Marex 360 Cabriolet Cruiser: King of the sea

The Marex 360 Cabriolet Cruiser is well suited to coastal and inland cruising and features a wide range of comfort, amenities and innovative ideas. The ability to adapt to the environment flexibly makes the Marex 360 Cabriolet Cruiser a King of the Sea.

The Perfect Party Cruiser

The dynamic exterior of the Marex 360 СС was fashioned by the best designers and constructors - nature itself. Often harsh, rapidly changing Scandinavian weather and short-term warm days dictated the hull’s design. The boat features one of the largest convertible cockpits in its class that can become a perfect place for sunbathing, sharing a meal, or throwing a party at sundown.

Swim Platform

As several marinas and lakes restrict boat size, the 360 CC can be delivered with either a long or a short swim platform. The 27.5 and 47.2-inch platforms allow one to choose the boat's length of 36 or 37.7 feet.

Thanks to a hidden Davit’s solution, the lift tender onto the platform is an easy task. Moving the ladder to the portside allows to have permanent access to it. Benches on the platform serve as a place for relaxation and provide plenty of storage compartments, including space for eight fenders.

Cockpit

The luxurious cockpit is spacious and comfortable, with space for up to 10 people to enjoy. The U-shaped sofa/ table combination can be converted into two extra berths for sleeping, or it can be used as a solarium during the day. Modern storage innovations encompass expanded waterproof containers under the seats.

The 360 CC’s U-shaped galley with its flip-up worktop is perfectly equipped for gourmet cooking. Keen chefs can utilise a rich standard of kitchen equipment, including a 52.8-gallon fridge, large freezer, double sink, triple-burner gas hub and an ENO oven.

A handy door in the windscreen affords quick, safe and direct access to the foredeck. Together with the wide side passages, the captain and guests can move quickly around the boat.

A true convertible, the 360 CC features an innovative canopy and roof, which, in a matter of seconds, forms a protective ‘tent’ over the cockpit. Sensational in every aspect - the new canopy system has not compromised the boat's sleek, contemporary style. Thanks to a specially designed curtain mechanism (the curtains can be quickly deployed from side storage concealed in the superstructure), converting the boat to a cabriolet is quick and easy. This system has already proven to be the fastest in the world; you pull the canopy out and wrap it around the cockpit seating area, and the whole place is protected from unpredictable weather.

Lower Deck

The use of natural materials in the interior of the boat, such as teak wood, adds warmth and a homey feeling to the interior of the 360 CC – you can especially feel it on the lower, deck where you can find generous accommodation. In addition, there is a spacious bathroom in which it has a separate shower cabin with a bench.

The master forward cabin features a double bed, plenty of storage space and a high ceiling of 6.3 feet. The midship cabin features a double bed, full-height wardrobe and comfy sofa in the entrance zone. Both cabins are bathed in natural light courtesy of the large deck windows.

Tech and propulsion

Skipper-friendly ergonomics are part of Marex DNA. All the instrumentation, two 12’ chartplotters, switchgear and antireflective finishes guarantee safe cruising while the spacious triple co-pilot seat assures an exciting experience for the whole family.

Marex offers several motorisation options: a single Volvo Penta D6 with 440 HP, capable of accelerating the boat to 31 knots, and a paired Volvo Penta D4 of 300 HP, which increases the maximum speed to 40 knots. Alternatives are two Mercury Diesels, or Yanmars, with outputs of 260 or 320 HP.

About Marex

Marex Boats was founded in 1973 in the south of Norway. It is a family shipyard with a mission to create high-quality family cabin cruisers with fantastic comfort and safety. Marex Boats has a 301389.5 square foot production facility in Kaunas, Lithuania, employing more than 400 professionals. The present range consists of six cruisers from 31 to 46 feet in length.

Traditional RIBs have historically been known for their use in military and first responder organizations for their stability and seaworthiness, which of late are adding soft sided vessels to their fleets for the same benefit. Design Innovation

The Rebel 50 G showcases a sleek and

robust design with integrated windows that seamlessly blend the exterior with the interior. This innovative approach not only boosts visual allure but also enhances aerodynamic performance and element comfort for more extended cruising.

The stabilizing characteristics of the foam filled, soft sides of the Rebel create a natural and immediate counter stabilizing reaction well displayed in rough seas or normal rolling when not underway.

Sumptuous Interiors

The interiors of the Rebel 50 G are comparable to a luxury home, with options ranging from lavish dual cabins to a spacious single suite. Premium materials like Ceppo di Gre’ marble elevate the ambiance, providing a luxurious and welcoming space.

Performance Excellence

AQUILA: POWER CATAMARAN HERITAGE

ANCIENT ENGINEERING

The recorded history of catamarans goes back to the Austronesian peoples who migrated from Taiwan to the islands of the India and Pacific Oceans circa 3000 to 1500 BCE. Their expansion continued for centuries, stretching from Easter Island to the east, Madagascar to the west, and New Zealand to the south. They may have even reached the west coast of the Americas.

Fast forward a few thousand years, and power catamarans have become the fastest-growing segment of the yachting industry, offering diverse sizes and styles for both monohull boaters and catamaran enthusiasts.

Power cats have several distinct advantages over mono-hull boats:

STABILITY & COMFORT

The dual-hull design of catamarans minimizes rolling and pitching motions, resulting in a smoother, safer ride, especially in rough seas. Air pressure between the hulls provide lift and cushioning so catamarans tend to ride over the water more than knife through it. The wide footprint also provides greater stability.

SPACE

Boats are often categorized by length which can be misleading. Monohull boats taper to a point, which means space on and below deck gets narrower towards the bow. On a catamaran, this space constriction does not happen. The wide beam allows for multiple cabins, spacious lounging areas, and ample storage. To achieve a similar amount of interior space, a monohull typically needs to be about 20% longer to achieve similar ‘size’ in terms of livable space.

MANEUVERABILITY

Twin hull configuration and shallow draft makes catamarans easier to handle in tight situations, such as docking or navigating channels and inlets. The engines are placed further apart from each other, allowing for easier maneuverability than monohulls. And the shallow draft helps catamarans reach idyllic shallowwater locations monohulls cannot, allowing you to anchor closer to shore.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Catamarans experience less water resistance and improved hydrodynamics, reducing fuel consumption. The twin hulls allow the boat to glide more easily through the water. Displacement

(how much of the boat is submerged) also plays a role. A catamaran with a shallow draft and a more optimized hull design will generally be more fuel-efficient than one with a deeper draft.

Powered by twin 600 hp or quad 400 hp Mercury Verado outboards, the Aquila 47 Molokai delivers thrilling performance and a smooth ride, thanks to her twin-step hull design and strong, lightweight vacuum-infused construction. Joystick piloting makes close-quarters maneuvering a breeze, while a 1,048-gallon (3,967 Liter) fuel capacity brings any horizon within reach.

Underway, seven protected helm seats in two air-conditioned rows keep your crew safe and comfortable, while state-of-the-art Raymarine electronics, C-Zone digital switching and a custom-tuned Fusion audio system put information and entertainment at your fingertips.

BRINGING TOGETHER THE BEST ON THE WATER

ANCHORING: DON'T BE THAT GUY

I once met a guy who used an old paint can filled with concrete as an anchor. I also met a captain of a multi-million-dollar charter yacht try to anchor in a windy, sandy harbor using a boulder hook and couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t stay put. Whether you are catching a quick nap or leaving your boat for the season, anchoring is a vital part of boating, one could even call it a form of art. One of the boats I worked on as a charter captain had a draft of a few inches with the engines up and a good anchor with a set length of line tied to the bow. I would drop the anchor and back down to set it, then would give it some reverse throttle and let all the rope out, shut down the engines, tilt them up and drift back so I could step off the stern in ankle-deep water with another anchor to drop on the beach. My guests were the only ones that didn’t have to swim out to the boat and appreciated the service and the calm, cool and collected appearance of their captain. They were far from waves that would rock the boat and knock them over, far from other boats that may not have been anchored with the same skill and attention, and at the end of the day, the boat was where we left it. While there are many ways to do it, the end result of anchoring is ultimately the same – to stay in one place.

As I reflected on the topic of anchoring a million questions and topics came to mind…what type of anchor to use, how to assess the bottom surface and contours, the effects of wind and waves on anchorages and scope. All topics that should be understood to be an anchoring guru. However, there are plenty of resources for exploring these in more detail. The topic that doesn’t get a lot of attention, however, is etiquette. How do you anchor to make sure that you do it safely and let others share the space with you, while leaving the anchorage in pristine condition for others to enjoy in the future?

The most embarrassing thing when anchoring for a day on the beach or sandbar — which can cause damage to your boat and the ecosystem, as well as put a damper on your day — is your boat ending up on shore. Wind and waves can pull up even a well-set anchor and seagrass can make an anchor that feels set slip. Before dropping the hook, take a look at where other boats are anchored, where waves are breaking and take into account any changing conditions such as currents or tides. If you find yourself peacefully anchored in a foot of water in calm seas and high tide, once the tide goes out your trip to the beach might be extended by a few hours as you wait for your boat to float again. Look for a calm place to anchor without breaking waves, this will be better on your boat and your crew. The number of times I’ve seen a guy with a drink in his hand trying to push a boat off the sand with his free hand or quizzically staring at the boat floating away with the anchor hanging helplessly in deeper water cannot be counted. Don’t be that guy.

While anchoring, particularly in a crowded cove, creative maneuvering can be a part of the process. Spinning props and soft tissue do not like each other and engine safety is one of the most important things in and around boats. Be aware of people in the water and control your crew to make sure that the coast is clear before they jump off into the water. If backing into shallow water, give yourself a slight running start and to be safe, shut off the engines and tilt them up to get them out of the way. Also remember that fiberglass is a hard surface, so protect boats near each other with fenders. Always keep fingers and toes out from between boats, particularly when an unexpected wake can throw them together without warning. Have you ever felt like your anchor was dragging only to pull on your anchor line and find that the line was wrapped around the anchor? Imagine ten boats in a crowded anchorage all with swinging lines. One wayward line can foul your own anchor or worse, your neighbor’s. Line etiquette means knowing where all the lines in the harbor are and not anchoring on top of others. Coordinating with neighbors is part and parcel of sharing the water with other boaters and deciding the easiest and best way for everyone to share the space can be as simple as a friendly conversation. Work together to work smarter not harder.

A final consideration in anchoring is that your time at this place is temporary, respect the environment so that it is not only fun for you today, but a perfect anchorage for years to come. Sea grass and mangroves can not only be difficult to anchor in, but these features also harbor sea life like turtles and baby fish, and mitigate beach erosion protecting sand from storms. As with any outdoor activity, when enjoying a good anchorage take your trash with you. As the old saying goes, “take only pictures and leave only footprints.”

Report From a US Sailing Accredited Community Sailing Program

US SAILING recently announced their new tiered pathway to the US SAILING team with the Olympic development programs. We welcome the pathway to the podium, but let’s not forget the impact community sailing programs have on introducing learn-to-sail programs within their communities, such as Team Paradise Sailing located in Miami, Florida.

The resources I’m looking at are impressive! Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) is the largest district in Florida and the 4th largest in the U.S. It serves over 330,000 students across more than 350 schools including traditional public schools, magnet programs, and charter schools. It’s extremely diverse, reflecting Miami-Dade’s multicultural population.

Throughout the years, we’ve welcomed youth from the foster care system, from transitional housing communities, from charter elementary schools and local community not-for-profit organizations; however, in September of 2024 Team Paradise embarked on the inaugural season of the Team Paradise ‘SYSTEM’ program. ‘SYSTEM’ is an acronym for Sailing+Youth+STEM. We are utilizing US Sailing’s Reach STEM Education Series with sailing as a medium to provide hands-on learning opportunities that inspire interest in fields of study like physics, marine biology, robotics, technology and more.

If the mission of your youth sailing program is similar to ours, consider taking the following steps: Research the schools in your area and connect with them to gauge interest in collaboration. Concentrate on charter schools and schools with magnet programs.

• Identify schools with STEM-based curriculum focusing on campuses closest to your venue.

• Utilize US Sailing’s Reach STEM Education Series as your lesson plan.

• If you don’t already have a classroom STEM teacher in mind, ask the school for recommendations. Having a great teacher in the classroom is just as important as having a skilled coach on the water!

To sustain the success of our youth sailing program, we focus on schools or groups within proximity to our sailing center and are partnering with groups most likely to enjoy being in and on the water and have a desire to learn to sail. As of this writing, we are half-way through the winter session of the ‘SYSTEM” sailing program. 94% of the kids returned from the fall session and we expect them to continue through the spring program. Not only are they learning basic sailing, but they are also applying the Reach STEM modules in the natural learning environment of Biscayne Bay.

It is our hope that this unique introduction to the sport will inspire young athletes to continue their sailing careers. It may not be the traditional pathway, but who knows? The next Olympic gold medalist could be right around the proverbial corner.

Team Paradise Sailing is a 501(c)(3) not for profit. For more information about us and how to donate, please visit www.teamparadise.org

BOAT CLUBS

WHICH TYPE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Joining a boat club offers a world of opportunities for water enthusiasts, providing access to boating without the expense and responsibilities of owning a vessel. Whether you're a seasoned mariner or new to the boating lifestyle, membership in a boat club can provide quite a few advantages.

When boat clubs first came on the scene in the late 80s they provided the ability to rent from a fleet of different types of boats for a monthly fee from a set location. Worked out great for boaters who were new to boating and wanted to “try before they buy” or those who were occasional users and wanted access to boats without everything else that goes with ownership. Over the years clubs added more locations across the country and then networks formed with reciprocity and ease of boat access in new markets and the club experience started to take off. This also spawned clubs who own the marinas they operate out of, marinas and yacht clubs started their own clubs with their own fleets and services, fractional ownership took another step in the club world with fewer members per vessel, set times of usage between the ownership group, and you even find a few dealerships in SW Florida with boat clubs/rentals. There are even clubs that not only rent marine vessels (boats, jet skis, kayaks) but you also have access to land based toys like ATVs, snowmobiles, RVs and more. Lots of options to consider now.

So, you’ve been thinking about a boat club experience for yourself, what are some of the advantages:

1. Access to a Fleet of Boats

Boat clubs provide access to a variety of boats, whether that be a deck boat for a day at the sandbar experience, center console to enjoy some fishing or a cabin cruiser, sailboat or wakeboat there are clubs that will fit your lifestyle. This flexibility allows you to explore a range of boating experiences and most let you bring the family dog along as well.

2. Cost-Effective Boating

Owning a boat can be expensive, with costs including purchase price, insurance, docking fees, maintenance, and storage. Boat club memberships typically offer an all-inclusive fee, covering maintenance, insurance, and other expenses. This makes it a more budget-friendly option for enjoying the boating lifestyle. This is also an excellent opportunity for boat owners who enjoy the ownership experience but travel/vacation frequently but don’t want to or can’t trailer their owned boat with them but want the ability to have access to a boat near their frequented destinations.

3. Hassle-Free Experience

Boat ownership comes with significant responsibilities, such as cleaning, maintenance, and repairs. In a boat club, these tasks are handled by the club staff. You simply book your boat, show up, and enjoy your day on the water. Afterward, the club takes care of cleaning and storage, while you get to spend more time with family and guests.

4. Boating Education and Safety

This is one of the most important aspects of getting out on the water. Doesn’t matter if you are renting or own your own vessel, the safety of you and your passengers should always be the first thing of importance. Many boat clubs offer training programs for members, covering boating basics, navigation, and safety procedures. This is especially valuable for beginners who want to build their confidence and skills. Even experienced boaters can benefit from advanced courses and many club instructors will also provide “local knowledge” trips to help you learn the local waterways, if you’re nice they might even share a fishing spot or secluded beach.

Still not finding something that fits you? In addition to the options above, many Marinas, Yacht Clubs and even some Dealers offer independent boat club memberships as well. To find these:

Check with your local marinas, dealers and yacht clubs.

• Search online for “boat clubs near [your location].”

• Visit regional boating forums or community boards and check your local dealer’s sites.

Each of these club options offers unique perks, such as training, insurance, and flexible membership plans, catering to boating enthusiasts across Florida. For more details on fees, services, and boat availability, it’s best to contact the clubs directly or visit their websites. If you’re thinking about purchasing a new category of boat, want an option for a different boat type than what you own, an option for boat access during vacations or travel or just simply want to experience boating without owning than a boat club may be just the right option for you. Whatever you decide, get out on the water and enjoy!

SARASOTA: A VIBRANT GETAWAY

Nestled along Florida’s Gulf Coast shores, Sarasota County offers an unparalleled mix of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and diverse activities both on and off the water. While boaters will find a network of waterways, marinas, and coastal charm that caters to every nautical preference, Sarasota is more than just a boater’s paradise – it’s where Florida’s scenic beauty, storied culture, and world-class amenities come together to create unforgettable experiences.

The opportunities for exploration are endless from the open Gulf of Mexico to the serene waters of Sarasota Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Boaters can navigate through mangrove tunnels, drop anchor at pristine beaches, or enjoy a scenic cruise along the ICW, dotted with marinas and waterfront dining spots. Noteworthy options include Marina Jack, situated in downtown Sarasota, which provides transient dockage, fuel services, and waterfront dining with breathtaking views of Sarasota Bay. Another Option is the Crow’s Nest Marina on the Island of Venice, offering fuel, supplies, dockage, and waterfront dining. Boaters exploring South Sarasota County’s waterways can boat in the scenic Myakka River in North Port, cruise through the tranquil waters of Lemon Bay in Englewood, or launch from Manasota Key for direct access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Explore Sarasota’s diverse coastal neighborhoods, each offering its own unique charm. Siesta Key, renowned for its powdery white sand beaches, invites boaters to anchor at Crescent or Turtle Beach and enjoy the vibrant shopping and dining scene in Siesta Key Village. Boaters can access Ophelia’s on the Bay by boat, providing an opportunity for a meal with beautiful views of little Sarasota Bay. Nearby Lido Key pairs natural beauty with fan-favorite attractions like Sarasota Jungle Gardens and Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium or St. Armands Circle’s shops and fine dining, including the iconic Columbia Restaurant. For tranquility, Longboat Key’s pristine beaches and accommodations like Longboat Key Club Moorings or the newly opened St. Regis Longboat Key Resort provide a luxurious escape. Further south, Venice – the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” – offers historic downtown charm, fossil hunting, and waterfront dining at Dockside Waterfront Grill. Those seeking seclusion will delight in Casey Key’s undeveloped shores perfect for snorkeling, picnicking, and spotting marine wildlife.

One of the most beloved pastimes for local boaters is sandbar hopping. Popular spots like Midnight Pass Sandbar and Jewfish Key host shallow, sandy areas that are perfect for swimming, socializing, or simply soaking up the Florida sun. Sarasota is a premier destination for anglers, offering world-class fishing opportunities both inshore and offshore. Cast your line in the Gulf of Mexico for grouper, snapper, and kingfish, or explore the shallows of Sarasota Bay for redfish, snook, and trout. Popular fishing spots include New Pass, Big Pass, and Venice Jetty.

Sarasota’s reputation as Florida’s Cultural Coast adds depth to any visit. While boaters may initially come for the waterways, they’ll stay for the culture. The Ringling showcases an impressive collection of artistic and architectural marvels alongside its lush, historic grounds, while Marie Selby Botanical Gardens invites visitors to explore a world of exotic plants, rotating exhibitions, and stunning bayfront views. Performance venues like the Sarasota Opera House, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Florida Studio Theatre, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Venice Institute for Performing Arts, and productions by the Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Opera, and North Port Symphony offer world-class entertainment that rounds out a day of seaside adventures. Spring presents sports enthusiasts a chance to catch a Major League Baseball training game with the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.

Sarasota County offers something for everyone, from avid boaters to those seeking cultural enrichment and fine dining. Whether arriving by sea or by land, Sarasota County’s Gulf Coast charm promises an experience that’s as multifaceted as it is memorable.

JOINING THE RANKS OF BOAT OWNERS

So, you’ve decided to buy a boat. One of the happiest days in a boater’s life is the day that the ink is dry, hands are shaken and as Captain Ron famously said, you get to “kick the tires and light the fires”. That said, there are so many milestones that lead to that moment, which are rarely talked about, but that make the entire process so worth it. That first cruise as a boat owner often gives you the time to reflect and marvel at how far you’ve come from that first, life-changing declaration of “I’m going to buy a boat!”

A lifetime ago, I was living a sort of vagabond existence in the Virgin Islands and a friend of mine called and said that they knew someone that was selling a sailboat and it was a “great deal on a vintage sailboat with a lot of character”. He wasn’t wrong. He took us on a tour of a boat that had a six-foot hole in the side, clothes and supplies littered throughout the cabin from a life forgotten and a lot of work ahead. But he was right, it was a good deal and it DID have a lot of character. Unlike the path most people take to buy a boat, the deal concluded in a St. Thomas parking lot with a bill of sale and an envelope of cash exchanged. All of a sudden, I was a boat owner. After several years of solid work, four months living in a boat yard, an electrical fire and steering failures while under sail, I got that peaceful, reflective cruise and thought about how far I’d come. This is my chance to tell you how to avoid some of the pitfalls in boat buying so you do not to do the things that I did.

Whether you are looking for a small inflatable for a cruise around the mangroves, a wake boat for weekend adventures on the bay, a cruiser, liveaboard or pontoon, boats are as individual as their owners. There is something about the boating lifestyle that has spoken to you and once that feeling has gotten under your skin, there’s no turning back. Based on your on-the-water interests, finances, size of your family or collection of friends and location, you might already have an idea of what kind of boat you’re looking for. Regardless of if you do or not, the best place to start is your local dealer. They are often boaters themselves, know the area, know what kinds of boats to look for and are intimately aware of the boat buying process. A dealer is going to be a fantastic resource, both for information and for making the whole process a lot easier. Remember, unlike a car dealer or a realtor, a boat dealer typically wants to be your lifetime partner in helping you get the most out of your time on the water. They will not only help you purchase your boat, but also usually are able to service your boat, get you the supplies you need, store your boat for hurricane season and when the time comes, sell your boat and help you find your next one.

Just as you wouldn’t want to drag race in a minivan or take a Smart Car off roading, there is a type of boat for you. You know what fits your lifestyle and probably have a good idea of a brand, model or length that you are looking for. You might even know what options you are looking for or trim levels that are right for you. If you are a pontoon boater looking for a cruiser for the ICW you might be deciding between a Bennington or Godfrey as they both, for example, offer fishing or family cruising packages, several lengths and either single- or twin-engine versions. Most boat brands have a “Find a Dealer” page on their website that will help you narrow down your search.

The next question is whether you are looking to buy new or used. Buying new will be more expensive, but you’ll be able to skip the potential wear of a used boat, as well as any hidden maintenance issues and it’ll be easier to get financing and insurance. Plus, by buying new, you have more control over options such as colors, fabrics and accessories. Buying used, whether from a dealer, from an online listing or directly from the owner can be significantly cheaper, but opens up a number of potential pitfalls to navigate, especially in saltwater environments. As we all know, saltwater adds a new level of wear and tear. There’s corrosion to check for, especially on metal parts such as engines, underwater fittings and equipment. You have to ensure that the engines are in good working order and have been flushed and maintained properly. In addition, there is the possibility of any flooding or impact damage from storms. While there are certain tell-tale signs of water or impact damage, it is best to leave an assessment of the shape of a vessel up to an expert and that is where a marine surveyor comes in. Finding the right surveyor is a topic that can be an article in and of itself, but look for credentials such as professional certifications and association memberships. Many dealers will include a survey as part of their listings, while some will leave the expense and time up to a potential buyer. If you are buying straight from the owner of the boat, you’re on your own, but I would never buy a boat without one. Most haul out facilities have a survey option, which is usually a half-day haul scheduled with the surveyor. It’s an added expense, but worth it.

Once you decide on the type of boat and pick out the boat you want to buy, then it all comes down to financing and insurance. Boat dealers, like car dealers can usually take care of this part of the process for you, however if you are looking to buy direct, there are a number of institutions that specialize in the recreational

marine space. As with buying a car, expect to have a credit check, a down payment and set terms for the loan. Boats are expensive so when setting your budget, don’t forget to build in a cushion. Fuel costs, storage, upgrades, maintenance and gear such as safety and fishing equipment all add up. There are also ways to reduce some of these costs, for example, if you put a vessel tracking or security device on your boat like the ones from GOST or Boat Fix, you can see insurance discounts of several percentage points, which can offset the cost of the hardware and adds a layer of peace of mind to your ownership experience.

The last thing to think about when buying a boat is what boaters usually consider the fun part – gear. Of course, there are all the fun gadgets that go with boating, coolers, fishing equipment, the obligatory captain’s hat…but don’t forget the necessary items. The U.S. Coast Guard has a list of required safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, flares and PFDs. Depending on where you cruise, EPIRBs and life rafts might not be required, but a really good idea. If you are buying a used boat, safety gear may be included, but just as you had the vessel inspected by a surveyor, life rafts should be serviced and repacked and all expiration dates must be checked. Just because a flare is expired, by the way, it may still work and is worthwhile to keep in your ditch bag, though it should be replaced with up-to-date equipment.

Buying a boat is a big decision and there is a lot to consider. Owning a boat is not always sundowners and sunsets in secluded harbors. But as most boat owners will tell you, that one moment when the whole buying process is behind you and you are at the wheel and able to reflect, it is all worth it. Dive right in. Once again, to quote the great Captain Ron, “If anything’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen out there.”

A great place to look for a boat is a boat show like the Newport International Boat Show. Not only do manufacturers display their latest models, but many offer boat show specials or discounts. As an added bonus, many financing companies and insurance providers will have booths at the show and will be able to take care of the paperwork.

HOW TO SUBMIT A US COAST GUARD APPLICATION AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CAPTAIN

Welcome to the third installment in our series on obtaining a US Coast Guard Captain’s License.

In Article 1, we explored the many reasons mariners choose to become licensed captains and the numerous benefits that come with holding a license, even if it’s not used for commercial operations.

Article 2 focused on the often-daunting application process, detailing how to effectively complete and submit the forms, the most challenging part of the licensing journey.

This final article addresses the process of submitting your application to the National Maritime Center (NMC), the body responsible for issuing your original and renewal licenses. We strongly recommend utilizing a Maritime Credentialing Agent (MCA) to review your application before submission to ensure all information is accurate and complete.

If any details are incorrect, the NMC will send you a letter requesting clarification and give you 60 days to respond. Missing the deadline will require you to restart the application process. However, when working with an MCA, the NMC will notify both you and the agent of any issues simultaneously, allowing the MCA to address corrections promptly, often before you’re even aware of the problem.

While it’s important to note that many mistakes come from the NMC itself rather than the applicant, the assistance of an MCA can prevent delays and ensure a smoother experience.

Submitting Your Application

Once you've completed your 10-page physical form and all necessary requirements, the final step is to submit your application. You can scan all documents into a single PDF and email it to NMCapplications@uscg.mil. Your application will be routed to several departments, and after processing, you will first receive your medical card, which should be stored in a plastic sleeve inside your Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).

While the process may seem overwhelming—especially with requirements such as the physical exam, drug testing, TWIC card, and First Aid/CPR certifications—an MCA can streamline these tasks and remove any concerns. Expect a processing time of 8-10 weeks for your original license to be issued. It will be sent to the address listed on your application, so ensure that it reflects where you’ll be receiving mail at the time. If you have multiple residences, consider where you’ll be during the final stages of the process.

Many applicants grow anxious about the processing time or wonder how to check the status of their license. The US Coast Guard’s website offers a simple way to track your application’s progress. Visit www.uscg.mil/nmc and click on the blue box labeled “Check Your Application Status” to follow the prompts and access your information.

Alternatively, you can call the NMC’s toll-free number at (888) 427-5662 or use the online chat feature on their website. With an MCA, these tasks will be handled on your behalf.

Congratulations! Now What?

Once you’ve received your license, you’re ready to put your knowledge into practice or embark on a maritime career as a licensed captain. But what are your responsibilities as a captain?

A Bold Statement: Obtaining a captain's license doesn’t necessarily mean you're an expert at driving a boat. It’s the captain's responsibility to be thoroughly familiar with the specific vessel they’re operating. Given the wide variety of boat types and brands, no training can fully prepare you for every possible vessel you may encounter on the water. Whether you're handling an inboard engine, an auxiliary sailboat, or a tiller-controlled vessel, each requires unique handling techniques.

The good news is that there are licensed captains who offer one-on-one training to improve your skills on your specific vessel.

I’ve seen countless boating mishaps, such as docking too quickly or forgetting to deploy fenders. While these mistakes can be embarrassing, they often highlight the gap between obtaining a license and gaining practical experience on the water.

What Does the Captain’s Course Cover?

At its core, the captain’s course emphasizes safety. As the captain, you are responsible for the safety of your vessel, passengers, and crew. This includes:

Knowledge of local waters and unfamiliar areas

Having proper safety equipment on board for emergency situations

Adequate communication devices to request assistance if necessary

Ability to manage medical emergencies onboard

• Handling your vessel in adverse weather conditions

The list of responsibilities goes on, but the key theme is safety.

A Common Misconception: "I Have Too Much Responsibility"

Many aspiring captains hesitate to get their license due to the perceived responsibility it brings. However, remember that your duties are only applicable when you're operating as a licensed captain—meaning when you are being compensated for your services. If you're simply boating with friends and not in charge of the vessel, your responsibilities are the same as anyone else on board. While you may have more experience or knowledge, the legal responsibility is not yours unless you're actively serving as the captain.

To illustrate this point, consider a licensed airline pilot who’s flying as a passenger on a commercial flight. If an incident occurs, the pilot has no more responsibility than any other passenger. This analogy highlights that your level of responsibility as a captain is tied to the capacity in which you are operating a vessel.

Final Thoughts

A special thanks to Scuttlebutt for allowing me to share this information. I hope these articles have helped potential captains better understand the path to obtaining a license and highlighted the local support available. Since the first captain’s school opened in the US Virgin Islands in 1992, we’ve proudly graduated over 11,600 students, with the motto, “Helping Mariners Through the Maze.”

Best regards,

The Captains School

MAPTECH® UNVEILS HARBOR DRONE VIDEO PROGRAM

Marine Navigation Product Leader Increases Boater Confidence While Allowing Marinas To Better Service Customers With New Tools

New Bedford, Mass. - Maptech®, an industry-leading provider of marine navigation chartbooks, digital navigation charts and many other marine navigation tools, announced today it has further expanded its offerings by unveiling its Harbor Drone Video Program. The new videos display coastal details that are not available from satellite or highaltitude aerial imagery for an easier and more approachable understanding of new harbors and facilities. Maptech currently has over 100 videos and are adding more all the time.

Satellite images and charts often fail to provide details that can be seen from the helm. The Maptech videos help the boater “see what they will see” when visiting a harbor or marina such as buoys and landmarks and important locations like fuel docks. The videos are easily accessible through QR codes in the Maptech Embassy Cruising Guides and online through MoreMaptech.com – a free site that provides comprehensive marine facility information to complement the videos.

Both marinas and boaters can benefit from the harbor drone videos. Marinas can showcase their facility and

harbor and provide a convenient way to explain to boaters how to approach the marina and fuel dock by following the aerial view of the property. For boaters, it is an effective way to visualize landmarks when visiting a new marina and harbor and view the approach and channels leading into the harbor. The expansion of Maptech’s Harbor Drone Video Program will bring even more easy-to-use videos to harbors along the East Coast.

“Maptech’s harbor drone videos are the answer to what both boaters and marinas have been asking for,” said Lee Estes, Owner and President, Maptech. “We’re proud to offer our customers this new technological resource through our mission to help boaters feel more confident, explore new places and operate more safely. This is truly a win-win for boaters and marinas.”

Maptech’s product line ranging from digital navigation to paper charts to 500+ page cruising guides and now the harbor drone video allows boaters to feel safe they are in good hands with Maptech. For more information on Maptech and its navigational tools, visit www.maptech.com

EVER WONDER WHY SOME PEOPLE GET MORE DONE?

Some people make boat maintenance look effortless—gleaming decks, tools on hand, and fast results. Their secret? The right system.

The System is the Solution

The Shurhold One Bucket System is designed to help you clean smarter, not harder. Unlike standard wash buckets, this all-in-one system streamlines washing and storage. It’s designed for maximum convenience, including everything needed for an efficient, thorough clean. Here’s what sets it apart:

The 5-Gallon Rope Handle Bucket

The heart of the system is a durable 5-gallon bucket with a comfortable rope handle for easy transport. The rope handle provides a secure grip, reducing hand fatigue and making it easier to carry, even when full of water or supplies. Rusty metal handles are uncomfortable and drip stains.

The Bucket Grate

Dirty water is the enemy of a scratch-free finish. The Bucket Grate sits at the bottom, trapping dirt and debris away from your brush or mitt. This means cleaner water, less risk of swirl marks, and a safer wash for your boat’s finish. The raised grid platform design allows dirt to settle below the washing area, keeping your tools cleaner for longer. That’s how professionals keep their surfaces spotless—by making sure their water stays clean.

The Bucket Seat / Lid

Dual-purpose functionality is key. The Bucket Seat / Lid transforms the bucket into a comfortable seat, making detailing jobs less of a backbreaker. It also doubles as a storage cover, keeping your supplies secure when not in use.

The Bucket Caddy

No more digging around for misplaced tools! The removable Bucket Caddy provides organized compartments for brushes, soap, and other essentials, ensuring everything is within reach. With a quick lift, you can access the bucket below without disrupting your workflow. The caddy’s ergonomic design includes built-in drainage holes, preventing water buildup and keeping your supplies dry between uses. When your tools are organized, your job gets done faster.

The Smarter Way to Clean

The Shurhold One Bucket System is the efficiency boost you need. It saves time, keeps tools clean, and organizes supplies. With a gritguard, caddy, and seat lid, it makes boat detailing easier. Clean like a pro—visit Shurhold.com!

HARMAN RELEASES NEW MARINE SOUND BAR

HARMAN International Industries, the premier connected technologies company for marine, automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, announced today the launch of the JBL RALLYBAR for the marine market.

Offered in two sizes, the 21-inch long RALLYBAR S and the 35inch long RALLYBAR XL. Both soundbars are built to withstand the harsh marine environment and are equipped with marine grade 2.75-inch woofers, one-inch tweeters and passive radiators which with Harman’s extraordinary tuning allows for bass response like no other sound system available.

The S model includes eight marine-grade speakers (four woofers, two tweeters, and two radiators), and is powered by a built in DSP with a class D 150Wrms amplifier.

The XL model has ten marine-grade speakers (eight woofers, two tweeters, and four radiators, allowing for bass response of an 10-inch subwoofer) and is powered by a built-in DSP with a class D 300Wrms amplifier. For lighting effects, it has built-in RGB LED lighting modes.

Both models of sound bar incorporate Bluetooth (BT 5.3), USB input and 3.5mm aux-in and aux-out.

They can be used as a standalone audio system or can be incorporated into existing audio systems through Bluetooth or the Aux input. No matter the application the RALLYBARs can be linked together via Bluetooth with Harman’s proprietary PartyMode allowing connectivity to as many that are in range for a bigger party at the sandbar or on the dock.

The durable extruded aluminum body is IP66 rated, making RALLYBAR impervious to mud and water. Its innovative mounting kit is designed for a variety of installation options. With a compact footprint, it can be pedestal, hard top or tower mounted without interfering with head clearance or line of sight. For RIBs, small center consols or pontoons it can be an all-inone audio solution, while on larger vessels it can supplement exiting audio systems or add a “captain only” system for the flybridge.

“The RALLYBAR is rugged, attractive and brings the party to any outdoor activity,” said Kent Jopling, Senior Global Sales Manager, Special Markets. “Whether at the sandbar or accompanying your wake boarding adventure it provides the perfect soundtrack to your time on the water.”

The RALLYBAR S, and RALLYBAR XL are available in either white or black at a suggested retail price of $649.99 to $999.99. For more information on Harman Kardon or JBL full lines of marine audio products, please visit www.harman.com, www.jbl.com or contact them at HarmanMarine@harman.com.
