to the February issue of Seaford Scene. Well, this new year is well on its way. Thankfully the nights are slowly drawing out and signs of spring are all around – I have snowdrops and daffodils appearing in my garden, yay! If music be the food of love, play on...well, it certainly is in this issue with news from Seaford Sunshine Strummers, a local Ukelele group, on page 20, plus Seaford Sessions Folk Gigs on page 23, Seaford Music Society have a concert on 12th February (page 78) and the Corelli Ensemble’s spring concerts are listed on page 59 – and of course it’s Valentines Day on the 14th. If you’re tempted to get outdoors, then turn to Seaford Natural History Society’s article on page 45 for some inspiration, whilst Trees for Seaford have information on tree buds in spring (page 119). Greenhavens Network (page 72) offers some useful tips on looking after your ponds and the wildlife that inhabits them, and as always we have gardening advice on page 66 – A View from the Potting Shed. If you’re feeling energetic and want to enjoy some outdoor exercise, Seaford’s Half Marathon is coming up in April (page 117) and Seaford Striders’ Mince Pie 10 (page 107) may just give you that extra incentive! Don’t forget it’s Shrove Tuesday on the 21st and Ash Wednesday on 22nd. Enjoy your February! Front cover:

Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford in the next few weeks.

Cinema

Seaford Community Cinema is showing Bullet Train (15) at 7.30pm on Friday 3rd February at the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane. This action comedy thriller stars Brad Pitt as one of five assassins who board a fast-moving train only to discover that their missions have something in common. The end of the line is just the beginning of a film which should have you holding on to the edge of your sea with every twist and turn. It also stars Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon and Sandra Bullock. Next up, on Friday 10th February, is a completely different kind of comedy. In Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (PG), Lesley Manville plays a widowed cleaning lady who falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress and decides she must have one of her own. So desperate is her desire that she is prepared to gamble and go without food in order to fulfil her dream. Also starring are Isabelle Huppert and Lambert Wilson. At one time Bradford Movie Makers was a thriving group of people wanting to create their own films but membership is dwindling. The documentary A Bunch of Amateurs (12A), on Friday 24th February, charts their fight to keep going. The members play themselves in this film, which won Best Documentary at the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival. Next month’s films include Brian and Charles (PG) on 3rd March, Hit the Road (12A) on 10th March and Top Gun: Maverick (12A) on 24th March. Tickets from seafordcinema.org, the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street or on the door.

So expect some fun. Cushion the Blow, the genre challenging folk/country rock band return to Sutton Barn for a second gig on Friday 24th February, along with Popping the Cherry, local composer Phil Baker and a pub choir session, so come prepared to sing along. 7.30pm for 8pm start at Sutton Barn Community Club, Sutton Corner. BYOB. Tickets from: www.wegottickets. com/event/566908. The Corelli Ensemble is back at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road on Sunday 5th March at 4pm with Glorious Baroque, a programme featuring Maeve Jenkinson on the violin and Robert Duncan on the viola, playing music by Vivaldi, Pachelbel, Telemann and Bach. Tickets from Eventbrite.

Drama

Seaford Little Theatre is presenting Robert Thomas’ thriller Aurelia at the Little Theatre from Friday 3rd March until Saturday 11th March at 7.45pm (2.30pm matinée only on Saturday 4th March). Directed by Trish Richings, tickets are available from the TIC.

Folk

Seaford Sessions is hosting Solana, a five-piece band, at the Little Theatre, Steyne Road, on Saturday 18th March. Solana perform, original compositions, modal jazz and experimental grooves while respecting folk traditions, see page 23. These gigs are always a sell-out, so buy your tickets now from wegottickets or the TIC.

CHRISTMAS MAGIC BACK IN SEAFORD!

Seaford Town Council hosted this year’s Seaford Christmas Magic on Saturday 3rd December in Seaford Town and it was a roaring success.

Seeing the return of the street market stalls and entertainment stage back in the main streets of Seaford town, really kicked off Christmas in Seaford. Children were delighted to be invited to make beautiful ‘look to the stars’ lanterns in the Mercread Youth Centre with SCIP (Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers) ahead of the magical lantern parade. The parade saw children proudly marching their lanterns through the town centre, joined by the Earthquake Drummers, who lead the way to the top of Broad Street to meet the Mayor of Seaford and Seaford Rotary Father Christmas to start the countdown for switching on Seaford’s sparkling Christmas lights. A variety of live music captivated the visitors at Tansley’s Yard performance stage, hosted by Shannon Victoria with a mix of vocalists, musicians, and other contemporary performances throughout the day. Family entertainment was provided around the town with Seaford library hosting storytime sessions for the children. Life Church had a family hub centre with free face painting and games for all. Seaford Youth Forum provided Christmas biscuits for decorating and St Leonard’s Church held their ‘Unplugged’ day with messy church and crafting activities, accompanied by an eclectic mix of music and song.

If the above wasn’t enough, Archway Choir also joined the festivities and performed Christmas carols in the lead up to the main Christmas light switch on. The day was topped off nicely with a screening of a familyfavourite film, Encanto, at Seaford Community Cinema.

In addition to the Christmas Magic event itself, Seaford Town Council and Seaford Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual window display competition for

all shops in Seaford town. This year the competition was judged by the Chamber of Commerce’s committee member Will Flowers and the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Olivia Honeyman. First prize was won by INLE on Clinton Place, and the two runners up were Cooper & Son funeral directors on Clinton Place, and Room Interiors on High Street. A huge thank you was extended to all who took part and helped inject some jolliness into the town centre.

It was a cold day, but it didn’t stop people turning out to support the event. Many of the shops and restaurants were busy all day with visitors. Cllr. Olivia Honeyman thanked everyone who was involved in the organisation of Christmas Magic: ‘It was lovely to see so many children in the lantern parade and to help Santa turn Seaford’s Christmas lights on at the end of the day, fabulous community event.’

On behalf of the town, the Town Council wishes to thank all those who came and supported this community event and made Christmas Magic so festive. Special thanks go to the volunteers of the Seaford Christmas Magic Committee, Sussex Events, Shannon Victoria for hosting the live entertainment stage, Seaford Bonfire Society for marshalling, SCIP for lantern making, Seaford library for storytime, Life Church for the family hub, Seaford Rotary for Father Christmas and his sleigh, Seahaven FM for broadcasting the event throughout the day, St Leonards for the ‘unplugged’ celebrations, the Mayor of Seaford and Father Christmas for the Christmas lights switch on, Archway Choir for the Christmas carols, Seaford Town Council staff, and all the stallholders who made the day possible.

Seaford Town Council

FIRST ECO-FRIENDLY RECYCLED BENCH & NEW SEAFRONT TELESCOPE

Recent donations of a 100% recycled plastic bench and a new telescope have been installed in Seaford town in fitting memorial tributes.

Seaford Town Council has recently added its first environmentally friendly recycled plastic bench, donated by a local resident as a memorial within the Crouch Gardens. The new eco-friendly bench is made from 100% recycled plastic – which would otherwise have ended up in landfill – and should last much longer than a traditional timber bench, with little maintenance needed. This is something the Town Council has been considering for some time in an effort to continue to offer improved facilities within the town, whilst considering the effects on the environment.

The recent installation was donated by local resident, Alan Chisholm, in memory of his late wife Yvonne, overlooking their home shared together for 32 years, making it a perfect addition to the peaceful gardens. Mr Chisholm said ‘It would be impossible to find a more apt and lovable spot, overlooking our old house in East Street which holds a lot of memories. Yvonne and I bought the house from my mother when we first married, almost 50 years ago. We met after I had carried out my National Service and married soon after. Yvonne was a keen dancer and attended Jean Cantell’s Dance School in Newhaven. She won many gold medals for competitions, and I proposed to her at the Galleon Bar beneath the Regency Dance Hall in Brighton, where she was also runner up in a Miss Brighton beauty Competition in 1960. We had a son Darren and grandson, Jake, who she adored. This bench is a wonderful tribute for Yvonne, and I can even see her old bedroom window from it.’

Seaford Town Council plans to install more recycled plastic items in the future, to reduce costs as well as help the environment. The next sponsorship project will be

to add some colourful seating to the outside of the new tennis courts at The Salts Recreation ground, providing a fantastic viewpoint for the huge variety of sports and activities that take place onsite.

In addition to the new bench, if you have walked along Seaford’s promenade recently, you may have noticed there has also been a very impressive new telescope installed near the Martello beach huts. This is another recent and very welcome addition to Seaford’s modest promenade. The telescope has already seen much use by passers-by and visiting families. This donation was made in tribute to a young man who loved watching the ferries go by.

Donor representative, Liz Woolger says, ‘Wayne Littlechild and Alex Woolger were best pals for over thirty years. Wayne sadly died aged 41 in 2022. He had lived his life to the full, running races for charity and travelling the world, raising money and enjoying life. Their great pleasure was to visit Seaford, and walk the Seven Sisters and the Promenade, watching the Newhaven Ferry. Wayne always said, ‘I wish I had remembered my binoculars.’ He felt that one day their visits could be celebrated on a plaque at Splash Point. The provision of the Telescope by Alex celebrates their visits, their friendship and Wayne’s life. Now others can enjoy the view without their binoculars!’

Seaford Town Council thanks the donors for both of these welcome new additions to the town and hopes they will be enjoyed for many years by locals and visitors to the town.

SEAFORD ROTARY Associate Membership

Seaford Rotary is pleased to announce a new way in which adults can experience being a Rotarian at a modest cost. A new ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP scheme was launched on 1st January 2023 by which a person can join Seaford Rotary for one year as an associate member for a one-off fee of only £25. During that year the member will learn how Seaford Rotary is organised and run, and be able to be involved with our projects, committees, fund-raising events and social occasions. Associate members can attend any of our meetings. At lunchtime meetings we enjoy an excellent meal for £14. The only limitation is that an associate member is unable to be a formal officer, such as a committee chair, or to vote on key decisions, but of course any feedback would be most welcome. Every associate member will be assigned a full member as a mentor and will be asked to help with two committees during the year.

At the end of the 12 months, we would hope that the associate member would become a full member of Seaford Rotary, having experienced all the fun, friendship, and the service provided to our local community. The £25 associate member joining fee will be deducted from the full member one-off joining fee (currently £50). Should the associate member realise that Rotary is not for them, they have the option of simply leaving Seaford Rotary or signing up as one of our many Friends and Volunteers (zero cost) who we may call upon to help us with our events, for example with the Christmas sleigh collections. As you would expect, Seaford Rotary has the right to terminate any membership for valid reasons.

One lady has already joined as an associate member. We hope for many more. This scheme is an excellent way to find out if Rotary is for you. You will be provided with an invaluable insight as to what we do and how we do it. If you are interested, please contact us via email at contact@seafordrotary.org.uk or via our website at www.seafordrotary.org.uk and click on the Join Us link on the home page. Please indicate that you are interested in Associate or Full Membership, and we will contact you.

Santa’s Sleigh

Members of Seaford Rotary were delighted that Santa visited Seaford in December.

Before he arrived, there was much discussion behind the scenes as to how his collection visits could be more efficient, and this resulted in changes to some of the routes that he followed, including the introduction of the Seaford Grange development at the old Newlands School site.

This year we had help from many Volunteers and Friends, for which we are extremely grateful. Our thanks to them all for their enthusiastic participation as they filled 119 (81.5%) of the 146 collecting slots. We look forward to working with them again in 2023. Several have already confirmed their intention to help in 2023. We also had three new lady Rotarian Team Leaders who conducted the collections on six evenings. Despite the financial constraints of high energy costs plus inflation, we are astounded at the generosity of the people of Seaford, such that the collections have raised £12,706 for the Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust, which will be used to support both local charitable and international Rotary projects.

All at Seaford Rotary would once again like to thank everyone who has given most generously this December, whether it be their time helping with the collections, or their donations.

Seaford Rotary welcomes new associate or full members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information, please email contact@ seafordrotary.org.uk or contact us at www. seafordrotary.org.uk.

SEAFORD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

In recent years Seaford Photographic Society has been getting something of a reputation for the high quality of its nature and wildlife photography, so we were all very much looking forward to the annual Nature Print competition. We were pleased to welcome Mike Warren ARPS from Steyning Camera Club for the evening to assess the 27 entries. Mike had judged several nature competitions at other clubs in recent weeks, and he commented that our images were by far the highest standard.

The winning print, ‘Brown Bear Eating Salmon’, (photo left) was taken by new member Sandra Mitchell on her recent trip to Alaska. Second place went to Simon Watkins for his ‘Squabbling Terns’ (photo below) and Anna-Marie Armstrong took third place with ‘Red Squirrel’ photo below).

The following week we had an informal competition for photos

taken just with a mobile phone or tablet. The quality of images you can get from these has been increasing dramatically in recent years, and it gave members a chance to put into practice what they had learned from the talk on this subject that we had back in September. There were 29 entries, and our deputy chairman Adrian commented on them and chose his favourites. The winner was ‘Into

and Trevor Jones’ photo, Belle Tout (photo below). They demonstrated that you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune on equipment if you have a good eye for a photo.

In a change to the programme, our last meeting before Christmas

the Storm’ by Colin Mitchell, with 2nd and 3rd places going to Anna-Marie Armstrong with her photo ‘Baby and Me’ (photo below)

was a chance to do a bit of socialising and all get to know each other

a bit better. We were also pleased to welcome new member Adele for the first time. We all had a bit of a chat about photography, with drinks from the bar, mince pies, and Anna’s famous home-made chocolate brownies. The club secretary did a demonstration of mount cutting, an important part of presenting your prints, and one of our members brought along his laptop to demonstrate its use with a graphics tablet instead of using a mouse or trackpad. This turned out to be a very enjoyable evening with a good turnout, though one or two people couldn’t make it because of the traffic problems on the A259 – not for the first time. A great end to 2022 though and our chairman wished everybody a Happy Christmas and New Year.

We meet in person at Seaford’s Con Club on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. Every other Friday we get together on-line only, via Zoom. Larger version of all the above images, can be seen on our website www.seafordps.org, and on our Facebook page.

UNO23 TWO: A Selection of Art, Craft & Design for Romantics

Tuesday 31st January – Saturday 25th February

Gallery Uno, 14A High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG

OPEN: Tues – Sat 10am – 4pm, Mondays 12pm –3pm Closed Sundays

February: The month derived from the Latin word februa (to cleanse) and the one in which we celebrate Valentine’s Day. At Gallery Uno our next exhibition will indeed be one for the romantics, and those of you looking for a fresh start to the year. Two new painters joining the gallery, Penelope Oakley and Gary Long, are doing exactly that, and hope that you will be moved and captivated by their work.

This month’s featured exhibitor, David St. Maur Sheil, you can say is truly ‘local’. Not only living in Seaford but the very earth on which the town stands forms the basis for his extraordinary pieces of artwork.

David St Maur Sheil: Painter in Natural Pigments

Born in Germany David’s family were always travelling and living in different countries around the world. Through his experiences roving the world as a child, David developed his love and awareness of the planet and its fragility.

In the 1990s, a growing concern for a viable agriculture industry led him to train as an organic farmer. Subsequently, he became a partner in an organic farm living in Hong Kong and Taiwan for over thirty years, working with investors, corporations, non-profiteers and farmers throughout South East Asia on issues to do with sustainability.

David has been painting all through his life and has had a particular love for oil painting, working with an expressionistic colour palette verging on the wildness of Fauvism. He studied art at the Metropolitan College Brighton, but is largely self-taught. Having settled in

Sussex he started to draw and paint more seriously, experimenting with natural handmade pigments made from soils around him. To David art has become another language in which he can highlight matters concerning our connections with our environment, particularly the precariousness of local and global soils.

Since switching his medium to handground earth colours around three years ago, he has come to embrace the limited range of earthy colours and textures. Within the dominant browns most commonly found in the soil he has found infinite subtle variations. Commercial colours tend to be ground to a uniform fineness, whereas making his own paints enables David to vary the texture of the paints by grinding his colours to different grades; everything from fine watercolours and washes to thick gritty impasto textures. He regularly sketches outdoors with charcoal and crayon on long walks and hikes, with an eye out for interesting and unusual coloured soils. Back home the collected soils are washed, ground and stored in recycled glass jars. They are then mixed with natural mediums such as tree resin in the final process turning soils into paints. The paintings are, therefore, only one stage in a long creative process.

As far as possible David will use soils derived from the view he is painting, enabling a direct and intimate connection between the painting and the landscape. In fact it could be said that within a painting of the South Downs there is actually the South Downs, or at least a part of it, and the colours are the natural colours found there.

Seaford Sunshine Strummers A BIG THANK YOU FOR 2022

My name is Patrick. Having been an active participant in Seaford’s seafront performances by the Seaford Sunshine Strummers ukulele group for the past four years, I would love to express my pure enjoyment of being a part of such an extraordinary bunch of talented musicians, who take great delight in entertaining our enthusiastic audiences.

Apart from collecting for charity, we derive great pleasure from providing another facility for Seaford’s residents and visitors alike. The feedback we received has been mind blowing – we have also even been live screened to a village in Spain, videos have been sent all over the world, and we have become a local amenity.

Now established as one of Seaford’s attractions, what started out as a group of strangers wishing to learn how to play the Ukulele together, has now grown into local musicians wanting to gig and share our enjoyment. So from humble beginnings seven years ago with just eight strangers wishing to play and sing, it has become a group 30+ friends. We have developed a regular audience of families, singers, dancers, and thankfully sponsors. It always astounds us just how generous our followers are.

As you may have seen, we have raised an astonishing amount for this year’s charity. £3,320 was raised from collections at the beach, but also at local care and residential homes, along with private parties.

I would like to thank our local residents and visitors to our fair town for supporting us in raising this total for our chosen charity for the past 18 months – the 1st Responders. They will benefit by buying New equipment and helping expand training locally. This figure has now become a Target to aim for each year.

The group had to cancel so many of the 53 planned shows during the past 18 months at various care and residential homes due to the COVID restrictions and the nervousness of returning to normal. Earlier in the year the group put on a sellout show at the Little Theatre for one night only. All ticket sales and donations went to the theatre, raising £800 to help support one of Seaford’s key venues.

The Strummers, as we refer to ourselves, meet every Friday at a shelter at the top of the causeway (weather permitting) usually starting around Easter, between 2pm and 4pm and continuing until the weather turns. You may catch us on a Friday during the winter months at The Barn on Seaford Head – perhaps enjoy a coffee and cake whilst you are there. We are regularly joined by very talented local musicians, bringing more variety to our performances.

With 2023 now upon us, we can’t wait to return to playing more within our local community at the various types of homes and clubs in and around Seaford and begin to raise money for this year’s local charity. All we charge is a cup of tea and the possibility of a piece of cake and a good chat. If any clubs, care/residential homes or any other interested parties who would like us to entertain them, please contact Alan via email: alanGsmith412@gmail.com.

Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Five-piece band Solana will be performing original compositions, encompassing folk idioms, modal jazz and experimental grooves, when they take to the Seaford Little Theatre stage on Saturday 18th March at 7.30pm. This gig follows the super-successful appearance of Seaford- and Sussex-based Contraband.

Folk Radio UK said of Solana: ‘They make my spice shelf look boring.’ Why? Because their rich and inventive sonic tapestry is anchored by a deep respect for traditions rooted in all corners of Europe and beyond.

Formed in 2012 in Valencia, Spain, they have since found a niche in the UK’s contemporary folk scene. They are renowned for a soaring originality that transcends the boundaries of any one style, taking their music towards something new and bold beyond classic folk conventions. With almost nine years of extensive

touring behind them, they have established their reputation as formidable live performers and have become firm favourites across a range of arts centres and festival programmes.

Their Balkan, flamenco, neofolk and world music is led by flute, fiddle, accordion and Spanish guitar. Their obsession with interesting grooves and modes creates a fusion that sometimes makes you want to dance, can be reflective or even heavy, resulting in bold music that goes beyond folk conventions. In the words of Songlines they are ‘thoroughly invigorating.’

Introducing the group is Seaford Sessions, a non-profit community organisation which brings live acoustic music to the town, featuring the best in folk, roots and Americana. Tickets, which sell like hot cakes, are available from wegottickets and from Seaford Tourist Information Centre in Church Street.

Many of you will know that David Campbell, one of the founders of Seaford Sessions, died unexpectedly in October. He is very much missed, not only by the Sessions team but by the town as a whole. As well as playing several instruments, he was a scientist and also was a key mover with Seaford Community Cinema which he co-founded. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

REIMAGINING OF OUR CHURCHES TO BETTER SERVE OUR COMMUNITY

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) as trustees of the Parish of Sutton with Seaford have recently applied for planning consent to redevelop the site of the old parish hall on Church Lane so that it can be offered for sale with permission granted. We feel it would be useful to explain our situation in the Parish and why we have decided to do this.

The parish hall was closed at the start of COVID as were all our buildings of course. The hall was already in need of significant maintenance, and it deteriorated rapidly. When in use it was losing a substantial sum every year as hiring it out never came close to covering the cost of running it.

The overall parish finances are in a difficult position. Our Church income comes mainly from the 300 or so people on our church electoral roll. This is then used to maintain our two Church buildings, and to fund our two vicars, our outreach in the parish with a youth worker, as well as pastoral care. We simply rely on the generosity of the members of our congregation, fund-raising and a few kind legacies from time to time. With fewer people on the electoral roll and increasing expenses, the parish is losing money every year, and the PCC as trustees are duty bound to do something about it as we will run out of money in about three years’ time.

The PCC has therefore decided to reimagine the use of all our buildings and consolidate what we have. We have two churches, St Luke’s on Walmer Road and St Leonard’s in the centre of our town, as well as the old parish hall.

Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. All rights are reserved over the content and design of Seaford Scene unless agreed otherwise. The opinions expressed in editorial matter are not necessarily those of the publisher. Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of entries. Seaford Scene cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage caused by errors, omissions or alterations, and assumes no risk or liability for articles or adverts or the accuracy of the facts within them that are provided by contributors. Seaford Scene does not endorse companies, products, services or religious or political organisations that appear in this magazine.

St Luke’s is a relatively modern building, well insulated and easily heated, so ideally suited to hiring out as well as being an intimate space for worship. We have moved the parish office to St Luke’s from the old hall as our administrative centre as well as focusing all of our hiring there.

The planning application for the old hall proposes that the part that was originally a Victorian house is returned to its original use as two town houses, and that the flat roofed area alongside is replaced with another town house, these are all very much in keeping with most of the other buildings on Church Lane. The PCC are duty bound as trustees to realise the maximum value on sale and selling with permission granted is the best way to do this. The monies from this sale will then pay for the proposed work in St Leonards Church.

St Leonard’s is the oldest building in Seaford. It is a beautiful ancient space for worship. It is a grade 1 listed building, so the cost of maintenance is huge. As part of reimagining its use we want it not only to be a centre of faith but also be at the heart of our town, serving the community by upgrading its facilities making it more attractive for all to use. This is where the sale of the hall comes in to raise funds to do just that, we want to create proper, safe, accessible toilet facilities, a kitchen area and a smaller meeting space in the side chapel that can easily be heated.

We hope in time with this refurbishment to serve the community more effectively and to become sustainable financially. Fred Bass, Churchwarden.

SEAFORD YOUNG MAYOR’S ROARING SUCCESS AT CHRISTMAS MAGIC!

The Young Mayor of Seaford; Erin Franklin was delighted to be part of the Seaford Christmas Magic celebrations on 3rd December 2022. Wrapping up warm and manning her stall on the high street, Erin offered a treasure trove of beautifully handcrafted eco-friendly Christmas gifts.

Erin has been working closely with Plastic Free Seaford and Seaford Environment Alliance since the start of her young mayoral term, campaigning against the use of single-use plastic within the town and working towards the launch of her Coffee Cup Initiative ‘Keep Up Bring Your Cup’.

All items on Erin’s stall were handcrafted locally by elves (Erin, her family and friends of Seaford Environment

Alliance). Items included varying sizes of Christmas trees and origami stars, driftwood (from Seaford beach) keyrings (small size) and large shed keyrings, necklaces with pendants made from crisp packets, some pine cone tree decorations, paper mâché bowls, and soaps. Erin was extremely thankful to Seaford Rotary Club who kindly donated a contactless SumUp card machine, allowing Erin to make use of digital payments on the day.

Erin also ran a competition to win a £20 Inle Home gift card, where participants had to guess the number of plastic pieces in the jar (56 in total). We are pleased to announce that a winner with the closest guess has been contacted to receive their prize.

If you can’t get to the drop off points please call: 07765 903165 –Sewing Machinists also wanted!

A total amount of £416.61 was raised, which will be split equally between her two chosen charities, Plastic Free Seaford and Seaford Environmental Alliance. Erin said of the day: “I would like to thank everyone who donated and/or bought from our store at Seaford Christmas Magic. We managed to raise £416.61, which will be evenly split and donated to Plastic Free Seaford and Seaford Environmental Alliance. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Seaford Town Council, PFS and SEA for all the support they have given me and look forward to launching my Coffee Cup Initiative ‘Keep Up Bring Your Cup.’

Erin’s ‘Keep Up Bring Your Cup’ campaign will be launched in the new year, to tackle the waste produced by disposable coffee cups. Information will be published on the Seaford Town Council website at www. seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk.

Seaford Little Theatre SEASON’S GREETINGS

Who’d want to spend Christmas with a family that doesn’t let the kids open their big presents until Boxing Day? Well, it seems that seven friends and relatives plus assorted unseen and unheard children were more than happy to descend on Neville (Alan Lade) and Belinda (Marilynne Sharpin) for the festivities.

Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy is about the Everyman of dysfunctional families as they bicker, get drunk and generally behave on top and bottom of their form over the festivities. Do we recognise ourselves and our own family Christmases as the play unfolds? Well, there is always a disturbing shade of darkness in an Ayckbourn comedy.

Gary Fowler and Clare Penfold directed at brisk pace, using Lade’s deceptively simple set adroitly as the action takes place simultaneously in three locations. That they achieved clarity is to the credit of them and their well-rehearsed and word-perfect cast.

The fact that this play’s fun hides much pathos and everyday personal misery suffered by some of its characters was seen rather than told, a difficult act to portray, but done effectively by Bernard (Lee Coleman-Powney), who insists on inflicting his puppet show on the kids only to prove his ineffectuality to himself as well as others, and by Kim Sanger White as the disillusioned Rachel, destined never to get what she wants in life and resigned to it.

Neville – a great performance from Lade – is so laid back that he fails to see the frustration of Belinda trapped with a man who would rather spend time in his shed with his power tools or mending broken toys in the dining room.

Sharpin is a firebrand, both in temper and raciness, as she encourages Rachel’s man friend and novelist Clive’s (Gary Fowler) Christmas night seduction under the tree, dismantling carefully ordered presents

as they start to give vent to their passion.

Fowler’s is the pivotal role in the story, his presence as the outsider making at least some of the characters see themselves as they are.

Angie Wright is always a powerhouse of fun, and she excelled as Neville’s sister Phyllis, to whom Bernard is devoted, clowning and oblivious to the mayhem she causes.

Then there was everyone’s favourite uncle – not – played stridently by Dug Godfrey in combats and toting stiletto and gun – a great part, amusingly played.

Last but not least there were Neville’s friend the incompetent Eddie, spiritedly played by Peter Barnes, and his heavily pregnant wife Pattie, portrayed by the endearing Debbie Cox, whose trials as Bernard’s puppeteer assistant brought tears to the eyes. Nurture this woman Little Theatre. She is very entertaining.

This was a great team effort by a talented cast, who conveyed their enjoyment of the play with great enthusiasm and made sure we enjoyed it too.

Roll on the next production, Aurelia, by Robert Thomas, from 3rd to 11th March, and look forward to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and another Ayckbourn, A Chorus of Disapproval, later in the year.

Seaford u3a News

Difficult to believe that this year is already speeding by! Advertising the latest coffee morning brings that home. February’s coffee morning will take place on Wednesday 15th from 10am to noon at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. With no charges for entry or refreshments, this is open to members and anyone who is interested in joining u3a. These coffee mornings have proved to be a good introduction to Seaford u3a and non-members have the opportunity to meet members and committee members to talk about the u3a’s range of activities.

After a prolonged absence from Seaford u3a’s social calendar because of COVID restrictions and precautions, the Tea Parties started again before Christmas with two history talks, the first on Mussolini and the second entitled Bad King John. They continue in February with Kevin Gordon, a popular local speaker, talking about His Grandmother’s Photographs. In March there will be a talk on Piltdown Man, which is local to Sussex if not to Seaford, and then in April another talk with a local flavour on Seaford Museum. Events last year proved that members are particularly interested in local issues, with a record turnout at the AGM coming to hear a speaker on Seaford’s former House on the Cliff. The Tea Parties enable members to spend a relaxed afternoon first listening to a talk and then partaking of tea, sandwiches and cake. There is a small charge.

There are several new Groups which have started since Christmas which cover a range of interests. The Group entitled Ancient Egyptian Art and Craft gives a new approach to the numbers of Ancient Egyptian offerings

which surfaced in 2022 to commemorate the finding of Tutankhamun’s tomb. One of the u3a’s most inspiring leaders runs a Group entitled Masterpieces in British Collection, which explores lesser known collections in provincial Art Galleries, starting with an exhibition at Chichester. There is a new Current Affairs Group, What’s the News?, always a popular subject with members, and a new Group on Islamic Art, which has run before and is now back with new information by popular demand, starting in May. Another new Group of hands-on Arts and Crafts has grown out of one of the well-loved Art Groups. New Groups start often and help to spread the u3a Year beyond the traditional dates. Some old favourite Groups such as Canasta, Bridge, Scrabble and Mah Jong will continue.

Some members took part in an interesting visit to the Brighton Old Police Cells Museum, which is in the basement of the old Town Hall. The building stopped being used as Brighton Borough Police Station in 1965, but the warren of rooms and cells dating from its opening in 1830 can still be seen. There was an amazing collection of historic police batons and other police memorabilia to be seen, even including a blue Police phone box, which Doctor Who would have found familiar. Famous police events were dealt with from this building, notably the Grand Hotel Brighton bombing in 1984 which was an attempt to kill the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher but succeeded in killing five others and wounding another 31 persons. The Mods and Rockers of the 1960s also left their mark on this building – some 70 of them were locked in the cells, resulting in graffiti which can still be seen.

For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack.

Seaford Natural History Society A BOTANICAL JOURNEY WITH LEIF BERSWEDEN

The UK is full of remarkable plants. There are those that poison predators, others that fight battles and yet more that play mind games with pollinators. We have carnivores and climbers, puppeteers and parasites, beauties and beasts. A few are giants thousands of years old, while others are tiny pinpricks a millimetre across. Botanist Leif Bersweden is intrigued by them all.

In the summer that he left school, Leif set out to fulfil a childhood dream – to find every species of orchid native to the British Isles in just one summer. He did so...and then wrote a book about it! (The Orchid Hunter). As the book demonstrates, that quest required ingenuity, stamina and a large dose of luck.

Not content with that, four years later, in 2021, Leif went on a big botanical adventure around Britain and Ireland, travelling from Hampshire’s Bluebell woods to the shores of Shetland, to track down our most intriguing and well-known plants. His latest book, Where the Wildflowers Grow, follows him on that journey, meeting our plants, telling their stories and exploring people’s connection to their local flora. The book is a passionate call to arms to save our remaining flora before it is lost. Leif’s story is an urgent one that echoes the growing environmental concerns of today.

On The Verge and the Seaford Natural History Society are joining forces to bring this outstanding young plant hunter to Seaford. Although still under 30, Leif has not only found time to write two books and tour the UK searching for his beloved plants (mindful of the climate crisis he travels by bike!) but also to complete a BSc at Oxford and a PhD at Kew Gardens. He will be here in Seaford to talk about the incredible diversity of plants and their importance for our climate.

The talk will be at Seaford Baptist Church on Saturday 25th February at 2.30pm. Tickets are now available from www.eventbrite.co.uk (search for Leif Seaford). Further details from www. Renaturingseaford; the Seaford Natural History Society website; the On The Verge website; or from me, Mike Vingoe at snhs.vingoe@gmail.com).

Mercread Youth Centre WE NEED COMMUNITY!

As we make plans for 2023, Mercread Youth Centre is looking to the community of Seaford to enhance the vital youth services we provide. As our new youth sessions are underway and our youth workers are connecting with young people, Mercread Youth Centre is looking to create new opportunities within the local community. We will be starting a new project called Community Rewards, led and developed by one of our senior youth workers, Jason ‘where young people attend community sessions to understand more about their immediate community and further afield. This will guide and support them in becoming positive members of their own community, by understanding a wider range of subjects that make up their world’. The young people will collect stamps to then collect a reward from local businesses.

These sessions will connect community to the young person, and we are looking for businesses/organisations that will engage with this scheme and offer a reward the young person may or may not normally be able to afford, or give them the chance to try something new. We already have a few local businesses involved, but would love to engage more. This in turn then creates opportunities for future work, including careers events, work placements and inspiring new interests in the young people. Any businesses or organisations that wish to get involved, or anyone requiring further information, please email centremanager@mercread.com

WANT TO EARN EXTRA MONEY?

Reliable distributor required to deliver Seaford Scene magazine, door-to-door in Seaford.

You must be sufficiently fit, have a car and be available to distribute during the last six working days of every month.

Please email: fran@seafordscene.co.uk or phone 01273 710793

We are also going to create a pool of volunteers from all backgrounds who would like to be part of our community events, youth sessions or generally help at the centre. We would love to hear from the BAME community, LBGTQ+ and those who are differently abled as Mercread wants to represent the diversity in Seaford and the value it holds in decision making within the community.

So if you have a passion for young people, and can see the value they hold and wish to advocate for them in our community, please get in touch. Full training and support will be given and the chance to make a difference in a young person’s life can be achieved.

We also would love anyone with experience in working with young people to join our committee and help us make decisions that benefit the youth centre and thus the local community. We meet monthly and welcome new people who are passionate about young people and their futures.

Mercread Youth Centre is a fantastic space in the heart of Seaford Town adjacent to the crouch gardens, and our vision is to see the centre open daily to provide for the young people of Seaford. It would be great to see the community of Seaford engage with us and help to create a bright future that the young people can be proud of. Community is the heart of this, with engagement from businesses, organisations and community groups, Mercread can offer a space for young people to thrive and open their world to the wealth of opportunities out there.

As an old African proverb says ‘It takes a village to raise a child’. This requires an environment where a community comes together to support and guide young people and to provide a safe space where young people can flourish and grow.

Mercread Youth Centre would love you to join us.

The Southern Stomp Linedancers raised a final total of £682 to buy Christmas foodstuffs and treats for the Seahaven Community Food project. We presented all our purchases to Stef Lake from the organisation, knowing that it would be put to good use for members of our local communities, at the Community Supermarkets and in the Christmas food parcels delivered across the area.

It was fabulous to hear from Stef the impact and benefit others would have as a result of the generosity of the dancers, a magnificent effort from the sale of the Kit Kats and individual donations! This year the felt decorations made by Joy were a selection of cats; complete with gardening, D.I.Y. fishing, hairdressing, Christmas toys and cookery charms, all were sold for a £5 donation and all on the first day of sale! A big Thank You to all the Southern Stomp Line Dancers that made a donation to this very worthy cause!

SEAFORD STAMP & POST CARD CLUB

Well the weather is pretty rough as I write, but at least a dozen hardy souls were able to get to the January meeting – the bar was busy at the Con Club! We were treated to a wonderful display on railway postal history from Tony Hope’s collection, ably given in his absence by David Manthorpe – thanks David. Thanks too to the Con Club staff, especially for their wonderful Christmas dinner, enjoyed by all present. Just a word of appreciation

to our member who couldn’t make it on the night, but was happy to donate her payment to Club funds.

In February we welcome back an old friend and active Committee member Maurice Shorten, who 15 years ago secured us a National Lottery fund grant as Secretary, which was put to good use for our display boards, much admired by visiting speakers from other clubs. He also was a key member in our 60th Anniversary celebrations in 2008.

Maurice’s display might remind us that postal disputes are not a recent event; there was a national postal strike in 1971, which went on for over seven weeks, spawning many pirate private postal services. As the strike bridged the date of switching to decimal currency on 15th February 1971, this caused huge problems in issues of normal Post Office stamps.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Seaford Con Club. There is good parking and a bar, light refreshments are available. You’re welcome to visit our website: http:// www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sspc or contact the club secretary on 01323 492433 or at: david.manthorpe10@ gmail.com.

Sussex Wildlife Trust BRIMSTONE

It’s around about now that I start getting a bit bored of winter. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a bit of bleak beauty: bare trees, frosted landscapes and all that. But now I need something to get my heart racing. Send me a sign – some life in the graveyard of winter, a promise of those dynamic spring months ahead, a flash of colour. In February, my light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming butterfly.

On sculpted, vibrant yellow wings the Brimstone makes his elegant entrance into the New Year on those bright February days when you feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Its distinctive yellow wings have given birth to a legend – that this ‘butter-coloured fly’ inspired the word butterfly. This claim may not entirely be true. Also untrue is the notion that these February Brimstones are the first signs of the year’s new life. Because by the time Brimstones appear in February they are already on their last (six) legs.

Fresh Brimstone butterflies emerged from their chrysalises in late summer, so by February they could be seven months old – and in butterfly years that’s ancient. Admittedly almost all of that time they’ve been asleep in a hedge, sheltered from the storms under Holly and Ivy. Yet despite the worst winter weather they always emerge immaculate in the spring. They must be made of Teflon.

When they awake the (bright yellow) males search for a mate, they mate, the (pale yellow) females lay eggs and then both die. Still, an adult life of over ten months earns them the title of our longest-lived butterfly. An insect OAP.

l We supply a large bulk bag to your door for a one-off payment of £4.99.

l When you have filled it with your garden green waste, phone us and we will collect and recycle it for just £17.50.

l No more struggling to take your green waste to the tip and then cleaning your car afterwards.

l Let us do the hard work.

l Practical and easy with weekly collections. Call Jason

The Brimstone’s caterpillars feed on the leaves of Buckthorn and Alder Buckthorn, unobtrusive shrubs which, like the butterfly, are widespread across Sussex. When I first became the proud owner of a garden it was only a matter of days before I evicted the gnomes and planted an Alder Buckthorn. The following spring I was excited to watch a Brimstone laying her tiny skittle shaped eggs and I studied the caterpillars as they hungrily defoliated my tree. It’s funny, people often complain to me about caterpillars eating their plants – especially cabbages (the food of Small and Large White caterpillars). Why people are concerned is beyond me. Cabbages are horrible. The only reason I would ever plant a cabbage is for the pleasure of watching something else eat it.

The first Brimstone sighting in February doesn’t exactly mean that spring is starting but it’s certainly a sign that winter is starting to end. And right now that’s good enough for me. Either way, this yellow butterfly is a welcome messenger of what’s to come – the first sulphurous spark to ignite the blaze of spring.

BEAT THE

A VIEW FROM THE POTTING SHED

February was named by the Romans after an ancient festival of purification called Februa. In the Anglo Saxon calendar, February was Solmonath, the month of mud, or according to Bede (The Venerable Bede), the month of cakes. This latter may refer to the offering of cakes to the gods to make the fields fertile. In modern times we still celebrate the feast of St Valentine on 14th February, and Shrove Tuesday –Pancake Day (21st February in 2023). But the best thing about February is that it’s the last month of winter, with spring just around the corner, and a new year of gardening ahead of us.

HW ATTO DO JOBS FOR FEBRUARY

3 Sow seeds for peppers, chillies, aubergines in a propagator or trays on a sunny windowsill for a long growing season.

3 Chit early and second-early seed potatoes. Sit tubers, eyes uppermost, in an egg-box or seed-tray and keep indoors in good light, but out of direct sunlight. Plant out mid-March to April.

3 Prune deciduous hedging, dogwoods, wisteria, roses and late summer clematis.

3 Cut herbaceous perennials back to the base and mulch borders with well-rotted manure or compoSt

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD

The February Social Evening is on Tuesday 28th at 7pm at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road. Speaker Chris Stewart will give a talk on creatures found in the garden titled, ‘The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and the Beautiful.’ Plus a fun Competition –5 Hellebore Flower Heads Floating in Water.

CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE GARDEN

What will the weather be in 2023? Whatever your opinion on climate change, it cannot be denied that our gardens have experienced a variety of extreme weather conditions in the last 12 months. We have endured severe drought and searing high temperatures; remember the scorched grass? Floods renewed our lawns, plus we’ve had an explosion of weeds. Finally we had extreme cold, with record low temperatures. Weather extremes are becoming the norm say the scientists and according to provisional Meteorological Office figures 2022 was the warmest year on record for the UK, with predictions that it will get warmer.

The RHS has long been concerned about how climate change will affect gardens; it will change what gardeners can grow and how we need to grow it. They have carried out a great deal of climate and horticultural science research in recent years, and forward planning includes the re-siting of various collections from RHS Wisley in Surrey to RHS Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire, and RHS Bridgewater in Salford. A collection of rhubarb plants has in fact already been moved north to Bridgewater, as increasingly hotter temperatures had made it too dry and hot for them in the south. Some rhododendrons will also be moved to North Yorkshire, where cooler soil and a generally cooler climate will help them to thrive.

Nature is resilient, but there is no doubt that our gardens will have suffered from last year’s weather extremes, and there will be losses. Unfortunately symptoms of weather damage can take weeks or even months to show up in a plant, and new plants are more susceptible than established. Looks like we need to be consulting those RHS experts.

PROTECTING FROGS, PONDS AND AMPHIBIANS

Here in the UK, we have 14 native species of amphibian and reptiles, and it’s incredible that they thrive despite the English weather. Typically, they use a strategy called brumation, where they go into a state of dormancy over the winter months. They burrow into mud and log piles, and it’s vital to give them a haven where they can sleep through winter. Dead logs, stones, hibernacula, cracks and crevices all give amphibians a habitat to get through the winter months.

As January progresses, we have a last chance to manage our ponds – this is best undertaken between November and February. In February (depending on the weather) the frogs, toads and newts will return to the water to mate and lay eggs, so it is essential that we do not disturb them. This will be a vital source for amphibians in the months to come, so do get your pond ready to allow the amphibians to thrive.

Most ponds require a balance between open water and marginal, floating and submerged vegetation. Always keep to native pond weeds, as the pond is likely to get choked up by non-natives and we don’t want any part in spreading those around. It is recommended we avoid the New Zealand pygmy weed, parrot’s-feather, water fern and water hyacinth, and water primrose. These often choke up water bodies, block out light and reduce biodiversity, they cause havoc in natural spaces if

they escape from a garden on a bird’s foot or in waste. Vast sums of money and resources are spent trying to remove non-natives in waterways and nature reserves. Amphibians favour marginal/emergent plants such as yellow flag iris, water mint, spearwort, starwort and water forget-me-not. These will provide egg-laying sites for newts. Submerged or floating plants help oxygenate the water such as white and yellow waterlilies, curled pondweed and hornwort. They also provide places for dragonflies to lay eggs.

As a rule of thumb, one takes a quarter to a third of vegetation out on an annual or biannual basis. Leave the weed on the side of the pond for a couple of days in case there are any insects that want to crawl back into the water. Most weed can be later composted or if invasive, put in an old bin until it decomposes, then double bagged and binned or burnt.

Remember to create or reinstate nooks, mini caves and hiding places in your pond, and a log or stones to allow safe exit from the pond should any mammal slip in by accident.

This will create a perfect habitat for amphibians and help increase the biodiversity in your garden. It’s a real joy for children and adults alike to watch the frogs emerge from eggs and grow. Also, having a pond in your garden however big or small helps all kinds of wildlife in your garden and really increases critical insect population, and provides water for animals in the hot summer months. Even a small pond (mine is in a small plastic bin!) can have a huge effect on biodiversity and, as frogs like to eat snails and slugs, it has huge benefits for the rest of your garden.

Greenhavens held Froglife events last summer, and the children and adults alike thoroughly enjoyed learning everything amphibian and enjoyed the pond dipping that finished off the day. We will be holding more of these events this year, so if you want a fun day out with the family, please email me your details at contact@ greenhavens.network to be added to the mailing list. We are looking forward to bringing the local community some great educational and fun events. I hope to see you join us.

SPRING BRINGS PROMISE OF WARMER DAYS AND YOUR GARDEN IN BLOOM

But what about your lawn? Like all your plants, the grass in your lawn needs some TLC to help look its best and keep it healthy in the months ahead.

GreenThumb first put down roots in 1986 and has now grown to 220 UK branches. The branches are run by and employ people that live in the area in which they work – so, a local service with a national reputation.

We offer a range of treatments to help improve your lawn’s density, colour and overall health, including fertilising, weed and moss control, pest and disease control, aeration, scarification and more. And if your lawn has become a patchwork of weed, moss and coarse grasses, we can give you a brand new lawn for a total fresh start.

With a range of direct debit plans to suit all budgets, it often works out cheaper than DIY. Whether you want a pleasant place to sit on a summer’s day or a hardy lawn for the kids to run around on, we can help.

TOP TIPS FOR SPRING

• Clear the lawn of debris, raking gently so as not to damage the grass

• Aerate the soil to allow water, air and nutrients into the root zone, because stronger roots create a stronger lawn

• As the weather warms up, scarify to remove the thatch and moss, creating space for new grass

• Keep mower blades clean and sharp, and cut on the highest setting until we are safely past the last frosts

• Keep an eye out now for damage caused by leather jackets – look for thin or bare areas developing and spreading

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB

At our meeting this month on 16th February we are looking forward to welcoming Michelle King who will be demonstrating Tour de France. Michelle has visited us in the past and is a very popular and entertaining guest, who always produces beautiful work. We know that we will all be in for a real treat. Following along the French theme, our competition is entitled Très Chic.

In December we had a slight change of programme in that members were asked to bring in material and mechanics to make a Christmas table decoration of their choice, having been given some guidance by experienced club members. It was great to see the variety of designs and compositions our members produced. A very sociable afternoon was enjoyed by everyone with tea and Christmas cake. Our competition was entitled A Christmas Carol, and once again, our members did not hold back in letting their imaginations run riot. Some beautiful designs were produced and it was not difficult to guess the carol interpretations.

Looking ahead, on 16th March we have another demonstrator visiting us. Nina Tucknott, who is an experienced and accomplished designer will be demonstrating When Art Met Flowers.

We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for this year are £45 and visitors are always very welcome at £7.50 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details.

CONCENTUS SANG CHRISTMAS

Seaford was delighted to welcome Concentus back for their very popular Christmas Concert at Seaford Baptist Church after the years of ‘pandemic’ absence. And what a concert they heard – one to generate sustained enthusiastic applause at its end, and comments that it was ‘the best one ever’!

Concentus presented a very varied programme delivered with great skill to a most appreciative audience. The choir sang many emotions, switching mood seamlessly: the energy, exuberance, sparkle and excitement of Christmas

Carol Jamboree (arr. Andy Beck), Dance and Sing (traditional French/arr. R Murphy), A Merry Christmas (arr. A Warrell) and The Ragtime Carol (J Hewitt/M Bloor); and the holiness, reverence, heartfelt wonder and joy, awe and worship in Ave Maria (C Gounod/J S Bach), Nativity Carol (J Rutter), and Christmas Sanctus (L Dengler/S N Dengler).

Donkey Carol (J Rutter) sang the rhythm of the donkey ride and the atmosphere of wonder in the stable, while ‘How Lovely are thy dwellings (Brahms) was a masterpiece in expressing deep emotions of reverence, holiness and more, using tone, pace, and wonderfully controlled levels of volume.

These pieces – and many more on the programme –expressed so many of the feelings of Christmas, and Adrian White (Musical Director) was brave enough to include in the programme The Long Day Closes (A Sullivan), which dared to touch on things so many people experience at Christmas time – and especially now after the devastation of COVID – the grief and sadness of loss of loved ones. The choir sang this beautifully; it was heartfelt while still gentle. It felt appropriate for it to be included and not pushed away amidst the general gaiety of the season.

During the concert, the audience was able to enjoy singing several carols with the choir, and to laugh at the festive hats worn by the singers in appropriate songs. A duo from Vivaldi’s Gloria was expertly and expressively sung by two of the choir’s sopranos, while a trio which included the choir’s Musical Director was received with much laughter and applause.

SEAFORD MUSIC SOCIETY

Seaford Music Society is holding a concert at 3pm on February 12th at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road, Seaford BN25 2EE.

The London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble will be playing with some excellent music by Mozart, Brahms and Enescu.

The London Mozart Players was founded in 1949 by Violinist Harry Blech and they are the longest established chamber orchestra in the United Kingdom. Blech had just branched out into conducting, and continued to arrange and perform very successful concerts with the players in the Wigmore Hall in London which led to regular broadcasts on the BBC. The orchestra performed at the Royal Festival Hall in 1951 and have become regular visitors since then, along with the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John’s Smith Square,. St Martin-in-the-Fields amongst others and is currently resident orchestra at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls. The orchestra has enjoyed the patronage of the Earl Of Wessex since 1988.

Tickets are available from Paul Moore at treasurer@ seafordmusicsociety.com or at Newbury Tully Estate Agents, 53 Church Street, Seaford BN25 1LD.

We welcome you to this concert.

The concert drew towards its conclusion with a mighty rendition of Worthy is the Lamb and the Amen Chorus (G F Handel) and ended with huge audience appreciation. There were many words of praise from audience members, perhaps all summed up with one comment from someone to a friend: ‘Beautiful voices in perfect harmony. A joy to listen to.

Watch for publicity for the choir’s Summer Concert in June to make sure you give yourself the delicious treat of hearing more of this talented choir. Visit the Concentus website at seafordchoir.com for information about the choir and how to join.

A HEALTHY HEART FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

It’s that time of year when we think about who sets our heart a flutter, or who we will give our heart to. There are heart-covered cards in the shops, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. The heart is centre stage on February 14th. But to misquote a popular saying, ‘a heart is for life, not just for Valentine’s Day!’

Your heart works hard. It’s essential to pump nutrient and oxygen-rich blood to your whole body, as well as carry metabolic waste products away.

Most people think heart disease only affects older people but this isn’t true. The way you live in while you’re young impacts your heart health in later life. Plaque can begin accumulating in your arteries in your teens and twenties. It comprises of fatty deposits, made up of waste products produced by the body’s cells. If plaque goes unchecked it can thicken the blood vessel walls, clog arteries and take a toll on your heart.

It’s commonly thought that heart disease is primarily a problem which affects men, but it’s also the second leading cause of death for women (after Alzheimer’s) in the UK, and about two in ten of the deaths caused by coronary artery disease occur in adults, whether male and female, who are under 65 years old. This means that whatever sex you are, making heart-healthy choices when you’re young will reduce your risk of heart disease as you age.

Ways to reduce the risk of heart disease include:

• Eating a healthy diet

• Regular exercise

• Maintaining a healthy weight

• Avoiding smoking (or giving up)

• Avoiding excess alcohol

• Managing stress levels.

It’s also important to keep up with regular wellness examinations, including monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Most pharmacists can carry out these checks.

One myth about heart disease is that all fat is bad for you, but while certain types of fats like saturated and trans fats are linked to heart disease, other types of fats can actually lower your risk of problems. Include some unsaturated fats in your diet, as they are beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels. Unsaturated fats are found in fresh nuts, olive oil, and low-fat dairy products as well as fish rich in omega-3 fatty acid such as salmon.

Genes also play a role when it comes to heart health. It’s true that some people will always be more at risk of heart disease because of genes they’ve inherited from their parents. But just because you have a genetic predisposition to heart disease does not mean that its inevitable you will succumb. However, if you engage in harmful behaviours, such as smoking, excessive drinking avoiding exercise, and eating an unhealthy diet, you will definitely put yourself more at risk. Poor lifestyle choices can increase your cholesterol levels, cause high blood pressure, and even result in type-2 diabetes. All of these have the potential to increase your risk for contracting heart disease, so if you know you have genetic risk factors, it’s even more important to maintain a healthy weight, keep your blood pressure under control, and stay active.

This Valentine’s Day, ask yourself if whoever you choose to give your heart to, will be getting a healthy one!

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE

The Mayor of Seaford Councillor Olivia Honeyman hosted the annual Mayoral Carol Service at Seaford Baptist Church on Monday 19th December.

Many distinguished local dignitaries, including the Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex, Charles Anson, and members of the public were able to attend and support the Mayor, immersing themselves in the festivities.

Acting Sergeant-at-Mace, Keith Blackburn, lead the dignitaries into the church for the service, where Cllr Olivia Honeyman welcomed everyone. The Archway Contemporary Choir interspersed readings by members of the Seaford Quakers. The service complemented and continued the Mayor’s themes from the civic service –raising awareness of those fleeing religious persecution

and war or the growing consequences of climate change. This provided an opportunity for an inspiringly alternative reflection on the festive period.

With thanks to the generosity of the congregation, a staggering retiring collection of £210.46 was collected for Mayor Cllr Honeyman’s chosen charities; Waves, Refuge and Seahaven Storehouse.

Speaking after the service, Mayor Cllr Honeyman said ‘A massive thanks go to Jane Reeves from the Archway Choir and Ali Campbell from the Seaford Quakers who helped organise the concert. Many thanks goes to everyone who attended the Christmas Carol Service, the service helped raise some much-needed funds for the three chosen Mayoral charities.’

Once this February issue reaches you Christmas and the New Year will be well behind us. However I would still like to thank our customers old and new for their support during the festive season and the nice cards and gifts to the volunteers. The year has started well for us with all our old friends returning, and I am pleased to say some new faces who seemed to enjoy their visit. I am still amazed to find out how many people do not know where to find us, I was in a taxi the other day and the driver did not know where we are, even though he had regularly stopped outside. We are in one of the oldest buildings in Seaford that has been in continuous use since the16th century at the bottom end of South Street. We serve tea, coffee and hot chocolate in matching china crockery. ALFRISTON & CUCKMERE VALLEY TWINNING ASSOCIATION

A trumpet accompaniment for some items added to the enjoyment of the winter concert by Lo Polidoro and Nigel. Lo’s wonderful singing and Nigel’s accomplished accordion playing made the evening of live French-themed music an absolute pleasure. Another of our regular winter events is the Fête des

Rois, traditionally held in France to celebrate Epiphany. We have some excellent cake bakers among our members, who make lovely Galettes des Rois, even hiding fèves in them, rather as British bakers put a sixpence in a Christmas pudding. Thanks are due to Angela Morrison for holding a bakery class to improve our Galettes des Rois skills – the results were delicious.

This year’s Annual General Meeting is on Sunday

12th March 2023, 4pm to 6pm at the Old Chapel Centre, Alfriston.

Please come to the AGM, new members are always welcome, and we usually keep the business short so we can have a cup of tea and a chat – it’s a nice way to spend a spring Sunday afternoon together.

Wood Creatives MAKING SCULPTURE NATURALLY

‘In my opinion, everything, every shape, every bit of natural form, animals, people, pebbles, shells, anything you like are all things that can help you to make a sculpture.’

Wood Creatives are a diverse group of men and women who love creating and making things from wood. Our members are making items from the wide variety of wood available to us using a variety of techniques. These include relief carving, sculpture, lathe turning, scroll sawing and pyrography – just to name a few. We also have been known to make furniture, boxes and other household items as well as fixing chairs, stools and other broken and damaged furniture – we have been ‘The Repair Shop’ for decades. We are always open to new ideas and techniques that broaden the scope for working with the wide variety of timbers available, and to include the many craft skills involved in working creatively with wood.

We are steadily gathering in numbers from Seaford, Newhaven and the whole East Sussex area. We continue to improve our equipment and facilities at our workshop within The Hillcrest Centre, Bay Vue Road, Newhaven. Wood Creatives of Newhaven have traditionally been a woodcarving club although members have undertaken a wide range of wood crafts.

The Club is now running a wood turning section so that members can turn wooden objects like table legs, vases, tool handles, mallets, dishes, bowls and much more. The Club has four lathes and also has chisels and other turning tools available to use.  With this wealth of equipment the Club is currently running a wood turning day every Tuesday. Initially there will be teaching sessions and days with expert help at hand to guide and advise. Those who are passed out on the lathes will be able to use them unsupervised. The Club has limited safety equipment for members, but participants are advised to have their own if possible.

As we are in a position to engage with community groups and help future projects with our skills and workshop facilities, we hope to forge wider links to

community activities

making lasting relationships and welcome new ideas to our Wood Creative facilities.

Currently we open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3.30pm. As our numbers have increased we now have the options to open on other weekdays (Wednesday and Friday) and as the new year unfolds we are considering the possibilities of opening in the evenings and even weekends if demand is high enough. The current fees are £25 per month, with half price for the unwaged (tea and biscuits are free). For beginners the club provides a good selection of carving chisels as well as hand and electric tools, for use in the club. We also ‘provide’ a friendly and helpful environment with advice and support from experienced members.

The current management team (Ted Gordon –treasurer, Jeremy Adams – secretary, Joe Boylan –publicity) has built up the membership to pre-lockdown levels. We are however very keen to welcome new members to our club, If interested please pop by on a Monday, Tuesday or a Thursday to look us over and have a guided tour. Wood Creatives are at The Hillcrest Centre, Bay Vue Road, Newhaven, BN9 9LH. Otherwise if you need any information contact Joe  07768 331 038

NEWHAVEN TWINNING ASSOCIATION

In the early summer, 37 members of Newhaven Twinning Association travelled to their twin town of La Chapelle Saint Mesmin, close to Orléans for a busy weekend to celebrate ten years of twinning between the two towns.

Half of us travelled as foot passengers on the ferry to Dieppe, where we were collected by a coach and taken to La Chapelle Saint Mesmin. The rest of us travelled in our own cars, as we planned to take the opportunity to spend more time in France, for the first time since the pandemic.

Official customs and passport checks were less onerous than we had expected, and the journeys went smoothly.

We were all hosted by people of the town, many of whom have become our good friends over the past ten years. We were greeted at the Espace Beraire, a large community centre, with gifts of local vinegar, mustard and potted meats, then off to a late supper with our host families.

The following day was filled with celebrations. A parade (seemingly of most of the townspeople) with a British theme, started the day. Harry Potter, Mary Poppins and a large red telephone box were in evidence, as well as a band and a very large amount of paper confetti!

Following a flash mob, there were speeches and a presentation of gifts. Newhaven Twinning presented a red post box and a picture of the lifeboat returning to harbour in a storm, and La Chapelle Saint Mesmin presented a painting of their town hall in autumn. Flowers presented to both chairpersons were, naturally, red, white and blue.

Following a vin d’honneur (a glass of sparkling wine) and a buffet brunch, there was a full afternoon of displays and activities. Classic British cars, photographic displays, talks by the local historical society and a visit to the dragon’s cave were among the offerings. At the end of the afternoon it was very pleasant to escape from the 29ºC heat and sit in the shade of the park to listen to a concert given by the Harmonie de La Chapelle Saint Mesmin.

We just had time to return to our hosts to freshen up

before we were out again to a dinner dance, enjoying a four-course meal with live music. Dancing continued until late, when we returned home clutching another present of glasses from the local Duralex factory, a special edition in red, white and blue.

The Sunday was, if anything, even hotter. There were visits to local chateaux, a barbecue, and the local walking group organised walks of 5, 10 and 15 kilometres along the Loire river. In the afternoon, some of the group played pétanque at the pétanque club, and played Mölkke, a sort of skittles game. The evening was spent relaxing with our host families.

The following morning it was time to say farewell, but not before a brunch and a final group photograph. The group travelling by coach left for Dieppe, and the rest of us departed for various destinations in France.

If anyone is interested in joining the Twinning Association, please look at our Facebook page, or contact Norman Hopson at norman.hopson@ btinternet.com.

CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS

There have always been topics for which a sustained conversation has been difficult. Famously in 50s Britain it was ‘no sex please we’re British’. The 60s rather eroded that and it was sometimes remarked, linking it to consumerism, that the tabooed subject had become death as the disruptor of happiness. Perhaps the pandemic in turn has somewhat reduced that taboo, with Britain amongst the highest levels of death pro rata per total population.

Today however the real party pooper, the new social no-go area, is likely to be the climate and ecological emergency (CEE). So why would that be? In 2022 the CEE was driven home in Britain by a 40ºC –heatwave, drought and the impact on crops; not to forget that it had already crept closer to the horizon of consciousness through spectacular floods in Europe. Why then the need to change the subject? The new subliminal horror is the consequent approaching end of ‘our way of life’ Not through a much exaggerated ‘invasion’ by immigrants – that certainly gets talked about – but the end of Western consumer society as most of us have known it. This is the truly awful ‘death’ we will soon (if not already) be facing.

Enter the spread of Climate Cafés, with Seaford’s now running for a year, where the thoughts and feelings thereby triggered can be freely aired and discussed. Aptly enough, the already mentioned taboo on death as a subject of sustained conversation and reflection gave rise in the early 2000s to the meetings known as Death Cafés. Climate Cafés draw on the acknowledged need from that practice of a safe, nourishing and hospitable setting. Like death warmed up, a cynic might say. However the argument for the provision of such a social space hinges on the fact, to quote the black American novelist James Baldwin (referring to racism): ‘Not everything that is faced can be changed, but until something is faced, nothing can be changed’. To be able to speak and address the feelings that arise with a given subject is the essential prerequisite for effective action. Climate Cafés have that specific brief, no more than that. So please note, there is no pressure from the facilitator or participants to

follow up with any particular action. A Climate Café is therefore emphatically not a recruitment space for any organisation concerned with the CEE or other related political concerns, nor a debating room for arguing about the science.

We have our work cut out just to stay with that elephant in the room. Otherwise, for sure, in due course, we will be trampled on, disempowered by dread or lost in dissociation. Or, as commonly now, hovering in disavowal, that state of mind when we know something to be truly the case, yet we persistently pretend to ourselves and others that it is not so.

FAREWELL TO A CLUB AND CHAIR

The Seaford Stroke & Caring Club has finally closed its doors on the 19th December. The Club had seen a steady decline of members due to age, health and COVID disruption, it was therefore decided that the Club had fulfilled its role and it was time to close. The Chair, Joyce Woodgate of the Club also felt that it was her time reluctantly to retire after 37 years of service.

Joyce joined the Stroke Club in 1985. She started by helping with the teas on a 3-month trial basis, but within weeks was organising programme of weekly events. The Stroke Club at the time was under the umbrella of the Red Cross.

In 1986 Joyce agreed to take over the running of the Red Cross Work Party which met weekly on a Wednesday and was in danger of closing. The Work Party made things to sell in order to raise funds. Joyce supplied some of the materials that could be used. She organised tabletop sales and coffee mornings.

In 1989 Joyce became the Chair of the Seaford Stroke Club, and has remained in the position to the present time. The Stroke Club split with the Red Cross in 1990 and decided to get back to basics. The Club would now not only struggle to get funds but would also be without a meeting place as the Red Cross intended to sell their premises. Without Joyce’s efforts, the Club would have folded then, but she contacted St James who had just set up premises in an old garage complex in Blatchington Road to provide somewhere for local Clubs/Charities. So started a long and happy relationship between the two organisations.

In 1991 Joyce was at the forefront of the campaign to seek formal Charity status, which took about 18 months. The Club then changed its name to Seaford Stroke & Caring Club Charity Trust. This meant that the club was open to all.

On 19th of December members and volunteers said farewell, not only to the club but also Joyce in her very much deserved retirement. She was presented with flowers, a magnificent garden plant and a vase with an inscription bearing the club’s grateful thanks for her total commitment.

What Affects the Value of Your Property?

If you’re considering selling your property in 2023, the first question you’ll inevitably ask is how much it’s worth.

Your home may be invaluable to you and your loved ones, but it’s also got a market value.

But how is a property valued? Is there a magic formula? How does an agent decide its worth? And why might your property be valued less than the house two doors down?

Let’s look at some of the different factors that affect the value of your property.

Facts and figures

We look at similar properties to yours and what they have sold for. To avoid overvaluing your home, we consider similar properties that haven’t sold or have sold for considerably less than they were priced at.

The property

When valuing a property, we also look at its general condition. For example, does it need lots of repairs? Has it been renovated recently? Is there potential to extend?

The way the property is presented will also influence the selling price, because a cluttered, messy home is harder to market (regardless of the décor), making it more difficult to attract potential buyers. Other factors we consider when valuing a property include the following:

l Number of bedrooms

l Size and layout of the property

l Potential to extend

l On- or off-street parking

l Location and proximity to schools and amenities

l Type of road (e.g. a cul-de-sac location or busy high street).

The seller

We listen to understand a seller’s position before valuing a property. However, there’s a difference between sellers needing to sell ASAP and those waiting for the right offer. So, if a seller needs a quick sale, it might be worth valuing the property at a slightly lower price to attract more viewings.

If you’re looking to sell your property, contact us, and we’ll value your property honestly, accurately and expertly.

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF SEAFORD

The Inner Wheel Club of Seaford was founded on 6th December 1947, and to celebrate the 75th Anniversary, members, partners and friends enjoyed a three-course meal at Seaford Golf Club with Guest Speaker, Major His Honour, Judge Raymond Naqvi OBE MEti TD VR giving a talk about Murderous Women in the 19th and 20th Century.

Twelve members played skittles against the Inner Wheel Club of Lindfield and Cuckfield at the Bull Inn, Henfield, as part of the District competition.

An enjoyable time was had by all, even though Seaford failed to make it through to the next round.

On 20th December Past President, Sue Barratt, held a Christmas Jumper Morning at her house, with mulled

wine and mince pies raising money for charity.

International Inner Wheel Day was held on 10th January. It is celebrated by clubs in 100 countries. This date is chosen because on this day in 1924, 27 ladies met at the Mother Club, The Manchester Inner Wheel Club, England, and adopted the name Inner Wheel. This organisation was originally established for the wives and daughters of Rotarians, although no Rotary connection is now required to become a member. Annually Clubs give personal assistance, through friendship, Service and International understanding to those requiring help, either an individual or a group. This year Seaford Inner Wheel donated items to Seahaven Foodbank. Money, raised on the day at a coffee morning, was donated to Water Aid and Sight Savers.

On Sunday 4th December the Seaford Striders hosted the famous Mince Pie 10 race. It was a cold day with a temperature of only 5º and a chilly wind.

With historical data proving on the day no shows were consistent, we increased the number of entrants to 650. Once more, the race sold out quickly, Again, proving how popular this race is!

With our intent commitment to support our environment and sustainability where possible, we invited Green Runners, represented by Darren, Jane and Alfie Evans, to form a kit swap shop, allowing runners to donate and share unused sports kit to help reduce unnecessary production. They also provided, a kind donation from Nurhu, zero waste energy bars. These were available to the runners and received great feedback and uptake. Our chosen charities The Chaseley Trust and Waves, represented by Jodie and Jane arrived to set up table displays with charity information.

Christmas music played out as the participants began to arrive, they had the opportunity to place their baggage in safe storage and gradually the hall began to fill up with the runners, many of whom were in amazing fancy dress (even Buddy the Elf). Time was flying and a notification was given for the runners to begin assembling at the start outside the front of the Leisure Centre for a warmup with Sarah from Gingerfit.

After a briefing from Race Director, Nick Farley, the high spirited, highly charged runners were set on their way with a Thunderbirds countdown from 5 to 1. Before we knew it, shortly after 12 noon, our first male runner, 529, James Turner (Brighton & Hove), crossed the line, in an astonishing time of 55:07! The course record had gone.

2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th male followed within 7 minutes. Then our 1st Lady came flying into site, 576, Amy Harris (Brighton Phoenix) powering to the finish and, breaking the course record in a time of 1:05.39! 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th ladies followed within 6 minutes of the winner.

As more and more runners finished, the presentations were made to the first five male and female finishers, along with the team with the most runners – this year’s

crown went to Orpington Road Runners who had arrived in a coach. Overall, there were 505 finishers and the event raised much-needed funds for The Chaseley Trust and Waves. Here’s to next year’s race –dates TBC.

Results:

1st Male – James Turner (Brighton & Hove) 55:07 NEW CR; 2nd Male – Dan Stent (Vegan Runners) 1:00:24; 3rd Male – Jamie Signy (Brighton Phoenix) 1:00:47.

Did you know that that there are over 62,000 unpaid Carers in East Sussex?

Three in five of us will be unpaid carers at some point in our lives. Carers are one of the most isolated groups in the UK, but with your help we can reduce that loneliness.

The Association of Carers provides free volunteerled services to unpaid Carers in East Sussex. We have 17 families in Seaford that are on the waiting list for our respite and befriending service – could you spare a few hours a week to help a neighbour?

Some carers use the respite time to go shopping or for a walk, some meet friends, or even just get a few hours uninterrupted sleep! Without our volunteers, some carers just never get a break. As a volunteer you would get full training, there is no physical care – it’s simply keeping a loved one safe whilst the carer gets a chance of a brief break each week.

This is some Carer feedback about his volunteer: ‘It’s so great to have someone like this – it gives me some freedom and something to look forward to. I feel secure for the first time in ages in leaving Mrs W for a bit.’

It can be an overwhelming thought that one in 14 of over 65s will develop a form of dementia, though this isn’t an inevitable factor of age – so just how does it affect some of us but not others?

This is a question to ponder as we think of the number of people in our families and social circles who have had some form of dementia.

Dementia and you

Dementia doesn’t just affect the person; it effects the whole family. When both grandparents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease along with vascular dementia, we knew of one family who were suddenly left with two anxious apparent strangers who had to be monitored and looked after 24-hours a day to keep them safe. The grandfather was especially challenging and would leave the house in the early hours of the morning with his shopping bag full to the brim with all the cutlery in the house and would be found wandering, confused and cantankerous when approached. To this day they remember him wandering about in his pjs, slippers and their mother’s coat, hauling a bag of knives and forks, with no real idea why he did it. That’s the thing about dementia. It makes no real sense how it will affect the individual or how quickly it will take hold, until you’re left with a seeming shadow of the person you used to know. Yet, the individual does remain, and though it may require more effort to dig down to find the person you once knew, they are there and there are rich moments to be shared still with them.

Spotting the changes

One of the things this family’s grandfather would forget to do at the start, was pay his bills, or on the odd occasion he’d pay them twice. Their grandmother was much more progressive in her illness and after a series of strokes added to her already burgeoning Alzheimer’s, became bed ridden with vascular dementia and was no longer able to manage her affairs at all.

We are all able to look out for small changes in a people’s behaviour. An elderly friend who suddenly misses paying their rent for example, may be out of character and may respond to this differently than others.

Being dementia aware is something we should all be, particularly where we share living space with others or even just within our own family groups. Knowing the symptoms to look for and how to prepare for when there is a diagnosis will help us all prepare should things progress further.

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for over 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

TROUBLE ON THE ESPLANADE – AND NO GOLF ON SUNDAYS!

Towards the end of the 19th Century, Seaford beach would be crowded with visitors every summer, with bathing huts trundling back and forth, Punch ’n’ Judy, pleasure boats and the like, it would have made a joyful scene. But in mid-September 1894, excitement of another kind entirely took place with a touring Pierrot troupe giving an impromptu performance with a portable piano and taking a collection from the crowd afterwards.

For reasons best known to himself, this jollity incensed Mr W. Russell, who was the manager of the Seaford Bay Estate Company, and whose land fronted the beach and legally extended all the way down to the high water mark. Since the troupe were on the Company’s beach, he ejected them with a force of 20 strong-arm men, who carried the portable piano several streets away –well away from the Company’s land.

Mr Russell’s justification was that several residents and visitors had complained about the shocking nature of some of the songs. However Mr Arthur Croften, the manager of the troupe replied that: ‘I have several witnesses to prove that he prefaced the removal of the piano with bad language, taking advantage of my temporary absence to air his vernacular to the two ladies left in charge . . . that speaks for itself. That a high class concert entertainment as mine is, representing such masters as Handel, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Balfe,

Sullivan etc and delineated by competent artists should be complained of by anyone with an ordinary amount of intelligence is incredible.’

One can almost hear Mr Croften’s indignation. The altercation between the manager of the Seaford bay Estate Company and the troupe was part of the townspeople’s growing dissatisfaction with the Company, prompting the Seaford and Newhaven Gazette to ask:

‘How much of Seaford belongs to the people of Seaford, and how much to the Bay Estate Company? It is a question that is being asked every day in Seaford, the inhabitants of which contend that their rights have been ruthlessly swept away in many instances by the Company, among them rights of way in all directions.’

However, as the summer ended, the problem seemed to fade away. But the Pierrot troupe did not fade away as they and other acts returned to play both the Albert Hall in East Street as well as on the beach for the next twenty or so years.

In the same year, Seaford Golf Club dared to propose allowing golf to be played on Sundays from October 1894. A furious debate and reaction followed with the clergy of all denominations preaching against the playing of all and any sport on a Sunday. But there were some voices in favour. Using the name A Publican and Sinner, someone pointed out that both Martin Luther and John Calvin had played bowls on a Sunday and that the ‘opponents of Sunday play object to it much the same way as Macaulay says that the Puritans objected to bull-baiting [because it] gave pleasure to the spectators’. With furious arguments back and forth, it was Robert Lambe’s dictum that sealed the fate of the proposal:

‘We do not want that class of man here who would play golf on a Sunday, and as a tradesman said to me a few days ago, a man who would play golf on a Sunday would not be too particular whether he paid his debts or not...’

Sunday golf stayed away; Seaford’s public sanctity was preserved.

Martello Rotary joins Seaford Striders for the Martello Half Marathon 2023

Following the success of the 2022 Half Marathon, Martello Rotary started planning for the 2023 event and are pleased to announce that it will be making its return in April 2023, but this time organised jointly by Martello Rotary and Seaford Striders, with proceeds being donated to local charities.

This event attracted over 200 entrants in 2022 and looks like becoming a firm favourite with local runners and with the expertise of the Seaford Striders we hope to encourage even more entrants this year.

Martello Rotary will be donating their share of the proceeds to the Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance, whereas Seaford Striders will be supporting Waves (a local charity supporting families during this difficult time)

and The Chaseley Trust who run a home in Eastbourne for adults with learning disabilities.

The event will be held on Sunday 16th April with registration at Seaford Rugby club from 8am onwards. The start will be at 9.30 at Bonningstedt Parade. Given the financial pressure many runners will be facing, we have kept the entry fee down to previous years’ prices at £21 for England Athletics affiliated runners, £23 for non-affiliated and £25 for on the day entries.

As in previous years, this race will offer a beautiful but tough run following footpaths and tracks up onto the Downs. After a section along the Southdowns Way taking in the stunning views, there will be an exhilarating downhill run to Bishopstone then a long, flat run along the seafront to the cheers of the crowds!

This is a race recognised by England Athletics and as before, will be chip timed – race timing will be provided by the professional race organisers ‘NE Timing’ of Staplehurst in Kent. To enter or for more information go to:

TREES FOR SEAFORD

Leaf Bud

Ever wondered What is it about the spring that makes the new growth of leaves on trees occur? It’s actually two factors: temperature and light. Even though we’re approaching spring now, the whole process starts in autumn. When the days get shorter and temperatures decline, the tree goes dormant, and at the same time sets itself up to burst bud in the spring. That dormant, hardened bud case we see through the winter months protects the growing tissues underneath from harsh weather, and is programmed to grow again in response to increasing light levels and warmer temperatures. This is why sudden warm spells can be so disastrous for trees, and their flower and fruit crop. If a frost ensues after bud burst, new growth may be destroyed for that year.

Do take the time to inspect the variety buds on trees at the moment. More easily appreciated when there are no leaves to distract the eye, see if you can spot the shapes of the black, delicate deer’s hoof bud of the ash, fat green terminal buds on sycamore, mauve alder boxing gloves or furry grey pussy willow buds, (photo above).

Winter planting

Our final tree planting activities for this season will be on the Mason Road verges and hopefully at Jubilee Gardens. The trees planted this year up to end of March 2023 in Seaford can all be registered for the

Queen’s Green Canopy. Do check if ‘your’ tree is present by going to https://queensgreencanopy.org/ map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/.

Nominate your street for new trees!

We are already planning our 2023 Autumn/Winter projects. Would you like to nominate your street for new trees? There must be a grass verge, and we would need one or more keen residents to take on an active liaison role. East Sussex County Council is hoping to have our proposals by the end of March, so please get in touch if you’re interested. Contact details at the end of the article.

Come spring, our ongoing tree care activities, such as pruning and mulching will recommence. Once the leaves begin to appear, we can start to undertake our spring and summer monitoring. In the meantime, we have an upcoming social evening and quiz to find out what we all look like without layers of winter clothing and Hi-Vis Jackets!
