Mimie & Olivier de Lestrade

he “dodus” in question are Olivier and Mimie de Lestrade who left Provence to start a new life in the Lot in 1997. In 2000, they opened the “Aux Dodus d'Audhuy” restaurant and “chambres de charme” between Puy L'Evêque and Duravel. Very quickly, their reputation for hospitality and home cooking became widespread… One could almost say that the restaurant gained a “cult” status in the area! However, many of us were very sad to learn that years of trying to turn us into “dodus” with their generous portions, were to come to an end. Olivier and Mimie had decided to call time.

LES DODUS EN VILLE

Not ones to sit back and retire gracefully, having spent the past few years on a number of various projects around Puy L'Evêque, they have succumbed, once again, to the pull of cooking. Good news for many of us who can remember the soirées passed in the company of Olivier and Mimie and, of course, their cooking! The “Dodus” are returning to the kitchen…"en ville" this time.

For more information call

“Aux Dodus en ville” will be opening its doors, on the main D811 through Puy L'Evêque centre, at the beginning of May, offering us this time more of a bistro experience. Although the restaurant does not have the same feel as that at Audhuy, with a much smaller and intimate dining area, we are confident of the same quality, hospitality and atmosphere. It wouldn't be “Aux Dodus” without it! Richard

Les Dodus en Ville will be opening for lunchtime hours only, 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock, serving fresh seasonal produce with a hint of the Mediterranean.

rance is the world's most popular tourist destination and its renowned wines are probably one of the main reasons, why many people plan their trip around the most famous wine regions such as Bordeaux or Burgundy. The wines of Cahors in the Lot region are relatively undiscovered but they have an amazing history and a tour of the numerous vineyards in our area is a bit different to the usual wine-tourist trail. Cahors wine is known as the "black wine" because of its characteristic inky colour and Cahors AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) wine must be made from at least 70% Malbec grapes blended with Merlot or Tannat. The wine from Cahors was famous in the middle ages and was the favourite of Henry II of England, Pope John XXII and Emperor Peter I of Russia. However, exports in general were hindered by Cahors' remoteness from the sea and then natural disasters such as the phylloxera disease in the 19th century and an extreme frost in 1956 which meant that it was only in 1971 that Cahors red wine achieved AOC status. You will also find some very pleasant white and rosé wines here but these do not have the AOC designation and can only be sold as Vin de Pays (wines of the region). Nowadays, the fame of Cahors wine is spreading with export sales, to America in particular, growing every year and numerous awards being won by many of the vineyards. The city has also initiated a number of events to raise the profile of its wine including the International Malbec Day being held in Cahors between the 20th and 23rd May this year (www.french-malbec.com) Many of the numerous vineyards host tours and wine tastings (une dégustation). Full details of these can be found at the Cahors Tourist Office, or be sent by La Maison du Vin de Cahors (tel: 05 65 23 22 24) or on the web, but a few examples are:

WINE SPECIAL EDITORIAL Every year, it is the same thing: we always feel that Spring is like a rebirth of nature and people seem to emerge from a kind of hibernation… the return of the sun calls us outdoors to enjoy all the events which are organised throughout the region. In this issue, I wanted to highlight the fact that wine tourism is gradually developing in the Lot. The Malbec Days fair is a huge event celebrating wine, it's time that the image of Malbec was brightened up and they're doing a great job of that! The vide-greniers are also back along with the flower fairs… So enjoy, and have a great time out !!! Bonne lecture ! Sophie

Malbec Days : May 20th - 23rd Malbec Days is an event in Cahors which celebrates the Malbec variety of grape, currently in its second year. Its purpose is to discuss the grape's international presence in the world of wine. It was primarily produced in Cahors and Argentina but there are areas of California, other parts of France and Chile that also favour this variety. The event is spread over four days in May: 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd. The theme for 2010 is "Malbec Terroirs, Terroir Malbec" and there are many different events for you to attend!

ave you ever dreamed of owning your own vineyard? Picking, sorting, blending, tasting and then seeing your very own wine being bottled and labelled? It's a big dream, probably out of the question for most people like you and I. But what if that dream could be achieved on a much smaller scale?

s you drive through the endless vineyards and rural countryside surrounding Puy L'Evêque, you would be forgiven for not noticing the beating heart of an international enterprise. Of course, some of the vineyards in this area are known the world over but in one of them lies a business which is surpassing the income of the “family vineyard”! In the sleepy little village of Vire-sur-Lot, is the head office of Distri-Coutale, whose products can be found from Sydney to Chicago…and a few places in between. Approximately 10 years ago, Philippe Bernède was on one of his regular “wine sales” trips to London, where he witnessed the horror of a waiter huffing and puffing over a stubborn cork. Unfortunately, the delivery didn't end well as the waiter broke the cork in front of several experts, and the bottle was sent back! However, having witnessed this, Philippe decided that there must be an easier way, foolproof even. That night, he began work on the first designs that would yield a truly revolutionary corkscrew – the Coutale. The first “waiter's friend” style corkscrew that would use a double step mechanism, for smoother cork extraction, and also reverse the application of force so that pushing down would lever out the cork. Since that day, the range of these waiters' friends has grown to seven different models, all with a unique advantage for those wine-opening “chores”, and has won a number of gold and silver medals for new inventions in various inventions fairs. The little company deals with some of the great names in the business, like Screwpull and Peugeot, resulting in an almost exponential sales growth. However, Philippe will not stop there, as there are always perfections to be made, and he is not short of a few ideas… Richard See the range on www.coutale.com - A wide range of corkscrew can be found at Gamm Vert and in various shops

Faire Chabrol Regular readers of Le Forty-Six will have noticed that we do like to take a peep at some of the customs and traditions that we find in our lovely region, so I confidently turned my attention to faire chabrol. It's an old rural custom, dating back to the middle ages, which combines the delights of food and drink. When you have finished your soup, simply pour wine over the back of your spoon into your soup bowl and then drink this straight from the bowl. This action is sometimes curiously described as "to drink like a goat". I also discovered that this custom is fast disappearing, is mainly enjoyed by older folk and was often frowned upon by chic townies... Roly

The company "Mes Vignes", at Montcuq, offer you the chance to rent a section of a vineyard and participate in the wine making process from start to finish. In February, you can visit your chosen vineyard and see your selected vines and the environment in which your wine is produced. Then from the end of August to mid October you can spend a day picking the grapes and follow their journey to the winery and oenologist's laboratory; and the following year, from the end of February to the end of April you spend a further day at the Domaine, tasting your wine and learning about its maturation process. If more than one variety of grape was grown, you get the chance to help blend the different wines then design your own personalised label for your wine bottles. Mes Vignes are based in the LOT but work with fifteen different vineyard domains throughout France. This provides a broad range of wines available to chose from: Côtes du Rhône, Sancerre, Cahors, here in the Lot at Château Cantelauze, in Duravel, to name just a few. Vine-share is a refreshing approach to the age old tradition of winemaking steeped in generations of French family history, so why not have a go. Mes Vignes offer a wide range of gift packages to suit most occasions: Mothers and Fathers Days, Wedding anniversaries, Retirement gifts, Valentine's Day and many more. They know how much we love our wine and are very happy to help us enjoy it from beginning to end… So turn that dream into a delicious, wine making reality! Prices start from €194 including a welcome pack, the section of vineyard, a personal login account on the website allowing you to track the progress of your wine throughout the year, the days at the vineyard itself and the personalised bottles of your wine. Roast Loin of Pork with a Violet mustard, Cahors sauce & mashed potatoes

Ingredients (for 4 people) 1 loin of pork weighing approximately 600 g 75 g of chopped leeks (the white only) 50 g of chopped onions 50 g of minced carrots 20 g of flour 500ml of Cahors red wine 500ml of Brown Stock 50 g of Violet flavoured mustard 100 ml of water Salt, Pepper, Oil 10 g butter - Preheat the oven to 220°C. Season the pork with the salt and pepper, oil it well and add the water. Turn and baste the pork regularly so that it is nicely browned on all sides. At about the midpoint of cooking, add half the vegetables and brush the pork with the violet mustard, keeping some in reserve for later. - Check the pork by piercing with a skewer (the juices should run clear), then lower the temperature to 180°C to finish off and give a nice crust. Take out the pork and cover in aluminium foil. - While the roast is cooking, melt the butter in a mid-sized pan and sweat off the remaining vegetables. Add the flour and mix well, then the wine, and leave to reduce to a third of the original volume. Deglaze the pork baking tray with the stock and add to the saucepan, season and reduce by half until a nice thick sauce is obtained. - Place the sauce in the blender and add the remaining mustard. Season again if required. - Cut the roast in 1/2cm slices and arrange on a platter, covering the slices evenly with the sauce. - Goes very well with home-made mashed potatoes. Bon appetit! Talk's Cheap

I

f you make regular overseas calls you know how costly this is. Cheap deals from France Telecom help, but there are cheaper alternatives with unlimited call duration. If you have an ADSL Internet connection, you can talk for unlimited time around the world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe – at low, low prices! These systems are called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). Businesses have been basing their switchboards on VOIP for several years. Now you can use the same facilities at home. Many of you will have heard of Skype. With Skype, you can talk to a person at a distant computer and using webcams, you can also see each other. You can also call land-lines or mobiles from Skype, a little more expensive than Skype to Skype, but still cheaper than from a landline. If all you want to do is call someone's land line, there are other options. Two systems are I n t e r n e t c a l l s a n d Vo i p w i s e . U s i n g headphones, you can call direct from your computer, or you can make a call from your handset to the distant telephone, via the website, for just a 5 cents connection fee.

O

ver the past two years an economic crisis has stormed over Europe like never before and we're all left trying to predict future trends. No doubt, many readers of the Forty-Six have been affected by the crisis, some more than others; for the fortunate amongst us little or nothing has changed. So what can we expect for the coming year? After a dramatic fall in property sales, numbers together with a fall in property prices in 2008, the second half of 2009 showed some improvement in the French property market. Property prices fell only 4% in 2009 which is less than initially anticipated. Prices for apartments, in particular, remained quite steady, encouraged by the introduction of new tax laws, designed by the French government to motivate purchasers and aimed at the apartment market. Unfortunately, this doesn't affect the market for other properties.

e had a great response to the feature on our Nursery and Landscape Design Company in the Forty-Six last Spring, you made our open days a real success. So this year, we're giving you another opportunity to visit our garden-lover's heaven and ask our staff for advice and information on getting the best from your garden. Come and walk along paths through areas of flowering shrubs, trees and varieties of rose bushes. You'll find here a most significant choice of olive trees and Mediterranean plants. This spring, you can choose from a range of annuals to give beautiful colours and sweet perfumes in your garden. We pride ourselves on our environmental conservation practices; looking for new production processes and searching for new species adapted to our region. We are now offering new varieties of

Calls to UK mobiles cost as little as .083 cents a minute and you can send a text message (SMS) for .048 cents. To take advantage of these systems, first access the websites: www.skype.com www.internetcalls.com or www.voipwise.com Use the free download and this gives you an icon on your desktop that opens a window with dialling options. You need to register and set up an account. If you want to make calls from the website, you can do so without downloading the software and there is an option to make a free test call. To make calls direct from your PC, you need a headset or a set of speakers and separate microphone. The advantage of the separate microphone and speakers is that more than one person can join in the conversation at the same time. Don't worry if you are a technophobe. Matt at TeleDigital/Numerique (Tel:06 88 88 28 62) can demonstrate the different systems, set them up and give you a brief training course. Once installed, your telephone bills evaporate and you will be able to chat all night with family and friends, wherever they are, as though they are in the room! John Many prospective buyers have postponed their plans to purchase in France because of the economic crisis. The question for them now is, do we wait or do we purchase a property now? All statistics show that we probably reached the bottom of the property price falls last winter, yet it is still a buyers' market. The potential is enormous as prospective buyers can really profit from this situation. They can afford to be very choosy and take time to select the best properties in their price range. The very low interest rates helped curtail the fall in property prices. We have the lowest Euribor interest rates (0,70% in January 2010) since the creation of the euro (1999). This gives prospective buyers a chance to get a 'friendly' mortgage, that is, if the bank wants to help! plants such as "dry gardens". In order to improve our know-how, we have joined the landscaping system "Atout Vert" which notifies us about new techniques in several areas. Our landscape design company doesn't only plant and sow: we fuse the mineral with the vegetal to create an original design according to your wishes, mixing flagstones, woodchips, mulch and stone walls and sympathetic planting. To provide ambience, we can produce a secluded spot with mood lighting, architectural structures, water features and seating. Whatever you have in mind, we can bring to life! any people find it hard to believe that there are orchids growing wild all over France, and that the Lot is a particularly popular department for this beautiful species to choose as its home. European orchids are less extravagantly showy than their tropical counterparts but most of the species found in France have nonetheless a very special beauty. The country as a whole hosts 150 species, of which nearly fifty are found in the Lot, and the diversity of their appearance is remarkable. Their favourite habitat also varies greatly depending on the species. They can be found on sunny hillsides and in shady forests, by the side of a main road and very probably in your garden if you live in the countryside. Most orchids are not hard to spot, although sometimes hybrids can develop making identification more difficult, and there exists one or two species whose small size, lack of bright colour and resemblance to a stalk of grass make identification problematic. Finding them is what we really need to talk about here. There is a national project organised by the Société Française d'Orchidophilie (SFO) currently taking place in France to document the frequency and habitats of orchids across the whole country, with one of the main goals being to give protection to the rarer species. Each department organises its activities individually then the results are collated nationally by SFO. The Lot Nature association commenced its orchid hunting endeavour in 2005, but there are still some areas and even entire communes that have not been searched at all, so they would welcome more volunteers to join the program as orchid hunters. The task involves walking in the countryside, spotting orchids and recording the details (species, date, precise location, habitat) on a specially designed form which can be found on the organisation's website: www.lotnature.fr along with instructions and advice, maps, lists of areas with few observations up until now, plus photographs and articles on each orchid of the Lot. Don't delay – the orchids are already flowering and most of them will be gone by the middle of June! For further details please see www.lotnature.fr or contact Hester Coley for advice in English on hester.coley@shape.uk.com

Le Muguet in May

A

Sophie Lascombes

s the first of May approaches, you will notice florists, market stalls and even supermarkets selling pots and posies of lily of the valley. It is a tradition in France to give Muguet des bois as a portebonheur (lucky charm) to bring luck and welcome the spring weather. In fact, I have been told that it is positively unlucky not to have a bunch in the house on May Day. Charles IX is said to have started the tradition in 1561. He received a bouquet to bring him luck and happiness and loved it so much that he gave every lady in his court a fragrant posy. However, it is likely that Muguet has always been a potent symbol of the resurgence of spring, blooming as it does so perfectly around the time of Beltane – the pagan spring festival.

Flower Power Flowers are all about love and relationships between people... Superstition or tradition, you can trace their meaning in french and their meanings in folklore... http://home.comcast.net/~bryant.katherine/flowers.html English - French - Meaning Lily of the valley - Muguet - Return of happiness Tulip - Tulipe - Declaration of love, fame Daffodil - Jonquille - Chivalry, unrequited love or regard Buttercup - Bouton d'or - Riches, memories of childhood or ingratitude and childlessness Hyacinth - Jacinthe - Jealousy, constancy or sorrow Forget-me-not - Myosotis - True love Luckily in the Lot, these shade-loving beauties adore growing under trees down by the river. They all but disappear for most of the year, but by mid-spring, their characteristic dark green leaf spears have appeared and usually, just in time for May, the sweet-smelling white bells hanging like jewels along the stalks are ready for picking. May 1st is a national holiday in France: la Fête du Travail or Labour Day. It ushers in a popular month, not only because of the return of good weather, but also because it has more official holidays than any other, with Ascension Day and Pentecost, the other two. As May Day is the only day in the year when it is permitted to sell muguet from your gate or in the village square (but better ask at the mairie first), without a license, you should have many opportunities to make sure you give all the people you care about a brin de muguet. So while city workers try to faire le pont – make a bridge between the holidays and the weekends so that they can take a mini-break, in the Lot owners of gites and hotels are hoping that theirs will be the chosen spot. Certainly, a welcoming bouquet de Muguet should help ensure their visitors return. Vickie

SHOPPING BIEN-ETRE, SHOPPING A Real Enthusiasm for the Lot "White Stone Black Wine" by Amanda Lawrence, author and mother of four, was first published in June 2008. In it, she reveals her great love for living in this part of France. I found her enthusiasm contagious and it made me appreciate the specialities of the region. I say "specialities" deliberately. A confessed "foodie", Amanda talks of wine and food with humour and gusto and comes up with many interesting regional facts on wine making, farming and historical data on Eleanor of Aquitaine. After moving to France and researching the area, Amanda at last found she had time to fulfill her long-held ambition to write. Admiring writers like Bill Bryson and Chris Stewart, she decided on an anecdotal memoir. The book has had nothing but good reviews. Amanda is currently writing a sequel, due out at the end of the year. She intends to include more local history and continue the stories of her eccentric French neighbours, wonderful meals

and fine wines. In the longer term, she is also planning a novel about Santiago de Compostella and the pilgrim route. What has been the delay for the sequel, you may ask. Unfortunately, Amanda was diagnosed with breast cancer, the recovery from which has taken up two years of her life. Now recovered and with the kind of courage and joie de vivre we expect of her, she has become involved with fund-raising to raise awareness about how treatable this disease is, if caught in time. She is organizing a Pink Ball on 27th June for cancer research and wants to make it an unforgettable evening. So all that's left to do is to raise a glass of black wine to our local author and wish her every success in the future. It's nice to see Yusuf, formerly Cat Stevens, recording again. Compared with his 2006 album “Another Cup”, this album released in 2009, is more intimate and takes the listener back to the singer's heyday of the early 1970s, when albums like “Tea for the Tillerman” and “Catch Bull at 4” were in most people's collections. It was produced by Yussuf himself, aided and abetted by respected producer Martin Terefe and introduces 11 new self-penned songs, very much in the style of yesteryear – strong melodies, thought-provoking lyrics about our world and its problems on songs like “The Rain” and “This Glass World”. No outstanding tracks but all pleasant to listen to with guest appearances from James Morrison, Michelle Branch and Holly Williams. Haïti Update In the last issue of the Forty-Six we wrote of Pierre Mériguet and his adoption of a little girl in 2009 from Haïti. Since the earthquake at the start of 2010, Haïti has been thrown into chaos. Fears of child trafficking have meant all adoptions have been blocked for the foreseeable future. This is putting unbearable pressure on orphanages who can't take in any more children orphaned as a result of the earthquake. Last year, France gave a home to over 700 Haïtian orphans; it is the country where most Haïtian orphans are successfully re-homed. "Association Port aux Petits Princes" has been set up, by parents of Haïtian children, as an organisation to aid one of the largest crèches in Haiti – "Notre Dame de la Nativité". The situation at the crèche is still dire. While the original building was completely destroyed, killing 60 children at the same time, temporary lodging was built as a priority for the 80 orphans who survived the earthquake. They now call these simple wooden shacks home. The director, Eveline Louis Jacques and her team (nannies, cooks and other support staff) are sleeping in leaky, damp tents as efforts get underway to build

Lose Weight Without Dieting!

here are numerous fad diets and schemes that claim rapid weight loss but these often only work in the short term and can even be bad for your health. A much better approach is to learn how to change your eating habits for life. Patricia Perrin, a Food Technologist and Nutrition Advisor set up business in Cahors in 2008 and uses her training to help people get fit and stay fit by following a balanced diet. She is a member of a professional nutrition network, "MAIGRIR 2000" and uses their specific Programme in her work, a system that makes the bold claim of enabling you to lose weight without dieting. Her advice covers areas such as understanding the nutritional value of foods, the digestive system and weight control for all ages from youngsters to pensioners, plus specialist groups such as pregnant women, new mothers and athletes. She helps people to understand what constitutes a balanced diet, how to adopt a healthy eating

temporary accommodation for them. This is an urgent priority as the monsoon season has already begun. The mood at the orphanage is upbeat, but Eveline and her staff are understandably tired. They still urgently need help and donations in order to rebuild their crèche. Of the 80 children remaining at the crèche, 60 are already in the process of being adopted, the others need godparents to sponsor their upkeep and wellbeing – clothes, education and medical assistance. As one parent who has visited Haïti told me, "nothing is free in Haïti - you pay for everything". Any financial help you can give is greatly appreciated and goes directly to the crèche "Notre Dame de la nativité". At the beginning of March, six sapeurs-pompiers from the south of France flew there to help kick start the rebuilding of the crèche. practice and ultimately how to be selfsufficient in terms of controlling your weight. This programme can help improve your overall health as bad eating habits can lead to serious health disorders including migraines, tiredness, skin conditions, hormone problems, digestive difficulties and eating disorders. This Programme is not just a case of giving nutritional advice but also support. The first stage is a personalised dietary assessment based on an analysis of your diet, lifestyle and goals. Patricia will then design a tailored dietary plan to suit your lifestyle and your objectives. Thereafter you will have regular one-to-one sessions to monitor your progress and review your goals. You will receive the support necessary to change your behaviour and your diet, learning more about food and how to be in control of your eating habits.
