Burrow Hill - Pirbright

Peacefully sequestered on a private gravel lane, Gate House evokes a magnificent degree of grace and grandeur. Set within beautifully planted, capacious grounds and gardens of 2 acres, detached garaging, tennis court and exemplary outdoor swimming pool, it offers picturesque vistas and an enviable degree of exclusivity and seclusion but within the heart of the village.

GUIDE PRICE £2,750,000

Unfolding over a commendable 4,447 sq ft, with a fluid three storey layout and a refined pared-back aesthetic. Spacious reception rooms have feature fireplaces, the study is impeccably appointed and a tremendous kitchen/breakfast room unites with a stunning family room to create something incredibly special.

Hidden from view on Burrow Hill, Gate House instantly engenders a wonderful feeling of exclusivity but with all the convenience of sitting in the heart of the popular village of Pirbright. Dating back from the early 1900’s with only three other houses on the road, originally built for daughters of a local gentleman.

Framed by statuesque trees, a sweeping turning circle driveway gives a grand introduction to admire the elegance and charm of an extensive facade. Step inside and you’ll find the soft subtle warmth flowing throughout a spacious layout, beautifully enhancing the elegance of its architecture and creating an impeccable home.

Behind a gabled entrance a tremendous entrance hall hints at what’s to come and gives an instant glimpse of the glorious gardens that stretch out to the rear. It unfolds to either side onto two marvellous reception rooms with wonderful focal point fireplaces. To the left a spacious triple aspect sitting room provides a supremely tranquil place to relax and unwind with French doors giving every excuse to step out onto the terracing.

Equally admirable, across the hall a formal dining room is resplendent in red. The laurel wreath patterns complement the brass fittings of tastefully chosen wall lights, while a striking central pendant allows the generous proportions to double as an exceptional pool/games room after dinner.

A separate study is notably appointed with a wealth of beautifully crafted oak cabinetry creating a superior environment when working from home and a sophisticated retreat to escape at the end of a busy day.

6 | www.seymours-estates.co.uk/prestige

However, it is undoubtedly the fluid and highly considered collaboration of the kitchen/breakfast room and family room that creates the heart and hub of this Pirbright home. The open plan layout produces a naturally flowing space to spend time together. Superbly appointed with sleek cream cabinets encased in the rich timber tones of solid wood waterfall counter tops, the kitchen achieves the fine balance of being both stylish and functional.

A bank of floor to ceiling storage houses a trio of first class ovens, integrated fridge freezer and a gas hob sits under a ceiling mounted extractor. The wrap-around design allows you to be an integral part of what’s going on around you when cooking, while cleverly incorporated recessed shelving adds discreet space for your favourite recipe books.

The polished tile floor reaches cohesively into both the double aspect breakfast area and a heavenly family room that extends out beneath a majestic vaulted ceiling with apex windows. French doors

in each zone once again connect you seamlessly with the terracing making it irresistibly easy to step outside and take a stroll to the pool or tennis court.

A large utility room and two separate cloakrooms complete the ground floor.

A prized principal bedroom with west and south facing vistas stretches decadently across one wing of the house. A fitted dressing room provides an enviable measure of storage without encroaching on the plentiful main bedroom area and a sumptuous ensuite has both a contemporary bathtub and glass framed shower.

Three further first floor bedrooms include one with a deluxe ensuite of its own, while a stylish family shower room looks out over the gardens. Explore further and you’ll find a top floor landing that is ideally sized to accommodate a desk/play area. Two interconnecting bedrooms provide a wealth of versatility for teenagers to have their own sense of space, and an exemplary bathroom offers the height of luxury with an indulgent rainfall wet room shower and bathtub in a seriously sultry tile setting.

With natural light tumbling in from above, a quintessential turning staircase heads gently upstairs where an abundance of outstanding double bedrooms pepper the first and second storeys and continue the exquisite design themes that elevate this home from others.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Seymours Prestige Homes catches up with Ilona Davis the new director of West Horsley Place Trust

“I want the house to be a place of creativity and I want the estate to champion the natural beauty of Surrey, but most of all, I want to continue the dynamic vision that Bamber and Christina had for West Horsley Place.”

These are the words of Ilona Davis the new director of West Horsley Place Trust, the magnificent medieval estate that was bequeathed to esteemed author and former University Challenge host, the late Bamber Gascoigne, by his aunt Mary, Duchess of Roxburgh.

Taking over the role of director in November 2022, Ilona’s first encounter with the estate was via Grange Park Opera last summer. In something of fortuitous coincidence, she then spotted a job advertisement for a new director, she applied and the rest, as they say, quite aptly, is history.

“I was looking for a new challenge and West Horsley is a gift,” she enthuses. “Yes there is a lot of work to be done, the building is still on the ‘at risk’ register but while we do all we can to conserve the building, my aim is to really bring the estate to the public and create a sustainable arts space that can be enjoyed by everyone.”

The West Horsley Place Trust was formed in 2014 when it was decided by new owners Bamber and Christina that the house and its sprawling 350-acre grounds should be opened to the public.

sales@seymours-ph.co.uk | 01483 228723 | Seymours Prestige Homes | 9
West Horsley Place ╕ Richard Lewisohn

Their great love of the arts formed the outline of their plans with the couple keen to host performances somewhere on the property. It just so happened that at the same time, the then Hampshire-based Grange Park Opera company was searching for a new home.

Its entrepreneurial founding director Wasfi Kani approached the new owners of West Horsley Place who said the decision to build the Theatre in the Woods was taken in minutes as the team chatted with the Gascoignes over coffee and biscuits.

And while builders got to work outside, so plans were developed to rescue enough of the house to welcome its first visitors.

Since re-opening, the estate as hosted a wealth of tours, classes and talks and has amassed a good number of volunteers all willing to share in the burden for caring for such a heritage-rich home.

“It is really important to me, as it was to Bamber and Christina, who was herself an artist, that the house is not just preserved in aspic. The intention is for it to be a real creative hub, alive with people using it for a whole host of activities.

“I want people to be able to feel and understand the history - it has one of the most impressive libraries around and I want visitors to be able to touch the books and read the inscriptions - some of which date back to the 16th century - not just to be told about the or gaze at them on the shelf. Of course, this may need some figuring out, but it was certainly the wish of the last owners that while the house is from the past, it is not stuck in it.”

Ilona’s plans also stretch far beyond the mansion’s walls and into the surrounding fields where she aims to encourage people to walk and explore the stunning Surrey countryside - before calling in at the Tiger Lilly coffee pop-up for refreshments.

“It is another way to welcome visitors of all ages,” she explains. “For people to spend time in the house - maybe on a course or on a workshop - and then to have a walk or a picnic and to make a day of it. I want families to be at ease here and for the estate to be somewhere children want to come. That way we instil a love for history and the arts that will ultimately ensure West Horsley Place’s future.”

“Everyone worked so hard to get things up and running, but then Covid came and as this was such a new project, a baby really, the rug was really pulled out from beneath the team. I know we are not the only venue to experience this, but it was so early in our offer, we had a lot to do to catch up.”

Family matters

In 2014 Bamber Gascoigne, a historian and broadcaster received a call from a solicitor. After being informed of the death of his 99-year-old aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe he was summoned to a meeting to determine the terms of the will. He duly attended the meeting and was handed a copy of the will which on page 10 stated that his aunt had bequeathed West Horsley Place to him. He had no idea that he was due to inherit, a realisation that he described as both ‘a thrill and a very alarming new challenge’.

Structural surveys revealed that the house needed more than £7 million to bring it back to a safe and healthy condition, with a further £2 million required for the other listed features. Concerned but undeterred the Gascoignes formed a charity, then named the Mary Roxburgh Trust, and held auctions of various artefacts from the property to get renovations under way, for what he described as ‘an exciting adventure’.

Sadly, Bamber passed away in February 2022, but under the care of the West Horsley Place Trust the adventure continues...

History in the making

The timber framed, 50 room house dates back to the 15th century and was originally owned by statesman, soldier and translator John Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners.

Since then it has been in the residence of the Marquess of Crewe, Henry Currie, MP for Guildford before being left to Mary Duchess of Roxborough. She closed most of the house, living in just five rooms until her death, aged 99 in 2014.

In order to secure the future of the estate many of her possessions were auctioned at Sotheby’s. Expected to raise in the region of £2.2m, the eventual total was £8.8m.

Grange Park Opera

The Theatre in the Woods was borne out of the need for the then ‘homeless’ Grange Park Opera’s to find a new home. From initial conversations in 2016, came in a matter of months a fully-fledged 700-seater opera house that received its first audience on June 8, 2017.

Since then it has produced critically acclaimed interpretations of classic works Otello as well as groundbreaking pieces such as it’s World Cup inspired Gods of the Game. Its 2023 season kicks off with Tristan & Isolde and you can find out more at: grangeparkopera.co.uk

Ghostly goings on...

If you think the magnificent house looks a tad familiar, then you may have seen it as the backdrop to many film and television shows. Probably the most famous is the touching BBC sitcom Ghosts, starring and created by the team behind the award-winning Horrible Histories. The cast and crew take over the Surrey spot from early spring when the house is closed to the public, but you can follow the showbiz goings on via a behind-thescenes tour later in the year.

Seymours Prestige Homes shares a flavour of what the finest homes will be ‘wearing’ over the coming months

Elena Romanova Interiors

Situated in Surbiton, Elena Romanova Interiors has been one of Surrey and South West London’s premier design agencies for several years. According to Elena, the bespoke, personal, one-to-one services are dedicated to helping clients create a ‘true sense of place, reflecting your desires, personality, and style’.

“This spring is bringing a modern artisan feel,” says Elena. “It has a serene, subdued colour palette interspersed with warmer tones of terracotta, coral and muted pinks.

“With everything going on in the world it feels like people are looking for something very soothing which will be reflected in bedroom pieces and styles. However, having said that, if people are looking to go bolder then wallpaper is very much back - and whole rooms too, featuring bright patterns.”

Elena says that as people continue to work from home, the need to find a cosy corner amid the open-plan living is also something to watch this year.

She says: “Granny chic may be making a bit of a move over the next few months but overall, the theme for spring is definitely warm, whether that’s walls, floors or soft furnishings.” elenainteriors.co.uk

Alongside the interior design and architecture services, Stephenson Wright has also launched a furniture line in partnership with local artisan creators to offer clients the very best in Surrey craftsmanship.

Juliette says: “We try not to be too trend driven - rather what is right for each client and their home. However, the spring feels for us are a natural and neutral base of camel and fresh cream with a fresh introduction of coral and blue tonesblue is always present in our schemes.

“We are seeing more large scale embroidered floral patterns and textures but we would use them sparingly as cushions rather than all over a sofa. By using the trend colours in accessories and loose items they can easily be switched in and out with the seasons.”

We will be encouraging clients to be mindful about where items are sourced from and we will certainly be aiming to produce designs that are kind to the planet as well as pleasing on the eye.

“Things are definitely softer and warmer for Spring 2023. I think this is the year that we say goodbye to grey. It is time to embrace stone, pebble, coffee and cream. Looks remain stylish and classic as we look to rebalance the way live.”

Carlton Road - Horsell

Formerly home to the famous cricketing Bedser brothers who played firstclass cricket for Surrey & England, representing England 51 times during the 1950s and regarded as England’s greatest cricketing twins.

GUIDE PRICE £2,250,000

The Bedsers, who grew up in Horsell, built and lived at The Coppice until 2010. Sir Alec and Eric Bedser are now remembered with two life-size bronze statues, representing the Horsell cricketing legends, unveiled by The Lightbox gallery and museum in 2015. The statues, are positioned at either end of the Bedser Bridge in Woking.

The Coppice certainly looks nothing like it once did in the 1950’s and has been subject to an incredible transformation into what is now a contemporary family home. Situated in an enviable semi-rural position, fronting Horsell Common, and yet within a short distance of the major centre of Woking. The contemporary nature of the property has been achieved through the extensive use of quality materials, both inside and out, with a focus on the design and the creation of open spaces, which flow through much of the accommodation.

sales@seymours-ph.co.uk | 01483 228723 | Seymours Prestige Homes | 39

The kitchen/dining room is set centrally at the rear of the house, and is the heart of the home for day to day living. Glass overhead and large bi-folds connect the house to the garden.

To one side there is a generous dual aspect sitting room with impressive feature fire place, whilst the other side offers a further flexible reception in addition to the study/gym.

Further downstairs accommodation consists of the utility room with walk in pantry and integral double garage.

To the 1st and 2nd floor of the property are six double bedrooms and four bathrooms, three of which are ensuite.

The house is announced on approach via a brick pillared entrance with electric gates, opening into a large driveway, with ample parking and turning space, leading to the integral garage.

40 | www.seymours-estates.co.uk/prestige
The stunning master bedroom has a real emphasis on space, taking up the entire east wing of the property to include an elegant dressing area with central island and luxurious ensuite bathroom.

To the rear of the property, the garden continues to impress. At approaching 1/2 an acre, and south facing, it is a rare plot size for the location.

With a great level of privacy and seclusion. There is a large terrace, which spreads out along the whole of the rear of the property, with several access points from the bi-folding or French doors leading from the reception rooms, ideal for entertaining.

Beyond the expansive lawn and covered outdoor kitchen with bar area, lies a further garden. A beautiful hedge separates and provides extra privacy to this garden, which includes formal box hedging, vegetable gardens and an enclosed seating area.

The location is enviably situated on the cusp of Horsell Common and the village of Horsell offering an excellent range of shops, schools and facilities. Conveniently the larger town of Woking is only a 15 min walk away too and provides a further extensive range of shopping and recreational facilities including the Peacocks Centre and the mainline station. (Woking to London Waterloo from 26 minutes)

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Jane McGowan catches up with Guildford resident Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock to discuss just how watching a kids TV show sparked a life-long passion for science

When it comes to self-description, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is admirably concise. She is, she says, a “space scientist and science communicator”. Yet to describe this as an understatement is an understatement all of its own... First up, she holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering, as well as a degree in physics. She is the managing director of Science Innovation, a company set up to change the demography of UK scientists – in part by promoting science to children in inner city schools – and in 2013 became copresenter of enduring BBC classic The Sky at Night, following in the giant footsteps of Sir Patrick Moore. She has also worked for the Ministry of Defence, received an MBE (2009) and authored more than 20 books, of which the latest – Am I Made of Stardust? – is out now.

An impressive résumé. One birthed, no doubt, in a precocious scholarship and instinctive intellectual curiosity. Well no actually, it was... “The Clangers,” she laughs. “I loved the little furry creatures. They were so kind and they lived in space and they just captured my heart. “A few years ago, the programme [a stop motion animation series for children] was celebrating its 50th anniversary and they made a special episode entitled The Visitor which featured me as a little puppet. “So, in a way, my crazy childhood dream of getting into space came true.”

Born in Islington in 1968, Maggie is now a contented resident of Guildford, where she lives with her husband, Martin, and their 12-year-old daughter, Lauren. “We started out looking to buy a house in London, but quickly realised you didn’t get much for your money. So we rented in Woking and then moved here, as you get the best of town and country. We fell in love with the 1930s houses. Basically Guildford had everything we wanted.”

It’s the kind of stability that was manifestly absent from Maggie’s childhood, during which she attended 13 different schools as she was passed between her estranged parents. Aged eight, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and has openly admitted that she and school “did not get on”.

“Basically, until the diagnosis I was put in the remedial class and had a terrible time,” she explains. “I just felt disconnected. “As a dyslexic, I found that history and English and other essay subjects just went out of the window. I cannot spell for toffee, but I am very logical, which made science more attractive. I was also obsessed with space and I knew that science was the way in. “I hadn’t been doing very well, but once I began to focus on the sciences it really helped my other subjects too.”

Maggie opted to study maths, chemistry, physics and biology at A-level. Back in the 1980s, however, physics was not generally regarded as a subject for girls, and Maggie was sent to the boys’ school to study.

“I think it is better nowadays,” she reflects, “but more still needs to be done to encourage young people of both sexes to study those science subjects.” A task that Maggie, more than anyone, is doing her utmost to accomplish. “I have spoken to about 350,000 children in the UK and around the world to try and encourage them to consider science,” she reveals.

“I want to encourage the next generation of engineers and space scientists. So I go out to schools and events and tell them a bit about my story, and a few of the things that are happening in space, and encourage them to think about a STEM career.”

In Stardust, building on her work in schools, Maggie sets out to answer some of the burning questions that children ask about space. “Kids love space when they are young. They’re fired up by science in general, but we have to harness that. As little children we create experiments all the time – with water, sand, paint and especially with things like LEGO, where we build, engineer and think about colour and shapes.

“In schools, I tell children that I ask questions about science in my job, and that by doing the same they are already scientists themselves. Then I ask them to come and join us when they are older. There is an inner scientist in all of us. It just needs to be nurtured.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about a career in space science, insists Maggie, is that the only place you can work is NASA – a theory that she is working hard to debunk. “It is absolute rubbish,” she asserts. “In the UK the sector is booming. I used to work at Surrey Satellite Technology on the Research Park in Guildford and it has been fascinating to watch that grow and develop.

In her own career, it was landing the job on The Sky at Night that really thrust her to the forefront of public consciousness. It was, she freely admits, a daunting task to plug the yawning gap left by Sir Patrick Moore; a man who, after more than 55 years at the helm, had become synonymous with all things astronomical.

“I was gripped with a mixture of excitement and terror,” she laughs. “He was the longest-serving presenter ever of a single show, so they were very, very big shoes to fill.”

Now a regular presence on our screens, Maggie has since appeared on a whole host of shows – serious and light-hearted alike –including comedy panel game Duck Quacks Don’t Echo and the space themed Out of this World. She also finds time to touch down and indulge in various earthbound hobbies.

“I am learning French very, very slowly from an app and have been known to lose a few hours watching TikTok with my daughter, which is like falling down a black hole of a different kind.

“I also like walking. During lockdown, I found myself being questioned about the fact that I walked at night. But without the planes or light pollution the night skies were even more wonderful. I just told people: ‘I am an astronomer. This is when I want to be outside.’ It made perfect sense to me.”

What she really wants, however, is not just to stare up at space, but – her Clangers cameo aside – to get into it. “I think everyone should have a dream – one crazy dream that they never stop trying to realise,” she enthuses. “Mine has always been to get into space, and although I may never achieve it, I have done so many wonderful things because of it. “We all need to aim high. We all need to reach for the stars – and just grab all the stuff on the way to them.”

Am I Made of Stardust? (£12.99), by Maggie Aderin-Pocock, is published by Buster Books and in bookshops now

Seymours Prestige Homes

A TRIUMPH OF GENEROSITY

Fundraising more than £33,000 for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices was a crowning achievement for Seymours in 2022

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice is a patient-led charity that delivers palliative and end of life care throughout north-west Surrey. Seymours may have been part of the local community 30 years now, but for every new colleague that joins us, we teach them how important it is to us to give back to the local community and support local charities and good causes. There’s none closer to our hearts than Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, which is why we pledged to raise £1000 for every year of their 25 year history in 2022.

From mountain climbs, to regatta racing, golf tournaments and marathon running, team Seymours have enjoyed every second of our fundraising efforts throughout the year and were delighted to not only reach, but exceed our fundraising goals, donating more than £33,000 by the end of the year!

Since the last issue of Prestige Homes Magazine there have been two high profile events that crowned a fantastic year of fundraising. The Dove Ball returned for the first time since the pandemic, inviting the hospice’s most dedicated and high profile supporters to a sparkling black tie ball. Seymours were delighted to attend in support for a night filled with heartwarming speeches and an incredible fundraising action with several ‘money can’t buy’ prizes.

Christ Church in Jubilee Square, Woking once again hosted the annual Seymours Carol Concert in aid of Woking & Sam Beare Hospice. Hosted by our very own Nolan Dark and Lisa Athron, we brought together choirs from local schools to perform alongside West End musical stars and The Salvation Army band, for a performance of Mary Poppins.

Such a vibrant display of music and community spirit was the perfect way to get in the festive spirit and a perfect celebration for the culmination of a year of fundraising.

Commenting on behalf of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, Lucy McNally said “We’re blown away by the support of Seymours, to raise this much money really shows their commitment to our cause and we’re not only grateful for the donation but also the awareness and connection to the communities we’re developing with this relationship”.

Rivalled only by the main living area for an instant wow factor, upstairs the principal suite with its high rooflight and Juliet balcony gives a master class in interior design.

Beautifully lit by French doors looking out over the greenery of the glorious garden, its marvellous layout comes complete with sultry headboard lights and a wealth of storage within fitted wardrobes. However, it’s the luxurious ensuite that steals the show with mood lighting, an indulgent freestanding bathtub and commendably large walk-in shower. Two further double bedrooms echo the consistently high levels of presentation. Producing ideal accommodation for all ages they share a sleek family bathroom with a lavish double ended bathtub and a ceiling mounted walk-in shower.

It’s good to note that the full renovation of this Woking property includes new low energy double glazed window units throughout.

Bordered by beautifully planted beds offering a cornucopia of colour and greenery, an expansive manicured lawn stretches out before you giving every opportunity for children to play while you relax and unwind.

High fencing lends a prized feeling of privacy and seclusion, and an open timber barbecue hut with lights and power is a marvellous addition. Take a stroll on a charming stepping stone path across the lawn and you’ll find a superior garden office that produces an inspirational retreat for anyone working from home.

“Highly Recommended. We sold our property through Seymours Prestige at the end of last year. We spoke to a few ‘high end’ agents before choosing Seymours, and went with them mainly for the passion of Lloyd Moss and his knowledge of the area. During the process we engaged with most of the Horsell office and were impressed by all of them. Since then we’ve been dealing with a number of agents (still trying to find a new house) and very few are of Seymours standard. Knowledge, passion and client focused.”

FOOD OF THE GODS

For the winter edition of Seymours Prestige Homes magazine, we explore some of the finest culinary experiences that Surrey has to offer.

Surrey has long been recognised as one of the UK’s premier food and drink hotspots. It has a dazzling array of eateries that criss-cross the county offering a range of produce to tempt a range of palates.

It will come as no surprise to learn that a total of eight Surrey establishments have been recognised by the prestigious Michelin Guide, with a sprinkling presented with the much coveted Michelin Star.

Here we offer a flavour of what you will find, should you fancy stepping out for a spot of fine dining at its very best.

Sorrel, Dorking

Headed up and owned by the sensational Steve Drake, Sorrel offers contemporary fine dining that combines a flavoursome mix of fresh seasonal produce. The restaurant is based within the quiet splendour of a 17th-century building nestled within the Surrey Hills where guests are treated to paired-back elegance and attentive, well-informed service.

Working alongside some of the best - at Chez Nico at Ninety Park Lane, with Marco Pierre White at The Oak Room, as well as at Pied a Terre and Aubergine - Steve earned a first Michelin star while at Drake’s On the Pond in Abinger Hammer before securing the honour for 14 years while heading up Drake’s in Ripley. His work at Sorrel has been met with great acclaim, securing that all-important star within 12 months of opening in 2017.

Details: The Discovery Menu offers a whole raft of ingredients including 36 month aged parmesan, pumpkin praline and sea purslane oscietra and Keta caviar. It is priced at £125 per person sorrelrestaurant.co.uk | 01306 88914

Latymer by Steve Smith at Pennyhill Park

This Michelin-starred eatery is housed in a cosy corner of Bagshot’s Penyhill Park, a hotel and spa that serves up a sumptuous slice of unabashed Surrey luxury. The restaurant setting is intimate, benefiting from aged beam ceilings and peppered with plush tones. Alongside its Michelin star (awarded in 2021), it also boasts an impressive four AA rosettes, immediately indicating the quality of the establishment. Under the guiding hand of celebrated chef Steve Smith, the Latymer serves modern British food that is both inventive and gratifying, focusing on seasonal produce and fullsome flavours.

Details: The Sample Discovery Menu – a three-hour tasting experience which costs £130 per person and features Brixham crab salad, Herdwick Lamb and Yorkshire rhubarb. It can be paired with six glasses of wine for a further £95 per person.

The Clock House, Ripley

Once again blending elegant understatement with exemplary cuisine, The Clock House has held its Michelin star since it opened in 2004 as the aforementioned Drake’s.

Today, the 30-seat restaurant is overseen by managing director Serena Drake with Luke Spier - who cut his culinary teeth alongside Gordon Ramsay at various London establishment, including The Savoy - as head chef.

Dishes are very much flavour-led which leads to some interesting combinations that captivate the palate. The Clock House prides itself on its commitment to sourcing food as locally as possible with around 95% of all ingredients coming from the UK. It also boasts a fine vegetarian tasting menu that comprises Jerusalem artichoke with braised spelt and quails egg and Winter squash, accompanied with whey, fig leaf and pumpkin seed.

Details: Alongside the vegetarian menu there is a lunch option, as well as a five course variation, promising such mouth-watering delicacies as 85% Pump Street chocolate served with buckwheat and Scotch caramel. Prices start at £75 per person, with an additional Great British cheese board for £18.

Combining the considerable talents of Matt Larcombe, former head chef of The Crown at Bray, and Simon King of Igniting Hospitality, The Victoria offers some fantastic food that can be enjoyed in a friendly pub setting. While the restaurant opened its doors just over 12 months ago, its signature Mushroom Parfait (which takes 36 hours to prepare) has already become the stuff of legend.

Alongside these three ‘starred’ institutions, another five restaurants have been deemed worthy of inclusion in prestigious Michelin Guide, which has been the gourmand’s bible since it was first published in 1900.

Dastaan, Epsom

Founded by friends Sanjay and Nand, this relaxed restaurant serves some of the finest Indian food for miles around. According to the Michelin Guide: “portions are generous, spicing is superb and there are many layers of flavour”. What more could you want?

Meanwhile, grown-ups can sample starters that include carpaccio of candy beetroot and pear, alongside mains of glazed Scottish salmon and roasted pheasant.

Again situated in historic premises, it offers a relaxed, rustic vibe that enables you to fully enjoy the delights placed before you. Diners are welcome for casual lunches, as well as more formal dining with dishes that include: braised beef brisket accompanied by watercress mayonnaise, onion ring and pumpkin veloute; and cauliflower fritters served with masala sauce, lemon and coriander couscous and raita. ripleyanchor.co.uk | 01483 211 866

The Bailiwick, Egham

Serving classic British cuisine, this pretty pub in Englefield Green just scrapes into Surrey, despite being on the edge of Windsor Great Park. While lunch offers a great selection of traditional fare, the evening’s a la carte menu is well-worth sticking around for. Offering the best from ‘nature’s larder’, produce is sourced from local fishmongers, butchers and gamekeepers. Starters include pig trotter terrine, while mains boast Isle of Gigha Halibut and 48-day aged Boston chop steak.
