Leadership Seguin unveils new art installment

(Seguin) -- Now that the new interactive “Seguin” art display has sat in its new home for almost a week, it’s time to unveil some of the details that went behind installing the large lettering along the banks of Walnut Springs Park near downtown Seguin. Since it’s unveiling last Friday, the large Seguin letters have, no doubt, attracted double the number of visitors to the park space not only during the day but also during the night with its LED lighting.

As in the name, the interactive art form allows

the observer to walk through, over or around the piece. The local project also includes a platform for those in a wheelchair.

The project was made possible thanks to the members of this year’s Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class. Each year, the class is responsible for coming up with a project that enhances the quality of life in Seguin. It is also the class’ responsibility to fund their own project.

Among the most talked about feature for the art piece is the bold color used for the life size letters.

Helping solidify that color for the group was Joanna Rodriguez, a local member of the Seguin Commission on the Arts who volunteered her time to serve as the graphic designer and art director.

“I thought what a fun project and I wanted to be involved as a topographer and somebody that deals with this every day in my career, I thought this would be fun. So we partnered up and we went through a couple of variations of different fonts and I explained to them what things meant, Installment, pg. 3

City set to reopen Kids Kingdom Playscape in Starcke Park

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is inviting the community out to the official opening of the new Kids Kingdom Playscape in Max Starcke Park.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones extended the invitation during Tuesday night’s meeting of the Seguin City Council.

“Our Kids Kingdom Playscape is ready to go. It’s ready to open up this Friday, May 24 at 10 in the morning. We’re looking forward to getting the playground opened up on Friday morning for everybody. We’ll have HEB snacks donated by HEB,” said Jones.

Niagara Bottling is also expected to have a big presence in Seguin for the event. They were major contributors to the development of the playscape.

“Of course, Niagara Water will be there, because the portion of the park was funded by a Niagara Perk Your Park grant. So, we’re looking forward to (opening up the playscape).“

The grant from Niagara came as part of its Perk Your Park program, which asked for the public to vote for their favorite park

projects that had been identified as part of the Perks For Parks program. Seguin’s playground project was the top vote getter in the contest, which produced money to help fund the project. The bulk of the

There’s a New Bulldog in Washington: TLU Presents Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz with Football Helmet

(Washington, D.C.)

-- U.S Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz has a new football helmet to add to her collection in her Washington, D.C. office. De La Cruz, who serves Texas’s 15th Congressional District, has helmets from several of the universities in her territory-and as of this week, she’s got one more.

De La Cruz says she thanks Texas Lutheran University for her new football helmet. De La Cruz. “It’s a wonderful addition to my collection and a reminder of one of the top institutions for Christ-centered learning in Texas that I am proud to represent,” said De La Cruz.

The helmet, secured by TLU Student Government Association President Joaquín Fernando Rodríguez, was

“Presenting the helmet to the congresswoman was an honor,” said Smith. “It felt as if I was representing the proud people of TX15 and the amazing people at TLU!”

backdrop works really well. I’m glad they put it here so, I say ‘thumbs up.’ I really like it.”

what colors meant, different color pallets and really, we went through a lot of different color pallets and we ended up with this one because it references the ‘Seguin Brick’ so all the colors that I presented to them were inspired by our landscape, our buildings, the river, the bricks. So, this is ultimately the one they selected. I just call it ‘Seguin Brick Red’ -- red orange -- it’s a mixture of the brick colors,” said Rodriguez.

The location and selection of the park itself was also determined following several collaborative efforts. Rodriguez says plenty of homework went into finding the right spot for this project.

“So, we knew that we were going to be surrounded by greenery, maybe brown at different times of the year. We wanted something that was going to pop against that landscape so we took that into account as well. From the very first meeting when we talked about locations, I took that into consideration of what it is going to look like, what people standing next to it will look like. So, all of that played into what the font was, how big it was, how thick the letters were and ultimately, it was about creating something that was beautiful and that looked good in this space,” said Rodriguez.

As an artist, local resident Robin Walker justified the color choice. A color she said was perfect. Plus, she says the interactive lettering could not have been placed in a better location.

“I like the location and I like the project because it is community oriented but it’s also tourist orientated and I think anything that creates a little interest in our city is something that is good and I like the color. It’s not too bold. Orange works here because of the colors of the park, the seats, the bronze -- I think it’s darling,” said Walker. “The fact that you can actually stand here in front of the word Seguin and you have this gorgeous

Jack Jones, the Seguin Parks and Recreation director, says the city is grateful for this added bonus to Walnut Springs Park. With the Seguin Public Library just across the street and with a new vision for the Wells Fargo building beginning to emerge, Jones says he is excited to have this extra draw to the local park for pictures and conversation.

“We love gifts in parks. That’s for sure and Walnut Springs Park, it is really an art park in a sense. You see sculptures in the park of birds and roadrunners but now, we have another piece of art in these large letters that spell Seguin and so we are definitely appreciative of the chamber class for thinking of us and giving us this public art for Walnut Springs Park,” said Jones.

Although the 13 members of the chamber’s Leadership Class each had a hand in the project, Class Member Amy Jimenez says the nine-month long project would not have been possible without the community’s support. She says it’s important to note that the group, again, did not use any city funding for the project. Instead, she says the approximately $40,000 price tag was covered through fundraising such as their golf tournament and community donors.

“A lot of hard work went into funding the project so we were truly blessed to be able to raise the funds that we did to make this happen. We are truly thankful to the community -- the giving back, to just beautify Seguin and to invest in our community. I think that is really important and we are really grateful for that,” said Jimenez.

The project dubbed by Leadership Seguin as the “giant Seguin letters” officially wrapped up Tuesday during the group’s graduation dinner at the Geronimo Community Center.

Walnut Springs Park is located at 306 W. Nolte St.

TLU Men’s Track and Field Ready for the Big Stage at the NCAA Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The biggest stage is set for the Texas Lutheran men’s track and field team as the Bulldogs prepare to compete on the national stage at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Bulldogs begin the competition on Thursday as Ezra Acero (San Antonio/Harlan) pursues All-American status and a national championship in the pole vault. Narrowly missing All-American status in 2023, Acero enters the event tied for seventh in NCAA Division-III with a school record mark of 5.02m (16’ 5.5”) set in March.

After an exciting outing that saw the team compete in a run-off and earn All-American status, the Texas Lutheran 4x100m relay team returns to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season and third time in the last six times the championships have been competed. 2023 All-Americans Bryce PowellChimene (Dayton/Dayton) and Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) return to the championship meet looking to repeat as AllAmericans in the 4x100m relay, this time flanked by first-time qualifiers - sophomores Justin Freeney (Montgomery/Lake Creek) and Rickey Franks (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton). The team enters the event ranked 14th in NCAA Division-III. The team enters with a season-best time of 40.80 seconds which they ran in the

Trinity Last Chance Meet earlier this month.

Acero will compete at 3 PM CST on Thursday followed by a 4:25 PM CST start time for the 4x100 relay. The Bulldogs relay team will compete in a Texas heavy heat two which will also feature East Texas Baptist and McMurry. If the Bulldogs make it to the event finals, the 4x100m relay team will compete again on

Saturday.

All three days of the event will be broadcast on ncaa.com. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Sen. Gillibrand Calls On White House To Ramp Up Bird Flu Prevention

(New York, NY) -- New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the White House to ramp up efforts to prevent the spread of Bird Flu before it’s too late. The New York Democrat is urging the White House to disclose what guidance they have released to agencies and states and what steps they have taken to control the virus since the outbreak began. Gillibrand points out that the new avian flu strain is infecting cattle for the first time in the U.S. and that one case of dairy cow to human transmission was confirmed by the CDC in Texas last month. Avian flu has not been detected in New York’s dairy cows, but given the state’s large dairy industry, Gillibrand is concerned about potential spread to the state and nationwide.

The E-P-A acknowledged there have been cyber attacks against water utilities in Texas and Pennsylvania.
