FROMTHEGENERALMANAGER

Summertime is here, but what an amazing stretch of weather we have enjoyed for the first half of 2023. The extended cool spring is hard to see go. Thanks to all of you for your support of The Club at Sea Palms. We are blessed to have so many active Members who support all we do. We look forward to a fantastic second half of the year.

After the very long wait for net repairs to be completed, we only had a few months to enjoy the range before the storms on June 13 caused significant damage to pole and netting on the west and north sides. Repair estimates and timelines are underway. Deconstruction and repair will take time, and we appreciate your patience as the process moves forward. In the interim, the plan is to provide a “warm-up” area for Members, guests, and paying golfers only. This area will not be available to the public or for extended practice. Installation of synthetic turf at the practice range is scheduled to be completed during the aerification closure, and portable nets will be used to create this area. More complete details will follow as repair plans are finalized. The Miracle is always a member option; we will waive the guest fee for accompanied guests to practice with you. All guests must be accompanied, as well as any dependents under the age of 17. If you do not have shag balls for The Miracle, please stop by the golf shop, and we will provide a small bag of practice balls for you!

The busy pool and vacation season is upon us. Continued repairs and maintenance on both pools are a priority. The pools are professionally cleaned five days per week, with in-house cleaning the other two. Please remember that the east pool is available to resort guests also. We expect much more resort activity with 120 rooms open for guests. The new wristband policy is in place, and anyone enjoying either pool is required to be checked in and wearing a wristband. To control the entries into the member-only west pool area, the two outside gates are now exit-only. If you need assistance to enter the areas, please call the west fitness staff at 912.268.4233 during attended hours, and they will gladly open the gate for entry. Thank you for your understanding and consideration of the new policy. It is for the protection and safety of all Members and guests.

A big shout out to Assistant PGA Professional Jason Babb and Head PGA Professional for starting the Club at Sea Palms PGA Junior League Team. The first match at Sea Palms was so much fun to watch as more than 40 junior golfers played against local teams from Brunswick CC and Jekyll Island Golf Course. Matches will continue throughout the summer.

With only two majors left to play, the Member-Member and Ladies Member-Guest, the tournament schedule is halfway home. Please congratulate our 2023 Club Championship and Member-Guest winners. Our biggest events of the season were well attended, highly competitive, and fun for all.

We truly have a great golf course to be proud of! During the Southeast Junior Golf Tour event early in June, I had countless parents and players say that Sea Palms was the best golf course they played all year long! This is a huge compliment because if you look at their schedule, they have played many great courses. This is a testament to the agronomy team and the care that the membership has provided while playing the golf course. I see members religiously filling divots and raking bunkers. If everyone continues to take pride in their golf course, we will continue to have something to be proud of for years to come. Summer brings about the aerification of the golf course. This is a necessary evil in the golf industry to keep turf conditions healthy and allow for new growth. We are also very excited about the new mats over at the range. I have been at clubs in the past that have this asset on their range. It will help us conserve our natural grass turf area and provide better conditions to practice year-round. This will be possible if people abide by the mat only days and stay off the grass. We have a limited amount of grass, which gets much use.

At the end of June, Jason and I will complete the Spring/ Summer PGA Junior League Season. This is the first PGA Junior League team here at Sea Palms, and we plan to grow the team in the Fall and continue to develop the Junior Golf Program here at Sea Palms. If you are interested in getting your junior into golf, I suggest getting them signed up for Junior League this Fall. We practice over at The Miracle. We emphasize getting the ball into the hole. Junior golfers can generally get the ball close to the green in regulation and need help getting it into the hole. We help them understand the proper technique and routines to get the ball up, down, and into the hole! We will also be having 2 Junior Camps this summer. June 26-28 from 1011:30 & July 17- July 19th from 10-11:30. The cost is $250 per session per student. You can call the Golf Shop or contact me or Jason to sign-up.

I thought about a golf tip I wanted to share due to the normally windy conditions we face here on the island. Tom Watson was one of the greatest players in the wind. He won 5 British Opens in 9 years. The key to his success in the Opens was conquering the windy conditions. He did this by embracing the wind. Here are some of Tom Watson’s keys to beating the wind. Into the wind… fight the urge to swing harder! Take more club. Don’t be afraid to club up 1, 2, or even three clubs more and swing at 75%. Fast swings cause more backspin, which makes the ball go higher and gets beat up by the wind. Move the ball a shade back in your stance. Move your weight more towards your front foot. Choke down a little on the club. If you want to hit the ball lower, finish your follow-through lower than usual. Downwind…swing full speed! You want to add that full speed to create the backspin to get the ball highe position and set up and always make a full swing. It will be harder to stop y sure to allow for some release when the ball hits the green. Lastly, in a cro in both directions, you want to work the ball into the wind Like trying to hit a bank shot off the direction, the wind is blowing. Try controlled and balanced swing. If you need any help with keys, please contact a member of our golf professional s and we can assist in helping you play better in the wind. He

AGRONOMY

The dog days of summer have officially begun, and the Sea Palms Golf Course maintenance team is out in full force, preparing for a busy fall schedule. The team plans to narrow its efforts on continuing to improve playability as well as the overall aesthetics of the course.

As the course continues to rebound from the transition to bermudagrass from overseeded turf, the maintenance team will continue to fertilize and use cultural practices to expedite the recovery and increase the quality of the course. During this time, aerification and verticutting paired with light and frequent topdressing will be implemented to reduce grain while also promoting the smoothness of the greens. While these efforts can, at times, be disruptive, they are also imperative in our efforts to maintain and continually improve the course.

The main priority heading into the fall and winter seasons is to increase the density of turf on all levels. Once the desired density has been obtained, the focus will be shifted to improving green speeds for the upcoming fall season.

As always, help protect playing conditions by:

Repair ball marks. Fill divots.

Rake bunkers.

Scatter cart traffic.

Keep carts on paths at tees and greens. obey daily cart traffic.

WINE&DESIGN

EarringswithTeresaLatham

Our members had the opportunity to express their creativity through new mediums with help from three talented instructors. In April, members learned how to create their pair of earrings with t24 Design's Teresa Latham. These ladies not only chose the material and shape of their earrings but applied designs to the metals and even made the ear wires themselves to create earrings that were unique to them.

AbstractAlcoho InkPaintingwit ToniBagala

In May, our members experimented with a new artistic medium using alcohol ink. Toni Bagala gave great instructions on how best to achieve the desired effect using different tools and colors to express everyone's creativity.

On Monday, July 17, we welcome Pamela Bauer Mueller to Sea Palms as she will discuss her book, The Sky Is My Home. Pamela's book tells the story of Hazel Jane Raines, the first woman in Georgia to earn a pilot's license. Follow Hazel on her aviation journey as she becomes one of the air force's first female pilots and serves as a lieutenant during World War II and the Korean War.

Want to learn more about the rich history of St. Simons and the surrounding area? Join us on Tuesday, August 22, as Larry Hobbs will discuss his book, More Coast Tales: True Historic Stories from Georgia's Golden Isles. Readers will learn about the real-life folks who inspired a best-selling historical romance trilogy, the World War II shipyard on the Brunswick River, and much more.

We are excited to host a book signing for Sea Palms member Deborah Smith on Monday, September 11. Deborah will discuss her book, Dreams with a Message, which takes you on an exciting yet practical journey in learning how to understand your dreams better!
