his has been a year of special milestone anniversaries for Sentara RMH Medical Center.

First, 2025 marks 30 years of this publication—from its beginning as HealthQuest in 1995 to its later transition to Sentara RMH Magazine. This special edition offers us the opportunity to pause, look back, and celebrate the past 30 years of healthcare history in our community. The past three decades have been defined by change, growth, and our unwavering commitment to serve and care for the Shenandoah Valley.

Another highlight this year was the 15th anniversary of the monumental move from our downtown Harrisonburg hospital to our new medical center campus. On June 22, 2010, 95 patients were transported, one by one, from the old RMH location to our new hospital. That day was more than a move, however—it was a bold statement of what health care in our region could become.

The past 15 years on this campus have been remarkable. Together, we have grown to ensure that our community has access to advanced care close to home. We expanded cardiology with advancements such as TAVR, MitraClip, Watchman devices, pulse field ablation, and a second electrophysiology lab this year. We launched bariatric surgery and robotic platforms, enhanced oncology with state-of-the-art linear accelerators, expanded infusion services, and improved mammography access with additional machines and a mobile unit. We strengthened obstetrics with an OB Hospitalist program and CPAP for newborns. We improved emergency behavioral health safety. We created new community resources such as Rocktown Health and the Sentara Community Cares Center, as well as partnerships that address housing, wellness, and preventive care.

However, technological advancements alone do not ensure exceptional care—that requires the passion and dedication of our team members, who have received some of the national recognition they very much deserve. Sentara RMH has earned Magnet® designation three times in a row, placing us among fewer than 10 percent of U.S. hospitals who have achieved this distinction for nursing excellence. We were named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Top 100 Hospitals® list in 2021, honored three times with the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence in Critical Care, and recognized as a top 10 hospital in Virginia for maternity care by U.S. News & World Report. Our hospital and specialty programs have also received repeated honors from the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and The Leapfrog Group. But we could not have reached these achievements alone.

In another major milestone, the RMH Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025.

With the community’s support, the foundation has been instrumental in helping us expand our care and the reach of our services. The foundation’s donors support our mission and the people— our physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers, and community partners—who make this hospital what it is. The story of Sentara RMH is not only about buildings and technology, but about compassion, collaboration, and a shared commitment to health.

While we don’t know exactly what health care will look like in 2055, we know that change is certain to bring us new technologies, new approaches to prevention, and new ways of partnering with patients and communities. But one thing will remain the same: our promise to provide compassionate, high-quality care, close to home, for generations to come.

The Story of Our Hospital: 30 Years of Patients, Providers, and Care

F

rom asthma and atherosclerosis to ulcers and upper respiratory infections, if there is a condition that can impact the human body, it has been covered in the pages of HealthQuest and Sentara RMH Magazine.

Since its first issue in 1995, this magazine has highlighted health and wellness news, along with the medical issues our patients encounter. The articles have been both informative and educational, while focusing on our commitment to meeting the community’s health needs.

As a writer and managing editor, I am continually amazed by the decades of remarkable articles and stories shared in these pages. Dozens of talented and dedicated individuals have contributed to the magazine’s success over the past 30 years and 95 issues.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the patients who have trusted us with their personal health journeys, sharing both the challenges they have faced and the care they have received at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Your stories of resilience and recovery not only inspire us, but also reinforce our commitment to providing compassionate, quality care to everyone who seeks our assistance.

The theme of this 30th anniversary commemorative edition is to honor the past while looking to the future. In the article on page 4, providers who have treated thousands of patients share their insights into the evolution and advancements of techniques and technologies in health care. We also explore the progress made in the field of nursing, on page 15, looking at the changing role nurses have played in health care over the past three decades.

This edition also pays tribute to the RMH Foundation, on page 27, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The story of Sentara RMH would not be complete without emphasizing the exceptional support provided by the Foundation’s donors over the decades.

Speaking of 50th anniversaries, we would like to recognize five exceptional colleagues who have each worked at Sentara RMH for 50 years. On page 22, these amazing women share the secrets to their happiness and success in serving the community.

Just as the practice of medicine has evolved over the years, so, too, will our storytelling. By utilizing multimedia (videos, photos, and text), going forward we will transition from traditional print to sharing articles on social media and Sentara. com. This shift will allow our stories to be more dynamic and more easily shareable throughout the community and beyond.

Countless changes in health care have taken place in the Valley over the past three decades—perhaps the most notable being Rockingham Memorial Hospital’s 2010 relocation to the current campus at RMH Medical Center, as well as its subsequent merger with Sentara in 2011. And since then, the hospital’s footprint and breadth of services have continued to evolve, with major additions such as the Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center, the Sentara RMH Orthopedic Center, robotic surgery capabilities, and a structural heart program.

“Each service line supports each other, and there’s a synergy that develops as one area advances, prompting another to respond,” explains Robert Garwood, MD, a general surgeon who joined the team in Harrisonburg in 2007 and is now the Sentara RMH vice president and chief medical officer. “That growth has allowed us to take

care of more patients and bring new providers in, who bring in even more ideas.”

Strengthening Surgery

In the nearly 20 years since Dr. Garwood began practicing in Harrisonburg, one significant shift in medicine has been the increase in use of laparoscopic surgeries. In contrast to “open surgeries,” which raise the risk of

infections, higher pain levels, and longer recoveries, less invasive laparoscopic procedures result in quicker healing for patients with fewer complications and the shortening—or even elimination—of hospital stays for many patients.

In the early 2000s, RMH built a fully automated laparoscopic room, complete with the ability to change the laparoscope camera angles and zoom, adjust the lighting, and change the surgical table position using only voice commands.

“With the laparoscopic suite, we were able to benefit

technology for total and partial knee replacements. Utilizing a computed tomography (CT) scan to map out a more reliable and exact plan for a knee replacement, Mako helps surgeons carry out procedures with more precision. Sentara RMH has also recently added the Mazor™ robotic guidance system to assist in surgical navigation and operative planning, resulting in more efficient spinal procedures.

Adopting these expanded surgery technologies and techniques in turn has attracted more highly qualified surgeons to Sentara RMH, enabling more patients to be treated locally than ever before.

Evolving Heart Care from high-definition views, scopes, and optics—all the cutting-edge equipment,” Dr. Garwood explains. “We could tackle more complex cases with minimally invasive techniques.

Part of that was starting the bariatric program, which added another service line for the patient population.”

In another giant leap for surgical capabilities, robotic procedures became a reality at Sentara RMH in 2021.

“Robotic surgery gives you the advantage of better visualization and more dexterity,” Dr. Garwood says. “That results in less wear and tear on the surgeon, allowing them to operate longer and more comfortably with the better ergonomics, while providing excellent outcomes for patients.”

Sentara RMH surgeons use the DaVinci robotic surgical system for prostate and colon surgeries, gynecologic

procedures, weight loss surgery, gall bladder removal, hernia repairs, appendectomies, and partial nephrectomies to remove malfunctioning kidneys.

medical group, which treated patients at RMH. Drs. Lee and Pollock were the first cardiologists to offer procedures at the hospital.

Today, Sentara Cardiology Specialists, which is part of Sentara RMH Medical Group, provides care with the help of a team of cardiologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

As its cardiology program developed, RMH was one of the first hospitals in Virginia to adopt digital echocardiographs, an ultrasound that checks the structure and function of the heart.

Instead of recording the images on a videotape, RMH began to store them digitally—a new technology at the time, according to Dr. Pollock. The RMH cardiology department was also one

of the first in the state to acquire color Doppler echocardiograph technology, which displays blood flow more accurately.

“This may seem like ancient history now, but the cardiology program at RMH has always been on the forefront of innovation,” notes Dr. Pollock.

In the early 1990s, the hospital established a catheterization (“cath”) lab, where cardiologists feed a thin tube through a patient’s arteries to the heart in order to diagnose or treat conditions.

By 2000, angioplasties and stent procedures, which open blocked arteries, were also being performed in cath labs across the country. However, the American College of Cardiology recommended that hospitals offering those procedures also have on-site heart surgery capabilities, which RMH didn’t yet offer.

“We reviewed the data, visited a number of other hospitals, and came to the conclusion that because of advances in pharmacology and technology, we could safely perform stents and angioplasty without on-site surgery,” recalls Dr. Pollock. “Now that thinking is mainstream and not a bit controversial. I really

respected our hospital board for making that decision.”

It wasn’t long, though, before RMH did add heart surgery to its services, as well as developing an electrophysiology program, which specializes in diagnosing abnormal heart rhythms.

“We have been able to push the envelope with types of disease and extent of disease severity, as we’ve expanded the department and brought in more specialists,” says Dr. Garwood.

The latest expansion in cardiology at Sentara RMH involves structural heart services, through which interventional cardiologists and heart surgeons treat the walls, valves, and chambers of the heart.

As part of those services, Salman Allana, MD, who is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, pioneered transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) at Sentara RMH. To perform the minimally invasive TAVR procedure, surgeons insert a new aortic valve via a catheter to replace a damaged valve. With this life-

changing procedure, patients can avoid open-heart surgery.

“The onset of TAVR has really been miraculous, and is perhaps the most dramatic heart innovation I’ve seen in my career,” explains Dr. Pollock. “Structural heart is in an explosive development stage, and I do not think they are finished developing other technology. It’s a blooming science that offers great benefits for patients.”

Stroke Treatments: Time Is Brain

Detecting blood clots and blockages swiftly is also critical in stroke care, which has improved over the years due to technological advances and because, thanks to extensive community education, people in general are now more likely to recognize the signs of stroke.

“Symptom identification is the first link in the stroke chain of survival,” notes Carlissa Lam, stroke program coordinator at Sentara RMH. “As the

community’s awareness of stroke symptoms and the need to call 911 increases, we can quickly diagnose and treat more patients and limit disabilities and death.”

Since, as the saying goes with stroke care providers, “time is brain,” Sentara RMH has consistently worked to diagnose and treat stroke patients more rapidly.

“More than 20 years ago, we used to diagnose some of these patients with a transient ischemic attack, discharge them from the Emergency Department, and tell them to follow up with their primary care provider,” Lam says.

“Now we admit them to complete their stroke workup and help identify their individual modifiable risk factors to help prevent further strokes.”

The introduction in 1996 of alteplase (tPA) to treat acute ischemic strokes, which occur when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain, revolutionized stroke care. The clot-busting medication must be administered within 3 hours to 4.5 hours sentara.com

(depending on the patient) after the onset of stroke symptoms in order to be most effective. The quicker tPA is administered, the better the patient outcome.

To meet these crucial time markers, Sentara RMH has continued to develop better systems and structures to diagnose patients with strokes as quickly as possible, Dr. Garwood says. Today, specialized stroke teams meet patients when they arrive in the Emergency Department in order to streamline the process. Emergency nurses and physicians also work closely with radiology, the pharmacy, and the lab to respond rapidly and diagnose strokes.

“Our patients start on a stroke stretcher that is zeroed out to take an accurate weight and monitor vitals,” explains Jon Barni, a Sentara RMH stroke team nurse. “One nurse charts while the doctor assesses the patient. The other nurse and tech

obtain a weight, vitals, glucose, and place an IV before heading off to CT.” While the patient is in the CT to image the brain, a Sentara neurologist joins the stroke team via telehealth to make a real-time assessment and review the scans.

The team uses a communications platform called Viz.ai., introduced in 2021, that taps into AI algorithms to accelerate data analysis and stroke diagnosis.

Four years ago, tenecteplase (TNK) replaced tPA as the preferred blood clot-busting medication for stroke patients. Since TNK is given with a single injection that is completed within seconds—as opposed to tPA, which requires an injection followed by a continuous infusion over the course of an hour—TNK can be administered while the patient is still on the CT table. However, like tPA, TNK must also be administered within 3 hours to 4.5 hours of the onset of stroke symptoms.

Patients who have a large vessel occlusion, or head bleed, or who require neurointerventional surgery or other neurosurgery for any reason, are transferred out, Lam says. Even in such cases, however, the stroke team and processes in place allow such a transfer to happen more quickly.

As a result of these efforts, Sentara RMH has been recognized with the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® award for providing the highest-quality stroke care to our community.

This recognition reflects the dedication of so many—from first responders and emergency call operators to our Emergency Department, inpatient nurses and

providers, Telestroke partners, consulting neurologists, and our exceptional stroke coordinator.

In the future, Lam hopes to increase stroke education efforts during community events—especially in rural areas with more vulnerable patient populations—to continue to raise awareness about stroke symptoms.

Cancer Care Under One Roof

The first cancer center at RMH opened in 1990 at the old hospital, following a community survey conducted by the hospital board that revealed a growing need for local oncology care. To establish the center, hematologist oncologist Brian Robinson, MD, spearheaded the new medical oncology program, and Robert Kyler, MD, helped to found the hospital’s radiation oncology program.

When the new campus was built, the Sentara Hahn Cancer Center began to offer cancer patients and their families comprehensive cancer services— imaging, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, lab, infusions, and social and financial support—all under one roof.

Anita Smootz, who began her career as a radiation therapist at RMH in 1996, has served as the manager of radiation oncology at Sentara RMH since 2018.

According to Smootz, cancer education outreach and screening technology—including 3D mammography, breast MRIs, lung CTs, and mobile mammography vans—have played pivotal roles in diagnosing cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

“Advances in imaging quality have enabled us to target

smaller treatment fields with higher doses, allowing us to spare healthy tissue and critical organs,” Smootz says. “Also, when I started my career, breast

treatments used to take about six weeks, Monday through Friday.

Now treatments can range from one treatment a week for five weeks to 20 treatments total.”

In the past, most protocols called for surgery to remove a tumor, followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or both. Today, effective doses of chemo and radiation can sometimes shrink a tumor to the point where surgery is no longer needed, Smootz says.

Linear accelerators have also been an important tool in the cancer arsenal at Sentara. These powerful machines customize high-energy X-rays or electrons to conform to a tumor’s shape and destroy cancer cells, while sparing surrounding normal tissue. RMH installed the first linear accelerator at the old hospital in the early 1990s. The latest, state-of-the art linear accelerators from Varian were added in 2019 and 2025.

Another major development in cancer care has been the advent of genetic counseling and genetic testing, which are used to identify patients who may be at a higher risk of developing cancer, says Shelby Schultz, manager of nursing and patient care services at the Hahn Cancer Center. In addition to genetic screenings, 12 |

patients can meet with genetic counselors to help understand and potentially mitigate their cancer risks.

Immunotherapy has been another promising addition to the fight against cancer.

For some patients who have run out of treatment options, a type of treatment known as Bispecific T-Cell Engager (BiTE) immunotherapy may be available, explains Amber Minnick, supervisor of nursing and patient care services at the Hahn cancer center. BiTE therapy uses the

patients’ own body to fight off cancer by harnessing their T cells (immune cells) to identify, target, and eliminate cancer cells.

Managing treatment side effects more effectively has also become a major priority for cancer caregivers at Sentara RMH. Besides medications, the introduction of the cooling cap has helped to reduce hair loss for some patients undergoing chemotherapy.

“We also partner closely with palliative care,” Schultz says. “While some people associate palliative care with end-of-life care, it goes beyond that to help control pain, nausea, and other symptoms. At Sentara RMH, patients can access this type of care in the same building as their other appointments.”

Caring for the whole person—physically, financially, and emotionally—inspired the Showalter family to create the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic at the Hahn Cancer Center in honor of their mother and wife. The clinic gives patients access to resources, such as travel and medication assistance,

individual counseling, and many other comfort items and care— services that will continue to be available to patients through their post-cancer maintenance and recovery period.

In any service line or specialty at Sentara RMH, teamwork is the link that creates consistent, comprehensive care for patients.

“Our commitment to care for the community and the passion our staff has for providing that care to patients have never changed,” Schultz says. “Our staff builds connections with our patients, and their heart is in it for the right reasons. This has been consistent across the whole team throughout the years.”

In cancer care, multidisciplinary teams made up of a range of specialists review cases during cancer boards.

“They don’t work in isolation,” says Dr. Garwood. “They work as a team and review cases as a team, just like we do in many other service lines.”

Much the same is true in cardiology. Dr. Pollock notes that as more cardiologists with specialized skills have been added to the Sentara RMH staff, they have gladly shared their expertise and collaborated with other providers to offer the highest quality of care.

“Our cardiologists have always supported each other, learned from each other, and shared a common goal, rather than a sense of competition,” says Dr. Pollock. “This spirit extends to our staff as well—the pervasive attitude at Sentara RMH is that we are a united team, all working for the benefit of our patients.” sentara.com

The Next 30 Years: Exploring the Future of Medicine The increased use of artificial intelligence (AI), greater employment of advanced practice providers like nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and the expansion of telehealth options are likely to trends in the future of medicine during the coming decades.

Due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth options have increased exponentially.

This development has been particularly instrumental in reaching areas with shortages of providers, and in the future we may see more specialists joining telehealth to assist with more isolated populations.

This scenario could even include surgeons who operate remotely to perform robotic surgery on a patient.

“A surgeon could be sitting at a console in a major hospital and assisting a team in a critical access hospital in West Virginia, where there might be no or few surgeons,” suggests Robert Garwood, MD, chief medical officer for Sentara RMH Medical Center.

Physician Shortage The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates a coming shortage of 86,000 physicians by 2036, due to population growth among those 65 and older, as well as the retirement of current physicians.

Right now, physicians aged 65 or older make up 20 percent of the clinical physician workforce, and those between the ages of 55 and 64 make up 22 percent, according to the AAMC. In the future, patients likely will need to rely more on advanced practice providers like nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurse anesthetists, says Dr. Garwood.

“Radiology, anesthesia, gastroenterology—these are all disciplines where there will be a shortage of doctors,” Dr. Garwood explains. “These are all areas in which advanced practice providers will have to supplement care and be trained for more comprehensive care.”

Heart Care Outlook One notable development in cardiac care is that today’s cardiologists are seeing more cases of heart disease caused by methamphetamine use, which is occurring more frequently in younger people, according to Stewart Pollock, MD, a recently retired Sentara RMH cardiologist who began working at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in 1991.

Another new trend, according to Dr. Pollock, involves the use of more advanced imaging technology to diagnose diseases like takotsubo cardiomyopathy (also known as “broken-heart syndrome”) that cardiologists weren’t able to detect previously. The symptoms of broken-heart syndrome are so similar to those of a heart attack that imaging studies are often needed to rule out a heart attack—which makes the latest imaging techniques so important.

“Treatment options and diagnostic ability have grown leaps and bounds in the last 30 years,” Dr. Pollock says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if, going forward, we developed a dedicated advanced heart failure program at Sentara RMH. Clinical research could also become a part of the cardiology program in the future. We have smart and motivated people who could make that happen.”

Streamlining Diagnoses and Processes with AI Finding ways to streamline processes through AI, another major trend, likely will bring more efficiency in care, giving providers more time with their patients.

“AI tools can help you review labs and provide suggestions on your diagnoses,” says Dr. Garwood. “I can see AI helping researchers develop new drugs, due to its ability to crunch data.”

Dr. Pollock agrees that AI will dramatically help with diagnosis. In fact, it has already provided benefits, such as image review, which has helped detect some breast cancers, he says.

“I’m sure we will see some value from artificial intelligence,” Dr. Pollock adds. “But I think the practice of medicine will always hinge on human interaction.”

on patient safety, nurses at Sentara RMH Medical Center have continued and reinforced that tradition, expanding their roles and responsibilities in our new hospital.

Sentara RMH nurses now collaborate regularly with physicians, often have higher-level degrees, and must master more frequent technological advances than their predecessors 30 years ago.

Many were also challenged to persevere through the difficult and unpredictable conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When I became a nurse, we still wore white uniforms—in some cases white dresses,” recalls Gina Yost, vice president and chief nursing officer at Sentara RMH. “Then we started to see scrubs coming in, and at the same time our collaboration with our specialists and physicians changed.”

When Kimberly Teter, a Sentara RMH clinical nurse manager, began her nursing career more than 20 years ago, her hands would shake and her voice would quiver at the Kimberly Teter thought of speaking up to a physician. That’s changed now.

“As the years have progressed, there is more teamwork among nurses and physicians,” says Teter, who has spent her entire career at the old and new hospitals. “Nurses are with patients for the entire day and even multiple days in a row, so the providers rely on nurses to be their eyes and ears and to explain what is taking place with patients.”

Multidisciplinary rounds—during which various disciplines discuss a patient’s case, with nurses also present—are now standard protocol. These provider huddles help enhance patient care and outcomes.

“The process was more hierarchical back then, and we deferred to physicians more often,” Yost adds.

“Now, nurses are seen as collaborative members of the team and share a voice in what’s happening with the care of the patient.”

Advanced Degrees and New Leadership In 2010, prominent nursing associations and the landmark Future of Nursing report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recommended that nurses earn more ad16 |

vanced degrees to meet the nation’s nursing needs and deliver safer patient care. In response, more programs were developed to enable registered nurses (RNs) to earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees.

By 2023, the National Nursing Workforce Survey showed for the first time that nearly 72 percent of RNs had a BSN degree or higher. Additionally, about 17 percent of RNs in the United States have earned a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.

Teter, whose clinical experience includes oncology, emergency nursing, and currently surgical services, followed this path, beginning her nursing career in 2004 as a licensed practical nurse. She took more classes to become an RN with an associate’s degree, and then earned a BSN in 2015.

Giles Eanes, manager of the progressive care unit (PCU) at Sentara RMH, began his career at the hospital in 2011. Two years later, he moved overseas to Colombia, where he and his wife worked for a nonprofit.

Before moving back to the U.S. and Giles Eanes rejoining Sentara RMH in 2018, Eanes began working part time on his MSN, completing the degree program in 2021. At the same time, his leadership roles expanded from PCU team coordinator to interim manager, before he was officially promoted as a manager.

“Nursing is an interesting field, since it requires a lot of training even after you get your degree, and you get that training on the job from other RNs,” he explains. “I have benefited from a lot of different preceptors over the years. They each have their own style, with different ways to structure their day, prioritize tasks, and delegate responsibilities. I have learned what styles work for me and have incorporated them into the way I do nursing. The same has been true with how to lead.”

As more nurses who are baby boomers retire, new leaders are rolling in, Yost says. Thirty years ago, nurses were promoted primarily based on their years of clinical experience. Now, hiring managers are looking at both expertise and leadership skills, as the workplace becomes increasingly complex.

The nursing role has also expanded as more people become nurse practitioners, midwives, and nurse anesthetists, according to Jenay Mason, director of acute patient care services at Sentara RMH.

“We also have seen an increase in specialized areas among bedside nurses, such as oncology, critical care, cardiac, surgical, and neurology,” Mason explains.

From Paper to Electronic Records

As technology marches on, the transformation from paper records to electronic records is one of the most revolutionary changes health care has experienced over the past 30 years. Now, paper records seem as outdated as those old dial-up phones with long, stretchy cords.

Yost remembers keeping track of patients on a standardized trifold flow sheet that would cover 24 hours. Early computer systems, such as MS-DOS, used various function keys to enter data, she says.

Even 15 years ago, paper records were the model, which left room for error.

“A physician would come into the nursing station and write orders in a chart by hand, and then those would have to be manually entered into a computer by one of our administrative assistants,” Eanes says. “Not only did this take longer, but it was also prone to errors, since a doctor’s handwriting was not always clear.”

The switch to electronic orders began in 2010.

While that transformation involved a steep learning curve, implementing electronic records allowed for quicker response, enabled more collaboration and efficiency, and elevated quality and safety.

“We could also integrate with records outside of the hospital, sharing with other facilities and primary care providers,” Yost notes.

Other tools that now seem second nature, like smartphones, have also helped improve care. For instance, nurses now use a secure iPhone chat app to

message doctors directly, enabling them to exchange clinical information from the bedside in real time, Yost says.

Patients’ charts automatically update when nurses scan patients’ identification bands and medications.

Intravenous pumps and other equipment also send information to charts. Other examples of more efficient communication and documentation include the rising use of telehealth and remote monitoring devices, Mason adds.

With technology making so many aspects of patient care more efficient, nurses can now focus more on working with patients directly, helping to make them comfortable and resolving any bedside issues. sentara.com

Standardized Procedures

In the early 2000s, a widely circulated report on preventing medical errors from the Institute of Medicine led to significant changes aimed at reducing those errors. As a result, a new emphasis on quality and safety of care emerged.

“Over the years, our policies and procedures have shifted to follow evidence-based practices,” Teter says.

“This ensures that our quality measures, safety habits, and workflows have a purpose, are consistent, and will provide a positive outcome for our patients.”

These procedures at Sentara RMH have been developed thanks to the work of robust councils and committees that have included nurses, giving the nursing staff a voice and allowing them to be advocates for patient care, she adds.

Recognizing Success

Over the years, hospital accreditation and recognition programs have been created by professional organizations to help drive quality improvement and accountability in nursing.

For example, the American Nurses Credentialing Center has recognized Sentara RMH as a Magnet® program of nursing excellence three separate times since 2014. This distinction is achieved by fewer than 10 percent of hospitals nationwide.

Sentara also collaborates with The DAISY Foundation™ to recognize nurses who go above and beyond to exemplify compassionate care.

Coping with COVID

Following safety procedures became paramount during the COVID-19 crisis. With nebulous, rapidly fluctuating information continually emerging about the virus, hospitals had to react swiftly to help keep their staff and patients safe.

Nevertheless, healthcare workers faced limited resources. Nurses shifted from unit to unit as priorities changed and certain procedures were put on hold, Mason says. Healthcare teams cared for patients with COVID amid a backdrop of fear and anxiety. Many worried about getting sick or spreading the virus at home. The mental toll was heavy as they witnessed patients die, often alone and away from their families, during the early months of the pandemic.

“When COVID began, I was working in the emergency room,” Teter says. “As you can imagine, the beginning was very chaotic. Workflow and processes were amended almost daily to meet the everchanging information we received.”

Sentara RMH set up tents outside, and emergency staff wore protective equipment that resembled hazmat suits. Although their lives were turned upside down, Teter says nurses relied on their shared camaraderie to pull them through. They also greatly appreciated the thoughtful community support they received, including food, cards, prayers, and kind words.

AI Revolution

As industries across the board grapple with how and when to implement artificial intelligence (AI), Sentara is no exception. Senior leaders at Sentara take part in an AI committee that oversees use cases and the development of AI tools systemwide.

At Sentara, providers are currently using AI tools to help create clinical notes from patient visits and suggest updates for more comprehensive discharge summaries.

The ability of AI to crunch and analyze data also helps staff recognize clinical patterns. For example, a “sepsis sniffer” integrated with electronic medical records uses algorithms to review data and identify those who may be at higher risk for developing sepsis, Yost explains.

While AI may transform medicine in much the same way the internet and electronic medical records have, one aspect will remain unchanged: compassion for patients, which has been the cornerstone of care since the founding of Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

“We never want to forget those human-to-human interactions with our patients,” Yost cautions. “We want to understand patient preferences, have conversations with them, and take time to sit and connect.

Health care is an industry defined by constant evolution, with few things remaining the same for long. Over the past five decades, there have been transformational changes at the hospital— from handwritten charts to digital records, from open wards to specialized care units, from a local focus to a systemwide approach.

But one thing has remained remarkably steady at Sentara RMH: the dedication of five extraordinary women who have each spent more than 50 years serving our community.

While it is certainly remarkable to have five Sentara RMH colleagues who have been working for 50 years, it’s even more remarkable that two of them, Kathy Albrite and Sharon Nesselrodt, are sisters. And even more notable?

They’re twins.

Kathy knew she wanted to be a nurse at age 6. Her twin, Sharon, was interested in a career in health care as well.

“I feel that the Lord wanted me to be a nurse,” Kathy says. “I stayed for over 50 years because I still enjoy taking care of my patients and see the rewards of it. It has been a blessing to me.”

Sharon started as a unit secretary, worked in different clerical positions, and learned a lot of new, updated technologies over the past 50 years. Her advice is to approach each step as an opportunity in your career, not just tasks to complete your job.

“Take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the hospital,” Sharon says. “Keep learning even when you say, ‘I am too old to learn.’”

Two desks away from Sharon in the Sentara RMH Business Office is Judy Swope, a payment processing associate who has been with the hospital for 56 years. She remembers the days before computers when patients received handwritten bills upon discharge. Together, with Sharon, they refer to themselves as the “golden girls.” Judy says the highlight of her career has been the relationships she’s made along the way.

“The people you work with become a family,” Judy explains. “The good days outnumber the bad ones. You can make a difference in someone’s life—co-worker, patient, or visitor.”

While Karen Jordan’s current title is operations coordinator, over the past 52 years she’s worked in several different roles, starting as a clerk on the nursing units before shifting to risk management, and then to quality and patient safety. She’s also performed countless tasks outside of her job descriptions with a caring attitude.

“I loved helping patients in any way I could, as well as my co-workers on very busy, stressful days,” Karen says.

“This has been a great experience, and I have enjoyed it very much.”

Kim Stanchfield’s first day at RMH was June 9, 1975, when she started as a registered nurse. “I didn’t really want to be a nurse,” Kim says. “My dad said, ‘Go be a nurse.’ I really didn’t like it until I went to the emergency room in school and said, ‘You know, I want to do this.’”

Fifty years later, it’s safe to say that Kim made a great decision. She’s spent the past 37 years in occupational health.

“My favorite is working with employees, helping employees,” Kim explains. “They treated me very well here. Sentara has been a good employer, and you’re so invested in the place that you really don’t want to leave. And I never found anything else I ever wanted to do.”

Editor’s note: Kim Stanchfield retired on Oct. 1, 2025. Susan Miller, a clinical lab assistant, will join the Sentara RMH 50-year club in the first quarter of 2026.

Carrying Our Hospital’s Legacy Forward

M

ore than a century later, these words still resonate. In fact, they feel even more poignant today. They were written by members of our community in response to Cory Davies, William Glodomore Leake’s extraordinary bequest to Executive Director create a hospital for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Mr. Leake asked for no recognition. In fact, he requested that the hospital not be named for him. His gravestone simply reads: “He devoted his life to honest work and his wealth to relieve human suffering. Rockingham Memorial Hospital is his monument.”

Today, more than 113 years later, the monument Mr. Leake helped build stands not in stone alone, but in every life touched by the care made possible through philanthropy. And the story of that care— —1909 fundraising appeal of extraordinary care close to home—is your story. for Rockingham Memorial In 2025, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the RMH Foundation.

Giving It Their All Donors make major impacts on quality of care at Sentara RMH Every dollar graciously donated to the RMH Foundation represents an act of selflessness and kindness, a chance to heal, and an opportunity to honor.

The driving force for donors to contribute to the hospital’s foundation is often rooted in a deep personal connection, branching out with a desire to positively impact others in the community. Since a bequest from William Glodomore Leake in 1908 that led to the construction of Rockingham Memorial

Hospital in Harrisonburg, thousands of donors have followed his lead.

The RMH Foundation, which took over the hospital’s philanthropic efforts in 1975, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, following five decades of supporting health care in our region.

The foundation’s initial major capital campaign, in 1987, yielded $3.5 million to build the community’s first cancer center, which later evolved into the Sentara RMH Hahn Cancer Center.

In 1997, the foundation kicked off a campaign to establish an endowment, with a fundraising goal of $5 million. Over the next five years, the campaign raised double that amount.

In 2010, the foundation’s Second Century of Service campaign raised more than $15 million to build the new hospital campus in Rockingham

Rocktown Health helped expand access to acute care, substance use treatment, and behavioral health services for those most in need.

None of these major initiatives, however, would have come to fruition without the charitable contributions of our kind and selfless community.

And for the past 30 years, the pages of this magazine have regularly celebrated those donors, as well as the remarkable RMH Foundation achievements to which they have given so generously.

For this commemorative issue, we spoke with three such donors about what their participation in foundation campaigns has meant to them.

Turning Loss into a Legacy

And thanks to the community’s continued generosity, more facilities have since followed, including the 2024 opening of the Strength in Peers Respite Home, which helps those facing homelessness by offering a safe place to recover after being discharged from the hospital. Most recently, the opening of

Larry Showalter and his three children have developed a knack for putting the “fun” in fundraising. Whether through an annual golf tournament or a holiday basketball classic, finding enjoyable and memorable ways to raise money has helped family members through their grief and carried on the memory of their beloved wife and mother, Twila Showalter.

The family’s main cause has become the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic at the Sentara

RMH Hahn Cancer Center. Since 2018, less than a year after Twila died from colon cancer, the Showalters have raised money to help families in similar situations, formalizing their efforts in 2024 with a $1 million pledge to the foundation for the care clinic. This pledge enables the clinic to provide comprehensive supportive care—addressing not only medical needs like cancer prevention screenings for underserved populations, but also the emotional, practical, and quality-of-life support that helps patients and families navigate every stage of their journey.

According to Amber Sabbatini, Twila’s eldest daughter, one of the clinic’s goals is to help families like the Showalters, who experienced a wide range of emotions—including a sense of the unknown— upon learning of Twila’s cancer diagnosis.

“If it hasn’t happened to you or a family member, then oh my gosh, that’s amazing,” says Sabbatini. “But you’re lucky. If it happens, where do you turn?

“Having a local hospital, people maybe take that for granted. A familiar face changes a lot for patient care.”

When the family began its fundraising efforts, setting up a clinic in Twila’s name wasn’t the goal.

As their campaign gathered momentum, however,

and the need for such a facility became apparent, establishing the clinic turned into their main focus.

“The care we got there is one of the reasons we wanted to be associated with it,” says Larry Showalter. “One of Twila’s nurses is now the nurse navigator there. It’s a top-notch facility.” supportRMH.org

Having fun on the putting green each September and on the hardwood with a December basketball tournament, the Showalters have discovered the value of strength in numbers and have forged their own path to achieve their charitable accomplishments.

“I think our family is a picture of resiliency,” says Jason Wagner, Twila’s son. “As a community, what resiliency requires is us working together, responding to challenges. We see the needs of cancer patients, and we know we can do more together than individually. This needs to expand.

More people need help. Our mother can be a seed for that.”

The family’s connection to Sentara RMH and the Hahn Cancer Center has certainly branched out in the years since their efforts began.

“We were kind of our own supportive care clinic,” says Brandy Painter, Twila’s youngest daughter. “She was in good hands with the hospital, good hands with my dad, good hands with all of us. She was in good hands with her own journey because she had the positive mindset that she was going to live her life the way she wanted to, regardless of her diagnosis.

“God forbid anybody gets that diagnosis. I hope their journey is as positive a one as we were able to have with our mom, because you don’t always get that.”

Although no longer working with patients, she found the next best opportunity: helping others achieve that dream. Her connection with Sentara RMH began in 2000, when she was appointed to the board of trustees—later becoming the first woman to serve as the hospital’s board chair.

In 2014, as chairwoman of the Leadership Council for the new RMH Foundation Institute for Nursing Excellence and Innovation, Stoltzfus oversaw $2.2 million in fundraising. The institute was created to advance Sentara RMH’s tradition of nursing excellence and to support its local nursing staff.

Since its establishment, the institute has provided more than $1 million in scholarships for local nurses to help them advance their education and training. Stoltzfus says she is proud to help nurses on their way to earning bachelor’s degrees in their field, which also contributes to the fulfillment of a parallel

Giving Nurses a Lift

It’s only fitting that Barbara Stoltzfus wants nurses to reach new heights.

In 1997, the Stoltzfus family founded Dynamic Aviation, a Bridgewater-based aircraft maintenance company that has since been well known in the area. When the company launched, Barbara embarked on a new path in the family business, following a long career in nursing.

Thirty years prior, she had graduated from the Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Delaware and then worked various places as a nurse. She and her husband, Karl, settled in the Valley while he attended what was then known as Eastern Mennonite College.

Despite her eventual move into aviation, however, nursing never left her mind.

“Nursing really appealed to me,” Stoltzfus says. “There’s something about nursing that is special. It’s the call you have, to serve people and to care for people.”

“The Magnet expectations are hard to meet,” Stoltzfus says. “You know the nurses have gone through some rigorous training to earn it. Because of my background and philanthropic desires, this just fits really well for me. We didn’t have much to give growing up. My parents were diligent about giving back and serving people, and I learned how important it was to give.”

Stoltzfus adds that anyone—even those without a nursing background—can see the value in supporting the local hospital and its foundation.

“RMH is a community hospital,” she says.

“The money the foundation raises stays here.

That really can’t be stressed enough. I’ve always believed it’s very important to encourage people to give and to talk about the benefits of giving.

There’s a joy in giving.”

Honoring Local Pioneers in Health Care

From afar, Jan Scaglione has a fondness for the Shenandoah Valley’s hospital care, which was established decades ago thanks to her parents, Fred and Virginia Funkhouser.

In their memory, Scaglione, a Florida resident, has been a force in raising money to

improve the care offered to women. In 2012, she served as an honorary chair of the hospital’s Women for Generations campaign, for which she was the primary benefactor. Exceeding its initial goal, the campaign raised $1.8 million to build the Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center.

“In big places, you see the doctor, you’re a number, you get your 15 minutes,” Scaglione says. “At Sentara RMH, it’s way more personal and they truly care. At the [women’s] center they talk to the women, and they care for them. It’s fantastic. It’s just different there.”

Support for the center came through the Fred O. Funkhouser Charitable Foundation. A Harrisonburg native and philanthropist, Fred Funkhouser died in 2005.

Scaglione’s mother, Virginia Coffelt Funkhouser, graduated from the RMH School of Nursing and worked at the hospital in the 1930s.

Sentara RMH’s health sciences library is named in her honor, having passed in 1997.

Scaglione contemplated various ways in which she could further support Sentara RMH in her parents’ honor, and women’s care seemed to be a good fit. She couldn’t be happier with the results of the contributions, from the full women’s center to the specialized equipment within. Such advancements include a breast imaging system—the first of its kind on the East Coast in 2017—that allows physicians to biopsy lesions detected through molecular imaging in a single patient visit.

In 2022, a contribution from the Fred O. Funkhouser Charitable Foundation Board led to the purchase of a new mobile mammography van, replacing one that had been in service for a quarter-century. The van brings with it the same 3D imaging software capabilities available at the Funkhouser Women’s Center, improving access to critical screening services to a larger pool of Valley residents—especially for women over 40.

“It’s so important to get your mammogram,” Scaglione says. “It’s a huge thing.”

Although the people who benefit from generous gifts might be anonymous to donors like her, selflessness and kindness do not require receipts.

“Each person has their own objectives for what to give to,” Scaglione says. “My passion is what to do for women in the Valley. That’s why I give.” supportRMH.org
