A NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER

In early November we debuted the inaugural issue of Scuttlebutt Gulf Coast. Thank you to so many who stopped by our booth at the Fort Myers Boat Show to take a copy and share your enthusiasm for the launch. If you’re attending the Charlotte County, Gulf Coast Boating and Marine Expo, St Petersburg or Naples Boat Shows, please stop by our booth and say hello.

It has been a long last quarter of 2024 for SW Florida. The boating communities from Tampa down to Marco were all affected from Helene and Milton in various ways with some gone completely and others breathing a sigh of relief to only have received a small amount of water on their properties. It’s going to take time . . . again to make it back but with a lot of lessons learned from Ian many were able to get operations back quickly and for those that have not, many are still open with repairs taking place during business hours. Make sure and support these marinas and businesses as they are open. You'll just have to pardon the dust as they work to get back to whole as quickly as they can.

This issue's Destination feature is Tampa. January in particular is a great month in Tampa with Gasparilla taking place, a boater's favorite and a must see from a boat (bring your bow cannon) as well as the many things to see and do for boaters from the Riverwalk, Armature Works, Ybor City and more. Tampa is a vibrant boating city with many things to take in so be sure to check out the feature.

There are two things that happen every January that get boaters excited. It’s the start of the boat show season and a new year of fresh designs, colors and innovations of New Boat Models. We’ve included lots of information on all sorts of different boats, you’re likely to find one or more you’ll fall in love with and want for your own.

Thanks for reading and remember, If you’d like to see a topic or destination covered drop us a line at editorial@scuttlebutt. com. Each issue you’ll find new things being added as we grow, be sure to keep an eye on our digital and social extensions and enjoy the issue.

AQUILA: POWER CATAMARAN HERITAGE

ANCIENT ENGINEERING

The recorded history of catamarans goes back to the Austronesian peoples who migrated from Taiwan to the islands of the India and Pacific Oceans circa 3000 to 1500 BCE. Their expansion continued for centuries, stretching from Easter Island to the east, Madagascar to the west, and New Zealand to the south. They may have even reached the west coast of the Americas.

Fast forward a few thousand years, and power catamarans have become the fastest-growing segment of the yachting industry, offering diverse sizes and styles for both monohull boaters and catamaran enthusiasts.

Power cats have several distinct advantages over mono-hull boats:

STABILITY & COMFORT

The dual-hull design of catamarans minimizes rolling and pitching motions, resulting in a smoother, safer ride, especially in rough seas. Air pressure between the hulls provide lift and cushioning so catamarans tend to ride over the water more than knife through it. The wide footprint also provides greater stability.

SPACE

Boats are often categorized by length which can be misleading. Monohull boats taper to a point, which means space on and below deck gets narrower towards the stern. On a catamaran, this space constriction does not happen. The wide beam allows for multiple cabins, spacious lounging areas, and ample storage. To achieve a similar amount of interior space, a monohull typically needs to be about 20% longer to achieve similar ‘size’ in terms of livable space.

MANEUVERABILITY

Twin hull configuration and shallow draft makes catamarans easier to handle in tight situations, such as docking or navigating channels and inlets. The engines are placed further apart from each other, allowing for easier maneuverability than monohulls. And the shallow draft helps catamarans reach idyllic shallowwater locations monohulls cannot, allowing you to anchor closer to shore.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Catamarans experience less water resistance and improved hydrodynamics, reducing fuel consumption. At low to moderate speeds, a lightweight catamaran hull experiences resistance to passage through water that is approximately proportional to its

speed. A displacement monohull, by comparison, experiences resistance that is at least the square of its speed. This means that a catamaran would require four times the power to double its speed, whereas a monohull would require eight times the power to double its speed.

KROPF INDUSTRIAL DELIVERS FIRST ALLELECTRIC TRAVEL LIFT

Kropf Industrial, manufacturer of the industry-leading Conolift line of boat handling equipment, is excited to announce that its first all-electric travel lift is now in service at a Yacht Club in Ontario. The advanced design has eliminated both the diesel power unit and the hydraulic system, yielding a simplified machine that is quiet, and free from emissions and the risk of spills.

A first for North America, this all-electric lift with a capacity of 40 tons has already been through a rigorous testing program at Kropf’s facility. It is now being utilized by a Toronto-area marine facility for their haulout and launch operations, providing opportunities for final refinements and demonstrating the performance of the unit in a range of conditions. To date, the lift has exceeded expectations for ease of use, reliability, battery life, and low charging times.

The all-electric design of this lift has completely eliminated both the internal-combustion engine, and the hydraulic system, which eliminates both emissions and the need for fluids and oils. Reliable, proven technologies were utilized throughout the design, ensuring safe, long-term operations and ease of maintenance and service. The low-voltage battery packs are safe, proven, and easy to maintain.

The lift is a fully-featured machine with all of the options available on a diesel-powered unit, including proportional controls, two-speed winches, sling positioners, and fully radio-remote operation. Diagnostics, machine status updates, and service are simplified through use of a large external touchscreen, and the machine can be remotely diagnosed and serviced through connection to a wifi network.

The advanced all-electric design is paired with Conolift’s proven fabrication methods, robust design, and high-quality finishes. The machine offers quiet and safe operation without emissions, without the risk of spills, and with lower service requirements than a traditional diesel/hydraulic unit.

MOTHER NATURE CAN BE DEVASTATING

Give yourself a fighting chance with Boat Lift Lock

First Came the Problem: Boat owner seeks device to stop damaging movement during storm. That was the question Keith was asking himself in September 2022, as Hurricane Ian barreled toward Ft. Myers, Florida. After 35 years of solving problems as an installation specialist for an equipment manufacturer, he faced a problem for which he could not find a ready-made solution — how to keep his boat from moving in the lift in high winds. There was no device on the market that would meet his requirements for superior construction, reliable performance, and ease of operation.

A New Product Is Born

The intention of the Boat Lift Lock system was to develop an easily deployable system to secure the entire boat lift to pilings and help hold the boat in position in high wind and tidal surge events. We essentially wanted to give homeowners a fighting chance when boats could not be removed from lifts. The whole system can be deployed in around 5 minutes with no tools required at all. Boat Lift Lock Patent Pending design forms a rigid, solid structure to help stop the boat lift from moving.

Preparing Your Boat for a Storm

What you won’t find on the Coast Guard checklist, or in most articles written about preparing your boat for a hurricane, is information about how to prepare your boat lift for a hurricane. With the Boat Lift Lock, it’s as easy as raising your boat on the lift and using the already installed adjustable arms to pin your boat lift in place. Even if you choose to remove your boat to offsite storage, you’ll want to secure your lift. That will help prevent damage to it or to your pilings from wind-driven movement.

My boat lift is different from others

We have multiple patent pending systems that cover all boat lift types. Our standard system for full access to all sections of the lift and pilings, modified side mounts for lifts where access to normal position will not work, extra strong system for the oversized lifts and our latest system “OPLS” Outer Piling Locking System which was designed specifically for people that have no access to the outside of their lifts. OPLS automatically engages the outer pilings to form a solid rigid system for your boat lift. This system combined with our patent pending turnbuckle arms provides a rigid system to keep boat lifts and pilings from moving during storms. All our systems deploy in less than 5 minutes, can be locked for added theft protection and require no tools for deployment.

Built to last, easy to operate

Designed and is manufactured proudly by us here in the USA. All materials used are marine grade to support the demanding requirements to last and support during severe weather.

Complete customer satisfaction is our goal! We want to make sure you are using the Boat Lift Lock to its fullest potential. We keep records of each installation and follow up with our customers to ensure their complete satisfaction with the product and process. For quotes & other inquiries, call 833-2395222 or email boatliftlock@gmail.com

Visit our website at www.boatliftlock.com for more information on how to secure your Boat Lift Lock system. We have something for every boat lift!

REQUIREMENTS TO GET YOUR US COAST GUARD CAPTAINS LICENSE OR TO RENEW A LICENSE!

Hey there, fellow mariners, mates, and aspiring boaters!

I’m Captain Casey, and I’ve had the privilege of being in the maritime industry since 1988 and working as a licensed captain since 1993. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to “help mariners navigate the maze” of getting licensed and staying upto-date in this field.

In Part 1 of this series, we talked about who needs or wants a license and how it can be a great stepping stone—whether you want to become a more skilled boater or pursue a professional maritime career.

The rules and regulations for obtaining or renewing a license change every 2-3 years, and sometimes even the application forms get updated. I also mentioned that we’re one of the few Merchant Mariner Credentialing Agents around who can assist you with any questions or help you through the process.

Recent changes have been very positive—especially for licensed captains who may have lost their credentials in the past few months due to hurricanes in Florida.

Now, in Part 2 of this series, we’ll dive into what you need to know if you're applying for your original license for the first time, or if you’re renewing your license (even if it’s been expired for more than a year!).

Important info to keep in mind: The National Maritime Center (which issues your license) is currently taking about 8-10 weeks to process original license applications. But here's a pro tip: you can apply for your license before taking a class to get the process started early. Many people who already have jobs lined up do this to avoid delays.

New

License Requirements (as of November

2024)

1. Application: This includes your personal info (name, SSN, address), as well as any criminal background info if applicable. This step takes about 15 minutes.

2. Coast Guard Physical: This includes a general physical, eye exam, hearing test, and color vision check. Did you know you can still get a captain’s license even if you’re color-blind? The Coast Guard may issue a waiver that limits your operations to daylight hours only. The Captain School even has a doctor who comes in 2-3 times a week to fill out the 10-page form and conduct all the tests for only $80. (Time required: around 20 minutes.)

3. TWIC Card: This card costs about $125, and it serves as both your Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (for maritime use) and TSA Pre-Check (for airports). It’s also where the Coast Guard takes your fingerprints and photo for your

Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC). (Estimated time: less than 30 minutes for both.)

4. Panel 5 Drug Test: This is a mandatory drug test required for all applicants. It costs $80 and can be done at the same place as your TWIC card application.

5. First Aid/CPR Course: You’ll need to complete a First Aid/CPR course at an approved facility like the Red Cross or American Heart Association, within the last year. The certificate must include the US Coast Guard course code.

6. Sea-Service Forms: To qualify for a license, you’ll need to show proof of 360 days of sea time. This can be on your own boat (with some restrictions) or someone else’s. You must have at least 90 days in the last 3 years, but you can count days all the way back to when you were 16 years old. This is often one of the more complex requirements, but don’t worry—we offer 1-on-1 help with this!

7. Captain School Diploma: After successfully completing a course, the school will issue you a certificate (or diploma), which gets added to your application, so you don’t need to take additional tests. The diploma is valid for 1 year, and we recommend completing your application during class so you have qualified help at hand.

Renewal of a License

For licensed captains renewing their license (which is required every 5 years), the process is pretty similar to applying for an original license. The main differences are that you don’t need to renew your TWIC card or show proof of a First Aid/CPR course.

Options for renewing your license include:

- Showing 360 days of sea time since your license was issued.

- Providing proof of completing a one-day renewal course.

- Taking an open-book exam covering Rules of the Road, Deck General, and Deck Safety.

What’s New?

In the past, your license was valid for 5 years with a 1-year grace period for renewal. But as of mid-2024, you can now renew your license even if it’s expired for up to 5 years, without needing to retake the course! You still have to meet the other requirements (like sea time, physicals, and drug screening), but no more mandatory classes.

Also, if you have the towing or sailing auxiliary courses on your license, it will automatically renew every 5 years, even if you haven’t been involved in any sailing or towing operations.

This article covers the basics, but we know there are always more questions when it comes to getting your license or renewing it. And remember, the one thing you’ll always hear from the Captain School and its instructors is, "If you don’t call me… I can’t help you!" So don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any guidance.

NEBO Introduces Larry 500 FLEX: A Compact, 500-Lumen Work Light Perfect for Outdoor Adventures

Few things are as frustrating as gathering all your gear for an outdoor adventure, only to discover that the lighting source is too big and bulky.

Between fishing tackle and bait, hiking or camping supplies, ammunition, land management tools, or other needs, fitting a large flashlight powered by huge, clunky batteries into a backpack or tackle box can be difficult at best and nearly impossible. Sometimes, what’s called for is a compact light that can carry the weight of a larger lighting source in a smaller package.

NEBO has just such a light with their new Larry 500 FLEX, a compact, 500-lumen work light that utilizes Flex-Power Technology. That allows the light to be powered by an included 10850 USB rechargeable or 2 AAA batteries. It weighs a mere half of a pound and is just over six inches long, fitting easily into a pocket or a work pouch.

The Larry 500 FLEX is equipped with a steel pocket clip and a powerful magnetic base for convenient hands-free lighting. It features five light modes ranging from a 500-lumen white mode to a 4-lumen red hazard light using the rechargeable battery. It also features five modes when powered by 2 AAA batteries, ranging from 150 lumens of white to 8 lumens of red.

The Larry 500 FLEX is constructed from anodized aircraft aluminum, uses Smart Power Control™, has dimming and memory recall, and comes with an ergonomic rubberized grip that is easy to hold on to. It’s also IPX7 waterproof and impactresistant, making it tough and durable for any situation it’s needed for.

In short, when you need a compact, versatile, handy, and durable light for the outdoors, the Larry 500 FLEX is the perfect choice.
