SCLAA National Chairman - Amanda O'Brien Amanda O'Brien is the National Chairman of the SCLAA. Amanda is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne.

As we head towards the end of 2017 it is timely to reflect on what has been an exhilarating year for the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia.

The Association has completed another successful financial year and indeed calendar year, with hard working Divisions in New South Wales, ACT / Southern NSW, Victoria / Tasmania, South Australia / Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia, each Division consisting of a State President and Committee.

The principal activities of the Association during the past financial year were to provide high quality membership services and to advance the interests of Supply Chain and Logistics professionals, industry and practitioners in Australia. The Association held 76 events across Australia in this year which culminated in the Annual Australia Supply Chain and Logistics Award – the only annual National Supply Chain and Logistics Awards run by an Association.

In its 57th year these prestigious awards are the most highly recognized in the industry and were held at the iconic Luna Park Sydney on 17 November. Congratulations to all the Award winners and high commendation recipients. It was fantastic to receive so many submissions, particularly those from new, innovative companies. Our awards continue to grow in attendance and interest and no doubt 2018 will be a major event that the supply chain industry will want to continue to support and be involved in. Dr John Gattorna, who is at the forefront of supply chain thought leadership in the world today, and the winner of the 2016 Industry Excellence Award, gave an inspirational and insightful speech on the night. He is one of an exclusive group of individuals and teams who, over many years, have made a major contribution to the global supply chain industry.

The SCLAA also continues to extend the ability for members to attend events in the Asia Pacific region through the Asia Pacific Logistics Federation.

Membership numbers have continued to increase with new Individual, National Partner, Corporate, Regional, Future Leaders, Students and Overseas Membership all ahead of budget. Our new National Partners, as well as our long standing National Partners 2

who have shown tremendous support of the Association during 2017, have continued to work closely with us and have enabled us to drive new initiatives and functional collaboration across Australia.

The Association has worked diligently on growing memberships of both SME and large company segments but, more importantly, increasing the level of cooperation between our valued members and partners. The Association has continued to attract young members in the Future Leaders program, widen the revenue base and continue to run regular quality events in every State and Territory of Australia.

The Board and its committees have continued to work toward it’s long term objectives to be the Association of Choice for the advancement of Supply Chain and Logistics in Australia and earlier this year, as part of our growth strategy, the Board developed a new strategic plan to address the sustainable growth across multiple areas of competency with the goal of driving competitive advantage in the Supply Chain industry. The National Board continues to drive strategy, and is truly representative of all Divisions across Australia and believes in inclusive, honest, transparent and open leadership.

The new strategic plan has created an environment that has encouraged cross State collaboration, enabled a greater ability to make decisions together and drive a new strategic vision that would take us to a new way of doing things in an evolving market-place.

This vision was reworked with total agreement and input from the Board. Diversity is being driven by encouraging young women to join the committees, have their say, give input and work with their male peers to advance the Association. Partnerships with other organisations have provided the opportunity to drive different networking opportunities, to increase our exposure and promote membership. Work on updating the SCLAA Constitution continues and the proposed changes will enable different skill sets and interested parties to join the Board, changing from out dated structures that do not currently served the changing dynamics of the environment.

Early in the year planned initiatives were implemented to drive revenue from different streams; to concentrate on key areas

that will drive financial benefit to the association; to increase our platform and promote a unique educational platform for young members; and, to start developing our media platforms more vigorously to improve our brand and presence. Targets and responsibility will continue to be drivers set by our team and more communication with the States with regard to financial transparency, including regular communication on financial affairs, has been implemented.

Also included in the new Strategic Plan are the enhancement of the image, reenergising the Association and promoting the National Association as an organisation that works together across borders; to respect and encourage peoples open opinions on how to make the Association better believing that everyone has something to bring to the table and input essential to achievement; to enhance the experience of our members and maintain what we have during the rebuilding phase during a very tumultuous and competitive market. Working with our key National Partners, Corporate and Individual members will drive this forward.

During 2017, the SCLAA has actively implemented ways to increase diversity amongst our ranks.

It is no surprise that the supply chain is adapting and changing globally, particularly in relation to technological advancements, speed and further trade lanes opening up, economies of scale expanding and regulatory requirements increasing.

The need for expertise and diverse talent and skills in more areas than ever before has become increasingly evident and we will continue to pursue that talent in our Association. Throughout 2017 the Board has implemented strategies to reduce expenses but more importantly increase its communication with Partners and, as a result, has improved the value and ROI for our respected partners and challenged its ideas of how to grow the Association and adapt to challenging market conditions.

In 2018 the Board will also make an exciting announcement regarding our newly formed Advisory Taskforce Committee.

This sub-committee will work in conjunction with the Board to drive greater initiatives for our members through their expertise in all fields within the Supply Chain. The sub-committee will support the Strategic Plan and goals of SCLAA and will assist the Board to ensure that continued capability and insight into the ever changing market place will enable us to leverage and engage wider networks and drive even more value for our large membership base. We look forward to announcing the key representatives in the New Year.

There have been many quality and informative events during the year. In November we held the Women in Logistics event at Leonda by the Yarra, where we had high calibre speakers and significant interest has been expressed in next year’s event, which

is on track to break our previous attendance records. Diversity is an important business issue and this is something we will continue to drive into 2018.

The Association is working towards ensuring women are encouraged to participate through education training and mentoring programs and continue to grow the numbers of talented young females pursuing male dominated fields in the supply chain industry.

Two of our esteemed Board members have left their positions on the Board. David Rogers (Past Chairman and Independent Director of the Board) and Danny Busija (Past Director and Victorian Representative of the Board) have both undoubtedly given a great contribution, a wealth of knowledge and considerable personal time to the SCLAA over many years. As new chapters are written in the Association history in 2018, it is timely that we acknowledge the significant contribution that David and Danny made over their years of service.

Two new Independent Directors have been elected to the SCLAA Board, Patrick Ingenegeren and Erica Gilcrist, both of whom will bring valuable experience and knowledge to the Association. Our new Victorian Representative is Dan Esdaile who will also join our Board in 2018. I am also pleased to announce that SCLAA Director Joshua has been appointed as SCLAA Vice President and that Peter Hollins will continue to serve as a Director and the SCLAA Secretary.

Throughout the year there have been too many highlights to mention but a few that have undoubtedly been standouts are Women in Logistics 2017 and our coveted and successful ASCL Awards held in Sydney. SCLAA also signed a 5 year Partnership Agreement with the Australian Institute of Business. The partnership with AIB is an important milestone and will greatly enhance the SCLAA awareness in the growing educational sector.

AIB currently have onboard senior executives from organizations like the Australian Marketing Institute, Monash Health, NSW Treasury Corporation, LinkedIn Australia and the Asia Pacific.

SCLAA joined The University of Sydney in holding its esteemed Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies awards in May in Sydney.

I was privileged to be asked by Professor David Hensher and Behnam Fahimnia (Winner of the 2016 Training, Education and Development Award at the 2016 ASCL Awards) to represent SCLAA as guest speaker and present an award on the evening. The event celebrated high achieving students in both University and Industry programs and the SCLAA looks forward to continuing and strengthening our ties with the University of Sydney. This award will be showcased and accredited by the University. SCLAA is proud to now be part of this perpetual award and will be presented again in 2018. We look forward to working on other initiatives with the University throughout the year. Other highlights include the Networking Reception at Parliament of Australia, where SCLAA met key members of Australasia China Cities Summits & Business Forum China. This was a great event meeting with Hon Rowan Ramsey MP & Hon Senator Dr Chris Back and a Chinese delegation headed by Mayor of Yangquan. Since 2009, ACCS/ACBF has already been developed and recognized as the leading summits and forums. The Australasia-China City and Business summit will gave the SCLAA insight into its investment projects, products, and cultural attractions and allowed people from China, Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Island countries the chance to learn about the commercial environment in each others' countries. The SCLAA will continue to work with ACCS&ACBF—CGN. The SCLAA also partnered with Akolade to support the Australian Government Procurement Week being held in Sydney. With budgets tight at a federal, state and local level, strategic procurement has never been more important and this Summit brought together some of the most exciting and innovative case studies – locally and internationally – with keynote presentations from leading public sector CPO’s and interactive panel discussions to address the most significant challenges procurement managers face today.

Having Chaired the successful Women in Procurement Conference in 2017 run by Quest it is evident the professions prowess is becoming increasingly important within the global supply chain sector with AT Kearney, CSIRO, Westpac, Caltex, Mirvac, Dulux Group, Accenture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, NSW Department of Finance Services and Innovation just to name a few strongly represented over the 2 days. The SCLAA will continue to be involved with these initiatives into the New Year.

It is also opportune for the SCLAA to thank Grant Sexton the Managing Director of Leadership Management Australia for their years of valuable support to the Association. Their consistent and generous sponsorship for events such as Women in Logistics and the ASCL Awards continues to provide growth in these important initiatives for industry. Their expertise and team have supported the future leaders of tomorrow and will continue to be a driving force in training in this country.

Thank you to Caroline Chan Head of RMIT for her tireless cooperation and support of the SCLAA. The RMIT School of IT and Logistics and the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) have a long standing relationship focused on driving capability and professionalism of the supply chain industry. In 2018 we will be embarking on exciting industry initiatives and look forward to working with RMIT to grow our already strong partnership. The development of our youth will be key to procuring the best talent within the supply chain industry.

The SCLAA also supported Australia’s largest mining conference IMARC the International Mining and Resources Conference at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. IMARC brought together over 3000 decision makers, mining leaders, policy makers, investors, commodity buyers, technical experts, 4

innovators and educators to hear from over 200 international speakers over 4 days. The SCLAA was pleased to be involved in this prestigious event.

The SCLAA partnered with the 4th Supply Chain Planning & Innovation Summit. With supply chains constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing demands of omni-channel customers, how do you balance efficiency, performance and cost while investing in the right technology and tools required to succeed?

The Supply Chain Planning & Innovation Summit 2017 tackled these challenges combining best practice benchmarking and thought leadership case studies with showcasing the enabling technologies and solutions driving supply chain improvements.

More highlights include WA’s seminar on Making MRO Supply Chains Relevant in a Digital Economy kindly sponsored by Michael Page where exploration of the transformational journey involving advanced planning & scheduling, innovation, disruptive technology, demand driven planning, asset management, predictive analytics, supply chain performance metrics, network design, process improvement and not least the human side of change management towards a world class MRO supply chain where presenters Mike Lomman (General Manager Demand Chain), Indrasen Naidoo (Director of Supply Chain for Roy Hill and Karen Livey (Past President of ASCI WA) gave insightful presentations covering these vast topics, just to name a few.

Our long term valued partners and organizations that continue to contribute to SCLAA’s growing networks are greatly appreciated.

A special thank you goes to John Eletheriou (past SA/NT Director of the Board and Chief ASCL Awards Judge) for his considerable time and expertise in officiating the results for the 2017 Awards and the hard working Judging Panel which included Matt Madsden, Stanley Fan, Gary Pearce and Joshua Holmes. I would like to thank our State Presidents and their Committees for all their hard work in the last year, as well as our Future Leaders Group.

New SCLAA Directors The SCLAA is proud to announce that at the November Board Meeting in Sydney, the SCLAA Board elected two new Independent Directors and the VIC/ TAS Division confirmed the election of their new VIC/TAS Director.

Independent Director – Patrick Ingenegeren Patrick has over 20 years’ experience in supply chain management and logistics across Australia and Europe with extensive industry experience in automotive, marine, retail and OEM specialised electronics. He is a key member of the leadership team of warehousing specialist TT Logistics, has held several senior management positions and taken responsibility for boarder organisational transformation programs. With a passion for sales, client development and driving operational efficiencies Patrick stimulates continuous improvement and is well networked. Businesses are putting a premium on credibility, knowledge of their business and the ability to communicate value and Patrick believes the SCLAA plays an important role in developing supply chain and logistics professionals to meet these expectations. In other words Patrick has a unique understanding of what Australian companies are expecting from their service providers. Patrick holds a bachelor of business and has also held former board positions including the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce Australia.”

Independent Director – Erica Gilcrist Erica Gilcrist has been involved in the Supply Chain and Logistics industry for over 20 years. Originally from Detroit, Michigan (USA), Erica spent the first six years of her career working with General Motors both within the 3PL and 4PL space globally. Her experience spans across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. With expertise in strategic process and business (re) alignment and growth, Erica has worked with/for some of Australia’s leading organisations including Holden, Toll Logistics, Target Australia, Amcor Paper (now Orora), and BlueScope Steel. During her tenure as a private business owner, Erica also sat as Director for Bendigo Community Bank as well as a Regional Delegate on the Mornington Peninsula Tourism Board of Directors. Erica holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Communication from Michigan State University.

SCLAA VIC/TAS Director – Daniel Esdaile Dan is an experienced operations and supply chain leader, and currently a Management Consulting at PwC; he brings multiple years industry and professional services experience across a number of industries including, retail, health, food services & manufacturing, wagering, utilities and finance.Dan has demonstrated expertise in implementing large scale transformation programs with strong experience in designing operating models, developing process, and building & coaching teams to implement.

Prior to PwC, Daniel worked for Australia Post, and StarTrack as an Operations Leader focused on Process Optimisation and Supply Chain Network Planning, and as a Commercial Analyst focused Product Development and M&A. As a Director of the Supply Chain Association of Australia Dan utilises his passion innovating the industry, by developing programs to grow the supply chain community and the capability of leadership; recently developing a mentoring program, and industry collaboration program within Victoria. Dan has a Bachelor of Business - Supply Chain Management.

THE CHANGING FACE OF AUSTRALIAN EMPLOYMENT. THE GIG ECONOMY. With 32 percent of the Australian workforce having engaged in freelance work in the last 3 years, it’s fairly safe to say the ‘gig economy’ is building momentum. The good news is that this new 21st century workforce has some serious benefits for employees and employers alike.

The word ‘gig’ use to be synonymous with musicians. Nowadays, it’s a common term for a much wider audience as more and more Australians choose to earn their living doing ‘gigs’, rather than working a traditional full-time job. Welcome to the ‘gig economy’; a virtual marketplace where people buy and sell their skills and services.

A recent report from PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK estimated that within five years, almost half of Human Resource Managers expect contractors or freelance workers to comprise at least a fifth of their workforce. These are significant numbers.

This trend is not just overseas; here in Australia, a recent study revealed that nearly 4.1 million Australians are partaking in freelance work.

So why are so many saying goodbye to the fixed salary, annual leave and once highly valued company benefits?

In recent years, Vertical Talent has certainly seen a rise in contractors across the Supply Chain and Logistics industry.

One of the key reasons for such a dramatic shift in favour of freelance work is being driven not only by companies but by individuals who want to improve work-life balance over what is possible in most jobs.

They want more control, freedom and autonomy when it comes to work. The gig economy offers independent workers to select only those jobs that they're interested in – and that is quite a change from the traditional employment paradigm. Contracting also provides variety and change – and for some, they enjoy the challenge of new projects and the learning those projects will entail.

Another recent trend has also seen contractors working to fill a role whilst a business searches for a full-time employee. This can allow a significant reduction in productivity loss, especially in those vital roles within a business when a staff member leaves.

The benefits are not just for gig employees themselves companies too are benefiting in a number of ways. Aside from the obvious, such as smaller office space, reduced training requirements and lower permanent staff numbers, companies now have a wider access to talent who might have been too highpriced to maintain on staff full-time.

As good as all this sounds, a word of caution is prudent.

Despite the developing gig economy presenting significant opportunities and benefits–it does not come without a number of inherent challenges, and certainly raises questions about workplace protection and what will constitute a ‘good job’ in the future.

Current employment policies are geared towards protecting permanent employees –not the transitional workforce. Moving forward, Australia will need to develop policies to clarify how gig workers will be treated, including their rights under the law as momentum builds.

Right now, the gig economy looks very much like the future of our workforce.

THE THREE KEY DRIVING FORCES BEHIND EFFECTIVE FIELD MOBILITY When it comes to selecting the right mobile device for your field workforce, return on investment (ROI) is about much more than just the initial cost.

Through evaluating priorities as part of building any field mobility strategy will help ensure the chosen device will deliver what’s needed to be successful.

True ROI calculations must take into account how much the chosen technology has aided the productivity and effectiveness of field workers over the lifetime of the device.

There are numerous consumer-focused smartphones and tablets available today that offer business functionality on tempting terms, but this is not necessarily viable.

Before making a choice between mobile devices, businesses must consider how the device will be used to support field workers and ensure that devices are compatible with all relevant business requirements.

Although over-the-counter smartphones and tablets often appear cheaper than enterprise-grade devices, the reality is they don’t offer the functionality or durability that field workers need. Concerns around security features, robustness in the enterprise environment and battery life are common, as consumer devices are often not built to handle these demands – which can significantly drive up the total cost of ownership.

Zebra’s Field Mobility research indicates that field staff use five or more apps on their mobile devices to carry out their role.

However, in the next 24 months the number of apps is expected to increase to eight or more .

Selecting devices that support this growing range of business requirements and can multitask will enable worker needs to be met, while still maximising efficiency levels.

There are three key driving forces behind effective field mobility:

1. Security:

Mobile solutions need to provide access to controls that will protect the business if the device falls into the wrong hands, and guard against any viruses or non-vetted applications that could compromise the security of data stored on the device.

2. Speed and satisfaction:

The selected mobile device needs to support all applications necessary to facilitate customer satisfaction and real-time reporting, from route planning, through to notifications and reports.

3. Invoicing:

The right device can enable instant signoff for services or delivery, drastically speeding up the invoicing process.

Bulldoze bullying before it becomes problematic

Only 1 in 2 Australian small businesses understand the legal requirements and have a defined action plan to address bullying according to Employsure’s Workplace Safety Index. This figure dips even further in businesses with 2-4 employees, with only 40% knowing how to manage and address bullying in the workplace.

In general, the average bullying case amounts between $17,000 - 24,000 for employers. Legal penalties alone carry a heavy price tag, with as much as $500,000 for a category 3 offence and $3,000,000 for a category 1 offence in some states.

Employsure’s Senior Workplace Relations Adviser Josh Vikis says that small businesses are leaving themselves exposed as bullying can happen in any workplace, regardless of size and industry: “Too few employers are aware of what they can and can’t do when dealing with difficult behaviour in the workplace. They are busy trying to run their business, but not knowing this kind of information leaves a business very vulnerable”.

Three simple steps to minimise the risk of bullying in the workplace.

Step 1: Stay connected.

Consult with employees and health and safety representatives on a regular basis to ensure that all staff are educated on what constitutes bullying and understand that you are available at all times to hear any of their concerns.

Step 3. Communicate, educate and enforce.

Ensure staff are not only aware of the bullying and harassment policy, but take the time to ensure they understand the details of the documents. It is also vital that the policy be enforced across the workplace and that all allegations are taken seriously and dealt with in accordance with the policy. Review and brief staff regularly – make it part of the organisational culture.

Josh says: “Outline the available support and assistance for anyone who feels bullied, so they know who to turn to. In addition, implement workplace values and missions around the behaviours of staff and approach to work which model the standards of the workplace.”

Step 2. Set the standard.

Develop a bullying and harassment policy and communicate this policy to all current and new staff. Outline the behavioural expectations of employees and also include detailed reporting and response procedures for staff, so that there is a clear course of action if bullying does occur.

Further, employers should set the standard with their own approach and take extra care of their language, tone, behaviour, and manner when managing staff to avoid bullying complaints.

Six Disruptive Forces Shaping the Future of Logistics David Rogers - Insync Supply Chain Management The world of logistics is changing rapidly. There are many forces that are emerging which would potentially disrupt the way logistics execution is done. I 'm putting my thoughts on six such forces as a series of blogs starting with this first blog on “Blockchain”. Hope you enjoy reading them.

Force 1: Blockchain in Logistics Risk in the supply chain was once focused on seemingly simple events like a labor unrest shutting down a port for a few hours, a snowstorm slowing traffic, a shortage of workers during flu season or unanticipated holidays and festivals that shut down global operations. But supply chain risk has metastasized in the past decade. Global unrest and security issues; offshoring; a greater reliance on international trade; a 24/7 approach to supply chain management driven in part by the explosion of online commerce; rapidly changing technologies; generational shifts; global economic issues and cyber threats and fraud; lack of trust in processes have lead to increased risk in the supply chain. Many of us yearn for the old days when all we had to worry about was the rumor of a UPS strike, not the cancellation of international treaties and trade agreements.

The need to gain complete control of supply chain transactions has led us in the direction of a key disruption – “Blockchain”. This is a sophisticated and secure digital approach to transactions that were once part of a lengthy, inefficient, and sometimes inaccurate paper trail, quite often done manually and with divergent systems. These inefficient complicated activities would slow down an important shipment by causing interruptions and delays in its journey.

The underlying technology of Blockchain allows for streamlining transactions, increasing intermodal communication, and reducing the chance for fraud and tampering. Bits and bytes have replaced winks and nods…and it is working quite well in the logistics industry as well as in other industries like food and pharmaceuticals. Blockchain provides secure communications between manufacturers, logistics suppliers and third-party partners.

The overriding strength of Blockchain is in its capabilities of recording every action / movement of a shipment - from a supplier’s shipping dock to the customer’s receiving dock… including all of the intermodal carriers and associated intermediaries.

Blockchain essentially creates a ledger of records structured in data groups called blocks, which use secure cryptographic validation to network themselves. Blockchain considerably simplifies the document flow and increases security and the ability to audit. Data is accurate, secure, and transparent as real time information is tied to a specific shipment and is available only to those authorized to view the data and participate in the various stages of that shipment. No one can modify, delete 10

or append any record without the agreement from others on the network. There is no central node. The data is distributed around the network for efficiency and security.

Sean Riley, writing in Supply and Demand Chain Executive (9/1/17), says Blockchain will support the increasingly digital supply chain. New technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 3-D printing and robotics, are fundamentally changing the way goods are produced and distributed. Riley sees Blockchain as a neutral, transparent and unalterable database, living in multiple locations and shared by a community. He foresees Blockchain being applied to global supply chains to facilitate better and more efficient interactions between trading partners.

Riley also notes that transparency is an important attribute of Blockchain technologies. International trade payments, tariffs and taxes depend upon precise documentation. When a document is created for an export shipment and sent to a trade bank or government that exact same documentation format and ledger has to be used for the import portion as well. Any discrepancies allow the import bank to withhold payment until the issues are resolved creating delays that will be magnified due to an increasing amount of global transactions. Blockchain driven Smart contracts will be the norm of the future soon.

According to Riley, the supply chain is becoming increasingly reliant on digital technology to maintain successful operations due to the regulatory environment, complicated maritime law, and evolving commercial codes. An advantage of Blockchain is that no single company in the chain has control. Each member of the network has far better visibility of the total activity, and, with data being updated in real time, the need for record reconciliation is eliminated. Technologies such as Blockchain will continue to streamline the channels of communication and document flow throughout the supply chain.

The benefits of Blockchain in the logistics function are clear. As the technology becomes more widespread throughout the supply chain, more and more companies will need to become active participants. Blockchain saves time and money by strengthening communication, shortening transit times, streamlining complicated paperwork, improving inventory management, and ultimately improving customer satisfaction. In line with this trend, ERP players like Ramco Systems have already developed pilot applications on Blockchain for Logistics Service Providers.

The world seems to be changing fast.

Same sex marriage, equality and diversity, political correctness, social disruption, and innovative technologies are rapidly transforming our lives.

On the other hand, disrespect, unprovoked violence, addictions, mental health issues, antibiotic resistant organisms, new deadly viruses and bacteria, pollution, community breakdowns, unemployment, poverty, unmitigated avarice, and such are seriously impacting many lives.

Bullying and harassment still seem to be thriving in many workplaces. I have had some recent experiences trying to help people I know who are suffering badly from inane bullying and ridicule in work place and social relationships.

I read recently that we are being governed by cliché! Slogans and pretend selfish strategies are not good for our communities.

However, our collective attitude suggests everything should be fixed by Governments and/or other people or organizations.

“Somebody else must fix it.!”.

Well I don’t think so!

Often superficial public statements and actions are aimed at knocking down any opposition or alternative view. Edward de Bono opined that the prevailing theory is “I’m right -you’re wrong”. He suggests in practice, in government, corporate and legal (Court) environments the intent is to win without genuinely searching for the facts. Truth, and Fairness.

Where do you fit in this scenario personally? Where does your workplace stand when bullying, harassment, inequality and unfairness exist? Are you

willing to stand up and be counted?

Do you expect your Governments and business associates to also stand up and reclaim the high ground?

Supply Chains were originally envisaged to be a new way of doing business. That is, moving beyond the old ultra-competitive and secretive business models to a new and transforming collaborative value sharing model. I like to think of Supply Chains as genuine communities utilising all the capabilities and strengths of all participants in the Chain or network.

This necessarily entails all participants sharing in the benefits and suffering no disadvantage.

Is your Supply Chain(s) strategy based on those principles?

I have rarely seen such supply chains in practice. Perhaps it is all too hard! Some bravery is needed to pursue the innovative path.

The good news from my perspective is that everyone of us has the capacity to start the ball rolling in creating a better situation for the next generation. No need to wait on someone else. As Nike might say,” Just do it”.

Let us decide today to abandon negative philosophies. Time now to focus on finding the facts and truth and implementing positive strategies aimed at advancing our communities with a spirit of genuine sharing. What do we really need to do to give every Australian the best chance of living productive, healthy and useful lives?

By the way I note the SCLAA at the AGM recently installed a new Board. Retiring Board Members David Rogers and Danny Busija have participated in developing The Association for many years and I congratulate them on their contribution.

I also welcome new Board Members and trust they will be genuine contributors for the benefit of all constituents in our Supply Chain communities. Next generation thinking, and focus, will be an ongoing expectation.

The past year has certainly brought many challenges around the world.

One outcome is that Refugees are becoming a source of great upheaval in many countries. I am remorseful about the inability to compassionately assist genuine people fleeing war torn homelands, but also understand that fake Refugees and queue jumpers cannot be tolerated. People smugglers must be put out of business. Hopefully common sense, empathy and benevolence will eventually prevail in trouble spots across the globe.

The world is crying out for real authentic leaders to emerge. That is, real statesmen who will pursue needed value generation, resilience, authority, and innovative strategies regardless of their egos. I am battling to see the possibilities of any of the major political parties in Australia unearthing such a leader. Is there one out there somewhere?

This will be my last column for 2017. So, I wish all of you a very Happy and rewarding Christmas. I trust 2018 will bring real joy, health, prosperity and well- being to you and yours.

During the festive season give some thought to those in our communities who are experiencing difficulties and struggling to make ends meet. It can be a cruel time for disadvantaged or isolated people.

Equality is not something to be bestowed by elite members of our society. Martin Luther King would have said it is a god given right.

Division Report

Gary Pearce - ACT/SNW President Friday 17 November was the Annual ASCLA Awards Dinner held at Luna Park Sydney. This year National Mailing and Marketing, a member of the ACT and Southern NSW Division, were the winners of the Supply Chain Management Award. Being up against some high profile national and international companies, General Manager Dennis Ogden was extremely surprised when NMM were announced as this year’s winner. Following on from last year’s High Commendation in the Training, Education & Development category, National Mailing again competed with the very best organisations in the country.

While extremely surprised and honoured to accept the award on behalf of the company’s Directors, Management and Staff, Dennis stated that National Mailing and Marketing were also very proud to be representing the ACT and Southern NSW Division for a second year.

On the 26th of October the ACT and Southern NSW Division held another site visit, this time at TNT’s depot in Hume. For those local members who did not attend, you missed a very good presentation from Wayne Farnhill, TNT’s Cluster Manager NSWSouth, followed by a tour of the facility.

The TNT depot at Hume was purpose built in 2008. TNT moved into the site in November of that year, and now operate some 32 vehicles covering everything from small vans to 8 tonne trucks with tail lifts.

TNT’s Hume depot services all of Canberra, Yass, Bungendore, Braidwood, Cooma, the Alpine districts and surrounding regions, utilising TNT company vehicles and subcontracted agents.

TNT’s Canberra depot has a next day road service to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and also to most NSW regional and country areas. They are the preferred transport partrner for one of our corporate members, who hold them in very high regard.

Many of you would be aware that TNT has recently been acquired

by FedEx. The merger adds to the already impressive portfolio of regions that FedEx services. Being a long term “TNT man”, Wayne stated that it may take him a while to get used to the new corporate colours, but is looking forward to new challenges and opportunities available.

Being State President of the SCLAA (WA) in 2018 has been a pleasure and a privilege! This is in no small part due of to the wonderful industry representatives with whom I had the pleasure of collaborating to deliver a varied and extensive range of events.

We aim to offer you a similar breadth of experiences and membership value in 2018. Watch out for the first event in early February, and particularly for the 2018 Transport, Supply Chain and Logistics Awards in April.

Also it was due to you, the association's members and affiliates who supported these events in large numbers, and with boundless enthusiasm.

Brochures for the latter event will be available shortly.

I'm pleased that in 2017 the SCLAA (WA) was were able to offer more than fifteen events and webinars to its members, ranging from site visits and presentations to webinars and networking opportunities, and of course the Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day (pictured below).

Particularly memorable were July's Roy Hill event at Burswood, the trip to Qantas Catering, Lewis Trigger 'Managing Herbie' and Aldi's presentation at Curtin.

We saw the Toll Express facility at the airport, the Next DC Data Centre, Instant Waste's processing plant and Richgro's amazing environmentally conscious Jandakot centre.

The Awards being run jointly by SCLAA and CILTA will provide a great opportunity for you to reward showcase your organisation's talent and achievements, and also an excellent advertising and sponsorship opportunity.

At the event at the Matilda Bay Restaurant, Senior Government officials will witness the presentation of awards in the following categories: Innovation, Excellence in Transport, Supply Chain and Logistics, Excellence in Training and Professional Development and most notably the Young Professional. On Friday 17th November, the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia, in conjunction with Dematic, LMA, Xtreme Freight and Australian Border Force Programme announced the winners of the 2017 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards at the iconic Luna Park, Sydney.

These prestigious awards have been held annually for the last 57 years by the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA). The awards provide a fantastic opportunity for people and companies that are involved in the supply chain industry to celebrate and be recognised for their particular contribution, success and hard work.

A record number of entries were received this year and were of an exceptionally high calibre. Those who attended the ASCL Awards Gala Dinner were from across the Asia Pacific, including New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam.

2017 Information Technology and Management Award Information remains the most important requirement of any supply chain. Information technology is where the majority of supply chain improvements have been made.

The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM.

2017 International Supply Chain Award

Recognises and acknowledges outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual currently engaged across the supply chain industry. Persons nominated for this most prestigious award will be leaders and will have made significant change to the way a supply chain is managed and improved either academically, physically or technologically.

This is a new Award and one that recognises Supply Chains know no boundaries. NORTHERN CO-OPERATIVE MEAT COMPANY’S MEAT BUFFER SOLUTION RECOGNISED Northern Co-operative Meat Company Ltd.’s world-first meat processing, buffering, sortation and sequencing solution has been recognised at the 57th Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards, recently held at Luna Park in Sydney.

Northern Co-operative Meat Company Ltd. was awarded the 2017 Information Technology and Management Award by the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), from a strong pool of award entries from across Australia. It also received two highly commended awards in the Supply Chain Management and International Supply Chain Management categories.

Northern Co-operative Meat Company Ltd.’s materials handling solution was developed by Dematic, working in conjunction with Wiley, in response to the increased demand from Asia for Australian red meat, and the need for Australian meat processors to improve their complex distribution and dispatch processes, which have remained highly labour-intensive and inefficient.

At Northern Co-operative Meat Company Ltd., meat cartons leave the boning room and are inducted into the Dematic Multishuttle Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). Integrated conveyors transport cartons through various production processes including lidding, labelling and plate freezing. When frozen, the finished goods are conveyed and inducted into the ASRS, that can accommodate up to 4,300 cartons for automated buffering, order building and sortation.

All materials handling is fully automated and driven by smart location control and routing software, which minimises carton processing and retrieval time. The system has resulted in the elimination of manual handling of frozen cases, full track and trace capabilities, significantly reduced labour, reduced product damage and a smaller system footprint.

Tim Charlton - NSW State President

NSW Update 2017 has been a good year for NSW SCLAA. The NSW committee have worked hard to organise site tours and other opportunities for members and are progressing well to build the foundations for a sustainable offering in NSW.

“Excellent tour, interesting to see actual operations. The presenter was very good to explain the role of the team and the tasks that they cover.”

Last month myself and the NSW committee had the pleasure of cheering on three of our committee members for the 2017 ASCL Future Leaders Award – Kate Fawcett, Patrick Jordan and Primo Danieletto.

Primo was awarded the Future Leaders Award, with Kate receiving a well-deserved High Commendation Award.

What’s been happening?

An update from Adam Dwyer (VP of Marketing) and Carla Seyfferdt (VP of Stakeholder Engagement) As part of administering value in NSW through site tours, our recent tour was well received by attendees, who were both members of the SCLAA and non-members. Special thanks to our hosts who were open to answering questions and sharing insights.

StarTrack National Control Centre: NSW SCLAA event in November was at the StarTrack National Control Centre which provided interesting insights into the organisations ability through technology to monitor, report and improve on daily operations throughout their network of fleet and linehaul performance from a central location.

The room is staffed by specialists and a supervisor who are tasked with monitoring pick-up and delivery performance, linehaul movements and safety observations.

Some of the technology utilised to achieve and manage performance deliverables include CCTV cameras, real-time cognition for fleet drivers, linehaul tracking, flight radar and logistics planner dispatch system. The control centre is an invaluable communications tool that feeds information from all facilities nationally into StarTrack senior business leaders.

How long have you been in the logistics and supply chain industry?

How long have you been in the logistics and supply chain industry?

I’ve been working in the industry for over 10 years - including at a leading earthmoving / mining multinational and a top 3 multinational in interactive entertainment (video games). Most recently I've worked for smaller enterprises - an interesting and challenging contrast.

What is your 'day job'?

I was recently offered a role with software company MIcronet and I'm learning the ropes of the ERP offering HARMONiQ. Part of my role includes scoping initial requirements via the discovery process and subsequent implementation. This has provided a unique opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of companies in various industries including Tile and Stone, fasteners, food, automotive as well as light manufacturing including roofing and building components.

What’s your role in the NSW committee and what are you working on for members?

My role is the lead for marketing which is focused on providing exposure to cutting edge industry events through social media that people in the industry otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

Why did you join SCLAA? I think it is important for people in the logistics and supply chain industry to utilise and share ideas and best practices through networking, ongoing education and industry events. Joining the SCLAA is a great opportunity to fulfil these mentioned ideals with likeminded smart individuals, who have eclectic and interesting skillsets.

2 years, I was in IT before Logistics.

What is your 'day job'?

I am the Logistics Projects Manager for Rexel Holdings Australia. I manage projects ranging from supplier rollouts to customer projects and continuous improvement projects. I love change and I love a challenge. I love making things better.

What’s your role in the NSW committee and what are you working on for members?

I work with the Future Leaders program to empower the next generation of Logistics professionals in the building of their careers.

Why did you join SCLAA? I joined the SCLAA because I wanted to meet more people in the industry, I wanted to learn more about logistics and how other companies operate. I also want to make a difference within the industry as a whole.

What's something of interest to you in the logistics and supply chain space?

I am really interested in technology and how it will shape logistics into the future. I am also very interested in the interplay between technology and people and how we can empower people to embrace the change & build sustainable careers within logistics.

What's something of interest to you in the logistics and supply chain space?

Technology has and will continue to improve the way people accomplish things in their life and supply chains are at the forefront of this exponential wave of growth. Software used to automate manual processes and provide smart information at the right time and place are imperative for success at a high level.

Organisations interested in leveraging competitive advantage pursuing a triple bottom line would find an asset like this hard to ignore indeed.

Division Report

Mark Healing - Qld State President The Queensland Division of the Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) and the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) have spent their Christmas Party every year for the last seven years with a twist. The Members pack Foodbank hampers for people who need some assistance from their community at Christmas time.

In 2017 over 150 people packed 1100 hampers for Foodbank to provide to those in need during the holiday season. The hampers included 800 family hampers and 300 ladies packs. The total valuing over $73,000 worth of items that were either donated, or the funds raised for, by the Associations and the wider industry. Over the last seven years, the team has packed 6500 hampers to the value of close to $730,000 for people in need and they look forward to packing even more hampers in 2018. All of industry is invited to donate items to the hampers, funds or attend and participate in the day in 2018.

A very special thanks go to those who contributed so generously to the Hamper Packing this year, All Purpose Transport, Linde Material Handling, Aratara Distributers Pty Ltd, Arnotts, OfficeMax, Orora, Haymans Electrical and Data Suppliers, Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), Colgate, Brisbane Racing Club and John Deere.

A special acknowledgement to Haymans Electrical generous donation of $10,000 and a pledge to continue this next year.

In addition to the hamper packing, those who attended the Hamper Packing enjoyed Christmas carolling, Karaoke and Hamper Packing Time Trials - where the competition was fierce.

The day was summed-up beautifully by a first time young hamper packer who when asked: "How are you enjoying yourself?" responded "Fantastic, this is such a no-brainer not to come next year."

Facilitating exports to China

Australian importers and exporters operating within the Australian Trusted Trader programme will have a competitive edge and better access to global markets under a landmark arrangement with China, our largest trading partner.

The Australia-China Mutual Recognition Arrangement, signed on 27 November 2017, will help further stimulate the important economic and trade relationship between our two countries. Australian exports to China were valued at A$93 billion last year, representing around 28 per cent of total exports; while imports were A$62 billion, representing around 18 per cent. This new arrangement with China is expected to bring an additional A$440 million to our economy over ten years.

Under the new arrangement, Australian exporters that are part of the Australian Trusted Trader programme will benefit from reduced costs, greater certainty and faster and more efficient access to the Chinese market.

China is not the first country we have established a reciprocal arrangement with—we have similar arrangements with New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Canada and Hong Kong. We are also pursuing arrangements with Singapore, the United States of America, Japan and Thailand.

These arrangements reduce the regulatory burden on Australian Trusted Trader exporters and provide a competitive edge, with greater access to international markets.

The Australian Trusted Trader programme, managed by the Australian Border Force (ABF), as Australia’s customs agency, recognises accredited businesses as a trusted member of the international trade community. The programme works by accrediting businesses with compliant trade practices and a secure supply chain. Recognising the integrity of these entities means we can allow Australian Trusted Traders to get on with their business and have fewer hold ups at the border. It also means the ABF can focus more of its efforts on the higher risk entities and managing threats to our borders |1

NEW AUSTRALIA-CHINA INTERNATIONAL TRADE FACILITATION Today the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton and Minister of China Customs Yu Guangzhou, signed a landmark Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) between Australia and the People’s Republic of China (China) at Parliament House.

The signing of the MRA enables the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) to formally recognise each other’s Authorized Economic Operator programmes.

“China is our largest trading partner and this arrangement is expected to bring a benefit of $440 million to Australia’s economy over 10 years,” Mr Dutton said.

Mr Dutton said that MRAs reduce the regulatory burden on Australian business and promote market access for exporters. The MRA with China will provide faster and more efficient access for Australian Trusted Traders (ATT) into the market of our most important trading partner.

“This arrangement will provide Australian and Chinese businesses unprecedented access to trade facilitation benefits and will reduce costs for businesses trading between our two countries, while ensuring the integrity of our border.”

“I encourage Australian business of all sizes to participate in the ATT programme in order to make the most of this exciting opportunity.”

Australia has existing MRAs with New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Canada and Hong Kong, with negotiations underway with other major trading partners.

These arrangements improve Australia’s international trade competitiveness, contribute to economic growth, job creation and investment in the national economy.
