hen you imagine hunting for truffles you may well picture a stereotypically brusque and weathered Frenchman, sporting fewer digits than he was born with, following a huge hairy pig as it grunts and sniffs its way around an ancient Provençal oak forest. Or perhaps that’s just me? If it’s you too then you may be surprised to hear that there is a truffle plantation, in a top secret
‘The first Scottish truffles were found on the Edinburgh site late last year’ location, a mere 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh city centre. Dr Paul Thomas is the scientist behind this plantation and 30 others in the UK. In fact he has trees planted in 23 countries around the world. ‘We’ve got trees as far afield as Nepal,’ he tells me. Paul provides the trees, which he creates in his facility and which have the truffle fungus growing symbiotically in their root systems. The fungus helps the tree to grow by providing nourishment and the tree gives sugar to the fungus in 8 |

return. The trees – oak, hazel, beech and birch – are then planted and should produce truffles within six years. Paul visits each of his sites regularly to collect data from monitoring stations and keep an eye on his trees. ‘Truffles like alkaline soil, which there’s not much of in Scotland, so we dig in SF EDINBURGH

limestone,’ says Paul. He monitors soil moisture, temperature and water uptake in order to pool data from the Edinburgh site with those of his other sites around the world and see what he can learn. The first Scottish truffles were found on the Edinburgh site late last year by Joyce and the talented nose of her springer spaniel Max. Training Max was easy after Joyce found his motivation. ‘Max knows that if he indicates a truffle he will get his tennis ball,’ says Joyce. ‘He’s worked out that it’s quicker to find a truffle than find a tennis ball.’ Because the Edinburgh plantation is fairly new, Joyce will plant ‘hot-pots’ – little boxes with a tiny bit of truffle in them – for Max to find. This ensures that he gets his reward and keeps him motivated. Last year, Max found around 12 trees that were producing around 24 truffles, weighing around half a kilo in total. But it’s still early days for the Edinburgh plantation, which was planted in 2011, so it may be several years before it goes into full production. ‘It really is like looking for a needle in a haystack,’ laughs

Joyce. ‘But we do it for the sheer joy of it.’ Max certainly seems to be having fun as he runs around manically, with his nose pressed tight to the ground. Truffles are a valuable commodity, with prices as high as £1,000 per kilo, but we’re not the only species who prize their rich, umami flavour. ‘Boars will take them,’ says Paul. ‘Although there are no boars here, squirrels and mice will certainly take the odd one. Truffles want to be eaten – that’s why they smell

This variant is mainly found in Europe but the best ones come from Northern Europe. The UK, Sweden and the mountains of Romania produce the most intense flavours, while the ones grown in Italy and southern Spain are milder with less aroma. 10 |

The first truffles Max found in the Edinburgh plantation went to Inver restaurant in Argyll and Tom Kitchin in Edinburgh. ‘The plan is to keep the truffles found here local,’ says Paul. ‘When you lift them out of the ground the flavour diminishes quickly, so the quicker you get them to the restaurant, the stronger the flavour.’ Pam, who runs Inver, was delighted to use Scottish-grown truffles. ‘The truffles arrived in December 2017. rom witches to foodies, Broughton Street has seen quite a radical change in the nature of the people populating its surroundings throughout the centuries. The street is the main artery of what was formerly the village of Broughton, located just outside the city of Edinburgh. Its name comes from the Anglian ‘broc tun’, meaning ‘farm beside the brook’. In fact, although now completely hidden from view, the Broughton Burn flowed across Broughton Street, starting from York Place and streaming towards Pilrig, where it joined the Water of Leith.
‘The street is the main artery of what was formerly the village of Broughton’ Broughton was at first part of the lands that King David I conceded to Holyrood Abbey in 1128. However, with the Reformation, properties that once belonged to the spiritual authorities shifted to non-religious owners, and the village turned into a feudal barony under the Justice-Clerk of King James IV, Sir Lewis Bellenden. In 1730, Broughton Street and Broughton Street Lane gave shelter to a group of Huguenots fleeing France after the Edict of Nantes – which granted protection to Protestants within the kingdom – was revoked in 1685. This community, mainly composed of silk-weavers, settled in a colony 16 |

The Witches’ Haunt The Barony of Broughton was made famous in the Middle Ages by the harsh oppression of people that were found guilty of practicing necromancy and witchcraft. Residents labelled as witches and wizards were often incarcerated in Broughton’s tolbooth, where the Baron’s courts were held. Here they were tried and then made the subject of a public execution. In his book, History of the Barony of Broughton, published in 1867, John MacKay reports of trials from that time: ‘A warlock, named Hamilton, who was tried on 22nd January, 1630, confessed to have begun his career from meeting the devil in Kingston Hills, Haddingtonshire, and had then engaged to serve him – had the power of making the devil appear, by striking on the ground three times with a fir stick, and that he appeared on these occasions in the form of a dog, cat, or crow; that he had attended many witches’ meetings, and he thereupon accused several women as witches, whom he said had been present with him at these sederunts.’

which was then known as Picardy Village, and contributed to the development of the area. Broughton also had its own tollbooth, which once stood at the crossroads with Barony Street, and housed both the court and the jail. Built in the late 16th century, the building was eventually demolished in 1829. The street and its surroundings were progressively absorbed by the expansion of Edinburgh during the 19th century at the time of the development of the New Town, making Broughton Street a main route between the new settlement and the historic centre. Many of the architectural features of the street as we know it today are the outcome of that period of expansion, when Georgian and Victorian houses took the place of smaller buildings and thatched cottages within the 18 |

village. A number of churches and schools were built, such as No 32, which was originally built as a George Heriot District School in 1853, and whose facade was first replaced by shops when the school closed in 1889. The street is also a landmark in the history of the LGBT community, hosting the first LGBT centre outside the US at No 58-60. The community centre opened back in 1974 and it’s the only building owned by LGBT in the UK. Politically speaking, the street was also the scene of heated protests when the Lothian Regional Council Social Work Committee decided to close the Broughton Unemployed Workers Centre at 103 Broughton Street back in 1994. The building was then taken over for what ended up being a six-month-long occupation.

Broughton Street has since evolved into a thriving place for people who love a good nibble and a sip sitting in a picturesque, bohemian atmosphere. Shoppers can get lost in the independent boutiques. From Kathy’s Knits to Nice Stuff, there’s a wee emporium for everyone’s taste, while florist Narcissus fills the corner with colour and aroma. Meat lovers should head on a pilgrimage to No 97, where butcher Crombies of Edinburgh holds the key to the perfect sausage. Coffee aficionados can rejoice too and appease their taste buds with a hot drink at Artisan Roast, a pioneer of coffee roasting in Scotland. Broughton Street is also the perfect place if you are looking for a pint, with the Barony Bar one of the venues that
stands out. A cosy, laid-back pub right in the middle of the street, it featured in the 2010 animation movie The Illusionist, which captured Edinburgh life in the 1950s. And, when summer allows for sipping a pint outdoors, the Outhouse on Broughton Street Lane offers a great beer garden. If you are looking for wines and spirits, Vino is the place and Villeneuve Wines is another go-to place for quality booze shopping. On the cocktail front, Treacle offers colourful drinks and filling, tasty breakfasts. The future seems nothing but bright for Broughton Street, with chef Scott Smith soon to move there from his award-winning restaurant Norn in Leith, to his brand-new project, Fhior. Summer is also a time for celebration, with the annual street party beginning on 23 June. While constantly innovating and evolving, Broughton Street owes its peculiar character to a sense of identity and belonging that it has managed to preserve throughout its history, making it a unique spot in the city’s landscape.

W
orking in the wine industry is a never-ending learning curve for the sommelier at Hotel du Vin, Hungarian wine guru Sandor Molnar. ‘When you’re studying wine there is always something to learn,’ he says. Studying for exams, blind tastings and trying to find the best pairings for the chef ’s offerings keep him constantly on his toes. Sandor works on the restaurant floor throughout the year but is particularly busy in the summer as Edinburgh welcomes legions of tourists, who are keen to tap into his knowledge. Checking orders from ten different wine suppliers, filling shelves and fridges and ensuring there are no shortages of any of the 215 different wines in the hotel’s cellar, are daily tasks. Sandor hosts regular wine tastings where he enjoys showcasing the diversity of old and new world wines. He also enjoys pairing wines for themed wine tasting dinners. ‘For example we have a
dinner planned on 28 May which is all about bubbles,’ says Sandor. ‘We will have six sparkling wines from all around the world and it will be hosted by one of the UK’s master sommeliers, Nigel Wilkinson. So as well as me talking about the wines we will have his expertise. There are only about 350 people in the world who are master sommeliers.’
‘Sandor hosts regular tastings showcasing the diversity of wine’ Sandor enjoys travelling and visiting vineyards. ‘I’ve been to Rioja and to Germany quite a few times,’ he says. ‘As well as having the theoretical knowledge you need to have hands-on experience of being at the vineyards and seeing how they make their wines.’ Getting a better understanding of the wines he is serving and immersing himself in his business seems the ultimate pleasure for Sandor.

Six by Nico 97 Hanover St, New Town EH2 1DJ Six by Nico has long been a phenomenon in Glasgow, where it went from being a small neighbourhood restaurant to something of a culinary sensation after moving to the foodie hotspot of Finnieston. That runaway success has been replicated in Edinburgh, where Scots-Italian chef Nico Simeone’s cosy 70-cover restaurant on the site of Passorn Thai is stowed out virtually every evening of the week. Simeone, who has worked at Number One at the Balmoral, and at Glasgow’s premier posh restaurant the Chardon d’Or, has brought his unique schtick to Edinburgh and has found a highly receptive audience for his innovative approach. This includes six-week runs of themed menus, which have included childhood favourites, illusions, a forest, New York and the magic of Disney films. The current theme is Willy Wonka, but our inaugural menu featured a remarkable modern six-course take on the traditional chippy. This started with ‘chips & cheese’ (parmesan espuma, crisp potato, curry oil), a wonderful take on ‘scampi’ (monkfish cheek, pea ketchup, herb pesto, bergamot), ‘steak pie’ (beef shin, caramelised onions), ‘fish supper’ (cod, beer, mussels, fennel, samphire), ‘smoked sausage’ (pork, salt-baked celeriac, caramelised apple) before rounding off with wonderful ‘deepfried Mars bar’ dessert (chocolate sorbet, orange, nougat). With television screens that connect to cameras in the open-plan kitchen and show Simeone plating-up each dish, our meal was never dull. Throw in an impressive selection of paired wines, excellent service, a vibrant atmosphere, and some stellar food – my favourite was the ‘scampi’, which was paired with a nice Picpoul de Pinet – and you know that you’re onto something special. Add to that prices that come to just £28 for a six course meal (plus £25 if you want paired wines) and you have all the ingredients for a major success story, which is exactlywhat Six by Nico is. Ransacked Black Oven 27-29 Marshall Street, Newington EH8 9BJ This Persian-inspired street food restaurant evolved from a mobile kitchen touring festivals and markets. RBO’s new home seems to be attracting a good mix of diners, from students to tourists. The food is tasty and in the main healthy, with good vegan, veggie and gluten-free options. The filling chicken shawarma salad came with tasty tabbouleh. The goat meat in the kebab was tender and well spiced. Casa de Mara 14 Eyre Place, New Town EH3 5EP There are plenty of Spanish restaurants in Edinburgh but if you want an authentic Catalan meal, Casa de Mara is the place to go. To start, we enjoyed melt-in-your-mouth croquettes and gooey-centred truita de patates (potato tortilla), while the calamars farcits (squid filled with prawns, squid, egg and almonds) was a personal favourite. The comforting main course – escudella de carn d’olla (chicken meatballs, stock, chickpeas and pasta) – was rounded off with a silky crema catalana. CC

Papillon 84 Commercial Street, Leith EH6 6LX Papillon is the newest addition to the Commercial Quay area of Leith. With plush décor, relaxed atmosphere and a diverse menu, there is lots to love, such as the satay prawns, with a delicate and fresh peanut flavour. The goat’s cheese bonbons, served with beetroot and treacly balsamic glaze, were just as tasty, but it was the stunning Picanha steak, cooked to perfection in the authentic Brazilian style and melting in the mouth, that was the standout dish. NEW RESTAURANTS
Chop House 88 Bruntsfield Place, Bruntsfield EH10 4HG All of a sudden, Bruntsfield is the place to be. Tom Kitchin is soon to open there, and it appears that the curly-haired impressario is being followed by Uncle Tom Cobley and all his foodie mates. However, Michael Spink and Mark Fraser have beaten them all to it with the third – and biggest – incarnation of Chop House following on from successful launches in Leith and in the Market Street arches behind Waverley Station. The decor at this 40-seater temple to the not-so-humble steak follows the usual Chop House recipe: pared back with industrial flourishes, burnished metal, orange banquettes and stools, an impressive bar and a faint but unmistakable hipster ambience. Upstairs at this restaurant built on the site of the unlamented Tribeca, the tables have views over Bruntsfield Links, while downstairs will be cosy and perfect in mid-winter. There’s also an eight-seater ‘Captain’s Table’ on the basement level. If Spink and Fraser have kept to the Chop House script when it comes to the decor, they’ve also done the same with the food, which is a sensible course of action given how successful they’ve been elsewhere. I’ve previously found that the quality is remarkably consistent across the group, and their third restaurant certainly maintains that record. Our two starters of scallop and pig cheek with apple and celeriac coleslaw, then crab cake with chipotle hollandaise, were excellent, but then so too were both main courses. The 350g rib eye with dripping chips was beautifully marbled and aged, while the roast sirloin (it was Sunday lunchtime) was sumptuously pink, and served with bone marrow gravy, mediocre roast spuds, seriously good honey roast root veg, buttered greens and a Yorkshire pudding the size of a brick. What’s not to like – apart from maybe the price, which remains unapologetically aspirational. But like all of the best things in life, it was worth it. RB 0131 629 6565 | www.chophousesteak.co.uk
Miss Woo’s 7 Bernard St, Leith EH6 6PW If you are in dire need of some deliciously fluffy pulled pork bao buns and quirkily named cocktails (my favourite being ‘ObiWan Negroni’), then Miss Woo’s in Leith is for you. So what did we have to eat? What didn’t we eat is more like it... The Japanese ramen, spicy Korean wings and succulent dumplings were all extremely tasty, but the best dish for me had to be the burnt end dirty fries topped with beef, pork, bacon, peach and porter. La Garrigue If you're looking for classic Gallic gstronomy, then this charming restaurant behind Waverley Station may not be for you. This establishment was the lovechild of chef-patron Jean Michel Gauffre and remains unashamedly dedicated to the food of the Languedoc region. Try the stuffed rabbit leg with a walnut wine sauce, or the casserole of confit duck with Toulouse sausage, pork belly and lingot beans.

Le Roi Fou This relative newcomer just off Broughton Street has been busy making a name for itself in a packed marketplace. Ambitious yet unpretentious French cuisine from chef patron Jerome Henry sees him using the best Scottish ingredients. If you're feeling flush, try the six-course tasting menu with paired wines: it's a rare treat (but ÂŁ90 each). If you're strapped, the pretheatre is decent value. The wine list is interesting and predominantly French.
Chez Jules The other restaurants on this list are all fairly pricey, but this city centre basement eaterie is exceptional value. Owned by Pierre Levicky (of Pierre Victoire fame), it provides good bistro favourites at sensible prices. Noisy and invariably packed, it features checked tablecloths and candles in bottles but doesn't come across as contrived. Cafe St Honoré Neil Forbes is one of Scotland's best-known chefs, and in his beautifully evocative little city centre restaurant hidden away down a cobbled lane you feel like you're back in Paris. Lauded for his emphasis on sustainability and provenance, Forbes is also a mean chef but don't expect classic French cuisine – this is avowedly Scottish food with Gallic flourishes. The wine list is superb while the dim lighting and exquisitely Parisian decor make this a wonderful place for a quiet tete-a-tete. A wealth warning: it's not cheap.

L'Escargot Bleu If I have a go-to place when I eat out in Edinburgh, it is this fantastic little Broughton Street restaurant. Fred Berkmiller's refreshingly traditional take on French cuisine means that if you want snails, foie gras, horse steaks and tarte tatin, this is where to come. But then the same is true if you are after a faultless boeuf bourgignon or coq au vin. Atmospheric, authentic and completely free of gastronomic cliches, L'Escargot Bleu – like its West End sibling L'Escargot Blanc – has built up a hard core of Francophile devotees, and if you give it a try you'll soon realise why.

Maison Bleue One of the grandees of the Edinburgh dining scene after 20 years on picturesque Victoria Street, this Old Town favourite mixes French cuisine with North African influences to produce memorable dishes. ICONIC FASHION BUILDING
Iconic building SURGEONS’ HALL MUSEUM Originally established as a medical teaching resource, Surgeons’ Hall is now one of the oldest museums in Scotland. Visitors can enjoy, or be repulsed by, the world’s largest collection of bone and tissue specimens, as well as works of art and artefacts. The displays in the museum map the changing nature of medicine and science and how they have been taught since the late 18th century. The Royal College of Surgeons was founded here in 1505 and collections have grown from 1699. The Playfair Building opened in 1832 to house the collections of surgeons and anatomists Sir Charles Bell and John Barclay. MY CITY FASHION GARDEN
A garden far from run of the mill Sandy Delap has been living in the Old Mill House in Temple Village in Midlothian with her husband and two sons for the past 16 years. When she first started tending the sloping gardens that run from the orchard just behind Old Kirk at the top of the hill, past the raised veg beds, around the house and down to the River South Esk and the derelict mill building below, she admits to being a little lost. ‘I was taking plants to a neighbour to ask him if they were flowers or weeds,’ she laughs. A Certificate in Practical Horticulture from the RBGE gave her the confidence that she needed to get started with some planting. With the help of gardener Liz, who visits once a week, the garden is blooming with a vast array of daffodils and narcissus. The cornus kousa chinensis tree is Sandy’s pride and joy and on our visit she was patiently awaiting the arrival of its delicate white flowers. Even the old mill stone itself has been incorporated into the garden and now serves as a planting table or a nice place to sit and listen to the river flowing by. ‘I love working down by the river,’ says Sandy. ‘The sound of the water is like voices that keep me company as I work.’ Sandy’s garden, along with six others in Temple Village, are open to the public through Scotland’s Garden Scheme from 2pm – 5pm on Sunday 10 June. www.scotlandsgardens.org/templevillage-gardens/

nterior designer Xanthe Weir owns this stylish apartment in one of Edinburgh’s finest Georgian townhouses on Royal Terrace. The two-bedroom property features a modern sitting room, bespoke kitchen, dining room, large bathroom, utility room and exterior courtyard. It was the first of the terraces on this street to be built by William Playfair, and Xanthe’s background in interior design makes the inside a unique and refreshing space. Each room is stylishly furnished with a mix of high street and mid-20th-centur y furniture, accented with items from

The f lat is mainly neutral to ensure it does not date and to appeal to wider audiences, but clean lines and bursts of colour keep the property fresh and modern. ‘We tr y to keep it neutral but with a bit of interest,’ says Xanthe. in the bedroom. The boutique apartment also incorporates Xanthe’s love of art, and often features pieces by one of her favourite photographers, Juno Calypso. When Xanthe moved from London four years ago through her job in marketing and shop design with Paul Smith, she initially used the f lat to showcase her pieces. When she got her own shop on Dundas Street, Xanthe decided to let the space through Airbnb. ‘I like the way Airbnb works. It’s rewarding to hear feedback from the guests and tailor things uniquely for them,’ says Xanthe. ‘Being a letted property, the furniture has to be robust, but if you show you care and style it interestingly, people will respect it.’ Xanthe is currently planning
renovations to her family home above the property while managing her interior design company DecorAir with business partner Rachel Richmond. DecorAir works with local tradesmen and specialises in creating environments for the buy-to-let sector.

In safe hands The ancient art of calligraphy never goes out of style, as Edinburgh’s Susie Leiper proves with her stunning creations

alligrapher and painter Susie Leiper is surrounded by quills and Chinese brushes in her bright New Town mews studio. You may not think that you’ve seen Susie’s work, but I can assure you that you have. It was Susie’s fair hand that produced the Gaelic poetry calligraphy on the new Royal Bank of Scotland polymer notes. ‘It’s nice to be able to carry your CV around in your pocket,’ she laughs. Susie learnt the ancient art of calligraphy when she lived in Hong Kong in the 1980s and now combines commissions with her art, which often incorporates calligraphy or mountain forms inspired by the writings of Nan Shepherd. By some strange twist of fate, it is Shepherd who appears on the front of the £5 note, while Susie’s calligraphy graces the back. Being one of six scribes charged with creating a hand-written, handilluminated

version of the bible for St John’s University in Minnesota was a four-year labour of love for Susie. The work was slow and nervewracking, every morning starting with cutting the goose quill to the perfect size. This can only be produced from one of three outer left wing feathers of the goose, as they curve in an ideal shape to fit the

Working at a speed of around half a page a day, it was a test of Susie’s nerves to ensure she didn’t make mistakes. ‘After all those years of discipline, I felt that I could do anything and decided to paint more.’ Much of Susie’s work involves lettering and painting. Her style is inspired by her time in China, but with a modern feel. Having exhibited at Edinburgh’s Open Eye Gallery, Susie is about to show her work at the Tatha Gallery in Newport-onTay. A
t just nine miles by five, Jersey is small but perfectly formed by the sea. Closer to France than the UK, it benefits from a mix of cultural influences and a favourable climate. The Club Hotel & Spa is located in the centre of the island’s capital, a short stroll from the shops and the bars and restaurants on the waterfront. The hotel boasts a stunning spa with salt water pool and thermal suite. We were treated to an aromatic fusion massage by skilled therapist Atlanta before reclining in the luxury of the relaxation room. Afternoon tea at The Club is a luxurious affair featuring delicate
savoury and sweet treats as well as scones with jam, cream and Jersey black butter (a rich preserve made from apples and spices) – and champers, of course! Bohemia restaurant within The Club is the jewel in an already glittering crown. With more Michelin-starred menus than you can shake a stick at, we were spoilt for choice. Chef Steve Smith’s masterful touch made for an enjoyable evening of local delights including beef tartare, turbot and lamb. We had time to visit some of the island’s incredible beaches, the dramatic Gorey Castle, the zoo, museum and art gallery and the fascinating war tunnels as well as spotting the gorgeous Jersey cows. theclubjersey.com / jersey.com

Here comes the sun With holidays fast approaching, Fiona Fowley of salon collection Zen Lifestyle reveals her top tips to make sure you are summer ready
1. Slough away dead skin cells, environmental toxins and season-long
build-up of product to help boost glowing skin. A deep exfoliation and glycolic peel can have a transformational effect on skin and my favourite is DiamondTome microdermabrasion (from £55, Zen) which also works to reduce fine lines. Or try a 30-minute Lunchtime Peel (£48) for instant, noticeable results that last. 2. Sunscreen is part of my year-round daily beauty regime and I can’t emphasise how important it is to invest in a quality sunscreen. A simple SPF isn’t enough, we need a broad-spectrum protector to minimise free radical and environmental damage. I swear by Heliocare Gel SPF 50 (£19), which is oil-free, light and excellent under makeup. 3. Daily dry body brushing is great for exfoliating skin but it also boosts circulation, aids lymphatic drainage and reduces cellulite. For extra smooth skin, I love Elemis Lime & Ginger Salt Scrub, but if you have stubborn cellulite then I’d recommend investing in some Exilis 360 body treatments (from £150). This new technology reduces cellulite and fat and helps body contouring. 4. Start upping your water intake now. There’s no point spending a small fortune on new season treatments, products and makeup if your skin is dehydrated and greylooking. Get plump, glowing skin by keeping well hydrated. 5. Less is more with makeup in the summer months so I always treat myself to HD Brows and lash extensions to create a groomed look without any effort.

The relaxing back massage was an unexpected treat, as was the anti-ageing hand treatment which was much-needed after a long winter. Sterling Effort SH Jewellery celebrate their second year as Jewellery Store of the Year
T
here is a lot for SH Jewellery to celebrate right now. The jewellery boutique in Morningside has just celebrated being in business for seven years this month, after being crowned ‘Jewellery Store of the Year’ in the Scottish Independent Business Awards for the second year running. The gallery was opened in May 2011 by silversmith Sarah Hutchison. The award-winning designer had been selling her own silver and jewellery designs internationally for seven years before opening up the contemporary gallery, selling her work alongside another 35 different designers. Sarah spent the previous 18 months managing a contemporary gallery in London’s Hatton Garden before deciding to bring a similar concept to Edinburgh’s Morningside. The gallery sells predominantly silver work but does also stock some gold and platinum too and often undertakes commissions and remodelling projects. Prices start from as little as £25 so there is something to suit everyone’s budget, whether that be a birthday gift or special piece for yourself.
While running the gallery and curating the designers work that is shown, Sarah has taken on some big commissions herself, including making a diamond studded teapot for the Chitra Collection – the world’s biggest teapot collection, which is privately owned in London. The gallery has some popular jewellers on show at all times and new designs arriving in most months to keep the collections fresh and vibrant. If you haven’t been in before, pop in to check out their collections or find them on social media. A new website is on its way this year, but Sarah encourages people to visit the store to get a real feel for the jewellery, which she says often comes alive when worn. My Edinburgh Scotland’s very own celebrity chef Tony Singh gives SF Edinburgh his top tips for a day spent in the capital and reflects on his Leith upbringing WORDS BY TONY SING H
I grew up in Leith, a free and independent state which Edinburgh is attached to. It was a fantastic place to grow up. Being the port of the city there’s always been a mix of people. Leith has a real sense of community. I’ve moved along the shore as far as Portobello. I’ve still got friends and family in Leith and the Sikh Gurdwara temple is there so I’m in Leith all the time.
If I had to experience Edinburgh in just one day I would come down Calton Hill and go across to the cemetery where there is a statue of Lincoln – it’s the only statue of Lincoln outside of America – because a lot of Scots fought in the civil war. Then I’d walk to the bottom of the Royal Mile and see Holyrood Palace, then go up Arthur’s Seat.
‘Leith has a real sense of community’
My favourite place in the city is Leith Walk. It’s just so diverse. Whenever I walk down it from Princes Street or the New Town I feel like I’m coming home. It’s very vibrant and very bohemian.
Then I’d definitely have to have a look at the castle followed by a drink and food in Leith. Finally, I’d head back up into town for drinking and dancing along George Street and St Andrew’s Square.
Edinburgh is a very green city. It’s a great city to walk in and I walk everywhere. I love wandering up Calton Hill.
I love living in Portobello and I run supper clubs and cookery classes from my house. They are great fun. tonysingh.co.uk
