Supporting humanitarian efforts for Ukraine

On Friday 12th March, volunteers who helped Seaford Rotary collect a record sum by accompanying Santa’s sleigh through the streets of Seaford in December, were welcomed at the Crossways Church, Blatchington Hall to a thank you buffet meal. President Elect Ann Reed welcomed the guests and introduced members of Seaford Rotary who chair or represented the Club’s committees – John Owen: Membership, Paul Vaesen: Youth Services, Bill Pierce: International, Dave Argent: Fundraising and Clive Livingstone: Community Service – before inviting the guests to help themselves to drinks and food. Rotary District has set up a Crowdfunding Page in aid of Ukraine through which anyone – including the public – can make a donation for which the Rotary will match fund the first £10,000. Every penny donated goes directly to those in need. The weblink is: www.rotaryhelpsukraine.com. Donations from this fund are sent to: • Romania/Moldova towards supplies and emergency accommodation, including for protein to feed 5,000 refugees for a week in Moldova; • International Rotary Fellowship of Health Professionals (who are co-ordinating medical supplies into Ukraine) towards medical supplies; • Shelterbox towards their efforts in Moldova and Poland; • Poland towards accommodation and supplies provision; • Ukraine District for urgent supplies for the displaced persons inside west Ukraine. Rotary is also working to help the displaced people arriving daily in the countries surrounding Ukraine, and has volunteers at the borders of Ukraine with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova 24 hours each day. Donations go directly to trusted colleagues in the Ukraine and all its bordering countries. They can identify the real needs of refugees in each country – medicines (especially dressings and pain killers for adults and children), warm socks, thermals, food, bullet-proof vests, blankets, sleeping bags, first aid kits, dressings, hygiene products, toiletries, sanitary towels, nappies, wet wipes, torches, batteries, candles, laptops, phones, tablets with good batteries and much more.
