Welcome

to the May issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. I hope you are enjoying these lovely light evenings? I certainly am, and as I write, the weather seems to be warming up, so spring is definitely in the air! Unusually this year, there is only one Bank Holiday in May, on Monday 2nd. This is due to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration, when the late May Bank Holiday which would have fallen on Monday 30th May will be moved to Thursday 2nd June, and there will be an additional Bank Holiday on Friday 3rd June – Yay! Until then, there’s plenty going on in Seaford, with local gardens opening up across East Sussex to raise funds for local charities, plus bluebell walks and open days at both Seaford Tennis Clubs and Seaford Bowling Club, along with Seaford Bowling Club’s Spring Fayre on Saturday 14th. The Last Minute Artists are popping up again at the Crypt Gallery, see page 90, whilst Gallery Uno unveils their latest collection of arts, crafts and design until 24th May (page 22). There’s a wide range of talks on various topics scheduled throughout May, whilst Seaford Music Society, Splash Point Jazz, The Corelli Ensemble and St Leonard’s Lunchtime concert will fill the air with the sound of music – details in the What’s On pages, 124 to 129. Until next time, enjoy your merry May! Fran Tegg, Editor

SWIFTS IN THE SKIES

Summer’s coming when you hear the swift...Their shrill call heralding my favourite time of year and the start of warmer days. Since my childhood I have enjoyed watching their acrobatic displays as they dart and flit about catching insects on their way.

This weekend I had the pleasure of helping to put up seven swift boxes in Newhaven and Seaford and by the time this article is published am hoping they all have swift residents! We at Greenhavens were lucky enough to have The Monday Group kindly make the swift boxes and after finding our hero of the day, Dave Boddington, he kindly put them up. Scaling scary heights Dave and the house owners found the right places for the boxes and now we await their arrival from Africa. Swifts are incredibly clever birds, finding their way each year back to their nests and leaving us once again to fly back to Africa. Rarely touching ground, they sleep, eat, and mate on the wing. Catching raindrops or skimming

surface water, they cover huge distances and their agility is far superior to many of our other bird friends. Having shared our buildings for over 2,000 years, they are on the decline as newer buildings offer no nesting sites and old buildings are often re-insulated, blocking off old nest sites. And as insect populations decline they have less food to catch. In less than 20 years a third of British Swifts have been lost – it’s a worrying figure but we can help them. Installing a swift box helps enormously in keeping our swifts returning year after year – ask your neighbours too as Swifts love nesting in colonies. Boxes can be ordered on www.swift-conservation.org and do ask for help from our fantastic local swift groups in Lewes and Seaford. Not all of us can fit a box on our houses, mine is too low, but we can all help by surveying our skies and entering sightings on the RSPB’s swiftmapper. org.uk any time you hear and see them swoop through the skies. We can also help by leaving our gardens a little wilder, allowing the insects they need to feed on grow. If we all did a little bit, it would amount to a lot in preserving our skies for swifts. So watch the skies at the beginning of May for the ‘advance guard’ who are coming to clean the nests out and prepare to bring up their young. Please do record any sightings and enjoy their acrobatic display. For me their calls are an important memory and remind me summer is coming... Martello Rotary Club

2022 Martello Half Marathon Well, the morning of 27th March dawned bright and clear, and despite a forecast of cloud it promised to be a glorious day for the fifth Seaford Martello Half Marathon. Lists had been printed, marshals briefed, signs erected, First-aiders arranged, race timers engaged, water stations set up, medals, prizes and the all-important tables loaded with runners’ sustenance at the finish. This was a case of, third time lucky as we’d had to postpone this event twice before due to Covid or other considerations. We crossed fingers (and toes) that all would be well… and the weather was turning out to be glorious! So, despite losing an hour to British Summer Time, the Martello team gathered at the Seaford Rugby Club at 7.30am (6.30am in real time!), and registration proceeded apace with runners turning up from 8am. We had a higher-than-expected number of no shows, likely due to it being Mothering Sunday, and of course the clocks going forward, meaning some would have decided to have to the extra hour in bed. However, we had enough runners for a decent race, and at 9.15am all made their way to the start line for the 9.30am start. Peter White the Seaford Town crier welcomed all to Seaford in stentorian style, and after a few words from Andy Payne, the Martello Rotary President, they were off. The race snaked out of Seaford to Bishopstone, where a long slog up the South Downs commenced. The first water station, half a mile or so from South Heighton was very welcome, then the long climb up to the aerials towering above at the top of Beddingham Hill beckoned. Some small respite enjoying the glorious views over sea and downs then another stiff climb up to Firle Beacon – at 217m the highest point on the route. Then another welcome water station at Bo Peep. Now came the long descent down the track to Bostal Bottom, along the track at the side of Seaford Golf Club, then the steep and stony track down to Bishopstone. Finally, back along

8

the road to Seaford, that final sprint along the seafront, and the finish to the cheers of the crowds. This year saw two new course records, with local lad Aaron O’Shaughnessy coming in first male at 1:22:49 (prev.1:23:36) and Cathy Beresford smashing the first female record at 1:38:35 (Previous 1:47:13), and in fact the next two female runners also broke the previous course record. So – after receiving medals, applauding the prize giving, and collecting a well-deserved flapjack, chocolate bar and banana or two, the runners returned home – hopefully to do it all again next year! Special thanks go to the people and companies that supported the Half Marathon. Their contribution was very much appreciated and enabled the event to go very well. Thank you to: Morrison’s for supplying the Bananas and the Kit Kat bars; Beth Funnel of Beth’s Kitchen & Cakery who supplied the Flap Jacks which went down very well; Mr Robert Lambert of Mr Cycles who kindly let us have the use of an Electric Bike – without it the back marker would not have been able to cycle up the hills and stay with the runners with a conventional bike; Newberry Tully Easte Agents for sponsoring and providing the trophies for the men and women; Christina Baldwin for the photographs; Seaford Bonfire Society who provided marshalls for the event, and not forgetting all the marshalls who attended at key points along the route, Phoenix First Aiders, the first aid team and finally Seaford Rugby Club who kindly allowed us to use their facilities for registration and the use of their facilities. Helpers for a Happy Home Life can sometimes need a little sorting. As we get older, it can get a little quieter – sometimes a little lonelier. This is where community comes in. Awardwinning home help company, Good Life Sorted, has that community: a team of professional Helpers that you can connect with in seconds. Thanks to an easy to use website and team of specialist advisors available on the phone, Good Life Sorted can link you to someone who lives nearby, who can commit some time to helping you for a reasonable hourly fee. You can keep on top of things at home, build a new friendship and if needed, alleviate loneliness. Everyone is handpicked, fully vetted and insured, and they are available at times to suit you.

Carla Rollings is a Helper who visits three customers in her local area. A former hairdresser with grown-up children, she has more time on her hands now and loves spending it with her customers. ‘I never expected to enjoy this as much as I do,’ she says. ‘Everyone needs something different: some lunch, a walk, a cuppa, a bit of shopping, support with technology. My hours supplement family visits and I feel I’m part of a routine that is helping my customers stay independent and happy in their own homes. They’re all fabulous company, we genuinely have a good time together.’

Good Life Sorted was inspired by founder Constantine Karampatsos’ grandmother Zoe, who stayed active and independent in her own home until she was 96, thanks to the help of her neighbour’s company and a little help with the daily chores. He says: ‘This is not nursing or personal care, this is good old fashioned company and day to day support, provided by friendly, reliable and fully vetted local people. By helping with tasks like cleaning, shopping, laundry, preparing meals and providing transport, our professional Helpers enable older people to remain happy in their own homes.’ Mandy Shrader, another Helper, adds, ‘My children are now adults and I was made redundant from my role in the hospitality industry during the Covid pandemic. Being a Helper is perfect, as it means I can work the hours I choose, help local elderly people, while earning at the same time and feeling appreciated for what I do.’

Good Life Sorted is already operating successfully across a number of regions in England and has helpers in Seaford and surrounding areas. If you, or someone you know, could do with a little extra support, they could provide the connection needed.

The Mayor supports Seaford’s Automatic External Defibrillator’ Campaign Seaford Town Council supports the town’s campaign to identify and map the town’s provision of (AED) defibrillators with vital assistance from The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed and

the Mayor’s Charity Project. The campaign set out to increase awareness about the importance and installation of defibrillators in areas that are accessible 24 hours a day and to signpost to their location. A higher survival rate post-cardiac arrest, outside of a hospital setting, is more likely among patients who receive bystander CPR combined with therapy delivered by a Heart Defibrillator within the first 3 minutes after a Cardiac Arrest. The initial scope of the project performed by Seaford Rotary was to identify and map the town’s publicly accessible defibrillators. To find out which ones were in working order, in need of repair or replacement. Seaford Town Council hopes the wider initiative of the campaign will extend the coverage to public places that currently have none readily available, As well as encouraging local businesses and groups to move defibrillators from inside to the outside of their premises, to provide additional 24/7 availability. Despite COVID, with the support from the Mayors Charity Project and Seaford Rotary, the main initiatives of the campaign are near completion. The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed is very passionate about this Charity Project. It is with great excitement that the Mayor would like to announce the imminent placement of two new externally mounted 24/7 defibrillators. One is funded by NP&S Lions for Broad Street and the other, also an exterior mounted unit, by Life Church Seaford, in Steyne Road.

12

The Mayor said: ‘It’s vital that we know where to find the nearest defibrillator (AED) and that if we are told by a 999 operator to use it, it’s in full working order. My Mayor’s charity project supported Seaford Rotary, identifying and mapping Seaford’s publicly available defibrillators and also a local volunteer’s initiative to have funds available in Seaford for defibrillator, maintenance including repairs, spares and replacement batteries. That several donors came forward offering defibrillators for parts of Seaford without any nearby was a real bonus for our town.’ As the campaign draws to a close, the initiative will continue to move forward. The information from the mapping will be linked with a new charity fund established (Seaford Defib Guardians) to accept donations in order to regularly maintain all the 24/7 accessible defibrillators in Seaford. The Rotary Club of Seaford Martello Trust Fund has agreed to hold donated funds for defibrillator maintenance and will actively encourage ongoing donations, led by volunteer Greg Anderson - ‘As a Park Runner I recognised that two of the three defibs on the Seafront were not in working order. As a local business owner, I realised the reason was because there were no funds available for replacement batteries and other maintenance costs. The cost of batteries and replacement parts not only blocked maintenance of the existing 24/7 defibs but also discouraged additional AEDs from being placed. So, I identified Martello Rotary as a charity willing to receive and hold donations as a Defib Maintenance Fund and I will now begin to encourage donations into that fund. My thanks to the Mayor for his support and encouragement, and for including my Defib Maintenance Project in his Mayor’s Defib Charity. Clive Livingston of Seaford Rotary added: ‘Seaford Rotarians have identified the sites and the condition of the 24/7 publicly available defibrillators in Seaford and we are pleased that our Mayor has supported us in this. We intend to commission and issue a map, to most households, showing these defibrillator locations. Seaford Rotary Club is also working to install signs along the

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

promenade to direct people to the nearest defibrillator. Our Rotarians have contributed their time and the Club is donating the significant funding needed for this mapping and 24/7 defibrillator signposting.’ The generosity of the Seaford community over several years has provided the town with community defibrillators. The ongoing defibrillator maintenance fund, to be held by Martello Rotary, should overcome the challenges of having funds readily available for ongoing maintenance. The kindness of donors coming forward to fill defibrillator gaps within the town will mean more people are within a life-saving distance of these important pieces of equipment. Finally, publications both online and offline and their listing with SECAMB and the British Heart Foundation will help to increase awareness of the 24/7 accessible defibrillators available to the Seaford community.

A final note, always dial 999 and let the Emergency Service Operator direct you to your nearest available defibrillator IF they recommend you use one.

Seaford u3a News Recently new members and group leaders enjoyed an afternoon tea at the Con Club when questions were asked and answered about Seaford u3a. The chairman took the opportunity to thank the committee and group leaders who help to make the u3a enjoyable. It was very successful and enjoyed by all. The Con Club at Crouch Lane, Seaford, is also the venue for the monthly coffee morning – now free! This time it will be on Wednesday 18th May from 10am to noon, when coffee, light snacks and friendly chat will be dispensed. This is open to non-members as well as to members, and is often the first introduction to u3a for nonmembers. One of the attractions of Seaford u3a is the outings, and the organiser writes about the latest one to the company that makes costumes for Strictly Come Dancing. She said: ‘The coach deposited us in Croydon for the much anticipated Behind The Seams tour of DSI, the company that makes costumes for anything dance, or show biz-related. We met Carole who dazzled us with facts, figures and stories, plus a glass of champagne before our tour to see the production process. Supplying the costumes for Strictly Come Dancing is only a small portion of their turnover; they make costumes for worldwide dance competitions, films, shows and cruise ship productions. ‘We saw swatches in different colours and fabrics from voiles to velvet, saw boxes of fringing, rolls of laces, ribbons, beads and feathers, all sourced from abroad because of scarcity of UK manufacturing capability. Each fabric order can cost up to £10,000 and is ordered from abroad six months ahead. ‘Tailor dummies are covered in bubble wrap which can be removed as contestants lose weight or tone up, and each outfit is sewn onto a stretchy leotard, which also helps with size fluctuations. Vicky Gill, the designer, meets each contestant beforehand to discuss their preferred styles, and although they can’t choose what they wear, the aim is to help them feel comfortable. We were impressed by the embellisher who fixes the rhinestones onto the dresses. Packets contain 10 gross – it takes 50 minutes to glue one packet, with up to eight packets on a dress. He made it look so easy,

18

forming the patterns with dots of glue then attaching the stones with a sticky bees wax tipped pencil, turning the ordinary into the stunning. ‘We saw eight layers of fabric being cut at once by a dangerous looking electric blade for a film outfit, but we were not allowed to take photos of the design – top secret! We saw dance trousers being cut using huge scissors and a revolving blade. We peeped into many workshops, rooms with sewing machines, fabric and accessory storerooms with rolls and boxes, some tidy, some not... ‘It was clear it was more than “the place that makes pretty dresses”. DSI is a complex, global operation, which had taken us on a journey via design, styling, making, embellishing, along with astounding skills in logistics, storage and organisation, ending with racks of the sensational, stunning, shimmery dresses. Sadly no souvenirs, much as we coveted one of those gorgeous gowns!’ For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. Seaford Photographic Society You don’t necessarily need expensive camera equipment to take good photos, and every year we give our members the opportunity to demonstrate this with a competition just for phones or tablets. This is a fun, informal competition where everybody sends in their images and club members vote for their favourites. The winner this year was Adrian Bishop, with Janice Hewitt and Thelma Long taking second and third places respectively. The meeting finished earlier than usual, so we all sat around for an hour or so chatting about photography. The penultimate round of the second PDI league for Projected Digital Images was judged via Zoom by Jonathan Vaines AFIAP CPAGB LRPS. In the standard league A Bee on Fatsia by Stephen Day (photo left) was the only 20 scoring image and there were only two 20s in the advanced league: Glyndebourne Organ Room by Chris Dawson (photo right) and ‘White Feathers’ by Kevin Smoker (photo below). At the end of the evening the overall league scores were incredibly close. In the advanced group Colin Mitchell and Simon Watkins were in joint first place with 97, and Anna-Marie Armstrong and Chris Dawson both just one point behind, with 96.

20

So, there was all to play for going into the final round the following week. This one was judged by David Eastley LRPS, and it was a pleasure to welcome David back to Seaford in person this time. As always, he did an excellent job with the judging, carefully explaining what he liked about each image, but with plenty of suggestions about how they could be improved. The main point of the competitions is to listen to the critiques and apply them to one’s own work. This was a good introduction to the club for new member Maria, who was attending for the first time. All the high-scoring photos this week were nature themed, for which the club is getting a good reputation. Changing Colour by Stephen Day (photo top) scored a 20 in the standard league, as did Stephen Day’s gliding seagull image. In the advanced league Simon Rigby’s unusual Egret Feet (photo second from top) did well, along with Anna-Marie Armstrong’s blue tit and reflection. The final league scores, together with the Photographer of the Year winner, will be announced at the awards evening at the end of May. We had an informal Show and Tell evening to end the month. This started with some members doing a ‘before and after’ chat about one of their images, showing it unprocessed, then after editing. There were some good examples of how a bit of post-processing can transform an image into something with much more impact. We also tried to answer some specific editing queries that people had. The evening finished with our chairman giving a short talk on focus stacking. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and how you can join us.

UNO22: Five – A Selection of Art, Craft & Design for the Upcoming Art Festival Season Gallery Uno, 14a High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Summer opening times: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays midday – 3pm (Closed Wednesdays), from Thursday 28th April until Tuesday 24th May. For artists and makers across Sussex, this is a special time of year as they gear up for the forthcoming May Festival. At Gallery Uno we too will be brushing off the last few cobwebs of winter as we also celebrate the upcoming festival season with another jam-packed display of art, design and crafts. Like many of our exhibitors John Alden, our member under the spotlight this month, has been an ardent supporter of various local art festivals, opening his own home to display his delightfully humorous automata sculptures on many occasions.

JOHN ALDEN Automata and Toy Maker John’s life has had many twists and turns. Born in 1935 in South London, his fragmented and basic wartime education lacked any art content. Fortunately, both his parents skilfully made and painted toys, which John eagerly took part in. On leaving technical college, where he greatly enjoyed technical drawing, wood and metal work, he started a five-year apprenticeship as a Chartered Engineer and then worked as a consultant for many large companies such as Legal and General, and Potterton Boilers. He would address his clients with slideshows which he illustrated with his own work. Spotted by an editor of

22

a trade magazine, he was invited to contribute a regular cartoon feature in his magazine. Pretty soon he was producing work for several magazines in the Maclaren Publishing group. During this time he played guitar in a skiffle group gigging around London’s West End and was instrumental in organising sales of soft toys made from found materials to raise funds for the scouts. In the1970s he opened an antiques shop, where he discovered the rapidly expanding market in doll’s houses. Soon after he rekindled his love of hand-made toys by making miniatures which he sold to a number shops and at Camden Lock market. One of his main outlets was The Singing Tree; a famous shop in Kings Road Chelsea, supplying them until they retired in 2004. Now without an important customer to supply he began looking for alternative ways to express his newly found creativity, discovering initially a course on automata at West Dean College. Having fallen in love with this newly found world of art and craft, he duly signed up for courses on making dolls house furniture, botanical drawing, wood turning, pottery, puppetry and calligraphy. It was at this time he started to open his house to show his work during the Brighton Festival and subsequently other houses and galleries around the county. He recalls his most memorable exhibitions were at the OXO gallery on the south bank of the Thames and the First Gallery, Southampton. There he met Mary Turner, the maker of the Thunderbirds puppet Lady Penelope, and showed work as one of the top 40 makers in the world alongside luminaries such as Paul Spooner and Keith Newstead. John has also been a storyteller as part of the Guesthouse Storytelling group, until he was elected to join the British Toymakers Guild. He is also a member of the Newhaven Art Club.

The House on the Cliff – a special showing Local independent film-maker Chris Conil has made a film of Lynn Lawson’s book, The House On The Cliff, being the story of the building that once stood on the cliff above Splash Point. Built as a private home for a Mrs Fleming Baxter in Victorian times and rather disarmingly named Cliff Cottage, the large and imposing house stood alone on the route up to Seaford Head, and to add privacy a brick retaining wall was added to the foot of the grounds. The house was demolished in the 1960s and only the imposing gateway and the remnants of the brick wall remain. In the 1930s, the large private house had been transformed into holiday flats for the Friendship Holiday Association, an organisation enabling single women, often widows from World War 1 to enjoy holidays away and meet new friends. The FHA was sometimes referred to as ‘Find A Husband Association’!

Clock Restoration Service

After World War II, the building reopened as the Splash Point Hotel. Sadly, as foreign travel became cheaper, demand for seaside holidays in England waned and the hotel eventually closed. Lynn Lawson, who lives close by, was fascinated by the building, and her painstaking research traces its story as a private house, holiday flats and finally as the Splash Point Hotel, and now this narrative has been recreated as a film by Chris Conil. Seaford Museum and Heritage Society has arranged a special showing of The House On The Cliff on Sunday 8th May at 2pm in the Little Theatre, Steyne Road, Seaford. As well as the film, there will be the opportunity to talk to Chris Conil and to see another of his films entitled Greener Seaford, which concerns climate change and the Eco Fair. Entrance is £5, and just £2 for Museum members, payment on the door. The following week, on Friday 13th at 7.30pm, we have a talk presented by Mairin Colleary – Overland to Mongolia at 70. This will also be in the Little Theatre, and the entry charge will also be £5 and £2 for Museum members.

A Conversation about Conservation We were sorry to learn that Claire Sumners, a tireless and passionate local environmental campaigner, died in March. She was the driving force behind the Seaford Beach Clean and Plastic Free Seaford. Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

Back in 2018 Claire visited our office to advise us on how we could further improve as sustainable as possible. Here are four simple ideas we could all try: our agency’s sustainability and impact on the environment. 1 Don’t use single-use plastic like water bottles or coffee cups. She was friendly, energetic, full of ideas, and committed to making the world a greener and better place. Whether it was teaching school children the importance of caring for the environment, or advising businesses and organisations on how they could do their bit, Claire was a force of nature. She certainly had a positive impact on us. We’ve always done all we can as a local business to help the environment, with our electric car, solar panels and recycling, but the news of Claire’s premature death has reminded us to try and do more. Claire was passionate about making Seaford

Seaford Stamp & Postcard Club

COLLECTING DEAD COUNTRIES

Seaford And District Stamp and Postcard Club remains active, readers! In March we held our AGM and Annual Competitions night, and in April we had a presentation by Hugh Bennet on Kiribati and Tuvalu, or for us old ’uns known as the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Mention of the former name reminds me that a lot of countries have either ceased to exist, or changed their names due to political events. This means that stamps issued by the old authority become classed as from a ‘Dead’ country. Such events often resulted from postColonial freedom, but sometimes countries themselves proved too fragile to remain a united entity. Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in Eastern

Europe proved this, after Communism as a concept fell in Eastern Europe. Elsewhere in Africa, frequent border and administration changes caused countries to form and disappear, particularly in the French colonies. The end of UK, Belgian, Spanish and Portuguese influence saw other regions created only temporarily, sometimes in harrowing circumstances. Who remembers Katanga, and later on Biafra? North and South America proved more stable, but Canada and Australia were initially run and issued stamps as separate Provincial or State colonies. Australian issues did not appear until 1913, whilst Newfoundland continued to issue its own stamps until 1949! The Middle and Far East also produced a number of countries who now issue no stamps. Our May meeting is a display by Jim Etherington of WW11 postcards. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at the Con Club in Crouch Lane, Seaford, at 7.15pm onwards. Visitors welcome. Bob Brown, Chairman

On the Verge

the Magic of No Mow May!

We are hoping our No Mow May campaign will have encouraged you to keep your mower in the shed as Seaford comes into bloom during May. Hopefully trees, shrubs and flowers will all be thriving in the warmer weather. In the time saved, head outside, enjoy the sunshine or keep watch on your lawn, or local green spaces. Longer grass emerging in the un-mowed areas can include Oxeye daisy, Field scabious and knapweed, all valuable nectar sources. Often wild flower seeds already lay dormant in the soil and given the chance, you may also have clover, selfheal and bird’s foot trefoil appearing, which will then attract bees and butterflies.

Seaford Town Council have agreed to leave some areas of grass longer in our public green spaces, which should make them interesting to look at and encourage insects and other creatures. Our volunteers have been out monitoring their local green spaces, spotting flowers and clearing up litter. Many thanks to Lewes District council for providing the group with proper litter picking equipment. Let us know if you would like support to clean up/monitor your local green space. We’ve also been working with local schools with their environmental projects, and are planning some events with Bug-life including pollinator counts and work on insect habitats. Our Summer wild flower counts will have the data fed into an exciting new mapping pilot scheme. Insects are in serious decline and we were absolutely delighted when insect expert and writer, Dave Goulson, agreed to come and do a talk for us in Seaford in April. We also recently ran a Renaturing Seaford workshop where local children made some amazing insect habitats, painted signs and pebbles, and a beautiful mural, which will all help get the ‘No Mow’ message across. Children could also plant their own mini wild flower gardens to take home, so they can watch the seeds appear and grow! As always, we welcome new volunteers to help us with existing activities, including workshops, events, talks, surveys etc. We’d also love to hear from people bursting with new ideas about how we can get our message out and really renature Seaford! Do get involved, we would love to meet you. Photos from top: Don’t Mow in May notice; Planting wildflowers at our workshop; Ladybird.

Seaford Community Cinema has an exciting and varied programme at the Barn Theatre over the next few months, with a programme including the new West Side Story (12A) which won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and BAFTA for Ariana DeBose. Who would think the 1961 film of forbidden love between members of rival gangs the Sharks and the Jets could be bettered! Well, the Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus was that in some ways Steven Spielberg’s movie surpasses the original, with Metacritic stating, ‘Easily the best film of 2021.’ See it on Friday 6th May at 7.30pm. Set in Dover, After Love (12), on Friday 20th May at 7.30pm, won the BAFTA Best Actress award for Joanna Scanlan, who stars as a widow after the unexpected death of her husband. A day after the burial she discovers he had another life 21 miles across the Channel in Calais. When she poses as a cleaner, she becomes embroiled in more secrets. In a National Theatre Live screening on Thursday 26th May at 7pm Nicholas Hytner directs Ralph Fiennes in David Hare’s Straight Line Crazy. Fiennes plays the most powerful man in New York, whose motivation is to improve the lives of the city’s workers, only to meet resistance from protest groups who have different ideas. Will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction? Friday 10th June at 7.30pm sees psychological drama Spencer (12) starring Oscar-nominated Best Actress Christen Stewart as the troubled Princess Diana experiencing three fraught days at Sandringham while spending Christmas with the royal family. The film also stars Timothy Spall, Jack Nielen and Jack Farthing.

40

From royal royalty the cinema goes to fashion royalty with director Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci (15), starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Jared Leto. When Patricia Reggiani (Gaga), an outsider from a humble background, marries into the empirical Gucci family her huge ambition triggers a spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge and murder. See it on Friday 24th June at 7.30pm. Pedro Almódovar’s turbulent picture Parallel Mothers (15, subtitled) mustn’t be missed. Starring Penélope Cruz, it is the story of two mothers who gave birth on the same day. Knotted and subversive it is, to quote Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian, ‘An autopsy of dark Spanish history dressed up as a bright baby shower, screening on Friday 1st July. The season concludes on Friday 8th July with BAFTA’s Outstanding British Film, the amazing Belfast (12A), set in 1969 at the start of The Troubles. It is told largely through the eyes of 9-yearold Buddy (Jude Hill) and shows how his Protestant family’s secure world is ripped apart by sectarian violence, barricades and threats. His grandparents, played by Judy Dench and Ciarán Hinds are also superb, as are Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan as Buddy’s parents. Slater’s Sussex author’s latest art book After books on two artists inspired by the coast off the south of England, a Seaford writer has turned his attention to a painter inspired by the coast off the south of France. James Trollope’s earlier books focused on the lives of Eric Slater (1896-1963) and Sir Frank Short (18571945) both of whom worked in Seaford between the wars. His new publication Rudolph Ihlee: The Road to Collioure, published on 5th May by Lund Humphries, features the life of a painter who settled in a small Mediterranean fishing port in the south of France near the border with Spain.

Spencer, Mark Gertler and CRW Nevinson. Divorce and gradual disillusionment with the London art scene led to his exile, the early part of which he shared with the Scottish architect/ artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. James Trollope’s interest in Ihlee began after he bought a tiny village house not far from Collioure more than 25 years ago. ‘During one Seaford winter, I was looking for something to remind me of that sun-filled region and I bought one of Ihlee’s paintings of Collioure. The more I saw of his work, the more I thought it should be better known.’ Priced at £35 with 70 illustrations, Rudolph Ihlee:The Road to Collioure is available on Amazon and elsewhere. The Group – It’s A Social Group! For many people, spring is a time to reflect and make new plans. Maybe it’s the gorgeous spring flowers or the lighter evenings. Or just fine welcoming weather. Whatever the reason, there’s a Sussex club called The Group that knows how important it is to find a place that’s a comfortable fit and to meet likeminded people. Members of The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women aged 55+, get together in Worthing, Burgess Hill, Lewes, Horsham and Brighton. It’s not a dating agency. It’s an opportunity for men and women to meet new friends in a welcoming atmosphere. There are opportunities for walks, lunches and dinners, music, golf, theatre trips, pub evenings and trips to galleries. There are always a couple of well organised holidays every year too. Members receive a diary by email twice a month. Once people join, they can add events to the diary and introduce others to their own

interests. Members create the events, and that way The Group offers a great variety of things to do. There’s plenty going on. It’s just a matter of knowing where to go. Says Tricia Bentley, co-founder of The Group: “We have over two hundred members. We recently celebrated our first fifteen years, having been going since 2005, so we are confident that we are getting it right. For anybody who is newly on their own, or who just wants a change, The Group just might be right for you. We know that it’s not fun going into a room full of new people, but you’ll get a good welcome at The Group. So push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome. We have a very informative website which tells you everything you need to know, including where we meet.’ Take a look at the website: www.thegroup.org.uk.

The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) is delighted to acknowledge grants totalling £18,330 from The Hendy Foundation, Sussex Community Foundation – Price Family Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund. Earlier this year TYCP was disappointed not to gain Lottery funding, having received grants in other years, so resubmitted an amended application which was successful. So at this point it seems appropriate to pay tribute to TYCP’s fundraisers, who put so much time and effort into often complex documentation in bids to gain much-needed money for the charity. Without these large sums of money TYCP would be unable to pay for the therapists who in the next academic year are on track to provide counselling for 93 students

from all five of Seaford’s state-maintained schools. Each student is offered a block of 10 sessions at a cost of around £500. However, the rules by which foundations offer the grants often preclude using the money for, say, administration costs which, even in a voluntary organisation like TYCP, can mount up, so TYCP is grateful for the very necessary support received from local organisations and individuals. So thank you Seaford Community Cinema for screening a film, In the Heights, last month at a fundraiser, which began with a dance performance by Streetfunk. The event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Seaford, Cllr Rodney and Ann Reed, and raised £142.50 for TYCP. Not only does the support of local people help financially to provide counselling for young people with mental health problems, but it aids awareness which in turn helps TYCP’s bids for corporate and foundation grants. Together TYCP will strive to help as many students as it can. Photo l-r, TYCP treasurer Jo Stone, Mayoress Ann Reed, Seaford Mayor Cllr Rodney Reed, and the TYCP trustee Mairin Colleary at the Community Cinema event.

Sue is an experienced demonstrator and has been in her role for over 10 years. We are sure she will delight us with her arrangements. The competition is entitled Green as Grass. the beginning of the month to shorten overall growing time – courgettes, cucumbers, marrows, melons, pumpkins, runner beans and sweetcorn. 3 Replant window boxes and baskets. opportunity to increase your plant stock, and maybe chat to the person who grew them. To view gardening on a grander scale, why not join the Society’s coach trip to Leonardslee Gardens on May 12th, or visit Capel Manor on 23rd June (see Member’s Notice Board below)? th on

Maybe we will get a tantalising taste of summer this month. There will certainly be longer days and hopefully mild nights, so that our gardens can really get going. May is an excellent month to view other people’s gardens, and while you will be busy on your own plot, it’s always useful to get some new ideas. There are plenty of viewings on offer throughout Sussex in May with the National Garden Scheme. Many NGS gardens have excellent value plant sales, so a perfect

Chlorophytum – Spider Plant

Why highlight such a commonplace plant? Because this easy, tolerant and adaptable plant deserves special notice. A few years back I noticed Chlorophytum in municipal bedding displays. I took that idea home, and using the myriad of spiderlettes cascading from my classic Chlorophytum comosum ‘Vittatum,’ I raised new plants to be dotted about the garden in pots and baskets, some in the ground. They were to be treated as annuals. Chlorophytum originated in the tropics, it doesn’t like frost, so I was surprised when new growth pushed through the following year. No doubt a mild winter helped, but it demonstrates how temperature tolerant this plant can be. Indoors, Chlorophytum is not only a welcome touch of green, it also helps to clean the air. In NASA tests it removed around 90% of the chemical formaldehyde, plus other volatile organic compounds. What more can I say? This undemanding plant is a winner, asking only for good light, sharply drained compost, regular watering, plus feeding in the growing months. You can easily beg a spiderlette from a friend, but for something different look on the internet or in garden centres. Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum,’ is similar to ‘Vittatum,’ but with cream margins. Chlorophytum comosum ‘Bonnie,’ is a variety with curly leaves.

Driftwood Garden 2022 2022 sees Driftwood only opening its garden gate for two public days, over the weekend of the Macmillan Coastal Garden trail on the 23rd and 24th July. Fear not though, the garden is open, by appointment, for visitors through the National Garden Scheme, BBC Gardeners’ World 2-for-1 scheme, and all other visitors who may find the garden on TripAdvisor too. We begin on Thursday 1st June, right through to the 31st July. What’s more, there will be six Sussex artists displaying their work in the garden for sale too. Regular visitors will be in for a surprise, as the back garden has undergone a major transformation since last Summer. Owner, Geoff Stonebanks, has created a stunning sunken patio area, bounded by old railway sleepers to display many of his drought-tolerant succulents.

Remember those 10 days or so of very welcome but somewhat unseasonably warm temperatures towards the end of March? ‘Well,’ said Katie, ‘Only time will tell if we were too hasty in cutting back some plants.’ Among these were salvias. ‘This stimulates growth,’ she went on. However, at the time of writing another chilly spell was being forecast. ‘The salvias will be slammed with too intense a frost,’ she warned, ‘But we didn’t cut back too hard so hopefully all will be well.’ Certainly all was otherwise well in this beautiful haven in the Crouch, now accessed each Wednesday morning via gates bearing a new blue wooden sign made by Brian, whose projects in the garden have gained him the nickname ‘Woody’. No sooner had he completed three-tier shelving to house plants being brought on outside the polytunnel than he was creating wooden bunnies for Easter plus owls and butterflies for Maggie to sell at the sales table. In the polytunnel Veronica, having taken old plant labels home to wash, was replacing them in the very tidy polytunnel. Outside, probably thanks to its protective netting, placed when they were the teensiest seedlings, broad beans were already in flower, and radishes and spinach were showing green leaflets in their raised bed. Fingers are crossed, however, for the espaliered plum which burst forth into white blossom possibly a mite too early given that forecast. Elsewhere was a riot of red and yellow tulips and polyanthus among other beauties, but volunteers hardly had time to enjoy

64

a visitor’s-eye view, being so busy dividing and potting. Katie again: ‘We’ve been going through all the cuttings beds specifically laid out in order to increase stock. Now this is bearing fruit. Things are bulking up so we can pot.’ The garden strives to be totally organic, so what do you do when vine weevils and slugs venture out, carried away by the early sunshine? Send off for sachets of nematodes, that’s what. ‘This is an organic means of controlling vine weevils and slugs. So much better than any pellets,’ she said. ‘Nematodes are naturally occurring living organisms already present in the soil which are ingested by the weevil larvae and the slugs which kills them. The nematodes are sent out by post in sachets which we will mix up in water and add to the soil with watering cans. Each sachet is enough to do about 100m² of open ground so we should be able to cover all our beds and pots. But the soil needs to be 5°C, so we hope the cold doesn’t last too long. One application lasts for about six weeks, by which time seedlings and young plants should be big enough to fend for themselves.’ The elevenses break saw volunteers congratulating Lesley, who had spoken very informatively and entertainingly about the garden on Seahaven FM. Not only was everyone ready for coffee or tea but we were all feeling a little peckish too. Luckily Jan was on hand with her frying pan to prepare delicious pancakes for everyone. But on that drizzly Wednesday morning, it was a toss up whether the weather would be kind so watch this space… The Garden Team Photos from top: Maggie displays one of Brian’s wooden butterflies; Abdul saws a board to make a display shelf for the garden entrance; No mistaking which is the community garden now...;Meleanthus ready to flower; Plum blossom heralds spring; Polyanthus flag up support for Ukraine.

The House on the Cliff Video Documentary Over the last year I’ve had the privilege to work with Lyn Lawson, author of The House on the Cliff, bringing Lynn’s words to life as a documentary, highlighting life and times of a house no longer in existence. It’s the story of a building that stood on Seaford Head: it’s first owner Maria Fleming Baxter, [1897-1907] decided to escape the busy metropolis of London to relax and take in the Seaford air. Life back then was a simple affair, if you were wealthy, then land was affordable, and what better place to live than Seaford? Plans were drawn up and a ninebedroom cottage was built, attended by three servants. By this time (1864) the railway had arrived and Seaford had become a hub for leisure pursuits. Over a period of 70 years the house was occupied by various families and was converted into a hotel, until its

demise in the 1960s when it was demolished and sold off to developers. The documentary tells the story through postcard images and personal recollections from local Seaford residents. Kevin Gordon, local historian, recounts the war years, when Seaford hosted many soldiers based here. The documentary is previewing on Sunday 8th May at 2pm, at the Little Theatre, Seaford. Chris Conil, the video producer and Lynn Lawson, author of The House on the Cliff, will be on hand to answer any questions about the production of the film. Do come and enjoy a moment of historical reference to a time long gone.

The Raven

14th May 1264: The aftermath of the battle. Two thousand corpses lie strewn on the slopes and riverbanks around Lewes. Some view this as a victory; for others this is defeat. But for a large, black bird who has calmly watched the bloodshed from the side-lines, this scene of slaughter is an all-you-can-eat buffet. Democracy never tasted so good. Smart birds, Ravens. Way before 1264 they’d realised they needn’t waste their energy killing to eat when other less intelligent species can do the dirty work for them. For centuries Ravens exploited man’s enthusiasm for resolving quarrels with clubs and swords. Ravenous Ravens dined out at all the finest battlefields, burial grounds, gibbets and gallows. Hanging around with corpses would get anyone a bad reputation, but the Raven’s took on mythological proportions. Across the northern hemisphere the bird became respected and revered by many cultures

as an omen of death, denizen of the afterlife, messenger of defeat. This sinister CV secured them a plethora of portentous appearances from the Old Testament to Game of Thrones. The sight of a Raven struck fear in the heart of man who would dare not harm it. Today Ravens still occur in our folklore as the earthbound spirit of King Arthur, and at the Tower of London the birds are entrusted with the fate of the kingdom. Yet aside from all the make-believe malevolent accolades bestowed on the Raven, it truly is magnificent to watch. As befits Britain’s wickedest bird, the Raven certainly dresses the part in a costume of sleek, glossy black feathers, shaggy ‘beard’ and stout dagger beak. It commands the sky; wheeling on wide wings and uttering its guttural ‘cronk-cronk’ call. Sometimes their behaviour is incongruous with their evil image. To see Ravens rolling and tumbling through the air during their joyous display flight is like catching the grim reaper doing the hokey-cokey. When not busy instilling fear in the population, Ravens performed an important clean-up job, ridding Britain’s towns of rotting rubbish, and the bird was protected by royal decree. But in the 17th century, people’s perceptions changed and for centuries the birds were persecuted. Ravens, and the old beliefs they represented, were exorcised from England. By 1895 they had vanished from Sussex. But informed, tolerant attitudes have recently allowed Ravens to return. They mostly breed on our chalk cliffs and quarries but can be seen flying over our towns and cities. In our comfortable world of surround sound and selfies there is something reassuringly sinister about watching a Raven circling overhead; a spectral souvenir of our brutal, primitive past. Sussex will never again be the site of a bloody revolutionary battle. But there’s no harm in a few Ravens hanging around. Just in case. opportunity for volunteers to help, is to be considered by the Club. Our thanks go to Morrisons who donated some items for the buffet and to the Rotarian wives who also provided and served some delicious food in addition to ‘washing up’.

Supporting humanitarian efforts for Ukraine

On Friday 12th March, volunteers who helped Seaford Rotary collect a record sum by accompanying Santa’s sleigh through the streets of Seaford in December, were welcomed at the Crossways Church, Blatchington Hall to a thank you buffet meal. President Elect Ann Reed welcomed the guests and introduced members of Seaford Rotary who chair or represented the Club’s committees – John Owen: Membership, Paul Vaesen: Youth Services, Bill Pierce: International, Dave Argent: Fundraising and Clive Livingstone: Community Service – before inviting the guests to help themselves to drinks and food. The Rotarians, supported by wives and husbands, provided an opportunity for the volunteers and Friends to discuss how they may be able to help the Rotary Club with future events (photo above). President Elect Ann Reed said that a sleigh volunteer after she had thanked him told her: ‘It was a pleasure, I loved seeing the happy faces of the children’. A suggestion from a volunteer that Seaford Rotary should publish an alternative, slimmer version of Newsmonger, giving advance details of future events and the

Rotary District has set up a Crowdfunding Page in aid of Ukraine through which anyone – including the public – can make a donation for which the Rotary will match fund the first £10,000. Every penny donated goes directly to those in need. The weblink is: www.rotaryhelpsukraine.com. Donations from this fund are sent to: • Romania/Moldova towards supplies and emergency accommodation, including for protein to feed 5,000 refugees for a week in Moldova; • International Rotary Fellowship of Health Professionals (who are co-ordinating medical supplies into Ukraine) towards medical supplies; • Shelterbox towards their efforts in Moldova and Poland; • Poland towards accommodation and supplies provision; • Ukraine District for urgent supplies for the displaced persons inside west Ukraine. Rotary is also working to help the displaced people arriving daily in the countries surrounding Ukraine, and has volunteers at the borders of Ukraine with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova 24 hours each day. Donations go directly to trusted colleagues in the Ukraine and all its bordering countries. They can identify the real needs of refugees in each country – medicines (especially dressings and pain killers for adults and children), warm socks, thermals, food, bullet-proof vests, blankets, sleeping bags, first aid kits, dressings, hygiene products, toiletries, sanitary towels, nappies, wet wipes, torches, batteries, candles, laptops, phones, tablets with good batteries and much more. Seaford Rotary has donated £4,000 to the Disaster

Emergency Committee fund for Ukraine. Donations up to £20 million to this fund will be match funded by the Government, and thus the £4,000 effectively becomes £8,000. In addition to the £4,000 to be donated from the Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust, members of Seaford Rotary collected donations for humanitarian aid for Ukraine at Morrisons on 19th March and in Broad Street on 26th March. In the two collections a sum of £1,082.12 was donated by the public, and it is hoped to pass this money to Seaford for Ukraine – a newly organised group with the objective of helping Ukrainian refugees to settle in Seaford.

CARPENTRY SERVICES

Last Minute Artists

FOR ALL YOUR CARPENTRY & JOINERY NEEDS

Welcome gusts of fresh air can blow through Seaford’s art scene, what with the Crypt Gallery in Church Street having its future assured and events going ahead with much more relaxed Covid restrictions.

CARPENTRY, JOINERY, FITTED WARDROBES, REPLACEMENT INTERNAL DOORS, KITCHENS, BATHROOMS, BEDROOMS, PROPERTY RENOVATIONS.

So it seems appropriate to entitle Last Minute Artists’ burst-out-of-the-gloom exhibition Here We Go Again! The show is taking over the whole of the gallery space over three days of the weekend, beginning Friday 6th May, open from 10am until 4.30pm each day, closing on Sunday 8th May.

CONTACT PETE WATTS 01323 897394 07710 938943

Last Minute Artists went out on a limb last summer with its very successful Cliffhanger exhibition at South Hill Barn, but has been absent from the Crypt for two years, so this month’s venture will be like a homecoming for this group, which based its name on booking space at – the clue’s in the name – the last minute. LMA tells its mailing list of artists that it has a date for a show and then allocates space on a first-come-first-served basis, a system which usually results in a huge variety of work styles and media. At the time of writing, the responses were still coming in, but be assured that the exhibition will be showcasing interesting work from talented artists.

peteandlynnwatts@gmail.com

Using all three spaces, including the Undercroft, there should be space for the work of up to 20 artists, including that of committee members Sue Casebourne whose felt hare and exhibition poster are pictured here, Geraldine Edmonds whose sheep paintings are always snapped up, Nigel Goss, whose quirky two- and three-dimensional work is both fun and thoughtprovoking, Sarah Gregson whose local landscapes and observational paintings are much loved, and Sally-Mae Joseph who offers joyous explosions of colour and form plus ceramics.

Seaford Striders Seaford Striders success at the Martello Half Marathon with two top-five finishers!

On Sunday 27th March, nearly two years after the last event, 21 Seaford Striders lined up on Seaford Seafront for the Martello Half Marathon. It’s a tough course, starting on the flat before a tough climb up onto the Downs, before an exhilarating downhill section into Bishopstone, with a fast, flat finish back on Seaford Beach.

This year two Seaford Striders finished within the Top Five Finishers – Phill Stevenson (4th) in 1:30:36 and Ollie Sprague (5th) in 1:33:21. An astounding result for both athletes on a challenging course. Samantha Alvarez was the first Strider lady home in 1:48:26. Other Striders to complete the race were: Damien (1:39:25), Simon Coppard (1:40:25) Joshua Nisbett (1:42:11), Rowan Tully (1:47:24), Joshua Rudd (1:47:27), Russell Hewlett (1:49:53), Martin Dallimer (1:51:52), Rob Sarjeant (1:52:52), Bryony Clarke (1:54:15), Adam Haverly (1:55:08), Carl Howard (2:06:43), Lisa Parkinson (2:09:13), Michelle Varndell (2:18:54), Trevor Jones (2:26:10), Sue Curtis (2:30:04), Victoria Maleski (2:58:04), Sandra Standen (2:58:07); and Sharon Plank (2:58:42). Seaford Striders is open to all abilities from beginners who are welcome to join our Couch to 5K Programme to seasoned runners. We have five groups based on ability at our Wednesday Club Night. Intergenerational opera Charlotte Wicks is a professional opera singer and teacher living in Seaford with her young family, she and fellow opera singer Charlotte Shaw met whilst singing at Glyndebourne Festival opera, and realised their mutual love for music outreach and its effects on people of all ages and walks of life. After previously running dementia choirs, working for live music now and being involved in opera outreach for the main UK opera companies, they decided to create their own Intergenerational project, where two diverse age groups can come together to communicate through music making. Intergenerational opera is a community outreach project that has been running since 2018. After the challenges of living through a global pandemic these projects have become essential in helping schools and Care homes to reintegrate with their local communities. We realise the impact the last two years have had on the older population, particularly those living with dementia, and the social development of our younger generation who have missed interacting with their wider family and community, so we are focusing on creativity playing an important role in bringing these two diverse age groups together. Having previously gained funding from Brighton Dome and Festival, and the success of our previous projects, we are able to provide a six week project for a reasonable fee. The projects use music to bridge the gap in communication, and to create and sustain important social relationships. Our 90-minute weekly sessions are run by two professional opera singers and are accompanied by a pianist. The sessions involve learning about the art of opera, teaching music by ear, creative composition and culminate in a final performance for carers and parents. Our project aims to increase social skills, build confidence and enhance overall general wellbeing for all involved. We are currently working with several schools in East Sussex, and are booked to work with both Cradle Hill Primary School and Seaford primary school this coming September, and so we are looking for groups of older

people in Seaford to join this six-week project, which is either held in the care home lounge or communal area, or in the school’s hall. Although we are not a registered charity, we do give a donation from each of our projects to Dementia UK and we would love to hear from care homes, schools and community groups in the Seaford area who would be interested in working with us in the future. Our work is also supported by organising and performing in Opera Gala evenings in local churches to raise awareness and funds to keep the project affordable for schools and care homes. Our next Opera Gala features opera singers from Glyndebourne, English National Opera and the Royal Opera house, accompanied by Matthew Fletcher at St Leonard’s Church, Seaford on Saturday 14th May at 7.30pm, tickets can be reserved by contacting intergenopera@gmail.com More information can also be found on our website: www.intergenerationalopera.com We look forward to hearing from you. St Peter’s Church All set for the popular sale

One of the most popular annual events at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, is its Plant Sale, which this year is on Saturday14th May from 2pm-4pm. There will be a tempting selection of annual and perennial plants for sale, and judging from previous years, the best advice is to get there early to be able to choose the best. It would also be helpful if you bring your own recycled bags to transport your purchases, to help retain your green credentials. As usual, a further temptation will be refreshments, to be served while the sale is on.

Southern Stomp Supports Seahaven Community Food The Southern Stomp Linedancers raised a final total of £90 to buy Easter treats for the Seahaven Community Food project, which were delivered to the organisation in time for the Easter holidays. The monies were raised with the Big Ted and his Egg raffle, which ran for several weeks – a big Thank You to everyone who bought tickets! Joy Ashton, Southern Stomp Linedance Club. www.southernstomp.com

Lecture time

The next in the series of East Blatchington lectures at St Peter’s will be held this month, on Tuesday afternoon, 3rd May. It features the author Simon Parke, who was once a priest in the Church of England, and is now a freelance author. He will talk about his recent book, Gospel: Rumours of Love, which is set in first-century Palestine, a region glued together by hate. The Roman invaders rule, the Jewish authorities collude while the enraged and desperate plot violent revolt. Pilate lives with his nightmares, Herod makes guilty hay, the balance of power is delicate – and the last thing anyone needs is a man with a mind and heart of his own. He’s going to suggest a shocking alternative for his homeland. This book tells His story, through His eyes; and through those of two different women in His life, Miriam of Magdalene and Mary, his mother – different women with very different dreams. The result is much more than an historical novel. It is an epic account of the nature of love. Simon Parke was a priest for 20 years, and then changed his career altogether, to work in a supermarket for three years. Now he is a successful writer, and as well as books he has scripted various

Photo: Joy Ashton with the Easter treats. television and radio programmes, and contributed articles to national and international publications. Admission to the lecture is £7, which includes tea and cake, and you can book by phone on 01323 899054, or by email officeebb.benefice@gmail.com. The lecture is at St Peter’s Church hall in Belgrave Road, and starts at 2.30pm.

Maths masterclasses add up to a great a success for BOSCO CET A trial run of Royal Institution (Ri) Maths masterclasses aimed at students in three Sussex primary schools has proven so successful that plans are being made to make the Masterclass Maths programme an annual feature on the schools’ calendars.

The Maths leaders in the trust’s primary schools identified 26 children to participate in the first Ri Masterclass programme. The children took part in five sessions in total, held on Zoom. Two were delivered by expert speakers provided by the Royal Institution, with Dr Turvill also delivering a session and Matt Hind, Head of Maths at secondary school St Philip Howard Catholic School (SPH), also part of the Trust, delivering another. Two sixth formers from SPH also received specialist training as part of the Ri Masterclass programme and then jointly delivered another session to the children.

it.’ A student from Annecy Catholic Primary School in Seaford was particularly enthusiastic about learning Maths that would not normally be taught at primary level: ‘I thought it was good because it taught me about stuff I would learn later on.’ Meanwhile, Andrew Clarke, Head of School at SPH where the sixth-form students learn, said: ‘It looks like we may well have a few future Maths teachers in our midst.’ For Dr Turvill the Ri Masterclasses have helped raise the profile of Maths in the Trust’s schools and also opened up an extensive network of other Ri Masterclasses to the Trust. She said: ‘I have met so many children who enjoy Maths, and now we have given them the opportunity to meet others who enjoy the subject and see that Maths could be a part of their future.’ All the primary students who took part in the first programme have been invited to a celebration day of talks on 9th July, either in person in London, or live streamed from their homes. The next wave of Ri Masterclasses is set to take place this Autumn.

‘The Royal Institution trained the two sixth-form students, who then went on to deliver a superb session to the children together,’ said Dr Turvill. ‘It was a real opportunity for the whole trust to work together across the age groups.’ The Trust has been delighted by the positive feedback from participating children and the results their teachers are seeing in class. ‘I was fascinated by the different types of Maths topics,’ said a student from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Haywards Heath, with another from the same school saying, “It was fun and I really enjoyed

Dr Rebecca Turvill, Director of Primary Maths for Bosco Catholic Education Trust (Bosco CET) has hailed the first Ri Masterclass Maths series run by the trust as a triumph, with feedback and results following the series cementing her decision to make it a regular feature. ‘I was looking to do something that would be a challenge for those children in the Trust’s primary schools who have shown a high level of engagement with Maths. I had heard about the Ri Masterclasses and realised they would make the perfect opportunity to do just that,’ said Dr Turvill. ‘The content of Ri Masterclasses goes beyond the national curriculum, challenging and stretching students, as well as encouraging them to enjoy Maths and see all the wonderful careers that are open to those who are skilled in mathematics.’

No Fault Divorce; Divorce is hard enough without having to assign blame From 6th April 2022 married couples no longer need to prove the breakdown of a marriage by citing one of five, often inflammatory facts. Couples will also be able to jointly file for divorce, rather than it being solely down to one person to bring the case. This is a welcome change-given the difficulties amicable couples currently face to try and formalise their separation. However, a major concern is that people will process their own application for divorce online and will be unaware that arrangements will still need to be made in respect of dividing the marital assets. Splitting the finances is an unavoidable task if you want to provide security for yourself. If you cannot reach an agreement either directly or via mediation, negotiations through solicitors may be required and/or an application to the court.

How do I know what I am entitled to?

Married couples have the right to make financial claims against each other in respect of the following; • Property adjustment orders (i.e. orders for sale of properties or transfer of ownership) • Lump sum orders (payments of capital) • Maintenance (i.e. income payments) • Pension sharing orders The Court considers all the circumstances of the case, gives first consideration to the welfare of any children of the family under the age of 18 and in particular, the Court has regard to certain issues, such as income and earning capacity, housing and financial needs, health issues, and duration of the marriage. The aim of the Court is to achieve fairness.

Before you can fully understand how the matrimonial finances should be divided, there should be some form of financial disclosure between you. That will enable you/your solicitor to understand exactly what is in the matrimonial pot to be shared and the most appropriate way of doing so in order to meet your respective income and capital needs.

What are the risks if we do not formalise our financial agreement?

Even if you do not have any marital assets to split, it is still important to file a Consent Order with the court to provide for a clean break between you. If you do not, you leave yourself open to a claim from your former spouse at any time. This is particularly important if your financial position changes further down the line as your former spouse may suggest a share of your newfound wealth is required to meet their ongoing needs. A Consent Order will ensure this cannot happen.

What should I do if I want to deal with the divorce myself but need help to resolve the financial aspects of my marriage?

Our family team are experts in our field and that means you can come to us knowing we have the attitude and professionalism to make your situation better. Whether you have reached an agreement between you, and you simply need a Consent Order drafted to document your agreement, or you need advice on what you should do or what you are entitled to, we will be able to advise you on how best to deal with your situation and reach a timely resolution. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Solving your glazing issues l

l

l

l

l

l

Does your conservatory get too hot to use in summer? Would you like to do away with your net curtains/blinds, but still maintain some privacy? Are your floorings/soft furnishings fading? Do you have an older property and need the glass strengthening? Would you like some privacy in your garden building/office? Do you have sensitive skin?

Here at Tintwise we can solve your glazing issues with the installation of one of our extensive range of window films. Whether your issue is Heat and Glare Reduction, UV Protection, Fading, Privacy or Decorative, we have the answer. Based in Pevensey, as a family-run business, we have been helping our customers to achieve a more comfortable living/working space for the past 15 years

110

and are to are proud of the excellent level of quality and service we provide.

What can window film do for you?

As a much cheaper and cleaner alternative to blinds and shutters, window film is low maintenance and long lasting. Solar films let in lots of natural light, whilst protecting your home with a heat and glare reduction of up to 90%. All of our films from clear through to the tinted options have a 99% UV filter to protect from fading, and for skin issues we have a 99.9% UV filter film approved by the British Skin Foundation to offer peace of mind. We all like privacy in our homes, but don’t necessarily want to have net curtains or blinds: window film offers a lightly reflective surface to provide privacy and a clear safety film will provide protection from would-be thieves from smashing the glass to gain entry to your home.

Trees for Seaford

Pruning, watching and an award!

Throughout the cold weather we have continued to care for our trees. After the final planting of new trees in mid-January in Tudor Close and Westdown Road, we switched our attention to pruning trees that had been planted in previous years. We had a very instructive (albeit bitterly cold) session with Keith Sacre in February who taught a group of approximately 20 stalwarts, the basic principles of pruning street trees – identifying the leaders and then taking out growth with the potential to cause problems in future, and generally creating a pleasing symmetry to the tree. We have had several forays to prune trees in the pruning ‘window’, while the weather has been reasonably cool, and have had to tackle a few tangles that had got a bit out of hand! Hopefully most of our trees have now received attention. Mega thanks to Karen Hall from Friends of Sutton Downs! who used the workshop to create an illustrated pruning guide to remind us of Keith’s instructions and which we have shared with other groups across East Sussex connected with the Queen’s Green Canopy Jubilee initiative. In relation to the latter we are also in discussion with other local groups who are hoping to plant commemorative Jubilee trees this year. The next new push is to establish Neighbourhood Tree Watches to monitor the trees, and possibly help out with watering young trees in the first years during drought periods. the Tree Watch in your street, please get in touch via treesforseaford@ gmail.com, but feel free to water any young street trees if you think it has been dry and they are in need! A tree monitoring group has been set up with the aim of methodically monitoring the health of all the trees we plant, to give us useful information about best practice to guide future planting. Excitingly, we have gained a Mayor’s Award ‘for activities and initiatives to improve the natural environment around Seaford’. We are very pleased that the hard work, in particular the input of certain people, has been recognised by Seaford Town Council.

Enjoying food with dementia… Food, sharing meals and cooking are central to all of our lives, and here at Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, we cook our food daily, even baking cakes daily for afternoon tea. We all know that food is often linked to strong emotions. For some people cooking was their role in the family, which gave them purpose. It can be an essential part of a routine, but many people who have dementia struggle with cooking. Preparing even a simple meal requires remembering many steps and multitasking. Brain changes that occur in dementia often impair the mental abilities necessary for cooking. Moreover, dementia can damage taste and smell, making food preparation even more challenging. Difficulties with cooking will come on gradually and may be inconsistent. It can be difficult for both the individual with dementia and their family to know when and how help is needed.

Dealing with change in abilities

Many people with dementia can also be resistant to giving up cooking and to losing their role as chef in the family. It is especially difficult for them, as well as for the caregiver, to accept someone else taking over the role or to relying on pre-made food. These changes are a practical and emotional challenge for both the caregiver and the person with dementia. While it won’t erase the changes taking place, the caregiver is helped by acknowledging the loss and finding strategies to moderate the emotional impact of the changes in someone’s ability to participate in preparing meals.

When to offer support

It can be difficult to know when someone with dementia is struggling with cooking. A goal of preserving independence is often at odds with the goal to maintain safety. Do you notice that they struggle to prepare recipes they have been cooking for years? Do they forget to add in essential ingredients, or leave an appliance on after a meal is prepared?

114

Cooking together makes cooking possible and can really be helpful for someone with mild dementia. It might relieve some of the worry and safety concerns if you can support them. Try simple recipes, making sure that the steps you use are as few as possible. Try to reduce the use of dangerous knives or blenders and watch out for the appliances being left on.

Nutrition

When a person with dementia is unable to cook for themselves, nutrition can quickly deteriorate. You may need to look at other options to provide your loved ones with the things they need. You could consider having their meals delivered and pre prepared. There are plenty of healthy nutritious ready meals now available pre-prepared from the supermarket. You could also have family, friends or a professional caregiver help prepare meals. Meals at Clifden House are tailored to the resident’s needs and what the individual and family tell us they like / don’t like. We cook food daily and bake regularly, ensuring that our residents get a wide variety of food to enjoy, as well as ensuring it fully meets their needs. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

SEAHAVEN HARD OF HEARING CLUB Our speaker this month was Ian Everest, who was talking about Shepherds of the South Downs – their lives and times. The earliest record of a shepherd was a gentleman called Cuthman of Bosham in West Sussex. He travelled around pushing his mother on a cart until he found work. He was said to have received a message from God that wherever he stopped next he was to build a house and a church. He stopped and built a wooden house and a wooden church. This was in the village of Steyning, West Sussex, and the church that stands now is on the site of the original wooden church. Cuthman worked as a shepherd and eventually became a Saint. Many churches in Sussex are named St Cuthman’s. John Elman is the shepherd who became known as the first man to breed South Down sheep, which became the favourite breed of sheep for many years (photo right). His tomb is in Glynde Cemetery. There is a saying ‘Guy Fawkes’ ram produces April fools lambs’. This is because the shepherds’ year starts in November when each ram serves approximately 50 sheep. The new lambs are born around April 1st. At lambing time a shepherd can be out 24 hours a day, making pens for the sheep and being on hand when the lambs are born. The shepherds used to be out in

all weathers until the shepherds huts’ were introduced, which was a godsend to the shepherds as they could go inside to make a hot drink and dry themselves off. Sheep washing had to be done once a year and Exceat was used for this purpose for farms in our area. Another place for sheep washing was Fulking, by the Shepherd and Dog pub, where a stream runs out by the side of the pub. Sheep also had to be dipped once a year, which was quite a dangerous job with the chemicals involved. Later in the year the sheep would be taken to markets to sell and for fresh sheep to be purchased. Thanks were given to Ian for an interesting talk, and the photographs were amazing. Tea, a raffle and a quiz followed before everyone went home. The lip reading classes were really interesting with subjects such as TV, cycling, chocolate and Fratterinies discussed. The new term started on Tuesday 19th April at Sutton Corner Barn (formerly the 60 plus club) at 10am. The next meeting on 6th May is an visit to Fairwarp for tea. The mini bus will leave St James’ at 2pm.

Jennifer was born in Cuckfield and spent her childhood in Brighton. Being an amateur iceskater from the age of 11, Jennifer had nine exciting years as a professional ice skater. Jennifer has particularly enjoyed one of the wider objects of Inner Wheel – to foster international understanding – and has enjoyed Zooming with Inner Wheel members in India. A visit to the Hove Inner Wheel Club lead to a friendship being formed with Varsha Patel from India, who was staying with her daughter in Hove.

Jubilee Quiz Night

We will be welcoming everyone – not just members – to our Jubilee Quiz Night Friday 3rd June 2022, 7pm in the Old Chapel Centre, Alfriston. Bring a team of up to six people and your own food and drink to join us for an evening of fun! Entry £1 a head. The Quiz night will be followed later in June with members’ Afternoon Tea and musical accompaniment in the garden of one of our group. We expect to be visiting our lovely twin village of Veules-les-Roses on the Normandy coast in July, and hosting our French friends for their return visit to Sussex in September. Business was efficiently carried out, leaving plenty of time for members to take tea, drink Kir Royale, and eat a wonderful selection of home-made sweet and savoury goodies. New members are always welcome, and membership is free this year – yes, fees have been waived for everyone in 2022! There’s no need to speak French – our events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish. Our membership secretary is Robert at: rmorri1847@aol.com.
