Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical
6th & 7th January 2023
THEATRE SEATON
The shortest day has come and gone, and we are all looking forward to the first signs of spring, though to be fair, with climate change, Mother Nature has been getting a bit confused with late (or early) new shoots and blooms appearing, only to be fried when the freezing temperatures return on the odd occasion.
But you’re in for an absolute sizzler of a programme this January and February, with a fantastic choice of entertainment. From live music in the form of Joey the Lips and the rescheduled Darkside of Pink Floyd, to the brilliant Paddleboat Theatre production of Hansel and Gretel, and everything in between.
Look out for our special film weekend dedicated to Avatar: The Way of Water. There will be two of our famous Film Picnic Nights and a Sunday matinee, so plenty of opportunities to see this latest blockbuster.
What are you doing for Valentine’s? Maybe you want to pop the question to your loved one, or perhaps you just want to make it a bit more special. Why not make it even more magical and spend the night getting up close and personal at the Gateway Theatre Valentine night featuring award-winning magician, Simply Simon, followed by a live performance from the New West End Jerseys, and if you are thinking of asking your loved one for their hand, let us know, and we’ll make it even more memorable.
Whatever you’re planning and whoever it’s with, we hope to see you very soon!

Matilda (Alisha Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination and the worst parents in the world. While her parents (Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough) content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, AVATAR 2 begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure. The latest in the groundbreaking fantasy saga from director James Cameron.
Excited to attend Crunchem Hall, Matilda is surprised to find the school is an ominous and oppressive place led by the towering and villainous Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson). Filled with an overwhelming sense of justice, Matilda dares to take a stand for what is right and teach Trunchbull a lesson she won’t forget.

The film stars Emma Mackey (“Sex Education”, “Death on the Nile”) as Emily, a rebel and misfit, as she finds her voice and writes the literary classic Wuthering Heights. “EMILY” explores the relationships that inspired her – her raw, passionate sisterhood with Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling – “The Musketeers”) and Anne (Amelia Gething – “The Spanish Princess”); her first aching, forbidden love for Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen –“The Lost Daughter”, “The Haunting of Bly Manor”) and her care for her maverick brother (Fionn Whitehead – “The Duke”, “Dunkirk”) whom she idolises.
Frances O’Connor makes her directorial debut with “EMILY,” from her own original screenplay. The film also stars Adrian Dunbar (“Line of Duty”) and Gemma Jones (“Bridget Jones’s Baby”, “Gentleman Jack”).

LIVING is the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful.
Set in 1952 London, the film will follow Williams, a veteran civil servant, who has become a small cog in the bureaucracy of rebuilding postWWII England. As endless paperwork piles up on his desk, he learns he has a fatal illness. Thus begins his quest to find some meaning to his seemingly grey, monotonous life before it slips away. He first attempts, with limited success, to throw himself into debauchery during a wild night in Brighton in the company of a bohemian writer he befriends there. Then, arriving back in London, he ignores family and work responsibilities for days on end. But soon he becomes intrigued by Margaret, a young co-worker in his office, who appears to exemplify exactly what life and living is – and what may so far have passed him by.

Amodern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new full-length work, reuniting Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon with the creative team who transformed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale into dance, composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley.
The ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel’s novel – a captivating family saga where the central character’s emotions spill out through cooking to influence everyone around her in startling and dramatic ways. In this coproduction with American Ballet Theatre, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra also acts as musical consultant for Talbot’s newly commissioned score, and Wheeldon has worked closely with Esquivel to reshape her richly layered story into an entertaining and engrossing new ballet.
This is a recording of a live performance filmed in June 2022.
