Commencement exercises set for Matador Stadium Diplomas await Navarro High School Class of 2024

(Seguin) – The last chapter of high school comes to a close this Friday night for approximately 528 Seguin High School seniors who will be walking the stage over at Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium.

Presenting the Class of 2024 during this year’s commencement exercises will be Seguin High School Principal Christine Perez.

Perez says it was this group of students who navigated their first year of high school during the initial unknowns of the COVID pandemic.

Today, Perez says the community stands proud behind these students and recognizes their successes along the way.

“One of the traits of the Class of 2024 that I have been most impressed with has been the level of leadership and also that they are part of the COVID class.

(Geronimo) -- Lights at Erwin-Lee Stadium are set to shine Friday night on this year’s Navarro Class of 2024.

Navarro High School Principal Clay Scarborough says a total of 144 students will be presented to the community during tonight’s commencement exercises.

Scarborough says he is proud of all these students, who started high school during COVID and who have worked hard to excel over the last four years.

“They overcame all that. Eighth grade got shut down for them. They came back in mass and now they are set to graduate. It’s a class that has almost 550 hours

of college under their belt,” said Scarborough.

Scarborough says this is a high achieving group of students, who has worked hard both on and off campus. He says juggling all those activities will help better prepare them for the future.

“It’s a great time management thing that they are going to need -

Final day for early voting arrives for May 28th Runoff Election

(Seguin) -- Today marks the end of early voting for the Tuesday, May 28th Republican Primary Runoff Election.

Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says folks have until 7 p.m. to cast their ballots early at one of the six polling locations throughout the county. Those locations include the Seguin Elections Office, the Cibolo Fire Station #2; the Central Texas Technology Center; Redemptive Grace Ministries; New Berlin City Hall and Schertz Community Center. Hayes those wanting to take advantage of voting early are reminded to make it to the polls on time.

“We want to remind voters not to wait until 6:55 to try and vote if possible because at that point, there will be lines if that is what happens and so we want the voters to plan ahead and maybe get there a little earlier rather than later. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. will be able to vote early. That’s the law,” said Hayes.

Matadors, continued.

Among the races appearing on Tuesday’s runoff ballot include the Republican nomination for U.S. House Texas Representative District 28. Candidates include Jay Furman and Lazaro Garza Jr. Seeking the State Representative District 44 seat are incumbent John Kuempel and challenger Alan Schoolcraft. Also appearing on the ballot in the Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1 race are candidates Jaqueline Ott and Dustin local Engelke.

Hayes says these hotly contested races have attracted plenty of attention and warns voters to check their sample ballots before heading out.

“We’ve got candidates that are out there campaigning and they are very diligent and sometimes voters don’t realize that some of the campaign signs they are seeing don’t pertain to them. So, even though they may be eligible to vote in the Republican Primary Runoff, when they come in to vote, they don’t

So, you remember, this cohort experienced all of the ramifications of COVID including what their public school experience has been like and so to see them executing leadership as seniors this year and the community on our campus, some in their church organizations or other organizations that they are a part of, it just speaks volumes to the level of resiliency and determination that they had for themselves and also as a cohort of learners,” said Perez.

Helping to lead their classmates to the stage are Valedictorian Lorenzo Rodriguez and Salutatorian Sophia Atrian.

The milestone for Rodriguez being named this year’s Valedictorian is more than just being the top student. Rodriguez says it is about breaking barriers.

“I am also proud to be representing number one in our class because there really hasn’t been a Hispanic Valedictorian like within the last decade or even longer than that. So, that’s also why I am really proud to have this honor,” said Rodriguez. “I’ve just been looking at those pictures on the wall over there -- that represents the last decade, and I don’t see anyone like me that is number one in that spot. So, I’m glad to fill that gap.”

realize until they get their ballot that they actually don’t reside in one of the districts for which the candidates are campaigning,” said Hayes.

Hayes adds that all voters eligible to vote in the runoff will have the State Rep 44 race on their ballot, but the other races will depend on the voters’ address.

Plus, she says it’s important to remember that voters who voted in the Republican Primary and voters who did not vote in the Primary election but were registered before the voter registration deadline will be eligible to vote in the Republican Runoff Election.

Again, those unsure about their respective races are asked to stop by the elections office to pick up their sample ballot.

The Seguin Elections Office is located at 215 S. Milam St. Early voting runs today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Rodriguez says being able to retain the top spot has always meant surpassing his own personal goals.

“It was a surprise freshman year and then I just kept building off of that since then. I always had a pretty big gap so I knew I had some wiggle room to work with, Matadors, pg. 3

when they go out into the real world, when they go to college -- the ability to manage all the things we deal with in everyday life. Some will do their college work -- do their sports and academics and whatever do they beyond college and then when they grow up and have their families -- if they are able to handle two and three sports and do what they’ve done academically, the only thing in their way is what they want to accomplish,” said Scarborough.

Representing this year’s group of graduates are Valedictorian Hayden Toliver and Salutatorian Taylor Helms.

Toliver says he learned very early on that he could lead his class and today is honored for the opportunity.

“It was not too much of a surprise to me. I kind of already knew but I’m very excited. I’ve been waiting for this a long time,” said Toliver.

Toliver will attend Texas A&M University to study chemical engineering. He shares in the celebration with parents Shawn and Paula Toliver.

Helms, as this year’s salutatorian, is looking forward to joining Toliver on stage.

While it was work, Helms she would not have changed a thing.

“It took a lot of hard work. It took a lot of late night studying especially for my junior year. I took a dual credit

but I was just competing with myself to get the highest GPA I could because that was really my goal,” said Rodriguez.

He says this achievement, however, would not have been possible without the unwavering support of his parents Mary Lou and Rogelio Rodriguez. He says much of his motivation has also come from his grandmother Louisa Gonzales who has always paved the way for him to remain humble as he worked toward success.

“She just spreads a lot of wisdom to me. She reminds me how to be kind to people. She’s very innocent and I just think she is sweet,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez’s plans are to study computer science at Rice University. His dream is to be a software engineer.

Like Rodriguez, Atrian’s commitment to keeping up with her studies has also paid off.

“I’ve known since freshman year that I was top two, and it was kind of like ‘oh, I want to stay top two, but I’ve always really tried to prioritize myself and just educating myself rather than trying to compete with others,” said Atrian.

history class and we did a lot of note cards. That took a lot of studying for me to do. I play club volleyball so that was a lot also -- to try to handle and time manage for both of them but it was definitely worth it,” said Helms.

Helms will attend the Colorado School of Mines and plans to major in bio-medical engineering. Her parents are Nicole and Jason Helms.

Gates to the stadium open at 7 p.m. The ceremony will follow at 8 p.m. A live stream of the ceremony will be available on the Navarro Panther Events YouTube channel. A link to the live stream can be on the Navarro High School Facebook page.

The salutatorian’s plans are to study biology at the University of Texas in Austin. Her ambitions are to one day be a nurse or a physician’s assistant.

Atrian is the daughter of Katie and Oliker Atrian.

As school principal, Perez says she sees how Rodriguez and Atrian are prime examples of what makes this class so unique and deserving.

She says an illustration of that leadership was evident Tuesday night during Senior Sunset held at Matador Stadium.

“They were just engaged in this fellowship. They were playing kickball. They were lounging on the field just having conversations, just really immersed in the moment and you will hear in the Val and Sal speeches just about the blessing and the being in the moment as a human, embracing all of the characteristics of being a human being and giving yourself grace and letting yourself experience the emotions and not having to have an answer for everything right now or know exactly what your future should hold but just to navigate each experience as it comes your way and

work through it,” said Perez.

In preparation of friends and family attending graduation, Perez reminds attendees about their stadium policy for graduation. She says the district wants to ensure a safe environment for the special celebration.

“We want to remind folks to honor our clear bag policy. There are some postings on our Seguin ISD social media pages and also the high school page about the clear bag policy and what items are permissible inside the stadium and what items are not. So, if they could help us with that, that would be awesome and then lastly, we want everyone to enjoy the ceremony and to cheer on our graduates but also stick around. We have a special surprise,” said Perez.

While flowers are welcome, district officials ask that no signs, balloons, gifts or noisemakers enter the stadium. The concession stand will also be opening at the beginning.

Seguin High School’s graduation ceremony gets underway at 8 p.m. Friday. A livestream of the ceremony will be available at https://pulse.ly/ stcr4b7hud.

House Committee Wants Servicemembers Fired Over Vaccine Rehired

(Washington, DC) -- Some House lawmakers want the Pentagon to rehire military servicemembers fired for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. The House Armed Services Committee Wednesday adopted the amendment to the annual defense policy bill. But it might not survive a meeting later this year with Senate counterparts when they have to iron out differences in the bill before Congress can pass it. Congress had the Defense Department repeal the pandemic-era mandate in 2023.

Louisiana May Classify 2 Abortion-Inducing Meds As Controlled Substances (Baton Rouge, LA) -- Louisiana is on its way criminalizing the possession of two abortion-inducing drugs. The House has approved a bill adding mifepristone [[ mif-ih-pris-tone ]] and misoprostol [[ meso-pros-tol ]] to the state’s list of controlled substances. The bill approved yesterday has the support of pro-life groups such as Louisiana Right to Life, but is opposed by the Louisiana Society of Addiction Medicine. The state Senate will need to approve changes made by the House before the bill goes to Republican Governor Jeff Landry for his signature. Louisiana would become the first state to criminalize abortion-inducing medications.

Study: Vivid Nightmares Could Be Early Indicator Of Lupus

(Cambridge, UK) -- A new study suggests vivid nightmares could be an early indicator of an autoimmune disease like lupus. Researchers at the University of Cambridge and King’s College London surveyed over 670 lupus patients and about 400 clinicians and found there was a link between nightmares and the onset of hallucinations in some lupus patients. The researchers found over 60-percent of lupus patients who experienced hallucinations reported having nightmares before the onset of lupus.

Climate Change Blamed For NY’s Worst Allergy Season In Years (Bronx, NY) -- If you suffer from allergies, there’s a good reason you’ve been coughing, sneezing and wiping your eyes and nose non-stop these past few weeks: pollen counts that are off the charts. Dr. Guy Robinson, a researcher at Fordham University in New York City, has been counting New York City’s pollen for 25 years. He says on one day last week, the pollen count was 76-hundred per cubic meter. To put that in perspective, Tuesday’s pollen count was just sixty. Dr. Robinson blames the skyrocketing numbers on climate change which he says produces springs that start earlier and last longer.
