Welcome

to the November issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. It’s November already and summer has definitely been and gone. Glorious autumn is well and truly here! I hope you remembered to put your clocks back last month? Talking of remembering, this month sees Remembrance Day on Sunday 13th, a time to pause and think of the British Service members who have died in wars and other military conflicts. It also gives us a chance to remember loved ones who too have passed away. Remember, remember, the fifth of November – it’s also Guy Fawkes Night this month, so please take care, keep your pets indoors and enjoy yourselves safely. We have good news! Seaford has been awarded a huge grant from the National Lottery in order to ‘make Seaford an even better place to live’. Turn to page 6 to find out how the money will be spent. We also have news from The Youth Counselling Project on page 60, and an update on this year’s fundraising at Driftwood Garden, see page 79 With the festive season just around the corner, there is a variety of art and craft fairs in and around Seaford, with wonderful gifts ideas for Christmas – browse through this issue for more details and see the listings on the What’s On guide, pages 123 to 128. All this and so much more in this November issue. Keep warm and enjoy!

SEAFORD TO RECEIVE OVER £200,000 TO MAKE SEAFORD AN EVEN BETTER PLACE It has recently been announced that a Partnership (known as Ouse Valley Climate Action) has been awarded a grant of over £2 million by the National Lottery. Ten organisations, led by the South Downs National Park, and including Lewes District Council and the Seaford Community Partnership (SCP) will be taking forward many exciting projects and initiatives. SCP has been exploring the feasibility of extending the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve. This has the potential for tripling the Nature Reserve and opens the possibility for additional recreation space, wildlife encouragement, carbon capture by bio diverse planting, and stimulating the tourist economy of all the lower Ouse communities. Working with Martello Rotarians, we are creating six ‘Friends of ’ Local Green Spaces groups, that vary in size and development. Discussions are underway with Seaford Town Council to help establish the Friends of: Normansal, The Ridings and Princess Drive Green Space. This will be followed by discussions with residents who live near Chalvington Fields, The Last Wood & Meadows, and Foster Close. A climate change educational beach garden, initiated by local residents, will be created by volunteers (including students) who will transform an un-madeup road (Cliff Gardens) and an adjacent field, Martello Pump Field, into a garden. The garden will increase biodiversity and raise awareness of climate change issues; be an educational resource for Seaford schools;

St Peter’s Church

SEMINAR

A Seminar on The Mystery of the Trinity is to be held at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, on Thursday 24th November, starting at 7pm. It will be held by the Rector, the Rev Arwen Folkes, and offered in person and online. For further details contact the office on: 01323 899054. Or you can email at: officeebb.benefice@gmail.com. A donation of £5 is suggested if anyone wishes to contribute.

involve residents as volunteers and sponsors of parts of the garden; give ready access for cyclists, pedestrians, and the disabled; and leave the adjacent Martello Pump Field as an area of natural grassland. Gabby Tofts and Christian Funnell, the designer and artist who created the Shoal Community bench at Splash Point, are designing the garden. Planning permission will be required and authority sought to stop up the road. This will require much public consultation. Furthermore, we plan to set up a Friends of Cliff Gardens group. A consultant is conducting a detailed study of routes, that can be enhanced over a number of years to make it easier and safer to cycle in Seaford and hence more cars can be left at home. A number of high priority enhancement for cycle tracks, cycle lanes, road junctions, and cycle parking have been identified which, potentially, can be included in bids by ESCC for funding.. Next year we will develop some targeted events to encourage cycling locally. We will be working with National Park colleagues, drawing on the experience of other towns where changes have resulted in more walking and cycling within and to town centres. Trees for Seaford and On The Verge are looking forward to collaborating with others to plant trees, renature parts of our green spaces, and raise awareness of the biodiversity crisis and what we can all do about it. It is fantastic that these substantial grants of over £200,000 to progress the climate change related projects will benefit residents and visitors by making Seaford an even better place and encourage people to support local businesses. The Seaford Community Partnership (https:// seafordpartnership.co.uk/) will continue to work closely with many organisations. Anyone who wishes to help with the exciting projects mentioned above should contact the Partnership via the website or phone Keith Blackburn on 01323 870902.

St Peter’s Church

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Perhaps he is the most famous artist in the world, and certainly the man who created the world’s most famous painting, the Mona Lisa (image left), the lady with that tantalising, mysterious smile. But there is so much more to know about Leonardo da Vinci, who was born in Italy, died in France, and is known throughout the world. An enticing opportunity to hear much more about him, and gaze at some of his most famous works, including The Last Supper, will be offered at a lecture to be given by the local art historian Kay Blackburn at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, at an event that is open to everyone. Kay is embarking on a considerable challenge, for Leonardo was undeniably an Italian polymath of the Renaissance who was active not just as a painter but

also as a draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect who lived from 1452 to 1519. Quite a man....and quite a challenge for Kay, who plans to talk about a range of his works – portraits, narratives and mysterious subjects, and not only art. There is also his more scientific studies and designs, nature studies, engineering projects including a prototype helicopter and tank. All this will be at the start of December and so will lead up to a more festive feeling by looking at some Christmas-related paintings, sketches and art works, including The Virgin of the Rocks which is in the National Gallery in London. This special lecture is on Tuesday 6th December, at 2.30pm, and appropriate Christmas refreshments will be included in the price of the tickets, only £7. It is best to book through the benefice office at St Peter’s Church on: 01323 899054. Or you can email at: officeebb.benefice@gmail.com

EAST SUSSEX CHARITY BOOST FOR WORTHY CAUSES East Sussex Charity Boost for Worthy Causes has been busy with their largest drop-offs of donations since they started (just over two years ago). Forty of the members have been frantically making and buying items since April, determined to hopefully bring a little joy to a few worthy causes this Christmas. The ladies (and three chaps), ages ranging from eleven to mid eighties, were determined to push themselves to help as many

SEAFORD ARTS AND CRAFTS GROUP ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FAIR We are happy to announce the return of this popular event for all your Christmas shopping needs. This year we will be in The Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford from Thursday 10th – Sunday 13th November 10.30am to 4.30pm We look forward to welcoming you, albeit slightly earlier than usual, to our annual fair, an event we know many of you regard as the start of the festive season. We have a great many beautiful, hand crafted gifts from local makers and artists to suit every budget. Choose from unique jewellery in silver, enamel and beads, from classic designs to funky fashion; ceramics and porcelain; beeswax candles; paintings by Sussex artists; fragrant soaps; and gorgeous textiles, including recycled and eco- friendly. We have talented stained glass artists, one of a kind greetings cards and journals, paper crafted gift boxes and bags, Christmas decorations, beautiful wood turning, and much, much more.

humans and animals that they feasibly could. Choosing a wide variety of not-forprofit charities across a broad spectrum. Firstly in their own home towns (mainly Seaford and Eastbourne), then reaching further afield. Twenty home-made carrier bags are fillled with crochet items, (to provide warmth), and edible treats that will be sent to St James’ Trust Seaford, 56 gifts made and bought will be sent to a ladies refuge’ in Brighton, ten Christmas sacks, each containing a set of thermal underwear, three pairs of thermal socks, a hat and thermal gloves, along with thirty additional pairs of thermal socks, and tins of chocolates will be sent to a homeless charity in Brighton, three hampers for dogs, cats and rabbits plus cans, bags of biscuits, and knitted blankets will be sent to Kit Wilson. Finally over 400 Christmas gifts will be sent for the children of Trussell Trust. We still can’t quite believe what has been achieved. Thanks must also go to Brewers in both Seaford and Eastbourne for donating wallpaper to decorate our gift boxes, also Morrisons champions in Eastbourne for donating tissue paper and cellophane, and to residents in Seaford and Eastbourne for donations of wool. The main driving force and one of the many things we have in common, is empathy. With the wide rage of ages, (particularly where the foodbank is concerned), many have either been the parent, or the child at Christmas, and have experienced the pain themselves. This gives us a chance to put something right, that we couldn’t at the time. All we can say at the end of the day is we tried our hardest to hopefully bring a smile on Christmas Day. CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS Concentus’ greatly missed Christmas Concerts are BACK! Making a wonderful start to festive times for so many Seaford people, the choir is delightedly looking forward to being able to fill to over-flowing a melodious space at this busy time, reminding everyone of the sparkle, joy, love, remembrance, peace and happiness of the season. Concentus started rehearsals at the beginning of September, welcoming a lot of new singers eager to try the choir out! As usual they were all given a very warm reception and received a ‘starter’ pack complete with music and tips and paired up with a member in their voice range. All new singers have plenty of time to decide if Concentus is the right place for them. Concentus rehearses on Monday evenings in their fantastic rehearsal venue at Willingdon Community School in Eastbourne. They also have a full day rehearsal in November and for this year, a Saturday morning practice has also been slotted in to make up for the one

CONCENTUS Sings CHRISTMAS 4pm SATURDAY 10th DECEMBER

Adrian White, Musical Director, has chosen an engaging mix of well-loved pieces and some which might be new to you for this year’s programme, including two composed by Handel (one being the less obvious, ‘Nightingale Chorus’); one by Brahms; a beautiful piece by Vivaldi (sung as a duet) and a moving work by Faure. John Rutter contributes four works including the evocative Donkey Carol and the choir sings a traditional Ukrainian carol with lyrics arranged by A Snyder. Panis Angelica’s which is part of a hymn written by St Thomas Aquinas, set to music in 1872 by C. Frank, is beautifully peaceful, while The Ragtime Carol (J Hewitt) sweeps in with bursting energy. There is much more on the programme – carols, Christmas songs (A Doo-Wop Christmas sounds intriguing !), a piece sung by a group, a duet and a trio consisting of Adrian himself, and Lou Soper (Assistant Musical Director) and Jo Fowler (Assistant Conductor). Watch out for a surprise perhaps? As always there is an invitation for the audience to join the choir to sing the traditional carols. You definitely don’t want to miss this annual celebration of Christmas, which will have you leaving with a smile on your face and your toes tapping! Therefore do put the date in your diary and make sure of your ticket, so you can give yourselves this rich, multi-faceted taste of Christmas! The Seaford Concert is on Saturday 10th December at Seaford Baptist Church Belgrave Road BN25 2EE and the Eastbourne performance is on Saturday 17th December at St Saviour’s Church South Street Eastbourne BN21 4UT. Both concerts start at 4pm.

SEAFORD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Following the ‘Welcome Back’ meeting we were straight into the first round of the PDI League for Projected Digital Images, held on-line via Zoom. In the standard group Eve Crowley got off to a good start, being awarded a 20/20 score for her rose photo Arthur Bell (right). Martin Brewer also received a 20 for Hitting the High Notes (left). The advanced group also had two 20s, Common Darter by Colin Mitchell (below) and Jennie Edwards’ view of Herstmonceux Castle. The following week we were pleased to be holding our first print competition for nearly three years! It took a while for us to remember how to put together the display boards, but we got there in the end and it was great to see over 30 prints on show. The judge for the evening was our old friend and ex-SPS member Jack Taylor EFIAP DPAGB. Congratulations to new member Sandra Mitchell whose Blue Tit print (left) was the only one scoring 20/20 in the standard group. In the advanced group there were

16

four 20s and two 19s, and Jack said that there was very little to choose between these as they were all excellent. Chris Dawson’s Stop and Go to the Airport scored a 20, and some of you might have seen this at the club’s annual exhibition during the summer. It was a very ‘Marmite’ image (you either love or hate it) and thankfully Jack loved it. Also scoring 20 were Beautiful Light, a landscape by Steve Wares (left), The Outgoing Tide by Jennie Edwards (below) and Simon Rigby’s striking Glasswing butterfly photo. Our first online talk of the year was about Smartphone Photography. Jeanette Lendon was speaking to us from Hertfordshire and she runs a business teaching this subject. Her approach is that we no longer have ‘phones that can also take photos’ but ‘sophisticated cameras that can also make phone calls’. These can now rival DSLRs for some types of photography, but the main advantage is that we carry them around with us the whole time. This was an excellent lecture and her enthusiasm for the subject really came across. I didn’t know that you could focus and control exposure just by tapping the screen and I think all of us learnt something from her talk. There was no meeting on the last Friday of the month but we had an ‘Out and About’ photo meetup in Newhaven on the Saturday morning. The weather was perfect and we had a good turnout. You can see a selection of our photos on the club’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/seafordphotographicsociety. We meet in person on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at Seaford’s Con Club and every other Friday online via Zoom. Our website, which is updated weekly, is www.seafordps.org.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

IS MUSIC IN YOUR BLOOD? Did you play the piano or keyboard when you were younger? Do you want to return to playing but would like some help to remember and build up confidence? Do you just want to learn to play and not do exams? I am a sympathetic, supportive, experienced and understanding teacher. I am also a church organist in Seaford and choir leader, and I play for gigs and events in different places. This involves playing music suited to the occasion and that requested of many different styles. If you would like lessons please contact me:

ALFRISTON & CUCKMERE VALLEY TWINNING ASSOCIATION The September visit of our friends from Veules-lesRoses was a great success, with many wonderful memories made during the first organised visit for three years. The weather was kind as we enjoyed welcome drinks in a committee member’s beautiful garden, and a convivial meal in The Smugglers. Guided tours of Charleston Farmhouse were followed by a visit to Berwick Church, and a delicious home-cooked Indian meal in the Old Chapel Centre. Sunday morning plans were arranged by hosts for their guests, with an option to visit Newhaven Fort on Sunday afternoon. The good mixture of social events and quieter times with hosts gave us all plenty of time to enjoy each other’s company. Don’t miss out on the event of the winter! Concert evening with the wonderful French-themed music and singing of Lo Polidoro Saturday 3rd December 2022 Alfriston War Memorial Hall (Doors open 6pm for 7pm start) Tickets £12 Cheques payable to ACVTA or details from Michael on 07975 913379 or michaeleija@hotmail.com, Membership fees have been waived for everyone in 2022. Events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish, whether or not they speak French. Our membership secretary is Robert at rmorri1847@aol.com.

UNO22 ELEVEN:

UNO is ONE – A Selection of Art, Craft and Design to Celebrate Our First Birthday. Tuesday 1st – Monday 28th November, Gallery Uno, 14A High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG WINTER OPENING TIMES: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Wednesdays 11am – 2pm, CLOSED Sundays. Happy birthday Gallery Uno! A year on, the Sussex Arts Collective’s High Street gallery has evolved and matured, and continues to thrive with an ever-changing series of month-long exhibitions that a growing number of patrons and visitors have fully embraced. During UNO22 ELEVEN you won’t see fireworks but yet more dazzlingly impressive work befitting of the occasion. Since joining in August, Alejandro Martinez has become an immediate hit with his spectacular panoramic prints earning him the honour of being their featured exhibitor for November.

Alejandro Martinez – Fine Art Prints & Architect Born in Granada, Alejandro first visited England in 2000 to visit his cousin who was working at the Park Lane Hotel, London. Having finished his architecture degree in Seville, he accepted a job at the hotel with accommodation enabling him to boast his first UK address as being in Mayfair and set about embracing the immense cultural life on offer. However, he decided to move to Brighton in 2007 having visited there at weekends. He was immediately awestruck by the proximity to the staggeringly beautiful countryside and coastline. Throughout his childhood he was always drawn to the visual arts. Yet, it was only on the suggestion of a friend that he contemplated studying architecture. Ten years on, he graduated as a structural engineer, city planner and architect. His first position in the UK was with Rick

26

Mather Architects. There he was involved in redesigning parts of the London Natural History Museum, producing visual proposals for exhibits such as the roaring T. rex, the skull of a Triceratops and the giant Blue Whale skeleton hanging in the Hintze Hall. In Brighton he has worked on residential schemes renovating homes for the better by optimising space, improving light and creating stunning staircases. He was greatly inspired by Le Courbusier, Alberto Campo Baeza, and Frank Lloyd Wright. As an undergraduate he did exhibit artwork but it was only in Brighton where he found his creative drive. At first he produced small architectural sketches that he sold informally and later recreated them as digital prints with additional blocks of colour. The essence of his work remains the same today, although more complex and layered. Primarily he is influenced by direct experiences of the natural world seen on his downland and coastal walks, but also the work of Samuel Palmer, Ravilious, Hockney and Slater. Each piece begins with a monochrome ink drawing combined with printmaking techniques. He uses specialised paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line pens, sponges, sandpaper, watercolour, ink and charcoal. Once complete ,he scans them, adding colour digitally and collates layers similarly to the plates of a lithographic print. It’s a meticulous process that takes up to a month. When it touches his soul he knows it is finished. Currently he is working on a piece with pheasants at Glyndebourne, echoing 18th- and 19th-century illustrations by James Audenon and Thomas Bewick. He is a member of Studio Greenhouse cooperative where he has a working space. He is the resident artist with The West Pier Trust and runs life drawing sessions at the Arts Club, in Brighton. His motto is ‘Love life, love art’! Alej ez (Alejandro Martinez) Tel: 07946 381116 aljguez@gmail.com www.alejez.com

Their music is reflected in a repertoire which covers Breton, Eastern European, Cajun, English, Irish and French Canadian tunes plus many of their own compositions.

MICKLEFIELD NURSERY OPENS BRAND NEW GARDEN Micklefield Nursery started the new school year with a brand new, functional playground for their Squirrel classroom. Micklefield Nursery has been providing early years child development and care for the 2 – 4-year-olds of Seaford for since 1996. Rated outstanding by Ofsted, Micklefield provides excellent term-time care, education and family support. This year, after an outstanding fundraising effort by parents and carers, the Nursery has been able to re-vamp the whole 2-year-old outside area. Families sponsored a ‘square mile’ of the area to help fund the development, raising an amazing £1,090!

The rest of the project was funded by the Nursery itself, a charity overseen by local Trustees. The outside area was redesigned to capture the imagination of the children with bright colours – a whole purple soft surface was laid. This will allow Micklefield children to safely enjoy their outdoor space in all weather. Micklefield’s early years team have then added many specialised play areas throughout the garden to complement their huge sandpit that was introduced a number of years ago. Kiesa, the Nursery Manager said: ‘It is great to see the 2-year-old children benefitting from their new space, exploring in the fresh air, making new friends and learning new skills.’ This has been a great investment for the small charity, providing much needed outside space for the children of Seaford. To celebrate their new space Micklefield Nursery is holding an open afternoon on Thursday 10th November. Local families and their children are all welcome to visit the Nursery to see this excellent new space.

Members and guests at the September meeting on the subject of ‘S, T and U’ subjects were really treated – apart from ‘Ukraine’ as promised, we had a number of items relating to our dear departed Sovereign, and inevitably Seaford was featured in postcards, together with the greatly missed Brighton Tigers ice-hockey team, and their home skating rink. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ROUNDUP

Special Edition Number 5: How Safe is Seaford Really? All The Statistics for Seaford West.

Carrying on with our close look at crime in Seaford, we had a deep dive into the numbers for Seaford West. If you missed the data for Seaford Central, East, and North, or South you can find our reports in the online editions here https://issuu. com/seafordscene. You can also get a more in-depth view (street to street) directly from the Sussex Police website. Seaford & Bishopstone is divided into 5 areas, so to have a thorough look at what’s what in yours, head on over to https://www.sussex.police.uk/area/ your-area and enter your postcode. To save you a whole lot of time to get the overall picture, here’s our summary of all the data for Seaford West over the last 36 months to June 2022.

Unlike the rest of our town, crime in Seaford West, although low in numbers, is showing a gently increasing trend. It’s worth having a look at what type of crime is specifically increasing, or if this is a general trend across all categories. Remember that these statistics reflect reported crimes and once again this exercise underlines the importance of reporting every crime. Our police resources are allocated based on need, and so if no crime is reported, no resource is allocated.

48

Any crime in progress, anything that looks decidedly off, anything where you can see or think someone is in danger, is always a 999 call. Report all other incidents by calling 101 (and expect a long wait) or report online at https://www.sussex.police.uk/reportcrime. Overall, there is a 4% increase in total reported crimes since 2019/2020. Crimes such as burglary and bicycle theft have dropped to almost zero, and crimes in other categories have remained low and have all fallen. Alarmingly Violence & Sexual offences and Vehicle Crimes have increased. The very good news is that Anti-Social Behaviour has fallen significantly to 2 offences a month on average. We can’t speak to the cause of the rises and drops in specific types of crime, but the falling rate of ASB across Seaford seems to coincide with the change in policing policy and the reintroduction of named PSCOs on the beat. There is a noticeable upward trend throughout Seaford since 2019 in reported Violence and Sexual Offences. We cannot speak to the cause of this rise, but we can advise that if you need help, and you are in danger, or if you know someone is in need of help or in danger, always call 999. Other resources can be found here https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/children-families/ family-support/domestic-violence.

We can’t stress enough the critically important role we have as Seaford Great Neighbours, because nobody knows the neighbourhood better than we who live here. Keeping an eye out for things that look iffy,

reporting crime, caring about our neighbours who are more vulnerable or need a little help, all adds up to safe and happy neighbourhoods. A town where our children can play free-range, where our elders are respected and valued, where our youth are encouraged and praised is the goal. A visible and relevant Neighbourhood Watch also helps to keep crime at bay, and we need do no more than display a roundel on our front doors to achieve this. While every resident of Seaford and Bishopstone is automatically under the umbrella of what we do, our Association relies on membership to keep doing what we do. It costs £3 per household per year to be Association members, and £2 per household per year for retirees. Joining is so simple too – just head over to www.sandbnhw.org/join, choose the subscription that suits you and then follow the onscreen prompts. New members will get a member pack in the post, and if you need fresh roundels, you can order these online in our little shop where everything is free except the postage. That’s it from us for this November edition. Next month we will pull all the data together and add some interesting town statistics that may make you take a fresh look at the way you think of Seaford – far more vibrant, diverse and full of youngsters than you ever could have imagined. Remember to be more vigilant as the days start drawing in, and keep on being a savvy, safe Seaford filled with Great Neighbours. Be generous with your smiles and your kindness.

TREES FOR SEAFORD

originally planted in 2013 by Seaford Rotary. In fact, all the trees we are planting up until the end of March 2023, including Acer campestre, ‘Queen Elizabeth’ will be registered as part of this tribute to the late Queen.

Fantastic Fungi

Although as I write this, the sun is shining and it is unusually warm for early October, the signs of change are all around. The tree canopies are beginning to thin out. The rich colours of berries and fruits gleam in the hedges and leaf colour is now giving way to reds, yellows and browns. In autumn, deciduous trees shut down photosynthesis and reclaim as many valuable chemicals as possible. Chlorophyll is constantly breaking down and being replaced during the summer, but this process slows down now. All those other chemicals in the leaves that were hidden by the green chlorophyll are now revealed. These include flavonols (yellow), carotenoids (orange) and anthocyanins (red to purple). The exact mixture of these compounds varies between tree species, and thus the degree of yellow or red in the leaves. Take a walk in the woods and focus carefully on the ground around fallen and decaying logs and you will find a host of different fungi such as Candle Snuff fungus, White Cheese and Kings Alfred’s Cakes. Those are the visible fungi – but you may be unaware that under the ground trees and plants communicate with each other via the ‘wood wide web’, an amazing mycorrhizal fungal network that allows symbiotic exchange of essential nutrients such as carbon, glucose and minerals between fungi and plants; the network also transmits warnings to distant trees of dangers like insect attack. This underground network is crucial to storing significant amounts of carbon, and therefore has a significant role in mitigating climate change. Research about how tree planting schemes can incorporate this new knowledge is developing, but it certainly seems to be the case that trees prefer to be near other trees – and they don’t even need to be the same species.

National Tree Planting Week This year National Tree Planting week runs from 26th November to 4th December, and work parties will be out both weekends during that time, so look out for us in our high-vis jackets. Hopefully the weather won’t be too inclement! We plan to push ahead with new trees, including cherries, crabapples and hawthorns in Chyngton Avenue and Mason Road. In the Crouch we will be adding three new cherry trees towards the Queens Green Canopy project with the Rotary, WI and Churches Together, to extend the row of trees

54

On other dates, in collaboration with the wonderful Friends of Sutton Downs, we are planting fruit trees near the sports fields at the Leisure Centre, as well as helping put in a wildlife hedge. We would be glad to have more ‘diggers’ over those times, so would love to hear from anyone who would like to help via the email address below – high-vis, spades and biscuits supplied! Our tree expert Keith Sacre is running another practical teach-in on the morning of November 6th.

Lottery bid successful and CIC status achieved! We’re delighted to be a part of the Ouse Valley Climate Action Fund which has been successful in its lottery bid managed by the South Downs National Park (SDNP). TFS put in a joint proposal with On The Verge, our ‘sister’ group, alongside Seaford Community Partnership. The Ouse Valley Climate Action Fund will bring together voluntary groups in Seaford and across the project area. Trees for Seaford and On The Verge are looking forward to collaborating with others to plant trees, renature parts of our green spaces and raise awareness of the biodiversity crisis and what we can all do about it. We are pleased to announce that we have now registered as a community interest company.

Do join us We are always looking for new volunteers to help with planting, monitoring, outdoor backup or indoor admin! We promise a warm welcome to a friendly and inclusive group. We do like to adjourn for refreshments after some of our active sessions, so it can be a good way to meet people too! And finally, with the strong autumn winds expected, please do get in touch if you notice young street trees which need restaking – or other ‘treemergency needs’ Email treesforseaford@gmail.com. leukaemia (CLL). Huge thanks and awe, Holly.

What have distance swimming, yoga and golf got in common? All three are benefiting students at Seaford primary and comprehensive schools whose mental health is in need of therapy. Sea swimmer Holly Manktelow raised £1,191 for The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) by completing a crossing of the English Channel in an amazing 17 hours 22 minutes. Due to tides and currents the 21mile distance increased to 36 miles actually swum, in conditions that were rough enough for attempts by some other swimmers to be aborted. The Seaford Head School music teacher swims with Eastbourne Sea Swimmers, some of whose members helped her to train. Holly was also raising money for CLL Support, a charity which aids sufferers of chronic lymphocytic

Exercise of a more gentle kind resulted in Rosie Waters of Seahaven Yoga presenting TYCP with £335 following her day of meditation and yoga in September. Thanks also to Michele and Simone from Sounds Mystical for performing a relaxing gong bath, and to Frances and Lizzie at Seaford Constitutional Club for providing a great lunch. Grateful thanks too to Seaford Chamber of Commerce who arranged a golfing day with dinner and charity auction together with Seaford Head Golf Club at The View. Very sportingly, this event went ahead despite pouring rain. The dinner was attended by two TYCP trustees who explained what the charity aims to achieve. A cheque for the amount raised is due to be presented at the next meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.

The quiz night postponed in September as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, will now take place at The Old Plough, Church Street on Tuesday 8th November, 7.30pm for 8pm. Join TYCP for a lively and entertaining evening and some challenging questions by quizmaster Peter. Quizzers take part in teams of up to six people and pay £5 each with all proceeds going to the charity. Raffle tickets will also be available to purchase on the night. To reserve a table, please email cmoon.macallen@yahoo.co.uk or christinemc@tycp.org.uk. Money received by the charity is used to provide counselling, currently for 93 local children from all five of the town’s five state-maintained schools. Each student is offered a block of 10 sessions costing around £500 per block, plus group sessions where appropriate, which must be paid for as well. ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO LOCK YOUR UPVC DOOR? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Little Theatre

SEASON’S GREETINGS By Alan Ayckbourn

Friday 2nd - Saturday 10th December (No performance Wednesday 7th) Christmas is just over the horizon – whether we like it or not! – and Seaford Little Theatre is already well into the annual festivities. The production this December is to be Alan Ayckbourn’s much loved Season’s Greetings, a very funny and at times pointed romp through one family’s jolly get-together, with sundry relatives and friends adding to the general stress as everyone strives to have the expected wonderful time. Along with some brilliant dialogue, the show features a superb live puppet theatre which is sure to delight our audiences. Seaford Little Theatre’s talented actors are past masters at this type of comedy, and their choice this time is both hilarious and very well written. A sure winner! The show follows the usual format of evening performances

(starting at 7.45pm), one matinée on the first Saturday (starting at 2.30pm. on December 3rd when there is no evening performance) and no Sunday performance. Please note in addition that this time there will be no performance on Wednesday 7th December. We all need a good laugh this year, and the price of tickets has been held at their present level of £9 for the tiered seats and £8 for the level seats. They can be purchased from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, or online at www.ticketsource.co.uk or www.seafordlittletheatre.co.uk Booking enquiries: 01323 897426. We look forward to seeing you in our cosy little theatre where you can buy a glass of wine as well as tea/coffee and biscuits in the welcoming coffee lounge. Photo: Angie Wright (Phyllis) and Garry Fowler (co-director and Clive) have a tipsy heart-to heart after Christmas dinner.

GARDEN COMPOST

T

The beautiful floral tributes to Queen Elizabeth were cleared with care to be composted, but how do you produce a decent compost from your garden waste? It does require a bit of effort, but its benefits far outweigh the input.

Bins usually have instructions that will advise the do’s and dont’s. No cooked food or raw meat as these will attract vermin. Grass cuttings, prunings, veg and fruit waste and annual weeds are ideal for the 50% ‘green’ waste (for nitrogen). Perennial weeds and diseased plants should be kept out. You will also need to add 50% ‘brown’ waste (for carbon), using egg boxes, cardboard tubes, shredded documents, torn up newspaper plus straw or pet bedding (check that it’s homecompostable). The other essential is air, and ideally the compost should be turned on a regular basis. Turning is not so easy with a plastic hive bin, so make sure you mix green and brown as you add the layers, especially grass cuttings, and fork as much as possible through the top to prevent compaction. Finally, be patient. It’s worth the wait.

66

November’s chill will nip plants back, so be ready to rescue those that cannot survive hard frosts. It’s recommended to lift dahlias once the foliage has been blackened by first frosts, but could the tubers be left in the ground? My neighbour leaves hers in-situ, has done for years. Heavily mulched and south facing, they always provide a glorious display. Right plant, right place? TO D

O

Large gardens can afford the space for a compost heap, for the average back garden a compost bin is a better bet, better still two bins, then one can be left to rot down while you fill the other. There are many bins available, including ‘hot bins’ for faster composting, while those with the skills can make a wooden compost box. Price and space will dictate your choice, but whatever you choose needs to get some sun. A dank, dark corner isn’t going to work.

milder weather saw a resurgence of growth as plants were refreshed by the autumn rains, and dished out a delightful display.

WHAT

My autumn borders have been especially colourful this year. Summer’s drought drooping dahlias had cowered behind a thick yew, while begonias hid from the heat beneath the pergola. A welcome return to

If you volunteer between 9.30am and 12.30am on a Wednesday (and new volunteers are very welcome), you will know that it rarely rains at that time, in the Community Garden! However, we do have exceptions. When we gardened in the wet, in late September, the polytunnel came into its own. Abdul was watering the herb cuttings while Jill was thinning out the tomato plants, as directed by Stan. Jan found a dry spot under one of our large trees, and was re-potting the nerines that a customer had donated from a congested clump in her own garden, while a robin watched over, also sheltering from the rain. The nerines were already showing buds and the flowers, when they open in the next couple of weeks, will give a fabulous pink display. Nearby, in our shady container, the Tricyrtis formosana (or Toad Lily) was in full bloom – it just shows what a bit of rain can do, even in a dark corner! On the sunny side, the Abutilon flowers were fully open, as was the towering Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’. Allison and Katie were working through the propagation section, deciding which plants were ready to be promoted to the sales table. Allison took heel cuttings from the beautiful pink oleander, in order to produce plants to sell on, here in our corner of the Crouch Gardens. The propagation section is round the outside of the polytunnel, on purpose-built

wooden shelving. Brian, Dave and Neill created these, last year. The shelves are off-set, so that both rows can be easily watered. It’s home to a handsome Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’, which is often admired. We’re hoping to create many new small plants from this single one. Despite the rain, a few customers popped in, sheltering under their umbrellas. The sales counter was offering apples, tomatoes and courgettes. Some of the outdoor tomatoes had been planted by children from the Charlie Bear’s Nursery, who make monthly visits. If you know of a group who would like to use the garden as a resource, let us know. As you read this, we may well have a harvest of Physalis fruit, otherwise known as Cape Gooseberry. They have also flourished in our hot, dry summer, and are recommended as a ‘super food’ to eat in fruit salad, or to use as a pretty garnish on a dessert. In the tea break, taken in the cosy classroom, Neill told us about joining the Starlight Walk in Eastbourne, in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice, which he walked in memory of his dad. We are a mixture of experienced gardeners and keen learners, and James, who has been involved in the garden from its inception, was delighted to see the return of the Sternbergia lutea, which to the uninitiated looks like a (very early!) daffodil. In fact, its star-like flower will give pleasure all winter. Come and visit us, or have a taster as a volunteer, in Seaford’s best kept secret garden! The Garden Team Photos from top: Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’; a robin watching over; Physalis, or Cape Gooseberry; Tricyrtis formosana or Toad Lily; Abutilon; Sternbergia lutea.

MINI GARDEN PARTY SUCCESS

of work we had much pleasure in singing Happy Birthday, and cutting a lovely cake donated by a local eatery, Pomegranate. Our thanks go to all those people who supported the event in any way, donated raffle and tombola prizes, and of course those folk that came along on the day. Watch this space for next year. Once again, the sun shone in Seaford for our 16th garden party, this time promoted as a mini because we had moved house, we weren’t quite sure how it would work with a smaller garden, less seating capacity etc, but with our usual team of helpers the day went with a swing. The event started at 11am with guests arriving until 4pm. They were entertained by the local sing-along group Hi Tyme in the morning and by the Seaford Silver Band’s quintet in the afternoon. It really was a lovely day with delicious refreshments, and our usual super raffle and tombola. We are pleased to say that we raised in excess of £2,500, which will be shared between Mary’s Meals and the urology department at the Eastbourne District General Hospital. As Mary’s Meals is celebrating their 20th year

DRIFTWOOD GARDEN FUNDRAISING RESULTS FOR 2022 Bishopstone garden owner, Geoff Stonebanks, has been raising money for charity, notably, Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Garden Scheme, since 2009. The bulk of the money has been raised through the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, which he has, single-handedly, organised since 2012. Geoff tells us he has now made the very difficult decision that this years’ Macmillan Coastal Trail was the final one. He celebrates his 70th birthday next year, and with his failing knees, feels he needs to relinquish some of his commitments in order ease his workload and to focus more on his own plot. That said, he has still had a busy year. Geoff said: ‘I made the decision not to have public days for the National Garden Scheme this summer and feared visitor numbers would inevitably decline and thus charity fundraising.’ Nonetheless, he has seen over 700 visitors to Driftwood through June, July and August, 84 through the National Garden Scheme, 234 during the final trail weekend and over 400, who saw the garden either through the BBC Gardeners’ World 2-for-1 scheme or booked having read the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor. Geoff tells us ‘The net effect of so many people ringing to arrange to see Driftwood has meant another record year of charity fundraising. Last year we raised £14,900 with several public days included and have still managed £12,231 this year, having relied solely on private visits.’ More importantly, the visitors have been very kind with their reviews on Trip Advisor, with over 30 new, five-star comments this summer alone, bringing the total to over 170. One of Geoff favourites was this, written by Barbara on 14th June: ‘There’s a stillness in the garden that restores the soul, yet there’s a vibrance and brilliance that is enthralling too. Geoff greeted us and explained about the garden and its history, he was on hand to answer any questions and let us wander around to hearts content. This is how you feel as you spend time in the garden – content. Tea and cake were great too. The way Geoff has brought this garden to life

is amazing, and the money he is raising for charity is inspiring. The visit was a joy, thank you so much Geoff.’ Those who visited the garden this summer will have seen the new sunken garden, which has gone down a storm with new and returning guests. Don’t miss a visit in 2023 to see what Geoff is doing with the pond area over the winter months. The aim is to create an easier environment to look after as he gets older, and, more importantly, incorporate plants that are more drought tolerant. The garden will open from 1st June through until 11th August next year, raising money for both the National Garden Scheme and Macmillan Cancer support again. Follow the work being undertaken this winter at www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk.

Last Minute Artists With Christmas gift buying very much in mind, Last Minute Artists will be at the Crypt Gallery in Church Street in good time to avert last minute panics. ‘ …and the wee donkey’ will be getting you in the yule tide spirit with an exhibition that runs from Wednesday 2nd November until Sunday 6th November. For sale will be a wide variety of arts and crafts from fine paintings and prints to ceramics, textiles and mosaics, along with a great collection of cards and Christmas stocking ideas. At the time of writing – this is Last Minute Artists after all – 12 exhibitors were set to take part, with more in the offing, so you’ll be sure to see your favourites. Among them will be Lynn Beck, whose passion for colour when portraying local landscapes in acrylics

is well known Palo Almond, whose understated thoughtful work was so popular at LMA’s summer show at South Hill Barn; Robin Shell with covetable wall hangings and silks; and Linda Wells with her felted landscapes. Sue Casebourne, who designed the show’s poster, will be showing her delightful felted animals, including that wee donkey of course; Geraldine Edmonds will have an appealing display of her quirky animals in cards and as gift ideas; Nigel Goss will be showing his emotive and fun creations, Sally-Mae Joseph has been busy making a selection of her curvily different ceramics; and Sarah Gregson will have everything from calendars to notepads, based on her iconic takes on local scenes. ‘…and the wee donkey’ is open daily from 10am until 4pm, entry free.

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD At our most recent meeting we had a presentation from Adam Cowley, Proprietor of Harley House Gin, based in Seaford. Adam explained how he had begun his working life as a carpenter, specialising in spiral staircases. As a diversion, his hobby was distilling: he had made a still, and then learnt the craft of distillery, basically by trial-and-error, often at midnight at the bottom of the garden, (you may have wondered where the phrase ‘moonshine’ came from!). He tried the results out on a few brave friends, and they were very complimentary. On this basis Adam decided, in 2017, to turn his hobby into a business. He applied for a licence (in fact you need 12!) and launched Sussex Pure Gin at an event at Southover Grange, Lewes. Adam sold his entire stock, and although the range of gins on offer has increased significantly, Sussex Pure Gin remains their signature product.

Harley House is unusual in that they produce their own alcohol: most of their competitors buy the alcohol from commercial suppliers. The base for the gin is cane sugar, and pure water sourced from a bore hole near Alfriston. The fermented product is passed through a column still, with juniper berries contained at the head of the still. The distinctive flavours are extracted by the hot alcoholic vapours passing through. The resulting liquid has a very high alcoholic content (as much as 96%). It is then watered down, and can be flavoured by a whole range of botanicals and spices, to give the wide range of products in the Harley House range. All the fruits and berries used in their gin are picked on a farm near Alfriston. Adam is proud of the fact that all the flavourings are natural; no artificial products are used. He is particularly keen to use differing berries which are found in the same vicinity: ‘what grows together goes together’ is Adam’s philosophy. Apart from the Sussex Pure Gin, the range also includes Honeysuckle & Hibiscus, Rhubarb & Ginger, Raspberry & Elderflower, and the award winning Hedgerow Gin. Adam pointed out that there are many legal requirements in the distillation of gin, with inspections by Customs & Excise at each stage. There is significant duty payable on the gin, unfortunately at the point of bottling, not selling. After Adam’s presentation, members were able to sample many products from the Harley House range, and went on their way rejoicing. The Probus Club of Seaford is aimed at retired or semi-retired gentlemen living in Seaford and surrounding areas. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, at 12.15pm at Seaford Golf Club, Firle Road, for a two-course meal followed by a speaker. For further details, please contact the Secretary, Gavin, on (01323) 893760.

SEAHAVEN HARD OF HEARING CLUB On Tuesday 20th Sept 2022 members of the Committee along with the lip-reading tutor and Harley the hearing dog, went live on Seahaven FM on Len Fisher’s programme, Community People. We were able to explain to the hearing community how deafness creates isolation both within the family and in the outside world. One member expressed her frustration with places where a hearing loop was installed, where the was a lack of knowledge on how they work. This happens in important areas like doctors’ reception areas, banks, dentists surgeries, shops etc. In fact a lot of places that display a hearing loop sign do not seem to understand how they work. The lip-reading tutor spoke about the use of personal hearing loops and the advantages these can have to the deaf community. The tutor also explained what a Hearing Dog does and how they significantly help deaf people. We also discussed how we coped (or not) during COVID, with the frustration of people wearing masks and not being able to read their lips or their facial expressions, and how clear visors were more helpful. Jayne Marshall Photos: Committee members, the lip-reading tutor and Harley the Hearing Dog with Len Fisher at Seahaven FM; Paul Green with Chair of Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club, Jayne Marshall.

How good would you be on a Jury of a murder case? This was the question put to us by our speaker, Paul Green. His talk on Sussex Murders kept us all enthralled. He started by telling us of the murder of Celia Holloway, who was killed by her bigamist husband, John Holloway in 1831. He strangled her in Margaret Street in Brighton, then cut off her head and arms and threw them into the privy. Her torso he put in a trunk and wheelbarrowed to Lovers Walk, where he buried her. She was discovered on 25th July 1831. Thousands of people helped in the search for the rest of her body. Because she had been found, Holloway went to the police and said his wife had gone missing. The police searched the area around Margaret Street and because of the smell, found the body parts and arrested him. He confessed on 27th August, was taken to Court and found guilty of wilful murder. He was hung on 21st December at Horsham, where crowds turned out to watch. How we wish justice was so quick today. Paul then took on the role of Judge and we were the Jury. He gave us two actual cases and read some of the final prosecution and defendant’s reports, and we asked questions. In the first case, two thirds of us got it wrong. In the second case, only one person got it right. Just as well we are all over the age for Jury service today! Tea and raffle followed, and names were taken for those wanting to go to the Little Theatre. The lip-reading classes are going well and we are learning of The Royal Mint. The final class for this term was on 11th October. The new class will start on 1st November. New members are welcome. Contact Pauline on 01323 895216 or white-c7@sky.com. Pauline White

LATE NIGHT SIGNS THAT MAY SIGNAL DEMENTIA Retirement can be a blissful release from the stresses and strains of work and responsibility, whether to your work colleagues, your family or yourself. It is also a time of great change and readjustment to a new and potentially very exciting time of fresh challenges and pursuits, as well as long-put-off dreams finally realised. Research by Dementia UK has concluded that whilst we are also at an advancing age, personality changes after people retire could signal the early presence of dementia. Spotting the symptoms early on can be key to getting the best treatment for the condition, which is affecting more and more people as the country’s population lives longer. Different forms of dementia have distinct symptoms. One recognised sign is when retired people get up in the middle of the night thinking they must go to work. Difficulty understanding time and place is a tell-tale sign that the person may be developing dementia. Another sign is an unexplained loss of interest in things the person used to enjoy. Becoming forgetful, getting lost in places that should be familiar, and having trouble holding onto fresh information are also signs the brain is beginning to fade. Mood swings, anxiety and depression are also among the things to look out for. Dementia can take various forms, of which Alzheimer’s is only one. Different forms of dementia have distinct symptoms, which can help to identify them. For example, where there are mood changes but no memory loss it can be a sign of someone developing Lewy body dementia.

Advertising Feature

Are you at risk? There is no one cause for all types of dementia and scientific understanding is incomplete, but there are things we can all do to reduce our risk. The best way to prevent dementia, according to Race Against Dementia, is learning. Higher and longer lasting education is proven to improve cognitive performance. In midlife, symptoms including hearing loss, high blood pressure, obesity and a high alcohol intake are risks that can be tackled early. Limiting your alcohol intake to no more than 21 units a week; reducing smoking and physical inactivity, and taking steps to avoid social isolation can all act to reduce the risks. Despite these risk factors, the positive message to get across is that these are all factors that, for the most part, can be controlled to an extent and, even if you’re in midlife, you still have time to change and adapt. Exercise. Eat a balanced diet. Keep a healthy weight. Control your blood sugar levels. Lower your alcohol intake. Reduce cholesterol. Stop smoking… All of these things will work together to reduce your blood pressure to a healthy and sustainable level, and act against the risk factors that could lead to dementia. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

SEAFORD ROTARY

Young Cricketer of the Year 2022

Four years ago, in 2018, we were approached by Seaford Cricket Club, asking if we could support a new award, Young Cricketer of the Year for three years. This award was intended, not for the best cricket player, but for the young cricketer who had contributed most to the club and to the community. The award was a trophy (a shield) plus cash to pay for his or her membership for a year and some cricket equipment. The three-year period finished in 2021 (there was no award in 2020 due to COVID), and so we were asked again if we would sponsor the award for a further three years, including the purchase of a new trophy, which we agreed to do. President Ann Reed, accompanied by the Chair of Youth Services, Paul Vaesen, therefore went to Seaford Cricket Club at The Salts on Friday 2nd September to present our award as part of the Cricket Club’s annual awards evening. Before the award was presented, Paul Vaesen said a few words about the many ways that Seaford Rotary runs projects to encourage youngsters in the town, and drew special attention to a new award, the Philip Moorey Award for Young Citizen of the Year. This year there were two recipients, a boy and a girl, Riley Street and Elpi Hussain, both of whom had contributed

greatly to the Cricket Club, and President Ann congratulated them both for what they had achieved.

Global Scholars Seaford Rotary as host club welcomed two Japanese students, Takayuki Matsumoto and Chihiro Imazu to Seaford. Both students have been awarded scholarships by The Rotary Foundation for their travel, accommodation, and university tuition costs. Since The Rotary Foundation was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than 4 billion dollars on life-changing sustainable projects. The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary Members to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty, and to help achieve this, offers scholarships for College Graduates and Professionals to study peace and conflict resolution. Seaford Rotarians are pleased to be able to play their part in these wider international activities by Rotary, and they will be hosting and supporting Takayuki and Chihiro during their year of study. Takayuki (known as Taka) will be studying at the University of Sussex to complete an MA in Migration and Global Development. Chihiro will be studying at the University of Sussex, School of Global Studies, to obtain an MA in Conflict, Security and Development The role of the host Club is to enable the Foundation Students to experience local culture and understand more of the environment in which they are studying. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information, please email contact@seafordrotary.org.uk or contact us at www.seafordrotary.org.uk. Having said goodbye to the summer months, our autumn programme is now upon us. Members will be watching the results of filming which took place in St Luke’s Church in the late spring. Two violinists played music especially composed for a duet. It was very melodious, but challenging to film, so the finished articles should be entertaining to watch and hear. In recent weeks, members have been using a very short script with the intention in one of our autumn meetings to recreate ‘a film studio experience’. Hence we are on the lookout for a male and female in their 20s to do a bit of acting for us (see contact details below). Our AGM will be on 19th October when plans for 2023 will be discussed, and made. With a mix of members’ films due to be seen in November, the year will conclude with an afternoon tea, courtesy of our Treasurer James and his wife Kate’s hospitality.

Seaford Museum

GUESTS OF THE NATION

Dr Sally White of Seaford Museum, has researched a little-known part of the First World War. Here, she offers a glimpse into the past. Some years ago, I became interested in the work done by civilian volunteers during the First World War. During my research I was staggered to learn that, in 1914, about 1 in 16 of the Belgian population left their country. Vast numbers went to France or the Netherlands, where many were housed in redundant greenhouses. A quarter of a million made their way across the Channel to the United Kingdom. A few managed to bring money with them, but most were destitute and needed huge amounts of support. The government was not enthusiastic about letting them

come to this country and for some time refused to spend anything on their support, saying that the work and fund-raising should be done by volunteers. Thousands of committees were set up nationwide to welcome the refugees, house them and, eventually, to help them support themselves. Caring for them was complicated by the fact that some Belgians spoke French while others spoke Flemish, and the two groups were not keen on co-operating with each other. Like most counties, Sussex welcomed a number of groups of refugees. Communities of all sizes were eager to commit to welcoming refugees and worked hard to provide for their needs. However, once people realised that the War was not going to be over by Christmas and that most of the refugees were not only staying but needed on-going support, things became more difficult. There were groups of refugees from a number of other countries who also needed help, and tens of thousands of charities raising money for every imaginable cause including collecting cigarettes for soldiers. Belgian refugees became less ‘fashionable’ and raising sufficient money for their care was not easy, even after the government realised it had to help with some expenses. Over time there was resentment when some refugees refused to take jobs or, if they did work, did not see why their pay should go towards their expenses. There was also anger at the young Belgian men who refused to join the Belgian Army when British men were fighting and dying over there. What nobody seems to have considered was the depth of trauma that some of them had suffered, and quite a few really needed specialised care. At the end of the War the vast majority of refugees were keen to go back to Belgium but a number married and settled here.

Why it Pays to Think Long-Term About Your Home Crisis. Turmoil. Unprecedented. These were words rarely used pre-pandemic. Now they’ve become staples of our nation’s news coverage. At the time of writing this article (the first week of October), the economy and, to a degree, the property markets are spooked. We’re having conversations with plenty of concerned buyers and sellers. It would be disingenuous to say otherwise. It’s highly likely it will become harder to sell or buy a home over the next three to six months. Harder, but not impossible.

Why? Because when you choose an agent based on their expertise, support, marketing and negotiating skill and ability, rather than a cutprice fee and fingers-crossed approach, you give yourself the best possible chance of success.

The big picture According to industry data, most people stay in their homes for 12 – 20 years. So, it’s highly likely that your property will be significantly more valuable in the future if you buy it now, even with all the news swirling around the housing market. And let’s not forget the lessons Lockdown taught many of us: that life is for living and not something we can put on hold.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

If you want a new property or seek somewhere else to call home, start thinking five to ten years down the line from now. Remember, a home is much, much more than a financial asset. It’s the place your children grow up; where you grow the relationships that really matters; where you make memories that last a lifetime – not just an economic cycle. At Newberry Tully, we’ve been serving Seaford since 1987, so we think we’ve shown we are in it for the long run. We’ve helped home sellers, and buyers navigate through all kinds of market conditions. And we’ll continue to do so. Thanks for reading,

Stephen and Andrew

Swimming Squidz Swimming Squidz is a local, family run business, built from the passion of ensuring children’s safety in and around the water. We have the most fabulous private heated pool, that is bright and spacious. This gives us the ability to grow every child’s learning and stretch their abilities. Teaching can begin with us from a few weeks old to the age of 11. From an early start in the water, a baby can start to learn how to float on their back (an essential life-saving skill), turning to hold on, learning how to breathe in and around the water and, equally important, to start their love of water and gain confidence and respect in the water. All lessons for Mini Squidz are based around learning through fun (as it starts their understanding that water is great to be around) with different themes and toys each week. The older a child becomes the more a fear of water often builds within them (before starting lessons) this can be difficult to break without the best nurturing and guidance. Our aim is for that fear to NOT start in the first place, but for the child to have their passion for swimming already in place! Mini Squidz start from birth (the youngest I have taught is 2 weeks old) to school age, and they can move forward and progress to Big Squidz (ages 4 to 11).

Some find certain strokes tricky due to the co-ordination involved, so really it is important to ensure they do not feel defeated, but that they feel a real sense of achievement, helping them to correct the movement whilst instilling a sense of achievement in them. Coming into the ‘Spooky Season’, Big and Mini Squidz will have some amazing sessions using an alternative ‘float’…a pumpkin! The kids ALL love the pumpkin floats – they are blown away that a heavy pumpkin can be used so easily as a float! It causes a lot of fun and laughter and they love giving it a go! Apple bobbing is also included. What are they learning with apple bobbing? I hear you say …Firstly, how to use their bubbles through their nose (A great way to do bubbles when swimming) secondly, how much fun it can all be. Children learn through loving what they do and having a lot of fun whilst doing it! Join Swimming Squidz now to give your children an amazing experience in the water. Start them as early and as young as you can – it is absolutely the way forward.

Feel free to email: tara@swimmingsquidz.co.uk

Big Squidz also learn through fun, but with structure firmly in place, so they gain a solid technical base. They learn the strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and dolphin/butterfly) from the basic skills to the far more technical points. Included in that is gaining their lateral and bi-lateral breathing technique which is essential.

A BIG THANK YOU TO SEAFORD BUSINESS COMMUNITY Matt Wood of Pelham Barbers and Julia Clark of Haven Therapies have gone into business together and wish to thank the businesses of Seaford that offered huge support.

to Simon of Blainies, with whom he worked until he was able to open his new Barbers.

Back in March all the businesses in Talland Parade were ordered to close due to movement in our now infamous scaffolding, as a result of Storm Eunice. This was devastating for all the businesses, but out of a dreadful situation, two individuals found new premises and have opened recently. Matt would like to thank both Jason’s Barbers for their offer of chairs as soon as the shops were shut and also Photos from top: Inside Pelham Barbers; Matt Wood and Julia Clark outside their new premises in Pelham Yard; Haven Therapies treatment room and waiting room.

Seaford Tapping & Reiki Tapping

REIKI

Based on acupuncture, it uses a system of tapping on meridian points, to release emotional and psychological blocks that are held in the body.

When our life force energy is low, we are more likely to get sick and feel stressed.

(Emotional Freedom Technique) combines ancient healing traditions and modern psychology.

It can help with: l Anxiety l Depression l Body issues l Relationship issues l Major life events This body-psychology technique is a way to release past / present issues and emotions so you can move on with your life. NOVEMBER ‘TIME TO REST’ As the crisp mornings are upon us, November is a time to rest and reflect, and gather energy for when the light returns in spring. As autumn let’s go and leaves turn to a gorgeous array of yellows, oranges and reds November is a time to allow yourself to rest and enjoy the harvest many gardens have provided. It’s a time when the earth rests and retreats before the cycle of life begins again. It’s time to slow down and do the final jobs in the garden before snuggling down as December and Christmas approaches, a time to holistically look after yourself. The deciduous trees have become dormant, saving their energy for spring, but instead of sweeping up these leaves and taking them as waste, they are an excellent source to condition your soil. By piling them up in a corner and letting them slowly decompose for spring you are generating a great additive to soil that stops a valuable resource from reaching landfill. It also allows a home for our much-depleted insect population. It is also a great time to chop and drop – most green leaf (apart from bindweed) can simply be chopped where it is and left around your plant as mulch. Mulching your trees and plants is also crucial in looking after them throughout the winter and preventing unwanted growth come springtime. It ends up enriching the soil, provides a protective covering, prevents evaporation and erosion of our precious soils. Mulch can be straw, hay, forage chopped from your garden, wood shavings and shredded hardwood. Just as we make time for our earth and plants to rest, then it is also important to make time for ourselves to rest. Autumn with its harvest follows busy summer months collecting and storing the fruits of our labours. Just as the earth rests in winter then so should we. For centuries winter was the time of deep rest – hundreds of years ago time spent with community sharing stories around the fire, weaving tales whilst making traditional crafts. In our modern day and with the pressures of everyday living increasing then we must look to

community and family to nest with, eat food with and share stories, dreams and ambitions. With our current government doing little to ensure our needs are met, it’s time to look to community and within ourselves to find warmth, food and understanding. Locally we are blessed with amazing community groups, all providing food and a space in which we can grow. Find a local group/place that will help you during the dark nights and cold days, where you can go and be heard and feel warmth in your heart. Join a group, get involved, it’s good for the soul when we give, as we always receive far more than we have given. And the winter evenings don’t seem so long when we have been occupied in the day. It’s a time to nourish our souls and bodies with community, relaxation and reflection. Time to make plans for the new year, what do we want to grow, in ourselves, our community and our garden. Winter is a time for rest and renewal, much like natures cycles and patterns. We seem to think we must be productive all the time, our culture thrives on the need to work hard at all costs, yet this is exhausting and counterproductive. In looking to nature, we see this period of hibernation essential for productivity come spring. So get out and enjoy the light in the day to boost your mental wellbeing and curl up and look after yourself in the dark evenings and rest. It’s time to take responsibility for our own wellbeing, look to nature and rest with her. Miriam Thundercliffe

Seaford u3a News

The u3a is in full swing now, with members able to enjoy groups either in members’ houses or in larger venues, outings, talks at the Downs and pub lunches which take place once a month. One of the groups which has attracted several members is entitled ‘Climate Change – where do we go from here?’ This follows on from the Climate Change course run by the same group leader last year when the basic science of climate change was discussed. Participating members discussed Technological solutions, Citizen Power with particular reference to the UK Climate Assembly, Education and Consent and then finally Climate Change diplomacy. Some useful videos were used to stimulate discussion and introduce new ideas. Seaford u3a’s group was timed to lead up to COP27, the 27th United Nations sponsored Conference of the Parties (COPs) due to start on 7th November in Egypt. These yearly meetings, involving 197 countries, aim to reach agreement to limit the rise in global temperatures to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

By contrast, some u3a members enjoyed an outing to Buckingham Palace just three days before the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll. The outings organiser describes being mesmerized by the grandeur of the State Rooms, the jewellery collection of fabulous tiaras, necklaces and bracelets and the numerous priceless paintings, ornaments and furniture. They saw paintings by Vermeer, Canaletto, Rembrandt and a host of other famous artists. They walked round the gardens and found the whole visit a memorable experience. The u3a really does have something for everyone. If it doesn’t, by any chance, then it is quite possible that a member will start something. There are new groups in the offing – possibly one on British Sign Language, certainly a new Art Group and maybe others to follow. New talks follow, some at the Tea Parties which have started again and one group of talks on India. For all these activities, except for the coffee mornings, membership is necessary at a cost of £10 per year. There is usually a small extra charge for talks and groups held in hired venues to cover costs. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com, sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Photo: Buckingham Palace from the gardens.

Nationally the u3a, under the guidance of the National Subject Advisor and her team has taken a major step forward in the last few months with the creation of a u3a Climate Change Toolkit. U3. Around the country, u3a have contributed expertise, knowledge and recommendations. The web site is available to all at u3asites.org.uk/climate-change/home and the Resources page is a treasure trove of information about climate change. More than 100 local u3as around the country are members of the National u3a’s Climate Change Network, including Seaford u3a.
