20 YEARS FASHION OF HARRY POTTER

A castle on a hill, grand boarding schools, cobbled streets and tales of witches and wizards

I

t’s been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first hit bookshelves across the country but the magic of the award-winning series is as alive as ever, and perhaps no more so than in Edinburgh. A castle on the hill, a handful of grand boarding schools, cobbled streets and tales of witches and wizards that span centuries; it’s easy to see why Potter fans claim Edinburgh was the muse for much of the series. Fans ans of the boy wizard have made Edinburgh their place of pilgrimage, visiting a number of landmarks said to have inspired the books’ writer JK Rowling and played a part in bringing the magic of Harry Potter to life. Having moved to the city in the mid 1990s, author Joanne Rowling famously finished writing the first book in the series at various 6 |

cafes in the Old Town. The Elephant House on George IV Bridge proclaims itself to be the ‘Birthplace of Harry Potter’ on their window signage; perhaps a bit of a stretch given that Rowling has famously said the idea came to her whilst delayed on a train from Manchester to London King’s Cross. However, Rowling did write in the coffee shop. Another place Rowling used to get her caffeine fix when writing the early Harry Potter novels is located on Nicolson Street. Now called Spoon, in the days of Rowling’s visits it was known as Nicolson’s cafe and, despite the change in ownership and name, Potter fans and wannabe writers still descend on this cafe in the hope that a little bit of Harry Potter magic might rub off on them. M More recent sites on the wish list of any true wizarding fan include the newly opened wizard-themed shop on Victoria Street. Diagon House, purveyors of all things Potter, is located on the colourful street which WWW.SFEDINBURGH.CO.UK

is rumoured to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley. Close by, The Museum on the Mound, located in the old Bank of Scotland building, is said to have inspired Rowling to create the goblin-run Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Any Potter-themed trip around Edinburgh must include a visit to Greyfriar's Kirkyard. The graveyard is the final resting place for many former city residents although, according to legend, many don’t seem to do that much resting. The infamous MacKenzie Poltergeist, the reported ghost of George ‘Bluidy’ MacKenzie, a judge who oversaw the witch trials in the city, is said to haunt his tomb, causing chaos when unsuspecting visitors enter. The tales of ongoing tomfoolery are not dissimilar to the shenanigans of Hogwart’s very own mischief maker, Peeves the poltergeist. The headstone of Thomas Riddell, who died in 1806, has fans speculating that this may have inspired the name for villain Tom Riddle, better known as Lord Voldemort. Close by is also a plaque in memory of poet William McGonagall, who died in 1877; inspiration perhaps for the Head of Gryffindor, Minerva McGonagall. For fans looking for concrete proof of JK Rowling’s presence in Edinburgh they need only look SF EDINBURGH

down. The famed author’s golden handprints are engraved in Caithness stone within the grounds of the City Chambers. The handprints were cast when the author won the Edinburgh Award in 2008 to honour her as an outstanding individual who has made a positive impact on the city and gained recognition for Edinburgh. Inspiration for the wizarding world was also taken from The National Museum of Scotland’s Lewis Chessmen, a medieval chess set dating from the 12th or 13th century which was discovered on the Hebridean island of Lewis. An exact replica of the chess set was used in the film version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone during a game of chess between Harry and Ron. Visiting fans can end their adventure where Rowling ended Harry’s. Whilst coffee shops populated by students were where Rowling wrote the first books, the setting for the completion of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was rather more luxurious; the Grand Suite at the Balmoral Hotel. To celebrate the completion of the series she signed a marble bust in the room which guests can still see today, although it is now safely in a glass case. A brass plaque on the door has been added and the door knocker has been replaced with a brass owl. onwards, due to a lack of space the city grew upwards and saw the creation of the earliest form of ‘high rise’ residential buildings. Many parts of the Old Town still retain the original medieval street plan. The main artery of the city’s historic heart is the Royal Mile, the name of which was coined in the early 20th century, although no buildings on the street officially take this address. Instead, the Royal Mile consists of Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand. Myriad tributaries run off the Royal Mile, including the sinisterly named Fleshmarket Close, once the home to a meat market and, in more recent times, used as the setting for Edinburgh author Ian Rankin’s Rebus novel of the same name. The Great Fire of Edinburgh in 1824 caused the Old Town to undergo a transformation as many of the original buildings had to be demolished and rebuilt.

The Great Plague of Edinburgh in 1645, killed almost half the population The blaze began on 15 November 1824 in an engraving workshop located on Old Assembly Close, a narrow alleyway just off the High Street. Due to the high density of the buildings, the fire spread rapidly and quickly engulfed adjoining buildings east of Fleshmarket Close and along the Royal Mile. The fire moved towards the Cowgate and a secondary outbreak occurred close to the present day Parliament Square. Edinburgh’s first permanent fire brigade had formed only two months previously and struggled to contain the fire. It was only with the help of a fortuitously heavy downpour of rain that they finally managed to get the blaze under control. It took five days for the fire to be completely extinguished. In the days that followed the remnants of precarious buildings were pulled down and plans to rebuild concieved. In total 400 homes 16 |

were destroyed and at least 13 people died. During the rebuilding process, a lot of work was done on the foundations of buildings. This, along with the construction of South Bridge in the 18th century, created many passages and vaults underground which were once a hub of activity but over time eventually abandoned and forgotten. In recent years, work has been undertaken to open these areas up to the public. One of the Old Town’s most popular tourist attractions is The Real Mary King’s Close where visitors can get an insight into what life was like in an Old Town close between the 16th and 19th century before it was built over, turning the once bustling street into a creepy and closed off underground maze. High density population and poor sanitary conditions led to the Great Plague of Edinburgh ravaging the city in 1645, killing almost half of the city’s population. In the Old Town, methods of controlling the spread of disease included some of the underground closes being sealed off, with those infected with the plague left to die inside. The centre of the Old Town’s grizzly past is The Grassmarket, once home to the city’s gallows. One of its most famous executions

in the early 1700s was that of Margaret Dickson, a Musselburgh fishwife, who was accused of murdering her baby shortly after birth. She was hanged in the Grassmarket but whilst her body was on route to be buried, she woke up and began scrabbling to get out of the coffin. Her recovery was deemed an act of God and she was given a full pardon. She gained the nickname of ‘half hangit Maggie’ and a pub named after her is located on the Grassmarket, close to the site of the old gallows. Thankfully the modern day Old Town is far more welcoming and attracts over four million tourists each year who flock to learn about the history of the city, take a ghost tour of the underground vaults or visit during August to soak up the festival atmosphere or see the Military Tattoo. The area, along with the New Town, is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Old Town We’ve walked the cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town to find the best places to eat, drink and shop this autumn

H

arry Potter author J.K. Rowling is reputed to have based Diagon Alley on Victoria Street in Edinburgh, and it’s easy to see why. Right in the heart of the Old Town, this uphill crescent of rainbow-coloured shop fronts is the perfect starting point to begin exploring this magical area of Scotland’s capital. While Harry and his friends sought wands and owls, Victoria Street is home to Demijohn, the world’s first liquid deli, where liqueurs, wines, oils and vinegars can be decanted into quirky glass bottles that wouldn’t look out of place in a potions class. For glassencased gifts of a different variety, the Isle of Skye Candle Company’s Edinburgh store is well worth a visit to experience the heady aromas of Scots pine, heather and wild berries, while Mr Wood’s Fossils on the Cowgatehead is home to a staggering collection of prehistoric collectables, minerals and meteorites – perfect if you’re looking for a truly unique present. The adjacent Grassmarket, steeped

in history as the notorious spot where executions once took place, was partially pedestrianised in 2008 and is now home to a substantial farmers’ market each Saturday – the perfect place to stock up on organic fruit and vegetables, artisan breads, smoked fish and other fresh, local produce to take home.

ADVERTORIAL

To get away from the hustle and bustle of the market stalls, head for Hula Juice Bar to grab a delicious, healthy and oh-so-Instagram-friendly breakfast, lunch or coffee. In fact, whatever you’re looking for – from a chilled-out afternoon with the resident cats at Maison de Moggy, to traditional Scottish hospitality at Monteiths; a sweet treat at Fudge Kitchen (Irn Bru tablet, anyone?) or retro Super Mario video games in Wings underground bar – you can find it in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Perhaps the most famous street in the Old Town – if not in the whole city – is, of course, the Royal Mile. Souvenir shops aside, this bustling tourist hub is home to some retail treasures if you’re prepared to do a bit of digging. One such gem is Cadenhead’s, Scotland’s oldest independent whisky bottler. This whisky shop and tasting room on the Canongate is must-visit, whether you’re new to single malt or already a seasoned aficionado. If you’re planning to stop in the Old Town overnight, the Royal Mile

makes a convenient base; the Radisson Blu Hotel offers a chic combination of high-end bedrooms and suites with dazzling views of the city, plus two upscale restaurants, a fully-equipped health club and a tranquil spa. Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, where historic buildings blend seamlessly with modern architecture. This is particularly clear to see at The Arches, a row of 19 renovated Victorian arcs on East Market Street which have been restored as part of the £150 million New Waverley development, transforming the area into a vibrant place to eat, drink and shop. Worth a special mention is the Chop House, the little sister of the original restaurant in Leith of the same name – arguably two of the finest steak houses in the city. Edinburgh is famously built on seven hills, but despite this the Old Town is very walkable. How long you choose to spend exploring this vibrant part of Edinburgh on foot is up to you, but we guarantee that you’ll leave wanting to return time and time again.

The Shore Grill & Fish House Doubletree by Hilton Edinburgh, North Queensferry KY11 1HP The adage about never judging a book by its cover could have been tailor-made for this impressive hotel restaurant overlooking the new Queensferry Crossing. After all, as you cross the bridge this hotel strikes you as a classic of its kind – mid-range, full of businessmen and people whose plane from Edinburgh Airport has been delayed. The truth is altogether more enticing. First there’s the view, which thanks to the restaurant being moved from one side of the hotel to the other, means everyone now gets to sit watching the Forth and the traffic passing over the bridge. Because it’s only just been built, this is not so much a refit as a whole new light and airy 80-seater restaurant complete with comfortable booth seats and contemporary design flourishes. But second, and most importantly, the move has given the hotel the chance to look anew at its food offering, and the resulting menu is excellent, and definitely worth exploring (if coming from Edinburgh, North Queensferry rail station is a ten-minute walk away). The star of the show is undoubtedly the range of four steaks, which are all sourced from the Borders and cooked on a Josper charcoal grill. Our steaks (an 8oz fillet and 10oz sirloin) were cooked perfectly and were reasonably priced at £28 and £25 respectively, including chips, salad and pepercorn/bearnaise sauce. The rest of the meal was really solid too. Our canape of dressed crab blinis was good (although the brucschetta was poor), while the charcuterie board of serrano ham, venison and boar was excellent, and the other starters of scallops with black pudding, wild garlic and pink lady apple was deftly done. We rounded off with a mediocre lemon and mango cheesecake and an outstanding lime and blueberry posset. With extremely competent and helpful staff, plus a manager who really knows his wine, this was an unexpectedly positive experience. RB 01383 410000 | www.doubletree3.hilton.com

Ishka 83 Morrison St, Haymarket EH3 8BU An impressive cocktail list along with a promising menu set my expectations high. Our starters of asparagus and pigeon breast were adequate but not extraordinary. For mains, my first choice of pea and broad bean raviolo was sold out so I opted instead for the broccoli fritters which had a distinct school dinner vibe, were sadly underwhelming in flavour and certainly didn’t have wow factor I was hoping for. Things improved a little by dessert but any return visit from me will likely be on a drinks only basis. FH 0131 228 7517 | www.ishkaedinburgh.co.uk 24 |

Clark And Lake Charcuterie & Bar 8 Gillespie Place, Bruntsfield EH10 4HS It’s easy to see why this place has been packed since day one. For drinkers, it has a huge and sensibly-priced wine list that starts at £3.20 a glass, plus a bravura selection of great artisan beers from around the world. The staff are also commendably laid-back and chatty given how busy the place is. Quay Commons 92 Commercial Quay, Leith EH6 6LX The sea air gives me an appetite, I don’t know why it has that effect, but it always leaves me tired and hungry. But on the plus side, lunch in Quay Commons must be one of the most pleasant places I’ve eaten in a bid to stave off the hanger. The latest restaurant by the team behind the hugely successful Gardener’s Cottage has the wow factor on arrival, when your eye can’t help but be drawn to a counter covered in a range of cakes that made my heart actually skip a beat.

One of the things that made me so excited about the food here is that bread is King, and in the case of my lunch that was four hunks, not slices, of divine sour dough accompanied by more dips and nibbly bits than I have space to mention. My favourite being slices of crisp and flavoursome mutton. Maddie had the cheesiest hunk, not slice, of quiche as we looked on in awe at the giant pies being delivered to our fellow diners. Tea and cakes followed, with a pink beetroot choux bun, tasting almost as good as it looked and a rich and moist chocolate cake infused with thyme. The perfect place for a relaxed lunch in sunny Leith. MB 0131 677 0244 | www.quaycommons.co

Kenji Sushi 42 St Stephen St, Stockbridge EH3 5AL Okay, Kenji Sushi isn’t strictly new – it’s been open for just over a year – but it’s taken a while to getting around to reviewing, which was our loss because this is the sort of easy-eating neighbourhood restaurant we all want to live near to. Sunken tables give a feeling of authenticity, while the sushi was spot-on, with the Volcano Rolls and California Rolls the pick of the bunch. SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Thai to die for... Edinburgh has some outstanding Thai restaurants – here are six of our favourites

Dusit Okay, Dusit is definitely not cheap and was a bit cramped until its recent refurbishment, but this venerable old lady of the city centre dining scene also offers some of the best Thai food in the capital. In particular, its Southern Thai-style seafood dishes are stellar, particularly the red curries and my own favourite, the pad phet tom yum, which contains a mix of king prawns, scallops and monkfish.

0131 220 6846 | 49a Thistle Street | www.dusit.co.uk

Time 4 Thai Despite the cheesy name, this New Town restaurant is at the luxurious, corporateexpense-account end of the Thai pecking order in Edinburgh. Despite some high-falutin’ options, I’ve always found that the best options here are the simplest: the Thai green curry and chicken satay are both outstanding. It costs a few quid, but with very welcoming staff, fancy decor and well above average food, it’s just about worth it.

Passorn This is the favourite Edinburgh Thai of several foodie friends (its new brasserie on Hanover Street is also making waves). With a delivery from Thailand each week, Passorn fuses traditional Thai ingredients with local staples, such as sirloin steak topped with a red curry sauce rich in chillis, served on a bed of crispy potatoes. Sensibly-priced and with a wide range of really innovative dishes, this is a must-try. 0131 229 1537 | 23 Brougham Place, Tollcross | www.passornthai.com

JOHNSTONS THAI RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

Ting Thai Caravan It’s annoying that you can’t reserve a table or pay with cards at this no-frills eaterie which apes the street food joints of Bangkok, but if you take the time to queue (normally alongside hordes of students in term term), you’ll find it’s worth the effort. Once inside you’re placed on communal tables, and pick up small boxes that are split into three categories: rice and noodles, curries, and soups. It’s noisy, utilitarian and stangely fast-foodish (even when it takes ages to be served) but it’s a breath of fresh air, good food and great value.

0131 226 7614 | 33 Castle Street | www.chaophraya.co.uk/edinburgh

Chaophraya Some purists object to the fact that Chaophraya is part of a chain but it has so much going for it that I find it easy to overlook the corporate overtones. I love sitting in the futuristic glass box suspended over Castle Street which gives you the best views in Edinburgh: to the Castle one way, and across the Forth the other. If I’m feeling poor, I have a beer and their pad thai, which is arguably the best in Edinburgh; if I’m feeling a little more flush, I take advantage of their excellent cocktail list and then order the yellow fish curry, steamed dumplings or lamb teriyaki.

0131 225 9801 | 8 Teviot Place, Old Town | www.facebook.com/tt.CARAVAN

Nok’s Kitchen I lived around the corner from this intimate little restaurant for ten years, so I know the interior very well, and it remains a great (if cramped) place to huddle with a few friends, especially on a cold winter’s day. It is very popular with the locals so book ahead if possible, but once you’re in you will feel like taking hours to eat. The food is really well-produced here, and once again they do a fantastic pad thai. One piece of advice: don’t sit near the door (and don’t expect to get a mobile signal if you’re not by the door). 0131 225 4804 | 8 Gloucester St, Stockbridge | www.nokskitchen.co.uk

JOHNSTONS MY CITY GARDEN OF ELGIN

My city garden A hidden gem on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Jean Knox’s Hunter’s Tryst Garden is her pride and joy. Well stocked with herbaceous beds and shrubs, a well manicured lawn and a selection of young fruit trees including apple trees, plum trees and a couple of cherry trees, Jean’s garden has been a labour of love.

‘I began working on the garden when we moved in to the house 34 years ago. It was just a wilderness and I’ve done everything from scratch including coming up with the design and it’s still evolving.’ The garden has featured on the BBC’s The Beechgrove Garden as well as The Instant Gardener. www.scotlandsgardens.org

reating a big impact in a small space is no easy feat. But architect Rob Bruce and his girlfriend Fiona Burnett have managed just this in their bright Wardie Square home. Built in 1840, the house is a former worker’s cottage which housed the builders who were constructing the large houses in Trinity at the time. ‘This type of house is tiny and when I bought the place in 2001 there was already an extension at the back giving an extra bedroom and a kitchen,’ said Rob. ‘It was when my girlfriend Fiona moved in two years ago that we began renovating the property. We wanted to modernise the house, use the space better and bring in a bit more light. ‘The biggest change we made was to move

my office out of the spare room and into a shipping container in the garden. I run a one man band architect’s practice from home so moving my office out of the house and into the garden freed up a bedroom. ‘The gardens of these houses are steep and therefore terraced. Along with three other neighbours, we were given the opportunity to purchase an extra terrace then applied for planning permission to put the shipping container on it as it was far enough away from the other houses so as not to overlook them.’ Using former shipping containers to create extra living space is something that is becoming increasingly attractive to home owners. ‘I did a bit of research and spoke to a few container companies who could make

them to your own specifications,’ said Rob. ‘I did some drawings and the container arrived three quarters complete with a big sliding door, insulation and a plywood floor. We made the finishing touches by adding an insulated floor and underfloor heating as well as bringing in a power supply and broadband.’ When it came to buying the house the location was hugely important. ‘The living room and one of the bedrooms have sea views and from the container we have a view over to Fife, which is incredible. When I first saw images of the property I was surprised I hadn’t seen it before. I assumed it was further down the coast in East Lothian; it’s one of those tucked away places.’

aving been born and raised in the East Neuk of Fife, it is easy to see where Edinburgh-based artist Hatti draws her inspiration from. Citing the sea as her muse, she has been building her business since the age of 15 and her distinctive style of expressive and emotive land and seascapes has earned her a loyal customer base with demand for her work coming from as far afield as the United States, Australia and Europe, as well as the rest of the UK.

Her distinctive style of expressive and emotive seascapes has earned her a loyal customer base After learning her trade at Central Saint Martins College and Duncan of Jordanstone, she set up her textile brand in 2013, and has seen the demand for her range of fabrics, soft furnishings and, most recently, her fashion collaborations skyrocket. Her foray into the fashion world has, to date, led to collaborations with luxury shoe brand Taschka and multi-award winning Edinburgh-based fashion designer Judy R Clark, as well as a soon-to-be-launched collection of handbags. www.hattipattisson.com

BEAUTY

Winter is coming As the nights draw in it’s important to ensure that your skin remains hydrated. Follow Charlotte Connoley’s tips to get you through the long cold winter

J

ust as you change what you wear in winter, your skincare should change too. You need to protect your skin from the cold and wind. Stay away from anything that contains mineral oils, Lanolin or has a synthetic fragrance, and don’t over-cleanse skin; you need to retain as much natural moisture as you can. A heavier day cream, oils and balms will all shield your skin from the elements – Fresh (fresh.com/uk) has a lovely Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream, which is beautifully nourishing. Dry patches and flakiness are a sign of dryness, so grab yourself a nourishing organic facial oil, such as the Rejuvenating Facial Elixir from MBotanicals

(mbotanicals.co.uk) to rebalance the skin. Scrubs and harsh exfoliators should only be used twice a week. Topical exfoliants are far more effective and less harsh on the skin than scrubs. Using a peel will help that fresh skin to show through. Murad’s Hydro-Glow Aqua Peel (murad. co.uk) is a two-step system that gives skin a gentle peel and deeply hydrates. A lot of lip balms contain fragrance, which can be drying, so go easy on them. Use an oil or your moisturiser on your lips, and drink lots of water. Cargilfield Where learning is an everyday adventure

A

s a Prep School, Cargilfield offers your child a chance to reap the benefits of a purpose-built environment and ultimately flourish as one of the oldest pupils in the school with positions of responsibility and significance. Without the influence of much older pupils, we can limit the influences that force children to grow up faster than we want and develop instead, qualities of courtesy, self-reliance and assurance, when they leave at 13 years old, ready to move on to their chosen senior school. Cargilfield prepares girls and boys for the leading independent schools across Edinburgh, Scotland and the whole of the United Kingdom and has no tie to any particular senior school. One of the Headmaster’s key roles is to guide parents towards a school that will best suit their children and their family: a choice that can be made when your children are 11 or 12 rather than when they are 3 or 4. Our girls and boys are busy! They play sport every day and creative activities such as music, drama, art and design are an important part of our curriculum. There are evening and weekend activities and we also offer over 40 clubs that take place during the school day.

Our ‘Tailored Boarding’ offers a wonderful experience and, once tasted, the children themselves often make the choice that they want to be at school with their friends. Be it occasional evenings, weekends or a regular pattern of one or two nights a week building up to weekly boarding when your child is ready for it. We are confident that every child at Cargilfield is well known and confident of his or her place in our family. It would be our pleasure to welcome you to our school at any time or come along and see ‘Cargilfield at Work’ on Thursday 5th October from 9am – 12noon. Please call us on 0131 336 2207.

The West End & City Centre Shopping inspiration in the heart of Edinburgh

W

hile the high street has undoubtedly taken a knock in recent years as online retailers’ profits continue to rise, Princes Street – Edinburgh’s main shopping destination – is still home to some big-chain favourites, contrasting with the altogether higher-end brands housed on parallel George Street. Designer delights do not begin and end here, however; Multrees Walk is the definition of luxury shopping in Edinburgh, home of Scotland’s only Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nichols stores. While the latter is just as famous for the spectacular views from its Forth Floor Restaurant as it is for its five floors of designer-label fashion, a better-kept secret of Harvey Nichols’ is Beyond Medispa on the second floor. More than just a skincare specialist, practitioners here prescribe a bespoke treatment journey tailored to your specific requirements, leaving your skin feeling rejuvenated and your mind clear. No shopping trip would be complete without browsing a boutique or two, and Thistle Street offers quality independent shopping in abundance. Browse leading brands from all over Europe in Covet, and enjoy a (literal) warm welcome at Jane Davidson, where you’ll be greeted with a real fire during winter and offered a tea or coffee on arrival. Although Rose Street is perhaps best known for its stretch of lively pubs, furniture store BoConcept has broken the mould, championing clean, innovative Danish designs for the home. Only a stone’s throw away, Jenners, Edinburgh’s flagship department store, has charmed shoppers of all ages and budgets for almost 180 years – just don’t forget to browse the Breeze Art Gallery’s contemporary collections on the fourth floor. Moving towards the opposite end of Princes Street, the West End is garnering a well-deserved reputation as a shopping destination in its own right. From bridal accessories and designer jewellery at

78 |

Lily Luna, to eclectic home accents at Remus Interiors and gifts and greetings cards at Paper Tiger, there are so many wonderful shops within these cobbled streets to discover. The website of Edinburgh’s West End BID Group is well worth browsing before a shopping trip to familiarise youself with any hidden gems you may have missed. Socialising can be done just as stylishly as shopping in the West End, and everything about the Angels Share Hotel, Bar & Restaurant on Hope Street sparkles; from the copper bar to the chandeliers and cocktails. Whighams Wine Cellars next door hosts its very own jazz club and, although a little out of the way, Pizzeria 1926 offers a true taste of Naples and is well worth making the journey beyond Haymarket for. Whether you’re looking to shop till you drop in a string of high-end stores, raise a glass in one of the many watering holes or escape the hubbub in the city’s greenery, the West End and city centre have something for everyone.

Broughton & Leith Walk There’s more than meets the eye in these vibrant areas of Edinburgh

T

he landscape of Leith Street, where Broughton meets Elm Row at the top of Leith Walk, is in the midst of a transformation. The old St James Centre, dating from the 1970s, has gone, and work has commenced on one of the biggest regeneration projects currently underway in the UK – a development of 1.7 million square feet, including extensive retail space, a luxury hotel, 30 restaurants, a multiscreen cinema and up to 150 new homes. Expected to open in 2020, the new Edinburgh St James will undoubtedly bring extra revenue to the city centre – but in the meantime, don’t skip Broughton Street or Leith Walk when planning a day out. Elm Row, at the top of Leith Walk, is a constant hive of activity – and, thankfully, just out of earshot of the ongoing construction works. At the heart of the area is the Edinburgh Playhouse, hosting a packed schedule of touring musicals, with plenty of lively bars and restaurants nearby, ideal for pre-theatre dinner and drinks.

82 |

082-083_sfe09.indd 82

Leith Walk’s shops have a charm all of their own – and where better to begin than in Scotland’s oldest delicatessen and Italian wine merchant? Valvona & Crolla on Elm Row was founded in 1934, and this family-owned business continues to delight today. Don’t miss the cafe here, either.

While you’re in the area, pop in to The Cat’s Miaou to shop an eclectic mix of fair trade, ethical and locallymade gifts, and browse McNaughtan’s Bookshop & Gallery, the oldest secondhand and antiquarian book store in Scotland. Music fans should check out Elvis Shakespeare and Vinyl Villains. If you’re looking for flavours of the Mediterranean, few areas in Edinburgh can beat the quality and choice offered in Leith Walk’s cafes and eateries. Relax in Serrano & Manchego and savour Spanish tapas with lashings of wine, indulge in Italian cuisine at local favourites Vittoria and La Favorita, and, for something completely unique, take home a selection of sweet and savoury goodies from The Sicilian Pastry Shop on Albert Street. Leith itself has come a long way since its Trainspotting days. Truly one of Edinburgh’s most vibrant areas, the city’s port district boasts its own distinct character. Continue your journey down Leith Walk and you’ll be rewarded with a hub of lively eating

and drinking spots – from sumptuous cakes at Mimi’s Bakehouse to Michelinstarred cuisine at The Kitchin and Restaurant Martin Wishart. West of Leith Walk, Broughton Street is home to many independent speciality shops. Real Foods is a one-stop destination for speciality, organic, free-from, vegan and health foods in Edinburgh, while The Dragonfly stocks classic, retro, vintage and chic gifts for all occasions. Joey D, meanwhile, recycles vintage clothing and unusual materials in his in-store workshop; he might not save the world singlehandedly with his recycling scheme, but he will help you defeat the boredom of the high street. While the Edinburgh tram route currently stops at York Place, a final decision on whether to extend this network to Newhaven is expected in 2018. If approved, the new tram lines would run down Leith Walk and along to the Ocean Terminal shopping centre. It’s all change for Edinburgh’s east end – let’s enjoy the journey.

Morningside & Bruntsfield From boutiques to cafes and everything in between, make a day of it in Morningside and Bruntsfield

W

ith an eclectic collection of traditional shops and thriving boutiques, both Morningside and neighbouring Bruntsfield offer some of the finest independent shopping experiences in Edinburgh. Add to this the abundance of cafes and cultural hubs, and it’s hardly surprising that Bruntsfield and Morningside are two of the most sought-after residential locations in the city, popular with both students and young families alike. If you’re looking to relocate, there’s no better place to start your search than Braemore Sales & Lettings – whether you’re looking to buy or rent. A walk down Morningside Road provides a real contrast to the medieval Old Town or the classical Georgian New Town, although the history of the areas are just as easy to see. Dedicated grocers, butchers and cheesemongers remain, as do many businesses here which have truly lasted the test of time; James Erskine Interiors, still housed in the original shop on Church Hill Place

which first opened in 1919, continues to delight customers today, while the family-run, art deco Dominion Cinema on Newbattle Terrace, which dates from 1937, comfortably competes with large multiplexes due to the opulence of its interior and the owners’ focus on the pleasure of the cinema experience.

Part of the appeal of shopping in Bruntsfield and Morningside is how seamlessly these traditional businesses sit alongside contemporary boutiques, such as Sarah Hutchison’s eponymous SH Jewellery shop, brimming with beautiful, modern silver jewellery. Enchanting gift store Out Of The Blue, upmarket home accessories retailer Acanthus and independent ladies clothing company Vivaldi are well worth visiting, as is the cosy interior of The Edinburgh Bookshop. Specialist shops, too, are worth their salt; whether it’s Bruntsfield caffeine connoisseurs Artisan Roast and their ingenious coffee subscription service, or Henderson Wines on Comiston Road – always ready to offer sage advice on the best beer, wine or whisky for the occasion, along with glass loans and a party planning service. One thing which both Bruntsfield and Morningside have in abundance is cafes and, if you have a sweet tooth, you can’t fail to be tempted. S. Luca’s ice cream originated in Musselburgh

but created a second home at Holy Corner more than 15 years ago, while Falko Konditormeister – named after the highest state qualification a German pastry chef can hold – spoils for choice with divine cakes, tarts and gâteaux. Options are far from limited for more substantial fare: Nonna’s Kitchen remains a firm local favourite; Bruntsfield eatery Montpeliers permanently buzzes with activity, and Maison Bleue Le Bistrot delivers a real sense of Parisian cafe culture, serving thoroughly enjoyable French food with a Scottish twist. The joy of exploring Bruntsfield and Morningside is not simply confined indoors; catch cricket practice on the Meadows, play a free round on Bruntsfield Links, the world’s oldest short hole golf course (not to be confused with the golfing society of the same name at Barnton), or even grab a sunny spot for a barbeque during the summer months. Now, did we mention there’s a great little wine shop around here...?

The New Town & Stockbridge Shopping destinations abound north of Princes Street – if you know where to look...

D

espite its somewhat deceiving name, Edinburgh’s New Town has recently celebrated its 250th birthday. Plans to expand the city centre in 1766 saw a competition launched, inviting Scottish architects to submit plans for this new portion of Edinburgh. A little-known architect, James Craig, produced the winning design; only 26 years old at the time, Craig’s design has been immortalised in these winding cobbles north of Princes Street, home to some of the most spectacular buildings in the city. The New Town isn’t just aesthetically pleasing – these streets, rows and circuses are also an ideal starting point for a shopping trip. Halfway down the gentle descent of Dundas Street, interiors boutique Halidon Home’s ethos of purchasing only small numbers of items at any time makes it a must-visit to source unique home accessories and divine candles. A mere hop down the street is Unicorn Antiques, stacked floor to ceiling with collectables – a treasure trove of days

gone by. Of course, you can’t talk about Dundas Street without mentioning Epitome; this ladies boutique is all about timeless, functional design and craftsmanship, stocking brands from Levi’s and Converse to Norse Projects and S Max Mara. Moving towards Stockbridge, Jeffreys

Interiors on North West Circus Place deals in gorgeously bespoke design for the whole home – from brief and concept to installation and dressing – while around the corner on St Stephen Street, Catalog Ltd is a trusted retailer of minimal, modern furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories – truly something to suit every home. The New Town’s myriad art galleries are difficult to miss, and there’s no better place to begin your cultural quest than The Dundas Street Gallery, which is home to multiple displays throughout the year. One highlight is sure to be contemporary painter Jamie Primrose’s ‘Serene Expressions’ exhibition in early November. The Laurel Gallery is also worth a browse, not only for the collections, but for those looking to take on an upcycling project – the gallery is an accredited retailer of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Of course, fitting in some rest and relaxation is a must, and Lee Mitchell Hairdressing in Comely Bank is the ideal place to book in for some TLC.

Thanks to the dedicated team of talented staff here, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling fabulous. Stockbridge is synonymous with shops, but two which stand out in particular are Galerie Mirages – one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets, and one of Scotland’s leading specialists in silver and semi-precious stone jewellery – and The Write Stuff, a one-stop shop for all your stationery needs, from school supplies to cards and gifts made by local artists. For a bite to eat or a meeting place for drinks, both the New Town and Stockbridge abound with options. On Queen Street, stop inside the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s stunning Kaleidoscope Bar for a unique take on single malt whiskies, including refreshing cocktails. Hamilton’s is a local favourite for weekend brunch, Taisteal is making waves with fine dining food critics and, of course, there’s The Raeburn – a Stockbridge institution with an unbeatable outside terrace. Cheers.

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh may live in the States, but he’s never far from his capital home and his old Leith stomping ground WORDS BY IRV INE WEL S H

I live in Chicago, but I’m back in Edinburgh a lot. I come over in Spring for the festival and again at Christmas and New Year. But I’ll always be here if there’s a wedding, or a funeral, or a big football game. I miss Edinburgh, but I have a place in the New Town and it’s home-from-home. I jump on a plane and when I get off I’m right back into it. I still have my pals and family here, so I don’t feel divorced from it. I went to school in Pilton. I was a terrible pupil. I wasn’t disruptive, just disinterested. It’s great to see the Leith Theatre up and running. The trust have done a fantastic job of cleaning it out and now it’s just a matter of getting people used to going there. Real estate has destroyed so many venues in the city centre. Its time will come.

I think the Banana flats’ new listed building status is great, but why couldn’t they have done it for the Fort? I do notice a difference on Leith Walk, all these crappy flats going up with a Tesco or Sainsburys underneath. I don’t know if that counts as regeneration? It looks a bit scabby to me. Trainspotting and T2 aren’t accurate portrayals of Edinburgh. They’re fiction, dramatisations of life

You can’t accurately portray a city in film and the city, not tourist board brochures. You can’t accurately portray a city in film. You just need to pick aspects of it and that’s what they do. I’ve never really had a local pub in Edinburgh but there’s lots that I like. I’ll often go to Leith because I like the pub culture there, and I do miss that.
