PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE RYAN DARBY, SCWA PRESIDENT Each year the SCWA Board of Directors holds a Leadership Planning Retreat to evaluate the past year and develop strategies for the coming year. This is a regular meeting to assure we stay true to the mission and vision for SCWA. It also reminds us of the leadership responsibilities we have to stay focused on our founding principle – being member driven. Over the past 30 plus years SCWA has enjoyed steady and very successful growth.

• Our conventions have grown from hotels to large

convention centers; the SCWA Convention & EXPO continues to expand in recognition, attendance and booth space.

• ADVANTAGE publication has grown from a four page

flyer to the four color - 40 plus page magazine distributed to our membership and national industry leaders.

• SCWA communications have expanded to our website, social platforms, legislative reviews and weekly email industry updates.

• Our membership has grown to include car wash operators from over 40 states.

• SCWA advocacy efforts have received national attention. As I participated in the most recent meeting – I realized how important this discussion is to the continued success of SCWA. But even more I realized how important it may be for all our members to be a part of this discussion. With this in mind, I wanted to share some of the highlights of the principles and mission that drive the success of SCWA. WHO IS SCWA Southwest Car Wash Association is an independent, nonprofit association of members who have interests in or operate businesses in the car wash industry. SCWA MISSION Bring ALL the car wash community together in a common bond to protect and promote the ability of our members to own, operate and grow in a business friendly environment. SCWA ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS

• BE THE GLUE….provide the leadership and unifying

link within the car wash industry for our members. Build public awareness, recognition, knowledge and support for the professional car wash member.

• BE THE FIRST LINE of DEFENSE or OFFENSE….on

legislative, regulatory and business issues related to the car wash industry or car washing as a business. SCWA is the primary advocate for the car wash industry and our members.

• BE AN EDUCATIONAL & INFORMATIONAL

RESOURCE….for the member including a first class convention; industry recognized EXPO; relevant industry and legislative communications; informational website, engaged social media; workshops and webinars.

• BE A MODEL of PROFESSIONALISM….through the establishment and practice of high ethical standards; development of professional and practical business practices.

• TWO MOST IMPORTANT SCWA FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES…..

• SCWA IS A BUSINESS and must operate within and practice sound business and financial principles.

• SCWA IS MEMBER DRIVEN – we exist to solve the

problems of our members and provide our membership with the relevant resources and programs for our members to be successful.

As the SCWA President this year, I am honored to continue to promote these principles that have brought SCWA to where we are today. The work of many dedicated leaders and members past and present have built the foundation we all enjoy. It is now our responsibility as leaders and invested members to understand the SCWA mission as we all look to the future of the car wash industry. With this goal in mind we will be able to support our car wash member operators and owners at an even higher level. When we think about this challenge, it motivates us to work harder. As an SCWA member your support and membership assures us that we are making a difference. Thank you for being the most important part of SCWA. We ask for your continued support and always look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions. Mark your calendars for upcoming SCWA events: August 31 – SCWA Car Wash Tour in Boise, Idaho October 12 – SCWA Wade Welch Memorial Golf Classic February 22-24, 2023 – SCWA Convention & EXPO at the Fort Worth Convention Center. HOW TO INCREASE YOUR IBA REVENUE WITH EXTRA SERVICES MARKETING F

or the United States vehicle wash industry, early signs indicate that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was less than might have been expected. Sure, preliminary figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show a decline in vehicle use last year, but according to a market survey by the International Carwash Association, the industry was in a position of strength as it entered 2020, with more than 2 billion vehicles washed in 2019. This assertion that vehicle washing did not become an afterthought in 2020 is buttressed by informal feedback from vehicle wash distributors that shows that chemical sales, along with the number of washes, remained strong in 2020, which is surprisingly good news at a time when so many other industries are struggling. As we head into 2021, there are several revenue strategies and new service offering opportunities for operators of vehicle wash locations that feature touchless or softtouch in-bay automatic (IBA) wash systems, whether they are traditional standalone operations or retail fueling/ convenience store sites. One of the key benefits of IBAs is that they require a smaller physical footprint compared to traditional tunnels and are less expensive to operate, mainly because they do not require a dedicated staff to facilitate the wash process. Many drivers prefer touchless/soft-touch IBAs because of their gentle handling of the vehicle. Drivers also appreciate the many wash options that can be made available, creating a wash menu that ranges from the most basic to a top-ofthe-line experience. With so many ancillary wash services now available, IBA operators must develop a strategic plan when constructing

their wash packages and pricing structure, one that optimizes the effects of the ancillary offerings. Specifically, an a la carte-type pricing menu does not always make sense. For example, if you call something a “premium” wash and charge $13 for it, does it make sense to ask the driver for an additional $3 for a high-gloss finish or targeted tire treatment? Does that make the upgraded wash “super premium?” Instead, we are seeing more operators raise the price of a premium wash while offering the full suite of services with no optional add-on costs. This is a good approach to take because more and more drivers are using credit cards to pay for their washes, which just involves insertion or a simple swipe through a card reader, not digging through a wallet or purse to see if they have the exact amount of cash on hand to pay for the service. In terms of specific additional services that can be a boon to generating ancillary revenue, three stand out, all of which have been used by the operators of tunnel washes for some years, but can be easily adapted for use in IBA systems:

• Ceramic Coating: This is a newer technology that has

gained popularity in the tunnel market and is now available to IBA operators. In the ceramic coating application, a low pressure layer of “ceramic” chemical is applied to the vehicle via the wash’s spray arms, with the result being a really smooth high-gloss finish on every vehicle surface, including paint, trim and glass. IBA operators that have begun offering ceramic finishes are seeing that drivers are willing to pay $2 to $3 more for this option.

• High-Gloss Finishes: Part of the so-called “lava and ADVANTAGE 7

lights” experience that so many drivers and their passengers find appealing, these application systems drape the vehicle in a thick sheet of multi-colored highgloss wax while strategically placed LED lights flash on and off during the wash process. The result is a wash experience that keeps the customer engaged in the process while simultaneously ensuring that the vehicle emerges from the wash bay with a clean, high-gloss finish.

• Tire Treatments: This service is quite common in

conveyorized tunnel systems, but advances in the way that the tire treatment equipment is deployed can now make this a profitable additional service for IBA operators. There are currently two notable options for wash operators:

» High-pressure wheel “blasters” featuring a pair of

stacked spinners on each side of the wash bay that are equipped with zero-degree nozzles that wash the tires at multiple angles

» Advanced tire shine equipment that allow the extension of the application brushes to meet the vehicle’s tires. This has made available a lucrative tunnel-only extra service to in-bay operators who can now leverage an extra service for which customers have shown a willingness to pay a premium.

More than ever, drivers want value when they wash their vehicles, but at the same time, they are looking for more than a “basic” wash – even, it appears, during the height of

a global pandemic that has forced many people to modify their usual driving habits. While drivers are willing to pay more for a “premium” wash, they will only continue to do so if the additional services they receive are deemed to be worth the added cost, even long after they have left the wash bay. To that end, there is now a new suite of extra service options – many of which were once considered “tunnel only” – available to IBA wash operators. If properly deployed, these services can lead to more satisfied customers and a significant boost to the wash operation’s revenue stream and bottom line. -Kris Oliver, OPW Vehicle Wash Solutions

SEAN O’BRIEN CONVENTION ATTENDEE HIGHLIGHT SCWA NEWS SCWA is proud to introduce and highlight our friend, Sean O’Brien.

Sean was diagnosed at age 4 with Tuberous Sclerosis

(TS), a rare genetic condition that causes the growth of non-malignant tumors in various organs and leads to an increased risk of epilepsy, autism, developmental delay. There is no cure for TS, and when Sean was diagnosed, the seizures he suffered and medication given for the seizures damaged his cognitive abilities. Though TS has damaged Sean’s body, it’s been unable to diminish the joy his quiet kindness brings his family and friends and the enthusiasm he has for life. His favorite hobby is learning about and seeing commercial carwashes. Each year, he visits numerous carwashes, but the highlight of the year for him is the annual SCWA Convention & EXPO. He looks forward to it more than Christmas or his birthday. “I remember Sean’s first SCWA Convention in Arlington. It was difficult for him to engage or communicate, but it was so easy to feel his love for the car wash industry. That first year he brought a small cardboard model of a car wash that he had made for the occasion and carried it with him for the entire EXPO. Each night of the convention before going to bed, he would go to the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel to see the SCWA logo illuminated in the lobby waterfall. Fast forward to 2022 and you can see by the pictures of Sean at this year’s SCWA Convention & EXPO, that he has definitely found his happy place in the industry and with the SCWA Members. I treasure the smiles and hugs Sean, now, readily gives, “ Jane Space, SCWA Convention Management.

Sean’s family asked to express their gratitude to the Southwest Car Wash Association for making his visits possible and treating him as an honored guest. SCWA looks forward to seeing Sean in 2023.

Industry Briefs continued...

Suds Brothers Express Carwash has announced its plans to

build a new express wash in downtown Dripping Springs, Texas. The site is located on W. Hwy. 290, which runs directly through the center of town. Suds Brothers reports that it is looking forward to building a wash that serves the community. The wash was designed specifically with the historic downtown Dripping Springs and the Hill Country landscape in mind. The facility will be utilizing industry-leading equipment, such as a conveyor belt system, 25 free high-powered vacuums (each equipped with compressed air), microfiber towels and mat cleaners. Suds Brothers recycles 90% of the water used in every wash.

Bluebird Express Car Wash announced construction plans

for its next three locations. The sites will be located on Overland Rd. in Meridian, Idaho; on Franklin Rd. near I-84 in Caldwell, Idaho; and a third location in Emmett, Idaho. The Meridian site has been in the planning stages since 2019 and construction is slated to begin in June 2022. It will be the sixth location in the Blue bird Express Car Wash portfolio. Bluebird has been working on a Caldwell location for several

years and the company is looking forward to finally serving the Caldwell community. Its seventh location in Caldwell will begin construction this summer; the eighth location will be in the heart of Emmett, Idaho. The owners of Bluebird currently own and operate three other Bluebird Express Car Washes, with the fourth location under construction on State St. in Boise, Idaho.

GO Car Wash announced that after one month of its

partnership with One Tree Planted, the company will be planting 35,708 trees in Susanville, California. This comes after GO Car Wash’s promise to plant a tree for every new monthly membership sold since Feb. 14, 2022. The company organized an online vote, allowing members to select their preferred locations for new trees to be planted and California was the winner. The partnership’s reforestation efforts in the Susanville, California, area are particularly timely as this area was recently damaged by wildfires, and the benefits of replanting trees on over 2,000 acres of land are enormous.

BIG LEAGUE CAR WASH MEMBER HIGHLIGHT SCWA members are often featured in national car wash publications. Recently SCWA member Daniel McCutchen was highlighted in Professional Car Washing & Detailing.

As spring weather is welcomed across the nation and

the days get longer and warmer, a spring and summer pastime — largely referred to as America’s favorite pastime — begins. The 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) season officially began on Thursday, April 7, when professional baseball players took to the field and fans took to the grandstands in ballparks from New York City to Los Angeles. But, in New Braunfels, Texas, one major leaguer has stepped off the field and into the carwash tunnel. After retiring from an 11-year run as a professional baseball pitcher, most notably playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Daniel McCutchen took his earnings and created Big League Car Wash, a baseball themed express carwash brand that now has two locations in New Braunfels. After the idea for Big League Car Wash had been developing in McCutchen’s mind for years, it officially opened in November 2017, just a year after McCutchen’s retirement from baseball. On this quick career switch, he jokes, “Now, I say I played professional baseball for 11 years so I could have a really cool carwash theme.” Rookie inspiration While still playing baseball, McCutchen became interested in the carwashing industry after his brother-in-law, Tyler Furney, began Today’s Car Wash, an express carwash and detailing brand with seven locations throughout central Texas. After his brother-in-law and later mentor piqued his interest in the carwash industry, McCutchen began noticing carwashes while traveling for baseball. MLB teams spend multiple months either in Florida or Arizona for spring training, which McCutchen says was the perfect environment to start planning his own carwash business. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau 2019 study, Florida specifically has the third most carwash establishments out of all 50 U.S. states. “I remember the first time I bought a membership during spring training,” recalled McCutchen, “it was the first time I went

to a carwash with compressed air for detailing and blowing off the mirrors … I jotted that down in my little notebook noting, ‘When I build a carwash, I’m having this for sure.’” Of course, McCutchen had mentors, like Furney, to help him out along the way. “I had some great mentors … my brother-in-law, Tyler, and Clayton Clark, who founded WhiteWater Express, is one of my good buddies that really mentored me along the way too. I had some great people there to mentor me, but a lot of the stuff I did on my own,” he reflects, noting that Big League Car Wash was largely a one-man operation at the beginning. “I was just trying to do the same thing I did in baseball.” In the first six months of operation, McCutchen worked 80-hour weeks. “I was here at the wash all day, every day, making sure the operation was going like I wanted it to go,” he explains. Game on Moving forward, the Big League Car Wash team is in expansion mode, with hopes to have five washes in operation in 2023. For now, Big League will most likely operate exclusively in the New Braunfels, Texas, region, but McCutchen believes he has created a great wash structure and is open to future growth. “I just kind of play it one carwash at a time, but I love what I’m doing and building a really good team around me. So, who knows how big we’ll get?,” he says. While building current sites, the former professional athlete plays defensively. In the current carwash climate of quick growth, which includes bigger brands buying out the minor leaguers, so-to-speak, McCutchen focuses on defense as much as offense. “I am looking for the best location on any given street.

LESSONS FROM GOLF TO HELP YOU MASTER THE GAME OF LIFE PERSPECTIVE “Golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course,”

said legendary golfer Bobby Jones, “the space between your ears.” Every sport has a mental component, but the between-theears aspect is especially pronounced on the links because golfers have time to think. This isn’t tennis - the ball doesn’t come flying back at you moments after it’s hit. There’s time to plan how to handle the next shot... then to begin to doubt that plan...worry whether something is wrong with your swing...and ruminate about what went wrong on the last hole. Result: Overthinking and underperforming. Here’s how to handle the mental hurdles in the game of golf - and how those lessons apply to life off the course... Consistent results are best achieved by not focusing on results. Consistency is at the core of golf: an ability to reliably hit good shots is more valuable than the ability to occasionally hit great ones. But counterintuitively, when golfers are on the course, they need to pay less attention to the consistency of their shots. Golfers who focus on shot-by-shot results often try to make adjustments: My last shot went too far left, so I’ll aim this one a little right...or Maybe I’ll make some minor modification to my swing. The following shot went too far right, so I’ll aim back left or tweak my swing again. Soon these golfers are either playing “army golf” -left, right, left, right- or they’ve completely lost the swing they carefully honed on the range. More effective way to achieve consistent results: Accept that some shots will not land where intended -that’s just the nature of golf, and life - and instead strive to have a consistent pre-shot routine. If you can accomplish that, your results will become more consistent over time. This consistent pre-shot routine should include the following four steps... 1. Do your homework. Check the lie and distance to the hole. 2. Form a plan. Pick a target and a club. That target won’t always be the pin-sometimes it will be the middle of the green, the middle of the fairway or some other landmark. 3. See and feel the shot. Visualize the shot you intend to make-or “feel” the shot if you’re not by nature a visual learner. The shot you imagine should be within your abilities and should be a desired outcome...it should not be a mental warning to avoid a negative outcome. Telling yourself, Don’t hit it in the bunker or Don’t shank it might lead you to do exactly that, or it might lead you to

overcompensate. What it isn’t likely to do is increase your odds of achieving your desired outcome. 4. Commit. Follow through on your plan without waffling. Amateur golfers sometimes rethink their plans as they stand over the ball, perhaps opting for a slightly different target or putting line. That’s almost always a mistake - a plan created during calm and careful preparations is very likely to be stronger than one triggered by last-minute fearinduced doubt. That’s true off the golf course as well - you’re almost certainly better off trusting a carefully constructed plan that’s rooted in logic over in-the-moment second thoughts that are rooted in panic. The only reason to change a plan in the heat of the moment is if the situation has changed for example, if the wind shifts as you stand over your ball. But a rushed rethink is not the answer even here - instead, calmly step back and start your pre-shot routine from scratch. Hold a single, simple thought in your mind as you swing. This thought might be tempo, balance, target, trajectory or something else related to the execution of your golf shot. It should not be directly related to the desired result of the shot - it isn’t helpful to think birdie, for example. If there’s some aspect of your swing that you’ve been working on with a coach, it might make sense to choose a single thought related to that. What’s most important which shot-execution-related thought you choose, but that you choose only one. Having a single, simple thought in mind helps focus your attention. Trying to hold several thoughts in mind is more likely to create an unhelpful sense of being overwhelmed...and having no particular thought in mind increases the odds that distracting thoughts or poorly timed moments of doubt will creep in. Helpful: Choose a different single thought for putts if the thought used for other shots doesn’t apply well. Line or pace are among the best putting thoughts. This one-simple-thought strategy can be effective in highpressure moments off the golf course as well. Example: Auction bidders and professional investors sometimes ADVANTAGE 27

wash site. If designed properly, operators can put the gift card swipes in the bays, on vacuums, vending machines, air machines, mat cleaners and other compatible equipment. This gives customers the flexibility to use any piece of equipment on the property with a single card. “If a customer has to choose between a site with swipes only in the bay versus a site with them on all TM pieces of equipment, I think we all know where they are going,” Walter says. “Keep in mind, customers choose a wash for many reasons, but two of the top reasons are speed and convenience. Both of these are achieved with the abovementioned flexible payment options.”

CREATING PROFITABILITY The pinnacle of performance.

To push profitability on a self-serve site, Walter suggests that operators find ways to keep customers happy and in the bay longer. Self-serve owners should remember that they are in the business of selling time. Walter shares some questions operators should consider: Call today for a and freewell-lit? sample! • Are the bays clean 1-888-783-SOAP • Does the gun or wand leak all over the customer? • Do you have good pressure, soap, wax and presoak inapchemical.com the bay? • How do the chemicals smell and look on the vehicle? • As an operator, how would you rate the experience in the bay?

• Does the wash have doors on the bay, and are they closed on cold days? Once a customer is relatively comfortable in the bay, other additional profit opportunities can be evaluated, Reclaim Water Walter notes. Outside of the basicDeodorizer meter box functions, offering carnauba-based waxes, air dryers or ceramicinfused products can help keep customers in the bay longer. As previously mentioned, offering multiple forms of payment can increase revenue and maximize profitability. McCarty explains that there are several ways for operators to push a site’s profitability. Wash appearance is the first consideration, and operators should: • Make sure carwash bays are clean • Make sure trash cans are emptied • Make sure no weeds are growing around or in the wash. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so make sure the carwash facility is nice, clean and inviting,” McCarty says. Inside the bay, operators should make certain that the functions are working as they should and that the equipment is delivering plenty of chemical for each, McCarty recommends. This ensures a wash is giving customers their money’s worth. Next, ask the chemical provider for products with vibrant colors and great smells. 19 Customers will spend more time in the bay spraying on chemical products that look like they are “painting the

retend to like someone...even when you don’t. Tips from professional actors can help for those times when you must interact with some one you really don’t like - such as a boss, a colleague, a friend’s spouse or an in-law. Pretend he/she is someone else - imagining that you’re talking to someone you genuinely do like can help you get through the interaction. Ask questions - this is a good way to give the other person the impression that you like him/her, even when you don’t...and again, it makes the time go by faster. Find something you do like about the person - even with someone you can’t stand, there is likely some thing you have in common...find what it is and run with it.

Mail is being stolen from post office boxes, warns scam

expert Steven J.J. Weisman, Esq. Dropping mail into a blue post office collection box has long been considered safe. But thieves are pulling mail out of older boxes that have pulldown openings... stealing keys from carriers...and offering carriers money for their keys. Better: Drop sensitive mail into the outgoing mail slot inside a post office. Use a gel pen for checks you intend to mail - gel pen ink is difficult to remove, reducing the odds that a crook could rewrite your checks to himself/herself.

ew tick-borne disease concern. Recent finding: Heartland virus, a disease spread by lone star ticks, has been found in one of every 2,000 ticks sampled in Georgia. The disease was first found in Missouri in 2009, and since then about 50 confirmed cases in 11 states have been reported. Of particular concern is that the disease found in Georgia ticks has a different genome from what has been found elsewhere possibly indicating that the virus is evolving as it spreads. Symptoms include fever, fatigue and muscle and joint pain. Patients may require hospitalization, and the virus is potentially fatal. Problem: The disease is still not well understood, so it is possible that many more people have been infected but had only mild symptoms.

Staying hydrated protects your heart. Recent finding:

People with high levels of serum sodium, an indication of dehydration, during middle age were 54% more likely to develop heart failure in later years than people whose middle age serum sodium levels were in the normal range. Those with the highest serum sodium levels also were 102% more likely to develop left ventricular hypertrophy, a condition in which the = heart muscle becomes thickened and the heart pumps blood less efficiently. The human body requires adequate fluids to support many functions, including circulation. Recommended: Most healthy people need about four to six glasses of water daily, adjusted for body size, physical activity, health conditions and temperature of the environment. Fluid does not have to be water - milk, juice, herbal teas, tea and coffee (including caffeinated and decaffeinated), and many fruits and vegetables also are hydrating.
