MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

DearStudentsandParents,

The past 2 months have indeed been fruitful. Here are the main highlights:

1. SJ Games – It’s always a joy to see house spirit come forth strongly each season, with every student striving to contribute points to their house, working together, and supporting each other. This season was a true display of sportsmanship and team spirit. Well done, everyone! Congratulations to Ignis, the 2024 SJ Games House Champion.

2. MSSD – Kudos to all our students for their medal achievements. Beyond that, double kudos for the effort and heart put into the preparation and training process from the beginning of the year. Regardless of the achievements, you are all winners. A special thanks to our excellent coaches who demonstrated such passion and commitment in training.

3. Space Camp – STEM education has reached a new level of exposure and experience through our school. Students attended an international USstandard initiative with expertise from NASA, and they were truly amazed. This is just the beginning; more camps like this are on the horizon. As Buzz Lightyear says, "To Infinity and Beyond."

4. Field Trips – This year, students experienced a variety of locales: the Malaysian cultural village, the Mamee factory, the beaches of Minyak Beku, the palm oil mill in Kahang, and universities in Iskandar. These trips helped students better understand and appreciate Malaysian culture, learn about product processing, and see the effects of recycling. Thanks to the teachers for arranging such enriching experiences. Field trips are always an essential part of learning.

5. Student Exchanges – We are delighted to

facilitate interactions with other school communities. Our student leaders participated in a camp in South Korea for leadership training and cross-cultural exposure. We also hosted a summer camp for students from China, allowing them to immerse in the Seri Jubli culture and foster friendships. Additionally, the Interschool Sports Collaboration (ISC) gave our Year 8 and 9 students the opportunity to challenge their sportsmanship with partner schools, continuing our annual tradition.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents for their continuous cooperation and support. We could not plan, prepare, and implement these learning experiences without your help. Please be assured that the school remains committed to providing a caring and safe environment for students, reflected in all our initiatives and programs. We welcome your feedback and open communication to strengthen trust and collaboration in our students' learning journey. Let’s continue to build a vibrant learning community together.

Team Events

On 17th and 18th July, the team sports events took place, with secondary students competing on the 17th and primary students on the 18th. The events included badminton, Captain’s Ball, netball, handball, and Galah Panjang. All four houses put forth their best efforts to secure gold medals in each sport.

On 17th July, the secondary students competed in badminton, netball, and handball. The girls’ netball match kicked off the day, showcasing impressive skills from all houses, but Aqua emerged victorious, claiming the gold. Terra secured the gold in the U15 badminton category, while Ignis took the top spot for U18. The boys’ handball competition also saw Ignis clinching the gold.

The following day, 18th July, the primary students participated in their respective events. KS1 students competed in the Galah Panjang competition, where Aqua emerged as the champion. KS2 students competed in badminton and Captain’s Ball, with Aeris claiming the gold in badminton, while Aqua triumphed again in Captain’s Ball.

Track and Field Events

On 19th July, the SJ Games kicked off with a vibrant house parade by the primary students, who dazzled everyone with their creative and entertaining

costumes in their house colours. This year, Aqua won the parade.

Following the parade, the excitement continued with the track events. Each house (Aeris, Aqua, Ignis, and Terra) sent out their best representatives in each category (U9, U12, U15, and U18) to compete for medals. The events began with the 50 metres, followed by the 100 metres, 200 metres, and the relay events—4x50 metres and 4x100 metres.

Once the track and field events concluded, it was time for the parent-teacher events, including the primary telematch, 4x100 metres relay, Captain’s Ball, and tugof-war. The crowd’s excitement was palpable as they cheered on the parents and teachers competing against each other.

The day ended with the prize-giving ceremony. After tallying the scores, Ignis was crowned Champion House of the SJ Games 2024! Additionally, the best male and female athletes were honoured. The winners for Secondary were Ho Kenzo from Ignis and Low Yu Xuan from Aeris, while the winners for Primary were Jimmson Chai from Aqua and Lim Jia Le from Aeris.

MSSD Kluang 2024: A Showcase of Sporting Excellence

INTRODUCTION

MSSD Kluang 2024 has once again proven to be a significant event for young athletes across the district. This annual competition, organised by the Majlis Sukan Sekolah Daerah (District School Sports Council), brings together students from various schools to compete in a wide range of sports. The competition not only fosters a spirit of sportsmanship but also serves as a platform for students to showcase their athletic talents on a larger stage.

This year, SJIS participated in several sporting events: Cross-country, Aquatics, Netball, Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Track & Field, and new additions like Bowling and Golf. Among these, aquatics and basketball stood out, with our students earning medals and going on to represent Kluang in the recently concluded MSSJ (Majlis Sukan Sekolah Johor). Below are interviews with two of our accomplished athletes, Lee Hao Bin (basketball) and Sofie Zaidi (aquatics), who share their experiences and insights from this year's competition.

Interview with Lee Hao Bin

Name: Lee Hao Bin

Year: 11

Position: Small Forward

Achievements: Bronze (MSSD); Bronze (MSSJ)

1. How does it feel to be chosen to represent Kluang again after winning the bronze medal with your team?

I am very happy to be selected again to represent Kluang. I'm glad my teammates and I fought hard together to earn the bronze medal.

2. What do you think helped your team win the bronze medal again this year?

I believe our hard work over the past few months played a big part, and listening to our coach was also very important.

3. What challenges did your team face during the competition, and how did your team overcome them?

During one of our matches, our team had a negative mindset, and everyone was feeling down. Luckily, our coach kept encouraging us. However, we still lost that match.

4. As this is your last year, do you have any advice for next year’s team?

Continue to play basketball and don't give up.

5. Who would you like to thank?

Mostly, I want to thank my coach, Denny. No matter what, he always trusted me and put me on the court.

Interview with Sofie Zaidi

Name: Sofie Zaidi

Year: 9

Favourite Event: 400m Freestyle

Favourite Swimmer: Summer McIntosh

Achievements: 6 golds, 2 silvers (MSSD); 1 silver, 2 bronze (MSSJ)

1. How did it feel to win multiple medals at both the MSSD and MSSJ competitions?

It felt great, and I'm really grateful for my coaches who coached me very well, and my parents who took care of me.

2. What do you think contributed to your outstanding performance at both the MSSD and MSSJ competitions?

I think my consistency in attending training and working hard helped me perform well during the competitions. The guidance from my coaches was also crucial.

3. How did you stay motivated and focused throughout these competitions, especially with so many events to compete in?

What kept me motivated was knowing that I wanted to compete for Malaysia. I knew I had to put in the effort to make that dream come true, which I hope it does in the future.

4. What were the most challenging races for you, and how did you push through to achieve such great results?

The most challenging race was, honestly, the 50m freestyle. I didn’t have enough explosive power for this specific sprint event, unlike other swimmers. But I pushed through by not overthinking and just going for it.

5. Who would you like to thank for supporting you, and what advice would you give to swimmers aiming to reach your level of success?

I would love to thank my friends, family, coaches, and teachers for their amazing support. As for young swimmers, although I still struggle with this, I’d say set a reminder to trust the process, don’t compare yourselves to others, and believe in yourself.

Conclusion

MSSD Kluang 2024 has been an exceptional experience for our athletes, highlighting their dedication, hard work, and the excellent coaching they have received. As we celebrate their successes, we are proud of their achievements and the way they have represented SJIS and Kluang. Congratulations to all our participants, and a heartfelt thank you to the coaches, teachers, and parents for their unwavering support.

HANDONG LEADERSHIP SCHOOL 2024

Introduction

The 2024 Handong Leadership School took place from 7th July to 12th July at Handong Global University in Pohang, South Korea. This enriching experience brought together eight of our Year 10 and Year 11 students, who were accompanied by Ms. Jasmine Liew. Over the course of the camp, students participated in a diverse range of activities designed to enhance their leadership skills, foster cultural exchange, and build lasting friendships. From engaging in Korean classes and club activities to exploring the vibrant cities of Pohang and Gyeongju, the camp offered a dynamic blend of education and fun.

Name: Joanna Marie Smith-Coward Year: Y11S

1. Give a quick summary of the parts you remember of HLS:

- In HLS, we had morning devotionals/ breakfast with our team members, followed by Korean class and club time. My club was Zizzy, which was K-pop dancing. After club, we had lunch, then free activities or two, followed by dinner. After dinner, there was typically another activity, then team time where we could talk and have fun with our teams, and then bedtime. Overall, Handong provided a unique experience of making many friends in a short time, exploring Korean culture, and having so much fun.

2. How was your overall experience in HLS?

- Overall, it was a great experience. I really enjoyed my time with my team (Orange M&Ms), and laughing and making memories was my favourite part of each day. I had so much fun each day, and honestly, it was the best time of my life.

3. What was your favourite part or parts of the overall experience or What did you enjoy?

- My favourite parts of each day were spending time with my team, eating together, laughing together, and sometimes crying together. My two all-time favourite memories would be, firstly, when we went to Gyeongju and spent time with our team leader and her friend, who we quickly adopted into our ‘family’. The second memory would be reconnecting with the staff I met last year.

4. Lastly, what did you learn from this camp?

- I learned how to put myself out there and open up to people without being scared to do so. I also learned that there are many people who are always there for you if you need them.

5. Any last things?

- For anyone considering going to Handong next year, I would highly recommend it as it is a very enjoyable experience. Don’t be shy to do it and, of course, don’t be scared.

Year: Y11B

1. Give a quick summary of the parts you remember of HLS:

- Some of the most memorable parts of my Handong Leadership Camp were the very first day when I stepped into Handong Global University. I was scared, nervous, and anxious about meeting new people. Hundreds of thoughts were running through my mind, but the moment I managed to talk to them and get to know them, I started to think that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Lastly, the night when we had our team meeting at the field was the best one yet! I talked to more people even in the very last moment. It was the best yet saddest one. I never thought I’d miss people that I met just for a week this much, missing the moments and everything I experienced there.

2. How was your overall experience in HLS?

- My overall experience in HLS was beyond amazing. There are never enough words to describe how thankful and happy I was there. I never enjoyed any camp more than I enjoyed this one. If given a chance, I would love to experience it again.

Name: Andy Chang

Year: Y11S

- I remember the variety of activities, from team games to cultural learning sessions. The camp was quite packed with events and outings.

2. How was your overall experience in HLS?

- My overall experience was quite enriching. I enjoyed the camp's structure and the mix of activities.

3. What was your favourite part or parts of the overall experience or What did you enjoy?

- My most favourite part of the overall experience in HLS was the night activity. It was so tiring but worth it! My group got first place for that activity, mostly thanks to Joanna for her big brain. We had to solve a case. It was so exciting that I sometimes forgot that I had exercised more than I usually do.

4. Lastly, what did you learn from this camp? I definitely learned a lot from this camp, not just about leadership and teamwork but also about appreciating and cherishing every moment. I often find myself regretting things at the last moment, so this time, I made sure to enjoy every moment while I was there.

5. Any last things?

- Let’s plan for Handong Leadership Camp 2025, Joanna!

2. How was your overall experience in HLS?

- It was a very precious experience at Handong. I met lots of strangers and made friends with them. This helped me improve many things, including my social skills, and made me realise the importance of friendship.

It was an enriching experience for me to accompany the students to HLS. I had the opportunity to meet representatives who brought students from various countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the USA, and China (Hong Kong). Spending the entire week together, we shared stories about our schools and learned from one another. It was a meaningful cultural exchange as well.

As school representatives, we followed a separate program from the students. We were honoured to meet with some of Handong Global University’s professors, staff members, and even the President, Mr. Choi, to gain a deeper understanding of the university. Additionally, we were invited to visit POSCO Holdings, one of the world’s top 10 steelmakers, located near the university. The visit to their state-of-the-art factory was truly an eye-opener, revealing the

4. Lastly, what did you learn from this camp?

- I learned about the preciousness of friendship and not to be scared of losing friends because there are always people who will support you.

5. Any last things?

- I was actually really shocked on the last day, as I had invested so much emotion and effort into friendships that I had formed in less than a week. This might be because we did everything together, but I particularly appreciated the kindness and respect we showed each other. It was a truly precious experience, especially with people I had only met a few days ago.

cutting-edge technology and innovation at work. During the camp, we also joined the students at times to observe and participate in their activities.

The highlight of the camp for me was witnessing the “Farewell/ Open Mic” session. Many students opened their hearts, sharing their thoughts on the camp and expressing heartfelt gratitude to the camp staff, who are current Handong students. The outpouring of stories and tears of appreciation were incredibly touching.

SJIS has been participating in HLS for several years now, and I firmly believe in the value of continuing this tradition. The efforts Handong Global University puts into organising this camp are truly remarkable and impactful. Many students’ lives are transformed by the lessons and experiences they gain during the camp. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead this group of students on this journey, and I look forward to seeing more students join HLS in the years to come.

Conclusion

Reflecting on the 2024 Handong Leadership School, it is clear that the experience was profoundly impactful for our students. The camp not only provided them with a unique opportunity to step out of their comfort zones but also allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and strengthen their leadership skills. Highlights included the team-building activities, the exploration of Korean culture, and the bonds formed with fellow participants. Overall, the camp was a memorable journey of personal growth and cultural discovery, leaving our students with invaluable lessons and cherished memories.

We visited the Malay Cultural Village in Johor Bahru. This educational excursion aimed to instil a sense of belonging to the Malaysian community. Students participated in a Batik Painting Workshop and enjoyed making Roti Canai, immersing themselves in local art and cuisine.

Key Stage 2 (Year 4–Year 6):

Students explored Mamee Jonker House in Melaka. The trip provided insights into technology and packaging through interactive activities. Students observed the noodle production process, learned how Mamee cup noodles are made from scratch, and customised their own cup noodles.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7–Year 9):

Students took part in a field trip to Pantai Minyak Beku in Batu Pahat, Johor. This excursion combined outdoor adventure with educational activities, including a Precious Plastic Workshop on upcycling plastic waste and team-building games. It aimed to foster social empowerment and community collaboration in seaside rehabilitation.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10):

Year 10 students visited a Palm Oil Plantation Mill in Kahang, Johor. The trip offered insights into the palm oil manufacturing process and business operations. Students also had the opportunity to try their hand at cutting oil palm leaves and fruits, gaining practical knowledge of the industry.

Key Stage 4 (Year 11):

Students participated in a university visit, exploring the University of Reading, the University of Southampton, and Raffles University in Johor Bahru. This excursion aimed to expose them to various academic courses, workshops, and hands-on activities, helping them gain valuable insights into their future studies and career paths.
