shootings and beatings in Canada and the US by both civilians and police, the removal of books from libraries, the eradication of the right of women to choose in several US states, the election of a new government in Israel that threatens democracy and the loss of English language rights, right here in Quebec. At Passover, we as a family, as a congregation and as a community share in rituals and traditions. We relive the Exodus and remember the miracles. We offer prayers for the blessing of freedom. On this Passover 5783 it is more important than ever for us to celebrate our freedom and affirm the right of all individuals to that freedom. Chag Pesach Sameach.

Message from our Executive Director Billy Booth, Executive Director Weddings, Bar & Bat Mitzvahs, Baby Namings, Auf Rufs, Call-ups, Shabbat and Daily services and more. It’s been a joy to welcome so many families celebrating milestone events. Thankfully, the worst of the pandemic seems to be behind us and events are happening all the time. We continue to automate our systems which have been very successful thanks to so many of you accessing your ShulCloud accounts online. Not only can you make donations, you also have access to all lifecycle events including Yahrzeits to honour loved ones. Wendy Tessler keeps things running smoothly coordinating the Rabbi’s schedule as well as juggling many tasks in the office including being the primary coordinator and editor of the Koleinu. Her skilled eye catches things that others miss. Sara Watson, Bookkeeper, is responsible for daily finances and also wears multiple hats to guarantee that food is ordered and staff arranged for each event. No one leaves Shaare Zedek hungry. Throughout, Roberto Ortiz, Superintendent, keeps a cool head during small or large events to ensure the building is maintained and all systems are functioning. We are fortunate to have a strong Board of Directors along with many volunteers to plan and coordinate events. Special thanks to Lili Yesovitch for her regular help in the office which is always done with a smile. The Koleinu that you are holding is the result of tremendous work from Cara Merson and Jasmine Ovadia for their fantastic conception and design. Thanks to everyone for a labour of love.
Torah Class Elizabeth Bright Our Torah class is progressing through the Book of Vayikra. We are almost done, which means we have completed three of the five books of Moses. Our class has also grown. New students have joined since the last Koleinu was published. When you think you have read the same stories over and over again, and that things are no longer relevant, I challenge you then to join our discussions and see how much we learn. The Torah is timeless and relevant to any time period and in most situations. How lucky we are! I look forward to the continuation of this 20-year-old tradition of sharing the love of Torah at Shaare Zedek. I am particularly grateful to the students who continue to come and support Torah learning. If you are not able to join our class, look out for the Parsha of the Week that is printed in the weekly Shabbat flyer. This overview of the Torah portion is a brief synopsis with the Elizabeth Bright twist on the Parsha.

Religious Services Committee Dr. Michael Wasser Looking back from the start of 5783, there are many positive things to report. Our High Holy Days Services were very well attended, both in person and online. The services themselves were inspiring, led by Rabbi Bright, Cantor Boaz Davidoff and Chazzan Sheini Ariel Krispine. Our Shabbat services are also doing well, benefitting from new members. As for the daily minyans, while they have been improving, they still have a ways to go to recover to their pre-pandemic state. However, we are currently sharing daily minyans with Shaare Zion BethEl since late December. This is going well with consistent minyans every morning and evening. Our recent change to a greater inclusion of women in the services is also proceeding nicely, with women participating not only in the Shabbat services but also in the daily minyans. Cantor Boaz joined us from Tu B’Shevat to Purim. When Boaz is here, we all profit, not just from his musical abilities, but from his enthusiasm and his uplifting spirituality. SZ Sisterhood Carole Burke, Sisterhood Representative to the Board We have cautiously begun to emerge from hibernation. For Book Club, we meet in person, and on zoom. Before the Provincial Election, we welcomed Robert Libman who provided an interesting overview of the parties’ positions. We continue to provide gifts for a growing number of Bar/Bat mitzvah students. We also provided non-violent toys at the Toy Tea. At this event we met with staff from women’s shelters in Montreal who select appropriate gifts for the mothers to give to their children for Chanukah and Christmas. This year Sisterhood also supported the Chanukah Drive for Chai Lifeline Canada. These gifts go to a sick child. In January, a Master’s student in archival studies was brought on to help organize the Sisterhood Archives. This is part of a larger initiative by Norman Spatz, who secured a provincial grant for Shaare Zedek. We are grateful to him. We thank Rabbi Bright for his support. We thank Executive Director Billy Booth, Wendy and Sara in the office. We thank Roberto and Munirah, our Maintenance Department. Sisterhood could not manage without their kindness and help. Special Book Presentation The Shaare Zedek sisterhood book club invites one and all to our season-ending meeting on Monday, May 8 at 1 PM. We will celebrate the recent publication of Norm Spatz’s novel, Shul for Scandal. He will be present to talk about the creation of his book and read excerpts from it. Copies will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served. Join us for a wonderful afternoon and welcome to spring. Born in New Jersey, Norm Spatz arrived in Montreal in the early part of the Seventies. Norm spent a decade and a half working in Montreal as an architect specializing in residential renovation. In 1989 he became a CÉGEP teacher. Norm developed walking tours, notably one focusing on the history of neighbourhoods in the west central districts of Montreal which currently have large Jewish populations. Retired in 2015, Norm now has time for other activities such as writing novels including ‘Training for Trust’, ‘Greed and Opportunity’ and “Shul for Scandal’.

Chocolate Mud Cookies Ingredients 2¾ cups walnuts, whole 3 cups powdered sugar ⅔ cup cocoa powder, natural or dutch-process ½ teaspoon kosher salt 4 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract sea salt flakes, optional Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F with two racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. Spread the walnuts on a lined baking pan. Toast them for about 9 minutes, until they are golden. Cool, then coarsely chop. Lower the oven temperature to 325°F. Line two sheet baking pans with parchment or silicone mat. If you’re using parchment, spray it with baking spray so the cookies don’t stick. Sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder into a large bowl, then whisk to combine. Stir in the salt, then the chopped walnuts. Mix in the egg whites and vanilla extract until the batter is just moistened. Don’t over-mix the batter or it will stiffen. Scoop one tablespoon of the batter in evenly-spaced mounds. Let the batter dry at room temperature on their trays for 30 to 60 minutes before baking. Bake the cookies for 14 to 16 minutes, until the tops are glossy and lightly cracked. Rotate the pans and swap their positions in the oven halfway through to ensure even baking. After the cookies come out of the oven, lightly sprinkle them with sea salt flakes. Let cookies cool completely on the pan. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients 1 egg 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup oil 1 1/2 cups almond flour 1/2 cup potato starch 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup chocolate chips Flaked salt Directions Cream egg, sugar and oil. Add in almond flour, potato starch and vanilla and mix well. Fold in chocolate chips. Freeze dough for 10-15 minutes. Roll into 24 balls (keep them small for crispy edges) and sprinkle with flaked salt.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Past Events Alpaca Farm Visit The SZ group gathered together in September at Project Pace Farm in Ile-Bizard. The farm is home to many fascinating animals including chickens, bunnies, alpacas, sheep, goats, miniature horses, and a fun-loving duck named Luigi! B’nai Mitzvot 5783 Reuben Alter Son of Lori-Ann Gilman May 20, 2023 - Parashat Bamidbar Hi, my name is Reuben and I am in grade 7 at LCC. I enjoy playing basketball and solving different sized Rubik’s cubes. Chanukah is my favorite Jewish holiday because it is so much fun eating latkes, getting gifts, and spending time with my whole extended family. Aside from latkes, I look forward to my mother’s matzo ball soup on the holidays, and I also share a love for meatballs with my dad. By far, my favourite Jewish tradition is celebrating the holidays with my family around the dinner table, making jokes and eating delicious food.

My passions are school, my friends, and horseback riding. If I’m not with my friends, you can find me at the barn, where I ride horses three times a week. I compete in show jumping. I’ve been riding since I was seven years old. Passover is my favourite holiday because we get to read the entire Haggadah and I get to hear all about my ancestors crossing the desert. I especially enjoy the tradition of singing bibilou at our seder. Shabbat is my favourite Jewish tradition because it allows me to spend time with my family, Oma and Opa.
Isaiah Whyte Son of Esther Schwartz and Fidel Whyte June 10, 2023 - Parashat Beha’alotcha Isaiah is fun-loving, creative, and adventurous. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he is a black belt in tae kwon do, runs cross country for his school, and plays on a flag football team. He is sharing his Bar Mitzvah with his great grandmother’s sister, Judith, who wasn’t able to have her Bat Mitzvah because she perished in the Holocaust. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Isaiah is raising funds for the NICU at the JGH hospital, as he himself spent five weeks there as

I like to play video games and play baseball. My favourite Jewish holiday is Chanukah because of the gifts. My favourite holiday food is challah bread and matzah. My favourite Jewish tradition celebrating with my family is lighting the menorah and reciting the prayers.
Noah Hoffman Son of Heidi and Levi Hoffman September 4, 2023 - Parashat Nitzavim-Vayeilech Noah recently graduated from JPPS Elementary School and is now attending Bialik Secondary School where he spends his time studying, playing chess, attending 3D printing club, being a part of the curling team and so much more! His love of school and friends is preceded by his love of video games, particularly Splatoon 3! He also is a huge fan of Chanukah, primarily due to the fantastic sufganiot which he enjoys dearly. He also loves lighting the chanukiah and playing dreidel along with his little twin sisters.
Chase Adler Son of Jefferson Adler September 9, 2023 - Parashat Nitzavim-Vayeilech Chase is presently in grade 7 at West Island College in DDO. His favourite pastimes include soccer, parcours, and skiing up north while staying at his Zaida’s cottage. Chase’s favourite holiday is Chanukah because he loves to light the candles and see the family. His favourite holiday food is Matza ball soup made by his dad or Sandy. He even helps out to make the matza balls himself! Chase loves the Passover tradition of searching for the Afikomen and spending time with his family whilst figuring out the clues! You will always find Chase with a smile on his face and ready to be a friend for someone in need. He is as close as can be with his older brother Carson, and has a lot of really good friends from elementary and high school.

The Coronation and Us Carole Burke I was 14 at the last coronation. My family and I went to London to stay with my aunt and uncle and cousins. They had a television and we had quite a long holiday for the Coronation. For weeks we had been hearing about all the arrangements, and my brother and I were so excited to be in London, even if we were not invited to the palace. We children were in sleeping bags because we were in a 3 1/2 apartment! We could hear the rain tapping on the windows. It poured but nobody cared. People camped out for days for a glimpse of the Queen. On coronation morning we learned that Hillary and Tensing had reached the top of Mount Everest! Then we settled down to watch. I was in awe of the processions, the choirs, the bands and the ceremony itself. After the Queen was crowned, all the princes and dukes had to swear allegiance to her starting with Prince Philip. Before the annointing, she took off her robes and all the regalia and put on a simple white dress over her heautiful dress. Broadcasting major events was very new and people were literally up in trees! When the Mounties came down the Mall, the Canadian commentator who lived in England almost fell out of his perch with excitement. There were fireworks with set pieces. Remember: I was a just prewar baby. I had never seen anything like it! In the next few days our parents took us into downtown London to see the sights. I will never forget it. As it turned out the cousin we stayed with ended up in Ottawa with her family. We speak at least once a week and visit. So this morning I told her what I was doing and we suddenly became two awestruck little girls remembering. What we could not remember was what we ate that day! Our mothers must have fed us! A few months after the Coronation I was reading something about scripture and I made this amazing discovery! Zadok was our Zadok. My religious knowledge was not fully developed and I assumed a priest was either Catholic or Protestant! On May 6, 2023, King Charles III will be crowned in a ceremony which dates back to 937AD. After the Norman Conquest, William I chose to be crowned in Westminster Abbey to indicate that he was the lawful heir to Edward the Confessor. It is a Christian ceremony. Charles III is the defender of the faith (Anglican) and must take the Coronation Oath to guarantee that. Nonetheless, there are traces of Judaism in the ceremony itself. Since the coronation of Charles I, monarchs have entered the Abbey to the words of Psalm 122: “I was glad when they said unto me we will go into the House of the Lord”. Music composed by Sir Hubert Parry for the coronation of Edward VII is used. The monarch, seated on the Coronation Chair, is annointed with holy oil. A canopy is brought to keep this most sacred ceremony private. During the ceremony the choir sings the anthem “Zadok the Priest”. While the words date back to 937AD, in 1727 George II chose George Frederick Handel to compose the version which has been heard since. 1KINGS 1 34-45 “Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet annointed King Solomon and all the people rejoiced and said GOD SAVE THE KING! LONG LIVE THE KING! GOD SAVE THE KING! MAY THE KING LIVE FOREVER! AMEN HALLELUYA.” When the Queen left the Abbey on June 2, 1953 the congregation sang a hymn which began: “All people who on earth do dwell sing to the Lord with cheerful voice!” The hymn is called the Old Hundredth. It is based on Psalm 100 which we say almost every day at Shacharit. As we remember with love Queen Elizabeth II, let us welcome with love King Charles III.

B’nai Mitzvah Program It is with great pride and pleasure that we restarted the B’nai Mitzvah Program at Shaare Zedek. A dedicated committee worked hard to create a dynamic program that is fun, educational, and inspirational for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah child as well as their entire families. This group includes all of the B’nai Mitzvah families celebrating in 2022-2023. This life cycle event is unique to our Jewish religion and culture, and we want this experience to be one that the families will always remember and cherish. Through a number of diverse experiences and projects, the kids will learn the importance of being part of a Jewish community, understand synagogue rituals and traditions, and reflect on what it means to be Jewish. We will be meeting monthly at Shaare Zedek and off-site for a diverse schedule of events including a Movie Night, a visit to the Holocaust Museum, a speaker from Auberge Shalom (women’s shelter), a basketball game at the YM-YWHA and a visit to Paperman & Sons Funeral Home. Every child will do a Mitzvah (good deed) Project. They will need to find something they are interested in, are good at, or some way to help others. They will present to everyone at an Oneg Shabbat and Family Dinner with parents, siblings, grandparents in May 2023.
