Volunteer spirit to shine during Day of Caring Gearing up for a Day of Caring, the Estevan United Way prepares to, once again, reach out to the community and give back.

The Day of Caring is all about lending a hand to help someone do something that they couldn’t do themselves. While the local United Way organizes volunteers to do specific projects, Roberta DeRosier, United Way of Estevan vice-president, who sits on the Day of Caring committee, said the day isn’t just about a concentrated and concerted effort.

“We want to emphasize that for people to lend a hand, they can just look around and find someone (like a neighbour) and help.”

It is the act that is more important than signing up to be a volunteer for United Way. However, DeRosier noted they have more than enough work to go around.

Earlier this week there were

16 projects the group had lined up for the Day of Caring on June 15, and about 70 volunteers, with more expected to come in over the week.

Projects include work to be done for Estevan Diversified Services, the Estevan Day Care, Creighton Lodge and the Nursing Home. They are also going to making a flower bed for the long-term care unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

DeRosier said these places have their own staff, but that staff’s primary job is to deal with the people under their care, and they don’t have the time to do these jobs themselves.

The projects range from landscaping work to small tasks at individual residences, like raking or window washing. Most of those projects are done for seniors who may otherwise have a difficult time with that work.

This is DeRosier ’s third year as part of the Day of Caring, and for her, seeing the people on the receiving end of the volunteers’ toil is what she loves the most about the day.

“For me personally, it’s seeing the person who wouldn’t ordinarily have someone to help them. I love seeing that.”

She also pointed out that while this day is great for those who are helped out, it is also a great experience for the volunteers.

Working together for the day, it’s a great time for people to gain new friendships and connections.

“We want to build communities,” said DeRosier. “This is not all about the job and the work, but it’s about about building the community.”

The morning shift begins at 9 o’clock on Wednesday and will go until noon. The United Way

will then hold a lunch for all the volunteers before heading back to work in the afternoon.

DeRosier is happy with the way the event has grown over the years. That growth is due in part to local businesses who will help out. She said people who volunteer are taking the day off work, but there are businesses that pay them for that day, encouraging people to help out and get involved. She noted they get many return volunteers from year-to-year, as well as many new faces.

With the happy support of many businesses, DeRosier said, “All of

Volunteers will be informed where they need to be on the morning of the event. Each location will have a project manager who knows the details of what needs to be done, and the committee is making sure all the required equipment is ready at each site.

There will always be things to do, as she noted there are never enough volunteers, and if they do have more than they anticipated, it just means they can “go that extra step” and do something more than what the project requires.

Big plans for Literacy Group summer student Ilona Bastiaansen is the newest addition to the Estevan and Area Literacy Group and is looking to make a difference in the Estevan community. This summer, thanks to funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program and the Community Initiatives Fund, Bastiaansen will be filling the position of summer literacy assistant.

“I’m so happy we have Ilona,” said Kathryn Roberton, the literacy co-ordinator for the literacy group. “She’s very useful and very helpful.”

Bastiaansen, who moved to Canada from the Netherlands 10 years ago, said that her experience learning English is part of what led her to apply for the job.

“I’d like to be able to give back, though indirectly, to those who helped me when I came here,” she said.

Bastiaansen’s family moved to Estevan two years ago and having returned home from the University of Saskatchewan where she is a business student, Bastiaansen was looking for summer employment when

she noticed an online advertisement for the summer literacy assistant position.

Bastiaansen said she found the literacy group to have a good cause and wanted to get involved.

Throughout the summer Bastiaansen, will be helping to conduct a needs assessment in work places in the area, in an effort to identify shortcomings in adult and family literacy.

Literacy, explained Roberton and Bastiaansen, includes necessary skills in the modern world, including actions like using scissors correctly.

In addition to the needs assessment, Bastiaansen will be helping with the literacy group’s programs, including Nature Smarts, Come Read With Me, and Talk Time. Nature Smarts gives children and parents the opportunity to do crafts and activities, and each family leaves with a craft kit and a new book. Come Read With Me is a community and school orientated program that helps teach parents how to read to their kids, and each family leaves the weekly sessions with a new book. Talk Time is an English conversation circle that allows children learning English the chance to work on their vocabulary and conversation skills.

Bastiaansen said she most enjoys working with the youths involved in the programs provided by the literacy group.

“I like working with people who need it. This job is always fun and constantly changing,” said Bastiaansen.

Twitter still no place to find real news If you were checking the news early on Monday, you may have heard reports that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had to be rushed to hospital after choking on his breakfast.

Those reports were false but brought to light just what a hacker can do to spread misinformation from a once credible source. The false message appeared on a Conservative MP’s Twitter page and the Conservative Party’s website, which also fell victim to the jokesters.

I first saw the report as the top story on the Globe and Mail’s website.

They were just reporting that there was a false story, and if no other legitimate news source was reporting that the story was true, I’m not sure why it should have been believed in the first place.

It showed up on Twitter, which I’ve noted in the past, is unfortunately becoming a place to find quotes and attribution more and more for journalists. What this false story shows is that mainstream media is as relevant today as ever. Sure blogs and social media have created a way for “ama-

teur” journalism to be far-reaching, but it lacks legitimacy, despite often being correct.

There is no accountability for a private online writer to be accurate or factual.

People drag on mainstream media for editorializing all of its content and reporting on key issues in a slanted way, but journalists still strive to give a balanced factual account of the story. Because there is a small number of corporations that own the vast majority of media outlets, there is, at times, a perception that each branch of the corporate tree answers directly to one person in charge of the entire conglomerate.

That isn’t the case, and even individual publishers don’t have a monopoly inside their newsrooms. I certainly haven’t come across any instances of clashing at the Mercury yet, but I have experienced a publisher who had a problem with the story on the front page.

I was in college. The dean of the communications department was our publisher. We had a front page story about campus security after a gunman, who was enrolled at the college, forced an evacuation of the school. No shots were fired.

That was our lead story on the front page, which included two or three stories on the bottom that turned into the paper. Our dean/publisher had a problem with a “good news” story about the college that was running small at the bottom and turned into the paper, feeling there was a clash of subject matter. He wanted the feel good story to run big, while the security story would get relegated to a later spot in the paper.

There was a butting of heads among the editorial students, along with the journalism program’s teachers and the publisher. We won and ran what we wanted, moving the good news story to a later page in order to appease the problem of clashing stories.

Those confrontations do happen, but it isn’t just one person dictating what is printed and what isn’t. There is a discussion and I like to think that most of the time, those who really care about the news get their way.

The problem of perceived bias often comes from commentary, not news, and we still have a responsibility to maintain the public’s trust because if we aren’t credible, it’s tough to find credibility online.

The SYA Program enables high school students to explore career opportunities in the skilled trades by encouraging interest and facilitating hands-on experience. Student participation remains high. Currently there are approximately 250 schools registered in the SYA Program, with over 4,600 students participating. Since the program’s inception, more than 8,500 students in Grades 10-12 have registered and over 2,500 have completed the program and received certificates. Of these, over

300 have registered as Saskatchewan apprentices. To date, seven SYA participants have achieved journeyperson status.

The SATCC selects the schools that receive the SYA Industry Scholarship and the school selects the scholarship winner. In order to receive the award,

the graduate must complete one level of apprenticeship or complete one year of post-secondary training in a designated skilled trade.

The Estevan Art Gallery is hosting week-long art camps in June, July and August. June and July camps are already full so register quick for the final one of the summer, beginning Aug. 15.

Camps give opportunity to show one’s inner artist Everyone has an artistic side, and it isn’t necessary being able to draw.

Karly Millions, educator at the Estevan Art Gallery, is readying the facility for another slate of art camps this year. While the gallery has given art camps in the past, these will be the first directed by Millions.

She said the participants at the camp, children aged seven-and-up will learn about the “technical side” of art and won’t just be making crafts.

“Each camp, and each day, has a different focus,” she said. The capacity in each camp is kept small, to about 10 children, allowing for lots of one-on-one instruction.

Millions said they are also running the camps as an Art Star program, where prizes will be given each day to students who display not only good art, but also have a positive attitude, are respectful of others’ work or are able to work through problems they encounter.

“Some kids say ‘I can’t draw.’Well anyone can make art if they try and do their best. Maybe it didn’t turn out the way you thought, but still it could be a good piece of art. The final product is not always the best judge of (quality).”

The students at the camps will have an opportunity to see some of the exhibits at the gallery. A lot

of the lessons will be based on what art pieces they see in the gallery.

Millions said being able to see a piece of abstract art in person, as opposed to an image of the piece, is a good way for the children to learn.

After they see the art, they can go back and talk about colour and lines, and then the students can get right into working on their own pieces.

“We want to tie in to what the kids are looking at, looking at how abstract art comes together.”

She will also be talking with the students about some art history, and she has a couple of university summer students who will be able to help out. First and

foremost though the camp attendees will be able to get their hands dirty, as Millions’ approach will allow them to spend most of their time at the camp working on their own original pieces.

The projects registrants will do throughout the camps will take them on a journey through art history, working with all kinds of media and styles, including recycled art, which requires the artist to create a piece using only recycled objects.

The art camps are funded partially through the City’s leisure services community programming initiative. The rest comes from fundraising by the Art Gallery. Funds raised from

the chili cook-off this Saturday will partly go towards the necessary supplies for the camps.

Millions said she hopes the camps will continue as an annual initiative. The fundraisers are important in keeping the costs down for the families paying for the camps. The materials can get expensive, but Millions noted that the children who take part will get to work with materials they probably haven’t used before.

She said they might do a photography lesson and the students would get to use the Art Gallery’s professional camera, or they may just be using a material their families probably wouldn’t

have in the house, like clay or charcoal.

Keeping low registration rates also means the camps don’t run based on how many registrants there are. When registration isn’t paying for supplies it means the camps will run even if there are only four or five children registered.

The Art Gallery is hosting three camps this summer beginning June 13. The June and July camps are both full, but there is still room in the August camp. Because of how popular the camps seem to be, Millions said she may be looking to expand them next year to allow more available spaces or by holding more camps.

Get Ready For Make graduation memories bright After long hours studying and writing exams, your graduate’s big day is finally approaching and like all proud parents (and grandparents), you’ll want to capture every minute of the cap and gown ceremony. Lighting can be hard to regulate when taking pictures indoors so if you’re far away from your subject, turn the flash off (most digital camera flashes are only good up to a distance of 8–15 feet and result in an image that’s too dark). Another tip for tip–top shots: look for a digital camera with a hinged pop–up flash like the Lumix DMC–GF2 which allows you to point the flash towards the ceiling to create a “bounce flash”, which softly fills in the lighting when taking close shots like portraits, rather than creating an over–exposed image.

What to wear underneath grad gowns Each school and ageold tradition will dictate what color cap and gown a graduate will wear, but it is often up to the graduate when it comes to what is underneath the gown. There are some choices graduates can make to be comfortable and classy.

Graduation ceremonies generally take place in the summer, when it can be quite warm. Combine this with a

polyester graduation gown and several hundred people squeezed into a school auditorium and it can be quite hot. Choices in clothing under the gown should be made with climate in mind.

In general, it is in good taste for women to wear a conservative dress or a skirted suit. A collared blouse can look tailored beneath the collarless neck of the graduation gown and

won’t leave a gap of open skin between the graduation gown and the issued graduation hood. If a dress or skirt is worn, pantyhose finish the look because the graduation gown ends at the calf and a portion of the legs will be showing. Students should avoid shoes that are loose or have high heels. They can present a tripping hazard when traversing the auditorium, football field or scaling steps when receiving the diploma.

Wear comfortable shoes that fit well and practice walking

in them to ensure they are practical.

Some students choose to be unique by wearing flip-flops and shorts. While this certainly can make a statement, it sets the wrong mood for the event and will probably be frowned upon by administrators. Wait until later to change into party garb and enjoy the last summer vacation before college or a career.

Students should be well-groomed, shaven (for men) and with simple hairstyles. This will make it easier for the mortarboard to stay in place.

Don’t Forget Those A/C Filters Q: Recently when visiting an elderly relative, I noticed how warm her house was and asked if her air conditioner was working OK. She said yes, that the unit had been repaired last summer, but just never seemed to cool things down very well. I asked if I could take a look at it.

The outdoor unit looked to be working just fine, except that it had been running nonstop throughout my visit. When I went back inside the house I found a potential problem.

When I looked up at the air intake filter, which was set in the hallway ceiling, I saw a thick coat of dust.

I immediately grabbed a stepladder and opened the filter panel, and was rewarded with a shower of dust. The air filter was encrusted with thick dust. It had not been changed in at

least a year, maybe longer!

I shut off the air conditioner at the thermostat, removed the old filter, dusted and cleaned the intake area and filter panel as best I could, and put in a new filter. Then I turned the air conditioning back on.

The result? My relative called me a few hours later and asked me to stop by and turn the temperature up a few degrees, as she was too cold. I got the number of the repair service that fixed her outside unit so I could blister their ears about not also checking and changing the air filters as part of the service, and to schedule a checkup of her air-conditioning system. I sent this to you in hopes that readers will remember to change the filters on their air conditioning units regularly -- it can make a huge difference in a home’s temperature. - Jim T., via e-mail

A: Thanks for the excellent reminder, Jim! Readers, air conditioning or heating unit filters should be changed every month during the busiest cooling or heating seasons (winter and summer) if the unit runs every day, and once every two months during off-peak seasons when the units don’t run as much.

On another note, kudos for checking in on your relative. Especially in the hottest part of summer, it’s important to stop by or call older relatives or neighbors and make sure they’re doing all right.

HOME TIP: A routine A/C maintenance by a certified technician includes a check of the condenser, filters, electrical components and refrigerant level, as well as cleaning the coils, oiling the motor (if necessary) and calibrating the thermostat.

2 large ripe peaches, each cut in half and pits discarded 1/2 pint raspberries 1 tablespoon sugar 1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream

The BAD (Bikers Against Diabetes) Cru motorcycle rodeo on Saturday attracted over 100 bikers and dozens of contestants for the various fun events that were scheduled during the Saturday afternoon meet that was staged in the grassed area next to Wal-Mart .

The ring toss was another favourite event during the BAD Cru rodeo Saturday afternoon. The motorcycle driver attempted to get as close to the pylon as he could while the passenger tossed a ring on to it. Second round eliminations involved an increasingly more difficult pylon set up to test the skills of both the driver and the ring tosser. All profits from the afternoon event were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association to help research and educate the public about this disease.

One particular biker event that attracted a lot of attention was the slow race, which meant that the bike rider who was last across the finish line was the winner.

Field / Plant Operator Lampman Area ARC Resources Ltd., a Calgary based conventional Oil and Gas Company, is looking for a self motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as a Field/Plant Operator in the Lampman Area.

The successful incumbent would be required to live in or relocate to within 50kms of Lampman.

The Operator will report to the Production Foreman and will be responsible for the day to day operations of a number of pumping oil wells and an oil process facility. Duties will include (but are not limited to) daily production reporting, inspection of wells and facility, routine maintenance and servicing requirements, optimization of producing wells, and ensure all Corporate Safety and Environmental policies are adhered to at all times.

Good communication, trouble shooting and problem solving skills are required for this position.

Experience with computer applications and Production Data capture system would be an asset. The individual must also possess a valid driver’s license.

An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and directlyrelated experience may be considered. The incumbent would be a positive team player with a strong work ethic. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are also key attributes.
