Byron Silversmith is a clerk with Senior Services. He started as a temporary worker five years ago and enjoys his job very much. You may sometimes see him at the front desk, but he mainly serves as a contact for anything to do with Recreation, including signing up for events and answering questions. He is excited to see new seniors coming in for crafts and events.

“We’ve seen more seniors, I think from them interacting on Facebook and word of mouth,” said Byron. “The crafts have changed with the new coordinators and [the seniors] seem to like that and now that Tia does some interactive games before crafts, they interact more.”

Getting to know the seniors is one of the things Byron likes most about his job.

“I am one of the main people that they see. I enjoy getting to know them and sometimes they’ll call me if they have a question, even if it’s not about Recreation, because they know me and they know I will call them back with an answer,” said Byron.

Byron has a degree in Fine Arts, so he is glad his office space is in the North Annex where he can watch the seniors create. When he’s not at work, Byron likes to do a little creating of his own.

“I draw and paint in different media— stuff that is abstract, fun and colorful. It’s more like expression than worrying about technique,” said Byron. “I carry a sketch book with me wherever I go and I draw when I am bored or inspired.”

In addition to art, Byron likes listening to rock and alternative music, as well as attending concerts. The Sound of Animals Fighting, Japanese Breakfast and Bartees Strange are among his favorite groups. He also likes to collect music in all forms, including vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and even some 8 tracks.

When he’s not at home with his collection or creating art, Byron enjoys art festivals and farmers markets. If you see him here or there, say Hi.
