David Michael Slonim Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure
Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us – the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction – the power of the purely visual. PAINT YOUR WAY. Helping other artists exceed their own expectations is one of the most enjoyable things I ever get to do. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting YOUR way, with YOUR voice and vision, but better than ever before. You can paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome. Come be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere and go home ready to create your best work yet. www.davidmichaelslonim.com

Students will work on a series of exercises with a variety of mediums and go on an exploration of all the principles of design: proportion, dominance, subordination, movement, creating emphasis, and space. Students will exploit the elements of art: value, line, texture, shape and color in their search for a UNITY OF EFFECT. Students will also come to understand that the viewer can only infer the intent of the painter from the evidence displayed in the design of the painting.

Doug Diehl Landscapes Start to Finish: Create Atmosphere and Light
The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep - a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to go outside and use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own tiny value scale. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed for artists to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. Students will be painting from photos during the three-day workshop. www.diehlfineart.com

Natalie Featherston Trompe l’oeil Painting
This workshop will explore foundational oil painting skills through the genre of trompe l’oeil, where paintings deceive the eye by making a flat surface appear three-dimensional and hyper-realistic. We will discuss the history of trompe l’oeil with a focus on subject and methods, and students will design and paint their own trompe l’oeil pieces over the course of five days. Students will learn practical techniques in creating the most convincing illusion of light, form and depth.

Christine Debrosky A Sense of Light in Pastel Landscape
Painting the landscape is so much more than rendering the elements. Trees, rocks, water, streets, gardens and mountains do all convey a sense of place, but it is a sense of natural light that makes it all come to life. The soft hush of dawn, the charm of dappled light, the shrouded mystery of an overcast day, the dazzle of desert high noon are all possible once you know some tried and true techniques and insights. Explore this all-important aspect through hands-on guidance in an encouraging, insightful and engaging workshop. www.christinedebrosky.com

Robert Lemler Drawing and Painting the Figurative Subject
Drawing is fundamentally important to the student interested in painting portraits, nude and costumed subjects. Working from life is always preferable. Studio time will be divided equally between the practices of drawing and painting. Students will work from the model, both nude and costumed. The first half of the class will focus on figure drawing. Academic concepts of “comparative measurement”, “generalized proportions” and “tonal modeling” will be addressed in lecture and practice. The remainder of the class will be devoted to painting the model both nude and costumed. The topics of design, color mixing, color temperature and paint application will be discussed. Students will paint both warm and cool lit subjects. This class is open to all levels of experience. Students will receive lots of individualized support. www.robertlemler.com
David Shevlino Alla Prima Portrait and Figure
This class is about alla prima painting of the figure and portrait, and techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to the model. The class will work on a different painting/ pose each day of the workshop and learn to simplify, interpreting the subject as a series of basic shapes and planes described by light and shadow. In addition to discussing technical concepts like value, color, paint application and basic proportions of the head and figure, we’ll also talk about some of the psychological aspects of learning to paint, such as giving ourselves permission to experiment and make mistakes so that we can learn and discover ways to become better, more creative artists. Eugene Daub Portrait Sculpture from Photo Reference
Often more energy and commitment are brought to sculpting a loved one or inspirational character. In this workshop students choose who to portray, but there will also be a model for those who wish to work from life. Students of this class may wish to do a relief portrait instead of, or in addition to, a three-dimensional portrait. Images are easily obtained, but it is critical to choose suitable photos that show structural information. While many students like to work from iPads, Eugene prefers photocopies which allow several variations to be seen at a glance. Eugene provides a guide in advance of the class to describe what to look for in a photo. The guide will also offer suggestions for taking photos of the subject and avoiding problems that happen with lighting and distortion. eugenedaub.com

Mark Boedges Plein Air with Mark Boedges
“When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting flows from this.” – Mark Boedges This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. www.markboedges.com
