Guadalupe County announces

plans for first-ever bulk trash clean-up day

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County residents are being encouraged to mark their calendars for what the county hopes will be the first of many bulk trash collection days.

Similar to Seguin’s city clean-up days, the county is finalizing plans for its own summer collection effort.

Guadalupe County Public Information Officer Carmen Davila says officials have been working to provide the service to county residents.

She says not only is there a need for disposal services for regular household trash, but over the years, residents have struggled with debris left behind by storms that have rolled through the area, including the storm that hit parts of the county earlier this month.

“So, when we had the closing of the collection stations when we didn’t have anyone bid on those contracts to continue to leave those collection stations in Marion and Kingsbury, Trash, pg. 3

Navarro names new junior high principal

(Seguin) -- The Navarro ISD community is invited tonight to meet the new principal for Navarro Junior High. Tori Beutnagel has been named as the new campus principal. Beutnagel is making the move to Navarro after years of serving several key roles within the Seguin ISD. Up until now, she was serving as the associate principal at Barnes Middle School.

District officials say Beutnagel brings 18 years of educational experience and a strong background in curriculum implementation, staff management, student-centered initiatives, and campus leadership. They say she is dedicated to driving academic excellence, fostering positive relationships, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says the district is excited about welcoming Beutnagel to a community she knows very well.

“Navarro is a family feel. She has grown up in the area. She attends church and has attended since she was a young

child, Frieden’s Church, so many of the people in our community already know who she is and know her commitment to students and her commitment to creating a culture of education that employees are glad to come to work, students are excited to come and learn and we look forward to seeing her join our family and bring in the ideas that she has to continue to make us better and we really are excited to have

her on board. Her energy, her experience, I think, is really going to help us grow as we add more families,” said Epley.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Texas State University and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Lamar University, Beutnagel is slated to earn a Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University this December.

To ensure a smooth transition for its families in advance of next year, the district tonight will host a special meet and greet so that they can welcome Beutnagel to the Panther Family.

Community, parents and students are invited to stop by the meet and greet today from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Navarro Junior High Cafeteria.

Beutnagel takes over for longtime Junior High School Principal Luke Morales who will resign at the end of the school year after serving the Navarro ISD for 20 plus years.

Guadalupe County student brings pellet gun to school

Schools on west end of county report guns on campus

(Schertz) -- An 11-year-old student is in custody after reportedly taking a pellet gun to school on Monday.

Staff members at Wilder Intermediate School got word around 10:30 a.m. that a student had brought a BB gun to campus.

Schertz police say it was actually a pellet gun, that looked like a Glock pistol.

The student reportedly sent another student a picture of the gun on social media, claimed it was real, and said he planned to use it in a fight.

The student is accused of making a terroristic threat.

This is the third gun-related incident this month in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD.

At Clemens High School, a student was found with a loaded handgun last week. A couple of days later, another student was arrested for bringing a gun to the Allison Steele Enhanced Learning Center.

Trash, continued.

that was something that the county decided that eventually we will attempt to have a bulk trash cleanup day and this is the result of that,” said Davila.

Although specific details for the event have not yet been released, Davila says the county wanted to give people a heads up about the event, in hopes that it would give residents a chance to start thinking about the items that they want to get rid of during the bulk trash event.

“Getting the word out is important so that people can plan. I know if you are going to do a cleanup, you want to be able to plan in advance June 8. It will be 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. That’s the preliminary time,” said Davila.

The tentative date for the county cleanup is Saturday, June 8.

The event will be held at the Central Location for the road and bridge department.

The area, near the Guadalupe County Jail, is located

Raise, continued.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says the salary increase decision was the direct result of months of meeting, planning, and evaluating various compensation-related topics.

“That group really talked through options. Not only for salary but also for insurance and some of those perks of being an employee and so they brought those recommendations to the school board and shared what they thought would be quality compensation moving forward and we really thought it was a power experience for our employees. We loved that all of them got to have their voices heard and all employee groups were represented and so they shared that information and we hope to continue that each year so that we can continue to have those voices heard and the board really liked that they had recommended the four percent,” said Epley.

As part of the recommendation to the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees on Monday, the district also gave the green light for a $1 flat increase for hourly employees. This includes classroom paraprofessional staff, food service, custodial staff, maintenance staff, and bus monitors. A 4 percent midpoint for non-professional staff was also extended to bus drivers plus office and technology staff.

Over the last couple of years, Epley says the district has made strides to move the district forward. She said last year, the district was also able to

give a four percent increase when others were not able to.

Epley says they wanted to show support to their employees, and the district wanted to remain as competitive as possible.

“In a growing district having more students come in and maintaining that high attendance rate really helps us to continue to offer good salaries for our employees. So, we felt as we looked at it, that we really did support that four percent and could see that working in our budget. We also recognized that some of hourly employees were below some of the area’s and we wanted to bring them up so we agreed to that additional dollar that the committee had recommended as well,” said Epley.

Despite constrained education budgets, Epley is confident that the Navarro ISD can fully support its operations for the upcoming fiscal year.

“Right now, we are projecting that we will not be in a deficit. We will be right at break even but surrounding school districts are struggling with that. We are trying to predict what the legislature may or may not do in support of education and so as we look at that, we are very mindful of our revenue, of what our taxpayer dollars are coming in and how we can be fiscally responsible in meeting the needs of our community as it grows and also being a competitive district that is able to recruit these amazing people to really make Navarro ISD an awesome place to work and learn in and raise your family in,” said Epley.

Additionally, district officials say the committee had initially recommended a $20 increase in the district’s contribution towards health insurance costs. However, with the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) recently announcing a 13 percent increase in health insurance plan rates for 2024-25, the employeeonly cost is set to rise by $50. In response, they say the district will increase its contribution by $35, ensuring that the same percentage contribution towards health insurance costs is maintained.

Despite this unexpected news, Epley adds that the district is grateful that it could still provide some relief to its employees.

“But one of the things that came in late that the committee did not see was the teacher retirement system which we use for our insurance was going to increase rates and while we had already talked with the committee about a small increase, we really felt that after they release what the increase would be that we needed to bump that up even further so that was really the only change that the board saw (Monday night) from the original recommendation and the board is in full support of making sure the people who work in Navarro ISD are compensating for the amazing work they do with our kids,” said Epley.

The starting salary for a new beginning teacher in the Navarro ISD is now $54,300. That’s compared to this year’s salary of $52,500.

Seguin Baseball MVP Kayden Holz signs college commitment

Chris

(Seguin) -- In front of family, friends, coaches and teammates, Seguin High School senior Kayden Holz signed on the dotted line to continue his academic and athletic career at Our Lady of the Lake University at a signing ceremony on Tuesday at the high school.

Holz will take his talents just to the west of Seguin at the private Catholic school in San Antonio. The Matador shortstop, who was named the 2024 team MVP at the team’s banquet this week, made his commitment to the Saints official on Tuesday morning.

A number of college offers rolled in for Holz this season and he says the many conversations he had with OLLU were a big factor for him in choosing the Saints.

“Everyone else was still talking to me but the way (OLLU) were talking to me over time, just constantly making sure and checking on me meant a lot to me,” Holz said. “So, it really leaned me forward to them in making this decision.”

Seguin head baseball coach put Holz in the leadoff spot for the district season and the senior responded with some big late-game hits for his coach. Holz tripled in the winning run against Kerrville-Tivy in a walk-off win against the Antlers in March. He scored a walk-off run after doubling with the bases loaded to drive in three and tie the Mats’ game against San Antonio Veterans Memorial in April.

Holz also competed on the Seguin 4X100

track relay team. He says he’ll never forget the memories he made with his teammates on the baseball and track team. Holz teamed with Nik Henry, Ocean Moreno and Elliot Weaver to win the bronze medal at the UIL Class 5A state track & field meet in Austin earlier this month. He says it was a rush to be in the moment at the state meet.

“What can I say, adrenaline. It was just

rushing through me. It was just all in a blink of an eye and it was a crazy moment and something I will never take for granted.”

Holz plans to study business at Our Lady of the Lake. He hopes to use his entrepreneurial education in his future after graduating from college.

The Our Lady of the Lake baseball program is led by head coach Matt Piker. The Saints had a 28-24 overall record in the 2024 season.

North Carolina Lawmakers Still Looking At Face Mask Ban

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina lawmakers still have to weigh a face mask ban statewide. The state Senate passed a measure last week, but it has faced opposition from North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services. The agency says it won’t penalize people for wearing masks for health reasons. A statement from the department reads the ban will likely have a chilling effect on the average person’s willingness to wear as mask.

Pfizer Wins 107-Million From AstraZeneca

(Dover, DE) -- A Delaware federal jury says the medical company AstraZeneca violated patent rights during an experimental lung cancer trial. On Friday, AstraZeneca was ordered to pay Pfizer 107-million-dollars after an investigation found an AstraZeneca medication infringed on two Pfizer patents that cover methods for treating cancer. The lung cancer drug in question, Tagrisso, earned AstraZeneca nearly six-billion-dollars in revenue last year. A spokesperson for AstraZeneca said they’re disappointed with the verdict.

Pennsylvania Lawmakers Eye Small Pharmacy Protections

(Harrisburg, PA) -- Pennsylvania lawmakers are pushing a plan that would protect small, independent pharmacies. The new proposal would create a pathway for pharmacists to file complaints against pharmacy benefit managers who have an outsized influence on the pharmacy marketplace. The legislation would also require more transparency on prices and discounts. State Rep. Jessica Benham says the PBMs have squeezed smaller, independent pharmacists, noting that if Mom and Pop pharmacies completely close, many smaller communities across Pennsylvania won’t have any local drug stores.
