Sue Tomic
ASCLA Chair
Managing Director, Chain Consulting Services, based in Sydney.
It was an honour to warmly welcome you to the 2025 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards. We had over 520 attendees in the room, a record attendance in the beautiful Melbourne Town Hall.
Usually when I deliver the opening welcome, I speak about industry and current issues. We know there have been many during 2025 including trade tariff volatility, geopolitical and local disruptions, and the ongoing labour shortages that have affected our supply chains and trade.
Tonight was different. Instead of speaking about risk, resilience and navigating challenging times, I reflected on my initial journey into supply chain and logistics. At 30,000 feet this morning, I had a bit of an epiphany.
With a background in finance and sustainable business growth and strategy, I landed a CFO role in one of the largest intermodal terminals in Australia back in 2009. As I toured the site that held over 10,000 TEU and handled over 800,000 container movements per annum, it was an impressive sight to drive through kilometres of container stacks. I was really in awe of this import/export supply chain and logistics world.
I commented that the size and scale of the business must mean it is very financially lucrative. The MD said something that has stayed with me and become a personal mode of operation, both in business and life: “It doesn’t matter how big or how many there are (scale), what matters is movement.”
So I want to talk about momentum. It implies softer and steadier progress than the aggressive connotations of business growth, risk, and resilience. Momentum is business critical and applies to all businesses across all sectors. Success in our industry is never about scale and always about movement, whether you operate distribution centres, the largest fleet of trucks in the country, or acres of hardstand for container storage. Momentum matters. It is THE KPI to measure.
The same applies to the data supply chain and logistics. The movement of data, one would hope seamlessly and fully integrated, reaps rewards and efficiencies for all. Double handling of data, lack of transference and transparency. If it doesn’t break the momentum, it certainly slows it down.
A wise person said recently that lack of momentum is not stagnation. It actually means you are going backwards, particularly if your competitors, suppliers and customers are maintaining their own momentum.
The importance of momentum is not just limited to business. Momentum in life is inevitable. It can be the biggest blessing as you face hard times and look forward to their end with a “this too shall pass” outlook. Ironically, I struggle with momentum the most during happy times in life. You try desperately to hold on to the feelings, people, and places that inspire and bring the greatest joy. But nothing stays the same, and that’s a good thing.
In our Association, we have had tremendous momentum in the last four to five years. We have realigned our vision and clarified our purpose, which resulted in our rebranding. We have grown exponentially from 16 partners in 2020 to over 48 today. We have increased our stakeholder partnerships to include the largest conference providers in the country as their association partner of choice. We have increased our media partnerships and collaborate with other industry associations and support local and national charities.
We completed our first acquisition, the digital platform Supply Chain Partners that provides an industry-specific jobs board, directory of goods and service providers in the supply chain and logistics sector, and direct member-to-member connectivity. We achieved our first overseas launch in New Zealand two months ago. We are now rebranding once again to reflect our expansion ambitions and will be known as the Australasian Supply Chain & Logistics Association (ASCLA). We have restructured internally, establishing Special Purpose Committees to align with our strategic pillars.
From when I first joined the Board to now, we have gone from ‘Who are you?’ to ‘You are everywhere.’
But we can only achieve great outcomes with great people. My tenure as Chair ends this year in line with constitutional requirements. And that’s a good thing, keeping in the spirit of momentum. I am incredibly proud of our achievements and the past and present Board and Committee members that helped make it happen. These are the people that uphold the highest standards of governance and integrity. They don’t self-promote or showcase their businesses when in ASCLA mode.
At the centre of it all are people. It’s the people in supply chain and logistics that perform miracles every day that add to Australia’s economic wellbeing and GDP. It’s the people in our association that deliver to our members and partners. Our Corporate Partners and all our Members, I thank you all for your ongoing support. Without you, we could not do what we do.
In case you aren’t aware, ASCLA is a Not for Profit volunteer Association. We operate Divisional committees in each state, facilitating networking events, seminars, webinars. The passion and dedication of all our committee members cannot be applauded enough.
On behalf of the ASCLA Board, I would like to congratulate all the Finalists, Award Winners and Highly Commended for their remarkable achievements. Your dedication and innovation exemplify the best of the supply chain and logistics industry.

Award Inaugurated 2016.

Each year, the panel reserves the right to present a special award. One that recognises a nominee whose work takes supply chain to another level through service or community impact.
This year, we’re proud to present the Judges’ Award to The NSW Rural Fire Service Logistics Team.
Their work in Tasmania earlier this year was an extraordinary display of logistics under pressure. Mobilising a team in response to major bushfire activity in remote terrain where accommodation and basic infrastructure simply didn’t exist.
Within just 72 hours, the team had planned, coordinated, and delivered a fully self-sufficient basecamp for over 100 personnel complete with power, water, food, showers, and shelter.
It was supply-chain excellence in its purest form: delivering capability, care, and resilience where it mattered most.
Congratulations, NSW Rural Fire Service! And thank you for reminding us that at the heart of every supply chain… Is service to others.

In his keynote address, Steve Thompsett delivered a grounded and forwardlooking message centred on a truth that has shaped his 30-year career: “This industry feeds Australia, keeps it safe, and keeps it healthy. It’s built on people, thirty years ago, today, and thirty years from now.” It was a reminder of the scale and significance of the supply chain profession, and of the people whose work keeps the country moving.
Drawing on his experience across decades of structural change, Thompsett highlighted how the sector has evolved from a largely operational function into a strategic pillar of national capability. He spoke to the collective responsibility of the room, service providers, customers, and suppliers, in sustaining an industry worth more than $100 billion to the Australian economy.

Thompsett reflected on the post-pandemic years as some of the most challenging the industry has faced. Inflationary pressure, labour constraints, and unpredictable global conditions have made long-term planning increasingly complex. Yet he emphasised that volatility is not an interruption; it is the new operating environment. “Volatility won’t disappear. Our advantage is the people who can adapt to whatever comes next.” He noted that shifting consumer expectations will continue to test agility. Faster delivery, home-based services, and more personalised fulfilment models place increasing pressure on networks, reinforcing the need for teams who can move quickly and think ahead.
A defining message of Thompsett’s keynote was simple but firm: people come before customers. Not because customers are secondary, but because exceptional customer outcomes depend on engaged, capable teams. “People come before customers. Engaged teams are what create exceptional customer outcomes.” He stressed the importance of identifying emerging leaders early, investing in them meaningfully, and ensuring the industry retains its talent rather than losing skilled people to other sectors. That development, he said, must be deliberate, spanning frontline skill building, middle-management capability, and senior leadership development through both internal programs and external pathways such as TAFEs, universities, and specialist training.
Thompsett addressed the unique challenge of hybrid work in a sector where most of the workforce is frontline. Many industry leaders learned logistics by being physically present, problem-solving alongside teams and absorbing the rhythm of operations day-to-day. Replicating that depth of learning in a partially remote environment requires new thinking and new approaches to capability development.
Turning to customer expectations, Thompsett reinforced that proactive communication is now non-negotiable. “Customers want to know before it happens.” He highlighted the two behaviours that consistently build long-term loyalty: engagement and problem-solving. When organisations anticipate issues early, communicate clearly, and step up when challenges arise, customers remember. “Solve a problem for a customer and they will remember it when the contract renews.” Emotional intelligence, he added, has become a critical leadership skill across the sector. EQ supports collaboration, strengthens relationships, and builds the kind of teams that can handle uncertainty with confidence.
Thompsett closed by acknowledging the collective achievements of the industry, particularly in the last five years of instability, evolving consumer behaviour, and global disruption. He emphasised that those pressures have also created opportunity: a chance for supply chain to demonstrate its value, prove its leadership, and cement its role as an essential national capability. He commended all winners and nominees, underscoring that the path forward remains clear: invest in people, uphold the industry’s value, and continue building the capability that keeps Australia moving.
