Sacred Heart students dabble in the sciences The fair didn’t come with a parade but instead explored the wondrous world of science.

The Sacred Heart/ Sacre´ Coeur School science fair was in prime focus in the gymnasium

on April 21. The annual gala had nearly 30 displays from three classes, which were open to the public.

People filtered into the school, perusing the projects and were able to vote for their favourite projects

The winners won’t be announced until after the Easter break.

Some projects were explosive, while others forced participants to explore the senses to a deeper degree.

Sacred Heart staff finds the students are engaged and excited about participating in the science projects each year. The fair is a chance for students to open their minds and

do a little exploration and discovery on their own.

With the people looking at each project, students fielded questions about what they were doing, and in cases where demonstration was possible, would go through the experiment. Sometimes that meant the observer would act as the guinea pig for the experiment, but in the instance of a taste-testing project, that wasn’t at all a bad thing.

course. That was a summer job, and then in September 2009, I got a job at the Camrose Flight Centre just outside of Edmonton.

One-on-one with Jordan Baker Almas Choudhary is the new flight instructor at Southeast Aviation Services. The 25-yearold moved to Estevan in March to begin work at the position. Choudhary is from Sialkot, Pakistan originally and moved to London, England before his family immigrated to Calgary where he grew up.

Why did you find flying to be something you wanted to do?

I’ve always kind of had a passion for it, since I was small flying paper airplanes. I didn’t really get started until I was in air cadets. My dad put me in air cadets at that’s when it really took off that is something I really wanted to do, to one day become an airline pilot, and right now I’m just working my way up.

When did you start in air cadets?

At 13. Then when I was 17, I got my glider-pilot licence, and then I got my private-pilot licence the next year. Then I took a couple of years to get my marks up and get into my program.

That was a university program you were enrolled in?

Yeah, it’s a four-year degree. It’s basically a bachelor of business administration in aviation.

The flying school was based out of Abbotsford, B.C. You’ve flown gliders.

What is the difference between flying them and flying a plane?

Well, a glider is just an airplane without an engine, and there are different methods of getting the glider up. One is to fly behind another airplane with a tow rope. It’s called towing. In the west, they use airplanes.

When were you behind the controls for the first time?

In air cadets you get the opportunity to take control, in something called a familiarization flight. It’s about once or twice a year.

You go out in a Cessna, or a single-engine airplane, and you take the controls a little bit. There are different levels (from one to six), and as you get higher up in your levels to four or five, you do more cross-country planning and navigating. I

You got into gliders first. Is that a path most pilots take?

You can take different paths. You can start off doing your private-pilot licence. The glider, it’s a path. It’s a beginning. You don’t have to worry about the engine, but you have to worry about getting back on the ground.

So you don’t want to go too far out so that you do an on-field landing. So re a l l y a glider is a forced landing every time, so you have to make sure you get back (to a runway).

There’s a lot of fun with a glider. An average flight is about 12 minutes, so it’s pretty short. If you get into thermals, or convective rising air, then you get to be up there ... I think my longest flight was about 45 minutes.

Do you remember much about your first time taking the controls?

Oh yeah, I mean the first time I got into an airplane, it was a pretty good feeling. That rush when you’re up in the air, and you can pretty much see everything. The controls are a little different (than a glider). But the first time you fly by yourself, when I was going for my privatepilot licence, I was like holy crap, I’m actually up here by myself. It was a very good feeling.

Were you teaching before coming here?

Yeah. I graduated in June 2009 with my degree.

I was fortunate enough that the place I did my privatepilot licence and the air cadets, five years later I went back there and started teaching. Just for that summer program for the air cadets. it was a seven-week

High time to enjoy the outdoors The weather appears to have turned for the long term.

I hope nobody claims I have jinxed or cursed or doomed the city of Estevan to six more weeks of winter by saying that. I think the above freezing temperatures are here to stay.

That means there are so many more things to do outdoors, or at least many more things that one can enjoyably participate in outdoors.

When done work for the day and the NHL playoffs are between series, it’s great to finally spend some quality time outside. When it’s cold the outdoors are a means to an end; nowadays the sunny fresh air is the be all and end all.

The tranquil moments as the sun goes down and the stars come up are some of my favourite to head out for a quiet walk.

On empty sidewalks, with my iPod tuned to something particularly chill like Bon Iver or Elliott Smith, it’s just a perfect time to relax and let whatever stress the day may have caused to melt away into the surrounding darkness.

That’s what being outside is for me: relieving any tensions that may have worked their way into my system.

Going for a run is great, particularly after the sun goes down, and it’s a little cooler. A good run always silences the mind. Exercise really is a great stress reliever and I find it much more rewarding to head throughout the city streets than to be cooped up on a treadmill.

Canada for physical activity levels. The country however, received a spectacular A- for proximity and availability of resources in the community. That tells me there is ample opportunity, but little will.

The report found that, while activity levels in youngsters is very low, there is a dramatic drop off when Canadians enter their teen years.

I don’t expect a child would go for a run the way I would.

Children don’t really need to exercise in a structured way, they can just play. Once people stop just playing, when they enter teenage years, there needs to be more done to improve people’s tendency to exercise in a structured way.

It’s the days like we’ve been having recently that really beckon us to be outside and more active. It feels great to answer that call. That is a feeling everyone should have. We should want to go outside whenever we get the opportunity.

With all the hormones boiling inside teenagers, somebody should tell them that a little exercise goes a long way in dealing with the everyday stresses of life.

Bike rides. Rollerblading. Walking the dog. There is an activity for everybody. Whatever you do, it’s great to finally get back outside.

1/2 cup fat-free sour cream Sugar substitute to equal 1/2 cup, suitable for baking 1 cup mashed ripe bananas 1 egg or equivalent in

Candidates state their case in Estevan With the federal election just days away, the four men vying to represent the Souris-Moose Mountain Constituency made one of their final pitches to voters Tuesday.

The candidates gathered at the Legion Hall for the annual Candidates’ Forum organized by the Estevan Board of Tourism Trade and Commerce.

The evening was largely without fireworks as the candidates didn’t deviate from their respective party’s stance on the various issues, particularly in the opening comments portion of the forum.

Up first was NDP hopeful Allan Arthur who might be the busiest of the four candidates. Not only is Arthur running in the election, he is also scheduled to be married Saturday. The former mayor of Qu’Appelle said Ottawa is broken and needs to be fixed and the only man up to that task is NDP leader Jack Layton.

“We are looking for change, no more of the

Gerald Borrowman status quo,” said Arthur.

“You want a leader you can trust in there and Jack Layton is a leader you can trust most definitely.”

Incumbent Conservative candidate Ed Komarnicki also stuck to the party script, immediately touting the last budget handed down by the Conservative government and claiming that the NDP and Liberals have forced Canada into a needless election because of their thirst for power.

“I think when you look at where the par-

“The Green Party has a fully developed platform that has been run through the parliamentary budget office and it sits on our website all year long,” Deptuck said. “It takes care of the economy, the environment, people’s health and the well being of all Canadians.”

Liberal Gerald Borrowman was last to the microphone but the first to take some hard shots at Komarnicki’s Conservative Party. Borrowman responded to the MP’s comments about a power grab by informing the audience that the election

was called because of Prime Minister Stephen Harper ’s contempt for Parliament and the democratic process.

“It is about how we are governed and our democratic form of government under a constitutional monarchy,” Borrowman said. “For the very first time in the history of the British Parliamentary model, a prime minister and his government have been held in contempt, that is the reason we are here and discussing a change of government.”

Participants at last year’s Coal Country Run/Walk head out from the starting line to return either five or 10 kilometres later at the race end. The fundraiser has raised $13,000 in the first three years for the Bienfait Memorial Arena. This year’s race is May 14.

Fun run is a day at the races Lace up those new running shoes and throw on your gym shorts, there is a race to run.

The Coal Country Run/ Walk is a great way to kick off an active summer by participating in either the five-kilometre or 10-km run.

There is even a kids mini mile that will get them flying to the finish line.

Debby Knight, race organizer, is happy to say that the race, now entering its fourth annual year, is

growing and they already have more registrants for this year’s edition than they had last year. There are still a few weeks to go before the May 14 race.

One perk to pushing your body through the kilometres of roadside is the great view.

“It’s a beautiful road along the Roche Percee valley,” said Knight. “You can run, you can walk it.

Getting out in any way is a good thing.”

The race will be following a slightly different route this year that will take a onekm loop around the village of Roche Percee. For those running the five-km race, this change will eliminate a particularly challenging hill.

“We added the loop so the 5Kers don’t have to go up that hill. It’s a tough hill.”

Knight added that for those who do conquer the hill, they do have bragging rights, but each of the racers in the five-kilometre she has

talked to has been very happy with the change to the course.

She got the idea to start the local fundraiser after attending a race in Regina.

“I thought, ‘Why not do it here?’ Now our run has grown each year.”

Continued support from Bienfait businesses keeps this race going and raising money for the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

“We have lots of corporate support from the businesses here. They are

very generous.”

In the first three years, the race has raised $13,000.

The arena board makes the decisions about how the money will be spent, but Knight said it usually goes toward the operating cost for the facility.

She said it’s a race that is very accommodating to people who are just starting to run and are maybe looking to get involved in more races.

The Coal Country Run/Walk is a great place for people

who are just starting to race.

“It’s a real good, nice, small race. Anyone who wants to give it a try (should come out).”

The children participating in the mini mile are out collecting pledges so if you’d like to contribute but aren’t much for running, Knight encourages people to make a pledge to the kids.

La Ronge doctor guilty of wielding knife PROVINCIAL LA RONGE, Sask. A northern Saskatchewan doctor has pleaded guilty to professional misconduct for approaching a colleague with a knife.

Dr. Nolan Jansen of La Ronge was charged by the College of Physicians and Surgeons following the incident that occurred outside of the workplace.

Jansen was criminally charged and pleaded guilty to possessing a knife for a purpose dangerous to the public peace and was given a conditional discharge.

He was fined $420 to cover the cost of the college’s investigation and hearing into the incident.

Meanwhile, another La Ronge doctor is facing a college hearing over allegations he touched a female patient inappropriately.

Dr. Kanthan Covenden has denied the allegations and continues to work in La Ronge.

NATIONAL WINNIPEG - A cluster of Manitoba reserves struggling with a lack of running water say Ottawa sent 1,000 slop pails as a solution.

The Island Lake Tribal Council says it asked Indian Affairs to help solve the water crisis on its four remote reserves.

Chief David McDougall, of the St. Theresa Point First Nation, says what they got was a shipment of 800 water containers and 1,000 slop pails.

He says each of the four community also got a sewage truck, but they don’t have the resources or fuel to run it.

Dry in Quebec because the labels may show the beer is weaker than it actually is.

The brewer says a few of the bottles could carry labels indicating an alcohol content of 5.5 per cent instead of 10.1 per cent.

The recalled products were produced for the Quebec market on April 1st and have a black bottle twist cap.

The neck of the affected bottles have a production code beginning with D01.

The recall is being monitored by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

INTERNATIONAL KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Hundreds of Taliban fighters broke out of a prison in a daring escape Sunday night, prompting a huge hunt for the fugitives.

Kandahar Gov. Tooryalai Wesa said Monday that a total of 475 political prisoners had escaped, “including one criminal.”

The insurgents had worked for months digging the tunnel they used to get out, Wesa said.

The tunnel was started in a house located to the north-east of the Sarpoza prison in the city’s Sarfooza

area and continued to the entrance of the prison’s political block about 300 metres away. *** SALT LAKE CITY Book dealer Ken Sanders has seen a lot of nothing in his decades appraising “rare” finds pulled from attics and basements, storage sheds and closets.

Croissant French Toast for Mother’s Day When it’s Mother’s Day, it’s all about tradition in the Paymar/Haddorff household. Now in its 20th year, moms, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and close friends gather in their home around a fabulous Sunday brunch. “It started rather small with our parents, grandparents and siblings long before our sons were born,” said Kara, mom of 11-year-old Eli and 7-year-old Jonah. “It feels like we’ve been doing it forever. In spite of tackling some extra cleaning around the house beforehand, it’s a special day that requires very little planning, and I don’t have to cook a thing,” she assured me.

And they have every detail down pat. “The plan never changes, and our guests know the beat intuitively,” said dad Jeff.

“My dad purchases and prepares the maple sausages from his favorite meat market,” said Kara. “My father-in-law, Bob, brings a fruit salad.

CROISSANT FRENCH

TOAST WITH COOKED APPLES 1 stick of butter (1/4 pound) 1/4 cup raw sugar 4 apples peeled, cored and cut into eighths 1/3 cup pure maple syrup 2 cups milk 3 eggs 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 4 croissants, halved lengthwise Confectioners’ sugar Fresh mint leaves for garnish 1. Melt half the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add raw sugar and cook 1-2 minutes, until the sugar has caramelized.

Add the apples and maple

syrup. Cook over medium heat 20-25 minutes, until apples are tender. Keep warm until ready to serve.

2. Whisk milk, eggs and cinnamon together in a shallow dish. Dip croissant halves into the mixture one or two at a time.

3. Melt some of the remaining butter on a griddle. Cook soaked croissant halves over medium heat until they are golden brown on each side. Repeat with remaining butter and croissant halves.

4. Spoon warm mapleapple mixture on bottom half of a croissant. Cover with the top and dust with confectioners’ sugar. Gar-

nish with mint and serve.

When I recently received a spur-of-the-moment dinner invitation, I politely asked if my hostess wanted me to bring along a dessert. She was grateful for the offer and said that anything I wanted to bring would be great.

I went home thinking I had the basic ingredients to put together a quick dessert, but I found the cupboard was bare. I’d just given a dinner party and, evidently, I’d forgotten to re-stock my go-to dessert components.

That’s the beauty of a box

QUICK CHOCOLATE CARMEL CAKE 1 box German chocolate cake mix (extra-moist

type, or with pudding) Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake-mix box 1 can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk 1 jar (16 to 17 ounce) caramel, butterscotch or fudge topping 1 container (8 ounce) frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 bag (8 ounce) toffee chips or bits 1. Heat oven to 350 F (325 F for dark or nonstick pan). Bake cake as directed on box for 13-by-9-inch pan.

2. Poke top of warm cake every 1/2 inch with handle of wooden spoon.

Drizzle milk evenly over top of cake; let stand until milk has been absorbed into cake. Drizzle with caramel topping. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen cake.

Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or until chilled.

3. Spread whipped topping over top of cake.

Sprinkle with toffee chips.

Store covered in refrigerator.

TIPS: The cake may stick to the wooden spoon handle while you’re using it to make the holes, so occasionally wipe off the handle.

The caramel topping will be easier to drizzle if it has been kept at room

temperature. If refrigerated, remove the lid and microwave on High about 15 seconds.

Nellie’s Custard Bread Pudding This generations-old recipe was a winner in our Mother’s Day Cooking contest.

6 cups whole or 1 percent milk 5 slices firm white bread 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 6 large eggs 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease a 13-by-9-inch glass baking dish.

2. In a 2-quart saucepan, heat milk just to boiling over medium-high heat.

3. Meanwhile, toast bread. Spread butter on 1 side of slices; cut each diagonally into quarters.

4. In medium bowl, beat eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt until blended.

Gradually whisk hot milk into egg mixture until wellcombined. Pour custard into baking dish. Arrange bread, buttered side up, on top of custard; sprinkle with nutmeg.

5. Set baking dish in large (17-by-11 1/2-inch) roasting pan; place pan on oven rack. Pour enough boiling water into pan to come halfway up sides of baking dish.

6. Bake custard 50 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer baking dish to wire rack; let stand 15 minutes to cool before serving. Or cover and refrigerate

The affected area includes the portion of Nicholson Road, north of Wellock Road and Tedford Way. The proposed construction area is shown within the bold line.

At different times, Tedford Way will be closed during the construction for the construction of the underground and surface works. The contractor will provide adequate notiÀcation when limited direct property access and parking restrictions are to occur.

It is anticipated this work will commence during the Week of April 18, 2011 with the order of underground works, earthworks, concrete works, franchise utilities and then road works with an anticipated completion by the end of July, 2011.

In 2010, Estevan Kidsport assisted 92 children and paid out over $13,300 in Ànancial assistance. The Estevan Kidsport Committee is in need of volunteers to join the committee and to help keep assisting children to participate in sports. Anyone interested is asked to call Garth at 634-1883

STAGECOACH ... PRESENTS Walnut Triangles Mothers wanted a quicker way to make treats for their kids. Baking a bar in a pan, then cutting it into individual servings, was a lot easier than rolling, cutting and baking multiple batches of cookies.

1 cup (plus 2 tablespoons) allpurpose flour 5 tablespoons margarine or butter, cold 1 1/2 cups (packed) light brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 large eggs 1 cup walnuts, chopped 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease 9-by-9-inch metal baking pan. Line pan with foil; grease foil.

2. Into medium bowl, measure 1 cup flour. With pastry blender or 2 knives used scissor-fashion, cut in margarine or butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs.

With fingertips, firmly press crumbs onto bottom of pan to form crust. Bake crust 10 to 12 minutes, until golden. Remove pan from oven.

3. Meanwhile, in another medium bowl, with wire whisk or fork, mix brown sugar, vanilla, salt, baking soda, eggs and remaining 2 tablespoons flour until blended. With spoon, stir in walnuts and coconut.

4. Spread filling over warm crust.

Bake 20 minutes or until filling is set and knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack until filling is firm to the touch.

5. When cool, invert onto wire rack and remove foil. Invert again immediately onto cutting board. Cut into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 4 squares.

Cut each square into 2 triangles. Store triangles in tightly covered container up to 1 week. Makes 32 triangles.

The “hot” wire (the one through which electrical current flows) is usually black or red in color, while the neutral wire is usually white (but sometimes blue or green). Loosen the connecting screws and detach the wires, using the needle-nose pliers.

At this point, check the condition of the wires. If the exposed copper ends are frayed and there is a little wire to spare, consider trimming the old wire end and stripping

insulation to expose the same length of twisted copper (just enough to hook around the screw).

Attach the new switch, being sure to hook up the wires in exactly the same configuration. Tighten the screws and then ease the switch into its bracket and replace the mounting screws. Attach the faceplate.

Test your work by turning the circuit back on and flipping the switch.
