Pesach - What Does it Mean for Conservative Jews? Rabbi Alan W. Bright
W
ith the approach of Passover, food becomes a topic of great interest for most Jews.

We clean and scrub our kitchens, we remove all chametz from our homes, we plan a seder, and we figure out what we’re going to eat for eight days when bread, pasta, pizza, and our favourite breakfast cereals are no longer on the menu.
Here’s one area where the Conservative approach to halacha varies from the Orthodox. The Orthodox approach is to continue a custom, even if it’s a foolish one, even if the times have changed, simply because it’s minhag avoteinu, the custom of our ancestors. In the Conservative Movement, we’re more open to understanding customs in the light of contemporary life.
The Torah forbids eating chametz during Passover, which the rabbis understand as being any one of the five grains – wheat, rye, barley, spelt, or oats – that has been in contact with water for more than 18 minutes. But for Ashkenazi Jews, the list is much longer. Ashkenazi Jews typically refrain from eating kitniyot during Pesach. What’s included in the definition of kitniyot varies between communities, but it typically includes legumes such as peas, lentils, beans, corn, rice, peanuts, and soy. And for many Canadian Jews, there are additional dietary restrictions they take on themselves all year. Eight percent of Canadians are vegetarian or vegan, suggesting that out of Montreal’s 80,000 Jews, we have 6,400 vegetarians. If we take away chametz, kitniyot, and animal products, there’s not much left for a vegan Kosher Ashkenazi Jew to eat during Passover. Are we really prohibited from eating kitniyot during Pesach? Where does the prohibition come from, anyway? It turns out no one really knows why Ashkenazi Jews don’t eat kitniyot during Pesach. Sephardic Jews never adopted the custom. The custom is first mentioned in writings from the French Jewish community in the early 13th century. Rabbis hate a vacuum, so the sages, after that time, came up with at least 11 different reasons for people to avoid kitniyot. Some of the explanations offered include things such as “maybe there’s wheat mixed in with it,” or “people make bread with it and might get confused.”

Back in 1989, Rabbi David Golinkin in Israel wrote a teshuvah. He concluded that not only was it permissible to do away with a foolish custom; it may even be obligatory. He provided several reasons for doing away with the custom: 1.

It causes exorbitant price increases and is a financial burden
3.
It emphasizes something that does not matter and is not indeed forbidden
4.
It may lessen the respect for the commandments if some of them are acknowledged as foolish
5.
It causes unnecessary divisions between different groups (Ashkenazi and Sefardi) in Israel.
A 2015 teshuvah by Rabbis Amy Levin and Avram Reisner aimed at Jews in North America emphasized the desire to support healthier diets and make it easier for people to eat fewer animal products by eating kitniyot, as well as the fact that any concerns that may have led to the prohibition in the first place are no longer applicable in modern times. One of Passover’s many names is zeman cheruteinu, the time of our freedom. If you find meaning in following the custom of your ancestors to refrain from eating kitniyot during Pesach, that is meritorious. On the other hand, if you prefer to be “Sephardi for Pesach,” whether, for health, convenience, financial, or communal reasons, you may liberate yourself from an unnecessary custom. haare Zedek has been very busy during the pandemic to maintain our building and update our systems. In spite of the frequent changes in Government guidelines on how many people can attend services or

Our online presence via Live Stream and Zoom has been a constant for so many people and allowed us to connect to our members as well as the wider community. It’s quite extraordinary that people from other parts of Canada and USA are joining us on a regular basis for services. Something that would never have happened before the pandemic. Our investment in Audio Visual equipment is very significant with constant upgrades. It is now fully integrated in our daily operations and allows us to broadcast every possible event: services, concerts, weddings, Bar & Bat Mitzvot, raffle, lectures, cooking classes, etc. Our Board of Directors made a bold decision over the past 6 months to embark on a Strategic Study and gain a better understanding of our current membership and how we can grow in the coming years to maintain a vibrant, healthy synagogue. This is a worthy exercise that will surely yield positive results and many changes. We look forward to implementing the recommendations and building stronger programs at Shaare Zedek in the coming years. The integration of ShulCloud operating software has been very successful with many people logging into their accounts and processing payments and donations. In an effort to improve our database, we are asking everyone to log into their account to update name, address, email, phone, Hebrew name, mother and father’s Hebrew names, birthday, anniversary, date of Bar or Mitzvah. You can easily add people to your account (i.e., spouse, children) and provide this information. W
hen my husband Laz Caplan z”l passed away in 2018, I was told that there were no more lighted plaques available at our shul. I also learned that our old electronic Yahrzeit Board hadn’t worked for several
years. The only option was a plaque without a light outside the main Sanctuary. I couldn’t imagine that my children would not have a lit memorial for their dad’s Yahrzeit, so this was the moment when our search for a new Digital Yahrzeit Board began. I worked closely with the Shul to find a solution that would work for our space. Many phone calls and Zoom meetings later, we chose a software company located in New York with tech designers in Israel to create our new electronic board. Our daughters Andrea, Stephanie and their families spent many hours with me searching for the best design and the right dedication to their dad and my beloved husband. Judaism and Jewish traditions were very important to Laz - we sent our daughters to Jewish day schools so they could understand their roots. They are now active members of their Jewish communities and I know that Laz would be very proud. Here we are, almost 4 years later, with a state-of-the-art digital Yahrzeit board installed in our daily chapel. The board has three sections: one for those saying kaddish, one for those commemorating a Yahrzeit that day, and a third for those honouring a Yahrzeit that week. Next time you’re in Shul, please stop by the daily chapel and take a look at the new board. If you have already purchased a memorial plaque, you will be pleased to see the names of your loved ones included on this modern Yahrzeit board. he Pandemic has cramped our style in some ways, but Sisterhood has not been idle! Before the renovations, the Simcha Room (formerly the Bride’s Room), had been furnished many years ago by
Sisterhood. Now we have created a new room, still on the second floor, which we hope will be enjoyed by many. A comfortable sofa, large armchair, makeup table, chairs, mirrors conveniently situated, end tables and artwork have been carefully chosen to make this an inviting place for all ages. Now that there is a need for women’s talaisim, it was fitting that Sisterhood should provide the funds to purchase them. Your annual dues of $36 and donations with which you honour us make everything possible. In short, you, our members, and donors, pay for everything we do together. Thank you for your generosity! Support for the Torah Fund has always been a priority. This year’s event on May 11th will provide funds for the Jewish Theological Seminary where Conservative Rabbis, Cantors and lay teachers are trained. Information will be available soon. ince I wrote to you last, as the new chair of
Shaare Zedek, we can congratulate ourselves on
the Religious Services Committee, it has been
our ability to respond appropriately and bravely to
quite the roller coaster ride. First, everything COVID related was improving. We had much larger in-person services for the High Holidays than we had had the year before. Not only was Rabbi Bright his usual inspiring self, he was also joined by Cantor Boaz Davidoff and Hazzan Sheini Gershon Katz. The former was wonderful and uplifting in his music and the latter was excellent in reading the Torah. And the choir under the direction of Dr. Earl Karanofsky returned and gave their usual tremendous performance. We thank them all for the services, which were joined by those streaming online as well as those in physical attendance. As the autumn progressed people began to feel more comfortable coming to the synagogue in person and the daily minyans were beginning to thrive while the streaming and zoom services remained healthy.

Lili’s Delicious Passover Recipes Mummy’s Passover Sponge (Strawberry Shortcake)
12 eggs separated 3/4 c matzo cake meal 1 c sugar 2 heaping tbsp potato starch (1/4 Cup) 2 tbsp oil Juice of one lemon or one orange Optional: lemon or orange zest (recommended if you are serving the cake without making it into a strawberry shortcake) Preheat oven to 325°F Beat egg whites with 2 tablespoons of sugar until stiff. Set aside. In another bowl, beat yolks with remaining sugar until light. Add juice, oil, cake meal, starch, and zest, if using. Mix on low speed until blended. Fold in the stiff whites (my mother always said to use a wooden spoon) until blended. Put in an UNgreased 10 inch angel food pan (tube pan with removable bottom). Bake for one hour. Invert to cool. This cake makes a beautiful shortcake. Decorate using real whipped cream for dairy or fake for meat meals, and fresh strawberries.
Really Nothing Meringues
1 c egg whites (8 egg whites) 1 c sugar 1 tbsp vanilla For decorating: mini chocolate chips, toasted coconut, chopped nuts, diced dried fruit Preheat oven to 275°F Beat egg whites until frothy. Slowly add the sugar one tablespoon at a time and mix well (approximately 30 seconds) after each addition. Add vanilla and beat until egg whites are stiff. On a lined baking sheet, drop meringues using a tablespoon, or pipe using a pastry bag. Decorate as you like. Bake for 60 minutes, and then turn off the oven. Allow meringues to cool without opening the door. These don’t keep well, so they will need to be eaten soon. Never a problem!

“Latkes with Lili” kicked off our Chanukah festivities! Lili impressed all of us with her remarkable culinary skills while sharing her tips and tricks on how to make the perfect latke. Kids under 12 showed off their creativity by making their own Chanukiahs with molding clay and glow sticks! This year, SZ Congregants opened their homes and driveways to our very own Travelling Rabbi who lit the chanukiah with us over Zoom. Did you light the candles with us? We had a wonderful turnout to celebrate Purim in person! Rabbi Bright shared a contemporary interpretation of the Megillah, while Josh Wolman, our Angel, chanted in Hebrew. Cantor Boaz Davidoff and the amazing Shaare Zedek Band entertained us throughout! Afterwards, Pilots, Leprechauns, Bananas and Hockey Players all gathered to feast on pizza and ice cream (with sprinkles!) while waiting to see what surprises were waiting for us in the piñata!
