Summer 10 min work outs

S

ummer is here again and yes, we are all now wishing we had actually followed through with our New Year resolutions to exercise daily in time to get on those favourite bikinis, trunks and one pieces we love so much! Do not despair! All is not lost! Here is a 10 minute workout which can be performed daily in the comfort of your own home/garden. However it is imperative that a proper warm up is carried out first. This should include a jog of some sort and some gentle stretching that lasts at least 10 minutes. Remember also that in the heat of the summer we transpire very quickly losing vital fluids and can become dehydrated very quickly. Please make sure that you have a bottle of water with you at all times and that you drink some in between each exercise. Each exercise can be carried out for a minute with at least 15 seconds rest time between each one. Plank with leg lift Place your forearms and toes on the floor and bring your body up into a straight, 'plank-like' position. Raise one leg up, a few inches off the floor, hold for two seconds and repeat with other leg. This exercise builds core stomach muscles. Side plank Lie on your side and push yourself up onto your forearm until your arm is at a right angle while keeping your body rigid. Repeat on other side. One leg squat and reach Place an object several feet in front of you and, standing on one leg, slowly squat down whilst reaching out to touch the object. Repeat this exercise for one minute, and then change legs. Bicycle Crunch Lie flat on you back with your hands behind your head. Bring your knees up towards your body and start a slow pedalling motion, bringing your left knee up towards your right elbow then your right knee up towards your left elbow. Push ups Place your hands a little further apart than your shoulders, and your toes on the floor. Keeping your body straight and rigid, lower yourself until your elbows are at a right angle then gradually push back up to the initial position. 30 second Sprints Get the timer ready, and then sprint as fast as you can on the spot, for 30 seconds. Rest, 15 seconds and repeat. All these exercise performed together on a regular basis will help you to tone all key areas of your body. Enjoy, work hard but please remember be sensible and safe! Victoria

hat strikes me the most each year when I do the summer listing is the fact that the churches are converted into concert halls. It is as if there was an encouragement to go back in these sacred places for one reason or another… I like the revival of these historic monuments and with music coming out from great musicians, you feel overwhelmed by the melodies. It is just fantastic and it does not happen so much during the year. Have a great summer ! In this issue, you will find good addresses to go to to have a nice time out… so enjoy ! Just between you and me, I give you my secret recipe to make the most of your summer in the Lot : a bit of jazz, blues, gospel, baroque music for the ears, local products at the marchés gourmands or at some fantastic restaurants for the mouth, walks and exhibitions for the eyes, wine for the nose and the palate, and the gentle touch of the sun on your skin… Bon été ! Sophie

Ashes to Ashes…

W

e looked out of our kitchen window and were sadly forced to conclude that flights in or out of Bergerac airport would almost certainly be cancelled, we had friends arriving the next day. The sky all around us was black with smoke and ash. We were surprised that the fallout from the Icelandic volcano had reached the Lot valley. No-one had predicted this. Eyjafjallajökull… no, the cat has not run over my key-board, that is the name of the volcano but you all knew that of course. Then we heard laughter and gaiety from our neighbours on all sides, they were all in their gardens having a whale of a time. Were they celebrating the grounding of all flights? I had to find out. Imagine my relief when, through eyes streaming with tears from the smoke, I saw that it was not volcanic ash that had turned the summer skies black...they were all barbecuing. Yes, it's the time of the year when all real men, pausing only to put on a silly pinnie (tablier) step forward and, without any thought for their own safety, fire up the barbecue; willingly sacrificing eyebrows and upper body hair in order to supply friends and loved ones with alfresco (en plein air) culinary delights. There are several theories as to the origins of the word “barbecue” but I like the French version, based on the roasting en plein air of a whole animal, could it have been “barbe à queue”, snout to tail. Also, strictly speaking, what we call barbecuing is really only grilling out of doors, to qualify as an actual, true blue (or well done) barbie you have to use marinades or sauces. Well, I could ramble on a lot more on this great subject but I'm suddenly feeling a bit peckish (peckeesh) so here is...

Tina's Simple Marinade : Ideal for most Meats, Fish and Poultry. ½ cup tomato ketchup ½ cup soy sauce. ¼ cup clear honey. 2 inch piece of ginger, grated. 4 cloves of garlic, crushed. 5 tbsp of Floc de Gascogne. 1 tsp cinq parfums (Chinese five spice) . 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary.

s you wind your way through the beautiful Cahors vineyards towards Vire-sur-Lot, you'll find tucked away Le Caillau, the Lot's first pottery painting and crafts café. Choose from a wide selection of pottery to paint such as mugs, plates, teapots and money boxes, or a selection of craft activities like colouring sheets, crayons, scrap books, scissors and glue. To help fuel your creative imagination, a coffee and a selection of beautifully decorated cakes you'll find hard to resist should help you on your way. Pottery painting is for all ages. Baby handprints make beautiful gifts, kids paint pottery as keepsakes and adults can create whole dinner sets. So, how does it work? Select the item you'd like to paint and then get creative. We have a selection of stamps and stencils to get you started. When you're finished, sit back and admire your handiwork. We'll glaze and fire your pottery which takes a few days. The pottery is fully usable, and dishwasher safe. If you're a group looking for an activity, Le Caillau is perfect, just give us a call. But we're not just all about crafts. We serve a range of freshly made baguettes and salads for lunch daily. Hot meals for group bookings can be arranged on request. We're also available for kids' parties and private hire in the evenings.

Boysenberries : an Exotic Berry Thriving in the Lot

F

anny and Bob Dillon – yes, that really is his name – have been living in their waterside mill for 14 years. After colourful careers in yacht racing, the wine trade and the media, they took 2 years out to travel with their daughter around Africa. After so much adventure, they couldn't settle in crowded England or Ireland, so came to a secluded spot near Salviac by the Abbaye Nouvelle. Here, three years ago, they had the idea to bring boysenberry plants from New Zealand and start a pick your own plantation – the first in France. They have found that the crops thrive in the extreme lotois climate, producing an abundant harvest throughout July. They can withstand the cold, they flourish in the heat and the only danger is that heavy rain when the flowers are out can wreck the formation of the berries. Fanny, a cordon bleu herself, loves to experiment with recipes. Apart from healthy juices, delicious ice cream, traditional tarts, jams and pickles, the rich red colour of the berries makes them ideal to add to sauces and gravies to jazz up game and adorn foie gras. The health benefits are quite staggering. They are high in Vitamin C and fibre, contain high levels of anthocyanins, which work as antioxidants to help fight free radical damage in the body. In fact their level is twice that of blueberries, making them a super super food. They also have potent anticarcinogen, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. So why not spend a day this July picking boysenberries with family or friends in a beautiful, riverside setting, where you will be sure to receive a warm welcome? Vickie You can find the Moulin de Labarde on the D673 between Gourdon and Salviac or look out for the Dillons at local market in Cazals. Contact 05 65 41 88 43 or bobdillon@free.fr.

One Person's Junk

Y

ou know when it's spring/summer again because you start to see posters for vide-greniers (empty your attics) all across the region! Better known to British people as car boot sales, these events take on a whole new dimension because it's French junk and not boring old British junk! Just some of the items we have bought at such events range from pottery to garden sculpture, compost bins to paintings. In fact, it won't be long before we have to set up a stall of our own to sell off some of these treasures and create some space for new finds! The size of the vide-greniers range from half a dozen stalls in some of the tiny villages to those that take over half the town such as in Gourdon or Salviac. One of the biggest in our region is held in Souillac, usually in midSeptember, which covers the whole of the town and is a great day out. Many are held on public holidays and there are even nighttime versions. The bigger they are, the more of an event it becomes and there is often live music and special menus on offer to add to the festive atmosphere. A useful website for information about videgreniers throughout France is www.vide-greniers.org So, if you like a bargain, and believe in the old saying that 'one person's junk is another person's treasure', then you can't beat a visit to a vide-grenier! Shirley

Cahors Plage

A

fter the success of Paris Plage, Cahors has decided to take the challenge and to create a “Cahors plage”. The event was a complete success last year in Cahors with over 36 000 visitors, so the mairie has decided to repeat it! The concept is simple : under the bridge Louis Philippe, 1200 tonns of sand are being delivered to the river Lot to create a beach so that tourists and the Cadurcians have a taste of holiday in their own town ! Entrance is free and the swimming area is being supervised everyday from 1pm to 7pm. There will be activities for families and children, with a Tyrolienne (death slide) and inflatables. For those wanting slightly less physical exercise, the chess club of Cahors will also join the event. Beach volley, archery, canoeing, pétanque are also available. A restaurant installation will provide a venue for drinks and lunch and a concert twice a week. Sophie

29th Cahors Blues Festival: 10th – 17th July 2010

O

nce again the Cahors Blues Festival really has something to offer everyone. Blues, African blues, gospel, rock'n roll, soul/funk – all tastes are represented. The main focus of the festival will be Place Bessière at the top of Boulevard Gambetta and once more the 'Village' will comprise the main and secondary stages, plus boutiques and refreshment facilities. Free concerts will be staged at 5pm and 7pm with the main programme commencing at 9pm. Reservation (via the website or Office de Tourisme) is recommended for the later concert. - The full 8 day programme features two top action Saturdays. On Saturday 10th July, Bronx blues phenomenon Popa Chubby, (sponsored by Harley Davidson) and on Saturday 17th July, three time Grammy Award winner Joe Louis Walker (sponsored by La Dépêche du Midi) is performing with his band. Both artists appear under the banner 'Blues Guitar Legends'. - There are further themed evenings including 'Blues Fusion' concerts featuring Roland Tchakounte and Amar Sundy on Monday 12th and a Master Class final presentation by Fred Chapellier and students from the Cahors Collège of Music. - On Tuesday 13th, there is a 'Tremplin' (talent contest) for blues bands, and on Wednesday 14th , 'Hommage Femmes de Blues' with Nina Attal (a previous tremplin winner) and the fabulous Connie Lush and Blues Shouter (from Liverpool, UK). Best of all, this evening is completely free! - On Thursday 15th the top of the bill will be American gospel, soul and blues singer Liz McComb and her band featuring special guest Calvin Cooke on steel guitar and UK r'n b legends Nine Below Zero (including former members of Dr.Feelgood and Taste) playing the premiere partie. - Friday 16th sees 'Blues en Ville' where groups and solo artists feature once again in the cafés and bars around the town and not just in Rue Gambetta. - On Saturday 17th the grande finale has Canadian singer-songwriter Dave Goodman followed by French blues rock group 'Blues Power Band' and at 21h Joe Louis Walker and his band. This promises to be an evening to remember. Tickets and booking information are now available from the Office de Tourisme in Place François Mitterrand Cahors Tel: 05 65 53 20 65. For all information about the artists appearing during the festival, please visit: www.cahorsbluesfestival.com

SHOPPING BIEN-ETRE, SHOPPING Now is the Time for all Good Men (& Women) to Come to the Aid of the Party

S

ummer is here and the season of fetes votive is nearly upon us. Most villages will be having their annual party during the period between the latter half of June through to the end of August. The origin of fetes votive is confused. According to some, it is political and to do with voting, but this view is outweighed by the more scholarly opinions that it is a fete in praise of the local patron saint – fete voto meaning “local fete”. The fetes are sometimes preceded by a votive procession and this is the giveaway of the origins. Sadly, the candle lit processions are more and more rare among the villages, which often no longer have a resident priest. Like many Christian celebrations, the fetes votive were probably originally hi-jacked from pagan celebrations, the timing coinciding roughly with that of the Harvest Festival. Whatever the reason for having the village parties, it

is a great tradition and we should all take full advantage of the chance to enjoy the weekend's activities and mix with our neighbours. The typical fete runs from Friday night through to Sunday night, but some extend into Monday as well. There is usually a dance band and a dance floor is set up for a dinner/dance on one of the nights. A pop “covers” band will perform a concert on another night and the proceedings finish on a high note with a firework display. During the evenings there are funfair rides and stalls (including the obligatory dodgems) and buvettes strategically sited in the streets to ensure no one goes thirsty. Farther to the south of France, fetes often include the running of bulls through the streets and a variety of quirky village competitions. Some fetes of course will occur on the same weekends as those of other villages, but within a local area, clashes are avoided. This way the locals can go from village to village each weekend and party throughout the summer. If you want to plan your summer partying, you might try visiting the web site http://www.fetes-et-foires.com/dpt-46-lot.php for a list of villages and party dates. John

“So the Memory Never Dies”

T

wo days after D-Day in June 1944, a group of American OSS agents (Office of Strategic Services) were parachuted into rural Cantal to sabotage the German Das Reich troups on route to Normandy and also to assist the Maquis in the Lot with training, arms and much needed moral support. This top secret operation was code-named Emily and the twelve men, who had volunteered for this mission on the understanding that they were not covered by the Geneva Convention in the event of being taken prisoner, all survived and successfully completed their objective. It is only now that this story can be told – the OSS mission, which involved 13 different operational groups all over France, has been classified up until just a few years ago. Emily was the first of these missions. In 2009 a group of Americans residing in the Lot got together with the aim of promoting Franco-American relations. The first project, “So the Memory Never Dies,” was the translation into French of Emily's mission statement to pay homage to these men and acquaint the French with the role they played. At 3.30pm on July 10th, they will be presenting their work to the Museum of the Resistance. You can join them in paying tribute to these brave men, in the presence of the Museum Director, the Mayor of Cahors Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure and the American Consul in Toulouse, David Brown. The official presentation will immediately be followed by the opening of the Cahors Blues Festival, in the huge car park next to the Préfecture and Résistance Museum.

Golf vs Marmite Q. What have golf and Marmite got in common? A. People seem to either love or hate them. Personally I love Marmite but have never acquired a liking for golf, which makes it all the more surprising that we and many of our chums never miss an opportunity to visit Le Neuf du Bouysset, the only golf course in the Lot Valley. The reason being that as well as a superb 9 hole golf course set in 15 hectares of beautiful, undulating countryside with a club house and shop, Aart and Monique Voorn have created their beautiful restaurant, the '3X3'. The restaurant has a new French chef, Emmanuel, who enthusiastically prepares lunches from Tuesday to Sunday with a menu that changes every week. You can choose the set price menu offering 4 dishes for 20 euros or just choose individual dishes for as little as 4 euros. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner in a lovely restaurant, with a magnificent colonial style terrace in a truly beautiful setting and be assured of a warm, friendly and attentive welcome from Aart, Monique and their staff. The restaurant hosts monthly Indonesian buffet nights which are proving very popular, so booking is essential. The next is on June 25th and then 18th July and 22nd August. There are also other regular themed events for special occasions and private parties/group bookings can be catered for. The golf course opened last year but the fairways were not at their best due to the hot summer, now, after extensive work, Aart says the course is playing beautifully and they have also hired Thomas a golf pro to give lessons to groups and individuals. Clubs, balls, trolleys and buggies can be hired. There is a beautiful swimming pool available for members and guests of the Chambres d'hôtes. Roly M Golf Le Neuf. St Martin Le Redon. Opening times are 8.00am to 7.00pm Tuesday to Sunday for golf, food or just a drink. For more information call 05 65 30 34 00 (English spoken) or check out www.le-neuf-golf.eu

here can't be many things in life more enjoyable than sitting on the terrace of a Bar, in the warm summer evening sunshine with your favourite cold drink, watching the Lot river meander by. One of the best places to experience this is surely La Batelière overlooking the river in Puy l'Evêque. Lucy and Alain Perrier, new owners of La Batelière since October 2009, have extended and developed the original bar into a full restaurant with regular live music. The bar/restaurant is open from 11.00am to 11.00pm every day except Monday. They offer a wide range of food options from Tapas, through value for money Plat du Jour, on to delicious seafood and fish including oysters, mussels, clams, crab, swordfish and sea bass, all fresh every day. Their style of cooking is Mediterranean and they also offer plenty of choices for those of us who enjoy a good steak or beefburger. Food is served indoors or outdoors on one of the two terraces overlooking the river. Live concerts are held every two weeks with a special themed meal on offer. Reservations are strongly recommended to avoid disappointment and bookings are welcome for large parties or special events. Roly R Forthcoming events include.... 18th June - 7.30pm Mamzelle Lily, cabaret chansons française. 19th June- 7.00pm Fête de la musique featuring, Les Jazzamis and les Banderas (jazz manouche) 8th July - 7.30pm Kevano, chanson populaire For info on future events call 05 65 36 95 31 (English spoken) or check out www.labateliere.canalblog.com

BRIVE-SOUILLAC AIRPORT or Aéroport de Brive - Vallée de la Dordogne to give it its new official title!

A

t last, after years in the planning, lots of controversy (not least about its name!) and numerous promises of opening dates, the new airport between Souillac and Brive is finally expected to be opening on the 15th

June. This offers a great alternative to Bergerac airport for those of us living in the Lot. The first flights include Cityjet to London City airport, three times per week on a trial basis - great for a week-end break to London or to link up to other UK towns. Cityjet is a subsidiary of Air France / KLM and their prices start at 59 euros one way including all taxes and other charges. According to their website, most of the June flights are already sold out so the demand is obviously high. Air France is also expected to begin flights to Paris from July. Talks are supposedly going on with a few of the British and Irish budget airlines but there is nothing definite yet and, with some of the current antipathy from many French airports towards Ryanair's negotiation tactics, it may be some time before we see these airlines here. The new airport is located in Nespouls, between Brive and Souillac and near the A20 autoroute. Shirley

Are you an Ambassadeur Lotois?

I

f, like most of us who live in this beautiful region, you get lots of visitors throughout the year, then this great scheme could be for you. It is available to anyone living in the Lot and it entitles you to free entry to dozens of tourist attractions in our region when you are accompanied by one or more paying guests. So, you save money seeing some of our great tourist sites such as Le Gouffre de Padirac, La Forêt des Singes or Les Grottes de Lacave to name but a few of the 50+ attractions included in the scheme. If you are feeling really charitable, you might decide to share the cost of the tickets with your visitors so, for example, if there're two of you, you each pay just half price. Shirley For further details on how to get a card and become an “Ambassadeur” for our region, go to the website www.tourismelot.com and look under the section “coin des lotois” or telephone on 05 65 35 07 09. The card is valid for a year and, once registered, is automatically renewed each year.
