Christmas Belles to hit the stage tonight in Seguin

Ashville, North Carolina wrote this play called Christmas Belles and they did a very good job with the comedy I can tell you that. They are Southern characters. They are bigger than life. They get in some unusual situations and of course, everything comes out well in the end but to get to the happy ending is quite a ride," laughs Lucas.

Co-Director Sheila Lucas says the cast and crew have been working non-stop during this already busy season to rehearse for this fun and hilarious holiday favorite -- a favorite that takes the audience into a small Texas town and into the lives of squabbling sisters and an out of control Christmas church program. "Just to hold your tummy because it's a belly laugh a minute I will tell you. Three demented people from

Lucas says its list of characters become even larger on stage thanks to plenty of hometown talent. "The Futrelle sisters all have their partners and or husbands in the play except for the oldest Futrelle sister who has had many many partners as we find out in her life so she's quite a sparkling character and the casting in this has been so much fun. Pat Hoppe and I are co-directing and we had auditions and the perfect people came out for these roles. We are even dragging Jan Baker back on stage so it's going to be a riot," said Lucas. Among the noted cast members is KWED's own Linda Duncan. Duncan's character, Frankie, is several weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Described as being perhaps the most stable of the three sisters, Duncan recently shared a few lines of her character during the Saturday Topic Program on KWED. See BELLES, page 3

Seguin ISD middle school student gets a Christmas surprise at school just taking care of her at the house and we grew a bond and same with her. Anytime, I feel like I need to talk to someone but like I'm too afraid to talk to friends or parents, I would just go straight to her and just lay in bed and talk about things," said Jose.

(Seguin) -- Christmas arrived early for one A.J. Briesemeister Middle School student. That's because her gift was delivered to campus. After being away and serving in Kuwait and Jordan for the past year, U.S. Army Private First Class Jose Leal, came home Wednesday afternoon to surprise his little sister Yasmine Leal during her Spanish class.

Helping to orchestrate the entire surprise was their Mother Ysenia Leal. Ysenia, a Seguin ISD employee, says the reunion is the best gift she could ever receive.

Yasmine, who originally thought that the media was on campus for a further look into a class project, says she couldn't fight the tears as she saw her brother walk down the school's foyer and into her arms. Following the much overdue hug, the solider lifted up his sister, carrying her tight. Although, she knew he was coming home, Yasmine didn't think their reunion would be in front of her classmates.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

"I was confused at first. I didn't know what was going on and then I saw him and I just started crying. I was really excited," said Yasmine. Yasmine says when it comes to her brother, there is no better hero. "He's always there for me and anytime I'm feeling sad and stuff like

Ysenia Leal, Pfc. Jose Leal, Yasmine Leal that, I tend to call him while he's away and I talk to him," said Yasmine. As for the solider, he says surprising his sister was important. He says they have a bond like no other.

"This is my world right here. As I was talking about my parents earlier, growing up my dad was a truck driver so he always was having to work and then mom had to go to college (and) work and still trying to be a full-time mom so I would help out with

"They just have this bond that they can't be without each other. They are always together and her knowing that he was coming home and just praying to make sure that he made it home I think that as a mother, that makes me feel good because I know that they have that bond. I always tell them, If you don't have anybody else in the world, you have each other. So you have to care for each other, love each other, pray for each other, be there for each other and that's something that I've always told them as they grew up so I think we enhanced that in them -- my husband (Jose Sr.) and I -- that aside from them being almost eight years apart, they are very close and they spend a lot of quality time together when they are together

so I'm very proud of both of them. That's for sure," said Ysenia. With her brother now within an arm's reach, Yasmine says she can tell her brother exactly what's been in her heart. "That I missed you and I always prayed for you every night. I mean I prayed for you. I made sure that you were going to be safe. I prayed for you and I made sure that God was taking care of you," said Yasmine. Jose, is currently stationed at Fort Carson, CO. He says although he'll be returning on Jan. 5, he plans to make every minute count with family especially when it comes to spending time with his sister. "Oh, we are going to go home and watch Disney Plus because I've been wanting to watch Disney and that's like one of our favorite things to do is watch Disney shows together so we are definitely going to do a lot of that," said Jose. The family for the rest of the week and weekend will be enjoying a specially planned family vacation. Ysenia says they'll return to enjoy the Christmas holiday with even more family and friends. The Leal family thanks those at the middle school who were also in on the plan including School Principal Dr. Benjamin Grijalva.

Your heart might be in the right place but it makes you wonder if all the scratching and fighting is worth it," said Duncan in her role as Frankie.

BELLES, continued from page 1 And if her current state of being cranky wasn't already enough, Duncan's character juggles even more drama into the performance as she looks to unleash a family secret into the mix of her already out of control family. "And having to deal with my sisters has not helped. I mean Twink is in jail, Honey Raye is trying to turn the tabernacle of the lamb into Caesar's Palace and then there's that other situation. I know. I promised to break the news before Christmas but mama with the twins coming on top of the mess that we are already in, I don't see how that can happen. Besides, it's been a secret this long -- a little longer isn't going to hurt. Of course, every-

Matadors suffer home loss to Boerne-Champion

(Seguin) - Seguin is 0-2 to start the District 26-5A boys basketball slate after dropping a tightly contested game to Boerne-Champion 51-44 Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym. The Matadors fell behind 17-8 in the first quarter before reeling off 12 straight points to take a 20-17 lead midway through the second period. Gerrit Twitero produced half of the scoring outpt during that surge with a pair of three-pointers. The Chargers responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 26-20 cushion into halftime. Seguin used a three-point play by Christopher James and a low post bucket from Matthew Doege to score the first five points of the third quarter and pull within one, 26-25, but Champion won the rest of the period 11-4 to lead by eight, 37-29, heading into the fourth quarter. The Matadors pulled within three points twice in the final frame. James burried a three with 4:14 left to make it 42-39 and banked in a layup to make it 44-41 with 3:05 to go. Seguin could draw no closer down the stretch. Champion's Parker Delay was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made all three free throws to push the margin to 47-41 with 2:14

remaining. He added another foul shot after an empty Seguin possession to give the Chargers a seven-point advantage.

double figures. Doege finished with four points, including a first quarter dunk. R.J. Acuna and Tyson Coleman added two apiece.

James drilled a three to pull the Mats back within four in the waning seconds, but Champion hit three more free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Gerlich credited Twitero for showing the versatility to shuffle between the high post and wing positions as Seguin tried to offset the absence of Vela on the offensive end of the floor.

Seguin departed from its typical strategy of constant fullcourt defensive pressure and fast-paced offense. With starting guard Joseph Vela (12.9 ppg) sidelined by an injury, the Matadors played at a more deliberate tempo, and at times seemed disjointed against the Chargers' 2-3 zone defense. "We did lack execution in our zone offense today," Seguin head coach Dwayne Gerlich said. "I really thought our defense was really good, and we did a lot of good things. We probably could have held them under 50 points real easy, but we had to foul at the end - it was a four point game there. Other than that, I thought we stayed in it, kept hustling, kept working, but you can't have 19 turnovers against a zone team. That's basically what the game came down to." James and Twitero scored 18 points apiece to lead the Matadors offensively, but no other Seguin player reached

"He plays that high post because of our situation, what we had, and I had to put him out on the wing because he's one of our better shooters also, but then we're kind of lacking at the high post there," Gerlich said. "So it was a matter of trying to find the right personnel at the right time, and we just didn't quite get it done." Seguin (7-8, 0-2) hopes to find the district win column Friday in a 6:30 p.m. visit to San Antonio-Harlandale before next week's holiday break. "We're going to be just fine," Gerlich said. "This is along marathon here. We still have 14 more district games. A lot of things are going to happen. We just have to learn from this situation and go back to work, and work on the execution the next couple of days."

Seguin girls drop district road tilt to Chargers (Boerne) - Seguin is still chasing its first notch in the District 26-5A girls basketball win column after a 61-32 road loss to BoerneChampion on Tuesday. The setback dropped the Matadors to 0-4 in districtt play, 7-12 overall. Taylor Bode paced Seguin's scoring effort with nine points. Kaitlyn Ranft finished with eight. The Mats trailed

21-13 at the end of the first quarter, 39-19 by halftime, and 50-26 going into the fourth period. Seguin continues district play Friday at Goldie Harris Gym with a 6:30 p.m. home game against Harlandale.

FDA Approves Cigarette With 95% Less Nicotine

42% Of Kids Are Exposed To Sexting By 14

(White Oak, MD) -- A new type of cigarette will soon hit the market with 95-percent less nicotine. The FDA approved Moonlight and a menthol version to help ease addiction. The FDA found smokers who took in less nicotine also cut back on the number of cigarettes per day. The company plans to market the new products as less harmful than conventional cigarettes.

(Undated) -- Parents will be shocked to hear their child could be exposed to sexting by age eight. That's what a new survey finds. The parenting app Jiminy studied 54-million texts to see how often kids are sending each other X-rated messages and/or pictures. The result was 10-percent of eight-year-olds have been exposed with the number climbing to 42-percent by age 14. Overall, the study found sexting is mutual for kids 10 to 17 though it seems to start earlier for girls.

New Rules Proposed To Increase Organ Transplants (Washington, DC) -- There's new hope for more than 113-thousand people waiting for a life-saving transplant. The Department of Health and Human Services is proposing new rules to make sure organs don't go to waste. The first step is to overhaul organizations that collect and deliver the organs. Some have been found to miss opportunities in securing donors. If those organizations start performing better, it's estimated five thousand more transplants could happen each year by 2026. The second step is to ease the financial burden for living donors by reimbursing them for lost wages and child care. Most of the changes wouldn't take effect until 2022.
