s a longtime car wash operator and member of SCWA – I have enjoyed the many benefits and resources our association has brought to my business.

Connected cameras track a vehicle from the pay station to the tunnel, ensuring that the equipment will provide the purchased services to the correct vehicle, Davy explains. Controllers also provide safety for the consumer by controlling the conveyor and other equipment, automatically pausing the tunnel when there is a problem.

This tight control can allow for customers to receive a custom “light show” in the tunnel as well, Davy states. This feature can create a unique experience for each customer based on what was selected and purchased. Modern controllers can even activate unique signage or special lighting for any visiting unlimited wash club members.

Having just returned from the SCWA Seattle Car Wash Tour I am reminded of one of the best benefits of SCWA - bringing the car wash world together. The Seattle Tour brought together over 100 car washers from many different states. The opportunity to talk with car wash owners from other areas of the country gave me a much broader perspective on the car wash industry and new ideas to implement in my operation. As one member said to me, “SCWA is truly the car wash world connection!”

EFFICIENT PROFITABILITY

Another advantage controllers enable is to-the-inch application of chemicals. This precise application means operators can effectively control their washes’ chemical costs. When set up correctly, equipment only sprays the vehicle, not the gap between vehicles, Davy notes. This to-the-inch application continues through the entire tunnel and applies to such services as ceramic coatings, wax applications and other necessary chemistry. This universal control not only saves on chemistry costs, but it also provides customers a better wash experience.

We often say “No one has all the answers and no one has the “secret” to a successful car wash operation”. But as we bring together successful car wash operators and learn “together” we all benefit and find better solutions and answers. Whether it is through our SCWA Mentors Connection; the Advocacy Outreach; the interaction with local government officials; the Car Wash Tours or the SCWA Convention & EXPO (to mention a few efforts) – our mission is to provide the relevant resources to help everyone be more successful. This is what enables SCWA to continue to make a difference in the car wash industry.

Energy efficiency can be another advantage. “Your tunnel controller also helps you save electricity by driving each piece of machinery in the tunnel, activating your vehicle frequency-driven devices and controlling signage and lighting around your facility,” Davy continues. “Additionally, your tunnel controller can help conserve energy by leaving your dryers on when multiple cars are in the tunnel, avoiding costly start-ups of the dryer system. Without wasting chemical or electricity, you are better able to control your per-car costs and make each service more profitable.”

Bath points to efficient look-ahead features in a carwash tunnel that can include the controller keeping the blowers running for the following vehicle. Again, this step saves energy and creates cost savings. “There are many features that can help operators save power, water, etc. When you understand all these modern-day features, your process will benefit as well as your cost savings,” Bath says.

The SCWA events are designed to provide our members with opportunities to network and share information and resources. While members that belong and participate in our association are sometimes competitors, I continue to be impressed with the cooperative spirit and professionalism our industry displays. I am a firm believer in the adage “all ships benefit from a rising tide”. I have seen this as a reality so many times in SCWA. The more we promote the car wash industry and help everyone be better operators – we all benefit and the car wash industry as a whole benefits. The result of participating in a SCWA and enjoying our events is an improvement in the overall industry’s business climate. Here, camera systems can provide on-site tracking and help avoid delays caused by a loader, which prevents slowed productivity and missed rollers. Inside the tunnel, cameras can even stop the conveyor when the vehicle is not where it is supposed to be, Davy states. Stopping the tunnel can prevent costly accidents and the downtime they create. These anti-collision systems allow a carwash to run vehicles closer together, further increasing valuable throughput and revenue on busy days.

Vehicle proximity devices, such as sonar, help identify features on vehicles so a wash can provide a better clean, Davy notes. For example, these devices can detect the windshield location, allowing for special windshield wash services or side mirror rinses. It is also possible to identify truck beds, allowing a wash to automatically turn off devices. This can prevent too much soap from being dumped into the truck bed or turn off blowers so they will not blow debris out of the bed onto other vehicles.

EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES WILL FEEL

THE IMPACT OF THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL LABOR

he Big Beautiful Bill was signed into law on July 4, 2025. Employers must now prepare for labor shortages, missing employees, and heightened I-9 scrutiny. The Bill pours an additional $170.7 billion into immigration and boarder enforcement-related activities. The agencies which receive this influx of revenue have a lot of discretion and no oversight.

$45 billion will go directly to building new immigration detention centers. On September 5, 2025, the Board of Immigration Appeals (“BIA”) issued a decision declaring that immigration judges do not have the authority to conduct bond hearings. This means that undocumented persons detained by ICE will no longer have the right to go before a judge to determine their eligibility for bond. The ripple effect of mandatory detention will impact employers who will suffer labor shortages.

Employers must prepare for the reality that their workforce,

acting out of desperation, will agree to deportation rather than waiting one to two years in detention facilities for their day in court. On top of that, with increased interagency collaboration, such as the 287 (g) program which allows local law enforcement to have the same authority as ICE agents,’ employers will notice that a lot of employees are no longer showing up to work.

Employees pulled over during routine traffic stops now face detention and deportation.

Adding to the threat of labor shortages is the reality that DHS can deport detained persons to any country that is willing to accept them. On June 23, 2025, the United States Supreme Court lifted the nation-wide injunction

FINAL RESULTS

If maintained correctly, the final results provided by closed-loop carwashing should rival conventional wash quality, the NWI team states. The path to achieve this quality is not without some increased maintenance requirements and equipment costs. But, these factors should be weighed against the savings of reduced water and sewer costs to determine the feasibility and profitability of closed-loop operation.

Ideally, a closed-loop wash is using completely biodegradable chemicals, operating a true restoration system that removes chemicals from the water and following the manufacturer’s required maintenance, Gibney concludes. If so, customers will not be able to tell any difference in wash quality compared to the use of fresh water.

Could someone step in and successfully manage your financial affairs if you are unable to do so yourself? Of course, you could execute a "financial power of attorney'' designating someone as a "financial agent" to act on your behalf in financial matters if you're incapacitated. But just drafting that document with an attorney, which you should do, doesn't guarantee that this relative, friend or adviser will know what to do. The issue isn't so much whether he/ she lacks financial savvy-it's that figuring out someone else's finances on the fly is a massive challenge. Having a financial plan in place for health emergencies is especially on many people's minds now because of the coronavirus pandemic, but an incapacitating emergency could come up at any time. SIMPLIFY IN ADVANCE

Consolidate credit cards and bank accounts. Missed credit card payments are among the most common missteps when someone takes over your finances. The more cards you use, the greater the odds that there will be a problem. Cut back to only two, if possible.

Along with the looming threat of labor shortages is the reality that I-9 audits will continue to multiple. With the infusion of cash DHS is preparing to employ more ICE agents. A top priority for the Trump Administration is workplace compliance. To get employers to comply with federal immigration law DHS issues large monetary fines for technical and substantive violations. ICE has the authority to fine individual stores. For example, from 2018 to 2021 ICE agents audited 20 Walmart stores resulting in Notices of Intent to Fine each individual store. In all, Walmart accumulated $24.2 million dollars in ICE fines for their failure to use the proper electronic I-9 software.

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT FOR CAR WASHES EXPLAINED: WHY DO YOU NEED ONE? MARKETING

n the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, two children are abandoned in the forest and have to find their way home. It’s not exactly a lighthearted bedtime story, but it does give us a little lesson about resourcefulness. The first time Hansel and Gretel are sent into the woods, Hansel drops small white pebbles along the path and the pebbles glimmer in the moonlight, creating a clear trail they can follow safely back home. The second time their terrible parents try to abandon them in the forest, Hansel can’t gather enough pebbles so he drops breadcrumbs instead. The children aren’t able to find their way home because the birds eat the breadcrumbs and the trail disappears. A digital footprint works the same way - it’s the scattering of traces your business leaves across the internet that allows customers to find you, follow you, and decide if they trust you.

Just like Hansel dropped white pebbles to guide the way home, your digital footprint is made up of the things you leave behind online, both intentional and unintentional. Some of these markers you place on purpose: posting on social media, publishing blogs, filling out your Google Business Profile, running promotions, or replying to reviews. Brown Bear was an excellent host for the recent SCWA Car Wash Tour. We appreciate all the efforts from Lance and the Brown Bear family to make the tour very successful.

Victor Odermat opened the first Brown Bear Car Wash on 15th Avenue West in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood in 1957, and that location is still in operation today.

When Brown Bear opened in 1957

• And “All Shook Up” by Elvis Presley was the top hit on the radio.

The Brown Bear Charity Car Wash Program, based on the same criteria as the SCWA Charity Car Wash Alliance, offers an effective car wash fundraiser alternative for qualifying no-profit organizations. Non-profit groups can sell car wash tickets for the tunnel car wash locations to raise funds for their groups.

BROWN BEAR CAR WASH – KINGSGATE

Kingsgate Car Wash location was purchased in early 2023. It is a conveyor tunnel and is a converted bank building. This location is one of our newer free vacuum sites even though it is a market that does not need them.

BROWN BEAR CAR WASH – LYNNWOOD

The Lynwood location was built about 7 years ago. It is a conveyor tunnel only and directly competes with Quick Qwack. We converted to Free Vacuums to test the market and compete with the car wash market in the area.

BROWN BEAR CAR WASH – GILMAN, ISSAQUAH

Gilman Blvd Car Wash was purchased in 2016. The wash is a tunnel model only. It was an abandoned Shell gas station and highly contaminated. Securing even the demo permit took several years. The construction permit took several more. We finally were able to open the site last year. Issaquah is a very difficult city to obtain permits. The storm water vault and infrastructure requirements ran around $1.0 million alone. This facility includes paid vacuums.

BROWN BEAR CAR WASH – ISSAQUAH

Issaquah Car Wash was built in 1990-1991. This location includes a conveyor tunnel; self serve, and fuel options. Three self serve bays were sacrificed for pay stations around 6-8 years ago. We purchased the land in the late 1980s when it was rural and there was not much infrastructure surrounding the property.

Some thought my dad was crazy for doing it. Costco’s World Headquarters is a block away. Costco tried to build a car wash nearby but were denied the permitting by the City of Issaquah.

Needless to say, this is the site that peaked Costco’s interest in entering the industry. This location includes paid vacuums.

et me be brutally honest. Hitting 10,000-plus memberships sold in a single year at one location was not magic. It was not luck. It was a relentless, systems-driven obsession with value, conversion and retention. Forget fluffy theories. This is the gritty, real-world blueprint of how we did it.

It all starts at the pay station

The pay station is your frontline, and your frontline team is either your biggest asset or your biggest bottleneck. If you are serious about membership growth, you cannot just staff it. You must sell it.

I started by standing out there myself. Talking to customers. Testing pitches. Tracking reactions. Then I hired a dedicated sales specialist. Not just an attendant, but someone who saw every customer as a conversation, not a transaction.

From there, I built a team around that role. And here is where we got strategic. We hired student athletes. Why? They are coachable. Competitive. Disciplined. They respond to goals, they handle pressure and they want to win.

We did not sit back and wait for customers to figure it out. We converted in the moment, right after they experienced a great wash.

We incentivized our team with $10/$15/$20 bonuses per paid signup. We role-played daily. We used tablets to show personalized savings based on customer visit history. And we kept the sign-up process under 90 seconds.

Tactic: Make conversion part of your site’s rhythm. It is not about being pushy. It is about catching customers in the moment of satisfaction, when they are most likely to say yes.

The Chippewa Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) awarded OhmCo Carwash Marketing the Grand Prize at the BEAR ’25 Pitch Competition. OhmCo Carwash Marketing wins BEAR competition recognition as a Wisconsin-based leader in carwash marketing and technology solutions. The “Shark Tank” for growth-stage businesses drew together investors, mentors and entrepreneurs from across the state.

Founded in Neenah, Wisconsin, OhmCo quickly became a recognized name in the national carwash industry. The company provides marketing, web development and technology platforms to carwash operators across the U.S. The company’s win at BEAR ’25 underscores the increasing recognition of the carwash industry’s economic contribution to Wisconsin and beyond.

The grand prize secures OhmCo with guaranteed pitch opportunities with major investor groups. This reflects significant interest in the company’s growth trajectory. With more than seven years in business, OhmCo has a successful track record in the carwash industry. OhmCo’s leadership team sees this recognition as a launchpad toward expanding services and staff in Wisconsin.

OPW names David Malinas as new president OPW announced that the company appointed David Malinas as the OPW new president, effective immediately. Malinas brings more than 20 years of operational leadership experience to his new role. He most recently served as chief operating officer of Duravant, a global automation equipment company headquartered in Chicago. Before

Malinas returns to Dover with extensive company knowledge. He first joined in 2019 as senior vice president of operations and held the role for nearly four years. During that time, he led Dover’s manufacturing strategy development and execution. He focused on footprint optimization, continuous improvement, supply chain efficiency and quality enhancement. He drove profitable growth across Dover’s operating companies.

The Wash Tub donation aids Kerrville flood relief

The Wash Tub donation of $50,000 to the Kerr County Relief Fund is a gift responding to the devastating floods that struck the Kerrville region in July. The carwash’s team, loyal customers and the Kerrville community all contributed to the donation. In hardship, standing together defines community spirit. The Wash Tub feels honored to serve as part of that support system.

The Wash Tub presented the donation during a ceremony at its Kerrville location on Friday, Aug. 8. The Kerr County Relief Fund will use the money to directly support local residents and businesses affected by the flood. The organization provides essential aid to those most in need.

“We’ve been a part of the Kerrville community for many years,” Giovanni Vizza, operating partner, added. “Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the flooding. We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our customers and our team, and we hope this contribution brings comfort and meaningful assistance to those facing difficult days ahead.”

Whitney Wilson joins Qual Chem operations team

Qual Chem continues to grow its family with the announcement of Whitney Wilson as account coordinator. She will serve on the operations team in Akron, Ohio. Wilson brings experience in customer service, organization and leadership to her new role.

She also has hands-on expertise in the carwash industry. Wilson feels passionate about building strong relationships. She works to ensure a smooth, positive experience for customers and teammates.

Outside of work, Wilson’s energy and enthusiasm shine through her many interests. She loves cooking, playing rugby, gardening, and spending time with her two dogs, Jym and Moses. Her dogs keep her life full of fun and surprises. Her caring nature and willingness to help wherever needed make her a perfect fit for the Qual Chem family.

Autobell awards $150,000 scholarships to 158 team members

Autobell Car Wash is awarding scholarships to 158 team members across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware for the 2025–2026 academic year. This year’s gifts total $150,000.

The company created the program to recognize notable achievements of team members. The program also encourages continued education. The Autobell Car Wash Scholarship Program has provided more than $2.4 million in funds. The program has helped over 2,200 recipients since its launch in 2000.

Wash Concepts Donates $28K

Express Wash Concepts (EWC), parent company of Clean Express Auto Wash, donated $28,450 to Cleveland Guardians Charities as part of its fourth annual CLE Inspires Week. The donation was raised August 22–24, when Clean Express offered a special “Guardians Shine + Ceramic” wash for $15. For every wash purchased, $10 was donated directly to Cleveland Guardians Charities, and customers were entered to win exclusive prizes from both Clean Express and the Cleveland Guardians.

Driven Brands Names COO

Driven Brands Holdings’ board of directors has appointed Mo Khalid as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Driven Brands. Khalid currently serves as executive vice president and president of Take 5. Tim Austin, chief operating officer of Take 5, will succeed Khalid as the president of Take 5.

“Mo is an exceptional leader with a proven track record of success,” said Danny Rivera, president and CEO of Driven Brands. “As President of Take 5, he helped grow the business to more than 1,200 locations as of June 28, 2025, and systemwide sales exceeding $1.5 billion on a trailing 12-month basis. He strengthened operations, built a highly capable team, and delivered results through analytical rigor and a disciplined focus on execution. In his new role, Mo will help drive that same operational rigor across all of Driven Brands.”

Khalid re-joined Driven Brands in 2023 as group president of the maintenance segment, which at the time included Take 5 Oil Change and Meineke. He previously served as chief operating officer of Meineke from 2016 to 2017. From 2017 to 2023, he held senior operating roles at Great Wolf Resorts, ultimately serving as SVP of field operations. Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Burger King, Deutsche Bank, and J.P. Morgan Chase. He holds a B.S. in finance from Rutgers Business School and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

The SCWA NextGen 30 Under 30 will identify and honor raising car wash industry leaders who have demonstrated outstanding skills in their position and have made a significant contribution to the success of their company. The criteria the Committee and Board will consider include:

t takes more than a month to nail down good habits. A common belief is that a good-for-you habit takes a month to become part of your routine. Recent study: Actually, it took 59 to 66 days -and sometimes much longer- for healthful habits, such as eating better or exercising more, to take hold. For many, 335 days was needed to incorporate improved lifestyle habits. Helpful: Incorporating the desired habit in your morning routine increases the speed of adoption. A habit that you enjoy -such as a pleasurable form of exercise rather than one that is stressful or unpleasant- also has a better chance of sticking.

Less sleep, higher hypertension risk. Recent finding:

Compared with people who slept seven to eight hours per night, those who slept six to seven hours were 4% more likely to develop hypertension...and those who slept less than six hours were 17% more likely. The risk for hypertension associated with shorter sleep time was greater among women and people under age 60 than in other groups.

nsuring an electric vehicle is costly, warns auto researcher Michael DeLong. Despite fewer moving parts, EVs generally cost more to insure than traditional cars. That’s because they are more expensive, fewer shops can work on them, and the average repair takes three hours versus two for an internal-combustion car. As more EVs take to the roads and mechanics gain experience, insurance costs should come down. Meanwhile, shop for the best deal-which may or may not include the insurance offered by the EV’s manufacturer.

Newer diabetes drugs’ heart protection vs. age. Recent finding: SGLT2-inhibitors (canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin) were associated with greater reductions in major cardiovascular events in older patients...even though there is a smaller reduction in A1c, a measure of blood-sugar control, compared with GLP-1 agonists. On the other hand, GLP-1 agonists (dulaglutide, liraglutide, semaglutide) were associated with greater A1c reductions with increasing age... but are more cardioprotective in younger people.

Should you leave outside lights on overnight? Pros: A well-lit exterior helps discourage would-be thieves as well as deters wild critters from approaching your home. Exterior lights make it easier and safer for late deliveries of packages and for guests or members of the household to navigate walkways without stumbling. Cons: An outside light may illuminate only an easy-entry point, not all the places where wild creatures or would-be thieves can get into your house. Lights at night also have a harmful impact on biorhythms of nocturnal creatures, especially migrating birds. Good solution: Motionactivated lights that cover your property-not just your door.

Long-term-care insurance providers are hiking rates, says consultant Glenn S. Daily. Faced with steep increases, policyholders must choose between paying up or reducing benefits to have lower premium rates. State regulators are taking action, and newer policies typically have been spared. If you’re faced with an increase you can’t afford, try a combination of a lower daily benefit and a shorter benefit period, but keep your inflation benefits. Note: Older policies provide an attractive benefit/cost ratio, so if you can afford the increase, that still may be your best option.

Broken-heart syndrome is deadlier for men. Medically known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), broken-heart syndrome is a weakening of the heart muscle caused by physical or emotional stress. Both men and women with TC often have serious complications-35.9% suffer congestive heart failure...20.7%, atrial fibrillation...6.6%, cardiogenic shock, a form of inadequate blood flow to the body’s organs...5.3%, stroke...and 3.4%, cardiac arrest. Recent finding: While TC is more common in women, deaths are more than twice as likely in men-11.2% of men with TC die.... compared with 5.5% of women, TC caused by physical stress is more common in men, which may explain the higher death rate, and hormones also may be a factor.

Discount medical insurance scams: Consumers are losing millions of dollars each year by responding to unsolicited texts and phone calls promising reduced rates on medical insurance. Victims often are pressured to act quickly and to cancel their old policies, leaving them uninsured. Selfdefense: Verify through your state insurance commissioner that any policy offer comes from a reputable source licensed in your state. Make sure your providers accept the plan you’re considering. Never pay upfront. Ask for policy documents... if these aren’t forthcoming, it is probably a scam. And as always, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
