NAMI Guadalupe County committed to serving ALL families

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Did you know that the largest grassroots mental health organization has a chapter right here in Guadalupe County? Taking the moment to further explain the efforts behind NAMI the (National Alliance of Mental Illness) is local founder Barbara Vinson. For the last six years, the local chapter in Seguin has helped to serve not only those suffering from mental illness but those caring for them.

Vinson says that is what has always set the organization apart from others.

“Our grassroots organization

is the only organization that supports family members that are dealing with a person with a mental health issue because doctors and everybody support the patient or the person with the mental health condition not the families. So we also help the families through support groups, free classes, presentations, we do presentations in businesses and in the workplace. We are trying to get a NAMI on campus at the high school. I’ve got one at Texas Lutheran University that is going to start this fall. I am absolutely thrilled,” said Vinson.

Keeping riders safe

reminding drivers to use caution around motorcycles

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court is revving up its reminders about motorcycle safety and how it’s everyone’s responsibility to play it safe when hitting the open road.

In recognition of May as Motorcycle Awareness Month, local leaders have been doing their part to increase public awareness about motorcycles.

Speaking of his own experience was Commissioner Pct. 3 Michael Carpenter. Carpenter says its important that all drivers keep all drivers safe.

“I ride as well. I was out this past weekend. My wife rides with me and for anybody who is here in the courtroom or who might be watching, I’ll say this every year, there’s a lot of things that while we are on two wheels that we can

avoid. There is a lot of things that we can do to protect ourselves but as the proclamation will state, we are largely unprotected on two wheels and one of the nightmares that we have when we ride is somebody not paying attention, taking a left turn in front of us. We can avoid an awful lot of things. Those are incredibly difficult. I missed one by about three inches several years ago and it was scary and it did test my willingness to ride so watch out for motorcycles especially on your left turns,” said Carpenter.

Applauding the county for encouraging safety around motorcycle riders was Jerry Ramirez. Ramirez is the president of the Brothers in Arms Motorcycle Club, Seguin Chapter, the only Texas chapter for the national organization.

“As you know we have a lot more motorcycles here in Texas. We rank fifth in the nation behind obviously California, Florida because of the population numbers but we have quite a bit of riders here in Texas is and unfortunately, we rank fifth in the nation for motorcycle fatalities and a lot of that has to do with we ride more time during the year. We have beautiful weather down here in South Central Texas so there is a couple of weeks throughout the year, we don’t ride so we are on the roads more often than some of these other states and unfortunately, that comes with that number of riders on the road. That unfortunate statistic,” said Ramirez. Ramirez says having this type of support locally is vital to saving lives.

“TxDOT does do a lot to bring awareness to motorcycles on the roads. You see the marquees all over San Antonio and then surrounding areas and a lot of campaigns, ‘Look Twice for Motorcycles’ and that kind of stuff and we appreciate that but along with that when you have government, city governments, county governments take the time to do things like this, it really helps us out. It really brings awareness about motorcycles to the community so I really appreciate you doing this for us. Thank you very much,” said Ramirez.

1In its continued support of Motorcycle Awareness Month, county commissioners approved a proclamation that recognized not only safety but also the Brothers in Arms Motorcycle Club which continues to support veterans and other worthwhile charities throughout the community.

NAMI, continued.

While it does not provide any medical, psychiatric, legal or counseling services, NAMI is committed to providing education, advocacy and support to families and individuals affected by mental illness.

Vinson says the last several years have shown that families are in need of these types of services and support.

“So when I moved here, this is a rural area -- well not now but I started NAMI Guadalupe County and we are here to serve people, the community and everything we do is free --- free support groups, free classes about mental health, free support for the family,” said Vinson.

Vinson says the curriculum that is shared is valuable information. Support includes the areas of basic caregiver support, family-to-family, NAMI Homefront for those with military service members, peer-to-peer and NAMI provider for mental health professionals.

“Our curriculum that we use, a lot of people don’t know about. It is written by our psychiatrists and psychologists and they have dealt with people in their family with mental health so it’s vetted. Its tried out before it ever hits us and it’s good and it’s tweaked so I think we are just the best thing that’s ever happened and people just have a hard time understanding that we are a stand alone empathetic, lived experience organization that

has been going on since 1979. We had it right. We aren’t ones that started because of COVID. We had it right for years,” said Vinson.

Since it’s inception, Vinson says NAMI has remained focus on the family and or caregivers who have no choice but to also come along this journey with their loved one.

“We are a grassroots organization which means we don’t take federal or state money. It started with two moms that decided life would be better for their schizophrenic kids. They are the original NAMI mommies. It started in 1979 talking about mental health. But of course, back then, no one talked about mental health and NAMI is worldwide and we had different affiliates within every state in the United States,” said Vinson.

The local support, however, has been incredible at least for the Seguin Chapter. Vinson says supporters know the importance of NAMI.

“We are a volunteer organization. People always think that since I helped start it, that I’m the executive director and I get paid big bucks. I get paid nothing. I’m a volunteer. I do this because mental health is so important and this is a gift to our community. Come find out about us. I can tell you Seguin and Guadalupe County is so good to us. We get our money through grants and individuals such as MHMR, Rotary Club, the Jimmy Buffet Parrothead Club. They are so nice to us and they fund us every year,” said Vinson.

With services readily available, Vinson asks that residents come out and take that first step toward peace, healing and understanding.

“Come take our classes for free. Lean about mental health. We will tell you how to communicate with your loved one. We will give you resources that are all over the United States from our own curriculum. It’s just amazing what is out there that you can learn. What is trauma? What about adverse childhood experiences? They are finding young children going through trauma. It doesn’t have to be a war. It doesn’t have to be anything like that that they are seeing their mental health is coming into play. Let’s get these young children help. Let’s get everybody help. College kids -- that’s why I started a NAMI on campus there. They will have their own club to talk about mental health. It is so important. People are just clammed up and they don’t want to say anything,” said Vinson.

Over the weekend, NAMI hosted its annual Your Best Life Festival at the Seguin Coliseum. It was able to pull together 60 plus resource groups for local families to get informed and seek out services of all kinds. The event was also held in observance of May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

The local chapter of NAMI Guadalupe County can be reached by calling 830-433-9036. Families are also encouraged to follow the group on its Facebook page for all upcoming events.

Report: Pfizer Settles Zantac Lawsuits

(New York, NY) -- Pfizer has reportedly agreed to settle over ten-thousand Zantac lawsuits. Bloomberg News reported Wednesday that Pfizer is settling multiple lawsuits over a cancer risk connected to the heartburn drug. The FDA pulled Zantac off the shelves in 2020 after a cancercausing substance was found in the drug. Thousands of lawsuits against Pfizer were soon filed in state and federal courts. The settlements cover cases in U.S. state courts but don’t completely resolve the drugmaker’s exposure to Zantac claims. Financial details were not disclosed.

FDA Issues Insulin Pump App Recall

(Washington, DC) -- The FDA says a software issue has led to a recall on more than 85-thousand devices for an insulin pump app. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the Version two-point-seven of the t-connect mobile app that connects with an insulin pump has caused more than 200 injuries. The FDA says the software glitch can result in an insulin pump shutting down sooner than it’s supposed to. The app is under a “Class One” recall, which the FDA says in its announcement is “the most serious type of recall” and the “devices may cause serious injuries or death.”

More Hospitals And Surgery Centers Are Demanding Patients Pay In Advance

(New York, NY) -- Hospitals are increasingly seeking advance payment for procedures like CT scans, knee replacements and even births. Advance billing helps hospitals avoid hounding patients to settle up payment. Federal law requires hospitals to take care of people in an emergency, and they can’t legally turn away patients who need medical care urgently for lack of prepayment. Congress and regulators have ordered hospitals to be more transparent on prices to avoid surprise billing. The hospitals say, knowing the cost ahead of service gives patients the opportunity to comparison-shop. Yet, half of all adults in the US say they can’t afford to spend more than 500-dollars on medical care should they be suddenly sick or injured.

GOP Anti-Abortion Bill Angers Physicians

(New Orleans, LA) -- Hundreds of Louisiana doctors have signed a letter, urging state lawmakers not to classify the abortion pill as a controlled substance. That would lock up those who help women end their pregnancies. The head of the New Orleans Health Department writes that the move could also delay life-saving treatment. The letter states that mifepristone [[mif-uh-PRISS-tone]] is safe and should not be in the same category as addictive drugs. That, the doctors claim, will result in “fear and confusion.” The author filed the bill after his pregnant sister’s husband slipped abortion pills in her drink without her consent.
