Coat, heater, bike, toys to S o u n d s o f C h r i s t m a s be distribution by CCSCT By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Thanks to generous donations, coats, heaters and even children's bikes will be distributed to local families this weekend. The distribution drive is part of the annual effort to make sure families have the basics to keep safe and warm this winter. It is hosted each year by the Community Council of South Central Texas and by the Seguin Print Shop which will help distribute toys to families in need. An Austin area business operated by Seguin native Joey Lopez will be contributing the bikes. Leal says the CCSCT has many great partners who not only want to prepare local families for the holidays but ensure they have the basics for the winter months that lie ahead. "We do want as many people that can come to our event and get a warm winter coat and toys and all this good stuff but of course, if there's a lot of people, we can only give out so many coats and so many heaters and bikes but we will make it work and hopefully, no kid goes home without a coat, without

a bike but we'll see what happens. We have lots of coats and we've bought heaters. Hopefully, there's enough for everyone this year," said Leal. Leal says if the parents bring the required documents, then they don't have to bring the children. Again, he says the CCSCT just wants to assist as many families as possible. "I encourage them to show up. We can tell on the award letter, the food stamps or Medicaid or Medicare of how many kids in the family. So, if they can't come, we'll just go with how many kids in the household. We can't give bikes to everyone in the household especially if there is five kids but we'll see what we can do," said Leal. Those seeking assistance with any of the following items are asked to bring a photo ID and TANF, SNAP or SS or SSI award letter for this current year. Families are encouraged to arrive early as items will be distributed while supplies last. The coats, heaters and toys will be provided from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the CCSCT offices located at 1201 W. Court St.

The Dwyer Family was among those who rang the bell during this year's Salvation Army Kettle Campaign. Cecily Dwyer and children Caylee (pictured) and Caleb Dwyer volunteered as representatives of First Presbyterian Church in Seguin. The last day for the Kettle Campaign is Christmas Eve. Local group to host toy distribution this weekend By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- A local organization is again doing its part to ensure that no child is forgotten this Christmas. Precious Life Services will be hosting its annual Christmas Toy Assistance Program this Saturday at the Seguin Public Library. The event is dubbed the "No Child Left Behind Toy Drive." Laraine Turner, of Precious Life, says the group not only helps those families that it works with year round but it serves as a safety net for those families who might have fallen through the cracks of ensuring their kids get a toy on Christmas.

"A lot of the families that do come to us, they either missed the deadline to sign-up for like Blue Santa and Toys for Tots or they can't get to where they need to go. Like Toys for Tots, you've got to go all the way to San Antonio to get toys for this area which is kind of unfortunate so we want to make sure that the ones that missed the deadline that

they still have revenue that they can go to for their children," said Turner. Although Saturday the group will be distributing toys, volunteers are still in the process of collecting toys. She says even families looking to declutter their own kids' rooms should consider giving to the non-profit organization. Turner says it's very important that toys get into every child's hands. "We are still currently accepting donations for new or gently used toys and parents can sign-up on our website or they can call our office number and we can sign them up that way or they can just come on Saturday and sign-up," said Turner. Turner says to ensure enough toys, families are encouraged to register in advance. However, she says families can still sign-up on the day of the event. "The paperwork is just to make sure that the child does belong to them because in the past, unfor-

tunately, we had people coming picking up toys and they didn't even have children. They were just getting toys for some unknown reason and we just want to make sure the child does belong to them and the child has to be present to pick out the toy. We just don't want the parents coming, picking up toys. We actually want the child to come and actually pick out a toy that they want because we'd rather have a child that is happy with what their selection is than for mom and dad to pick something that they think that the child might want," said Turner. Documents that parents need to bring include proof of residency with their name also each child's birth certificate plus a driver's license or official state ID. To register online, visit, www.preciouslifeservices.org. They can also call and leave a message at 830372-5980. The distribution drive will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the library located at 313 W. Nolte St.

Seguin ISD elementary school principal to make shift to middle school campus

Robert Arriola By Cindy AguirreHerrera

(Seguin) -- Students and staff at a local elementary school will be returning from their winter break next year with a change in campus leadership. In a letter to parents, Rodriguez Elementary School Principal Robert Arriola states that he will be leaving the position of principal so that he can assume the new leadership position of Lead Assistant Principal at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School. Arriola tells the Seguin Daily News that the decision did not come easily. However, he says the opportunity will allow him to fulfill his professional goal of becoming a school administrator "who is well versed in both the elementary and secondary worlds." "I'm excited to take on this new opportunity to join the

A.J.B. family and bring my knowledge and expertise to the work that is being done at A.J.B. and so my work as an elementary teacher and my work as an assistant principal and principal, they will really jive and will help with all that great work that's happening at A.J.B.," said Arriola. Arriola, who has been at Rodriguez for the last three years, says he of course will miss the students and hopes to reunite with former students who have moved on to the middle school level.

to ensuring the needs of all residents.

(Seguin) -- Only a few more days remain for this year's Salvation Army Kettle Campaign. Since the end of last month, individuals, families, groups and businesses have helped to ring bells in exchange for you donation to the local unit of the Salvation Army.

"It's incredible when you start looking at the figures and I would have never imagined this. Just last year alone, we took in $45,000 almost $45,500 just in these kettles and that's an amazing thought but even more amazing is that we have been doing this better than $40,000. We've been collecting just about that amount consistently every year and it's inspiring when you stand out there. I love ringing the bells myself because I know so many people in town and I see them and I also know those folks that I've helped and those are the folks that just warms my heart that they stop to say 'you know what, the Salvation Army was there for me this year, let me give.' They give freely and generously. It's real-

The group helps residents with emergencies such as rent, utilities, transportation etc. Tom Jones, of the Salvation Army, says he encourages folks to continue sharing their coins, dollars and checks with the red kettles found outside of the Seguin Walmart and Walgreens stores. Jones say the money that comes in these next few days is crucial

"So one of the exciting things, at least in my personal experience, in moving on to this new role is that I'll be able to reconnect with students who are now at A.J.B. Obviously, I know their parents. I know some other behavior concerns, some of the academic needs and so I will be able to really address, help and continue that momentum going forward to support the students as they go through their middle school journey," said Arriola.

ly incredible," said Jones. The red kettles can be found outside of Walmart from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. except for Sunday. Salvation Army volunteers say from October of 2018 through September of 2019, 1,644 individuals were helped by the local unit. This included 1,161 adults and 483 children. This year's campaign is also a week shorter than last year due to how Thanksgiving fell on the calendar. The last day for the Kettle Campaign is Christmas Eve. Jones says even after this year's campaign, the Salvation Army will continue to accept monetary donations. He says the group is also seeking volunteers to assist the group and its distribution of funds for those who need them. The Salvation Army Office can be contacted by calling at 401- 4872.

Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer named SCAC Sportsmanship award winner (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer was one of five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference fall sports programs recognized by the league as a recipient of the SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship award. The awards were announced after balloting conducted after each sport's respective season.

On the men's side, Texas Lutheran took top sportsmanship honors, followed by Colorado College and Schreiner.

SAAC team sportsmanship award with Texas Lutheran taking second. Schreiner and Trinity tied for third place.

TLU won its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship in 2019 and grabbed its second-ever NCAA Division III playoff berth.

In cross country, Dallas swept the team sportsmanship honors on both the men's and women's side. The Crusader men were the top choice with Johnson & Wales and Colorado College finishing second and third, respectively. For the women, UD earned top honors followed by Colorado College in second place and Trinity third in the balloting.

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year in an effort to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season.

Led by 14th-year Head Coach Eddie Salazar, the Bulldogs won a school-record 15 matches, going 15-6 overall and 7-2 in the SCAC.

The fall SCAC awards are presented in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball.

The Bulldogs, the No. 2 seed in the SCAC Tournament, defeated tournament host Trinity 2-0 and top seed Colorado College 3-1 to claim the conference title and the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA DIII playoffs.

Every program receiving recognition this fall is a firsttime Team Sportsmanship honoree - the first time this has happened since the award was created four years ago. In soccer, both SCAC tournament champions received Team Sportsmanship recognition - a first since the inception of the award.

TLU played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship (first round) and fell 2-0 to the Stags. CMS advanced to the NCAA DIII third round, falling to eventual national semi-finalist Centre (Ky.). For the women, Southwestern University earned the

UD's sweep of the cross country Team Sportsmanship awards marks the fourth consecutive year one program has received both men's and women's recognition. And in the sport of volleyball, Johnson & Wales received top honors with Trinity coming in second. Colorado College and Schreiner followed closely in a tie for third. The awards were voted on by each member institution's SAAC, with each individual group ranking the top three teams in each sport. The first place selections were awarded five points, second place earned three points and third place earned one point. Points were then totaled to select the conference's overall winner.

John Cecle Fleming Sr Sonny Jack Towery, age 81 of Seguin, passed away on December 5, 2019. Sonny was born in Seguin, Texas on January 1, 1938 to Oneal Franklin and Ora May (Wise) Towery. Sonny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. On November 10, 1957, Sonny married his high school sweetheart, Janeen Martha Lyn Grein. Together they shared many adventures traveling across the United States in their RV and meeting lifelong friends along the way. They especially loved to retreat to their home in Ruidoso, New Mexico during the hot Texas months. After his retirement from BJ Hughes in Houston, TX, Sonny and Janeen retired at their lake house in Huntsville, Texas. It is there, they became grandparents to six beautiful granddaughters, who loved spending time at NeNi and Popie’s lake house. Sonny enjoyed the great outdoors and especially four wheeling and snowmobiling in Colorado and New Mexico. He was a devoted San Antonio Spurs fan and never missed watching a game during basketball season, and of course giving his commentary on all of the plays. Sonny is preceded in death by his loving wife Janeen Grein Towery; his parents Oneal and Ora Towery; three sisters, Ruth Sonntag, Billie Jean Bujak, and Lillie Mae Hargrove; two brothers, Otha F. Towery and James F. Towery; and grandson Taylor Charles Towery. Christ reached down with His healing arms and gently cradled Olga Frances (Gaydos) Mueller, 91, as she peacefully moved from this life and was granted eternal rest on December 17, 2019 in Austin, Texas. Olga was born October 18, 1928 in Wilson County to the late Amelia (Stavinoha) Gaydos, who passed away when Olga was 12. She was the second to the youngest of ten children and was raised by her siblings on a farm. At the age of seventeen, Olga was introduced to Vernon Mueller in May 1946 by her best friend, Dolly (Vernon’s sister). After a whirlwind courtship filled with jitterbugging and waltzing, they were united in marriage on September 7, 1946. Their joyous love affair would continue for sixtyseven years. Olga and Vernon had lived in San Antonio, San Francisco, Somerset, Universal City and settled after retirement in Seguin where they resided for twentythree years.Olga took pride in being a fulltime mother and housewife and always kept an immaculate home, stayed involved with her two daughters’ school activities, and took charge of balancing the household finances, all done with precision. She prepared home cooked meals every evening and provided a haven of calm for her hardworking husband and their two energetic daughters. Some of Olga's great joys in life were cooking, music and dancing. In her younger years while listening to the popular TV program "American Bandstand," she would be dancing and singing in the kitchen while cooking. Even though she was a soft-spoken lady one could often hear Olga singing or humming a tune on a river bank while fishing with her cane pole. Olga and Vernon enjoyed traveling and

camping, often with their grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews. Olga was a member of Saint James Catholic Church for 23 years. There she was a Eucharist Minister and former member of the St. Ann’s Circle. She assisted her husband with activities at St. James Parish, McQueeney Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus Council 3412 where Olga was honored as “Lady of the Year” on the fiftieth anniversary of the Council’s founding. Olga was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon (2014); youngest daughter, Linda Morrow (2010); son-in-law, Rocky Carr (2016); six brothers, Joseph, Fred, Willie, Adolph, Lee and Edward Gaydos; and three sisters, Anna Kubacak, Clara Moudry, and Bessie Arnold. She leaves behind fond memories for her devoted daughter, Verna Lee Carr, of Austin; four grandchildren, Gary (Ann) of Spring Branch, Vernon (Jennifer) of Corpus Christi, Kristy (Ruben) of Dripping Springs, and Brian (Jennifer); eight great-grandchildren, Colton (Bryssa), Justin, Kathryn, Kelly, Olivia, Landon, Isabella, Sampson and one greatgreat granddaughter, Lillian; her brother, Benny Gaydos (Mildred) of Jourdanton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Through the last years of her life, Olga courageously battled with Alzheimer ’s which has now come to an end with an eternal new beginning as God’s perpetual light shines upon her. We take much comfort in knowing Olga is now at peace and back with her beloved husband. Private interment will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to Stonebridge Health Care Center for their compassion, care and support they gave to Olga in the final years of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in honor and memory of Olga's life be made to People Against Violent Crime, c/o Tree of Angels (in memo), P.O. Box 92621, Austin, TX 78709. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

ACA Individual Mandate Ruled Unconstitutional (New Orleans, LA) -- The Affordable Care Act's individual mandate is being ruled unconstitutional. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals made the judgment Wednesday. The ruling says the mandate "can no longer be read as a tax" and there's "no other constitutional provision that justifies this exercise of congressional power." The panel is ordering a lower court to look at the rest of Obamacare to see if the rest of the law should be thrown out. The appeals court decision likely means any Supreme Court action won't happen until after the 2020 election.

Weight Loss Could Slash Breast Cancer Risk By A Third (New York, NY) -- Weight loss could dramatically slash a woman's risk of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society says among women who need to lose weight, dropping just under 20 pounds and keeping it off reduces breast cancer risk by a third. It's long been known that being overweight or obese is linked to the disease as well as cancers of the colon, uterus, rectum, kidneys and pancreas. Women in the U.S. have a one in eight lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

Fed Study Shows Sharp Rise In Teen Vaping (Washington, DC) -- A new federal study suggests that teenagers are replacing drugs and alcohol with vaping. The annual Monitoring the Future survey of middle and high school kids finds that teens in the U.S. are drinking less alcohol, smoking fewer cigarettes and trying fewer hard drugs, but it also shows a sharp increase in vaping both marijuana and nicotine. There's a seven-percent rise in vaping marijuana among 8th graders and a 20-percent rise among 10th and 12th graders.

CDC: Outbreak Of Drug-Resistant Infections Linked To Puppies (Atlanta, GA) -- An outbreak of drug-resistant infections is being linked to pet store puppies. The CDC says 30 people have gotten sick in 13 states due to the outbreak, including four who've been hospitalized. Those affected range from eight-months-old to age 70-years-old, with cases reported in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming. The infection, first reported in January, causes fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps. The outbreak has been connected to contact with puppies, especially those at pet stores.
