INTRODUCTION

Work immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation of the Senior High School students of Brokenshire College Toril mandated by the Department of Education following the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. They must undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly relates to the student’s post-secondary goal. The focus of Work Immersion is to expose students and become familiar with the work-related environment related to their field of specialization to enhance competence. Since this is the first time the students have been exposed to the work environment, they are expected to take note of the: (i) gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and workers; (ii) appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in school; (iii) enhance their technical knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and (v) develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. This module contains the rationale, scope, definition of terms, objectives, principles and policy statement, course description, work immersion delivery models, duties and responsibilities of personnel, and course content. It has assessment, monitoring, and evaluation to monitor students’ progress.

One of the goals of the K+12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethics, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject has been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities:

1. To become familiar with the work place;

2. For employment simulation; and

3. To apply their competencies to areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON PRE-IMMERSION ORIENTATION

As a work immersion student, I learned a lot through the work immersion orientation. Through work orientation, we learned important things about how to behave as good employees. First of all, I found that being professional is very important. This means being punctual, doing what you promise, and treating others well. We also learned that it is important to speak well with others. It is important not only to talk, but also to listen carefully and explain clearly. The ability to adapt to new situations and be flexible is also important. We have finally learned to do the right thing even when no one is looking. It’s about being honest, being fair, and maintaining confidentiality when necessary. Overall, this orientation was a good introduction to understanding how we can be successful at work and grow professionally during our professional immersion period. When immersed in work, students take on great responsibility.

You must be punctual, act professionally, and follow company rules. Punctuality shows that you are reliable and respect other people’s time. Being professional means dressing appropriately, communicating well, and taking responsibility for your work. This helps create a positive environment and build a good reputation. Adhering to company policies is also important. Students must understand and follow rules of conduct, security, and confidentiality. This shows integrity and respect for the organization. Students must meet these expectations in order to become well-acquainted with and prepared for the professional world. In today’s work world, success at a job is not just about technical skills. Soft skills such as communication and teamwork are equally important to success. For effective communication, it is important to speak and listen well. When people communicate clearly and understand each other, trust is built and teams work better together. Collaboration within a team is very important for teamwork. When people collaborate and share ideas, they solve problems faster and accomplish more. When it comes to problem solving, it’s important to be able to solve problems quickly and creatively. Helps businesses adapt to change and find new paths to success. Conditions are constantly changing in the workplace to increase adaptability. Being adaptable means meeting any challenge, learning new things, and always staying one step ahead. For professionalism, acting professionally means being trustworthy, respectful, and honest. Builds trust among customers and colleagues and helps businesses maintain a good reputation. When it comes to work ethics, a strong work ethic means being dedicated, responsible, and doing your best work every day. It contributes to the smooth running of enterprises and promotes a positive working environment. In summary, soft skills such as effective communication, teamwork, problem solving,

2

adaptability, professionalism, and work ethic are essential to success in today’s workplace. By focusing on developing these capabilities, companies can build a culture of collaboration, innovation, and resilience, and prepare for long-term success in a competitive world.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE PARTNER INSTITUTION

HISTORY OF

BROKENSHIRE COLLEGE TORIL, DAVAO CITY, INC.

Brokenshire College of Toril is the fruit of the labors, commitment and dedication of people whose noble intention is to carry on the ministry of the United Church of Christ through quality education.

The year 2003 marked the foundation year of the institution when on May 12, 2003, the Boards of trustees of Brokenshire College and Toril UCCP Learning Center Inc. (TULCI) agreed to continue the educational venture in the Toril community through Brokenshire College Toril. The agreement was made to ensure that the educational venture would remain within and a part of the educational ministry of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP).

The board of trustees of Brokenshire College tasked Rev. Ermelinda B. Villegas to manage the Toril Campus while the registration of a new school under the Brokenshire College system was being processed. Rev. Villegas sought reforms and furthered the development of the Lubogan campus. She was later appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Brokenshire CollegeToril Davao City, Inc. Her service officially started in the SY 2003-2004.

On July 31, 2003, Brokenshire College Toril was officially registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit organization.

4

In the school year 2004-2005, the Toril campus was officially renamed as “Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc”.

Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc. Became an extension Campus of the BS Nursing program, Information Technology and Bachelor in Elementary Education of Brokenshire College (Main Campus) from June 2004 until 2012.

Furthermore, Brokenshire College Toril in partnership with Broadlink @ IRC performed the leg working and marketing for the Computer Literacy Program of the school. This course covers only fifteen Sunday sessions on Basic Computer Operations and Applications. The first batch of the program had produced 99 students who received their certificates of completion during the culmination on November 30, 2008.

Although a young member of the education industry, BCT had undergone a process of upgrading its quality in terms of education and services to its stakeholders in 2013. The school was visited and inspected by the members of the Association of Christian School Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency Inc. In February 2013. The purpose of the initial accreditation was to assess school’s standards of processes and operations. BCT then received commendation for being one of the youngest educational institutions to pursue accreditation.

On March 21, 2013, the groundbreaking of the chapel happened with the faculty and staff, students and board of trustees as witnesses. The need to build the chapel was successfully responded to since Brokenshire College Toril is a Christianimbued institution.

By the SY 2014-2015, BCT was under the management of a new directress Rev. Hidita C. Villas.

5

In February 2015, BCT was revisited and inspected by the members of the Association of Christian School Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency Inc. And finally, on April 24, 2015, ACSCU-AAI awarded Brokenshire College Toril with LEVEL 1 Accreditation.

In the same year, the school continued its progress. It continued to offer programs in Pre-School, Elementary, High School, Computer Literacy Program and Caregiving course under the leadership of the School Principal – Mr. Enrico Abo.

In sync with the national implementation of the Senior High School program, the school established its SHS department in SY 2016-2017 offering academic (ABM, HUMSS, STEM) and technical vocational livelihood tracks. The school has since been one of the educational institutions in Toril with most number of SHS students.

The SY 2017-2018 marked another significant layer in the school’s culture of excellence as ACSCU-ACI, after re-visitation to and re-assessment of the school’s operations, upgraded its accreditation status to level 2 – a rare feat for an institution below 20 years old. It was also in the same school year when the Research office was re-established.

Today, Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc. Continues to serve and grow in becoming a premier institution by offering quality 21st century education coupled with Christian values faith, service, servant leadership and responsible stewardship in Pre-School, Elementary, Junior High School and Senior High School under the leadership of the School Head – Mrs. Cherrie N. Paniamogan.

WEEKLY JOURNAL

Week 1

On the first day of our job, I felt nervous, perhaps because it was my first time experiencing this kind of situation, and naturally, I wasn’t yet accustomed to it. I went to my supervisor’s office, and upon entering, I greeted her with a “good afternoon.” The first task she assigned me was to make photocopies, followed by cutting what I photocopied. After completing the cutting task, she instructed me to go to the property custodian to obtain two plastic covers because she needed something to be covered. Once I finished covering the item, she had me do some work on the laptop, which concluded my activities for the day. On my second day at work, I nearly ran late as I overslept. The first task my supervisor assigned me today was to finish the task she had given me on the laptop because I hadn’t completed it yesterday because she ran out of time. After completing the task on the laptop, I took the opportunity to observe the people around me, noting their activities and how they interacted with others. I realized the significance of greeting people as it plays a crucial role in establishing rapport. Shortly after, my supervisor called me and instructed me to organize the materials she had checked earlier. Once I finished arranging the test papers, she asked me to join her class and observe and help her carry things. In the afternoon, my colleague and I were tasked with cleaning the classroom. My cleaning partner and I don’t talk much because that’s the first we meet and it’s also her last day at work. But in order not to be awkward, I talk to her sometimes for the better teamwork, which concluded our activities for the day. On my third day at work, supervisor instructed me to assist my colleagues in cutting flyers, and in the process, I learned something new from them. One of my colleagues taught me a technique to make cutting easier and to help me finish the task more quickly. From administrative tasks to helping colleagues, the day was filled with various activities that enriched my understanding and skills. Throughout the day, I engage in a range of activities, each offering a unique learning experience. From simple office tasks like photocopying and cleaning to learning new techniques for flyer cutting, every one this activity presented an opportunity for growth. One of my notable learning event was during the flyer cutting process, when one of my colleagues provided a strategy for increasing efficiency. This not only speed up the task, but I learned something new, also showed me the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in the workplace. Also observing my supervisor do her classes provided valuable insights into good teaching strategies and classroom management. It was an excellent opportunity to observe the practical application of educational concepts discussed in academic contexts. Despite the abundance of tasks, I didn’t forget to always say good morning to everyone who works at the school and I also completed my daily log and actively participated in the SSS orientation at the gym. These accomplishments

9

demonstrate my ability to manage work responsibilities and personal development goals. Furthermore, regularly participating in office and classroom cleaning activities emphasised my dedication to creating a positive work environment by developing a sense of responsibility and ownership.

In summary, this experience reinforced the importance of flexibility and collaboration. As I reflect on the successes and challenges of the day, I am reminded of the importance of gaining new experiences and taking advantage of opportunities for personal and professional growth. In addition, the transition from administrative to teaching roles presented the challenge of seamlessly adapting to new roles and responsibilities. Transitioning between these different responsibilities requires flexibility and quick response to changing work environments. I also actively seek feedback from my colleagues and supervisor to improve my performance and improve my work. By learning from their experiences and applying best practices, I have overcome challenges and improved productivity.

10

Week 2

In the second week of my work day five, I have become accustomed and no longer feel nervous when speaking. The first thing my supervisor made me do today was put water in the water container near the guard house because the water container was about to run out of water then cleaning the classroom and what I did was sweep, including arranging the chairs here properly and cleaning the fan properly. After cleaning the classroom, I immediately went to my supervisor’s office, and my supervisor noticed that I seemed tired, so my supervisor told me to rest first. In the afternoon my supervisor instructed me to cut the papers and arrange the papers my supervisor checked. In this day, I felt the most tired, but it’s okay because I learned a lot. I learned how to prioritize task more effectively, the importance of maintaining a clean and organized environment for conductive learning or working conditions, and the importance of maintaining focus, such as when performing repetitive tasks like sweeping or cutting papers, because they require concentration to maintain quality and avoid errors or accidents.

Day six, my supervisor instructed me to go to the kindergarten 2 classroom to give food to her child and to also hand a book to the teacher there. After that, she told me to accompany her in her class and I also helped her carry her class materials. When I have a free time I’m working on my journal. In the afternoon, my supervisor asked me to cut the papers into small pieces. Day seven The first task assigned to me by my supervisor was to cut the bond papers into small rectangles because my supervisor said she would write something on them, after that my supervisor instructed me to join her class and carry her things. In the afternoon my supervisor instructed me to put water in the water container near the guard house, and next was to cut the bond papers again then after that we have a convocation. The next day, I did office tasks again such as cleaning, checking and do something on the laptop. On my last day, in the morning, my supervisor instructed me to check her students’ books. After that, my supervisor didn’t have any specific tasks for me, so I thought of what to do to log my activities for the day. I decided to do some cleaning, but first, I consulted my colleagues there if I could do what I planned, and they agreed. I swept the area and arranged chairs, cleaned the fan. When I finished, my supervisor instructed me to

11

her class to rate the students doing role play. I enjoyed this because their performances were entertaining, and they were good at acting. After that, my supervisor instructed me to accompany her to the district hall and St. John to visit her work immersion students. In the afternoon, I checked my supervisor’s students’ papers. Assisting my supervisor with class materials, consulting colleagues before taking action and collaborating with my supervisor on various task, switching different tasks, thinking of ways to log my activities for the day and deciding to do cleaning tasks that enabling me to find solutions independently. From this experiences I gained several improvements such as organizational skills, communication, adaptability and problem solving. These experiences have provided me with a range of valuable skills and improvements that are essential for my personal growth in various work environments.
