Just last month the hurricane season forecasts started to come in calling for an above-normal season predicting possibly 4 major hurricanes that may or may not affect the Gulf Coast of Florida. This May/Jun issue is going to be an annual Hurricane Preparation focused issue so we hope you find good information and we’ll plan on expanding information in subsequent years because we all know hurricanes are becoming more frequent and more destructive.
Before you delve into the hurricane coverage be sure to check out our Destination feature on Marco Island which starts on Page 26 and will provide you with ideas on where to boat and sites to visit in the Marco Island area.
As boaters in SW Florida there are those who trailer their boats, keep in a slip, store in high & drys as well as keep a boat on a lift or at a dock at their homes. In this issue you will find information on how to store your boat, secure it prior to pending storms and what to do if you have the most unfortunate situation happen and have a boat that is now Salvage. For boaters with homes on the water, you’ll find some great information and products that will help you with your seawall, dock and lifts.
In this issue we are introducing two new pages that you’ll now find each issue going forward. On Page 42 you’ll encounter the Marine Resource Guide which provides listings on companies and services of all types for boaters. On Page 43 you’ll find Marine App Must Have’s which is a listing of apps every boater should have on their phone and backup devices. Whether it’s an app to guide you to your destination, weather, you’ll find something for every situation to make your boating experience more enjoyable. You’ll even find an app to locate pump out locations and while not technically an app, a Google map Dock & Dine Map of SWFL that loads right on to your Google map on your device for a small fee. With hurricane season approaching, it’s time to think about the boat and make sure you’re prepared for a “worst case scenario”. Storms are increasing with frequency and severity, and the “it’s not that big a deal” approach to hurricane prep is long out of date. Make sure you’re covered and what to expect in the case you find your boat in a salvage situation.
Know your insurance policy’s salvage coverage, as well as wreck removal coverage. The first provides for safe removal of the boat after being impacted by a storm, and the vessel is headed for repair. The latter cleans up a wreck for disposal.
Now check your policy’s limits for salvage and wreck removal. Ensure that the costs for salvage and wreck removal are covered in addition to your hull coverage and cover both the removal and disposal of the boat, if needed.
Keep in mind that if your boat ends up in an area that requires a lot of equipment and labor to salvage, such as land cranes, barges and other transportation, salvage/wreck removal costs add up quickly.
If you have an “actual cash value” or “liability only” policy, be sure to understand what the policy allows for salvage and wreck removal. If you’re not comfortable with those limits, speak to your insurer. They may be able to give you some other options. Also know that named-storm deductibles are common with all boat policies.
If your boat ends up in a salvage situation, when it comes to pollution, a sad fact is hurricane damaged boats may leak fuel or oil. Ensure that your policy has a separate line on the declaration page for pollution coverage up to the federal maximum limit of $1,076,000. Again, better boat insurance policies offer this pollution coverage separate from the policy’s liability coverage.
While it’s not a limit, another check on the policy is to see if it includes a “Hurricane Haul-out” or storm provision that helps pay the cost to remove your boat from the water or hire a captain to move it to a safer location.
Now you need to think about your own hurricane plan customized to your boat, which recognizes your specific needs – whether your boat is stored in the water, on a lift, in a canal or other location. If it can be trailered, get your boat out of the water and preferably moved inland. If the boat has to stay in a slip, get windage removed, double lines and seal hatches, doors and windows. If the boat is ashore make sure it’s secured properly to keep from toppling into boats next to it. Remove boats from lifts but if not an option, raise it as high as possible and install lines from the boat to the cradle or pilings to keep it straight when surge waters recede.
These are just the highlights of some common hurricane plans. BoatUS has the full details available to any boater, including a downloadable guide and preparation worksheet for boaters, as well as information for marinas and boat clubs at BoatUS.com/ hurricanes.
The storm has passed and you did the best you could to secure your boat but the conditions were too much for even the best preparation plans. What do I do now?
Attempt to find your boat, your goal now is to try to prevent any additional damage, but keep your safety in mind. Putting a tarp on the boat or other measures can help, but don’t crawl over a pile of boats. Never access a marina or storage yard without permission. The post storm recovery landscape can leave marinas extremely hazardous, with spilled fuel creating a serious fire hazard as I saw in Hurricane Sandy.
If insured, call your insurance company. Now is the time to rely on the policy you paid for. They will be able to tap into their network of salvage companies to arrange for the salvage or wreck removal of your boat – a difficult thing to do on your own. This is where having professional help can take care of things. Fly-by-night salvors may cause additional damage.
If you’re uninsured, or your liability-only policy limits salvage costs, understand you are still 100% responsible for salvaging the boat or removing the wreck from the water. Many states, including Florida, are very attuned to preventing abandoned derelict vessels, and will come down hard on you if fail to remove your boat or wreck, potentially revoking your ability to register any motor vehicle in the state and up to and including heavy fines, prison time and full restitution to the state.
Some local on-water towing companies, including TowBoatUS locations, may be able to offer professional salvage services so you may want to start there. This is where you need to find a reputable salvage service. Understand this process may take weeks, depending on the losses in your area.
Also know that on-water towing services typically exclude salvage because your boat will almost always be deemed “inperil” after a hurricane, so you can’t rely on your towing plan membership for help. Salvage costs may run several hundred dollars per foot for simple jobs but can get pricey if a lot of equipment, time and expertise is needed. I’ve seen boats in backyard pools, or far inshore in environmentally sensitive areas or other unique circumstances. This is where having a good insurance policy is the best defense.
Becoming one of the more than 725,000 BoatUS members is easy. Just go to BoatUS.com and click on “Become a Member.” Membership starts at $25 with add ons available for towing and trailering. Give yourself a fighting chance with Boat Lift Lock
First Came the Problem: Boat owner seeks device to stop damaging movement during storm. That was the question Keith was asking himself in September 2022, as Hurricane Ian barreled toward Ft. Myers, Florida. After 35 years of solving problems as an installation specialist for an equipment manufacturer, he faced a problem for which he could not find a ready-made solution — how to keep his boat from moving in the lift in high winds. There was no device on the market that would meet his requirements for superior construction, reliable performance, and ease of operation.
The intention of the Boat Lift Lock system was to develop an easily deployable system to secure the entire boat lift to pilings and help hold the boat in position in high wind and tidal surge events. We essentially wanted to give homeowners a fighting chance when boats could not be removed from lifts. The whole system can be deployed in around 5 minutes with no tools required at all. Boat Lift Lock Patent Pending design forms a rigid, solid structure to help stop the boat lift from moving.
What you won’t find on the Coast Guard checklist, or in most articles written about preparing your boat for a hurricane, is information about how to prepare your boat lift for a hurricane. With the Boat Lift Lock, it’s as easy as raising your boat on the lift and using the already installed adjustable arms to pin your boat lift in place. Even if you choose to remove your boat to offsite storage, you’ll want to secure your lift. That will help prevent damage to it or to your pilings from wind-driven movement.
We have multiple patent pending systems that cover all boat lift types. Our standard system for full access to all sections of the lift and pilings, modified side mounts for lifts where access to normal position will not work, extra strong system for the oversized lifts and our latest system “OPLS” Outer Piling Locking System which was designed specifically for people that have no access to the outside of their lifts. OPLS automatically engages the outer pilings to form a solid rigid system for your boat lift. This system combined with our patent pending turnbuckle arms provides a rigid system to keep boat lifts and pilings from moving during storms. All our systems deploy in less than 5 minutes, can be locked for added theft protection and require no tools for deployment.
Designed and is manufactured proudly by us here in the USA. All materials used are marine grade to support the demanding requirements to last and support during severe weather.
Complete customer satisfaction is our goal! We want to make sure you are using the Boat Lift Lock to its fullest potential. We keep records of each installation and follow up with our customers to ensure their complete satisfaction with the product and process. For quotes & other inquiries, call 833-239-5222 or email boatliftlock@gmail.com
Visit our website at www.boatliftlock.com for more information on how to secure your Boat Lift Lock system. We have something for every boat lift!

Hurricane preparedness is crucial for boaters living in coastal areas. The risks associated with hurricanes, including high winds, storm surges, and severe flooding, can cause catastrophic damage to vessels and property. Taking proactive steps to secure a boat before a storm can help prevent damage, reduce legal liability, and increase the chances of a successful recovery. The following guide outlines essential strategies for hurricane preparation and post-storm recovery.
1. Preventing Damage to Your Boat –While no measures can fully guarantee protection, a well-thought-out hurricane plan significantly increases the chances of minimizing damage.
2. Avoiding Damage to Other Property –Boats that are improperly secured may break loose and damage other vessels, docks, and buildings.
3. Legal Liability Risks – Owners may be held legally responsible for damages caused by their unsecured boats. Insurance companies may deny claims if negligence is determined.
Staying Diligent in Monitoring Potential Storms
Regularly check forecasts from sources such as the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) and local weather advisories.
Pay attention to early storm formation and potential tracks to allow sufficient time for preparation.
Understand that waiting until an official hurricane warning may not provide enough time to complete necessary preparations.
Understanding Hurricane Risks
• Storm Surges and Flooding – These account for 90% of hurricane-related fatalities. The geography of coastal areas, particularly in Florida, makes them highly susceptible to extreme tidal actions.
• Violent Winds – Hurricane-force winds range from 75 mph (Category 1) to over 155 mph (Category 5). The force of the wind increases exponentially, placing extreme stress on boats and securing lines.
• Heavy Rainfall and Tornadoes –Excessive rain can lead to inland flooding, while tornadoes can cause localized destruction. Nearly 70% of hurricanes coming out of the Gulf of America produce tornadoes upon landfall.
1. Develop a Written Hurricane Plan –
Having a detailed action plan ensures an organized response when a storm approaches.
2. Secure the Boat Properly –
• Use strong lines (minimum ½ inch for boats over 25 feet) with proper chafing gear.
• Protect all areas where lines make contact with rough surfaces.
• Remove loose items such as sails, bimini tops, and electronics to reduce wind resistance.
• Seal openings with duct tape or waterproof covers to prevent water intrusion.
• Charge batteries and ensure bilge pumps are operational.
3. Use a Detailed Checklist –
• BoatUS provides an excellent boat preparation checklist that includes steps for securing vessels. This can be downloaded from their website (boatus.com/seaworthy/hurricane).
• Having a checklist ensures no critical steps are overlooked during the stress of an approaching storm.
4. Choose the Best Location –
• On Land: The safest option if elevation and secure tie-downs are available.
• Hurricane Holes: Well-protected waterways with minimal exposure to wind and waves.
• Anchoring Out: Requires oversized anchors, long rodes, and multiple securing points.
• Marinas and Canals: Coordination with neighboring boaters is essential to prevent a chain reaction of damage.
5. Timing Matters – A hurricane warning issued 24 hours before landfall is often too late to begin preparations. Owners should aim to prepare at least 48 hours in advance.
1. Initial Safety Precautions – Avoid hazardous areas with downed power lines, floodwaters, and submerged debris. Wear protective gear when inspecting damage.
2. Assessing Boat Damage – Take photos and document the condition of the boat for insurance claims. Report any losses to insurers promptly.
3. Developing a Recovery Plan – If your boat has sustained damage, take steps to prevent further deterioration: Contact contractors for necessary repairs.
• Remove remaining valuables and secure the vessel if additional storms threaten the area.
• Work with insurance adjusters to expedite claims processing.
4. Making Every Effort to Get to Your Boat – While assessing damage early is important, do not put yourself in harm’s way. Wait until authorities declare the area safe before attempting to reach your vessel.
Hurricane preparedness for pleasure boaters is an essential responsibility. A well-planned strategy, timely execution, and proper post-storm recovery measures can mean the difference between total loss and manageable repairs. Boaters should work collaboratively with their marina, neighbors, and local boating organizations to ensure all vessels are secured effectively before a storm arrives.

With our seawalls getting older and storms getting stronger, the integrity of a seawall is more important than ever to a home or business on the water. In the most recent storms, more than 1,500 seawalls fell into the water in the Tampa Bay area. Now is the time to inspect your wall for signs that may indicate a need for maintenance or strengthening.
Home or business owner seawall maintenance is minimal, albeit very important. It truly only consists of inspecting your wall and the property near it. You should inspect your seawall twice per year for any cracks in the cap or the vertical panels, as well as any dips or pothole-like spots on your property near the seawall. Pay particular attention to cracks that have a rusty color around them as this is signs of spalling. This could be where moisture has penetrated the wall causing the supporting rebar to rust and expand, thus possibly causing the concrete to split apart. Do you see any water bubbling up in the yard, or fresh soil or sand deposits outside of the seawall? These are subtle signs that your seawall needs maintenance.
In most cases, seawall maintenance is performed by a professional seawall or erosion control company. Often, the wall needs one of two treatments, and sometimes both. The most common repair is a method used to fill voids that develop behind the wall. These voids happen when soil behind the wall is being washed through the seams between the vertical panels or from under the wall. This is why you find little potholes along a seawall. The soil is being washed away during rainy periods or while irrigating the property.
IS YOUR SEAWALL READY FOR THE NEXT STORM?
By Laura Hollaway and Florida Seawall Solutions
A seawall is under the most pressure for failure when we have heavy rain and low tide. The water build-up behind the wall creates a heavy load on the land side. This is increased with a low tide since there isn’t much pressure on the water side to balance the pressure from the land side of the equation. The water on the land side needs to exit the property. If it does not, the pressure can become too great, and the wall may fall over into the water. One solution to this problem is the installation of ’jet filters’. This will allow the water to exit the land side. This is usually done by a professional seawall company and is a nominal cost compared to replacing a seawall.
The most common type of seawall repair or maintenance performed by seawall repair companies requires sealing the seams and cracks in the seawall as well as filling any holes or voids created by erosion. Sealing the seams and cracks helps keep the soil behind the wall from eroding out into the water. Any water behind the wall should escape through the jet filters. The second part of this solution is to fill any voids or holes created by the erosion. Polyurethane is pumped down into these holes and voids. The polyurethane swells and fills these holes and seams. This is an affordable solution and should add years to the life of the wall.
Maintaining your seawall will help protect your property during storms. It may also help to maintain the value of your property. Today, home inspectors look at seawall conditions during their evaluations. If your property needs the seawall to be replaced for lack of maintenance, it could be very costly. Maintenance and repairing are much less expensive. When in doubt, call a seawall company for an inspection. They are usually free of charge.
BY VIRGINIA KIRWAN AND CHRIS FOSTER, PORT 32 MARINAS
As we locals know, hurricanes are a part of life in Florida – I guess to live in the sunshine state we have to take the good with the bad. Therefore, being prepared for a hurricane is essential to combat damage to boats. As a boat owner, it is vital to have a hurricane plan, so when a weather warning is issued, you know exactly what to do and are not left scrambling and with nowhere to go!
A growing trend amongst insurance carriers is requiring a hurricane plan for boat purchases, and many insurance carriers will now reimburse up to 50% of a Hurricane Contract. A Hurricane Haul Out contract is a fantastic way to secure a space for your boat, while giving yourself peace of mind for having a plan in place. Many marinas run out of space when a hurricane warning is issued, so it is necessary to have a plan ahead of time.
All marinas operate differently, but at PORT 32 we store our hurricane vessels inside our Hurricane Category rated buildings and take every storm precaution. We offer hurricane haul out plans at our PORT 32 Marina’s in Naples, Tampa, Tierra Verde, Marco Island, Cape Coral, Ft. Lauderdale and Morehead City, NC. As we do with our boat storage and marina services, our goal is always to make things easier for our customers and take the hassle and scramble out of boating and being hurricane prepared with our contract plans.
Owning a boat or waterfront property is a dream for many, offering endless recreation and breathtaking views. However, when disaster strikes, whether from a hurricane, storm surge, or a boating accident—many owners realize too late that their insurance coverage has critical gaps. As a public adjuster specializing in marine claims, I’ve seen firsthand how policyholders can be caught off guard by exclusions and limitations that leave them with costly out-of-pocket expenses.
Standard homeowners’ insurance, waterfront properties and boats require specialized policies to address risks like water damage, high winds, and liability from marine-related accidents. When reviewing coverage, here are key areas to focus on:
• Hurricane Protection – Many policies don’t cover storm surge or flood damage. For boat owners, hurricane haulout coverage helps cover the cost of relocating vessels before a major storm.
• Dock and Seawall Coverage – Standard homeowners’ policies often exclude docks, piers, and seawalls or provide limited protection. If your property relies on these structures, additional endorsements or separate policies may be necessary.
• Agreed Value vs. Actual Cash Value – Insurers may reimburse boat damage based on actual cash value (depreciated amount) rather than agreed value (pre-determined amount). Verify your policy to avoid unexpected losses.
• Salvage and Wreck Removal – If a boat sinks, some policies only cover damage repair, not removal, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Ensure your policy includes salvage and wreck removal coverage to avoid financial surprises.
• Liability and Pollution Coverage – Boat owners can be held legally responsible for fuel spills or environmental damage after an accident. Having fuel spill liability coverage can prevent expensive fines and cleanup costs.
When purchasing or reviewing your policy, don’t just focus on cost—ask about exclusions, limits, and deductibles. Key questions include:
• Does my policy cover storm surge and flooding? Are my dock and seawall included in my coverage?
• How is my boat valued in a total loss scenario? Do I have salvage and wreck removal protection?
• What liability coverage do I have for environmental damage?
A well-structured insurance policy can mean the difference between a minor setback and a financial disaster. Taking the time to ask the right questions and ensuring you have the right coverage can protect your investment, property, and peace of mind.
We offer free policy reviews to help boat and waterfront property owners understand their coverage and avoid costly surprises. Don’t wait until disaster strikes—review your policy today.

Four Seas is pleased to introduce a new and significantly improved, folding, inflatable RIB. The folding RIB from years ago has been reimagined and leans more heavily towards Black Op’s than Sunday lunch cruise. Named the Fore Runner, we re-engineered the hull and used German Heytex material for added durability and UV resistance. Built in a temperature & dust-controlled facility, all tube seams are welded rather than glued for increased longevity.
In an effort to build a folding adventure craft rather than just a dinghy, we’ve focused not only on higher build quality but also on a large selection of accessories. Stock oar locks have been replaced with Railblaza mounts for use with rod holders, fillet tables, spear gun racks & drink holders to name a few. It only takes 4 minutes to deflate & fold away when the adventure ends. To that end, we’ve also bettered the travel & accessory bags that come with each Fore Runner.
Our initial offering is the two most popular sizes. The 290 (9’6”) is retailing for $4,050 and the 340 (11’3”) is $4,750. All Fore Runners come with the travel bag, accessory bag, oars, bench seats, pump and repair kit. Production begins arriving in early May. When a hurricane approaches, one of the most common mistakes boat owners make is leaving their vessel on a lift— often resulting in catastrophic losses of both the boat and its supporting structure. Whether mechanical or floating, the best practice is to remove the vessel from the lift and trailer it out of the storm’s path. However, the floating dock or boat lift itself can safely endure the storm if properly secured, countering the negative stigma surrounding their resilience.
Unlike commercial floating docks that use large floats to support a deck structure above the waterline, mass-produced recreational floating docks sit directly at water level. This design plays a crucial role in their ability to withstand hurricanes. When properly maintained—meaning no missing floats, large gaps, or protruding structures—the dock can naturally ride out the storm.
Aerodynamics also work in favor of these low-profile docks. Like the downforce in race cars, when wind strikes the side of the dock, it flows over the structure, creating downward air pressure that helps keep the dock stable on the water.
How a floating dock or lift is secured plays a significant role in its ability to withstand hurricane conditions. Depending on its attachment point—whether to a seawall, existing pier, commercial floating dock, or mooring poles—different precautions should be taken:
· Attached to a Seawall or Pier: If the connection point allows for vertical movement—enabling the dock to rise with storm surge while remaining laterally secure—the structure should be in good shape. As a precaution, tie additional lines from dock cleats or tabs to a firm structure in case the primary connection points fail. Redundant securing measures are always recommended.
· Attached to a Commercial Floating Dock: The stability of a recreational floating dock in this scenario depends on how well the commercial dock itself is secured. If removal is not an option, adding supplemental lines to secure anchor points is good practice.
· Floating Freely on Mooring Poles: If the dock is fixed to mooring poles driven into the seabed, lakebed, or canal substrate and cannot be removed, securing it with additional lines is essential. At Gulf Stream Docks, we have developed a two-stage system for our Post Float and Mooring Pole combinations. Our High and Dry Mooring Pole Extender is designed to handle storm surges by allowing an internal pipe within the mooring pole to rise with the dock as water levels surge. This innovative design ensures that the dock remains in place, even during extreme weather conditions.
Our High and Dry Mooring Pole Extender has been field-tested during Hurricanes Helen and Milton, proving its effectiveness in keeping docks secure. The key takeaway for dock and lift owners is preparation—ensuring the structure is in good condition, eliminating vulnerabilities, and implementing backup securing measures.
If the vessel cannot be removed from the lift, ensure it is wellsecured to the floating dock with tie-downs. One feature that sets Gulf Stream Docks apart from competitors is our Super Strong Injection-Molded Solid Nylon Connecting Pins. Each pin includes a hexagonal recess at the bottom, allowing for the insertion of a 1/2” nut. This makes every pin on the dock a potential tie-down point using a stainless-steel eyebolt and fender washer.
By understanding the dynamics of floating structures, using secure connection points, and implementing innovative mooring solutions like the High and Dry Mooring Pole Extender, owners can significantly reduce the risk of damage during severe storms.

Docking can be stressful, especially when the wind picks up or the current isn’t cooperating. The last thing you want is to be fumbling around for the right tool. That’s where the Shurhold Boat Hook shines. Paired with any Shurhold Handle, this multiuse tool is designed to be on hand, ready to go, and built to do more than just grab a cleat.
The Shurhold Boat Hook connects securely to any Shurhold Handle, giving you instant reach when approaching the dock. With a press of a locking tab, your handle extends or collapses— making it just the right length when seconds matter. Once it’s set, it stays locked. No slipping, no surprises. Whether you're pulling in a line, pushing off a piling, or snagging a dock cleat, this hook gives you confidence and control.
Why carry multiple tools when one can do it all? The Shurhold Boat Hook is more than just a hook—it’s a docking multitool. First, it allows you to push off safely from docks and pilings without damaging your boat or straining yourself. This is especially helpful when maneuvering in tight slips or when wind and current make close contact risky.
Second, it helps you pull in lines, fenders, or other gear that might be just out of reach. Instead of leaning dangerously over the rail, you can bring everything to you with ease and control.
Third, it’s designed to grab what you need with precision, whether that’s a dock line, a mooring ring, or a floating item in the water. Its strong yet non-marring design ensures you’re not only effective but also protecting your boat’s finish while doing it.
Here’s the real magic: once you're tied up at the dock, the same Shurhold Handle that helped you secure your boat can transform into your cleaning tool. Just pop off the hook and attach a Shurhold brush, mop, or squeegee head. In seconds, you’re rinsing down your deck or scrubbing your hull—no extra poles cluttering up your storage locker.
The Shurhold Boat Hook system saves space, reduces hassle, and adapts to whatever the day throws at you. It's gear that works as hard as you do, whether you're docking, pushing off, or washing down. Because the best tools are the ones that are ready when you are.

LiftBar is the first boat lift to incorporate a screw jackbased lifting mechanism that is all housed in one tube, to deliver high speed, a hidden structure, no sway, increased reliability and enhanced submergibility. The lack of cable winders eliminates the need for cable-keepers and prevents tangling. LiftBar can be trickle charged with 110 volts or solar power and no underwater AC power creates a safer waterfront experience and does not require an electrician for installation. Because of its contained design, the lift is submersible which enables it to be installed out of sight at dock level and provides peace-of-mind in extreme environments. Having key components under an air bell cover protects it from flooding and backup power from the battery enables operation even if the dock power is off. The powerful 12HP system provides speeds multiple times faster than traditional 220V motor lifts with gearboxes and the inline motor with planetary gears offers a much quieter lifting and lowering experience.
