s the holiday season winds down and the new year begins, I find myself reflecting on the spirit of gratitude and the importance of family and friendship.

It is a time when we gather with loved ones, share cherished traditions, and express our appreciation for the blessings in our lives.

Our hospital has been a cornerstone of this community for generations. We are incredibly fortunate to have the privilege of caring for our patients and their families, and we are grateful for the countless individuals who have dedicated their lives to this mission.

It is particularly heartwarming to see families who have carried on this legacy.

Currently, we have more than 50 sets of parent and child(ren) team members at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Some of these families stretch across three generations at the hospital!

One of the most unique among them is the father-daughter duo of neurologists, Dr. Karoly Varga and Dr. Zsofia Varga Hole, featured on page 19. Their bond and shared expertise provide exceptional care to our Sentara Neurology Specialists patients, exemplifying the power of family and the dedication of our healthcare professionals.

The holiday season is also a time to celebrate the power of friendship. As you will read on page 14, Corrie Lynn Green discovered her breast cancer thanks to a night out with friends celebrating their 40th birthdays. By getting mammograms together, she was able to receive early intervention and treatment, underscoring the importance of preventive care and the support of loved ones.

We are also incredibly grateful to the Showalter family and the entire community for their generous support of the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic. The story on page 25 outlines the services that will be available at the clinic, which has been designed to carefully address patients’ physical, emotional, social, and practical needs.

With the community’s continued financial backing, the clinic will assist patients along their cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery. What a comfort it will be for families to know their loved one is receiving thoughtful, specialized treatment that respects them as a person, not just a patient. It will also extend services such as cancer prevention screenings, medication and travel support, personalized counseling, and comfort supplies.

We have so much to be thankful for. As we look forward to the new year, let us pause and reflect on our compassion for each other and our shared gratitude. May 2025 be filled with health, happiness, and cherished moments with loved ones.

No One Wants a Smooshed Chicken

I

am a creature of habit, and I always shop at the same grocery store. There’s even a cashier I like. If I see him working, I’ll make a beeline for his register because he’s friendly and very efficient, getting folks through quickly.

On a recent shopping trip, the store met all my needs: It wasn’t super busy, it had all the items on my list (all $200 of them), and the staff members I encountered were friendly. But at the end of the checkout process, things went mildly … sideways.

My favorite clerk was so fast at checkout that he was ready for me to pay before I had even gotten all the bagged groceries back into my cart.

So, I stopped loading to pay. Then, as I was fumbling with my wallet and getting the last of my groceries into the cart (including all the “awkward” items, like a gallon of milk, a pack of Gatorade and a hot rotisserie chicken I didn’t want smooshed), my cashier had already checked out and bagged up the next person in line (she had very few things) … and I was in everyone’s way.

The experience left me with the feeling of being rushed out the door for the sake of the next customer — and concerns over a potentially smooshed chicken.

Sigh.

Health care is a bit more complex than grocery shopping (I write that with a chuckle), and a hospital can certainly be a challenging environment to navigate. Emotions can run high as patients await test results, experience a longerthan-expected emergency room wait, or feel overwhelmed by confusing medical terms and diagnoses. Regardless, the customer experience should still be the priority. Was our team kind and compassionate? Were you able to get what you needed?

Was the process smooth and efficient from start to finish?

Our team at Sentara RMH Medical Center is always here to put you first. Whether in person or via telemedicine, we always want you to leave your appointment feeling cared for and valued — and we never want you to walk away feeling anxious about something like my anecdotal smooshed chicken. In fact, we hope you will let us know if we have not delivered the exceptional care you expect — and unconditionally deserve.

So, was my unsettling experience at the grocery store a deal-breaker for me? Absolutely not.

In fact, my family enjoyed that delicious chicken for dinner. I will be back next week, at the same time, with my list in hand.

New CommunityFunded Mammography Unit to Improve Patient Access to Care

T

hrough generous community support of the RMH Foundation, a new mammography machine was dedicated recently at Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center. With this new unit, the center now has four mammography systems, in addition to its mobile mammography van. The new system will improve access to care for patients, reduce wait times for screening, and help optimize staff workflow.

In 2023, the Women’s Center performed 12,287 screening mammograms and 2,707 diagnostic mammograms. From those screenings, 72 patients were diagnosed with breast cancer.

“The Funkhouser Women’s Center Imaging Department is dedicated to providing annual screening 3D mammography to all the women of our community in a timely fashion,” says Emily Turzanski, DO, a breast surgeon at the Women’s Center. “This additional 3D mammography suite gives us the opportunity to provide more mammograms and expand access to care.”

Reducing wait times for diagnostic mammograms is particularly beneficial for patients. Any time a patient is asked to return for a rescreening to determine whether or not something “suspicious” in an initial mammography requires further action, the wait for a follow-up appointment can be quite stressful. The new mammography unit will allow many patients to receive rescreening appointments the same day or the next day.

“The fourth 3D mammogram suite will enable us to offer more women follow-up diagnostic imaging within one to two days of their original annual screening exam, when warranted,” Dr. Turzanski adds. “This is ideal, as we would prefer to move forward with diagnostic imaging as soon as possible for all our patients.”

The total cost of the mammography unit and required renovations totaled more than $600,000. The lead gift for the project came from the Fred O. Funkhouser Charitable Foundation. Through a $420,000 gift, the Funkhouser family extended the legacy of support they have provided to this community — and without their gift, this project would not have been possible.

The remaining funds were raised through two other efforts: • The community responded to a challenge grant with an additional $167,351.30 given.

• Sentara’s Be an Angel for Breast Cancer representatives, Paul Riner and Steven Faught, advocated for this project throughout the month of October 2022, helping to raise an additional $25,136.18 through a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign.

“The heart of this project is about improving access to lifesaving screenings and care,” says Cory Davies, executive director of the RMH Foundation. “Having same-day access to screening and diagnostic mammograms is truly exceptional and illustrates the life-changing impact that donations can have. On behalf of our patients who benefit, we are indelibly grateful for the Funkhouser family’s leadership support and the many other generous donors who made this possible.”

Better Sleep, Better Memory, Better Health Fouzia Siddiqui, FCPS, MD, FAAN

T

he idea that sleep is vital to our well-being is well established. But what, exactly, is sleep? Why is it so important?

And how can we improve it?

Sleep is the natural, easily reversible periodic state of many living things that is marked by the absence of wakefulness and the loss of consciousness of one’s surroundings. It is usually accompanied by a typical body posture (e.g., lying down with closed eyes), dreaming, and 6 |

changes in brain activity and physiological functioning. And although our physical state may be quiet during sleep, our brains are very active, as several processes work to restore and recover various functions, helping to prepare the mind and body for the next day.

The amount of sleep a person needs depends on various factors—particularly one’s age. While sleep needs vary significantly among individuals, below are general guidelines for different age groups:

A good night’s sleep restores whole-body function and helps us perform better, mentally and physically, throughout the day. Proper rest is critical for our brains to grow, reorganize, restructure, and make new neuronal connections— connections that help us learn new information, form new memories during sleep, and consolidate information learned

during the day. As a result, a good night’s sleep can lead to better problem-solving and decision-making skills. Several studies also have proven the effects of good sleep on our mood, attention, focus, and ability to concentrate.

Conversely, chronic lack of sleep can lead to mood disorders like anxiety, depression, irritability, and anger, as well as problems thinking clearly, forming memories, learning new materials, and functioning optimally during the daytime.

In fact, getting five hours or less of sleep per night can have a dramatic negative impact on our ability to think quickly, make good decisions, and perform tasks accurately.

Cardiovascular Health and Diabetes

Quality sleep is also good for the heart and cardiovascular system. Poor-quality sleep, on the other hand, predisposes us to hypertension, heart disease, heart failure, and cardiac rhythm abnormalities. Sleeping 7 hours or more a night also helps regulate blood sugar.

Without enough sleep, the body’s resistance to insulin increases, leading to too much sugar in the bloodstream. Notably, adults who get less than 7 hours of sleep a night tend to be at increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

Memory issues During sleep, your brain forms connections that help you process and remember new information. A lack of sleep can negatively impact both short- and long-term memory.

Mood changes Sleep deprivation can make you moody, emotional and quicktempered. Chronic sleep deprivation can affect your mood and lead to anxiety or depression, which may escalate.

Weakened immunity Too little sleep weakens your immune system’s defenses against viruses like those that cause the common cold and flu. You’re more likely to get sick when you’re exposed to these germs.

Risk for diabetes A lack of sleep affects your body’s release of insulin, a blood sugarlowering hormone.

People who don’t get enough sleep have higher blood sugar levels and an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

Low sex drive People who don’t get enough sleep often have a lower libido. In men, this decreased sex drive may be due to a drop in testosterone levels.

Trouble with thinking and concentration Your concentration, creativity, and problemsolving skills aren’t up to par when you don’t get enough rest.

Accidents Being drowsy during the day can increase your risk for car accidents and injuries from other causes.

High blood pressure If you sleep less than five hours a night, your risk for high blood pressure increases.

Weight gain With sleep deprivation, the chemicals that signal to your brain that you are full are off balance. As a result, you’re more likely to overindulge, even when you’ve had enough to eat.

Risk of heart disease Sleep deprivation may lead to increased blood pressure and higher levels of chemicals linked to inflammation, both of which play roles in heart disease.

Poor balance Lack of sleep can affect your balance and coordination, making you more prone to falls and other physical accidents.

Weight Management

Weight management also benefits from quality sleep, in addition to exercise, stress management, and healthy eating choices.

production of the appetite stimulant ghrelin. On nights of too little sleep, however, ghrelin production increases and leptin production decreases, leading to increased feelings of hunger.

Resistance to Infections

A good night’s sleep can even help boost your immunity and prevent several types of infections, while sleep deprivation can actually reduce the effectiveness of the body’s immune system. Chronic sleep loss can make individuals more susceptible to common infections like colds and lead to a greater risk of immunodeficiency.

Drowsy Driving

Another potential consequence of sleep deprivation is its effect on driving, including increased risk of crashes, due in part to delayed reaction times when applying brakes or changing lanes. Drivers who have had five or fewer hours of sleep in the past 24 hours are nearly twice as likely to crash.

In fact, sleep deprivation can negatively impact driving to the same extent that alcohol affects a driver who is legally drunk.

In 2017, drowsy driving was responsible for at least 91,000 crashes, 50,000 injuries, and 795 deaths in the United States.

Diagnosing and Treating Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders, which are quite common, can make it difficult to get enough quality sleep at night. Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition prevalent in adults, causes symptoms of snoring, choking, and gasping at night, as well as feeling tired or exhausted during the day. Insomnia involves difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep at night, as well as feeling tired during the day. Other sleep disorders include narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders.

These conditions are generally diagnosed by a sleep doctor, who may conduct a sleep study (either in a sleep lab or at

home) to evaluate the patient’s sleep quality. For those diagnosed with a sleep disorder, the doctor may prescribe medication or, in the case of obstructive sleep apnea, a device to keep the airway open at night. These measures can help combat sleep disorders and ensure a good night’s rest for the patient on a regular basis.

Setting Yourself Up for Good Sleep

To help you get more restorative slumber, just a few simple “sleep hygiene” measures may be able to help you correct any poor sleep habits you may have—even lifelong ones. Such measures include prioritizing sleep; creating a consistent and regular sleepwake schedule; ensuring a restful sleep environment; avoiding caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bedtime; and getting exercise during the day. Calm activities before bed like reading, meditating, praying, and taking a warm shower can also help set you up for a restful night.

On the other hand, taking digital devices to bed and looking at screens at night can actually damage our sleep and circadian rhythms. Phones, tablets, computers, and other electronics that emit blue light can disrupt the body’s natural production of the sleep hormone melatonin, making it more difficult to fall asleep.

Setting electronic devices aside— preferably out of the bedroom and for at least 30 minutes before bedtime—can make it easier to fall and stay asleep.

Everyone needs good sleep to be at their best during the day and stay healthy over the long term, so be sure to take these few simple steps to help ensure that you wake up refreshed each morning.

Hypertension

Becoming Increasingly Common

A

recent study by Sentara Health researchers offers an in-depth analysis of high blood pressure (hypertension) trends in Sentara’s patient population, which spans Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

The research, which analyzes data from the region, will help Sentara create targeted local healthcare initiatives.

“We are excited to turn our research into action that helps those who are most at risk,” says Jordan Asher, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Sentara, who was one of the study’s authors.

“This study allows us to use an asset, our data, to impact our mission of improving health every day,” Dr. Asher continues. “Moreover, it gives us critical information on health disparities in those with hypertension, which allows us to tailor our approaches to impacting the health inequities we see in Black Americans.”

Sentara researchers partnered with colleagues from the Yale School of Medicine for the paper, which was published in April 2024 in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Nationally, nearly half of all adults have hypertension. The condition, which disproportionately impacts Black communities, is a major cause of strokes, heart attacks and early deaths.

According to the Sentara study’s findings, cases of high blood pressure increased by about 5% across all groups from 2010 to 2021.

In addition, the study found that hypertension rates were 12-14% higher in non-Hispanic Black patients than in non-Hispanic white patients,

and about 7% higher in men than in women.

The results reflected national trends. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hypertension increased by about 4% nationally during a similar period, with hypertension rates 14% higher in Black patients than in white patients, and 11% higher in men than in women.

Thanks to Sentara’s extensive healthcare network, nearly 1.4 million adults were included in the study, which includes a wide spectrum of clinicians. The research used appropriate safeguards to protect patient privacy.

Tackling Health Disparities Sentara’s efforts to reduce health disparities include a recent partnership with Black faith-based communities to improve blood pressure control. In April 2024, researchers began recruiting participants from 10 Black churches in Hampton Roads, Va., to study the best way

to control high blood pressure. The $3.4 million study has a five-year timeline.

High blood pressure is linked to social and economic conditions, including education level, housing and food availability, says John Brush, MD, Sentara’s chief research officer and the lead author of the paper on hypertension.

Dr. Brush adds that it’s important for Sentara “to look at our own regional trends and disparities. The racial and socioeconomic makeup of our region is unique, and our approaches need to be uniquely tailored to our region.”

Dr. Brush also notes that because the study’s findings were measured close to home, they are a “compelling call to action.”

Sentara researchers are now analyzing associations between measures of social vulnerability and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with high blood pressure. Such measures include demographic and socioeconomic factors like poverty and crowded housing that negatively impact health. sentara.com

Mammogram Screening Guidelines Updated

to Help Save More Lives Women should now begin getting mammograms at age 40, according to updated recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).

Previous guidelines recommended that mammograms begin at age 50.

Why were the guidelines updated?

The guidelines changed in part due to rising breast cancer rates among younger women and Black women. The latest data, which span 2015-2019, show a 2% increase in breast cancer diagnoses per year among women in their 40s.

Screening starting at age 40 has the potential to save about 20% more lives from breast cancer among all women. Researchers believe the change will also save the lives of more Black women, who as a group have the highest death rate from breast cancer.

“We will detect cancers early on, when they are more treatable and curable,” says Emily Ritchie, MD, a radiologist at the Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center. “That’s huge, and we’re catching them earlier in those women as well because younger women tend to have more aggressive cancers. Black women in particular have distinct risk factors and a mortality rate that is 40% higher. So, taking that into account, we also really want women to begin at age 40.”

The updated recommendations call for more research to address health disparities across screenings and treatment experienced by Black, Hispanic, Latina, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Alaska Native women.

Who is included in the new guidelines?

The recommendations apply to cisgender women and other people assigned female at birth who are age 40

and older. They include women at average risk of breast cancer, as well as those with a family history of breast cancer and those with dense breasts.

The recommendation does not apply to people who: • Have a personal history of breast cancer • Are at very high risk of breast cancer due to certain genetic markers or a history of high-dose radiation therapy to their chest at a young age • Have had a lesion on previous biopsies These women should consult a healthcare professional for guidance about screenings.

Do the new guidelines change what will be covered by insurance?

No. Currently, most insurance companies are legally required to cover mammograms every year, starting at age 40, for women who want them.

Is there guidance for women with dense breasts?

Nearly half of all women have dense breasts, which increases their risk for breast cancer and means that mammograms may not work as well for them.

Women are generally told that they have dense breasts after they’ve had a mammogram. The USPSTF also recommends conducting more research on whether and how additional screenings, such as breast ultrasound or MRI, might improve earlier detection of cancers in women with dense breasts.

Make an appointment with your doctor. Going to the doctor isn’t just for when you feel bad—each year you should have a physical or wellness exam, which is typically covered by health insurance. Your care team will monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight, prostate and testicular health, all of which are indicators of potentially serious health conditions. Proactively taking this step could prevent future health complications, pain, and even hospital stays.

Look for small ways to improve your health. Of course, being physically active, not smoking, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are all important. But staying healthy is more complicated than checking items off a list. Identify a health aspect you could improve and then look for opportunities to take realistic steps in the right direction.

For example, if your blood pressure is high, try making small daily improvements, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator to get more exercise.

Talk to your doctor about prostate health. Even though prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers affecting men in the U.S., the 5-year survival rate for most people with prostate cancer is nearly 100% when the condition is diagnosed in the local or regional stage. Although recommendations vary, screenings generally should start at around age 45 for those at average risk.

Men Can Take Care of Their Health 5

Take mental health seriously.

Even though men in the U.S. die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women, men are diagnosed with depression and mood disorders at much lower rates than women.

Traditionally, men are less likely to seek help for mental health concerns for many reasons, including perceived societal stigma and fear of judgment.

Prioritize Your Health Connecting with your healthcare team at least once a year is an important step in prioritizing your health. Vaccinations to Protect Your Health in the Golden Years Since our immune systems weaken as we age, it’s important for adults age 50 and older to stay updated on essential vaccines to protect against preventable diseases and maintain optimal health.

The following vaccinations are recommended for adults age 50 and up:

Flu

The flu vaccine is updated annually in order to be effective against the most common strains expected to be prevalent during a given flu season.

Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. Ideally, you should be vaccinated by the end of October each year to help ensure that you are protected when flu season starts, since it takes at least two weeks for a flu shot to be effective.

COVID-19

Much like the flu vaccine, the COVID-19 vaccine is updated every 6-12 months to address the latest prevalent strains.

Whether or not you have received a COVID-19 vaccine previously, you should get periodic COVID-19 shots as they become available, to provide protection from variants currently in circulation.

Pneumococcal Conjugate (Pneumonia)

Although pneumococcal disease is common in young children, older adults are at greatest risk of serious illness and death from this infection of the lungs. Pneumococcal bacteria are the main cause of pneumonia in adults, and the vaccine is designed to protect against many variants of these types of infections. Adults 65 and older should receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, if they have not already done so. Two shots given after age 65 should cover you for your lifetime.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

While RSV typically causes coldlike symptoms, the virus is much more likely to become serious in older adults. Adults at highest risk for severe RSV infection include older adults, adults with chronic heart or lung disease, adults with weakened immune systems, adults with certain other underlying medical conditions, and adults living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

Shingles

If you’ve ever had chickenpox (even as a child), the virus that caused it still lives dormant (inactive) in your body. However, the virus can reactivate years later, causing a painful condition known as shingles.

Impacting nerves, shingles causes uncomfortable burning, as well as a rash with blisters and itching. In addition, shingles can lead to a condition called postherpetic neuralgia that results in continued burning pain after the rash disappears.

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis

Vaccines used in the United States against diphtheria and tetanus sometimes also include protection against whooping cough or pertussis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis) vaccination for everyone.

Check with Your Care Team

You may also need other vaccines, so be sure to check with your care team. Your recommendations will be based on your personal health, whether you received or missed them as a child, whether you’ve smoked in the past, whether you will be around children and infants, and other factors. Some vaccines carry a risk, so your care team will work with you to determine whether or not a particular vaccine is right for you.

Records

Staying up to date on vaccinations and keeping accurate vaccination records are both crucial to protecting yourself and your loved ones from preventable diseases.

Why Keep Vaccination Records Updated?

Your vaccination history helps your healthcare team determine which vaccines you’ve received, when you received them, and whether you may need boosters or additional vaccinations. Vaccination records are also a critical component for entry into new communities, such as a new school for a child or a new job as an adult.

How to Maintain Vaccination Records

There are several different ways to keep track of your vaccination records.

1. Electronic medical records: Many healthcare providers now offer electronic records that are accessible through portals like Sentara MyChart.

2. Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS): In 2022, a new vaccine-reporting mandate went into effect in Virginia that requires all healthcare providers who administer vaccines to participate in the VIIS, a free statewide registry system that combines immunization histories for persons of all ages. For records of vaccines received outside Virginia, contact the local health department in that area. The National Association of County and City Health Officials offers an online directory of health departments in the United States at naccho.org/membership/lhd-directory.

3. Paper copies: It may feel a bit “old school,” but keeping physical copies of vaccination records can be a good way to complement electronic records. Paper copies can be particularly useful for situations, such as school registrations, that require immediate proof.

Titer Testing

If a vaccination record is unavailable, a titer test can help provide the documentation a school or workplace may require. The titer blood test measures the amount of

antibodies in your blood, indicating your level of immunity to a given disease. These tests help determine: • If you need a booster vaccine • If a vaccine you received helped protect you against that specific disease • If you have had a recent or past infection

Booster Vaccines

For some vaccines, such as the one for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), you may want to talk with your care team about taking a titer test and getting a booster shot, if needed.

“Someone born before 1957 was likely infected with these illnesses during childhood.

This means they are probably protected,” explains Melissa Farley, clinical manager for employee occupational health at Sentara. “But if they’re not sure about their history, or if they work in health care, are around infants who may not yet be vaccinated for MMR, or are in a community that has experienced an outbreak, it’s a good idea to get a titer test to check their level of immunity.”

Serendipitous Mammogram

Leads to Musical Journey Music and the mountains have been a part of Corrie Lynn Green’s life from a young age. A cancer diagnosis at age 40 would lead her to rediscover the melodies of her childhood.

Music in Her Veins

Corrie’s family used to host bluegrass jams at their Elkton, Va., home every Friday night when she was a teenager. Her mother and stepfather were musicians, and the evenings were filled with stories and songs of mountain life.

Corrie watched but didn’t join in—she didn’t play music, and she didn’t think she could sing.

“As a teen, I sort of hated it because it was bluegrass music, and that was not what I was into at all,” she says. Instead, she wrote grunge songs for her friends.

“But even though I sort of rejected the bluegrass music, it was definitely a part of me and in me.”

Wine and a Cancer Diagnosis

Corrie eventually married, and she and her husband, Chris, had a daughter.

They moved to Port Republic, Va., and she opened a massage therapy business.

Then came a beautiful fall day in November 2017, when Corrie and a group of nine friends were celebrating at CrossKeys Vineyards in Mt. Crawford, Va. They had all turned 40 or were about to reach that milestone. One of them had booked the Sentara RMH mobile mammography van so they could all get their first mammograms together.

“I hadn’t scheduled my mammogram, so it was the perfect motivation to have someone else say we should do this,” Corrie remembers. “I didn’t have a care in the world. I didn’t have any worries. I was super athletic at the time and really healthy. I think we all felt good about the fact that we were doing it.

We were checking off the box.”

At 8:30 the next morning, her phone rang. It was the hospital calling to say she needed to come in for an ultrasound right away. The ultrasound results led to a biopsy and a breast cancer diagnosis.

While the cancer hadn’t spread to the lymph nodes, it was in nearby veins. Corrie needed a lumpectomy to remove the tumor and four lymph nodes, followed by 16 rounds of chemotherapy and 36 rounds of radiation.

“They wanted to make sure that we did everything we could to stop it in its tracks,” she says.

“Corrie had an aggressive form of breast cancer,” says nurse practitioner and Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center breast surgery specialist Victoria Krauss, MSN, FNP-C. “The medical team worked together to devise a tailored treatment plan that followed the latest research and evidence-based practice for treating Corrie’s specific type of breast cancer.”

The surgery went smoothly, but chemotherapy was challenging, and Corrie had some reactions and infections. However, the atmosphere at the Sentara RMH infusion center buoyed her. “The chemotherapy unit was the heart because the nurses that work there were just so amazing, and they were so caring,” she says.

Her fellow patients also inspired her. “You’re sitting side by side with all these other people going through the same thing,” she adds. “It’s a special bond. There is a lot of love and encouragement.”

Learning to Be Alive

Once she got past her initial grief from the cancer diagnosis, Corrie says she surrendered to the experience. “What you can learn is how to be alive in the moment, how to be alive while you’re getting 16 |

“I make sure I tell my friends and family that I love them.” chemotherapy, how to check in with yourself and be grateful for every day and every little bit of sun that hits you in the face,” she explains. “I make sure I tell my friends and family that I love them.

“Every moment since I’ve gotten past the treatment program has been a moment of pure joy and presence, and I have not made decisions based on fear since then. It’s only: What do you want to try? What do you want to do? What do you feel like failing at? What do you want to try to succeed at?”

She takes daily medication to reduce the risk that the cancer might return. She still has worries, though.

Sentara RMH offers free counseling for cancer patients, and that has helped her. “I still get scared, but I am able to deal with that and not have it linger over me and follow me around into my life,” Corrie says.

Returning to Her Roots

As Corrie moved forward, she returned to her musical roots and began writing songs. “I needed a place to put all that energy and all that angst, and I started to write like my life depended on it,” she remembers. She picked up the banjo and started playing and sharing her songs—a blend of folk, Americana, and bluegrass—with family and friends. They are stories of life in the mountains, healing, joy, heartbreak, and cancer.

“I sort of let myself rise up with these songs and also find a new pathway,” she explains.

Corrie won a raffle for a recording session in Harrisonburg and eventually put those songs on YouTube.

A friend who knew a music producer in Philadelphia heard the songs, and the producer got in touch to see if Corrie wanted to record some demos.

“I was scared, and I didn’t think I was ready, but I said yes because that’s what I vowed to do with my life,” she says. Her debut album, “Blow Away,” was released in 2022. She’s played shows and festivals around the country and earned multiple songwriting awards, including one from the Tucson Folk Festival.

Corrie recently released her third album in three years, “Time to Be Brave,” and she thinks it’s her life’s work.

“I put my whole self into every project,” she says, “singing with total abandon in front of a crowd—even though I have stage fright—because what is there to be afraid of if you survived? There’s just nothing to be afraid of.”

Advocating for Early Detection

Corrie visits the Sentara RMH survivorship clinic every six months for imaging and breast exams.

“Our visits are more than just speaking about surveillance and her history,” says physician assistant Jessana Hendricks, PA-C. “We often sit for a few moments and catch up on life, including her music career, her family, and her current sources of stress.

Her health is multifaceted, and so is my approach to her surveillance.”

While Corrie did that first mammogram at the winery out of a sense of responsibility, she now uses her voice to advocate for early detection. She has been a spokesperson for the RMH Foundation, helping to raise funds for new mammography machines, and a spokesperson for the Relay for Life, a cancer charity walk.

“If you can catch it early, you can escape an ending you don’t want,” Corrie says. “I was 40 years old, and I walked onto a van, and it saved my life.”

Two weeks into a throbbing headache and the onset of double vision, Mark McGranahan of Harrisonburg, Va., turned to his primary care provider at Sentara Integrative Medicine Physicians for some relief.

Because McGranahan’s neck was so stiff, his doctor first prescribed muscle relaxants to settle the inflamed areas and, hopefully, give him some respite from the pain. The headaches persisted through the end of the week, though, and he was still experiencing double vision.

“I began to see a little blurry,” remembers McGranahan, 47, a sales manager at Shenandoah Bicycle Company in Harrisonburg. “I got a brain MRI, and that’s when I found out I had a blood clot.”

His primary care provider immediately sent him to the Sentara RMH Medical Center Emergency Department, where McGranahan met with neurohospitalist Karoly Varga, MD. As McGranahan’s care progressed at Sentara, Zsofia Varga Hole, MD—Dr. Varga’s daughter, who is also a neurologist with Sentara Neurology Specialists in Harrisonburg—joined the care team. McGranahan’s case was not the first time the two had worked together to care for a patient.

“We have worked with patients where my dad initially meets them in the hospital, and then they follow up with me as an outpatient,” says Dr. Hole. “Or it can be the other way around, where a patient starts as

an outpatient and then gets admitted to the hospital.

It’s not uncommon for them to see me again and say, ‘Your dad took care of me in the hospital.’”

A Family Tradition

Growing up in Hungary, Dr. Varga veered from the path of becoming an engineer like his father. Instead, he paved the way for many family members to follow.

Dr. Varga wanted a career where he could tangibly help people, and the idea of working in medicine piqued his interest.

“I was the first in my family to choose to be a doctor,” says Dr. Varga, 70, who is now easing into retirement while still working part time at Sentara RMH. “Now I’ve started a tradition. Many of my nieces and nephews are doctors—in internal medicine, orthopedics, primary care, and urology—and my daughter is a neurologist.”

“It was then that I focused on neurology,” Dr. Varga explains. “I completed my residency in neurology and ultimately set up a private practice in West Virginia.”

Learning by Example

Dr. Hole, also born in Hungary, says her parents, both physicians, inspired her career choice. Her maternal grandfather was also a medical doctor.

“I guess it runs in the blood,” adds Dr. Hole, who lives in McGaheysville, Va., with her husband, Sean, and their four children. “I always had it in the back of my mind, but I didn’t decide to pursue it until college, when I majored in biology on the premed track at Virginia Tech.”

Upon graduating from Virginia Tech, Dr. Hole was accepted into the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine. After receiving her medical degree, she completed her neurology residency and fellowship in electrodiagnostic medicine, also at UVA.

Eight Suitcases and a Dream

Dr. Varga and his wife, Maria, started their careers in Hungary. Dr. Varga, who was board-certified in internal medicine, also immersed himself in research. He defended his Ph.D. thesis in cardiovascular regulation by the central nervous system, which coincided with an opening for a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Rockville, Md. “I moved here with my wife, two young daughters, and eight suitcases,” recalls Dr. Varga. “It was really a scary, exciting, and adventurous time.”

Dr. Varga focused on research at the NIH in Rockville and at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., but deeply missed patient care. He and Maria concluded that, due to their daughters’ young ages, only one should get a medical license in the United States.

While visiting her parents in West Virginia, Dr. Hole took note of her dad’s work ethic.

“He worked extremely hard and was very committed to his job,” says Dr. Hole. “He worked very long hours in his private practice as a hospital consultant and teaching neurology at West Virginia University School of Medicine. It was sometimes hard to see, but I could tell how much he loved his job and how rewarding it was to help others.”

By the time Dr. Hole completed her medical training in neurology at UVA, her older sister Krisztina had earned a Ph.D. in early child development and joined the faculty at James Madison University. This contributed to Dr. Hole’s decision to apply for a position nearby at Sentara RMH. With their daughters in Virginia, the Vargas left West Virginia and joined the rest of their family in the Harrisonburg area. Dr. Hole began working for Sentara in 2015 as a neurologist, and Dr. Varga joined Sentara in 2016 as a neurohospitalist, following in his daughter’s footsteps.

Pooling Information

Almost a decade later, Drs. Varga and Hole combined their efforts to treat McGranahan, as they have with many other patients.

Looking more closely at his MRI, Dr. Varga noted that in addition to the blood clot, McGranahan was losing cerebral spinal fluid.

“There was very low pressure in his brain, causing all the symptoms,” Dr. Varga explains.

While he was being treated at Sentara RMH, McGranahan appreciated Dr. Varga’s comforting bedside manner and the thoroughness with which he explained his condition.

“Without all its fluid, the brain sags, and that was pulling on nerves,” McGranahan says. “A vein flattening caused the blood clot. My brain was putting pressure on the optic nerve, which is why I had double vision.”

Both Drs. Varga and Hole shifted gears to expedite McGranahan’s paperwork and imaging and get him treated at Duke University Medical Center, which is one of just a few hospitals in the nation that treat this type of cranial cerebral spinal fluid leak. sentara.com

“I give Dr. Varga so much credit because he put the bits and pieces of information together and recognized what condition I was facing,” McGranahan explains. “He was thorough, attentive, and curious.”

Drs. Varga and Hole say staying current with the latest techniques and specialty care is critical to their role as doctors. Because of their quick action, McGranahan was seen at Duke within a few weeks.

“My doctor at Duke said sometimes people suffer for months and years before someone diagnoses the true problem,” McGranahan says. “He was impressed that I got into the program so fast, because of the hard work of my doctors at Sentara.”

Rocky Road to Recovery

Imaging and exams at Duke found that a calcified disk in McGranahan’s neck had punctured the dura, a protective sheath around the spine. This caused his cerebral spinal fluid leak.

The first step, a blood patch to plug the hole, initially worked, but the symptoms returned a week later. He traveled back to Duke, where a neurosurgeon shaved the calcification down and wrapped the area to ensure a smooth surface.

Unfortunately, though, his journey didn’t end there. A week after his surgery, while in bed recovering at home, he experienced excruciating pain and then 30 minutes of paralysis from the waist down. He returned to the emergency room at Sentara RMH. Again, Sentara neurologists and the emergency team coordinated with Duke for McGranahan to return for care. Once his condition finally stabilized at Duke, he was able to return home to Virginia to recover.

“I would not be where I am today without Drs. Varga and Hole,” McGranahan notes. “So many departments at Sentara worked together to ensure I got the care I needed. You must often be your own advocate, but I felt like those who cared for me at Sentara took it upon themselves to put me in the best hands possible the whole way through.”

Compassionate Care

Now that his partial retirement is underway, Dr. Varga has time to pursue his hobbies: reading, listening to music, playing tennis and pickleball, doing yardwork, and working out at his home gym. He and his wife relish their time with their six grandchildren.

“What makes a good doctor?” Dr. Varga asks.

“We doctors all graduated from medical school and have proven we are book-smart. The difference is bedside manner, empathy, and how much you care about your patients. That is the hallmark of a good provider.

“As a proud father,” he continues, “I can see all these features in my daughter.”

When she’s not at work, Dr. Hole enjoys watching her kids play soccer and ride horses, among other family activities. She is grateful to carry on the family tradition of medicine. Although her kids are young, one of her daughters has already expressed an interest in medicine. Another is fascinated by the intricacies of the brain, even watching educational videos to learn more.

“My dad has been a role model for me in many ways, including as a compassionate physician and a supportive parent,” Dr. Hole adds. “In getting to work side by side with him these past eight years, I have learned things from him that couldn’t be found in medical textbooks or journals.”

PHILANTHROPY

A Personal Connection to The establishment of the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic is a community-driven effort. The RMH Foundation’s Leadership Council, co-chaired by Teresa and Devon Anders, is championing the clinic’s vision, working tirelessly to bring this resource to the community. The council’s commitment underscores a shared belief that no one should face cancer alone. Its members are actively engaged in fundraising, advocacy, and shaping the clinic’s mission to provide personalized, supportive care that meets the unique needs of local patients.

One of the council’s members, Paul Riner, knows the toll cancer can take on a loved one and family. After a year-long fight with cancer, Paul’s mother, Sandra Wine Riner, died in 2014 at the age of 62.

“If you’ve had a friend or family member go through cancer, you understand the incredible need for a supportive care clinic,” Paul says. “In other cases, you really need to explain to people the necessity of a supportive care clinic that caters as much to the treatment of the person as it does the treatment of the cancer. The two are very important not to separate.”

Paul explains that before her passing, Sandy Riner expressed how thankful she was for the support she received at Sentara RMH Hahn Cancer Center.

“The care she received locally allowed her to travel, spend time with friends and family, and truly enjoy that last year of her life,” Paul shares.

Supportive Care

In three years of fundraising for the RMH Foundation, Paul has raised more than $100,000 for cancer care.

“The Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic will be a sanctuary of compassion and resilience,” says Cory Davies, executive director of the RMH Foundation. “For those facing cancer, this clinic will be a lifeline — a place where the journey is not walked alone, but is surrounded by care that sees and serves the whole person. It is deeply inspiring to witness how our community has come together, with leaders like Paul and our entire Leadership Council, and so many others sharing their hearts to make this vision a reality.”

Paul says the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic is immensely important to the community, and to him personally.

“Our people — every one of them locally — need our help to get the best possible cancer care,” he explains. “This means care before, during, and after a cancer diagnosis. If you know someone who has beaten cancer, you know that the journey only begins when the bell is rung.

“There is sometimes a lifetime of follow up, anxiety, loss of mobility, and impairment of immune responses that accompany beating cancer,” Paul continues. “These patients are also many times more likely to face a second or third cancer diagnosis.

They deserve our best care, and this clinic at Sentara RMH Medical Center, launched by the RMH Foundation, will give them that.”
