otted around Edinburgh are more than halfa-dozen unique neighbourhoods built primarily during the latter half of the 19th century. Instantly recognisable thanks to their parallel lines of distinctive two-story buildings, usually with external staircases leading to the upper flats, these ‘colony’ homes were originally built to provide affordable, quality 8 |

housing for the city’s artisan working classes. Unique to Edinburgh, the various colonies – flats designed to feel like homes, each with its own garden and front door – owe their existence to two factors: the extremely poor state of available housing across Edinburgh during the mid-1800s, at a time when the city’s population was growing significantly; and an industrial dispute between employers WWW.SFEDINBURGH SFEDINBURGH.CO CO..UK UK

joiners, plasterers and plumbers – in part because the dividends could be put towards the purchase of a company-built home. Between 1861 and 1875, the ECBC built more than 1,000 homes on five sites across Edinburgh, starting with Glenogle Park in Stockbridge, and expanding into Abbeyhill from 1867. The co-operative nature of the ECBC was quite deliberately reflected in their chosen motif – a beehive –which can be seen carved onto many of the colony buildings. As they developed, most of

and construction trades, which led to a lock-out during the spring of 1861. Deciding that enough was enough, a small group of Edinburgh stonemasons opted to set up on their own, which led to the establishment of the Edinburgh Cooperative Building Company (ECBC). While the majority of its shareholders were stonemasons, a significant proportion of the company’s £1 shares were quickly snapped up by SF EDINBURGH

the Edinburgh colonies became associated with particular industries. The housing in Dalry, for example, was home to many employees of the nearby Caledonian Railway, while a development in North Merchiston was influenced by the construction of both the Caledonian Brewery and a burst of industrialisation, including a factory owned by the North British Rubber Company. The Abbeyhill colonies also featured a high number of railway workers, for much the same reason – the project’s proximity to major railway infrastructure. This was just one factor in the colonies’ sense of

community, with the basic design also playing its part. ‘The parallel lines of terraced colony houses ensured that neighbours overlooked one another and so private events and personal circumstances were part of the circle of gossip,’ wrote Professor Richard Rodger, of the University of Edinburgh in his 2000 book, Housing the People: the Colonies of Edinburgh. This communal involvement can still be seen in many of the colonies today. For example, the Abbeyhill colonies – located off the north side of London Road, east of Easter Road – have proved fertile ground for a group of artists. Top: Watercolour artist Gill Smith works at home in the Abbeyhill colony. Above: The colonies at Dalry. Below: Gill exhibits her work during the Colony of Artists weekend.

‘Communal involvement can still be seen in many of the colonies’ Every September, the artisan community of Abbeyhill colonies turn their own homes into temporary exhibition spaces. Launched in 2005, the weekend event, Colony of Artists, has since expanded to include a live music venue, the nearby primary school, and local businesses. It was only after she moved in that the communal nature of Abbeyhill colonies revealed itself to EdinburghSF EDINBURGH

based artist Ainsley Francis. ‘I’m a glass engraver – I work with fused and engraved glass, and wood,’ she said. ‘When we moved in we did the normal “Oh, what do you do? What’s your life like?” neighbour thing. It turned out that my neighbour used to be a crystal cutter at Edinburgh Crystal.’ Through her new neighbour, Ainsley was introduced to Abbeyhill’s Colony of Artists. The original idea for the exhibition came from watercolour artist Gill Smith, who has lived in the Abbeyhill colonies for nearly 30 years. She has exhibited for many years at the Pittenweem Arts Festival, a similar event held in the homes of artists living in the picturesque Fife fishing village. ‘Because it worked in a small village, I thought it could work in a similar way here in Abbeyhill,’ Gill explained. ‘It’s grown in size – more than 50 artists took part last year.’ Taking part can be something of a challenge – not just showing your work to complete strangers, but also welcoming them into your home. ‘I think it’s an attraction for visitors. Unlike in a gallery, you are meeting people, and you do get comments about your work. I think in general most people who come round try to be encouraging; if it’s not their cup of tea, they’re going to disappear pretty fast anyway.’ WWW.SFEDINBURGH.CO.UK

n a city of hills, an expanse of flat land is a rare find and Edinburgh’s famous Meadows is a gem of a place to explore. Before it became the Meadows, the area to the south of the Old Town was originally the site of a loch known as Burgh Loch and later renamed South Loch, mirroring Nor Loch to the north of the castle where Princes Street Gardens now lies. Compared with Nor Loch, which was used for waste disposal, South Loch was thought to be more sanitary and therefore provided much of the city’s drinking water. Reliance on the loch diminished when springs further to the south of the city centre were tapped and pipes were laid to bring water to residents. South Loch was drained in the mid-17th century and the land reclaimed. Throughout the 18th century, the area was landscaped and the Meadows created. Features dating from that time still remain, such as Middle Meadow Walk, the tree-lined avenue spanning the park from north to south. The Meadows provided a space for city residents to partake in activities such as football, cricket and tennis. The park also became the practice ground for the Royal Company of Archers. During the Second World War, 512 emergency allotments were created in the park in an attempt to tackle food shortages. These were dismantled during the 1960s after they were deemed to no longer be necessary. The Meadows’ northern fringe underwent a modern transformation in the 2000s with the development of the Quartermile on the site of the old Royal Infirmary. The existing hospital buildings were converted into flats and new buildings SF EDINBURGH

016-023_sfe01.indd 19

The Jawbone Arch In 1886 the International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art took place on the Meadows. The Orkney and Fair Isle Knitters’ stall was made up of four whale jawbones which, following the exhibition, were gifted to the city. The bones were arranged vertically in a square, meeting at the top and creating an arch over the entrance to the park. The Meadows Jawbone Arch was removed in 2014 after it was deemed to be a danger to passers-by due to its condition having deteriorated. The structure was due to be returned to its position on several occasions but a series of delays have meant that it is yet to be reinstated.

were added to create more housing, retail and leisure facilities. Each summer, the park becomes a hive of activity with the renowned Ladyboys of Bangkok taking up residence for a series of Festival performances . Sitting at the east end of the Meadows, Summerhall is Edinburgh’s newest and biggest arts venue. The earliest records of the site date from the 1700s when a farm, a cottage and a brewery occupied the area. During the First World War, the purpose-built Royal (Dick) Veterinary College opened at Summerhall where it continued as the hub of teaching until 2011 when it moved to its new campus at Easter Bush. The new owners of the building set about transforming it into an arts centre which officially opened to the public in 2012. As well as offering arts events

‘During the First World War, the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College was built’ all year round, the building houses other creative enterprises such as Barney’s Beer microbrewery and Pickerings gin distillery. To the south east of the Meadows lies the area of Newington. Following the opening of South Bridge in 1788, the area became easily accessible from the city centre and developed as wealthy residents of the Old Town moved to escape the overcrowding. With small villas being built, many residents chose the area over the New Town, which lacked the privacy and space on offer in Newington. Examples of these villa-style homes still stand on Minto Street and Blacket Avenue. Some were home to important people including Duncan McLaren, who was Lord 20 |

Provost of Edinburgh from 1851 to 1854 and was responsible for securing the Meadows as a public park. Andrew Usher, the Edinburgh brewer and donor of Usher Hall, lived in Arthur Lodge, one of the most distinguished buildings of the area designed in a classically Greek style from Craigleith sandstone. To the south is the site of a previous university residence known as Moray House’s Newington Campus on East Suffolk Road – the first purpose-built residence in Scotland that was developed exclusively for women. The first phase of construction began in 1913 with additional buildings being added in the following years. The accommodation eventually closed in 1997 but the area is still home to much of Edinburgh’s student population due to the proximity of George Square and the King’s Building’s campus.

RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

Baba 130 George St, City Centre Any restaurant which is the brainchild of the team behind Glasgow’s stunning Ox and Finch was always going to have me rushing to sample it. Throw in the fact that the Middle Eastern-inspired Baba describes itself as a ‘mezze, charcoal grill and cocktail bar’ and I’m all in. Taking up the whole ground floor of what was the Roxburghe Hotel on the corner of George Street and Charlotte Square, Baba is huge and stylishly sparse. Think the rich but muted colours you’d find in the backstreets of Marrakech and you’ll have an idea of the decor. It was, however, the food that drew me. After spending several months touring the Middle East at various stages, I was intrigued to see how authentic it was, and in general wasn’t disappointed. We started with two appetisers: a haggis and harissa kibbeh, which was a pretty forgettable sort of patty; and then cauliflower fritters with zhug and creme fraiche, which really hit the spot. The meal really got started when we ordered all eight dips, which we scooped up onto grilled pitta. They may have been the usual finger-food suspects – hummus, baba ganoush, labneh, muhammarra et al – but they were absolutely perfect and ridiculously filling. We could have happily stopped there, but I’m glad we didn’t. Instead we indulged ourselves with three dishes which ranged from good (the squid with merguez sausage and salmorejo; and the baharat beef kofta with butternut, yoghurt and chilli), to outstanding (monkfish with chickpeas, tomato, saffron and feta). My advice is to avoid the puddings, which felt like gilding the lily. Instead, divert that cash to the gorgeous Sufi Fizz cocktail – a yoghurty Kulfi-style concoction – and a wine list of outstanding Middle Eastern options. One last thing: for a city centre eaterie, Baba is very good value, with a gut-busting meal for two costing less than £50 before booze (if you’re not ravenous, the dips for two at £17 is outstanding value). RB

@Pizza 4 Charlotte Lane, West End In this American-style eatery, you’ll be struck instantly by all of the ways in which you can fully customise your pizza. Being so spoilt for choice, I went with one of their options for the indecisive, the ‘Boombastic’, which is a deliciously sweet and smoky pizza, topped with barbeque sauce, mozzarella, roast chicken, Gran Moravia cheese, grilled red onion, pineapple and sweetcorn. Ready in an amazing 90 seconds, one of the tastiest pizzas I’ve had in forever was finished off perfectly with a craft soda. AR 0131 285 5940 | www.atpizza.com 28 |

JOHNSTONS NEW RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

The Newbies

The SF Edinburgh reviewing team sample six of the best new restaurants on the capital’s dining scene Reviews by Richard Bath, Morag Bootland, Fiona Hendrie, Crystal Chesters, Amanda Richardson, Kenny Smith

Leftfield 12 Barclay Terrace, Bruntsfield Size doesn’t matter, as the old saying goes. That’s definitely the case with the bijou Leftfield. The establishment may be small, but it’s big on taste. My starter of charred tenderstem broccoli, avocado and rye bread was a delight for the palate, as was my dining companion’s butternut and cinnamon soup. I was recommended the six-hour cooked beef short rib, which was stunning, with the meat crumbling perfectly. The desserts were heavenly – my sticky toffee pudding with toffee ice-cream was perfect. Amazing value for money. KS

NEW RESTAURANTS

White Horse Oyster Bar 266 Canongate, Royal Mile, Old Town If you consider yourself to be a foodie, then get a date in the diary to road-test The White Horse Oyster Bar as soon as possible. This is one of the best new launches in the capital in recent memory, with an old man’s boozer transformed into a fantastic – and affordable – seafood restaurant that offers tapas-style servings in an understated yet chic and contemporary surrounding. I’ve been three times now and each time I find something new to like and laud. The four types of oysters are definitely the right

starting point (the grilled and tempura versions are perfect for people who think they don’t like oysters). There are big seafood platters and mains, but I’d avoid those and eat the ‘small plates’ to get a feel for the place. The octopus, crab fries, crab scotch egg, sesame tuna and monkfish satay are all worthy of investigation. Crisp, cliché-free and perfectly packaged, this is gorgeously decadent dining from the owners of the Chop House. Even the puddings and cocktails are stellar. Also, make sure you look at the website for special offers such as £5 corkage on Mon/Tues and £1 oysters during happy hour. Trust me, it’s good, so go... RB 0131 629 5300 | www.whitehorseoysterbar.co.uk

Toast 65 The Shore, Leith Toast offers waterside views, a large range of wines, sharing platters and six constantly updated seasonal dishes. We loved the beetroot, hummus and feta, mushrooms and polenta, slow roast pork belly, calamari, and chorizo and Iberian black pudding stew. Sommelier Seli suggested The Tea Leaf, a fresh, fruity South African Chenin Blanc, which went well with our eclectic selection of food. At £16 for three generous dishes or £24 for five, we raised a glass to this hip venue’s value. CC 0131 467 6984 | toastleith.co.uk SF EDINBURGH

NEW RESTAURANTS

Gaucho 4a St Andrew Square, City Centre Love and marriage, a horse and a carriage, steak and Malbec – the latter doesn’t have quite the same ring, but it’s still a match made in heaven. And Gaucho is Nirvana for fans of this particular pairing. With impressively high-end décor, the restaurant lies beneath a small bar area and is resplendent with dark, soft furnishings, plenty of mirrors and just enough fairy lights to remain classy. The wine list is not for the faint-hearted, but we chose an impressive Vino Patricia Malbec from Gaucho’s own vineyards in the Mendoza region.

My chicken liver starter was rich and satisfying, providing a great contrast to the freshness of the seafood taster at the other side of the table, with a soft shell crab causita being the highlight. Mains just had to be steaks (fillet and rib-eye) and they didn’t disappoint – all of Gaucho’s beef is Argentine. I recommend you try the creamy humita salteña, a traditional sweetcorn and mozzarella dish on the side, as well as chips, of course. Our dessert sampler was mildly disappointing, featuring a crumble that was heavy on berries and light on crumble. My advice is to go and eat so much steak that you simply can’t manage dessert. MB 0131 278 3410 | www.gauchorestaurants.com

Black Ivy 4 Alvanley Terrace, Bruntsfield The former Links Hotel in Bruntsfield has been given a new lease of life in the form of Black Ivy Neigbourhood Bar and Hotel. With a stylish interior, live music and a menu full of pub classics we were looking forward to sampling what was on offer. We went for starters of tomato and mozzarella flatbread along with a crab and smoked salmon fish cake, followed by a steak and ale pie, with skillet mac and cheese for mains – it was tasty and well-priced; think pub food with an edge. SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Hot to trot There’s more to Indian cuisine than vindaloo emporiums and flock-wallpapered curry houses, and the capital now boasts a huge range of gastronomy from the subcontinent

Mother India’s Cafe The Edinburgh outpost of this Glasgow institution has now become such a firm favourite among devotees of Indian food in the capital that it’s vital to book. A tapas-style approach means you can try a wide array of dishes, while it’s definitely worth taking a look at the substantial specials board, which is updated daily. Buzzy and friendly, with eclectic decor, the food is noticeably fresh (try the daal or fish).

0131 524 9801 | 3-5 Infirmary St, Old Town | www.motherindia.co.uk

Itihaas Agreed, Dalkeith is hardly central Edinburgh, but as Itihaas is the reigning Scottish Curry House of the Year, it demands inclusion. With a huge range of exquisite Indian and Bangladeshi dishes (the vegetarian options are especially impressive), comfortable decor and a surprisingly good wine list, Itihaas is worth travelling for if you love Indian food Throw in unobtrusive yet friendly service, and you’ve got a winning combination.

Navadhanya Only just over a year old, the aspirational and ambitious food at this outwardly ordinary Haymarket Indian restaurant is a revelation. The £40 sevencourse tasting menu (available with expertly paired wines) is incredible, as is the Railway Lamb and the lobster curry, while the kulfi is among the best you’ll ever find. This one-of-a-kind eatery is the sort of place you should set aside a whole evening to linger over. 0131 281 7187 | 88 Haymarket Terr, West End | navadhanya-scotland.co.uk

INDIAN JOHNSTONS RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

Dishoom As small groups can’t book, this newcomer has seen queues of Edinburghers line St Andrew Square since its opening. No wonder: its food is as unique as it is excellent. The sumptuous brand of Anglo-Indian food, which is heavily influenced by the street food brought to Bombay by Iranian immigrants in the 1920s, the wonderful cocktail bar in the basement and the unbeatable atmosphere mean this is a favourite venue for the capital’s foodies. I love the thick, creamy black daal, and it’s also a spectacular venue for breakfast.

0131 229 7173 | 250 Morrison St, Haymarket | themumbaimansion.com

Mumbai Mansion This aspirational (which sounds expensive but is only marginally more pricey than bog-standard options) South Indian restaurant is outstanding for fish dishes, while its eight-course vegetarian menu at £30 is also impressive. This is the sort of place where you could bring a date or go for a special anniversary meal. The sea bass starter and monkfish main course are good. Check out the huge wine list, which has almost 100 options ranging from £17 to £200. Despite its popularity locally, Mumbai Mansion doesn’t figure in many guides, which makes this a rare hidden gem.

0131 202 6406 | 3a St Andrew Sq | www.dishoom.com/edinburgh

The Mosque Kitchen Edinburgh is home to several outstandingly authentic yet commendably cheap Indian restaurants (Tuk Tuk on the Southside and Punjabi Junction on Leith Walk are both worth checking out). The Mosque Kitchen, near the central Mosque, fulfils both criteria in spades: not only are its hefty portions incredible value, the dishes pass muster with locals from the Mosque as well as hordes of students. There’s no alcohol or (apart from the naan bread) wheat, while the decor is utilitarian, but the positives are huge. 0131 667 4035 | 31 Nicholson Sq, Southside | www.mosquekitchen.com

MY CITY FASHION GARDEN

My city garden When artist Val Leckie and her husband, violin maker Paul Bowers, moved into their flat on Eglinton Crescent in 1997 they set about creating their perfect garden. It was completely derelict,’ says Val. ‘We had to have several huge bonfires.’ As the walls of the garden emerged, the couple discovered an extra ten feet of space through the tangle of shrubs and bushes. Work on the garden has been ongoing and has included the addition of a pond, which attracts all sorts of wildlife.

40 |

040-041_sfe01.indd 40

The raised vegetable plots are important to Paul, the vegetable grower. Traditional varieties such as new potatoes, parsnips, leeks, peas and beans are family favourites along with salad leaves, fresh herbs, strawberries and raspberries in the summer. The couple are in the process of moving out. ‘It is with sadness that we leave the garden to its new owner but we have so many happy memories to take with us to our new life on the West Coast.’

hen professional decorators Katie Webb and her partner Ian Bell bought an old bakery in Canonmills, their quirky taste and polished style proved to be the recipe for a beautiful four-bedroom, main door duplex. The couple, who run painting and decorating business Decorum Decor, bought the property and began work on converting it into a home in January 2011 before moving in the following May. ‘We bought it as a bakery; rat infested, crumbling, roof falling in, and so on,’ says Katie. ‘It was a mess.’ The project saw them make several structural changes to the unusually-shaped building. These included the addition of a floor at the wider end of the property, in what was the double-height industrial bakery, forming an open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen. The narrow end of the property was transformed into an entrance hall and sun lounge, with a corridor running the length of the space and the bedrooms located just off it. ‘There’s not really a room that’s square; there are a lot of really weird shapes and that’s purely because of the shape of the building, which is a wedge,’ she says. The ground floor became a commercial space and the couple focused their attention fully on creating their home on

Clockwise from top: The open-plan sitting room; the main bathroom with a recently-added mirror and dramatic, dark ceiling; bold wallpapers feature throughout the property; quirky items such as motorcycle helmets in the kitchen create a personal touch; styled mannequins are a recurring feature throughout.

‘The most prominent decorative feature are the mannequins’ high-end finishes and quirky accessories. The most prominent decorative feature of the couple’s home are the mannequins in the dining and sitting area. ‘These were from an antique shop on

Dundas Street, I think they’re from the early 1900s. They were in the basement of my office for a while until we figured out what to do with them. I came across the beautiful hand-painted floor in Copper Blossom restaurant by artist Lynsey Jean Henderson, who I then commissioned to paint the mannequins.’ The unique property is currently on the market as the couple search for their next project. ‘We feel we’ve done all we can with this place now and want to start something new, so we’ve got an eye out for the perfect project to undertake next.’ Clockwise from top left: The spare bedroom has a bath designed for two in its en-suite; each room in the property is an unusual shape; the exterior of the old bakery; owner Katie Webb.

‘I’m a bit of a gemstone nut’ followed by time spent working with the best in the business, including Stephen Webster and Hamilton & Inches. ‘I originally started off doing silver jewellery collections which I was wholesaling to shops and selling online. About a year in, someone

asked me to make an engagement ring and that sort of kicked off the whole bespoke jewellery thing. Now, around 95% of my business is bespoke. ‘I’m a bit of a gemstone nut and I think that’s where a lot of jewellers miss out. There are so many amazing stones out there that clients don’t know about. FASHION BEAUTY

Get the massage While we’re still enduring grey and cold weather, as well as trying to shake off the post-festive slump, there’s no better time to treat ourselves to some facial massage

Celebrity facialist Charlotte Connoley tells us why now is the time to add facial oil and massage to our beauty routines

T

his is the perfect time of year to give skin a boost. One of the best ways to get skin glowing is facial massage, which also de-stresses face muscles, boosts circulation, gets rid of toxins via the lymphatic system and improves skin’s texture. Massage helps the lymphatic system get rid of puffiness. Using a facial oil as part of your routine will rehydrate skin too. Don’t be put off trying an oil if you are prone to breakouts, as oils work to rebalance the skin. MBotanicals’ Rejuvenating Facial Elixir (£32) features anti-inflammatory prickly pear to nourish skin, while the Aromessence Lavandula Iris Facial Oil Serum from Decleor (£59) is a lovely oil for more mature skins, and Liz Earle’s Superskin Concentrate

60 |

060-061_sfe01.indd 60

for Night (£39.50) uses a blend of oils to soften and rebalance skin. Facial massage can be used to create a little ‘me time’. Start with a few drops of oil in the palms of your hands. Close your hands to warm the oil, then cup them over your nose and take a deep breath to relax mind and body. Place your palms on your cheeks, then onto your forehead and chin to distribute the oil. Use a firm pressure and work upwards and outwards, trying not to drag skin downwards. Build a little extra time into daily routines for facial massage – you’ll see and feel the benefits. Treatment reviews REV IEWED BY FIONA HENDRIE AN D MO RAG B O OT L AN D

Crystal Clear COMCIT facial When I heard Chamomile Sanctuary was offering Crystal Clear COMCIT facials as favoured by the likes of Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow, I had to see what all the hype was about. Crystal Clear COMCIT is the latest age-defying alternative to Botox and plumps, tightens and hydrates the skin. When I heard the process involved microneedles I did have my concerns but rest assured, it was painless. I went for the deluxe version of the facial which began with my therapist Iga cleansing my skin followed by microdermabrasion then a blast of cryo-oxygen to prepare my skin. This was followed by a microneedle roller, a COMCIT roller and a mask. The result? My skin felt great after the treatment. The slight redness faded overnight and my skin looked plump and hydrated. From £75, www.chamomilesanctuary.com, 0131 220 1000

Ila Gold Cellular Age Restore Face Therapy I was new to the Ila range of products and to the spa at the G&V Hotel prior to this treatment, but I’m now a convert to both. The spa is small, but perfectly formed and my therapist Regan was friendly and very informative, telling me all about the Ila brand. Ila products are organic, so perfect for my mature, rosacea-prone skin, but the exotic scents that enveloped me throughout the treatment were enough to let me imagine I was lying in a garden of tropical flowers – a refreshing change from the non-scented products I usually use. OFF ROAD DRIVING

Off the beaten track

Looking to try something new? Head over to Winton Castle in East Lothian for an offroad experience with Farx4. Under the watchful eye of expert instructor Hugh Roberts take either a Mitsubishi L200 or the classic Land Rover Defender around the course of purpose-built and natural off-road obstacles, including steep hills, tight turns and piles of logs. As well as taking amateurs around the trails, Hugh also trains mountain rescue teams so you know you’re in safe hands. During the session learn how to tread lightly and look after the vehicle as well as the fragile landscape through which you are travelling. Corporate team-building days, driver training and longer adventure days are also available. So don’t be a stick in the mud – head on up to Winton Castle and have a go. www.farxfour.com

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Actress Neve McIntosh got her first taste of drama growing up in Edinburgh before going on to star in Doctor Who, Shetland and Bodies WORDS BY NEV E M C INTOS H

©MIHAELA BODLOVIC

I was about seven or eight when we moved to Edinburgh – I do remember it was 1977. We lived on Montague Street, which the posh people would call Mon-ta-gyoo Street, but we called it Mon-tay-g Street. On stage I was always a bit of a show-off to be honest. Edinburgh Youth Theatre used to run classes every Tuesday and Thursday and they would get drama teachers in. It was a really brilliant melting pot – that definitely helped me. Off-stage I was a bit of a shy, awkward and gawky kid. When I had to talk in front of a group of people I’d go as red as a beetroot and stammer my way through. The youth theatre gave me a lot of self-confidence. I was lucky enough to be cast in a play at The Traverse during the most recent

98 |

098_sfe01.indd 98

Fringe, so it was great having two months back, walking around and seeing my old mates, as well as making new ones. I’m really proud of doing Gormenghast, Doctor Who and Bodies. People still say to me what a great series Bodies was.

‘I was always a bit of a show off to be honest’ One of the real highlights was doing the BBC Doctor Who Prom, when I was dressed up as Madame Vastra in front of 6,000 screaming people. It was crazy. It’s lovely, seeing yourself as an action figure. There’s now a little pop vinyl Vastra. I love Glasgow as well, but there’s something about Edinburgh that’s extra special, with all its wee nooks and crannies.
