Trees for Seaford

PRuNiNG, WATCHiNG AND AN AWARD!

Throughout the cold weather we have continued to care for our trees. After the final planting of new trees in mid-January in Tudor Close and Westdown Road, we switched our attention to pruning trees that had been planted in previous years.

We had a very instructive (albeit bitterly cold) session with Keith Sacre in February who taught a group of approximately 20 stalwarts, the basic principles of pruning street trees – identifying the leaders and then taking out growth with the potential to cause problems in future, and generally creating a pleasing symmetry to the tree. We have had several forays to prune trees in the pruning ‘window’, while the weather has been reasonably cool, and have had to tackle a few tangles that had got a bit out of hand! Hopefully most of our trees have now received attention.

Mega thanks to Karen Hall from Friends of Sutton Downs! who used the workshop to create an illustrated pruning guide to remind us of Keith’s instructions and which we have shared with other groups across East Sussex connected with the Queen’s Green Canopy Jubilee initiative. In relation to the latter we are also in discussion with other local groups who are hoping to plant commemorative Jubilee trees this year.

The next new push is to establish Neighbourhood Tree Watches to monitor the trees, and possibly help out with watering young trees in the first years during drought periods. If you would like to become part of

A tree monitoring group has been set up with the aim of methodically monitoring the health of all the trees we plant, to give us useful information about best practice to guide future planting.

Excitingly, we have gained a Mayor’s Award ‘for activities and initiatives to improve the natural environment around Seaford’. We are very pleased that the hard work, in particular the input of certain people, has been recognised by Seaford Town Council.
