Artists who understand how to use and manipulate light can showcase rich shadows, spectacular highlights, and attain depth and symbolism. Although light adds life and dimension to a painting, its mechanics and intricacies may be subtle and elusive. This workshop, therefore, focuses on the effect of light and the role light has on color harmony so that artists may produce the most dramatic effects. Light around us dictates shape and form, making this course the cornerstone of what is taught at Scottsdale Artists’ School. Students will examine the tonal and chromatic relationships light creates and will learn how color harmony is achieved. Open to fine artists, illustrators and animators of all levels and all media (oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor), this workshop features live models and still-life setups, both outside and in the studio, as well as landscape references. apinchapong.blogspot.com

Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure

Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us – the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction – the power of the purely visual. PAINT YOUR WAY. Helping other artists exceed their own expectations is one of the most enjoyable things I ever get to do. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting YOUR way, with YOUR voice and vision, but better than ever before. You can paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome. Come be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere and go home ready to create your best work yet. www.davidmichaelslonim.com

Susan and Doug Diehl Design Boot Camp

Robert Henri said “a good painting is a remarkable feat of organization.” Good composition is creating a beautiful and dynamic visual statement through the adaptation of an intentional plan – a coordination of parts to produce a harmonious whole. Students will work on a series of exercises with a variety of mediums and go on an exploration of all the principles of design: proportion, dominance, subordination, movement, creating emphasis, and space. Students will exploit the elements of art: value, line, texture, shape and color in their search for a UNITY OF EFFECT. Students will also come to understand that the viewer can only infer the intent of the painter from the evidence displayed in the design of the painting. www.diehlfineart.com

Landscapes Start to Finish: Create Atmosphere and Light

The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep - a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to go outside and use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own tiny value scale. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed for artists to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. Johanna Harmon

The Inspired Portrait and Figure

This workshop will wake one’s aesthetic voice through the power of observation, simplification and expression. Designed to ease us back into the workshop environment, students will paint the portrait from prints of Old Master’s works or student provided images the first two days, and from live models the balance of the workshop. Students have the option to work from their own source imagery. Harmon will share her understanding of how to define and simplify an interesting concept to its most essential elements, develop strong compositions, describe form, develop a sense of naturalistic color relationships, explore color harmonies, and create varied edges and textures. There will be morning demonstrations including special explorations on “flesh” colors and textures, a brief visual presentation, and individualized instruction throughout. www.johannaharmon.com

Students will also work on achieving clean color in their paintings and utilize value patterns to aid in developing successful compositions. During the workshop, Tim will create a demonstration painting each day and work with students on their paintings throughout the day. Tim will also present slideshows, using examples of his work and the work of others to illustrate key concepts. www.timhornart.com

Eugene Daub

Portrait Sculpture from Photo Reference

Often more energy and commitment are brought to sculpting a loved one or inspirational character. In this workshop students choose who to portray, but there will also be a model for those who wish to work from life. Students of this class may wish to do a relief portrait instead of, or in addition to, a three-dimensional portrait. Images are easily obtained, but it is critical to choose suitable photos that show structural information. While many students like to work from iPads, Eugene prefers photocopies which allow several variations to be seen at a glance. Eugene provides a guide in advance of the class to describe what to look for in a photo. The guide will also offer suggestions for taking photos of the subject and avoiding problems that happen with lighting and distortion. eugenedaub.com

Gregg Kreutz

Oil Painting Essentials

Drawing on lessons from his book, Gregg will teach the key factors in getting paintings to come to life. Factors such as how to create drama and depth, how to make the paint dynamic, how to give vibrancy to the light, and other critical issues will be taught through portrait, figure, and still life painting. Kreutz, a celebrated painter and teacher at New York’s Art Students League, believes that a handson familiarity with different genres helps painters gain proficiency with whatever subject they choose to paint. Mastering core principles and learning the essentials expands the painter’s options. www.greggkreutz.com

Frank Eber Beyond Technique: Finding Individual Expression

In this workshop the individual artist’s expression will be encouraged while balancing the forces at play in the creation of a painting. Frank continues the tradition of the 20th century California Barbizon movement creating intimate, softly expressive works painted with a limited palette – suggestive rather than detailed. Topics will include design and composition, color and lighting, simplification of shapes and atmospheric effects, transcending the watercolor medium. Students should have an understanding of simple one-point perspective, be able to paint a watercolor wash, and should have an understanding of the watercolor medium. www.frankeber.com

Flowers are like people. They move, they breathe, they have their own personalities. Mary will take you into the world of painting these living objects of beauty. Learn how to set up a floral-based still life and how to capture the beauty of the flower both individually and as part of an overall combination. Mary will explore the world of flower painting from an aesthetic as well as technical point of view. Joseph Lorusso Constructing a Painting in the Studio

In this workshop, Joseph will guide students through his process for constructing a painting in the studio setting. The workshop will be structured to show the various phases a painting goes through from conception to completion. Joseph will guide students in a step-by-step process that encompasses the proper use of materials. He will speak on the proper use of photo reference, how to develop a concept as a tool for storytelling, as well as the technical challenges on how to compose and design a painting. Joseph will work one-on-one, as well as paint along with students in order to demonstrate his process. Students will primarily work from appropriate photographs provided by the instructor, each working in the same process as Joseph does in his studio setting. The goal of the workshop is to complete one to two full-sized paintings within the week. A class critique will be given on the final afternoon. www.josephlorussofineart.com

Robert Moore Principles of Painting

This workshop is an intense four days of inspiration, hard work and productive learning. The main principles Moore covers are design, color, composition, and edges. Beginning with slide lectures in the morning, he isolates each element with the help of computer technology and focuses on a different principle each day. Lectures are followed by painting exercises and/or demonstrations of the principles being taught. Students are encouraged to apply lessons to subject matter of their choice, whether landscapes, still life, or figure. Exercises are geared toward learning the principles, not toward producing a finished painting. Demos will be in oil. www.rmoorefineart.com

Rose Frantzen

The Figure: Arriving at Full Color

This advanced workshop will explore Alla Prima painting in a progressive study from bold, accurate, monochromatic structure, reinterpreting this into color temperature, followed by relating these practices to a sensitive full-color understanding. There will be two short and one longer demo, along with a great deal of one-on-one instruction at the easel. This intensive workshop will also avail students opportunities for open discussions of questions that sincere, passionate figural painters encounter. Students will be asked to explore what they wish to bring to their paintings of the figure. They will use the model as a conduit for discovering what painting problems (e.g. drawing, anatomy, paint quality, color, edges), or perhaps, what conceptual questions and creative directions intrigue them. Together with Rose, students will navigate what it is to be a painter who strives to be an artist. www.oldcityhallgallery.com

“When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting flows from this.” – Mark Boedges This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. www.markboedges.com

Kim English Quick Sketch Figure Painting

Kim professes, “Immediacy is important not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint.” In this workshop, students will concentrate on developing their ability to paint quickly and accurately, a skill that can be useful in many situations. Students will work from models in natural situations (chatting, playing music, walking around, but not strictly “posed”) both indoors and outdoors. The goal of this workshop is not to create a finished painting, but numerous very quick, spontaneous, yet controlled studies.

This workshop is an intense class with Simon illustrating the concepts as he moves through the body parts. It will empower students’ drawing and will increase their understanding and freedom to manipulate the figure in space. Students will create an anatomy textbook of their own, forever a useful resource. The workshop will reinforce the understanding and use of anatomy in the future work of each student. One-Way Trip to Composing Sculpture

March 1-3, 2023

Wednesday-Friday

Water-based Clay/ All Levels $445 + $60 Model Fee/ 3 Days

Composition is often mistaken for design. Designing is thoughtfully organizing placement- it requires an experienced, educated, intelligent eye, taste and certain elegance. Composing is none of the above. It’s transcending the raw experience and observation, living it all again in a new, unknown form. Composing is a much more carnal, visceral, unruly process, whereas design is much more planned, logical and ruled. Making the block of clay exude emotions is composing - that is the art of sculpting. The workshop will focus on observing the model and sculpting what students have not seen before. Simon will teach students how to breathe emotions into the clay and how to truly experience sculpting.

Quick Sketch Portraits with a Limited Palette

Gaining the ability to work quickly and precisely is key to development as a painter. Alla Prima painting with a timer forces one to simplify and focus on big shapes. This is the secret behind all great work. In this workshop. Dominique will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruct each session. Students will work with a systematic technique and use a limited palette of seven colors – a chromatic palette that will help refine their understanding of color relationships. The focus will be on the four main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge. Practicing this way will sharpen the student’s observation and take skills to the next level. www.dominiquemedici.com

Douglas Fryer

The Power of Ambiguity

The information an artist edits out or obscures, or ideas they imply, is frequently what is of most value in a work of art. It is difficult to define in a painting what we can’t quite find words for. It is a mystery to us, but we return to it because we are engaged by the uncertainty. An artist makes choices regarding the interpretation and presentation of the subject: its emotion, concept, and forms. This workshop will reinforce an understanding of composition, tone theory and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. The artist may be very inventive in regards to their observations of nature, reflecting on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the importance of content, symbol and abstraction. Appropriate for intermediate to advanced painters with interest in realism or abstraction. www.douglasfryer.blogspot.com

Ron Hicks

Tapping Into Your Inner Voice

Have you ever wondered if what you’re doing in your work as an artist is truly what you’re supposed to be doing? This workshop is intended to serve as a vehicle to aid in finding your path (Ron will not be demoing) and will open up dialogue and explore creative ways to meet this challenge. It’s about feeding the soul. The purpose of this workshop is not about the utilization of tools or learning specific painting techniques, but about finding out who we are as artists and allowing that discovery to play a role in what we intuitively express in our artwork. Designed for intermediate to advanced students, this class is open to all levels. www.ronhicks.com

Chauncey Homer Equine Painting

This five-day workshop is designed to improve painting skills and help the student develop a personal style. Mr. Homer will demonstrate how to go beyond merely copying a photo by adding drama and mood. Although the focus will be on painting horses, the principles learned will apply to all subjects. Students will explore the principles of realism, abstraction, and impressionism and do exercises that will develop expressive brushwork and be shown how to render minute detail. This will help build range in their work. Emphasis will be on accurate drawing, values, edges, “keying in” a painting, and on finishing techniques including glazing, scumbling, and working over a dry painting. Since most students will be at different skill levels, Mr. Homer will make sure that each student receives individual attention and instruction. www.chaunceyhomer.com

– 1 –This is an amazing art book with great recipes and anamazing recipe book with great art. This cookbook willinspire you to create whether in the kitchen or the studio. So, use all the colors of your palette to plate up a deliciousmasterpiece! January 2020 arrived and the vague chats about a ScottsdaleArtist School Cookbook congealed into reality, quicklybecoming a project that required a committee, a commitmentand a conversation. How might we best design a bookthat would not only be a cookbook, but as importantly,an art book? How do we design a book which reflects themultitalented group of artists, teachers, staff and supportersof our beloved School? The book’s creators were determined to tell the School’sstory, share its unique culture, illustrate the remarkable diversity of talent, offer family favorite recipes and illustratethe hospitality and generosity of the School’s population. Our gratitude goes to Norm LaZar our Cookbook CommitteeChair whose passion and perseverance brought this bookto fruition, to Patty Ehrlich our Cookbook Co-Chair, andto the entire committee who donated their time, talents andmonies. Thank you to friends and family who graciouslycontributed to the initial cookbook fund. Your generosityhas allowed us to cover the cost of publication whichin turn makes the sale of each book pure income for theSchool. Most of all, we are so grateful to the visual andculinary artists for
glorious
