NSW News

T

he SCLAA NSW Division recently held a Human Resources centric breakfast, that covered Workcover and other important potential risk and compliance areas for employers. NSW members also recently attended a BioSecurity workshop run by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries. The wider industry concerns regarding delays, red tape and costs were aired and the Department took them on board in an effort to streamline the system for Australian businesses; while at the same time protecting the Country. At the workshop, our members were seated next to someone who directly reported to the Australia Post Chief Executive Off icer, so they took the opportunity verbally, and later in writing, to let him know what SCLAA members thought of the 45% increase in business parcels and satchel pricing since 2009. He indicated that they needed to lift their dividend to the Government and be profitable. He agreed to raise our concerns to the CEO. The unwarranted Australia Post price hikes are hurting SME’s in particular, who are trying to compete with foreign websites, who in some cases have cheaper delivery costs to Australia. The NSW Committee is planning additional events and site visits for 2013 and we encourage suggestions from members as to the types of events or sites they would be interested in attending. Please send us an email at nsw@sclaa.com.au if you are interested in hosting a site visit or speaking at an event.

WA News

T

he SCLAA, WA Division, has had a busy and varied start to 2013. The year started with what is now becoming a regular event, the climate-setting Economic Breakfast. A healthy-sized collection of WA Division members and guests were privileged to hear a breakfast address from Warren Hogan, ANZ’s Chief Economist on the prospects for both global and local economies. Warren has a great talent for presenting graphs and statistics in a captivating way. Among his observations were that globally the appetite for financial risk is on the rise; there is much ‘pent up’ capital in the US waiting to be invested and that 2/3 of global growth in the next five years will be in Asia. In WA he cited population growth and innovation as key industry drivers. Thank you to ANZ for making the event possible.

Also the WA Division further strengthened its links with Curtin University through some of its committee members presenting the Supply Chain and Logistics profession and the SCLAA in its Supply Chain classes. The SCLAA’s developing relationship with Curtin has been fundamental in recent years to the development the industries future leaders and to reinvigorating the association. SCLAA WA Division and APICS members were much in evidence at an Ernst and Young breakfast seminar on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Two of its consultants Wim Hoogedeure and Gaurav Paliwal spoke about how to apply OEE in operational situations. OEE was defined as ‘the difference between theoretical capacity and actual output of a production unit’. Gaurav put OEE in two alternative contexts; seeking to increase throughput, and seeking operational cost reduction. Wim translated the concepts, from mining terms, into a more general supply chain context, to suit the wide range of industry sectors represented at the meeting. Thanks to the presenters and to Ernst and Young for hosting the event. The months ahead look to be just as busy for SCLAA members with a mix of site visits, seminars and the traditional Golf Day and State Awards gatherings.

Industry Internships

he SCLAA, Queensland Division, are work ing with Queensland University of Technology Business School to encourage the industry to consider internships within their workplaces. To be a part of the program, SCLAA Members simply need to send an email advising they are willing to host a Logistics/ Supply Chain Intern. There is no obligation to take an intern every semester. Internships are mostly dependent upon whether the firm/company has a suitable small project available. Examples of projects are, reviewing schedules, training teams on voice-topick technology, writing tenders, changing warehouse layouts, etc. Some students work with one person (company host) over the 120 hours, others move throughout a few departments. The benefits are related to succession planning. Only the highest performing pre-graduate are offered internships.

Host employers interview these students, prior to offering them an internship. QUT covers all insurances and this is an unpaid internship arrangement. In some cases, firms offer Interns contact or fulltime work, post graduation. There is no obligation for firms to create or offer jobs. SCLAA Members already involved in the QUT Logistics Graduate Internship Program include, Mic Thirgood (BCR), Greg Muscat (DP World), Brenda Gallagher (Dunkin Brands), Mark Whitaker (MPM Packaging)...and many more. If you are interested in taking on an intern within your workplace please email qld@sclaa.com.au and request further information on the QUT Internship Program.
