Welcome...

to the November issue of Seaford Scene. By now, the days are shorter and the nights are longer, it’s time to prepare ourselves for winter – which means there is still lots to see and do in Seaford over the next month! With Christmas just around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities to buy some unique Christmas presents as Seaford Christmas Fair is on from 24th to 27th at Seaford Little Theatre (page 107), Alfriston Art & Craft Market is on the 6th and the Autumn Fair at St Thomas More’s Church is on 20th November – shop local! Sussex Arts Collective are back in their new space, Uno Gallery (see page 18) and there’s more arts and crafts at the Crypt (page 85), including The Sketch Show and the SCIP youth open meeting (see page 6). Why not keep up your sports and exercise this month by taking part in the Young Mayor of Seaford’s Free Charity Sports Day on the 6th (page 75)? And moving outdoors, how about volunteering with Trees for Seaford (page 58) or On the Verge (page 58)? Annecy Catholic primary school has been busy on pages 12 and 43, whilst Plastic Free Seaford have come up trumps with a reusable party idea (see page 86)! Remember, remember it’s Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th, so please keep yourself and your pets safe, and don’t forget it’s Remembrance Day on the 11th and Remembrance Sunday on the 14th. Stay warm and enjoy! Fran Tegg. Editor

Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford

Cinema

Seaford Community Cinema and Seaford Musical Theatre are joining forces to provide Halloween trick or treats for the whole family on Sunday 30th October at the Barn Theatre. Dress up in your spookiest costume to watch Coco (PG) at 3pm. Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. The film is voiced by stars including Anthony Gonzales. Devotees of French serial Call My Agent will recognise the hilarious Laure Culamy in My Donkey, My Lover & I (15) at the Barn on Friday 5th November at 7.30pm as she chases her lover and his family with the hindrance of her donkey on holiday in the Cévennes. To quote Cath Clarke in the Guardian, ‘As Antoinette bonds with her donkey, the movie evolves from gentle farce to journey of emotional growth.’ In the meantime Culamy, in tiny denim hot pants and platform soles, spends her first days heaving at her unwilling donkey as they falteringly progress through beautiful scenery. It’s pleasingly very French. The cinema’s autumn season concludes festively on Saturday 4th December at 6pm, Christmas Magic

Following an awful period during Lockdown the Communial Tea Room in the Old Town Hall has began to flourish. Many of our regular customers have returned and we have some new visitors who have now become regulars, visiting two or three times a week. A ladies’ group is hopefully going to become a regular fortnightly guest as our laid back ambiance allows them to have a coffee or tea and a talk amongst themselves without being under pressure to drink up and leave. It is one of our goals to encourage people to drop in, have a chat with people they know or complete strangers, and leave feeling pleased that they came in. We are going to start doing take-away tea and coffee only for those going to the the beach or sitting on the seats on South Street. Our opening times are unchanged as 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.

The Sketch Show and SCIP Youth Open Meeting Curated and produced by Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP) Saturday 20th November | Sunday 21st November The Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford Open 10am – 5pm This winter join SCIP to explore the beauty of sketchbook artworks, the start of a new project, the experiments and the ideas which evolve into a finished artwork with a collection of sketches donated by some of the UK’s best known illustrators including: Jon McNaught, Adam Stower, Rob Biddulph, Natsko Seki, Graham Carter, Peter Quinnell, Shelly Laslo, Chris Haughton, John Bond, Lyndon Hayes, Margo McDaid, Ayang Cempaka, Joe Munro and many more. The exhibition is designed to highlight the freedom of sketching and show how ideas can grow from experimenting and practising. Come and experience this unique opportunity to glimpse into the artists’ creative process. All the sketches will be included in an online auction, which anyone can bid on. The funds will be used to help deliver their forthcoming creative programme for Seaford, including a large public arts project for 2022 and the new SCIP Youth programme. Alongside the exhibition SCIP will be providing free children’s art workshops on the Saturday and Sunday to learn the art of sketch booking. ‘The idea is to encourage children to experience creative freedom, where the rule book is thrown out and they are given an opportunity to experiment with shape and pattern, shading, textures, and learn to gather all their ideas in one place without any need for a final artwork – it can be a liberating experience for children and is an important part of enjoying your own creativity’ says Alice Carter, SCIP Co-Founder. The workshops are free to attend but spaces are limited so please book online at www.wearescip.co.uk – suitable for age 5+. The sketchbooks for the workshops have

6

all been generously donated by Seawhite of Brighton. On Saturday 20th November, older children and teenagers (aged 11– 8) and their parents/ guardians are invited to join the SCIP team to learn about the new SCIP Youth programme. SCIP are looking for young people aged 11–18 to be part of the youth group to help the organisation create exhibitions and workshops which will engage and challenge their generation. ‘We have spent much of 2021 researching the contemporary arts provisions in Seaford, and we were concerned by the lack of creative opportunities for young people and also funding cuts for the arts in the curriculum. We worked with our trustees to design SCIP Youth programme giving young people in Seaford the opportunity to have a say and a hand in the local art scene’ says Josie Swan, SCIP Co-Founder. The SCIP Youth programme will be open to any children living in Sussex aged 11–18 and the group will meet every two to three months to discuss SCIP Workshops and exhibition programmes, feedback on creative ideas and learn some new creative skills too! SCIP Youth is not an arts club, it’s an ideas hub, and a chance for older children to have a voice about the culture on offer within their community. An interest in the arts is essential but participants don’t need to be skilled. The SCIP Youth launch presentation is on Saturday 20th November from 3pm at The Crypt Gallery. No need to book just come along, and if you are unable to attend and would like more information about joining SCIP Youth please email hello@wearescip.co.uk Bidding on the sketches starts on 17th November and links to the auction lots will be available via www. wearescip.co.uk and the Sketch Show exhibition. Seaford Rotary

The Seaford Rotary Sleigh is returning

Seaford Rotary is glad to be able to announce that Santa has accepted our invitation to come to Seaford this December to meet children in the streets of Seaford on weekday evenings, and in Broad Street on Saturday mornings and Christmas Eve. The dates and details of routes that Santa plans to take will be published in the December Seaford Scene (distributed from 26th November), the Seaford Rotary website (www.seafordrotary.org.uk), and social media. This is provided that the Government does not impose restrictions similar to those imposed last year which prevented Santa visiting Seaford. Seaford Rotary will be using a tracker App which will enable the public to determine the location of the sleigh and hence parents can follow Santa’s journey along his route each evening so that their children can be ready for Santa’s visit by their home. Details of the App will be published later in November. Keep watching Seaford Rotary website and social media for further news of Santa’s visit to Seaford.

World Polio Day

World Polio Day was celebrated on 24th October and is an occasion when the World Health Organisation, together with national health organisations and Rotary International throughout the world celebrate winning the battle against polio. For over 40 years, Rotary has been actively helping in the vaccination programme to eradicate polio throughout the world. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries where Wild Poliovirus remains endemic, but the vaccination programme is a success with only one case of acute Flaxcid Paralysis in each country at the end of January 2021, and only 60 isolated cases from environmental sites, with many weeks when no virus could be detected at all.

8

The World Health Organisation is confident that the polio virus will have been eradicated by 2023, although three years will have to elapse for that to be confirmed. For many years, Seaford Rotary Club has been supporting this fight to eradicate polio. If you would also like to support the final effort to rid the world of this terrible disease, please send your support and donations to: The Treasurer Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust, Rotary Club of Seaford, c/o Seaford Golf Club, 111, Firle Road, Seaford. BN25 2JD. All donations made payable to: Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust – Charity No 1033841. Alternatively, you may donate online to: Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust; Sort Code 40-40-25, Account number 31398865.

Become a Friend of Seaford Rotary

ANNECY STUDENTS JOIN COMMEMORATION FOR BRITISH WEST INDIES REGIMENT Children from Annecy Catholic Primary School recently took part in a special commemoration for soldiers from the British West Indies Regiment whose bodies lie in the Commonwealth War Graves section of nearby Seaford cemetery. The school’s Year 5 and 6 classes joined the Eleven Brigade Engagement Team and soldiers of AfroCaribbean heritage at the Commonwealth War Grave Memorial, which recognises the fallen soldiers from both world wars, in particular servicemen of colour from around the Commonwealth. Organisers of the event, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Black Poppy Rose group, which represents the African, Black, Caribbean and Pacific Islands’ contributions to the war efforts, delivered a graveside lesson to the children, teaching them about some of the back stories and history behind the people whose names are inscribed on the headstones. ‘Annecy has developed a curriculum that incorporates inspirational women and inspirational BAME individuals from the past and present to ensure that our pupils see people that look like them being a success,’ explains headteacher, Paul Gallagher. ‘Conversely, we want children to see people that do not look like them being a success to engender a fully inclusive learning experience.’ Annecy Catholic Primary School is one of the most diverse schools in East Sussex. 24.7% of Annecy students are classified as non-white British, compared

with 14.2% across all primary schools in East Sussex and 10% across all Seaford primary schools. The school is part of the BOSCO Catholic Education Trust, a group of schools in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton who have come together to work collaboratively for the benefit of all children in the Catholic schools of Sussex. ‘The children learned about the fallen heroes from the first and second world wars and how people from many countries around the Commonwealth gave their lives for freedom,’ says Year 6 class teacher Laura Greppi. ‘They were delighted to be involved in the ceremony, especially having the honour to escort active servicemen, as they laid wreaths.’ The event closed with a short service and the Act of Remembrance conducted around the cemetery’s cenotaph, with poppy wreaths laid by serving soldiers of Afro-Caribbean heritage, Annecy pupils and representatives of organisations that support the many ethnic groups that serve in today’s British Armed Forces. One student who returned to Seaford Cemetery after school said, ‘I was inspired by the stories we heard and wanted to share them with my mum.’ Photo: Annecy students with some of the soldiers at the memorial. Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Seaford Photographic Society We are continuing to refine our ‘hybrid’ system of meetings and this is proving very successful. We now have a laptop, webcam, microphones and PA speakers in the hall, and this allows those who are still concerned about the Covid situation, or are unable to attend in person due to ill health, to participate on-line via Zoom. We are also able to accommodate guest judges or speakers to do their presentations remotely from home if required. For the rest of us, it’s great to be meeting in person again and doing a bit of socialising. The first competition of the new season was Round One of the PDI League for Projected Digital Images. This was a try-out of the new hybrid system and we had around 16 people at the Con Club with another 13 at home (or away on holiday!) on Zoom. Our competition judge for the evening was Bob Webzel, from Rottingdean, and he said afterwards: ‘I have nothing but praise for how the evening went’. This was much appreciated and it was good to see Bob back at the club again, as he had judged our last competition before we went into Lockdown last March. There were 48 images entered, equally split between the two groups. Well done to David Nickalls and Martin Brewer in the standard group, and Adrian Bishop, Jennie Edwards and Simon Rigby in the advanced group, who all scored the maximum 20/20. The following week we had two talks by club members. Our digital secretary Simon Rigby introduced us to the basics of ON1 photo editing software. This combines many of the functions of both Lightroom

16

and Photoshop, but without the need for a monthly subscription. After the usual break for a drink and chat we were treated to a very detailed talk by our chairman, Colin Mitchell, entitled Understanding Your Digital Camera. To round off September’s meetings we had the second round of the PDI League competition, judged remotely from south London by Paul Parkinson ARPS CPAGB BPE2*. There were over 50 images to get through this time, of which only 4 were awarded 20/20 scores, so well done to Peter Cavanagh and David Nickalls in the standard group, and Simon Watkins and Anna-Marie Armstrong in the advanced group. Paul commented on the high standard of the club’s photography, particularly some of the nature and wildlife images, which he thought were good enough to do well in regional competitions. We have decided to postpone our annual exhibition to late May next year as we feel that there are likely to be many more people out and about by then. We are all looking forward to this and it will be great to have some of our prints on display to the public again after a two-and-a-half-year gap. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including the latest news, progamme of events, successful images, competition results, and more. It is updated weekly. Images, all scored 20/20 in competions (from top): Reaching Up, by David Nickalls; Migrant Hawkers Mating, by Simon Watkins; Dredger Entering Harbour, by Martin Brewer; The Painted Lady, by Anna-Marie Armstrong; Tawny Owl, by Simon Rigby.

UNO ONE:

An Autumn Selection Exhibition of Fine Art & Craft, Featuring the work of the Sussex Arts Collective The Sussex Arts Collective is back! Following a remarkable twist of fate and a series of coincidences, this popular exhibiting art group has found a new home in Seaford to exhibit and sell their work. This exciting development will be the first time they will have had a presence on the high street in their own dedicated space – GALLERY UNO. It will not only provide the Seaford town centre with a much needed commercial venue for art and craft, but will add to the growing number of diverse and appealing independent shops and provide even more reason to shop locally. As of 4th November they will be presenting a new series of 12 monthly exhibitions of eclectic fine art, design and craft at 14 High Street, the first of which is aptly named UNO ONE, An Autumnal Selection. It will be a real tonic for the artists and craftspeople taking part who, not surprisingly, have found it tough over the last 18 months. As visitors to their numerous exhibitions at Lewes House, the HOP, The Grange, The Old Brighton Fishing Quarter and The Crypt Galleries have come to expect, they will be displaying a vibrant variety of work from the rich seam of local artists and makers

18

from across the county. Their unique approach to juxtaposing fine art alongside graphic design and craft has previously captivated patrons who have purchased their work, and having their own gallery will enable them to develop this approach further. The Sussex Arts Collective was formed 17 years ago by ceramic artist Phil Duncan. He identified, as a fledgling maker himself whilst he was still teaching, that there was a need for inexpensive venues for emerging artists. Initially he and his wife opened their house for Artwave, but soon found that their gathering collection of prospective exhibitors needed a bigger space to accommodate them all. One thing led to another and his reputation as a personable and considerate curator soon spread far and wide. At its peak there were over 80 members of the Collective. GALLERY UNO marks a significant turning point in their illustrious history and a step change in how they exhibit and sell their work to wider audiences. Throughout the shows you’ll have an opportunity to meet the exhibitors themselves and discuss their work with them. It will quickly become apparent to you regardless of whether you are looking for an investment in a major piece of art, a piece of pottery or glass, something to enhance your interior décor or a thoughtful and special gift for someone, that you’ll be assured you’ll be acquiring a distinctive piece of artwork conceived and created from scratch. Genuine quality yet affordability are the key attributes to their success. They’ll look forward to seeing you soon. Uno One at Gallery Uno, 14 High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG. Open: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays 12pm – 3pm CLOSED Wednesdays, from Thursday 4th November until Tuesday 30th November.

CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS Saturday 11th December, Seaford Baptist Church Concentus is really relishing being back, rehearsing in person for their Christmas Concerts – albeit well socially distanced, wearing masks and with their fingers crossed to ward Covid off from disrupting things again! Musical Director, Adrian White, has arranged another interesting and varied programme to get your festivities off to a flying start. You will find well loved favourites throughout and plenty of new pieces to try, both classical and modern. From the classical world the choir will sing pieces which range from the gentle and contemplative in Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine and C Franck’s Panis Angelicus through to the majestic and vibrant with Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Worthy is the Lamb and Amen Chorus, with his Nightingale Chorus thrown in for good measure! More modern pieces are not neglected and include, amongst many others, All I want for Christmas (Carey, Afanasieff) and The colours of Christmas a Rutter favourite. Carols are there too, two of them new to Concentus – Rutter’s Donkey Carol which follows Mary on her ride to Bethlehem and the rumbustious Ragtime Carol (Hewitt, Bloor) singing and shouting in joyful praise of the new Jesus baby. Many of you will enjoy hearing the Frog Song, We all stand together from Paul McCartney’s short animated film with Rupert Bear and Somewhere in my Memory from Home Alone. Adrian will ask the audience to join in with three traditional carols as usual, as long as congregational

singing is allowed. And there is much more for you to enjoy in this packed concert with the choir also drawing together two separate groups of singers and soloists to delight you. Altogether an afternoon for everybody to enjoy, and for Concentus, a celebration of being able at last to sing for you again – a real live audience! Concentus will be singing on Saturday 11th December at Seaford Baptist Church, with tickets available from: Box Office 07789 343514/07920 430162, Newbury Tully Estate Agents in Church Street, or online at www.concentus.ticketsource. co.uk. The Eastbourne concert is at St Saviour’s Church South Street on Saturday 18th December, with tickets available from: the Box Office numbers above, Semantics in Grove Road, Eastbourne Tourist Information Office, or online at the above website. Note down the dates and watch out for publicity nearer to the time so you, your family and friends can join Concentus in a joyous celebration of Christmas. Find out about Concentus and how welcome you will be if you decide to join the choir at: www.concentus-sings.com.

Seaford Museum and Heritage Society If you have visited Seaford Museum you will have met at least one of the friendly stewards. There are three stewards on duty whenever the Museum is open. They are all volunteers and get a great deal of satisfaction from the time they put in. Talking to visitors is often fascinating. Not only do visitors appreciate the extra information the stewards can give them but the stewards also learn snippets of information from visitors. We are looking for new volunteers to add to the stewarding team. Don’t be put off by thinking that volunteering as a steward is a huge commitment. Stewards typically put in one or two mornings or afternoons a month but some do more or less. If you would like to find out more about what being a steward involves, please come down to the museum when it is open, have a chat with one of the stewards on duty and, if you want to take it further, leave your name and contact details, and we will get in touch with you. Alternatively email us on info@seafordmuseum.co.uk. A couple recently donated a piece of brown paper they had found under their floorboards. The paper had been wrapped around a food parcel sent from Canada to a Canadian soldier based in Seaford. The parcel was dated November 1942 and a series of stickers suggest that it was a Christmas present. It must have been very welcome as the contents included a tin of peaches, a can of tomato juice, soup and a fruit cake. The happy recipient of this parcel was Private John Ernest Colclough. John Colclough was, in fact, English. He was born, out of wedlock and in poverty, in Warwickshire in 1907. His mother sued his father for child support. His step-father was killed in France in 1917 and his mother, Nellie, died in the workhouse during the 1918 flu pandemic. By then John had been taken into care because of his behaviour. John’s sister went to live with an aunt and his younger half-brother was sent to an orphanage. John was sent to Canada through the Middlemore Homes as a child migrant. He went to the largely rural state of New Brunswick. Like many of the children he was fostered by a farming couple, but was moved after a year as they were said

not to have been strict enough. His next home was with another couple, also farmers, with whom he stayed for some time. He helped around the house and farm and went to school while he was there but he was not close to them. John was in the Canadian Army by 1940 and survived the war although details of his service remain a mystery. He later became a labourer. John never married but kept in touch with his sister Elsie until she died. His great niece Melanie, now in New Zealand, thinks he was happy to be solitary. He died in 2001. Photo: John Colclough (left) with his siter, brother and aunt.

Teddy Treats partners Seaford Streetfunk Classes

Teddy Treats children’s charity, one of the Mayor of Seaford’s chosen charities, has joined forces with Streetfunk to sponsor young dancers in Seaford.

Together, Teddy Treats and Streetfunk are bringing dance, energy and fun into children’s lives by providing them with an outlet where they can express themselves through dance and learn the history of dancing along the way. The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed, opened the first dance class in Seaford in September this year. Streetfunk is a multi-award-winning dance company/ school providing Streetdance and Hip Hop dance classes to everyone ranging from 4 years to 18 years across Sussex. It was founded by award-winning JP Omari, who is widely known in the UK Hip Hop dance scene for his dedicated work in the community dance sector over the last 15 years. Although Hip Hop dance is at the forefront of Streetfunk’s activities, what is most important to JP are

the qualities that make one not only a good dancer but also a decent, respectable and confident person through hard work, discipline and respect. In class, children learn the importance of these qualities alongside the ability to express themselves freely and have fun through dance. ‘We are committed to creating a positive lifestyle where Hip Hop dance is taught in a fun environment where discipline, hard work and respect are paramount. We stand against lethargy and cultivate passion and funk in every person’, says JP. The Streetfunk classes are every Wednesday at the Common Room, 2 Old Tree Parade, Seaford, BN25 1LU. Beginners (6 - 8yrs) at 4pm to 5pm. Intermediate (9 - 13yrs) at 5pm to 6pm. …and all of a sudden autumn was upon us. Seemingly overnight the wind got up, the temperature went down and it was all change in the garden. One week we were congratulating ourselves on how well the tomatoes had done in the polytunnel; the total numbers were perhaps a little down on previous years, but given the vagaries of the weather it was not a bad crop and luckily no sign of the blight which had blighted (excuse the pun) so many other tomatoes in Seaford. But the following week, with little fruit left to ripen we cut our losses and cleared everything away. In comparison with the tomatoes, our cucumbers had been hugely successful this year – Mini Munch seemed to be the preferred choice so we have already ordered more seed for next year. But again, with no more flowers and cold nights upon us we assumed that they had finished cropping. Needless to say, as Abdul cleared away the plant debris, in amongst the mass of vegetation we discovered several unnoticed fruits which went straight to Maggie on the gate. Once everything had been loaded into the compost bins, Abdul weeded the beds and all was ready for next year when that bed will become the base for our potting tables and the bed on the opposite side of the path will be prepared for the tomatoes and cucumbers of 2022. And so the cycle continues… Outside, only the week before there were still plenty of runner beans to pick, and Phil’s new sowing of French beans was producing plenty. But the cold and winds had again taken their toll so Beth cleared the runner bean plants, leaving the beds bare, ready for a good thick layer of compost for next year’s crops and a possible late sowing of spinach.

28

Most of the vegetables might have finished – although the kale and broccoli continue to sprout and the leeks are beginning to come ready for harvesting – but there were plenty of ornamental flowers still to be admired. Even now there were blooms on the roses, Caryopteris, Oleander and Salvias (despite the latter two originating from much warmer climes) and the sedums were colouring up beautifully. We also made a start planting up our donated shady container (aka the old water tank). Maggie had already put in a Virginia creeper in the hope that it will cover the fence behind, and Katie added a Tricyrtis formosana (otherwise known as a Toad Lily), an Amsonia which will have beautiful bright blue flowers and golden autumn leaf colour, evergreen Tiarella which produces pink flowers in the spring plus a foxglove and a primrose for good measure. Later in the season we will add some small bulbs. We’re trying to add plants which we don’t yet have anywhere else in the garden but will provide all year interest and inspiration those who only have a shady corner to fill. And finally the joy (or perhaps the horror for some!) of autumn … spiders! Happily enjoying the polytunnel wiring was a beautifully marked Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus), with its distincive white cross on the abdomen, preparing an orb in which to trap its prey of flying insects (or perhaps Bob, above whose herbs she was making a home)! The Garden Team Photos from top: Oleander; Rose hip; Tricyrtis; Caryopter; Sedum; gaden spider.

they can be annoying, even harmful to others, and could make you unpopular with your neighbours. It’s true that burning will destroy plant diseases, but high temperature local authority composting of green waste will kill most, and even home composting can deal with less-persistent diseases. As for those autumn leaves, just bag them up to make leaf mould. Black bin liners are fine; puncture several holes in the base and sides to help drainage and allow air flow, then stack them out of sight for a year or two, maybe behind the potting shed.

t

‘Sing a song of seasons! Something bright in all! Flowers in the summer, Fires in the fall!’ Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the poem Autumn Fires in Victorian times, when the annual autumn bonfires disposed of non-compostable material, including disease ridden branches and woody roots. This practise was common until fairly recently; the smell of wood smoke still takes me back to my great aunt Maud’s country garden, and great uncle Ernie puffing on his pipe as he tended his bonfire. Bonfires in your garden are not illegal, but

common nettle

Our September social evening featured a Foraging talk with Gillian Edom; an interesting subject with special mention for the Common Nettle (Urtica dioica) as food (soup or greens), drink (tea or beer), and a strong fibre, which once rivalled flax. Nettles have been foraged for food and cures for centuries – our ancestors recognised their many benefits, while modern gardeners in general have made sure that this stinger is outlawed. I do in fact have a nettle patch in my garden; it arrived uninvited, but I let it stay and develop to support wildlife. Nettles are the number one destination for ladybirds with eggs to lay, they are also a primary food source for many caterpillars, including those of the small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies. In late summer huge quantities of seed feed the birds. Your nettle patch can also provide a nitrogen-rich liquid plant feed, or mix chopped nettles into your compost where they will speed up decomposition, but don’t add the roots. Inspired by Gillian’s talk I can benefit from eating young, nutrient-rich nettle leaves. Samuel Pepys ate nettle porridge in 17th-century London; I think I will stick to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s very green soup!

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB This month we are looking forward to welcoming Michelle King on 18th November when she will be demonstrating ‘Christmas Carousel’. This year I know we are all looking forward to a very different Christmas from last year. We are sure that Michelle will have some exciting ideas for us. Our competition is entitled Autumn Hues and I am certain our members will not disappoint with the usual array of creative designs. In September, in a change to our programme, we were treated to a splendid demonstration by Barbara Caldecourt and our competition was Sunshine and Showers, quite appropriate for September this year, as I believe there was more sunshine than showers for a change. Some of our members took part in St Leonard’s Flower Festival – Window on the World. The church

looked beautiful and was filled with 20 splendid and very colourful displays. Looking ahead, on 16th December, we are planning

a Christmas Workshop entitled Make your own Christmas Table Decoration – just in time for the big event.

We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for the year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or SueWard on 01323 894848 for further details.

Headteacher Paul Gallagher, Reception class teacher Frankie Chappell and School secretary Chris Baillie have all been selected as winners in this year’s awards, which recognise the contribution teaching, support staff and volunteers make to a successful school.

Annecy Catholic Primary School is part of the BOSCO Catholic Education Trust, a group of schools in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton who have come together to work collaboratively for the benefit of all children in the Catholic schools of Sussex. ‘We are all thrilled to have been told we are award winners,’ says Headteacher Paul Gallagher. ‘It is great to have members of my team recognised for their hard work during a very challenging period of time and for their efforts in ensuring the children at Annecy are well looked after academically and pastorally. We are looking forward to finding out which awards we have won.’ Award categories include primary, secondary, newly qualified teacher, non-teaching member of staff, including midday supervisors and caretakers, and a volunteer award, which includes members of the PTA and governors.

East Sussex Moviemakers

Film making, and film watching resumed in July since when members have had an evening on Eastbourne’s seafront capturing the sights and sounds on a summer’s evening, filming a 1-minute comedy with guest actors Jan & Cliff Bendall – if only the neighbour’s baby hadn’t cried, and the emergency services vehicle had turned off their siren it would have only have taken an hour, instead of two! On other club evenings at St Lukes, Stone Cross, members have watched award-winning films made by British, and Foreign, film makers; the subjects have been wide-ranging, some requiring ‘an acquired taste’ but all of a high standard of vision and sound. On 6th October it was the club’s annual film competition. Members were invited to enter one or more films, and to bring a guest. Five films were entered, the winning one entitled Tynham – the lost village featured the village in Dorset which was taken over by the Ministry of Defence during the second world war as a firing range. All the residents were required to leave their homes, the school was closed, and the buildings used as target practice for the army. It is still retained for that purpose, but the village is open for visitors at weekends. The film, made by member Alan Tutt, captured the atmosphere of dereliction, and the sadness which the residents must have felt as they deserted their homes – never to return. Later in October the club has their AGM and will make plans for 2022. Anyone with even the slightest interest in watching quality amateur films or helping with the tasks involved in film-making, is welcome to join with us. For details visit our website: www.eastsussexmoviemakers.com or contact Val MacManus on 07590904778. We are a friendly club with members prepared to assist those new to film making.

Past Mayor of Seaford, Jon Freeman’s Passing Seaford Town Council is saddened to hear of the passing of Past Mayor of Seaford, Jon Freeman The Town Council sends its deepest condolences to Past Mayor Freeman’s family and remembers his contributions to the town. Having been a serving Town Councillor from 1999 to 2011, Mayor of Seaford in 2003 and Leader of the Town Council from 2004 to 2011, it was with great regret that the Town Council learnt of the passing of Jon. Looking at the list of titles held by Jon, this begins to build a picture of how influential he was within the town – being a part of the Town Council from its inception in 1999 and continuing to be a part of this, on a voluntary basis, for a further 12 years! As a councillor, Jon was involved in delivering many amazing projects and initiatives for the town. As a Mayor and Leader of the Town Council, there were many times in which he was leading this change, through good times and more challenging, but always with one aim – for the betterment of the town, for the people of Seaford. Jon had a particular passion for representing people, ensuring their voices and needs were being heard and met, and that the Town Council was doing that within its power to really make a difference. Despite having hung up his town councillor hat in 2011, Jon was still heavily involved in many groups and projects – he will be sorely missed by the town. Speaking about working alongside him, current Town Councillor Linda Wallraven said, ‘It came with much sadness to learn of Jon’s passing. He had a wonderful character and it was a pleasure to have known and worked alongside him during my early days as a Councillor, up to when he left in 2011. Jon worked hard for the council and the town and in recognition

he was awarded the Mayor’s Award for his voluntary work. Jon will be very much missed by all who knew him and my condolences go to his family’. The serving Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed, said, ‘As Mayor of Seaford and on behalf of our Town and the Seaford Town Council, I want to take this opportunity to recognise the public service of Mr Jon Freeman, his contribution to our community in a rich variety of ways during the course of many years in Civic life. We pass on the Council’s and town’s condolences to his wife Chrissie and to his wider family in their bereavement.’ To borrow a quote from Jon himself whilst Mayor: ‘We do not expect to find another like (him) – but we can all share in building on the wonderful work (he) started. Thank you, (Jon) for everything!’ Photo l-r: Jon Freeman’s Mayor Making ceremony with past Mayor and Freeman of the Town, Laurie Holland.

How to stop dementia from progressing Dementia is a group of symptoms that can range from memory loss to impaired thinking and problem-solving abilities which usually occurs in old age. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of progressive dementia, which according to a recent study can be prevented through different activities. It has been found that providing independence to dementia patients in their day-to-day functions not only helped them live well, but also made them manage their condition better and more efficiently. Researchers highlight five such activities that promote independence in patients and prevent disease progression.

1. Decluttering or sorting out

Whilst a person with dementia may not be capable of handling all the household chores, they can help declutter, meaning they can help remove all nonessential and unnecessary items from overcrowded places. Removing trip hazards is important for all older people, as our balance and sight decrease with age. It’s particularly helpful for those with dementia who can struggle with their sense of depth or perception, putting them at higher risk of falls. Given people with dementia may struggle to find things, decluttering makes it easier to find what they need – helping them stay independent for longer.

2. Mopping

Being physically active can reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses. Those with dementia can also benefit from it. Mopping is great cardio, with an hour burning off up to 170 calories – equivalent to 15 minutes jogging on a treadmill! Cardiovascular exercises are particularly good for preventing vascular dementia – a common form triggered by a lack of blood circulation in the brain. Another benefit of mopping constitutes the strengthening of our core, reducing the risk of injuries.

Advertising Feature

3. Gardening

Gardening can also be a good way to exercise. It can help manage stress levels and limit feelings of anxiety. Gardening and being outdoors can help people manage depression, which can exhibit similar symptoms to dementia such as difficulty concentrating, disturbed sleep, confusion, and memory lapses. As a result, depression can make the symptoms of dementia seem worse.

4. Cooking meals

Home-cooked meals are a great way to avoid processed foods that are bad for our cardiovascular health. For people living with dementia, cooking and baking can be a good way to get enjoyment – retaining those important feelings of purpose and independence. It not only helps people with dementia stay on their feet but also prevents cognitive decline.

5. Making tea and drinking with friends and family

Research shows that withdrawal from society can lead to cognitive decline. That said, it is important to keep individuals with dementia active and engaged. Therefore, let them make you some tea and enjoy it together. As well as maintaining our social skills, staying hydrated will defend you from UTIs and constipation. Both can cause delirium, intensifying the symptoms of dementia. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Trees for Seaford Remember Remember – plant trees in November That’s what Trees for Seaford plans to be doing anyhow! Bare-root and root-balled trees and shrubs are only available in autumn and winter, and should be planted as soon as possible after delivery. Though container-grown trees can be planted any time of year, they are also easier to care for if planted this time of year, as they need less watering. However it’s best to avoid planting in waterlogged or frozen soil if you can, so November should be ideal. This year Trees for Seaford volunteers and residents are looking forward to planting over 100 new trees this autumn. We are also delighted that we will be getting some specialist advice and training at the first planting session from tree expert Keith Sacre. Trees are on order, ready to plant in Kingston Way, Tudor Close, Westdown Road, Annecy School, Walmer Road and at the Downs Leisure centre in collaboration with Friends of Sutton Downs.

What else have we been up to? Well in early September we joined lots of other Seaford charities at the ‘Support our Seaford Charities’ event in the Martello Fields, where we were delighted to meet lots of people interested in trees. We had biscuits to give away, and seemed like we never stopped talking! A hugely successful day at our stand, shared by our partners On the Verge and Seaford Environmental Alliance. Many thanks to everyone who helped before, during and after the event, with a special thank you to Jean.

58

Our regular tree care sessions included checking the young Elms at Southdown Corner. All the vegetation around the roots was cleared, and new mulch mats added where necessary. As the meadow was due to be cut by contractors, our work should avoid any accidental damage to our precious trees, which now can be seen more easily. One of the biggest challenges for our trees in the summer is getting enough water. Not so much of a problem that day, very persistent rain that luckily didn’t deter our hardy volunteers! We also managed to talk to a couple of local residents, who agreed to keep an eye on these particular trees, and give them a water during hot spells! We are always keen to hear from people who would like to monitor and care for the trees near where they live. Do get in touch if you think you can help with this. After our rather soggy and muddy assignment, we were all ready to enjoy coffee and the view, nearby at The View! At the end of September, we joined On the Verge volunteers at one of the pilot Nature Streets – Saltwood Road. Volunteers again cleared the grass and weeds from around tree trunks, and then laid a woodchip mulch, kindly donated by Climpson Bros. On the Verge were also there planting seeds and bulbs, donated by the Seaford CARES Lottery Project, so the verges should be even better pathways for our wildlife, by next year. Thanks to Seaford Town council for their ongoing support. Photos from top: working hard to protect the Elms at Southdown Road; Trees and verges in Saltwood Road; Support Our Seaford Charities event.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

How to Prepare for a New Home in 2022 2020 was a miserable write-off for most of us due to the pandemic. And 2021 has been a bit of a slog with the Covid-19 fallout, energy price hikes, and fuel queues in town, making the queues outside shops during traditional New Year sales look like child’s play.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

But there is good news on the horizon, especially if you are thinking of moving home in the new year. The property market in Seaford remains strong. We’re still seeing plenty of activity as people continue to evaluate what they want from their humble abodes.

3) Change your mindset – If you’ve made

Below are three things you can do to take advantage of the current situation, sell successfully, and make your move in 2022.

At Newberry Tully, we only market twenty properties at any one time. This allows us to spend more time helping clients because we’re more interested in customer care than market share.

1) Get ready – If your goal is to be in a new home in the New Year, get odd jobs around the house sorted, organise your property’s paperwork (guarantees, warranties etc.) and begin decluttering. In our experience, nearly everyone has too much stuff, plenty of which they won’t miss if it’s gone.

2) Call in the agents – Call in three local agents to give you a valuation. Don’t be swayed purely by the highest valuation. Look for a good track record, strong Google reviews, a clear marketing plan, and listen to your gut instinct.

up your mind and are sure you want a new home in the New Year, start thinking like a prospective buyer. Ask your friends (especially the ones who always speak their minds) what they think of your home and how you can make it more appealing.

We’re here to answer any question you have about selling or buying a property in Seaford and Bishopstone. Thanks for reading.

Seaford Youth Forum

USE IT OR LOSE IT

The Forum’s task is to promote the ‘keep it local’ idea and 112 shops and businesses in Seaford have signed up to the scheme. Let’s take a look at the next group of shops supporting our ‘Use It or Lose It’ campaign, starting this time in Dane Rd where Richie’s Café, Diella’s, Cup-A-Cabana, Strandz, Seaford Properties, Yorworths, Baca’s and Rowland Gorringe. Moving into Church Street, we find Fox&Co, No38, Badger Inks, Trawlers and Seaford Health Shop, and, on the other side, Philip Mann, Peter Trevor, Shortcuts and Newberry Tully. Beyond the church on the left we have Church Lane Tea Rooms, Sedici, Osborne’s Fish and Chips and Age Concern and do please don’t forget INLE now in new premises in Clinton Place). Turning now into the bottom end of High Street we find another range of shops where some of them have again expressed concerns that they are off the beaten track; Brooke Thompson, The Tattoo Parlour, Flowers and Pots, Sunnyside Sisters Café, K And L Jewellers, Totally Wicked, Your Construction, Craftstone and Gabriella’s the greengrocers are all involved along with Walbrin’s on the corner. On the opposite side they are joined by Seaford Antiques, Seaford Podiatry and the delights of Amie’s Kitchen. I should mention that Marks Antiques, while not wishing to join, very kindly donated the trophy which will be presented to the winning school. Crossing Broad Street to the top end of High Street we’ve been supported by Room, Onneka, for a short time Front Room, The Barber’s Shop and La Mediterranea. Sitting in the window there and looking down Broad Street made me appreciate what a vibrant and versatile shopping area we have, so let’s explore it and use it. Turning to another of the Forum’s fund raisers we’ve been collecting bras to be sent to African countries in a scheme run by one of the Cancer charities. We have 286 to date and will add to that those collected at Seaford Head School. If you are one of those who have donated we are most grateful for your help.

Seaford u3a News Members of Seaford u3a have had the opportunity recently to take part in a group examining the problem of climate change and the responses of individuals, communities and governments to it. This group has been timed to enable members to understand the complexities of the COP26 conference which will take place for two weeks in October/November 2021 in Glasgow. This is a meeting of global leaders who are tasked with committing their countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a level which by 2050 will be net-zero – that no more emissions are produced than are collected or mitigated – in an effort to keep the world’s average temperature at no more than 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. Such a group is in line with u3a’s ethos of lifelong learning, and many of the members take part in this type of group, be it in science and technology, literature, history or other academic subjects. However many other groups have a purely ‘fun’ element to them such as Scrabble, cookery, art and music. Many other members do not join groups at all, but simply come to the talks, at the Downs Leisure Centre or at the Con Club where the ‘Tea Parties’ will offer a talk and tea-time snacks, or take part in outings, the pub lunch or attend the coffee mornings. There is no ‘one size fits all’ in u3a! The coffee morning is often the new or prospective member’s first port of call. This takes place at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford on the third Wednesday of each month between 10am and 12 noon. The next one will be on 17th November. There is a small charge of £2 for coffee (or tea) and biscuits, and newcomers will be likely to find other members very welcoming. Committee members are on hand to introduce them to anyone they do not know in order to make them feel at home. This event is open to non-members as well as members and there is no need to book. Just come along. The pub lunch is open only to members and takes place at the White Lion on Claremont Road, Seaford. It is necessary to book and details are given in the monthly Newsletter which is sent by email or by post to all members.

Early November sees the start of the programme of outings which had to be abandoned with the onset of Covid. The first trip, to Westminster Abbey, was originally planned for March 2020, which seems a very long time ago. Even those members who do not drive can go on these outings, as travel is usually by coach. This outing will be reviewed next month. Members of Seaford u3a are also automatically members of the Sussex u3a Network which, amongst other things, runs Zoom talks on Saturday mornings on subjects usually with a ‘Sussex’ interest. More information on the programme is included in the monthly Newsletter. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com, sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Photo: Climate Change group in action.

Mink: fashion victims

The Wind in the Willows is one of Britain’s most beloved books. Yet this story of riverbank wildlife would have lost some of its charm if, in the final chapter, Kenneth Grahame had introduced a new character; a deranged American serial killer who eats his victims. It’s easy to cast American mink as the bad guys. With long, sleek bodies equipped with razor sharp teeth they’re natural born killers, as vicious in water as they are on land. Part polecat, part piranha. But it was the mink’s adaptation to winter and water – thick, waterproof fur – that was its downfall. Enter the real villains of this tale; the ghastly humans who craved mink fur coats and the greedy ones keen to profit from a mink massacre. American mink were first imported to the UK in 1929. By the fifties, British mink farms were springing up everywhere, including Sussex, producing pelts at full pelt. But fur farmers had overlooked one important thing; mink were smarter than they were. Mary Potter remembers the Buxted farm; ‘They built the cages with ordinary wire netting. The mink made short work of that and escaped. With stronger netting, they started again with more mink, but again, the wire was no match for their teeth. After a third attempt with stronger wire netting they gave up and just released them.’ The result of a new alien predator invading our waterways was catastrophic. Kingfishers, ducks, moorhens, fish and toads suddenly found themselves on the mink’s menu and were swiftly dispatched with a Dracula-style neck bite. The worst victim was the water vole – Ratty from The Wind in the Willows – which mink almost completely eradicated from Sussex. The late (and legendary) Jim ‘The Fish’ Smith walked and worked the River Ouse for decades. He first encountered a mink when one cruised past him downstream on a piece of driftwood. ‘I had never seen a mink before and at first had no idea what it was,’ said Jim ‘but it wasn’t long before we saw God knows how many along the river.’ During the sixties, Jim and four

others were employed to trap and humanely kill mink along the Ouse. ‘In those days we were doing nothing else but trapping mink. We were catching 25-30 a week.’ Thankfully, fashions and attitudes change. Mink farms are gone but their ferocious, furry legacy remains in our rivers. ‘These days you don’t see that many mink, so I have to conclude that the effort we have put in to controlling them has been successful,’ said Jim, ‘but you’re never going to get rid of all of them.’ Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photos: Mink by Darin Smith©. Sussex Wildlife Trust is an independent charity caring for wildlife and habitats throughout Sussex. Founded in 1961, we have worked with local people for over half a century to make Sussex richer in wildlife. We rely on the support of our members to help protect our rich natural heritage. Please consider supporting our work. As a member you will be invited to join Michael Blencowe on our regular wildlife walks and also enjoy free events, discounts on wildlife courses, Wildlife magazine and our Sussex guide book, Discovering Wildlife. C RY P T GALLERY

November. Already. You’d better believe it. This year has gone by so fast it has made our heads spin. Thank goodness for those periods of calm spent gazing at artwork or incredible craft pieces. So escape from the torrential rain and gusting wind this month by entering the tranquil space that is the Crypt Gallery and breathe a sigh of relief. But if your mind is still rattling with thoughts of present purchasing, our exhibitors will have unique solutions to many of your gift questions. Sorted!

LitFest 21 Music

The gallery’s month starts off on 6th November at 3pm with a LitFest 21 music event with Maeve Jenkinson and Martin Neill, who are returning to the Crypt with another wonderful programme from their classical repertoire, featuring the music of J S Bach. Maeve is a violin soloist and also takes part in recitals. She is a member of the Sussex Chamber Ensemble, is musical director of the Corelli Ensemble, leads the Ludlay String Quartet and regularly plays with the London Philharmonic. Martin says he became a composer the first day he touched a piano and since then he has written hundreds of children’s songs, many of which have been performed at the many schools where he’s worked, as well as in The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican and in New York. From 11th to 17th November we welcome back Lynn Beck and Linda Wells. Lynn mainly works with acrylics, and is inspired by the local scenery and well known landmarks. Linda works in a variety of media including ceramics and textiles, which complement Lynn’s artwork in a gallery space.

The exhibition will be open between 2pm and 5pm on 11th November and then 10am to 5pm every day.

The Sketch Show

This unique opportunity to view illustrators’ initial ideas and preliminary sketches, featuring work donated by some of the UK’s best known illustrators, is being brought to the gallery by Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printers, otherwise known as SCIP. All the work will be included in an online exhibition on SCIP’s website: wearescip. co.uk, which is open from 17th November for bids. The exhibition is designed to highlight the freedom of sketching and its contribution to artists’ creative processes, allowing ideas to grow through experimentation and practice, so, alongside the exhibition, SCIP will also be providing free children’s art workshops on Saturday and Sunday to pass on the art of sketchbooking. To book a place (suitable for kids age 5+) go to wearescip.co.uk. The Sketch Show is on from 19th to 21st November and open from 10am to 5pm.

Crypt 5

The month rounds off with another exciting group exhibition. Crypt5 features five Sussex artists: Gareth Hayward; Stefan Mucha; Bluebell Roebuck; Mark Munroe-Preston and Adele Scantlebury showcasing an exciting and diverse portfolio of contemporary art and print styles from photography to woodblock prints and much inbetween. The exhibition is open 10am to 5pm from 24th to 28th November, with something for every taste. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Reusable party kit available to rent from Annecy Primary school Love parties but hate waste? Well that’s what a Reusable Party Kit is for! It’s hardly a groundbreaking idea I know, but sadly the norm these days is people choosing single-use throwaway items like cups, plates and bunting as a more convenient alternative when reusable makes more sense. We use too many resources and create too much waste. While parties may be one small part of the problem, we can make them more sustainable by ditching the disposables. The idea came about thanks to Claire, founder of Plastic Free Seaford, who found the Party Kit Network (www.partykitnetwork.org) idea online and thought it was a brilliant one. The website makes it easy to switch to reusables when hosting a party, making it a simple and money-saving swap from needless and thoughtless throwaway partyware. It’s a kit of six bright colours, 10 sets of each one; a set is made up of plates, cups and cutlery. We are on the hunt for preloved platters and jugs to add to it.

It is only £10 to hire which is a big saving from the cost of £17 on average for a single use throwaway one. So, planning a children’s party? Hire the kit! It comes with ‘Happy Birthday’ fabric bunting too that was handmade by a pupil’s grandmother – what’s not to love! Thanks to Annecy Catholic Primary school for taking on the idea. Email Claire at: plasticfreeseaford@gmail.com or contact her through the Plastic Free Seaford Facebook page to hire it out!

International charitable work was supported by Members of Seaford Inner Wheel during the autumn. Members filled shoes boxes for families and elderly people in Eastern Europe with essential items including a woolly hat, toothbrush/toothpaste, soap and flannel, and candles. Small, fun items were also included in the boxes which were packed in members’ homes – all the while enjoying friendship. This charitable project is supported by Link to Hope, which is based in Ferring. Link to Hope co-ordinates the collection and distribution of filled shoe boxes, aiming to combat poverty and to give humanitarian aid for the most disadvantaged people struggling to survive in poor villages in Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria. Recyclable packaging was used so that minimum waste was passed on to the places where the shoes boxes will be delivered. As well as providing humanitarian aid, Link to Hope also prioritises work with the most vulnerable, especially children and the most marginalised, as well as the most exploited, the families and individuals who are at the mercy of authorities and circumstances over which they have no control. Link to Hope’s vision is that one day every person in Eastern Europe will have a safe environment to live in and access to basic health care, human rights, employment and education. In addition to supplying 24 filled shoe boxes, members donated £3 per box to cover transport costs. Photos l-r: Anne Page-Phillips, Ann Fenwick and Mary Morris.

On the Verge ‘Verge’ – the point beyond which something begins or occurs. It’s hard to believe that On the Verge only came into being in February this year. Lockdown meant that we all started to value our local neighbourhood more. On the Verge is a group of community volunteers who are passionate about improving Seaford green pathways, full of creative ideas to improve our green corridors for people and wildlife. We work in partnership with Trees for Seaford, Seaford Environmental Alliance and are part of the Seaford CARES Lottery project. We do it because we are concerned about the decrease in biodiversity in our green spaces, including the catastrophic decline of insects by 75% in the past 50 years, and their food plants. Insects are vital, as pollinators, as recyclers of organic matter and as part of the food chain, without which there would be no birds, bats and mammals either.

‘Verge’ – to move in a specified direction. What have we done? We’ve attended community events in Seaford, given out leaflets and free plants and seeds and talked to lots of residents and listened to their thoughts, ideas and concerns. We supported the council with their plans to change their mowing regimes to create mini meadows in green spaces, and our green space ambassadors have been closely watching those green spaces for signs of increased biodiversity. We never forget that green spaces are for people too, and it may take some time and expertise to get the balance right.

‘Verge’ – a grass border along a road. A few years ago, the council reduced the cutting of verges and many residents have appreciated the longer grass and the flowers and insects that come with it. In fact, the council is now receiving more and more complaints about mowing of the flowers in the verges! Of course, some verges need to be cut short for safety reasons, but across the UK, if verges were cut less, it would be the equivalent of creating a new wildlife habitat the size of Dorset! We’re talking to the councils and councillors to improve biodiversity to our green spaces and pathways, and to help inform and inspire people as to why this is so important. Do check out our webpage and blog for more details. Do let your council know if you support increased biodiversity in our town; positive comments will help our cause.

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD At our last meeting the speaker for the day was Mr John Lawrenson. John Gave us a fascinating talk on the subject of Double Acts in the Movies. John’s thesis was that members of a double act were both ‘idiots’: but they were different sorts of idiot. Some were pompous, some were humble, some were aggressive, some were submissive. There were a number of well-recognised relationships: master/servant; good/bad; forceful/gullible. Using the example of Laurel and Hardy we saw the dominant idiot, who does not realise he is an idiot, the submissive scapegoat (‘fine mess you have got us into’), and the one with ideas above his station. John pointed out that with many successful double acts they were badly dressed (Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore), were timid and easily scared, and often spoke or squabbled in a child-like fashion. Techniques used were often ‘tit-for-tat’, for example one of the partners receives a mild blow, and retaliates with great force. Another variation was the ‘slow burn’, whereby the story is apparently proceeding slowly, and then the punchline hits you unexpectedly. In many of the comedy pairings, one of the duo has some vague idea of ‘right and wrong’. However, with Absolutely Fabulous neither partner has this gift. Eddy, played by Jennifer Saunders has the Public Relations firm, with virtually no clients, and Patsy, played by Joanna Lumley, is so divorced from reality by her dependence on drink and drugs that she cannot quite remember the location of her office. In order to provide a balance, Eddy’s humourless, straitlaced daughter Saffron, played by Julia Sawalha acts as the conscience for both of them. John commented that the degree of popularity of the Double Act genre was such that Laurel and Hardy made 106 films! Members were very appreciative of John’s talk, and vowed to look at Double Act films from a different perspective in future.

Date of Next Meeting Tuesday 9th November 2021. For further details please contact our Secretary Gavin on (01323) 893760.

Cupani Garden

Opening so early in the season meant that visitors were just getting used to being out again and were so appreciative of the garden and the safety precautions we had in place. We then opened for NGS and Macmillan throughout June and July with the ever-changing summer blooms of sweet peas, geums, roses and agapanthus stealing the show. We had good weather for all our openings but in between, like everyone else, we have struggled with wind damage, and deluge to drought on the water front.

We took what we thought was a brave decision to open for NGS in April this year. We are often away in the winter but Covid had put an end to our winter/spring travels. Thankfully we had two fine days, if you remember we had no rain in April and the tulips were stunning, and while the garden is always quite flat in the Spring Ethronyums, Lathyrus Vernus, and Corydalis Porcelain Blue, Hamamelis, Alpines and tree blossom provided enough interest for visitors.

950 people have passed through our gates this season, either at plant sales or open gardens. We had fabulous Tripadvisor reviews and comments from visitors, which make opening so worthwhile. My favourite headings were ‘Eden via East Sussex’ and a ‘Horticultural Tardis’. We had our last private visit in August and then the season closed for visitors, but not for us as we are doing a big revamp of our long border. Our grand total raised for the various charities is over £10,000 (our best year ever). Over half of this sum came from plant sales and we want to give a big thank you to the very many Seaford residents who supported our sales. See you again in 2022. Aideen and Denis Jones

Seaford Little Theatre

BACK FOR CHRISTMAS!

They have been having a great time rehearsing a play with a very long title! Written by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr this this seasonal romp through The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of A Christmas Carol (phew!) has given everyone plenty of laughs and lots of fun. They can’t wait to share it all with our Seaford audiences. With a nod to The Play That Goes Wrong the Seaford show has singing, charades, and even a little bit of audience involvement for a few willing participants. Our thanks go to those who came along and supported the first post-lockdown production of Mixed Doubles. Now we are fully open again and ready to return to a

much greater degree of normality. So get ready to book your seats, which go on sale three weeks before the opening date of Friday 10th December. The show runs until Saturday 18th December with one matinée on Saturday 11th December – no evening performance that day. The play will begin at 7.45pm each day (no Sunday performance) – apart from the matinée which starts at 2.30pm. Tickets can be bought from Seaford Tourist Information or online: www.seafordlittletheatre.co.uk. We look forward to sharing some Christmas nonsense with you! Photo: the cast of the Christmas show (back row, l-r) Lee Coleman-Powney, Angie Wright, Tricia Pape, (front row l-r) Jenny Humphries and The Snowman, aka Debbie Cox.

Walnart gets a Twitter Boost from Theo Paphitis A Seaford based crafter has received a business boost from Retail Entrepreneur Theo Paphitis. Last week, Ginette McGee, owner of Walnart, tweeted Theo her business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by Theo to his near half a million Twitter followers. The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has over 3,000 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK. Business and retail entrepreneur and self-confessed Shopkeeper, Theo re-tweeted Ginette’s message to his almost 500,000 followers and as a result, Walnart has hundreds more followers and extra orders for their Walnart decorations and gifts. They are also profiled on

the #SBS website (www.theopaphitissbs.com) that is exclusive to all Small Business Sunday winners. Ginette said, ‘I’m completely blown away at being chosen as an #SBS winner, and the lovely messages I’ve received. I intend to make the most of the opportunities #SBS provides to grow my miniature business.’ Walnart is a collection of miniature decorations and gifts made using real walnut shells, and can be found at www.walnart.co.uk. Small business champion and Ryman Stationery, Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue Chairman, Theo Paphitis, said: ‘We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings. The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Walnart every success.’ Anyone looking for a re-tweet from Theo should tweet him about their business on Sunday between 5pm and 7.30pm and include the hashtag #SBS. Six lucky businesses are re-tweeted every Monday at 8pm and then invited to enter their profile on the new website, attend the annual #SBS networking event and take advantage of the networking opportunities. Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club This month the members have enjoyed an outing which was a run around the county ending up with tea and cakes in Burgess Hill. Our monthly social meeting was a talk by Janet Pennington on Shoes. This was a history of shoes, with slides, dating back to the 1400s when winklepickers were the shoe of the day. Rather more pointed than our 1960s version – our ancestors packed their point out with moss to keep the shape because they were so long! We were shown pictures of shoes throughout
