Publications merge to create something fresh Weekend readers in the southeast will be treated to a new newspaper

An amalgamation is combining the best of two newspapers and creating a significant product to regional readers. Prairie Newspaper Group, an arm of Glacier Media, is merging Lifestyles and the Southeast Trader Express under one distinct banner, called Southeast Lifestyles. It will be published and distributed every weekend to accommodate readers and advertisers with a guaranteed circulation in excess of 7,200 copies weekly. The new publication will reflect the ongoing positive news, humaninterest stories and feature articles found in Lifestyles, and the visualheavy, community contributed content from the Southeast Trader Express. “Southeast Lifestyles is going to be a high quality newspaper,” said Lifestyles editor David Willberg.

“We are bringing the best attributes of both papers into this new publication.” The redesign has been spearheaded by production team leader Trinda Jocelyn, and includes a perfect balance of familiarity and new ideas. Familiarity, however, remains

sentative team that the community has come to rely on, will be there for them and the advertising, flyers and promotion content will be in one convenient weekend package,” said Cindy Beaulieu, the Mercury and Southeast Lifestyles’ sales manager. “The new look, we trust, will be

a high priority, especially for the sales team that has represented both publications. “Clients can be assured of continuity. Our advertising sales repre-

welcomed and, of course, we will seek feedback, since this is your community newspaper.” The first issue of Southeast Lifestyles will be published on Sept. 18.

Change for the better, not as a last resort Enduring change in our lives can be difficult. The uncertainty, the waiting game we play to simply know the results of that change, and, of course, the occasional failure of that change to deliver positive results. Despite these obstacles, change can be oh-so beautiful when it ultimately betters our society and ourselves. Oftentimes, a problem is targeted, and before it balloons into something more damaging, a solution or solutions are created to stomp out the problem, or at the very least, put it into a recessive state. Sometimes, it’s a mere inconvenience that is targeted by a brilliant mind, which then creates a solution that saves us time and money. There are some incredible people in our world who do this sort of very thing on a daily basis. Scientists, engineers, eccentrics in their garage who build functioning bikes entirely out of cardboard (that’s a real thing by the way, and it’s brilliant), they all contribute greatly to this goal.

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling What’s not beautiful is the way shifts in thinking and perception have, for the longest time, been initially instigated by a larger population, and sometimes by people in power, through tragedy. Innocent people being gunned down, rising sea levels, children washing up on shore; only then do we suddenly realize something is wrong, and for a fleeting moment, raise our voices until we decide we’ve had enough and then go back to what sort of worked before. Canada’s longest-ever federal election campaign is creating a lot of important discussions. Conversations surrounding the First Nations community, refugees, climate change

and women’s rights are at the forefront of a lot of debates. It still feels like a lot of these discussions are stemming from tragedies or just the overwhelming number of people demanding that these issues be brought to the table, because they still take a backseat to the number one topic, which continues to be the economy, another important issue without a doubt, but I feel it’s one that consumes too much of our attention. So much of the economy hinges on elements that are out of our control. Why not place greater attention on things we can have a direct impact on right away? But once the election is over, I’m curious to see how many of those aforementioned topics will continue

to be emphasized. This knee-jerk reaction to significant occurrences in our world is highly evident on social media, where a tragedy that’s often a result of an ongoing problem that suddenly hits its peak, suddenly causes waves of responses and comments from millions around the world who chime about an issue and begin pointing fingers. Not every person falls under this category, and in fact, even those who do are not doing anything bad. At the very least, a conversation is created and people are becoming informed, which then equates to a lot of those people following the situation that drew them into the conversation in the first place. It seems that’s happening more than before. Tweeters would get in, say something, then leave and not actually learn anything; but there seems to be an elevated sense of urgency these days within our country, and around the world, causing people to remain informed and learn much

more on their own time. A crumbling economy, a lasting drop in the price of natural resources, extreme weather conditions resulting from climate change, the ongoing mistreatment of minority groups and a terrorist organization that’s beheading innocent people on a frequent basis will do that. It’s taken a long time, but things like climate change, our patriarchal society, the underlying racism that festers thousands of communities, and many other previously shrouded in doubt topics are now on the tip of the tongue for many people. This is where it gets interesting. When will lasting change take place that will finally reverse a lot of these problems? Not right away, but I look forward to the process, and I look forward to leaders keeping promises and realizing that the people they serve care about what’s happening around them. Because if they don’t, well, that I don’t want to think about right now.

Strip-till making waves in agriculture When I was growing up on a small mixed farm a half century ago summerfallow was the norm when it came to crop planning. Farmers just naturally left one-third to onehalf of their crop able land fallow each year. It was seen as a way to rest the land and as a way to better control weeds, as they would be turned under by a cultivator two or three times from spring through fall. In an era before farm chemicals were created for every problem it was a way to deal with the peskiest of weeds, and it did seem to give the follow-up crop a yield boost. It was, however, not a system that did anything to prevent water and wind erosion. A summerfallow field was easily blown around on hot, windy summer days, and heavy rains made small channels, which carried topsoil to ditches, creeks and rivers. So it was no surprise that farmers, when given the tools to eliminate summerfallow, they quickly adopted those tools. The emergence of better chemical control of weeds, and equipment, which could plant seeds through stubble and trash cover, revolutionized farming. They brought more acres into annual production, and lessened the potential impact of wind and water erosion situations. But now a new option seems to be emerging which crosses the old system and the new. Strip-till is something I admit was unknown to me until very recently, but it does intrigue in

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist the sense that it is a system, which seems to draw on the strengths of both zee till and the earlier idea of summerfallow. With strip-till narrow pathways where seeds are planted are worked with tillage equipment designed to create a seedbed free of weeds and trash. The area is black soil which in the days of summerfallow was seen as ideal as the black colour drew heat from the sun encouraging early seed emergence. The issue of emergence has always been one of concern in terms of zero till as soil temperatures do not rise as quickly or as uniformly because of the trash cover. Strip-till leaves the strips between crop rows alone. The stubble and trash cover between rows is left alone to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and reduce erosion from wind and water, which has always been the strengths of zero till systems. But would such a system enhance yields, or reduce costs to make a switch viable? According to a recent article at www. producer.com “that’s what University of Min-

nesota researcher Fabian Fernandez hoped to learn in 2007 when he embarked on a five-year study of strip-till versus no-till. The research was conducted on salty, clay loam soil and his findings are available in the recently published Agronomy Journal.” Interesting organic matter went up in the strip-till plots. “As you produce a slightly higher yield in strip-till, you begin gradually to produce more bio-mass, which is returned to the soil as organic matter,” said Fernandez in the article. “Organic matter helps boost yield. So the more organic matter you incorporate into the strips, the more your yield increases.” The strip-till plots had a slight yield benefit in the early years, which, over time, snowballed into significant organic matter numbers, continued the article. The system does require specialized equipment, but so does zero till, that equipment developing as farmers showed a willingness to adopt it. And there some concerns, the pathways on hilly land can create automatic passageways for water run-off and this erosion. But the increase in biomass and yields do suggest that strip-till might have a future for farmers with additional research. And so how we best farm continues to evolve as we gain knowledge through scientific research.

RCMP warn of online scammer Estevan RCMP are asking all residents in the southeast to be vigilant and to contact them if they receive a call from any company claiming they have detected viruses on your computer. A recent release from the Estevan RCMP is warning the public that a number of people have been contacted by a supposed major computer company and were told that their computers had been infected. On Sept. 5, one victim received such a phone call, and was told that for a $300 fee, they could access their computer remotely to fix the problem. The victim paid the fee using a credit card and following the instructions of the scammer, granted them remote access. The scammer later called back saying something didn’t work, and that they would

issue a refund if the victim provided them access to their bank account. The victim provided enough bank account information for the scammer to control the victim’s online bank

RCMP Const. Chad Mehl. “In other instances, they use fear tactics. They’ll tell you that the computer virus they’re warning you about is going to permanently damage your computer.” Mehl said the local RCMP detachment receives calls regarding scammers semi-regularly, but unfortunately, tracking suspects is extremely difficult due to the scope of their criminal activity, which is often connected to organized crime around the world. He encourages anyone who receives a call to follow his or her instincts. “With almost every case like this, the victim has stated they had a ‘gutfeeling.’ We encourage the public to trust that feeling,” Mehl said. The release asked anyone who has lost money,

Awareness raised for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder On Sept. 9, the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) provided $160,000 to agencies that promote awareness and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD describes a range of life-long disabilities that result from exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. Ac-

Mon

cording to the Public Health Agency of Canada, FASD is the leading known cause of preventable developmental disabilities “FASD not only impacts an individual but it also affects families and communities,” Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said in a release. “This funding will

help raise awareness about the harm of consuming alcohol during pregnancy, while also supporting families that face the difficulties associated with FASD.” The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute (SPI) received $80,000. The money will support the launch and distribution of its new FASD

prevention campaign at the end of September. The program is aimed at fathers, and the funding will also support three intensive trainings and the start of a provincial community collaborative in FASD Prevention. The FASD Support Network of Saskatchewan received $80,000 to sup-

port its continued efforts to promote awareness of FASD through workshops in post-secondary institutions with students who may deal with FASD in their future careers.
The funding will also support an initiative to create a “real stories book” consisting of short testimonials and experiences from

caregivers and people living with FASD while also supporting the continued delivery of its publication Living with FASD.
Members of this group will have more in-depth, evidence-based knowledge of FASD to share with their communities. FASD Day was on Sept. 9.

Fentanyl being accessed through prescriptions By Sam Macdonald smacdonald@estevanmercury.ca

A powerful synthetic painkiller is becoming popular for recreational use in Saskatchewan, and more people are gaining access to it through diverted prescriptions. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic painkiller, comes in a variety of forms, is becoming increasingly popular, despite the danger it entails when consumed without medical supervision. Fentanyl comes in an assortment of forms, including pills and powders, and is often mixed with other drugs like oxycodone, ketamine or MDMA (an acryonym for its chemical name 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), making it all the more dangerous in combination with other substances. Janice Giroux, vice president of Sun Country Health Region noted fentanyl is an extremely powerful drug, which makes it easy to overdose on.

“If you’re taking a drug for other than for the reason you’re supposed to be taking it, then it’s a concern,” said Giroux. “People need to make sure they use the right medication for the right reason. I’m not sure what’s on our streets, but we don’t want it to be a drug that’s abused in the Sun Country Health Region.” Initially, the trend of fentanyl consumption began in B.C., where it spread to Alberta over the last few years. Its presence continued eastward into Saskatchewan. Shahab noted fentanyl abuse has also spread into Manitoba and Ontario. “The main message of all this is, don’t take any drugs without a prescription, especially if you don’t know what’s in them,” said Dr. Saqib Shahab, medical officer with the Ministry of Health. Shahab also cautioned anyone who might be experiencing a potential overdose situation not to hesitate to contact emergency services. “If you see someone who may

have overdosed, you really have to call 911 and get help. You shouldn’t worry about ‘getting into trouble’ or something like that,” said Shahab. “There is an antidote for fentanyl called naloxone, something that EMS and ERs both have.” Signs of an overdose to watch out for include shallow breathing, drowsiness, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, small pupils, seizures, and bluish or cold and clammy skin. According to the Office of the Chief Coroner of Saskatchewan, almost one fifth of the 45 drug overdose deaths involving opioids in the province involved fentanyl. “Pharmacists and doctors want to make sure fentanyl is off the streets,” said Giroux. “We know that in Canada it’s been a problem. There are people talking about it, though. That’s what’s important – being aware.” There have been 10 deaths so far this year relating to fentanyl overdoses.

Movies of Yore - 1993 Last Action Hero: The movie is, surprisingly, quite boring for a Schwarzenegger movie, and even the endless amount of cameos (seriously, there’s a red carpet’s worth of them) aren’t able to make things exciting. The movie is a clear spoof on action movies, and though the concept itself is interesting, the story just falls flat.

The Fugitive: Based on the 1960s TV series, Harrison Ford and a star-studded cast take advantage of a great script and deliver an incredibly suspenseful and action-packed film. It holds up incredibly well, even today.

Super Mario Bros: Based on the popular video game characters, Super Mario Bros is a charming and imaginative trip through a visually distinct world that will resonate with fans of the video game … in all seriousness, this movie is one of the most interesting disasters in cinema history and has about as much to do with its source material as sharp metal objects do with power outlets.
