(Seguin) – The latest U.S. Census numbers are out and the city of Seguin’s population is now estimated at 36,013. That is a 7.79 percent increase from July 1, 2022. City leaders say this significant increase has positioned Seguin among the fastest growing cities not only in the area but in the country.

Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says this impressive growth has positioned Seguin among the 25 FastestGrowing Cities in the United States (on a percentage basis) for communities with populations of 20,000 or more in 2022. Seguin ranks #21 on this list, out of 1,875 communities nationwide, underscoring Seguin’s dynamic expansion and appeal.

“Where in the 2020 Census, we were at almost 29,000 people and we know that was an under count even if we added to that, that is just an amazing amount of increase. And you know, we are working on that. We are accommodating that. Housing is do that. Our schools are preparing themselves for that. The more people here, the more things of quality of life that we can have, and we can support and that’s what we want to do.

Early voting officially underway in Republican Primary Runoff Election

(Seguin) – Today marks the first day of early voting for the Tuesday, May 28th Republican Primary Runoff Election. Helping voters understand what to expect is Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes.

“I think the main thing that people need to know for this early voting – this is a Republican Primary Runoff. The Democratic Primary did not result in a run-off so this will just be the Republican Primary Run-off so essentially, voters who voted in the Republican Primary or did not vote in the Primary at all but are eligible to vote now are able to vote in this election. So, that’s a little bit different than our normal election. So, it’s only Republican voters or voters who did not vote in a primary election that are eligible and we’ve got early voting starting on Monday, May 20. It’s going to run through Friday, May 24th. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all of our locations and we have six early voting locations for the voters to choose from,” said Hayes.

Hayes says those who are eligible to vote in the Republican Primary will have at least one countywide race appearing on the ballot. She says accessing a sample ballot is the first step for voters.

“Bring your photo ID. We do have sample ballots available on our website. Our sample ballot tool is up and running or voters can stop by our office and pick up a sample ballot. Voters will see if there is not a large number of races on their ballot depending on where they live. They could have US Rep. 28. They could have State Rep

44 or County Commissioner Pct. 1 or potentially all three of those. Everyone should have State Rep 44 though and that is county wide. The others, it just depends on which jurisdictions they reside in but a fairly short ballot and we hope short line. We want voters to come out and vote though because the run-off is very important. Again, it’s a chance to make their voice heard and the more people that come out and vote, the more strongly the voices count, right? So, we would like for them to come out and vote and remember no political gear. You can’t wear anything that supports the candidate that you are voting for. That is not allowed, and no cellphones allowed in the polling place so if the voters can just remember that, that would be wonderful,” said Hayes.

Candidates seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. House Texas Representative District 28 are Jay Furman and Lazaro Garza Jr. Seeking the State Representative District 44 seat are incumbent John Kuempel and challenger Alan Schoolcraft. Also appearing on the ballot for the Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1 race are candidates Jaqueline Ott and Dustin local Engelke. Early voting locations include the Seguin Elections Office, the Cibolo Fire Station #2; the Central Texas Technology Center; Redemptive Grace Ministries; New Berlin City Hall and Schertz Community Center.

Early voting begins today and runs through Friday, May 24 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

County Commissioner Pct. 1 race resumes

Ott, Engelke work to pull in votes during run-off election

(Seguin) – It’s gotime for the candidates vying for the Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1 seat in the May 28th Republican Primary Runoff Election. Today marks the first day of early voting in the election.

Jaqueline “Jackie” Ott and Dustin Engelke, one and two respectively, were the top two vote-getters in a pool of five candidates during the March 5 Primary Election. The candidates look to replace longtime Commissioner Greg Seidenberger who has chosen to retire.

Both Ott and Engelke now continue

to aggressively campaign for the Republican nomination.

When asked by the Seguin Daily News on what she wants voters to remember as they head to the polls, Ott says having served Guadalupe County for years as an attorney advocate for child protection and public safety, she wants the citizens to know that she will work just as hard to improve the quality of life for all.

“I have tried many cases and run a difficult CPS program from a point where it was in bad shape in this county to where it

We are not going to be 100,000. We are not going to be 200,000. But we are going to grow a little bit more. We are one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Texas percent wise and so that is pretty darn exciting,” said Dodgen.

Moreover, city officials say Seguin has distinguished itself as the fastest-growing community (on a percentage basis) within the San Antonio metro area over the past year. Within the broader San Antonio/Austin mega region, Seguin is ranked as the 3rd fastestgrowing community, trailing only behind Kyle and Georgetown.

Dodgen says the city’s inclusion in these rankings is a testament to the vibrant growth and development that Seguin is experiencing. She says this milestone reflects the community’s resilience, attractiveness, and the

was brought into success. Just like the successful work I did for the children of Guadalupe County for the years when I was a prosecutor, I will do the same work for our citizens in a different capacity to protect their safety, tax dollars, and quality of life. With my experience as both a private and government attorney, running a courtroom, and working for the county, I am able

successful efforts of everyone who has contributed to making Seguin a great place to live, work, and thrive.

“What I say is, I think, it is better to be part of the solution and to look at things positively. So, what can we gain from this? How can we use that to improve us and to put us to the next level? How can we use that to get the things we want? I look at it that way. That it is just another avenue and we take care of it and manage it smartly which I think that we are doing – not all may agree with that – but I think we are at least trying hard to do it that way and so it can give us the things that we want and the things that people want here. I was at Barnes (Middle School) doing a class and they told me they want a Cane’s, a Target, an HEB and a Chick-fil-A. We have to have people to have those things,” said Dodgen.

City officials say the city’s rapid

to hit the ground running on day one. I know what to do to help our departments remain successful and be provided with the resources they need. I am the only candidate with county experience, and the only one who has served in a law enforcement capacity who truly understands the resources necessary to keep us safe and successfully document crimes.

growth is further evidenced by the robust residential development underway.

Seguin currently has 27 residential subdivisions under construction and over 16,000 dwelling units in its development pipeline. Since 2020, nearly 4,000 new residential building permits have been issued, reflecting a significant demand for housing.

“In addition to residential growth, Seguin continues to attract a diverse array of businesses. Notable manufacturers such as Maruichi and Premium Waters are set to commence operations later this year, adding to the city’s economic vitality. In addition, retailers like Ross, Marshalls, Boot Barn, Discount Tire, and Harbor Freight Tools have expanded into the region over the past 12-18 months, with more substantial retail growth expected in the immediate future.

Run-off, continued.

It would be much more difficult to have that level of understanding without having experienced it on a daily basis. I am currently a real estate/property attorney who deals with cases about construction, building, purchase, sales, including contracts, and compliance. This experience along with my business degree from Texas A&M University provides a firm foundational background I will use to be a successful commissioner. I prioritize public safety, fiscal responsibility, education, and quality roads,” said Ott.

Ott says her desired goal if elected is to ensure fiscal responsibility, keeping the citizens’ wishes and needs in mind.

“Public safety while keeping taxes low with a forward-thinking approach -- that can be done by spending citizens’ dollars on what is most important to the citizens. Open, frequent communication is necessary to maintain awareness of what is important to the people and stay ahead of potential problems. My goals consist of the following: low taxes, fund police, better roads, safe community for children, quality education, stop overcrowding, and conservation of water supply,” said Ott.

Ott says she is excited to serve citizens with a listening ear and adds that she will be an active, energetic voice for each one of them.

“I am excited to serve you with a listening ear, and be an active, energetic voice for YOU. The citizens should always have a voice in where their tax dollars are being spent. I also want to use opportunities we are given to involve higher level

decision making to draw attention to the specific issues in the precinct so that we receive more attention and consideration than ever before. I believe we can be instrumental in the promotion of good education for our children and preserve our lifestyle with adequate preparation and proactive measures,” said Ott.

Also busy on the campaign trail is Engelke. Engelke says with it being a runoff election, he finds himself having to work a little harder to ensure that folks have that final say come May 28th.

"The runoff election is just very crucial. They typically have lower voter turnouts so I encourage everybody to get out there and vote and I would like to let people know a little bit more about me. First thing, I would like to let voters know is that I'm humbled to have the endorsement of our current Guadalupe County Commissioner Greg Seidenberger. You know, there is a direct correlation between what I currently do and what a commissioner does. I have spent the last 12 years of my career troubleshooting and resolving customer issues while also tackling environmental obstacles. I've managed company budgets and provided infrastructure and solutions to help growing businesses become efficient. I have spent my career helping others outside the county and it is time for me to bring this skill set back home. I have the experience to be your next county commissioner and when I am elected, I will leave my full-time position to focus solely on commissioning for our county," said Engelke.

Engelke, who currently works for an oil and gas company, says the seat on the commissioner’s court is more than about local politics.

"I believe it's my generation's obligation to properly manage and prepare our county for the future generations to come. Money isn't everything. My kids will be here whenever I'm gone so I want to provide the best possible scenario for them to live in and provide the best environment for them and our future generations. That matters more to me than helping others outside the county," said Engelke.

Engelke tells the Seguin Daily News that Guadalupe County is important not only now but for generations to come.

"I would like everybody to know that I'm not an outsider of Guadalupe County. I was born and raised here, and this is where my wife and I are raising our two children. I am a Christian, a husband, a father, a landowner, a farmer, and a rancher. Guadalupe County has always been my home and will always matter to me. My generation, like I said, has an obligation to properly manage and prepare our county for future generations to come. My vision is centered around public safety supporting our law enforcement and first responders, building quality roads and infrastructure while making sure we have efficient allocation of our taxpayers' money. I am eager to place a fresh set of eyes on the governing of our county and humbly ask for everybody’s vote," said Engelke.

Early voting begins today and runs through Friday, May 24 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early voting locations include the Seguin Elections Office, the Cibolo Fire Station #2; the Central Texas Technology Center; Redemptive Grace Ministries; New Berlin City Hall and Schertz Community Center.

Chris Austin Texas Lutheran Softball’s Season Ends with 5-3 Loss to #2 ETBU in Regional Championship

MARSHALL, Texas -- No. 9 Texas Lutheran softball’s season came to an end Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division-III Marshall Regional, falling to No. 2 East Texas Baptist, 5-3, in the regional championship.

The two teams traded runs throughout before Texas Lutheran (33-5) fell behind for good after the Tigers (41-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Texas Lutheran struck first in the first inning as Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/ Foy H. Moody) brought in Annie Kay (Sinton/ Sinton) to get the scoring started. A leadoff home run from the Tigers immediately tied the game up in the bottom of the inning.

A Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) RBI single brought in Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) in the second inning as the Bulldogs regained the lead, 2-1.

East Texas Baptist responded with runs in the third and fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

Texas Lutheran would respond yet again in the fifth inning with a one out solo home run from Kylee Jack (Richwood/ Brazoswood), her seventh of the season. Jack concludes the 2024 season with seven homers (sixth most in program history), 39 RBIs (tenth most in program history), and a program record .773 slugging percentage on the season, passing the previous record of .770 set by Becca Snow in 2021.

The Bulldogs would lie dormant for the remainder of the game as the two Tiger runs in the bottom of the fifth proved to be enough to win the back and forth top 25 matchup.

Senior Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/ Gregory-Portland) got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs and would go 4.2 inningsallowing five runs on six hits and three walks. Senior Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) relieved her in the fifth and would toss the final 1.1 innings.

Ouellette, Jack, and Leal were named to the All-Tournament Team following the game. Ouellette has the unique distinction of making the All-Tournament Team in every NCAA

Regional she has ever played in, making it every season from 2021-24.

This season marked the tenth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division-III Softball Tournament in program history and ninth straight Regional Championship appearance, a year that also saw Texas Lutheran claim its tenth straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) regular season championship and win its ninth SCAC Championship Tournament in ten seasons. As a team, the 2024 TLU softball team once again set a new NCAA Division-III record for stolen bases with 233 on the season, surpassing their previous record of 231 set in 2022.

Individually, Caelee Clark (Montgomery/ Lake Creek) set a new NCAA single-season stolen base record for Division-III with 87 stolen bases, which ranks third all-time across all levels, with her 2.29 stolen bases per game ranking second all-time in NCAA Division-III history. Clark also set a new program record with 1.66 hits per game across the 2024 season while also setting the program’s new single-game stolen base record with seven and tying the program record with five hits in a single game. In addition to setting the single-season slugging record, Kylee Jack set a new single-game record for total bases (10) while matching program records for home runs (2) and walks (4) in a single-game. Ashlyn Strother set the program record for career strikeouts, finishing her career with 599, while also becoming TLU’s career leader in perfect games (2).

The Bulldogs - a team picked to finish first

in the SCAC preseason poll - conclude the 2024 season with a 33-5 record, going 19-2 in the SCAC to claim their tenth straight SCAC regular season championship and winning their ninth SCAC Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs will graduate three seniors - seven seniors: Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock), Skylar Shanahan (Magnolia/Magnolia), Reagan Hillis, Ashlyn Strother, Tatum Seith (Hewitt/Midway), Reagan Jones (Pearland/Friendswood), and Jayna Reid (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs). Collectively, they are four-time SCAC regular season champions and three-time SCAC tournament champions as well as 2021 NCAA Tournament National runner-ups and 2022 NCAA Tournament Semifinalists. Over the course of their careers, they compiled a record of 173-26 in their time as Bulldogs. The group contributed to a 2022 season that saw the Bulldogs set program records in wins with 45 and a then-NCAA record 231 stolen bases in 2022 as well as 2024’s 233 stolen bases. We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran softball program.

Texas Deciding Whether Embryos Are Humans

(Denton, TX) -- What started as a normal divorce case in North Texas could have a major impact on the legality of in vitro fertilization. That’s due to what the couple had their prenup. It stated that, if there were any frozen embryos during their marriage, the husband would get custody. But, now, the wife has filed suit, claiming the frozen embryos are human beings. She wants them back. Her attorneys argues that, under Texas law, life begins at conception. That would mean the embryos are subject to child custody laws, not property laws. The state Supreme Court has not decided whether to take the case.

Number Of Overdose Deaths Drop For First Time In Five Years

(Atlanta, GA) -- The number of overdose deaths is down for the first time in five years. New preliminary data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics show about 107-thousand-500 people died from drug overdoses last year. That’s around 35-hundred less than 2022. Despite the drop, overdose deaths in 2023 were still almost double the number from five years ago. Synthetic opioids like fentanyl were involved in almost 70-percent of overdose deaths.

Washington To Receive 54,000 Naxalone Kits From Teva Pharmaceuticals

(Parsippany, NJ) -- Teva Pharmaceuticals. an Israeli drug company with its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey, is giving Washington State 54-thousand naloxone kits. Naloxone, also known as Narcan, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The Washington Attorney General’s Office reached a 91-million dollar resolution with Teva over its role in fueling the opioid epidemic and as part of that deal the company is giving the state narcan kits. The Department of Health will distribute the kits for free through the statewide mail-order naloxone program.

Many Voters Don’t Know About Caps On Drug Prices

(San Francisco, CA) -- Many voters aren’t aware of some of the key ways the Inflation Reduction Act, touted by President Biden, has lowered the cost of some prescription drugs. A new poll from health policy group KFF found that people aged 65 and older are most aware of the law. More than half of those know that the law has capped insulin prices at 35 dollars. Among all voters, only 35 percent are aware.
