A Bonnet for your Kitchen!

large choice of lighting to compliment your chosen style.

How many hours do you spend in your kitchen each day? As long as in bed each night? So in the same way you would find a good mattress for your health and comfort, you deserve a kitchen that is ergonomically designed for ease of use, for convenience and styled to be aesthetically pleasing, to make your daily routine as comfortable as your night's.

The showroom is 220m² and the kitchens are presented fully fitted to allow you to view all aspects of the quality design and fitting, and to help you imagine the end result in your own home. Whether you're building a new house, have a renovation project or just want to renew or revamp your tired kitchen, Véronique, Jean-Luc and their technical team will be able to find the right solution for you. Remember also that you can benefit from a 5.5% reduction in TVA (VAT) for renovations and renewals!

Arthur Bonnet is a well-known French brand for kitchen styling and installation. Created in 1927, the brand has gained people's trust for its quality and design using French crafted units from Nantes. Did you know that in France only 50 - 55% of houses are equipped with a fully fitted kitchen compared to 70 - 90% in many other European countries? Véronique and Jean-Luc Vanachte, of Arthur Bonnet, Cahors, will help you tailor your dream kitchen to your specific needs. Working within your budget, they will advise on fitments, materials and installation. Whatever your choice of finish, from quartz to granite, glass to stainless steel, wood to slate. They also offer a

Open all Hours “Open all hours”, the popular BBC series staring the late Ronnie Barker and David Jason is how I would describe ourselves. Mind you, it's debatable which one of us is “Granville”! We came to France four years ago and found a Quercy farmhouse with land on the outskirts of Prayssac. Today this has become our home and until last year we ran a successful B&B here. The business is good in the summer but non-existent in the winter, so we decided to run a business that would provide income 52 weeks a year! However, since we started last November, it has not been plain sailing. We had a shop in

Gourdon for three months but due to the credit crunch and unreliable supplier we decided to set up at home using our separate annex as our shop. Our aim is simple: to provide expats with the “goodies” they miss from back in the UK and which are not available in France at reasonable prices. We import a wide range of popular brands found back in the UK: smoked and unsmoked bacon, wet and cured, several varieties of sausages, crumpets, hot crossbuns, sliced bread, varied pies and pasties, vegetarian items, curries, Poppadum, different flour, oxo, and many other items to mention here. We are now supplying bacon and sausage to local hotels. Later this summer, we plan to offer customers cream teas and “tasting sessions" of our stocked bacon, sausage and curries. gathe, Gariguette, Clairy, Charlotte, Aromas, Marias des Bois? What are they? They're the choice of French strawberry varieties in the local markets! And along with cherries, apricots and melons in July and August the most delicious fruit season begins now. Get your fresh 5-a-day fruits, vegetables and salads and appreciate the seasonal local produce as the SW French do. There's no “cold chain” so buy daily ! As you know, French markets and even supermarkets are part of the French experience when you're on holiday. This part of the world is famous for duck “dans tous ses états”, but there are other specialities during the summer : Fénelon (the local aperitif), salade Quercynoise – a salad of nuts, goats cheese, duck and gesiers (giblets – served warm) and pine nuts. Rocamadour goats' cheese also known as Cabécou, made even more delicious when served with a drizzle of honey! Then, there's the Quercy melons : serve them plain; or with a walnut oil cream with duck, in

Cahors Blues Festival : 5 Days of Blues

You'll also see in the markets miracles of flaky pastry: I couldn't possibly make one of these, so I buy my Pastis (the Lotois name) or La Tourtière (the Lot-et-Garonne name) a know-how passed down through the ages and typical of the region. Best slightly warm to appreciate all the flavors of apples and Armagnac. There are also the "Marchés Gourmands", usually held from 7pm and well advertised in Le Forty-Six magazine. These take place in villages in the Lot during the season. You turn up and pay for fresh duck and local specialities which are cooked for you there a n d t h e n . Yo u c a n a l s o b u y accompaniments and wine and sit with friends in the open air enjoying your food al fresco. Everything goes well with the local Cahors wine – red or rosé. Finally, enjoying all the markets means an early start – markets start setting up at 5am and they close at noon. Bon appétit ! Gill

Vintner's Almanac June/July

T

he stumpy vines, which f i n a l l y sprouted leaves and little buds this spring, are finally starting to do what we've been waiting for. Over a period of about a week, some time in June, the vines will explode with clusters of tiny white flowers. Admittedly, they're nothing you'd be thrilled to find at the florist, but when their little centers start to swell, you know that grapes are on their way. Given how long we were staring at rows of bare stumps, things now move incredibly fast. The flowers swell into grapes in a matter of weeks. By August, the vines will be covered in clusters of proper grapes – still green, maybe, and still acidic, but well on their way to developing all the sugars they'll need to produce wine. This is a pivotal stage in the whole process, one of the most important and anxious times of year for the winegrower. This year, with all the sun we've had in May, the development of the vines is about 10 days earlier than normal. That seems like a good thing. Much of the work at this time of year involves positioning the shoots so that they continue to grow properly onto the wires that will support the weight of the grapes. As the clusters develop, some will need to be thinned out to keep the yield low and the quality high. And then, there is treating the vines to fight the mildew and other beasties just waiting to turn all the lovely grapes black. But once those flowers pollinate and the grapes start to swell, it's smooth sailing (well, perhaps not quite – check back next issue). Greg

FAMILY DAY OUT La Ferme de la Tille – Prayssac

L

a Ferme de la Tille is a perfect place to go to with the children to get to know about, not only, vineyards (yes, it's never too early for the kids to start learning about the world's favourite beverage!) but also nature in general. Take a treasure hunt, find educational paths to discover animals, birds and fauna along with chestnut groves and the River Lot, foxes and badgers. There is also a mini farm with ducks, geese, sheep and donkeys. Come and see the rabbits, guinea pigs and goats. Plus the vineyard encapsulates the whole of what it is like to live and grow vines in the Lot over many generations. There is a well-marked trail, packed information boards, booklets in English, Dutch and French and quizzes for the children. Monsieur Redon, the owner, is an enthusiast for all that he does. “There's more to La Tille than the Animals”, he says – and he's right! Cap Nature is an adventure park in the trees, a sort of playground for all ages suspended in the canopy of a magnificent oak forest in Pradines, just fifteen minutes from Cahors. It offers four different circuits of rope ladders, zip lines suspended bridges and tightropes, ranging from relatively easy to utterly diabolical. Shooting through the air among the treetops on one Cap Nature's zip lines is about as close as you'll ever get to flying, this side of heaven. The owner Gilles, a genial and boisterous exfireman, kits out all visitors with safety harnesses and makes sure that everyone understands their proper use (in English as well as French) before being allowed into the trees. “People are

or visitors and locals alike there are a myriad of exciting sports related activities bubbling merrily below the radar around Le Lot. Depending on the level of thrill you seek, there is something for all. A personal favourite of mine is paragliding. With the Ecole de Parapente du Lot (in Douelle, 10 km West of Cahors, tel: 05 65 30 78 20 www.parapente-max.fr) you can experience the breathtaking views offered by the entire region in complete safety with Olivier and his team. The ride is exhilarating and should definitely be on your “to do list”. Worth noting, they also offer bike rental for your own voyages of discovery. Water skiing is something you may not expect to find in the area but there is a very friendly and professional outfit called Pradines Sports Nautique (06 76 54 40 87). They promise a safe and fun day out for everyone whether beginner (zipping along on a large inflatable) or expert (free-style wake boarding). Don't worry. If you fall in the river, it's actually not cold and you'll have a buoyancy jacket! If horse riding is your passion you can find a warm

lmost from the beginning of time, man has dreamed of being able to fly but, with the notable exception of Icarus, it was left to the French to do it first! Two French brothers, Joseph & Etienne Montgolfier are largely credited with inventing the hot-air balloon. Stories about how they made the great discovery vary widely, but one of them is that whilst working in their father's paper mill, they observed how paper rose in the updraft of the factory's chimney. They conducted some simple experiments with silk bags and concluded that by filling a large bag with hot-air, it would rise.

responsible for their own safety,” he points out, “but I can't expect them to take it seriously if I don't take it seriously myself. We've never had an accident,” he adds. The park makes for a perfect half-day adventure for families. The two easier circuits are open to anyone aged six and over, subject to a minimum height requirement of 1m45 with arms raised, but there is a wonderful playground to keep smaller children busy while the older ones swing from the trees. Once the adults have mastered the two easier circuits, two more challenging ones await the brave of heart with even more breathtaking zip lines up to 20 meters high. The setting is idyllic, and the view from the trees alone merits the climb. There is no restaurant, but there is a small snack bar and a pleasant shaded picnic area. The park is open from 9:00am to 7:00pm every day in summer, and reservations are required. Gilles also emphasizes that Cap Nature can accommodate disabled visitors. Situated in a perfect setting between Cahors and Pradines, they welcome visitors of all levels and offer a range of very reasonable tariffs. The area is alive with cyclists and runners who seem to be out and about in their thousands. Believe me, they are not just doing this for the good of their health. They are taking in the glorious surroundings and gulping down our fresh air. Why not follow their lead? Caring for those who care for France

W

e all need good neighbours – and the network in the Lot of “Les Bons Voisins” has increased to include Deryck and Jackie Watson based at Lacave near Souillac. Since 2002, the network founded in southern Brittany has spread across France. Deryck and Jackie who had always planned to undertake property management when they made their move to France, realised that by joining this high profile professional network they would make themselves more easily available to second home owners in their chosen corner of France. They know from their own experience before they came to live full time in France, that long distance ownership can be stressful and whether a problem is administrative (EDF bills estimated incorrectly) or practical (you need someone to supervise the installation of the swimming pool!) they can take away the strain by acting on the owners behalf. Where they are not able to actually undertake work themselves – they don't pretend to be builders for example – then they can organise specialists to do this. They have many local contacts with whom they work on behalf of their clients, ensuring the high standards of professional service expected of “Les Bons Voisins”.

How PoolGobbler finally arrived in France

Everything you need for great outdoor living Traditional Swimming Pools & ü

I

t all started in the summer of 2003: We added a pool to our holiday home in Sérignac! To celebrate this, friends in Cape Town sent a present for our pool. I looked at the thing and mumbled sceptically: “What on earth are we supposed to do with that ?”. "That", explained my wife, who is South African, is a PoolGobbler. It cleans the pool surface and so it saves work, it is very popular in South Africa. We connected it to one of the returns from the pump. To my surprise, it did indeed clean our pool surface. Using the force of the out-streaming water, it pulled the leaves and insects into its filter bag, while making a calming babbling sound. Since then I've never wanted to do without it. But fate struck! Last year, a sweet 4-year old used the PoolGobbler as a spring-board. It broke and a replacement could only be bought in South Africa, which our friends did. And the idea was born: if no-one imports this great tool into Europe, I'll do it. Back in Amsterdam, after the go-ahead from the manufacturer, I created my company PoolGoods to sell PoolGobbler on internet (www.poolgoods.eu). Here, in Sérignac (46700), I established Pure-Piscines to market it in France.

We grow, harvest & distil lavender to produce our own pure essential oils of the highest quality.

LAVENDER IN THE LOT

S

ummer visitors passing by the little hamlet of Massarrat – in a hidden corner of the Lot near beautiful Lherm – will be entranced by a sea of blue lavender alive with butterflies and bees. Next they will become aware of the sweet, soothing scent and how the neat rows of plants follow the curve of the hill and are interspersed with rocky soil – perfect for drainage – and freshly cut grass. This is all the work of husband and wife team, Ian and Suzie Dick. He is originally a Kiwi and it was while visiting a small village in New Zealand called Akaroa, that they came upon a

lavender farm and thought: “We could do that!” Luck was with them and they talked to a top lavender expert who happened to be there, found the perfect spot in France and b o u g h t u p a neighbouring plot and barn, which is now the distillery. They have since discovered that Akaroa is exactly on the other side of the world from Massarrat, which explains why lavender, walnuts and sunflowers all thrive in both places.

The first 400 lavenders were planted at Lavande de Lherm during May 2003 – just as the worst heatwave ever experienced hit the Lot. Incredibly, all the plants survived and even made it through the next winter with temperatures of -12°C. They even survived the rummaging of wild boars through the spring. Ian and Suzie now grow 2,500 plants and 30 varieties, from various parts of the world. As well as distilling their own essential oils, they also offer an exclusive service: 'Bring Your Own Lavender'. This gives local people the chance to have the harvest from their own

gardens distilled, either for their own use or for a very special gift. The word 'lavender' comes from the Latin 'lavare' meaning 'to wash'. The Romans used it extensively for bathing and dried their washing over lavender bushes. The antiseptic properties of this pungent plant were used in the First World War when medicines were scarce. Many farmers grew it as their contribution to the war effort. Nowadays, lavender is ever popular as a perfume, for medicinal use, in aromatherapy, homeopathy and cooking. It is nature's own First Aid Kit, can relieve the sting of a mosquito bite in a trice and has enjoyed a revival in popularity with the old and young as we are all trying to use natural products to save our planet. A summer visit to Lavande de Lherm gives you a chance to share in Ian and Suzie's passion for lavender. You can view the harvester in action, watch the distilling process or buy lavander oils on Monday and Wednesday afternoon only. They also take parties of 12 people at a time and it is necessary to book in advance to avoid disappointment. JUNE AND JULY IN THE GARDEN

N

ow is the time to sit back and enjoy the garden after all your hard work in the Spring. A little light dead-heading to keep the roses and annuals coming – not forgetting that cutting back perennials which have flowered can encourage a second blooming too – and hopefully some heavy watering morning and evening if the weather is as sunny as we would all like. Keep any activities like dealing with the spectacular show of irises last month strictly to the cooler times of day and remember to drink lots of water yourself, as you sit in your deckchair enjoying the scents of the flowers and the hum of the bees. Cut back iris stems after flowering and trim the leaves to a few centimetres. If your soil is poor, water in some fertiliser to encourage sturdy growth for next year. July is the time to move them, so prepare a sunny spot with some fertilizer or compost beforehand. Swap some interesting colours with your neighbours and spread the joy. Happy gardening! Vickie S
