Anatomy and Drawing
February 25-27, 2023 Saturday-Monday Drawing/ All Levels $445 + $60 Model Fee/ 3 Days This anatomy class is a must for all artists, working in any medium. Simon covers each body part, not medical dissection, but conceptually, toward an understanding of movement and form for the needs of the artist: how a joint moves, how far you can “push” it for expressions’ sake, and when you will “break” it. This workshop is an intense class with Simon illustrating the concepts as he moves through the body parts. It will empower students’ drawing and will increase their understanding and freedom to manipulate the figure in space. Students will create an anatomy textbook of their own, forever a useful resource. The workshop will reinforce the understanding and use of anatomy in the future work of each student. Simon will show students how to be happy with the way they draw. Students can use pencil, chalk, charcoal, brush, stick, or anything that leaves a mark on paper.

One-Way Trip to Composing Sculpture
March 1-3, 2023 Wednesday-Friday Water-based Clay/ All Levels $445 + $60 Model Fee/ 3 Days Composition is often mistaken for design. Designing is thoughtfully organizing placement- it requires an experienced, educated, intelligent eye, taste and certain elegance. Composing is none of the above. It’s transcending the raw experience and observation, living it all again in a new, unknown form. Composing is a much more carnal, visceral, unruly process, whereas design is much more planned, logical and ruled. Making the block of clay exude emotions is composing - that is the art of sculpting. The workshop will focus on observing the model and sculpting what students have not seen before. Simon will teach students how to breathe emotions into the clay and how to truly experience sculpting.

Douglas Fryer The Power of Ambiguity
The information an artist edits out or obscures, or ideas they imply, is frequently what is of most value in a work of art. It is difficult to define in a painting what we can’t quite find words for. It is a mystery to us, but we return to it because we are engaged by the uncertainty. An artist makes choices regarding the interpretation and presentation of the subject: its emotion, concept, and forms. This workshop will reinforce an understanding of composition, tone theory and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. The artist may be very inventive in regards to their observations of nature, reflecting on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the importance of content, symbol and abstraction. Appropriate for intermediate to advanced painters with interest in realism or abstraction. www.douglasfryer.blogspot.com
