INTRODUCTION

Work immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation of the Senior High School students of Brokenshire College Toril mandated by the Department of Education following the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. They must undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly relates to the student’s post-secondary goal. The focus of Work Immersion is to expose students and become familiar with the work-related environment related to their field of specialization to enhance competence. Since this is the first time the students have been exposed to the work environment, they are expected to take note of the: (i) gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and workers; (ii) appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in school; (iii) enhance their technical knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and (v) develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. This module contains the rationale, scope, definition of terms, objectives, principles and policy statement, course description, work immersion delivery models, duties and responsibilities of personnel, and course content. It has assessment, monitoring, and evaluation to monitor students’ progress.

One of the goals of the K+12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethics, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject has been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities:

1. To become familiar with the work place;

2. For employment simulation; and

3. To apply their competencies to areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON PRE-IMMERSION ORIENTATION

As a senior high school student assigned to an internship in work immersion, it's essential to commit to professionalism and reliability within the company. I aim to possess abilities that align with the company's policies, emphasizing effective communication, teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, and professionalism in the workplace. By demonstrating initiative, knowledge, and the capability to apply what I've learned in the work immersion orientation, I aim to be more responsible in adhering to the company's rules. I expect to become more independent, exert effort, and enhance my communication skills. It's imperative for me to be understanding and compassionate, as work immersion is a valuable opportunity for senior high school students to advance and practice professionalism and knowledge applicable in future jobs. My understanding and anticipation of the upcoming work immersion and internship at any site are that it will be both challenging and enjoyable, offering opportunities to explore new experiences and skills. Work immersion is invaluable as it enables students to develop and adopt crucial workplace skills, including punctuality, professionalism, and adherence to company policies. During work immersion, students are expected to arrive on time and conduct themselves professionally while familiarizing themselves with and adhering to workplace policies and procedures.

Work immersion students are expected to maintain high standards of punctuality, professionalism, and company policies. Punctuality demonstrates respect for the company's time and reliability. Professionalism involves dressing appropriately, communicating effectively, and showing respect. Adherence to company policies is crucial for maintaining a positive work environment. Students should approach their experience with a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and commitment to upholding company values. These experiences help students develop important skills such as collaboration, time management, adaptability, and professionalism. Overall, work immersion provides students with knowledge and opportunities to develop skills that will be valuable in their future careers. It also helps them enhance their positive energy and make a lasting impression, thereby enriching their overall experience and skill set for the future.

From what I've learned during my first week of work, Immersion Firstly is to be "professional and take initiative to enhance your skills and knowledge through training and professional development opportunities and seeking feedback from your supervisor. Secondly is "Integrity ''conduct yourself with honesty and integrity and decision, uphold ethical standards and maintain confidentiality when necessary. Thirdly is "Communication" to communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors, both verbally and in writing. Fourthly is "Teamwork" to collaborate with companions and contribute to a positive and productive work

2

environment.be willing to support and assist necessary. Fifth is "Problem Solving" approach challenges with a proactive and solution oriented mindset. Lastly and the most important is "listen and learn" . Pay attention to instructions and feedback from your supervisor and colleagues, use this feedback to improve your skills and performance.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE PARTNER INSTITUTION

Brokenshire College of Toril is the fruit of the labors, commitment and dedication of people whose noble intention is to carry on the ministry of the United Church of Christ through quality education. The year 2003 marked the foundation year of the institution when on May 12, 2003, the Boards of trustees of Brokenshire College and Toril UCCP Learning Center Inc. (TULCI) agreed to continue the educational venture in the Toril community through Brokenshire College Toril. The agreement was made to ensure that the educational venture would remain within and a part of the educational ministry of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). The board of trustees of Brokenshire College tasked Rev. Ermelinda B. Villegas to manage the Toril Campus while the registration of a new school under the Brokenshire College system was being processed. Rev. Villegas sought reforms and furthered the development of the Lubogan campus. She was later appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Brokenshire CollegeToril Davao City, Inc. Her service officially started in the SY 2003-2004. On July 31, 2003, Brokenshire College Toril was officially registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit organization. In the school year 2004-2005, the Toril campus was officially renamed as “Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc”. Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc. became an extension Campus of the BS Nursing program, Information Technology and Bachelor in Elementary Education of Brokenshire College (Main Campus) from June 2004 until 2012. Furthermore, Brokenshire College Toril in partnership with Broadlink @ IRC performed the leg working and marketing for the Computer Literacy Program of the school. This course covers only fifteen Sunday sessions on Basic Computer Operations and Applications. The first batch of the program had produced 99 students who received their certificates of completion during the culmination on November 30, 2008. Although a young member of the education industry, BCT had undergone a process of upgrading its quality in terms of education and services to its stakeholders in 2013. The school was visited and inspected by the members of the Association of Christian School Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency Inc. in February 2013. The purpose of the initial accreditation was to assess school’s standards of processes and operations. BCT then received commendation for being one of the youngest educational institutions to pursue accreditation. On March 21, 2013, the groundbreaking of the chapel happened with the faculty and staff, students and board of trustees as witnesses. The need to build the

4

chapel was successfully responded to since Brokenshire College Toril is a Christianimbued institution. By the SY 2014-2015, BCT was under the management of a new directress Rev. Hidita C. Villas. In February 2015, BCT was revisited and inspected by the members of the Association of Christian School Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency Inc. And finally, on April 24, 2015, ACSCU-AAI awarded Brokenshire College Toril with LEVEL 1 Accreditation. In the same year, the school continued its progress. It continued to offer programs in Pre-School, Elementary, High School, Computer Literacy Program and Caregiving course under the leadership of the School Principal – Mr. Enrico Abo. In sync with the national implementation of the Senior High School program, the school established its SHS department in SY 2016-2017 offering academic (ABM, HUMSS, STEM) and technical vocational livelihood tracks. The school has since been one of the educational institutions in Toril with most number of SHS students. The SY 2017-2018 marked another significant layer in the school’s culture of excellence as ACSCUACI, after re-visitation to and re-assessment of the school’s operations, upgraded its accreditation status to level 2 – a rare feat for an institution below 20 years old. It was also in the same school year when the Research office was re-established. Today, Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc. continues to serve and grow in becoming a premier institution by offering quality 21st century education coupled with Christian values faith, service, servant leadership and responsible stewardship in Pre-School, Elementary, Junior High School and Senior High School under the leadership of the School Head – Mrs. Cherrie N. Paniamogan.

WEEKLY JOURNAL

Week 1

During my work immersion, each day presented new opportunities to learn and contribute effectively to the workplace. On the first day, I arrived early and patiently awaited my supervisor's arrival. In the meantime, a colleague who had previously assisted my supervisor provided me with valuable orientation, giving me a head start on understanding my role. When my supervisor arrived, my adviser introduced me, and I was immediately entrusted with tasks, including observing and learning from my colleague's actions. My supervisor provided me with valuable orientation, giving me a head start on understanding my role. When my supervisor arrived, my adviser introduced me, and I was immediately entrusted with tasks, including observing and learning from my colleague's actions.

Throughout the week, I embraced a range of responsibilities with enthusiasm and a desire to excel. Notable tasks included checking the cleanliness of every room and documenting any issues, demonstrating my attention to detail and commitment to high standards. Additionally, when assisting in the property custodian's office, I took the initiative to help laminate documents, showcasing my willingness to go above and beyond to support my colleagues.

On the second day, I took it upon myself to clean the office and dispose of trash before my supervisor's arrival, ensuring a clean and organized workspace. I also followed up on a task from the previous day, showing my dedication to completing assignments promptly and efficiently.

Throughout the week, I supported my supervisor during meetings and assisted in organizing classroom materials. When students inquired about my supervisor's whereabouts, I handled the situation with professionalism and empathy, ensuring they were informed despite my supervisor's absence.

On the fourth day, I requested permission to attend a gym orientation, showcasing my ability to balance personal interests with work responsibilities while maintaining a proactive approach to self-improvement.

On my first week in work immersion, I encountered several challenges that tested my knowledge and skills. I remained committed to my responsibilities and I made an effort to observe and learning some new skills. On my first week in immersion, I've experienced that not only enhanced my skills but also improve my teamwork and problem solving. I am grateful for the opportunity and confident that the lesson learned will serve me well in my future career.

Week 2

On the second week of the first day, I cleaned my supervisor's office and prepared her table. After preparing, I washed her mug, spoon, fork, chopstick, and tumbler. I received the message from my supervisor, and she said, "May parcel na pupunta, and take to the guardhouse and lagay mo sa office." After that, I immediately went to the guard house and took those parcels that ma'am bought. Ma'am messaged me to assemble them and asked for help with maintenance. but for me in my mind, "I got this; I need initiative," but I guess it's not, so I ask my coworker to help me assemble the table that ma'am bought; it takes hours to assemble. After that, ma'am asked me to ask the maintenance worker to mop the floor in the conference room while I was waiting for the maintenance. Ma'am asked me to put everything outside. After that, maintenance came in and mopped the floor, and I also assisted her. After that, I cleaned the entire storage cabinet and arranged it. On the second week of the second day, I usually go early and clean the office and arrange her table as usual. After that, I wash my supervisor's mug, spoon, fork, and chopstick and refill her tumbler. After that, I saw the water dispenser had no more water, so I refilled it. Ma'am Mariel asked me to photocopy the test paper for catch-up Friday. After that, my supervisor asked me to take the parcel in the guardhouse and put it in her office, and she said I needed to assemble it that she bought it, and I assembled the paper holder, and after I assembled it's lunch time, so ma'am told me, "You can eat your lunch." After I had eaten, I was in the office, and ma'am asked for me to buy a banana cue. After that, I came back to her office, and it's closed, so I asked my coworker at the front desk what's going on there. He said my supervisor was having a meeting inside, so I waited until they were done, and it's already 4; it's time to go out, and they're still not done yet, so I messaged my supervisor, "Good afternoon, ma'am, pwede na po mag out? Tomorrow nalang ako mag pa sign ng dtr”.

On my third day, I go early because I have to clean my supervisor's office, arrange her table, wash her mug, spoon, fork, chopstick, and refill her tumbler. Ma'am asked me to go to the guardhouse and take her parcel, so I went there and took her parcel and put it in her office. After that, Ma'am told me to assemble the sofa she bought, so I asked my coworker to help me, and then we assembled the sofa, and it took almost 4 hours. After that, I go to the custodian because I

8

need to follow up on the photocopies, and after getting there, it's already done, and I have to get all the copies and put them in the conference room. I have to arrange them by page so I can easily take them one by one and staple them. But ma'am Mariel told me to call somebody to help stapling the test for catch-up Friday, so I called them my other coworker to, so it could be easily done because I'm not alone. On the fourth day, I go early and clean the entire supervisor's office because it's my last day. I arrange her table, wash her mug, spoon, fork, and chopstick, and refill her tumbler. After that, I wrote a journal, and suddenly Ma'am came in to the office, and I asked her if I could go to the cashier to pay tuition, and she said yes. After that, ma'am asked me to get 40 tests for catch-up Friday, and ma'am asked me to assist her in their quiz for all with high honor. While I'm assisting her, I also observe the whole time. After lunch, ma'am asked me if it was okay for me to take charge of doing their quiz. I responded to her and said I couldn't; I'm shy, but I know it's not right to refuse, and I feel bad for myself for refusing her favor because it's my chance to take on some responsibilities and overcome my shyness, but I said I couldn't do it. So ma'am ask me to someone who can help me, so I suggest my classmate Abay, and sir Al was asked for permission by her supervisor, and ma'am Anaya said she's free, so I immediately ask Abay to help me, but I'm the one who assisted her. After that, it's almost 4 p.m., but they're already done, so we go to the faculty, but Ma'am Tina wasn't there, and Ma'am Anaya told us they go somewhere.

I'm in my second week of work immersion. I kept focused on my responsibilities and made an effort to observe and acquire new skills. During my second week of immersion, I also developed an understanding for different points of view, which helped me study more effectively generally. I am glad for the experience and certain that the lessons gained will help me in my future career.
