DANR Announces More Than $22 Million for Statewide Environmental Projects PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) has announced the Board of Water and Natural Resources approved $22,527,735 in grants and loans for drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste projects.
Revolving Fund Program, which provides low-interest loans for wastewater, storm water, water conservation, and nonpoint source projects. The program is funded through a combination of federal appropriations, loan repayments, and bonds.
The $22,527,735 total includes $440,735 in grants and $22,087,000 in low-interest loans.
The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling, and waste tire projects. The Legislature annually appropriates dedicated water and waste funding for the Consolidated and Solid Waste programs through the Governor’s Omnibus Water Funding Bill.
The grants and loans approved by the board will be administered through the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Grants were awarded to: • Watertown, $400,000 for landfill improvements • South Dakota Solid Waste Management Association, $34,000 to host the 2022 Manager of Landfill Operations course • Canistota, $6,735 to improve operations at the Canistota Restricted Use Site Loans were awarded to: • Mitchell, $11,087,000 for wastewater and watershed improvements and $11,000,000 for drinking water improvements The grants and loans were awarded from DANR’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program, Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program and Solid Waste Management Program. The State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fund the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program, which provides low-interest loans for public drinking water system projects. The program is funded through a combination of federal appropriations, loan repayments, and bonds.
The board approved the funding at their January meeting in Pierre. ■
