Caring Tradition Our
A Publication of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital

It’s a true privilege to introduce myself as the new president of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. As I begin this chapter, I do so with deep respect for the legacy of this hospital and a strong personal connection to the region. My family has roots in the Virginia Piedmont, and we’ve witnessed firsthand the lasting impact of the Caring Tradition. I am honored to now be part of a place that means so much to so many.
Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that the heart of any hospital is its people. What makes a hospital truly exceptional is the way its staff and physicians show up every day—with compassion, skill, and a calling to serve others. I see that spirit clearly at Sentara Martha Jefferson, and I’m excited to work alongside this remarkable team to carry forward a legacy of kindness, excellence, and community trust.
The theme of this edition— Advancing Health through Innovation and Community Support—perfectly captures the spirit of the work already happening at Sentara Martha Jefferson. From the creative partnerships with UVA that are expanding pediatric behavioral
health services to investments like the upcoming YMCA Early Learning Center at Sentara Martha Jefferson and our new Community Health & Outreach Center, it’s clear this team is deeply committed to meeting the needs of our community in bold, compassionate ways. I’m honored to join this work and look forward to building on this strong foundation, supporting future initiatives that expand access, deepen relationships, and deliver care that is not only clinically excellent but grounded in the deeply personal touch that defines the Caring Tradition.
I also want to thank our generous supporters. In 2024 alone, community philanthropy through the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation made it possible to provide nearly 1,000 free health programs, invest in our caregivers, and support patients through free cancer screenings, free wigs, and other services for women experiencing cancer. That support extends far beyond the hospital walls—it helps knit a stronger, healthier community. From training the next generation of healthcare workers to caring for our most vulnerable neighbors, your

generosity powers the work we do every day. Your support is not just appreciated; it is essential.
I look forward to listening, learning, and leading with the same sense of purpose that defines Sentara Martha Jefferson. Together, we will continue to honor the Caring Tradition—and advance it in new and meaningful ways.
Warmly,
E. Bernard Boone, III, FACHE President,

Recognizing the urgent need for behavioral health services for children in our region, Sentara Martha Jefferson and UVA Health have teamed up to open the UVA Health Children’s Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Health Clinic directly off Route 29 in northern Albemarle County. The one-of-a-kind center is the only outpatient clinic in Virginia that combines the expertise of developmental pediatricians, pediatric psychologists, and psychiatrists in one facility and includes integrative medicine. In addition to traditional therapies, the clinic offers complete mind-body practices, including yoga, nutrition, and sleep health. The clinic accepts both private insurance and Medicaid to help expand access for low-income and underserved children.

Congratulations to Jacob Young, MD, a neurosurgeon at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital and winner of the Arthur Bender Quality Award. The award recognizes a physician on the medical staff of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital who has provided outstanding service to our community, improving the quality of care we offer our patients. Thank you to Dr. Young for his many years of exceptional, compassionate care for our community!
Construction is well underway on the new YMCA Early Learning Center at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, which will improve access to affordable, high-quality childcare for our team members, while ensuring continued access to healthcare for our patients.
Childcare remains a critical challenge for many Sentara Martha Jefferson team members, especially for younger members of the team just starting in their careers. The new Early Learning Center tackles that challenge by serving 148 children ages infant to kindergarten; Sentara
Sentara Martha Jefferson is proud to have earned a ranking as the #6 best hospital in Virginia from Newsweek. Our maternity care also earned recognition as “high-performing” from U.S. News & World Report, along with procedures in orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, and oncology. Thank you to our caregiving teams for their steadfast commitment to excellence in patient care, and to our community, whose gifts of gratitude through the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation enabled us to invest $3 million in hospital programs last year to improve health for all.
staff will have priority enrollment, and tuition will be assessed on a sliding scale. The center will have eight dedicated classrooms, plus outdoor classrooms and play spaces. Nutritious meals and snacks will be provided. Ensuring that our team is here to care for our community while their children remain close and safe means that our staff is work-ready, and their children are school-ready. The Center is slated to open in early 2026.

Sentara Martha Jefferson caregivers from the Main Operating Room and Outpatient Surgery Center brought the caring tradition to Bolivia recently, volunteering their skill and expertise to provide life-changing surgeries free-of-charge to 53 people living in extreme poverty in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Kaitlin Young, BSN, RN, CNOR; Brett Philpott, RN; Misty Philpott, RN, MSN, CNOR; and Cheree Hansen, BSN, RN; along with Dr. Andy Murphy and Dr. Don Mathes from the anesthesia team traveled to the eastern Bolivian state of Santa Cruz with Mission of Hope Bolivia. The Charlottesville-based non-profit provides free medical care to severely under-resourced communities in Santa Cruz and the Quechua Indian community of Sucre. Over the course of five days, the Sentara Martha Jefferson team performed a range of procedures, including general and gynecological surgery. Their efforts brought urgently needed relief from chronic, disabling pain to people struggling to access care. We are so proud of our caregivers for expanding our community of care all the way to Bolivia!
The Women’s Committee of Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation raised a remarkable $152,965 in 2024 to fight cancer and support women’s health. Generous sponsors and community members once again turned out in force for the 22nd Annual In The Pink Tennis and Pickleball Charity Event and the 31st Annual Martha’s Market. The funds helped to purchase a MOLLI surgical navigation device to support breast cancer surgeons, as well as the Cancer Resource Center, Marianne’s Room, support programs for cancer survivors, and yarn for the Caring Embrace knitters (see story below).
The 2025 TWC event season is well underway, and there are plenty of opportunities to join the fight against breast cancer here at home. Mark your calendar to join us for the 23rd Annual In The Pink Tennis and Pickleball Charity Event on October 3 and 4 at clubs around town, and the 32nd Annual Martha’s Market at the Dairy Market, Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Visit MJHFoundation.org/TWC to learn more about upcoming events and get involved to support women’s health.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Sentara Martha Jefferson’s Caring Embrace program, which provides hand-knitted shawls for patients, as well as handmade caps for newborn babies. Our wonderful volunteer knitters and crocheters have donated more than 5,000 shawls to wrap cancer and palliative patients in warmth and care, while also providing caps for newborn babies. The group knits together regularly at the hospital, for many years led by the late Josephine “Mama Jo” Bettinger, who sadly died last year at 94. Mama Jo
helped charter the group and knitted at least 700 shawls.
The Women’s Committee of Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation has provided all yarn for the group, using funds raised from the community through TWC events, such as Martha’s Market and In the Pink. The handknitted shawls truly mean the world to patients, and the baby caps become keepsakes for generations. Thank you to our knitters and community for bringing the caring tradition to life through this extraordinary program.
Cardiovascular disease touches all our lives. It is the leading cause of death nationwide, claiming the life of one in four Americans every year. It comes in many forms, but the most common is coronary artery disease, which is a narrowing or blockage of the arteries that feed blood to the heart muscle.
“It’s essentially a plumbing problem,” says David Cook, MD, a Sentara Martha Jefferson cardiologist. Plaque—a sticky mix of cholesterol, fat, and other substances—builds up in the coronary arteries, blocking blood flow to the heart and causing chest pain, heart attacks, and other complications. Plaque can also rupture in the arteries, precipitating a heart attack.
So what causes plaque buildup? Dr. Cook points to a mix of risk factors, some controllable, some not. Genetics, age, and ethnicity play a role, along with a healthy diet, exercise, stress management, and other lifestyle choices.
“Coronary artery disease is potentially preventable,” he says. “If you know your risk factors and make healthy lifestyle choices, most people can keep their arteries healthy over time. An ounce of prevention goes a very long way.”
Smoking is a huge independent risk factor for coronary artery disease and strokes. If you’ve tried to quit and been unsuccessful, talk to your doctor. We have many treatment strategies, and it’s so important to heart health.
Physical activity is essential. It’s ok to start small. Just getting out and walking 10 minutes a day will make a difference. As a general target, we
recommended most people try to work up to 150 minutes of moderate exercise, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, weekly. Choose something you enjoy so it’s easier to stick to it.
The Mediterranean diet is shown to be the most helpful, and we recommend incorporating the basic principles, even if you don’t follow the diet exactly. Try to get most of your calories from fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, nuts, and beans. Choose fish and chicken more often than red meat. Think of meats and cheeses as seasonings, rather than the main course. Replace butter with olive oil because it has so many healthy fats.
Work with your doctor to manage diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure, as all of these conditions can contribute to plaque buildup. Some people will also need medication to reach target cholesterol goals. If heart disease runs in your family, talk with your doctor about simple tests you can do to determine your risk, such as a cardiac CT scan or cholesterol tests beyond the standard lipid panel. Many are covered by insurance and very reliable.

Whether you’re trying to prevent heart disease or recover after a cardiovascular event, Sentara Martha Jefferson’s Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab program is a time-tested approach to stop inflammation and disease progression. From a dietary perspective, the program emphasizes limiting total and saturated fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars, while eating more beneficial fiber.
While some fat sources can be healthy, the Pritikin program suggests very small amounts of oil—1 teaspoon per 1,000 calories for healthy weight management. Focus on canola, olive and avocado oils, and omit added fat whenever possible. Use herbs, salt-free spices and seasonings, vinegars, and lemon or lime juice to pack a flavor punch to dishes.
For overall health, the program also encourages aerobic exercise, resistance training, and flexibility training, as well as stress management. Following these guidelines is a great place to start, no matter where you are on your heart health journey.

“We often tell patients to ‘know your numbers,’ but too often people tell me that they really don’t understand their blood pressure readings, BMI assessments, or A1C scores,” shares Setour Dillard, RN, and community nurse at the newly expanded Sentara Martha Jefferson Community Health and Outreach Center.
“My goal is to create personalized wellness plans to meet the unique needs of each individual and empower them to set goals, track their progress, and have access to the resources they need to get healthier. Sometimes that means a weightloss program, changing one’s diet, or better understanding medications. I want patients to see me as a guide who is their greatest cheerleader and a part of their team,” she adds.
Located in the Sentara Martha Jefferson Downtown Outpatient Care Center at 920 E. High Street, Charlottesville, this free health and wellness center offers chronic disease management classes and free health screenings to help individuals take charge of their health. Additionally, CPR courses are available to equip individuals with life-saving skills that benefit the community as a whole.
In collaboration with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, a food pantry in the center provides patients with nutritious food while addressing food insecurity needs. “In many ways, I truly believe healthcare starts in the kitchen, which is why I am excited about our new Food Pharmacy,” adds Dillard. She helps patients “shop” for foods they like, or would like to try, and provides them with healthy recipes and tips to reduce salt and fat intake while still making tasty meals.
With the goal of offering fully integrated care, mental health counseling is also available in the center in collaboration with The Women’s Initiative.
“We donated counseling space to The Women’s Initiative at our original location in the Jefferson School, and when we started making plans to expand and move into the Sentara Martha Jefferson Downtown Outpatient Care Center, we made a commitment to continue this partnership. In fact, we’ve expanded their counseling spaces from two to three rooms,” commented Tameka Irving, Manager of SMJH Community Benefit.
Made possible by the generous support of Sentara Health and our community through the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, the center is committed to providing these services free of charge, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthier life.

For Jenny Sisk, losing weight had always felt like a battle, one she fought for more than 25 years. Her journey probably sounds familiar to others who also struggle with managing their weight.
Jenny, 54, tried Weight Watchers (twice), the Atkins diet, gym memberships and countless other weight loss programs. Each time, she lost weight, only to regain it later. She understood why she had trouble keeping the weight off, but it didn’t translate into a permanent solution.
“Consistency was tough,” Jenny admits. “I like to eat! My husband is a fantastic cook. And growing up, food wasn’t always available, so when it was, it felt like a treat.”
The turning point
Jenny’s extra weight didn’t slow her down initially, but everyday activities eventually became more difficult. Her asthma, which had been manageable for years, began to slow her down.
“I didn’t realize at the time that my weight was making it harder to breathe,” she says. “I walked my dogs every night, but climbing hills left me stopping to catch my breath.”
Seeing her brother lose 70 pounds made her think about losing weight again. One day, her husband made a comment that really struck a chord.
“He said, why not consider committing to something more permanent,” says Jenny.
That’s when she began to explore having bariatric surgery.
Taking the first step
Jenny attended a Sentara weight loss information seminar led by Timothy Snow, DO, FACS, FASMBS, CAQ-MBS, director of bariatric surgery at Sentara Comprehensive Weight Loss Solutions, Charlottesville’s Metabolic and Bariatric Care Center. (Pictured on cover.) The way he talked about being overweight was a breakthrough for Jenny.
“He talked about weight as a disease, not just a matter of willpower,” she recalls. “I always felt like I should be able to do this on my own, but he explained that it’s just not that simple for some people. That helped me see surgery as a tool, not a failure of self-control.”
She began the presurgery process by meeting with a registered dietitian and learning to track her food using the Baritastic app.
“I had to be accountable,” she says. “It made me realize that this wasn’t about admitting defeat — it was about getting the help I needed, just like a diabetic taking insulin.”
After several months of insurance approvals and testing, Jenny, then 52, took a life-changing step: she underwent roboticassisted gastric sleeve surgery (see sidebar) with Dr. Snow.
Gastric sleeve surgery involves laparoscopically or minimally invasively removing approximately 75-85% of the stomach. The remaining stomach takes the shape of a tube or “sleeve” and is about the size of a banana. The procedure limits the amount of food you can eat, helping you feel full sooner while supporting normal digestion and absorption of food.
The surgery went more smoothly than she expected. “I spent one night in the hospital, and I was up and walking right away,” she says. “I took two weeks off work to adjust, but I never got sick or had any complications; it was like it was meant to be.”
Over the next 18 months, Jenny lost 130 pounds. She logs her food daily, never skipping; even her pumpkin spice latte treats go into the app. She feels healthier than ever and inspires others to take control of their health.
“I think accountability is key. You have to record everything you’re eating: good, bad, or ugly,” Jenny says.
Her asthma has improved so much that she has been able to reduce her medication twice. Everyday tasks, like doing laundry, which requires taking the steps to and from the basement, or helping her husband with home projects, are no longer a struggle. And best of all, she can now walk for hours with her dogs without getting winded.
Jenny doesn’t deprive herself. Instead, she’s made more thoughtful choices about her food. She’s switched from nightly desserts to enjoying healthier options like Greek yogurt with chocolate chips, frozen yogurt bars, or chocolatedipped bananas.
“It’s not about being perfect; it’s about making good choices most of the time,” she shares.
Jenny’s weight loss surgery success has inspired others, including a coworker who had bariatric surgery after hearing her story.
“He’s lost 80 pounds, and I love sharing tips with him,” she says. “It makes me happy to help others realize they can do this too.”
Jenny says the support she got when talking to the dietitians and counselor stayed with her even after surgery. She still actively participates in the Sentara Weight Loss Surgery Facebook group, encouraging others to stay on track.
Newly retired, Jenny enjoys long walks in the park with her dogs and feels stronger and healthier than ever.
“It’s the best decision I ever made. I wish I had done this so much sooner,” she says. “It’s life-changing.”

Shorter stays, better outcomes: how robotic-assisted surgery has helped 1,000 patients and counting
Dr. Timothy Snow relied on a sophisticated surgical tool known as the da Vinci robot to perform Jenny Sisk’s gastric sleeve surgery. As Sentara Martha Jefferson’s lead robotic surgeon, Dr. Snow is skilled in using the robot’s powerful magnifying cameras to guide tiny instruments through a small incision.
“The dexterity of the robotic instruments allows for some procedures to be performed in a minimally invasive manner, rather than through a larger, open incision,” says Dr. Snow.
Less invasive surgeries translate directly into a long list of potential benefits for patients, including less pain, lower infection rates, shorter hospital stays, smaller scars, and speedier recovery.
Tee Goyer helped lead the charge to establish the da Vinci system at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital three years ago. As operating room manager, she created a custom-designed operating space and coordinated training with surgical staff to ensure seamless support for surgeons during procedures.
Now Goyer sees the impact of the da Vinci surgical system first hand for patients as urological nurse practitioner at Sentara Medical & Surgical Associates. “We were able to recruit a urology surgeon who specializes in urological robotic surgery. It’s amazing what we can do for patients using the da Vinci robot in many of our surgical options.”
Those options run the gamut from cutting-edge treatments for prostate conditions to cancer surgeries to endometriosis and hernia repair. The hospital recently passed the 1,000th robotic surgery milestone and momentum continues to build, with surgeons performing three to four robot surgeries daily.
Dr. Snow foresees an exciting future where surgeons can consult, and perhaps even operate, from remote locations with the help of robots, dramatically expanding access to specialized procedures. For now, robotic-assisted surgery is already paying dividends for patients like Jenny Sisk, enabling them to resume their normal lives more quickly and safely. It would be hard to find a better measure of success than that.
Every year, grateful patients and friends in our community contribute more than $3 million through the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation to make our community healthier. This generous support makes possible compassionate, life-saving care and reaches beyond the hospital doors, to lessen the impact of chronic disease and improve health for all.
Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital extends our most heartfelt thanks to the individuals, foundations, and corporations listed below for their generosity in 2024. These gifts of gratitude are truly the Martha Jefferson Caring Tradition in action: all of us caring for one another, to improve the health of our community.

In 2024, the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation Board of Directors was delighted to recognize the generosity of Cynthia and Jim Stultz by naming the Learning Studio located in the new Sentara Martha Jefferson Community Health and Outreach Center (see story on page 8) in their honor.
The Learning Studio is designed to be more than a typical classroom. It is a multi-purpose space used for meetings, cooking classes, exercise programs, and even as a theater space. The Learning Studio is truly the heart of the Center, making possible free health education programs for our community.
As a life-long resident of Charlottesville who was born at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Cynthia has a particularly long history with the hospital. She and Jim have philanthropically supported the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation for more than 20 years. In addition, Cynthia is a member of the Foundation Board of Directors, having first served from 2010-2013 before rejoining the board in 2023. The Stultzs own and manage CBS Rentals, a property management and real estate development company, which they founded together in 1979.
“Jim and I are proud Martha Jefferson patients and supporters,” comments Cynthia. “We love this community, and it means the world to us to see people using the Stultz Learning Studio to take charge of their health.”

We love our volunteers! Sentara Martha Jefferson’s wonderful hospital volunteers donated 31,250 hours of service in 2024—equating to more than $1 million in value! Hospital staff and leaders honored this contribution at a festive celebration in December, and recognized Lynne Owen and Andy Anderson (pictured)—both in their ninth decade of life—as Volunteers of the Year. Thank you to all of our 323 volunteers!

It’s been a century since the Dunbar Schoolhouse, a historic Rosenwald School in southern Fluvanna County, was built, but the spirit of care and community that inspired it is alive and well—and helping to improve health for families in this rural region of our community.
That spirit was on full display in February when community members—some of whom attended school at Dunbar—turned out for a health fair in the revitalized schoolhouse. Families got free flu and COVID vaccinations, took advantage of blood pressure and diabetes screenings, picked up healthy food from a free food pantry, and cut the ribbon on a beautiful new walking trail, made possible through Sentara Cares grant funding.
Sentara Martha Jefferson sponsored the fair, in partnership with UVA, the Move2Health Equity Coalition, and Friends of the Dunbar, a local group working to bring the beloved historic schoolhouse back into productive use for the community.
In the era before school integration, Rosenwald Schools were true centers of educational opportunity
and community pride for African American communities in the rural South. With scant tax funding going to educate African American children, Rosenwald Schools filled a crucial gap, providing access to stateof-the-art facilities through an innovative funding model devised by educator Booker T. Washington and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald.
Local communities raised funds and built the schools, supported by matching grants from the Rosenwald Fund. The program was an instant success, and by the early 1930s, one in three African American children in the rural South attended a Rosenwald School.
All told, more than 5,000 Rosenwald Schools were constructed, including 382 in Virginia. Fluvanna County had six, including Dunbar. “We don’t just want this place to be a museum,” says Carmen Smith, who purchased the school a few years ago and launched Friends of the Dunbar to help restore it. “We want to continue its legacy of service in Fluvanna County.”
This vision aligns perfectly with Sentara Martha Jefferson’s commitment to partnering with local communities to improve health outcomes in rural communities like Palmyra, where the school is located. “Communities in southwest Fluvanna County are among the most at risk for diabetes and other chronic diseases,” says Jen Fleischer, program officer for the Virgina Department of Health’s Blue Ridge District,
which encompasses more than 250,000 people in Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties.
Recognizing that many of these people struggle to access care, in 2024, Sentara hosted more than 925 community health programs and events throughout the Blue Ridge Health District and online, which engaged more than 15,000 people.
These programs run the gamut from health fairs to school sports physicals to healthy food distribution. They are frequently held in community centers, like the Dunbar School in Fluvanna, or the former St. John Rosenwald School in the Cobham area located between Keswick and Gordonsville in Albemarle County. That site hosts a popular weekly exercise
class offered free to the community through support from the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation.
Following the usual Rosenwald model, St. John was constructed in 1923 with a combination of $700 in seed funding from the Rosenwald Fund, matched by contributions from the local African-American community, white neighbors, and the Albemarle County school board.
That collaborative legacy has inspired the transformation of the building into the St. John Family Life & Fitness Center, a hub for programs and resources that help participants “live a better quality of life.” In addition to the weekly exercise class, a recent Sentara Martha Jefferson Health Fair provided free health screenings and resources to more than 100 community members.
“We are still here, partnering with our neighbors to bring education for the mind, body and soul to this community,” says Rebecca Kinney, who attended elementary school at the St. John Rosenwald School and now leads the revitalization effort as chair of the board of directors. “Sentara Martha Jefferson is an important partner in this effort.”
For Sentara, partnering with local organizations like Dunbar and St. John lowers some of the most common barriers to care, such as lack of transportation. “People rely on the Jaunt bus to get to appointments, and with a limited schedule, that means arduous days lasting from early morning to late afternoon. Often, people just decide it’s not worth it, which means they aren’t going to see their doctors at all,” says Gregg Winston, a retired healthcare executive who now serves his community as cochair of the Move2HealthEquity Coalition, a local organization working to remove barriers and improve health outcomes for all.
Another challenge for many rural residents is limited access to public parks or other resources for staying active. In response, a Sentara Cares grant provided the Dunbar School with funds to purchase the lumber and gravel community volunteers needed to build the walking trail on their property. While
the trail is available to the entire community, its primary goal is to provide local seniors with a safe place to walk and socialize with friends, supporting both their physical and mental health.
“I often say ‘show me a Rosenwald School and I’ll show you where some of the greatest healthcare disparities still exist,” says Winston. “It’s time for a change and we are doing it together. Just like we did 100 years ago.”
These programs are made possible in collaboration with Sentara Health and the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation.
