Meet Full Members, Gary and Stacy Price, who joined our Seabrook Island community just shy of 3 years ago. Both were born and raised in the mid-Atlantic and met as undergrads at the University of Delaware The Price family discovered Seabrook Island Club when their daughter relocated to Johns Island from Denver Having vacationed on Kiawah Island before, they were familiar with the area, however, they credit their son-in-law for telling them about Seabrook due to his work’s involvement with first responders and the St Johns Fire Department. The desire to be close to their family and live in a beach and golf community made Seabrook Island the perfect spot for them to build their home here on Baywood Drive.
As retirees, Gary, a former C-Suite Executive with Love’s Travel Stops, and Stacy, an RN, currently split their time 50/50 between Seabrook Island and their home outside of Atlanta in Reynolds Lake Oconee While on the island, they can be found playing golf, relaxing on the beach, or exploring on their bikes. Some of their hobbies include cooking, enjoying wine, and dining out with friends around the Charleston area Stacy is also a Member of SIPOA’s Artist Guild. Since the completion of their home just over a year ago, the Prices have been building endless memories here on Seabrook such as enjoying the festivities and fireworks at the Club with family on Independence Day Seabrook feels like home to Gary and Stacy because of their friendly neighborhood and the social opportunities provided by the Club and SIPOA
We are grateful to have Gary and Stacy Price as Members of the Seabrook Island Club!
If you would like to be featured in the next Member Spotlight, please reach out to membership@seabrookisland.com for more information.

Having a good pre-shot routine is very important Without one, you will be very inconsistent on the solidness of your strike as well as the direction the ball is flying. Here are 3 things that should be part of your pre-shot routine on both the practice range and on the golf course:
1. 2.
If you are missing the ball left or right, the first thing to look at is your grip If one or both hands are too far to the left, you will hit the ball to the right. If one or both hands are too far to the right, you will most likely hit the ball left. A good grip can be a quick fix for an offline golf ball.
Use an alignment stick to help with this You should think of parallel lines Your feet, shoulders, and hips should all be parallel to each other Be conscious that your hips or shoulders are not pointed to the right or left of your feet Everything should line up
3.
As the club you hit gets longer, the ball needs to move more forward in your set-up For example, wedges, and short irons should be about the middle of the stance The ball should slowly move closer to your front foot as the clubs get longer and you start working towards hitting the driver. If the ball is too far back in the stance with a longer club you won’t be able to properly hit down on the ball and will likely top it, hit it right, or do something in your body to try and help the ball up and catch it thin Conversely, if the ball is too far forward in your stance with a shorter club, the bottom of your arc will be behind the ball and there is a good chance you will hit the ground first
The Golf Professional Staff is always happy to assist you with any questions or help you may need with your golf game We’re excited to introduce our new private coaching tee on the Crooked Oaks side of the range Having this space available for game improvement will enhance our Member’s experience by allowing more privacy for instructional activities while also alleviating some of the congestion on the practice range We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to help you evolve in your golf journey, and ultimately have more fun playing better golf!

The golf courses are rounding into excellent form for the busy fall season as we have finished the intensive summer maintenance programs These programs help to prepare the courses for the upcoming year and leave them in great condition for you to enjoy throughout the seasons A few large items are in clear view as our team prepares for the CGA Senior Amateur Championship, Men’s Member Guest in September, and course seeding in October, all while typical golf activity is happening
It is an honor to host the Senior Championship as it is held at the best clubs throughout the Carolinas and is a primer for getting tournament-ready. Ocean Winds will be firmed up and fast for the tournament which will have us a bit ahead of schedule for the Member Guest that will be later in September
PhotoCreditJefferyDavis,SeabrookIslandPhotographyClub
The staff will be mowing all the short grass areas a good bit lower and much more frequently for these events to produce exceptional playing conditions A great deal of time and resources are allocated to getting the courses prepared for tournament conditions The courses can handle the stress for several weeks but cannot do so for long stretches of time The conditions that are presented inevitably bring out the question: Why can’t the courses be maintained at tournament level all the time? The turf can handle the stress for short periods but not for weeks on end without potentially fatal consequences. So, enjoy the quick conditions while you have them until we return to still high-quality, normal care.
As we turn the page to October and the rest of the year, we are reverting to our former seeding practices We will not be seeding wall to wall this year but will return to contrast over-seeding on all of Crooked Oaks, but only tees and greens on Ocean Winds While over-seeding is aesthetically pleasing and is great to play from in the late spring, it is hard on the underlying bermudagrass and can lead to poor turf quality in the summer that has to be repaired To provide variety between the courses, the fairways will be seeded on Crooked Oaks giving the green some contrast down the middle, as well as a seeded short grass experience Ocean will play much quicker without the winter rye and the lies will be tighter particularly as the bermudagrass goes dormant The rough on both sides will go dormant but will come out of the winter much healthier and will be green and growing by late spring This will offer the best of both worlds for your playing experience sans the rough and will lead to more consistent turf conditions throughout the year
We hope you have a great fall golf season, and we will see you on the course!
Sean Hardwick Director of Agronomy

The most exciting and anticipated addition to the Racquet Club project is the expansion of the pickleball facilities. To meet the surging popularity of this dynamic sport, five brand new pickleball courts have been constructed, supplementing the existing two This substantial increase in court availability will undoubtedly enhance the pickleball experience for Members of all skill levels and facilitate the expansion of the Club’s pickleball programs
The addition of pickleball courts offers a multitude of benefits for Seabrook Island Racquet Club Members, including:
Increased Access to Pickleball Courts: With more dedicated courts, Members can enjoy the game without having to wait too long for availability
Enhanced Playing Experience: The courts will be designed specifically for pickleball, ensuring a more enjoyable and competitive game for players of all skill levels.
Program Expansion: More courts equal more opportunities for clinics, private lessons, and the opportunity for ball machine usage
Fostering a Pickleball Community: Dedicated courts can create a hub for pickleball enthusiasts to gather, play, and socialize.
The completion of this expansion marks a significant milestone for the Seabrook Island Racquet Club The Club is committed to providing its Members with exceptional facilities and programs; this project is a testament to that dedication

The Seabrook Island Racquet Club and a dedicated group of volunteer tennis players are looking forward to a second year of partnering with the Third Serve Tennis Foundation to teach the game of tennis to students at Haut Gap Middle School.
The Third Serve Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization co-founded in 2021 by Jonathan Barth, Director of Tennis at the Roy Barth Tennis Center on Kiawah Island, and Bruce Hawtin, Director of the BarthHawtin Tennis Academy, also on Kiawah Island Third Serve’s mission is to introduce tennis to children in the Charleston area while fostering an environment that facilitates growth on and off the court Third Serve began its program at Edith L Frierson Elementary School on Wadmalaw Island, and through the volunteer efforts of Seabrookers, a second program with Haut Gap Middle School was started last September at the SIRC, running twice a week through May. Third Serve’s program is a recognized chapter of the USTA Foundation's National Junior Tennis and Learning Association Footprint Transit provided transportation between Haut Gap and Seabrook in the fall and the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in the spring, thanks to the excellent coordination skills of Nicole Grogan, Third Serve’s Assistant Director
The Haut Gap Seabrook program was a 100percent volunteer effort initiated by Rich Goheen, who had previously coached a small group of Haut Gap students at the two tennis courts behind the school. He saw the potential to serve a larger number of students at Seabrook. He recruited Jackie Cocchiola, who did a heroic job of recruiting and scheduling up to 23 volunteer coaches (all Seabrookers) to work with groups of 7 to 20 middle schoolers, Ken Steen, who made sure there were enough racquets, balls, shoes, and snacks for all the kids, Lucy Walton, who coordinated fundraising efforts, and Penny Lee, who was the parent and school liaison Everyone saw an improvement in the students’ fitness and tennis skills by the end of the year
The SIRC looks forward to another productive school year with the Haut Gap kids! Please contact Rich Goheen at rgoheen3@gmail.com if you’re interested in volunteering and/or donating to this very important program For more information, visit their website at www thirdservefoundation com
It happens all the time one day you're on top of the world, then everything gets flipped upside down the next day You never know when something good or bad is coming around the corner
Playing tennis or pickleball is the same way Some days, you can't miss a shot and look and feel like a pro on the court. The next day, everything either goes in the net or outside the lines.
Whether you are a local Club beginner or Novak Djokovic or Ben Johns, everyone experiences these emotions. Many players will make mistakes. An error-free performance is impossible for any player - even for professional players. However, the pros can make mistakes and move on, which is a key factor in being mentally tough The top players in the world can snap out of having negative thoughts or slumps within a game That's why they are professionals, but that's not to say Club players can't do it too
In his book, Djokovic states that he accepts his thoughts "as they come they do bounce around like crazy, but they're supposed to Your job is to let them come and go "
The next time you are playing a game or match, don't panic when those negative thoughts and emotions set in. Stop thinking how you have doublefaulted twice or missed two easy dinks in a row. Don't put pressure on yourself. Your opponent is probably experiencing the same thing.
Double faults will happen, forehands will hit the back fence, dinks will hit the net, and shots will be too high Stay resilient and stay positive At the beginning of each new point, forget what has happened previously, start anew, and move on
The quicker you adopt this mindset, the quicker you will get out of a slump Your mental toughness will improve from game to game, and you will start seeing positive results on the tennis and pickleball courts
Developing the skills and ability to volley and play up at the net effectively is essential for being a complete tennis player Whether it be after a highly effective serve or a well-constructed point from the baseline, transitioning to the net is the most advantageous position to be in to finish a point Although a player might have the advantage in court positioning at the net, it is important to have laser focus on certain key elements where aggressiveness, fast reflexes, and poise are needed
Before a ball is hit, the mentality and approach have to be aggressive You want to put yourself in a position to attack tougher shots, not just easy ones This means a player should consciously keep their energy, intensity, and attention to detail at their highest level to execute with authority and precision in these fast-paced situations
Racquet head up, elbows in front and off of your body, get low, and stay low Without a strong ready position before every shot, consistent volley execution will be difficult Often, missed volleys are a result of weak/casual-ready positions Have a strong, ready position, execute the volley, and recover right back into that strong, ready position until the point is over
Always be light on your feet to prepare yourself for the many quick movements needed. Land on the balls of your feet on your split step and take small steps throughout the volleying process.
Establish and keep your balance before, during, and after every volley Take as many steps as you need to prevent unbalanced moves or motions, such as lunging at the volley or falling forward after hitting the volley Loss of balance is the cause of many missed volleys
Although you are watching the ball, you should always be able to see your racquet peripherally, from the ready position to and through the finish of your volley Keeping the racquet in sight will help you maintain good racquet positioning and can keep you alert about your ready position Are you up and in front properly with the racquet? Or are you too casual? Keeping the racquet in sight is a good way to make sure you stay disciplined with your ready position When making the turn to the forehand or backhand volley, one should be able to see their racquet when preparing The backswing is too big if the racquet disappears out of the peripheral
The Seabrook Island community came together this spring for the Club’s first-ever Member-Member tennis tournament. Held from February to April, the event was a resounding success, fostering camaraderie and competition among players of all levels
A unique feature of the tournament was its compass format This innovative structure encouraged players to step outside their usual doubles partners and play with and against a variety of Club Members The result was a more inclusive and social atmosphere, allowing participants to connect with fellow tennis enthusiasts in a fun and relaxed setting
The tournament culminated in a celebratory luncheon and awards ceremony honoring the winners of the various doubles draws As players gathered to enjoy delicious food and fellowship, the event served as a perfect opportunity to reflect on the tournament's success and look forward to future competitions
Beyond the competitive spirit, the Member-Member tournament proved to be a valuable platform for building friendships and strengthening the tennis community on Seabrook Island It is clear that this event has become a cherished tradition, and players eagerly anticipate the next opportunity to compete and socialize.
The excitement continues to build as we eagerly anticipate the inaugural Pickleball Member-Member Tournament, scheduled for November 2024
Following the successful model of our tennis tournament, this event will feature the same engaging compass format, allowing players to connect with new partners and rivals on the court We can't wait to witness the community, competition, and fun that will undoubtedly unfold as pickleball enthusiasts come together for this exciting Member event

“After 30 years of moving around with the military, my family and I were ready to find a place to truly call home We explored almost every equestrian community in Kentucky, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina seeking a perfect match for us, as well as for our horses Nothing ever felt right until we stumbled upon Seabrook Island and the Equestrian Center From the moment we arrived, we felt an immediate sense of belonging that we hadn’t experienced anywhere else. It was as if we had finally found the place we were meant to be
Transitioning our horses, Nikko and Token, was a significant concern for us Having kept them on our property in Virginia for the past 10 years, we were unsure what to expect from the boarding process However, from the moment they stepped off the trailer in late July, it has been nothing short of wonderful
Charles, the Equestrian Director, and Allie, the Barn Manager, were there to greet us after our long overnight trip. They immediately took charge unloading the horses and escorting them to their stalls to get them settled in Seeing their warm welcome and efficient handling, we felt an immediate sense of relief
Charles looked at us and said, ‘Go home, relax, everything will be taken care of ’ His words gave us peace of mind knowing the horses were in the kindest, most capable hands
Since then, Nikko and Token have thrived The entire Seabrook Equestrian Center team has been incredibly supportive, providing excellent care and most importantly, love You can tell they truly love the horses and love what they do
As we settle into our new home, we are extremely grateful. We feel so blessed and honored to be a part of this community. Where else can you take a beautiful trail ride and a scenic beach ride in the same day? It’s truly magical One thing I know for sure, at Seabrook Island Equestrian Center, Life Is Good!”
