Welcome to the Inaugural issue of Scuttlebutt Gulf Coast. A publication dedicated to life around boating in the waters of SW Florida.
Some of you Northerners may already be familiar with the original Scuttlebutt publication, Great Lakes Scuttlebutt, which was founded in 1992 by Jerry Kyle. Jerry quickly established a “free” magazine model with distribution at marinas, yacht clubs, boat shows, marine retailers and boat dealer locations. After working the western basin of Lake Erie and western Lake St. Clair for nine years with great success, Jerry retired and passed the magazine responsibilities to his son, Erik Kyle. Erik again expanded the publications reach to all the Great Lakes, took the magazine to glossy format and added digital extensions, website, Scuttlebitts eNewsletter, social media outlets, as well as a digital replica of the magazine available for access anywhere.
I first discovered Great Lakes Scuttlebutt 15 years ago as a reader picking up copies at my marina office. My family recently relocated to SW Florida, and I came on board to establish this Scuttlebutt expansion which will serve the boating communities as far north as Tampa/St. Pete all the way down to Marco Island.
This is a lifestyle publication that will help educate you on the various boating grounds throughout SW Florida, new boat models and accessories coming out and most importantly, information that will help keep your current vessel in top shape as well as help you become a better, more educated boater. Each
issue, you’ll find a destination feature, with this first one on Ft Myers. Ft Myers has had its battles with Hurricane Ian, and more recently, Helene and Milton, and its resilience offers many attractions and places for boaters to explore. As new issues come out, you’ll find a new destination to explore and learn about in SW Florida. You’ll not want to miss Part 1 of our 3 part series on how to obtain your Captain’s license, training and more training (classroom scenarios and even an option in VR!), options for storing your boat and more. Don’t miss the cover feature on Formula’s brand new 457CC; we have a feeling you’ll picture yourself aboard one in Bimini also.
You’ll be able to pick up six new issues a year at 400+ locations throughout SW Florida. We are thrilled to bring this first issue to you and a big thank you to our advertising partners who make bringing this magazine to you a reality. This is your magazine, if you’d like to see a topic or destination covered, we want to hear from you, feel free to drop us a line at editorial@scuttlebutt.com. As we grow, we’ll be adding information that will make Scuttlebutt Gulf Coast a true reference piece. Follow our progress through our print, digital, and social extensions, and we’ll see you on the water.

Ah, Florida—the land of eternal sunshine, swaying palm trees, and endless waterways. Whether you’re zipping around the Gulf of Mexico, cruising down the Intracoastal Waterway, or exploring the Florida Keys, boating here is a way of life. But what happens when the fun in the sun is done, and it’s time to put your boat away for a while? That’s where the right boat storage solution comes into play, making all the difference between a stress-free day on the water and a logistical nightmare.
First up, we have indoor dry stack storage, a popular choice for many boaters in Florida. This is the equivalent of valet parking for your boat, but with the added bonus of full protection from the elements. Your boat is hoisted up on a forklift and tucked away into a multi-level rack system inside a covered building. This keeps it safe from sun damage, rain, wind, and even those pesky hurricanes that can pop up during Florida’s storm season. A perfect option for our seasonal visitors.
The best part? Indoor dry stack storage usually comes with some first-class concierge services. Want your boat in the water by 10 a.m. on Saturday? Just use the marina’s app to make a reservation, and they'll have it waiting for you, cooler stocked, fueled up and ready to go. When you're done with your day on the water, simply hand over the keys, and they'll clean it up, flush the engine, and store it back on the rack. It's like having your own personal crew of dockhands to handle all the details!
Not only does indoor dry stack storage protect your boat from the elements, but it also helps maintain its value by keeping it in pristine condition. No more worries about sunfaded upholstery, corrosion or unexpected marine growth on the hull—just your beautiful boat that's ready to go whenever you are.
If you prefer to have your boat in the water and ready to go at a moment's notice, then a wet slip might be more your style. Wet slips are essentially parking spots for your boat at the marina, with amenities ranging from basic docking to full-service slip concierge options.
Imagine this: you roll up to the marina, and your boat is already in the water, tied up and gleaming. Maybe you asked for the full concierge treatment, so all your needs for your boating adventure will be ready for you onboard. After a long day out, you just glide back into your slip, and the marina staff takes care of everything—fueling, washing, and securing your boat. No muss, no fuss!
Wet slips are especially popular with those who have larger boats or yachts, as they provide easy access to the water and a home base for weekend adventures. This option is ideal for transients and liveaboards. Many marinas also offer electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, and access to their luxurious amenities.
For those looking for a straightforward and effective storage option, outdoor rack storage is a great choice. Your boat is stored on racks, usually several feet above the ground, which keeps it safe from potential flooding and marine growth. Using a boat cover will protect it from the weather.
And just because it’s simpler doesn’t mean you miss out on the services. Many marinas offering outdoor rack storage still provide the great concierge services like boat washing, fueling, and engine flushing. It's a solid option for boaters who want a balance of convenience and cost-effectiveness.
Maybe you're the kind of boater who likes to explore different waters every weekend, from the Everglades to the Atlantic coast. In that case, trailer storage might be your best bet. Many marinas in Florida offer secure trailer storage, so you can easily hitch up and head out on a new adventure whenever the mood strikes.
While this option requires a bit more effort on your part, some marinas take the edge off by offering launch and retrieval services. You drive up with your trailer, and the marina staff will launch your boat for you. When you return, they'll pull it out of the water, rinse it off, and even secure it back on the trailer.
Now, let’s dive into the real luxury—concierge services that turn your boating experience into a lavish affair. The best marinas in Florida don't just offer boat storage; they offer a boating lifestyle that’s all about pampering. Need your boat stocked with your favorite snacks, drinks, towels or sunscreen? Done. Want a quick wash and refuel so you can just take off and enjoy the day? No problem.
The marinas go above and beyond, providing additional perks like on-water fueling services, and even exclusive access to events and activities. Need a mechanic to give your boat a once-over? They've got that covered too. You’re not just a customer; you’re a VIP, and the staff makes sure you feel like one every time you step into the marina.
Florida marinas also spoil boaters with amenities that rival high end resorts. Think, heated pools, hot tubs, fitness centers, restaurants and even lounge areas to provide a great place to unwind before or after a day on the water. Some marinas host social events like fishing tournaments, cookouts, and boating workshops, creating a vibrant community for boaters to connect and share their love for the water.
In the end, choosing the right boat storage and concierge services in Florida is about finding what suits your boating lifestyle best. Whether you prefer the quick access of a wet slip, the protective care of indoor dry stack storage, the simplicity of outdoor rack storage, or the flexibility of trailer storage, there’s a perfect option waiting for you. And with all the concierge services and amenities available, you’ll be cruising in style and comfort, with more time to focus on what really matters—enjoying the sun, sea, and endless adventures that Florida has to offer.
THE ONLY COMPLETE UNDERWAY STABILIZATION SYSTEM INTRODUCES TWO NEW PRODUCTS FOR BOATS UP TO ~42 FEET.
Seakeeper, Inc., the leader in marine motion control, announced the addition of two new systems to their underway stabilization product line, Seakeeper Ride. Designed for boats ~37-42 feet (11-13 meters), Seakeeper Ride 750 and Seakeeper Ride 750 Quad join their three existing systems in eliminating up to 70% of underway pitch and roll on boats as small as 19 feet.
While the two new systems are designed for the same sized vessels, the controller sizes and the transoms they serve differ. The Seakeeper Ride 750 system consists of two larger controllers and will fit most vessels in this size range, whereas the Seakeeper Ride 750 Quad system has four smaller controllers and is suitable for unique transoms that may have hull design elements that restrict available space. Both the Seakeeper Ride 750 and Seakeeper Ride 750 Quad systems were designed with aluminum components, a deviation from previous products for purposes of added strength.
“Since the launch of Seakeeper Ride two years ago, large boat owners have been asking for a larger Ride system,” said Seakeeper President and CEO Andrew Semprevivo. “With expert modifications to our existing design and extensive tests, we are ready to deliver the ‘wow’ boaters have come to expect from us with, not just one, but two products for this size range, to make sure every boater can experience complete underway stabilization.”
The Seakeeper Ride 750 system retails for $17,500, and the Seakeeper Ride 750 Quad system retails for $20,500. Shipments will begin in mid-October.
Seakeeper Ride offers systems for boats ~19-42 feet and is available for stepped or non-stepped, fiberglass or aluminum hulls with a cruising speed greater than 20 mph and equipped with a compatible MFD. Seakeeper Ride controllers mount to the boat’s transom below the waterline. Using proprietary inertial sensing hardware and software, the system takes 1,000 measurements per second to understand the boat’s behavior in all three axes. It then commands deployment of custom-designed rotary blades, making 100 adjustments per second, to create lift that automatically manages the vessel’s motions.
Seakeeper Ride is standard equipment on many popular boat models, including those from Sportsman, Scout, Chris-Craft, Jupiter, Tidewater, Edgewater, Key West, SeaHunter, Parker, and more. To view a list of models with Seakeeper Ride as standard equipment, visit ride.seakeeper.com/standard. It is also available for refit through a global partner network. To locate a dealer, visit ride.seakeeper.com/find-us
YEAH, FEELS LIKE THAT.
Seakeeper Ride is a complete underway stabilization system that replaces traditional trim tabs by automatically making 100 adjustments every second to eliminate up to 70% of pitch and roll and the pounding that comes with them.

Much of Southwest Florida’s earliest, most colorful history can be found on and around the barrier islands that dot its coastline. Because their beauty can be enjoyed by land or water, these islands are popular among boaters and beachcombers. They also have long been a Mecca for explorers, including Ponce de Leon who discovered Sanibel and Captiva in 1513. By 1900, sea captains and farmers were homesteading the islands. And in 1925, inventor Clarence Chadwick converted Captiva into a key lime plantation. Today, Chadwick’s plantation is the 330acre South Seas Resort. This tropical, resort paradise is a prime vacation destination, complete with a marina, golf course and upscale restaurants.
For an “island experience” and to learn more about the wildlife and history of the area, Tropic Star of Pine Island offers a variety of on-the-water adventures from Pineland Marina on Pine Island. The 59-passenger “Tropic Star” offers full- and half-day narrated nature cruises to Cayo Costa and Cabbage Key. On the way, guests encounter two natural bird rookery islands, along with dolphins, manatees and other wildlife. During the cruise, passengers learn about the ecosystem, mangrove islands and history of the area.
The passenger ferry, the “Cayo Costa Star,” transports visitors for a day or overnight to Cayo Costa State Park to enjoy the beaches, shelling, nature trails and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Captiva Cruises is another cruising ship that will take you to Cayo Costa as well as Cabbage Key. The ship leaves from Captiva island where there are multiple different cruises to choose from. Cayo Costa shelling and beach day as well as lunch on Cabbage Key aren’t the only destinations. If you've admired captains on fishing charters, dinner cruises, or other commercial vessels and thought, "That looks fun! I should look into it," you’ve come to the right place. This is the first part of a three-part series to guide aspiring mariners on the path to becoming a captain.
You may be wondering about the reasons and requirements for obtaining a captain's license. Capt. Casey from Captain School notes that their students come from various backgrounds—many of whom are not from a boating background—and there are numerous good reasons to pursue a captain's license.
When interviewed, some of the most common reasons for getting a license are:
1. Beginner's Education: Many students relocate from different parts of the U.S. or other countries and are unfamiliar with local boating laws and regulations. Navigating new waters—beyond just lakes—requires advanced knowledge. While some may never work as licensed captains, they take steps to become more proficient in their skills and help protect friends and family while on the water.
2. Continuing Education: In Southwest Florida, two organizations contribute significantly to boating education: the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadron.
They offer excellent beginner courses, giving students a head start on becoming licensed captains. Those who complete these courses gain basic navigational skills such as finding a position, using latitude and longitude coordinates on a chart, understanding aids to navigation (ATONs), and essential terms like “red right returning.”
3. Career Change or New Business: This is a popular reason in Southwest Florida. Many people already in the boating industry or those who own boats want to generate enough income to cover boat payments, docking fees, and fuel costs. Others, such as local fishermen, possess knowledge of prime fishing spots and wish to monetize their hobby. Captain School is also honored to collaborate with local law enforcement, who may need a license to advance into marine patrol or fireboat operations, as well as for post-retirement income.
There’s also a growing trend of individuals offering sightseeing and environmental tours—either on their own vessels or through excursion companies. Tiki-style boats for daily tours in Southwest Florida have also become wildly popular. Some people obtain licenses for unique services like sea burials, scuba diving, sightseeing, dolphin tours, or weddings (note: you must also be a notary to perform marriages, or else the marriage is only good for the duration of the voyage.)
Innovative realtors have even begun using boats to showcase properties along the canals which has proven to be very effective. Assistance towing companies like BoatUS and Sea Tow also require licensed captains to help boaters in distress.
Whether your motivation is personal or professional, there are plenty of reasons to become a licensed captain, especially since a license is required whenever money changes hands.
Next?
Part two of this series will outline the requirements for obtaining a captain's license and how to renew it every five years—even if it has been expired for 3-4 years—without returning to school.

In an exciting development for boating enthusiasts, NauticEd, a global leader in sailing education, has partnered with MarineVerse to launch a cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) training program, designed for both sailors and powerboaters. Using the MetaQuest VR headset, this program offers an immersive and highly realistic training experience that mimics the physics of real-world boating. This isn’t a game –it’s serious, effective training aimed at enhancing the skills of all boaters, from beginners to seasoned captains.
Much like how pilots use virtual reality to stay current on their skills, boaters can now train in VR to master critical maneuvers and gain hands-on experience without stepping foot on a dock. The program is designed to accelerate learning and help trainees achieve true competence. “This is not gaming,” says Grant Headifen, Global Director of Education for NauticEd. “Students who participate in the VR training experience accelerated learning and gain competence faster because they can repeat exercises and develop muscle memory, which is crucial when it comes to boating.”
The VR boating training program offers three core courses, each catering to essential boating skills.
The first and foundational course, called Self Mastery Sailing, is an all-in-one learning environment where trainees can truly experience the dynamics of sailing. The VR environment allows users to sail a boat in various conditions and learn to set the sails for every possible wind angle. By being fully
immersed in the experience, sailors develop a deeper understanding of how their boat responds to different wind conditions and can practice fine-tuning their sail trim, a critical skill that takes years to master on the water alone.
The beauty of this program is that it allows learners to train at their own pace, revisiting lessons as often as they need. Whether you are just starting out or looking to brush up on advanced sailing techniques, the virtual environment offers a safe and effective way to do so. This program is particularly useful for new sailors who may not have regular access to a boat but want to build solid sailing skills before hitting the water.
The second program focuses on a fun but crucial element of boating: learning the navigation rules that govern our waterways. Boaters must navigate down a waterway filled with navigation marks, passing boats, and hazards. The course even includes night navigation scenarios, complete with navigation lights, to help boaters familiarize themselves with real-world conditions.
This training is critical for both powerboaters and sailboaters alike, as failure to follow these rules can result in accidents. By incorporating International Navigation Rules, this course ensures that boaters are fully prepared for the intricacies of real-world navigation. The VR environment makes it easy to practice and internalize these rules, reducing the chance of mistakes on the water.
The third training program offers what is perhaps one of the most important – and stressful – skills for any boater: docking. The Marina Maneuvering course trains boaters in how to maneuver their vessel in tight spaces, simulating the real-world physics of docking. The program mimics the effects of windage, prop walk, and boat drift, providing an incredibly realistic environment for practicing boat handling in a marina.
Grant Headifen emphasizes how this program saves both money and embarrassment. “In VR, the worst ding you can get is banging your knee into the couch at home. In a real marina, however, not being an expert can lead to expensive gel coat dings and stressful situations.” The ability to adjust wind conditions and marina configurations in the VR program ensures that boaters are prepared for any scenario they might encounter in real life.
Retired Lt. Col. Edward O’Connor, an ex-Navy Top Gun Instructor, is an advocate for the NauticEd/MarineVerse VR program. “I did hundreds of aircraft carrier landings in VR before I ever did one in real life. Why should mastering boat docking be any different? The NauticEd/MarineVerse VR docking program allows users to simulate real conditions, changing wind speed and direction with just a dropdown selection.”
Virtual reality is not a new concept in professional training. In the aviation world, pilots have long used flight simulators to maintain their skills and practice complex maneuvers. Military personnel, surgeons, and even professional athletes
are leveraging the power of VR for skill development. The key reason VR is so effective is that it allows for the repetition of critical actions without the risks or costs associated with real-world practice. The same principle applies to boating.
With VR, boaters can repeat challenging maneuvers until they become second nature, accelerating their competency. Trainees can quickly build muscle memory, which is essential for developing the instinctive reactions needed during stressful or complex situations on the water.
The NauticEd/MarineVerse partnership is clear in its message: this is not a game, but real training in a real physics environment. The virtual world is designed to mimic the actual conditions boaters face, from the way the boat handles in various wind conditions to the physical effects of docking. This innovative training method provides a handson, risk-free experience that can help both sailors and powerboaters improve their skills, avoid costly mistakes, and build confidence on the water.
For more information on how to take your boating skills to the next level with VR training, visit NauticEd's Virtual Reality Sailing Course.
Whether you are new to boating or a seasoned pro looking to sharpen your skills, NauticEd’s VR training offers a powerful, accessible way to build competence and confidence. Don’t let this revolutionary training pass you by—step into the future of boating education today.

SPRINGFIELD, Va., August 28, 2024 -- The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is seeking a diverse panel of volunteers who will serve as peer reviewers to evaluate proposals for Abandoned and Derelict Vessel (ADV) removal grants between December 2024 and July 2025.
The Foundation has been awarded a four-year, $10 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to clean up and improve safety along coastal areas by removing abandoned and damaged boats from our nation’s waterways and the Great Lakes. Reviewers will be part of this national effort to improve the environment and remove unsightly vessels from our waters.
Volunteers with backgrounds in marine debris management, the boating industry, education, non-profits, government agencies, marketing and outreach, grant management, financial analysis, project evaluation, impact assessment, as well as legal or regulatory fields are encouraged to apply. Reviewers are asked to commit to at least one review cycle (2-3 months) with an expected time commitment of 25 hours per cycle that includes independent review of proposals and 4-8 hours of virtual meetings.
How to Apply:
Prospective grant reviewers are encouraged to learn more about the BoatUS Foundation Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Program. To apply, visit boatus.org/advgrant/reviewer
“This is a coordinated, impactful investment to remove abandoned and derelict vessels, and we’re proud to help NOAA carry out this important mission to rid our shores and waterways of marine debris,” said BoatUS Foundation president Heather Lougheed. “Our goal over the next four years is to focus on the immediate issue – the substantial number of ADVs that need removal.”
Lougheed added that in the future, the BoatUS Foundation hopes to expand the program to inland freshwater lakes and waterways, and reach a point where ADV removals diminish as educational and preventive efforts have greater impact.
“It’s much more cost-effective to prevent owners from abandoning their boats by showing them other options that are available to dispose of a vessel that’s no longer seaworthy,” Lougheed said.
By being part of this program, volunteers will help remove the harmful pollution and safety hazards caused by ADVs, ensuring a positive impact on the environment and our waters for years to come.
Founded by fishing guides during south Florida’s devastating 2016 water crisis, Captains For Clean Water is a grassroots 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working to restore and protect Florida’s delicate water resources.
Decades of poor water management practices have devastated estuaries and water quality across the state, sustained by lack of public awareness and political will. Lake Okeechobee, at the heart of the state, can get covered with toxic blue-green algae, especially during the warmer, summer months. When the lake gets too high, water managers discharge massive amounts of polluted lake water to Florida’s east and west coasts— threatening human health, supercharging red tide, killing marine life, and crippling Florida’s economy for months.
This problem is perpetuated by one special interest group—the industrial sugarcane industry—south of Lake Okeechobee who uses the lake as their personal reservoir to irrigate their crops. “Big Sugar” is not only a major polluter but uses their incredible amount of purchased political clout to get water managers to manage Lake Okeechobee and the entire Everglades system in a way that benefits them while all other users suffer the consequences.
The long-term solution to reduce harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee and stop compounding the issues that impact Florida’s coasts is Everglades restoration.
In 2000, Congress approved the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a multi-billiondollar plan to save a national treasure. CERP includes 68 different project components necessary to complete the restoration puzzle and restore the connected ecosystems of the Greater Everglades. Key elements of the plan are in various stages of planning, construction, and implementation by the state and federal 50/50 partnership between the South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Everglades restoration is the largest wetland ecosystem restoration project ever undertaken in the world. It includes critical infrastructure projects like the EAA Reservoir, that will send more beneficial water south from Lake O to the Everglades and Florida Bay where it historically flowed and is desperately needed. Once complete, Everglades restoration will provide significant relief, but it is a long-term project that will take years more to complete. This is why public awareness and engagement is critically important to create political pressure and ensure these solutions reach the finish line without further delays or bureaucratic holdups.
Since the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) was authorized by Congress in 2000, very little progress had been made on the suite of 68 projects in the first two decades.
Together with their army of supporters, Captains For Clean Water (CFCW) turned the tide and, today, more progress is happening than ever before. They have rallied the outdoor industry to the forefront of the clean water movement, uniting them with Florida’s tourism industry, conservation groups, impacted communities, and government agencies to effectively raise awareness and advance Everglades restoration progress.
Since their founding, CFCW has mobilized hundreds of thousands of their supporters to actively participate in advocacy calls-to-action, attributing to clean water progress such as the Water Resources Development Act of 2018 being signed into law, the authorization of the EAA Reservoir, and continuing to secure record amounts of state funding for Everglades restoration and water resource projects in recent history.
Captains’ efforts don’t come without opposition. The organization faces a powerful resistance against their efforts—counter measures employed by special interest groups that benefit from the status quo, at the expense of all others. As the organization scales, they continue to lift the curtain, protect progress, educate the masses, and welcome thousands of new people to join their mission to restore and protect aquatic ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.
