SCLAA National Vice Chair - Sue Tomic Sue Tomic is Director/Principal Consultant for Chain Consulting Services, based in Sydney Appointed to the Board in 2019, Sue is currently SCLAA Vice Chair and Treasurer.

National Response, Local Recovery The devastating Black Summer bushfires saw lives lost and thousands of homes destroyed. Some people had their homes saved, but endured the heartache of unbelievable damage to their properties. Many people were then faced with the overwhelming task of rebuilding and sourcing essential items to help meet their immediate and longterm needs. With its strong network and affiliations with Government, Heads of other industry Associations and directly with the Corporate stakeholders, the SCLAA rolled up its sleeves to directly facilitate the assistance from the Freight, Supply Chain and Logistics industry. The purpose was to achieve the timely and efficient supply and movement of goods to affected areas in the aftermath of the fires. The result was the formation of a core Freight Taskforce, with a centralised Communication conduit (SCLAA) between various Government, NGO’s and agencies working directly with those affected by the fires and the Supply Chain and Freight Industry. This single point of Communication co-ordination facilitated the swift supply and delivery of specific goods/requirements to those in fire affected regional areas.

SCLAA as Connector with What’s needed to who needs it- How we did it: •

Established direct counterpart contacts with various Government, NGO’s and agencies working directly with those affected by the fires. • Received information from these counterparts on what assistance/support was required to facilitate their role in the bushfire recovery. • Disseminated this information to the broad SCLAA network and the networks of other organisations/associations (FTA, Road Freight NSW, Shipping Australia Ltd, AFIF) who have members/contacts with supply chain, logistics and transport within Australia. • SCLAA received all responses and forwarded each response directly to the contact requesting the support. The response and generosity from the Supply Chain, Freight and Logistics Industry was overwhelming - but much welcomed. With the view that water, shelter, food would be first priorities for returning locals to fire devastated areas as well as ground crew facilitating clean up, direct contact was established with stakeholders regarding the provision of: • • • • • • • • •

2

Temporary site offices and Accommodation Units Refabricated Shipping Containers for permanent/semi permanent housing Ablution Blocks Refrigerated & General Purpose Shipping Containers to be used for Storage Water Tanks (ICB’s and bladder lined shipping containers holding up to 20,000 litres ). Transport services for the above-via Road and Rail Warehouse services for consolidation/packing of goods to specific requirements Special purpose fabricated Shipping Containers for food, beverage and general purpose pop up retail service use. (These could be utilized by local business owners for their economic sustainability whilst rebuild takes place) Regional intermodals to be used for consolidation of freight commodities, rail and road servicing, such as the Sada Intermodal in Spring Farm and Goulburn Intermodal for the provision of industrial land to cater for consolidation of goods, interim storage of heavy equipment and dispatch/receival of containerized freight close to regional towns. Bushfire Recovery - One Year On Feedback from Industry and Recipients: It’s heartening to see SCLAA leading the industry to support the unprecedented events which no doubt will take months (perhaps years) to recover. Priyani Withanaarachchi Often once the fires have stopped the clean-up and assistance is ongoing i.e. re-building esp. farm fences etc. providing the logistics / transport support to these volunteers to move the much needed equipment, fence posts, fencing wire and catering for the work crews that spend their weekends helping farmers recover is one of the best ways we can use our collective resources and logistics skills sets to assist those affected in our community - so well done to the SCLAA on this initiative. Nigel Edwards (Director) Dotcom Logistics Pty Ltd. I had the pleasure of being invited by Sue (Tomic) at your recent Awards event and was quite impressed with the (SCLAA) organisation. We could also assist the local organisations on the ground by donating a number of our containers for the transport and/or storage of some essential goods that will later be required in the build-up/recovery efforts of the areas that have been affected. Eddy Declercq (Managing Director) OOCL (Australia) Pty Ltd The Sada Group is happy to work with SCLAA and their associates Sada can assist with freight and logistical services including collection, storage etc of essential items / gear and distribution by both road and rail to regional hubs. I have experienced first hand the fires over the new year period and commend the SCLAA on this initiative. Tony McFadden (CEO) Sada Group AFIF is pleased to assist with promoting this community support initiative to our members. The bushfires have been truly devastating and affected so many people and communities. Well done to SCLAA and your members for the response. Stuart McFarlane, Business Affairs Manager, Australian Federation of International Forwarders (AFIF) Ltd It is great to see the Australian community supporting the bushfire victims. FTA is completely behind this initiative and I will lend my assistance in coordination with our members. Caroline Zalai, Director, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA)

A Few Stories of SCLAA Co-ordinated Support to Resilience NSW and the local recovery BlazeAid Belowra Valley Camp Requirements SCLAA, in conjunction with the Joint Recovery Task Force NSW, assisting BlazeAid with helping Eurobodalla Shire communities and businesses rebuild after the recent bushfires and floods. Setup Assistance of the State Disaster and Donations Logistics Centre (SDDLC) The inception and operation of the State Disaster and Donations Logistics Centre (SDDLC) as a central storage and redistribution centre was used to redirect donated and surplus items impacting on local recovery across many local councils and communities. The Centre was responsible for repurposing and redistribution of these goods to a number of stakeholders across bushfire affected communities. The SCLAA assisted with provisions under tight timeframes to enable the Centre to begin timely operations with the receival and dispatch of goods. Well done to SCLAA National Partner, Toyota Materials Handling for donation of equipment, Jason L Furniture for all office furniture delivery and fitout and to Linfox for supplying pallet racking. I personally had the pleasure of being present at the initial setup of this centre and its final closing which occurred this week. The centre was instrumental in the storage and relocation of goods as and when they were required by Bush fire communities. Overflow goods were donated to local charities. Whilst the immediate bushfire crisis has long ceased in NSW, the rebuilding phase continues, The SCLAA, on behalf of the Supply Chain Industry, looks forward to providing continued assistance to Resilience NSW, associated Government departments, NGO’s and Regional Councils in our collaborative efforts to rebuild devastated communities.

2020 National Mentoring Program Feedback

Ashleigh Molloy (2020 Mentor) The SCLAA 2020 Mentoring program was a great success especially during COVID19. I have made friends for life. We all came together to ride the tidal wave of COVID 19 and we got to know each other through one of the toughest years. I was a Mentor for the 2020 program, and I am proud of Nesli Yotem and Tejas Kalbate who were my mentees. I am proud of everything they have accomplished. I was also a Mentee for the 2020 program, and I would like to thank Alfred Ablaza who took the time to really remind me of my strengths in who I am. A special thanks to all the Mentors who gave their time to the Mentees in achieving their goals. We have two great Leaders on the mentoring committee – Devan and Ryan who were in the background making this program such a success. Thank you to both, I am looking forward to another strong year in the mentoring program. Michael Sponza (2020 Mentee) I was fortunate enough to have Rakesh as my mentor for the SCLAA Mentorship Program in 2020. Coming into the program I was a University student in my last year of study and very new to the whole Supply Chain and Logistics industry. Rakesh provided me with valuable insights and thoughts into the work and projects he conducts through his role as a Supply Chain Manager at La Marzocco, allowing me to see how the theory I have learnt transfers into a real business environment. Rakesh’s guidance and willingness to assist me pursue this interest has resulted in my decision to begin my professional career in this industry and aspire to a role like Rakesh’s one day. It was also this connection through the mentorship program that afforded me the opportunity to work in La Marzocco’s operations team and I look forward to working on future logistics projects with Rakesh. The program has also allowed for me to become more involved in the SCLAA and I am excited to work on the Membership Committee this year. For anyone considering joining the program I would highly recommend they do as it is has proven to me to be a very rewarding and supportive experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the program last year and cannot wait for it to start again in 2021.

SCLAA Newsletter February 2021

Nesli Yontem (2020 Mentee) I have become a member of SCLAA in January 2020. I was not a very active member and did not know where to start. I was a newly graduated International Student, lucky enough to have a full-time role in a big manufacturing company. However, I always have that feeling of needing guidance & being able to ask questions without having concerns. During the hard lockdown, my mentoring sessions were my favourite weekend activity. We had online sessions almost every Saturday. Back in August, I was asked to provide logistics training at my company by the senior management. I was having issues regarding some of the INCOTERMS and could not find any online resource to answer my questions. Ash helped me to clarify all my concerns about INCOTERMS, helped me to sharpen my presentation skills. She shared her experiences, I shared mine, we have learnt so much from each other. I am thrilled to be a part of this association, working with amazing people, learning new things from them. And all started with the Mentoring Program! Avinash Mamtora (2020 Mentor) ‘’Having spent most of my career in an industry that has traditionally considered procurement and supply chain as more of a clerical and trade job, SCLAA came to me as a breath of fresh air. I finally felt at home amongst like-minded professionals, being able to speak the same language and share the same triumphs, opportunities and struggles. And then came an opportunity to join the mentoring program. I was a bit unsure about joining it since I had never mentored anyone before but both Stephen and Rakesh encouraged me to sign up,and oh what a wonderful experience it has been! The entire mentoring program has been a hugely rewarding experience for me and I have come out much better that I went in. The program is very well organised and tailored. So that you get assigned to the right mentor / mentee, someone who can really help you in the areas that you need help. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of registering as a mentor or a mentee for the SCLAA mentorship program to go for it, because you will only emerge having learnt a lot and improved yourself in the process.”

2020 National Mentoring Program Feedback (cont)

2020 Mentor, Hemandra Maharaj (right) with his two Mentees, Imtiaz Ali (L) and Johanna Vergara (R)

Imtiaz Ali (2020 Mentee) Being part of the program has been a wonderful experience! At first, I was lost and did not know what to expect and for a good reason. I had never participated in these kinds of programs before. Much to my surprise, it turned out to be a rather good experience. Raj Chaudhary did an outstanding job in matching me with the right person as my mentor, based on the topics I had put forward in the application form. A job WELL DONE! Hemandra Maharaj did an excellent job while delivering the program as a mentor. He provided me with a lot of support from day one. He also brought other industry experts in our online training sessions which were nice of him. I also got an opportunity to spend a day and half with a 3PL Provider. Training sessions and practical experience has given me a holistic view of different functions in the Supply Chain. He also helped me on different occasions with my job search process which he was not required to do as part of the program. I was not expecting this, but so very grateful for him that he went out of his and helped without asking any expectations. This shows the kind of people you can expect to meet as your mentor, should you choose to join as a mentee in the program. 9

SCLAA Newsletter February 2021

This program was helpful on so many levels as I learned about a variety of topics in transport, logistics, and supply chain overall. We touched a lot on the practical side of things which is what you need to succeed in real life. The topics that we discussed were leadership, procurement, project management, continuous improvement, and safety. Some were new, some I had studied before in my Diploma and other I had come across in my work. We also spent considerable time on me applying for various supply chain roles. Big part of this was working together on refining my approach, resume and developing confidence in reaching out to people. I wish I had joined SCLAA in 2019 and took advantage of this mentee program. Which would have made a massive difference both in my studies and professional development. So - What are you waiting for? Come join us as a member and join the mentee program if you are interested in your professional development. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Yohanna Vergara (2020 Mentee) When I put my application to join as a mentee with SCLAA, I was paired with Hemandra Maharaj. He proved to be a great mentor as he not only took me onboard but another mentee at the same time - which is not an easy task for a busy working professional.

2020 National Mentoring Program Feedback (cont)

He has been a wonderful guy who supported me on my professional journey and helped me with the challenges I was facing when it comes to career and professional development. He helped me on so many occasions and I am very grateful for that. I am so glad that he trusted me throughout the duration of the program and helped me with my job search which was proving very challenging to me when I was doing it all alone by myself. I got the job through one of his contacts and that has been a wonderful experience on its own. If it were not for him, I would not even have access to any of these opportunities. I have been happy in my current role and learning new things - all thanks to him and SCLAA for making this program a reality for us. Halfway along with the program, I also got to meet Imtiaz Ali as we had some common topics to go through with Hemandra. It was another great thing to experience as he and I shared our learnings with our mentor and asked plenty of questions when we were going through those sessions. Finally, I would like to extend my courtesy and gratitude to the SCLAA team who facilitated this program, Cathy-Anne Jones and Hemandra for the support I have received during this time. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to take their skills to the next level or simply want to improve their existing skillset. You will not regret it.

SCLAA Newsletter February 2021

Hemandra Maharaj (2020 Mentor) The SCLAA Mentorship Program is a great initiative. This was a great opportunity for me to give something back to the industry that has forged my career path. Sharing my experiences and taking my mentees on the journey to build their own career path has been thoroughly rewarding. I was paired with Imtiaz Ali and Yohanna Vergara. Both were keen to learn and shared similar passion for supply chain. Key to our success as a group, was building a good relationship and looking at things from a practical aspect. Taking a humanistic and holistic approach to mentoring, inspires and motivates people to learn, to excel and set high but realistic goals. The program allowed us to work at our own pace and it empowered Imtiaz and Yohanna to setup their objectives for the program. Together we learned and shared some wonderful stories but most importantly had fun along the way. I encourage people in the supply chain to be part of this program and think about becoming a mentor and help people with limited supply chain experience to become future leaders.

Straight Talking - David Doherty OAM My inbox is repeatedly inundated with items advising me about the intricacies of Supply Chains, and the myriad ways to improve beyond any expectations. Often those improvement opportunities are dependent it seems on a new software development or consultancy breakthroughs. As a long-term professional/practitioner in the field I am somewhat amused by the rampant suggestions of innovations, and outrageous claims Fair dinkum! With 2020 thankfully behind us I am looking to a more manageable 2021. I want to pursue practical methodologies with focus on genuine shared value generation and meaningful measurable results. For Supply Chains, it means determining their real purpose and relentlessly pursuing collaborative processes. Let me ask you. Have you examined, updated, and formalised the purpose of your Supply Chain(s)? Given the rapidly changing world we inhabit now would be an excellent time to collaborate with your peers to promulgate your lucid Supply Chain(s) purpose statement. I get confused by the multitude of definitions in the cybersphere. Often, particular definitions are driven by commercial objectives of the promoters. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (USA) developed one with genuine intent to educate and universally implement. "Supply Chain Management encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and procurement, conversion, and all logistics management activities. Importantly it also includes coordination and collaboration with channel partners, which can be suppliers, intermediaries, third party service providers, and customers. In essence, supply chain management integrates 14

SCLAA Newsletter February 2021

supply and demand management within and across companies.” In the cut-throat business arena Managers will frequently define the purpose of their Supply Chains in limited short-sighted ways. For example: ”Reduce Inventory”, “Cut Costs”, ‘Cut jobs”, Implement IT Systems/Upgrades/Software”, etc. Of course, you can do these things and maybe wreck the business. The real value is generated when the Supply Chain purpose embraces a whole of business approach for increased value generation. Supply Chains are powerful collaborative processes that aim for seamless flows of materials, goods, information, finance, and such, from point of origin to point of use. No compromises. Individual functional excellence is not a measure of Supply Chain performance. Sharing of the additional value generated is similarly not negotiable. IT and Digital innovations are, and have always been, enablers. My point here is that 2021 must be a year of absolute focus on Supply Chain fundamentals. If we are to recover from the horrendous 2020 (and its related rapidly changing global relations) and thrive in 2021 and beyond, we must rediscover the real purpose of our Supply Chains, and courageously pursue every facet. I fell hopelessly in love with the concepts of Supply Chains many years ago. The flame burns just as bright today for genuine Supply Chains, but not for the pretenders and pretence pedlars. Supply Chain Warriors will be in demand. Join up now! It seems stress is increasing in every aspect of life. Harvard Business Review recently referred to a new research about

dealing with stress in a simple way. The ideas comprised a process involving three daily activities utilising blank cards. Every morning write down on a card: 1. Two things you are going to absolutely focus on today (not a long “to do list”. Two things you WILL focus on) 2. Two things you will ”let go” of today. Things from the past weighing on you that you will let go. 3. Two things you are genuinely grateful for. All of us have stress related issues at some time. It takes courage to admit and even more courage to develop resilience and form an improvement plan. The simple daily regimen has been beneficial for me. Give it a try! I am Zoomed out! I am yearning to sit in face-to-face meetings, go to huge conferences, attend Seminars, and eat and drink with raucous colleagues in packed restaurants. Will it happen 2021? I hope so because it will mean COVID-19 is in retreat. Stay tuned! By The Way: I will be lining up to get vaccinated as soon as it becomes available. Do not listen to the doomsayers. Get the jab!

Vale John Eleftheriou. A good mate, a true gentleman, SCLAA Director, SCLAA SA President, and a Supply Chain Warrior.

WA Division

Brian Lynn - WA State President (At the time of writing) it's great to have emerged from two weeks of lockdown. It was very gratifying to see how seamlessly businesses and the public transitioned to wearing masks, adopted the use of the WA Safe app and generally respected the rapid transition into and out of the more rigorous COVID safe measures. The Supply Chain and Logistics industry has had to be equally flexible in its approach to the various rule changes, border lockdowns etc. All of this has been overlaid in many industry sectors with the increased product demand resulting from online purchasing, panic buying and economic stimulus measures. We at the SCLAA have been mindful when organising events of the ever changing world in which we have been operating. The association nationally was extremely proactive during

Yury Sukhov , SCLAA Future Leaders Group President, presenting at a Post Graduate Seminar at Edith Cowan University

the early stages of lockdown in its organisation of often biweekly webinars that spanned a variety of industry topics as well as simply providing inter-state networking opportunities for its home-based members. The national mentoring program was also a great success. In WA we finished 2020 strongly with the reintroduction of face-to-face networking groups, a thought-provoking multi-industry post grad seminar at Edith Cowan University (including a fantastic presentation from Future Leaders Group President Yury Sukhov of Aldi), and a magnificent Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day. Plans for 2021 include (lockdown permitting) the muchawaited return of site visits, together with the normal program of seminars and networking events. Plans are already in place for the return of the mentoring program and the 2021 Golf Day. Watch the normal channels for more information. As well as discounted entry to events, another huge benefit of SCLAA membership is the opportunity of having a say in how the association runs in your state and nationally. Committee volunteers are very much welcome, with current opportunities available to have input in the areas of event organisation, education and training, the mentorship program, membership and the association’s branding. Contact the association nationally or the State President locally for more information in how to become involved. Brian Lynn WA State President Brian.lynn@sclaa.com.au

• Reduction of risk and the ability to increase investments in mobile productivity and enablement strategies Supply chain and warehousing organizations today are relying more than ever on mobile productivity solutions to keep up with the e-commerce demand and growth. As such, it is becoming increasingly important to provide a consistent look and feel across all devices, whether they leverage the Android, iOS or Windows operating systems. Furthermore, the solutions provide the ability to tailor screens for SAP technologies with optimal end-user components to drive improved productivity. “In a warehouse or factory setting, end users may only need one or two choices,” continued Black. “By altering what is delivered on screen through their SAP applications, organizations can focus the attention of their workers on the task at hand and prevent mistakes which can slow the process considerably. Queensland Division

George Hodgson - QLD State President

I hope you all enjoyed some well-earned rest over the Christmas and New Year period. Well, 2021 has started off where 2020 ended, with a pandemic in full swing, the threat of border closures ever present, and continued new work routines. If the strange year that was 2020 has taught us anything, it is the fact how important Logistics is in the COVID world and a greater appreciation for logistics. Which makes sense when people have become used to ordering anything from the comfort of home to be delivered to the comfort of their home! You can track and trace your item as soon as the item has been ordered, and people love it. Over the last 12 months, I have noticed an increase in the discussion of Logistics within my work place and in social settings (vaccine logistics is a hot topic). People note how important logistics is; they comment on the mode of transport used, and the speed and transparency of their purchases - who would have thought! The upshot is that more people are keen to understand how logistics works. We have had an increase in people looking to join SCLAA, and people looking for industry pathways to work in Logistics. This is great news for us in the Logistics industry, as people are interested in our work and our industry. My thought, is that this interest will be ongoing for the foreseeable future and will no doubt translate into opportunities for us, as SCLAA members as well as the industry as a whole. Certainly exciting times ahead. Now onto the year ahead. Our first networking event took place in January at Brewdog Tap House and was a great success with over 25 people attending. From this success, the Queensland committee has now compiled an exciting event list over the next 12 months, which is being uploaded to the SCLAA website, with monthly networking events, our first site visit in March and a number of planned Logistic Lounges with guest presenters on the event schedule. There are plenty of events for all to join in throughout 2021.

We are also looking to explore events in regional areas such as Toowomba, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, so if you have some ideas or want to help organise an event, please let us know. In the meantime, I wish you all a prosperous 2021, and I look forward to catching up with you at a future event. George Hodgson Queensland State President george.hodgson@sclaa.com.au

Accelerate Supply Chain Transformation Accelerate Supply Chain Transformation

By Brent Gorham, Principle Supply Chain Consultant, Cornerstone Significant supply chain disruption was caused by COVID-19, requiring leaders to review their operations and embrace digital capabilities that protect supply chains against future disruptions as we enter the new reality after COVID-19. Companies from all industry sectors are making strategic investments in advanced technologies - artificial intelligence (AI), to machine learning and intelligent automation – which will accelerate digital transformation across the organisation. Even in the midst of a pandemic, the good news is that a push to accelerate digital transformation will be rewarded by newfound supply chain agility.

Lessons Learned from the Pandemic

Every Disadvantage has its Advantage

As COVID-19 hit, the disruption across supply chain operations (procurement, production, warehousing and distribution) caught companies off-guard, causing major disruption in supply chain operations. Global lockdowns brought domestic, regional, and global supply chains to a halt.

The pandemic allowed the rare opportunity in business operations for a reset.

As COVID-19 hit, few companies had the aligity in their supply chains to weather a disruption of more than a few weeks.

Now is the time to put the focus on the customer centric, data enabled, digital technology that many companies had good intentions to implement prior to COVID-19, but deferred due to business readiness, legacy systems, or other factors.

Supply Chain Management is about two things: 1) reducing complexity, and 2) reducing uncertainty. Implementing new technologies allow a co-existence of digital enablers across the different supply chain processes and activities that can help achieve these two goals. The supply chain strategy is changing from efficiency and low-cost country sourcing, to supply chain resilience and visibility to reduce complexity and uncertainty. The acceleration of digital transformation is key to that new way forward. Supply chain performance matters, this often-overlooked area of a business can make or break corporate performance, accelerated digital transformation has the potential to unlock supply chain capabilities and aligity. Transitioning to a digital supply chain is a paradigm shift that requires rethinking the supply chain from end to end. Taking the necessary steps to enable the supply chain to work toward providing value to the company and its bottom line should be one of a company’s highest priorities. Contact Cornerstone.com.au to accelerate your digital transformation journey.

VIC/TAS Division Rakesh Bandipelli - VIC/TAS State President Welcome to 2021! I would like to start by saying Thank You to all of you for taking time to read this. A year where we all are hoping to be an end for the pandemic and get back living our lives as ‘normal’ as it can be. We absolutely had a fantastic start for this year by connecting with committee members In-Person and discuss our strategy for this year. The meeting went well, and it felt unreal seeing everyone directly after such a long phase of restrictions. All the leadership team bursting with energy, passion and commitment with so many fantastic ideas to execute our strategy this year. Since there’s lot of uncertainty around with restrictions being radically altered, we decided to start first couple of events online which I believe is also safer for all of us well. But we are sure in the process of running on a networking event around late march which will be in person, stay tuned for more details.

VIC/TAS 2021 State Committee

We at SCLAA strongly believe in servant leadership and strive to always have the members and values of the membership at the forefront of our minds in all our planning activities. We are extremely positive and excited for this year since Supply Chain has taken an even more prominent position in our daily lives and with the effect of pandemic, there is more awareness about the industry than ever before. We have plenty of events in the pipeline and hopefully we will be able to bring back our very renowned site tours from mid this year provided no further restrictions. In addition to that we are continuing our strong success with ‘Her Stories’ series led by Vice President Ash Molloy and we have some fantastic panel members lined up for our first episode for 2021 which is currently pencilled in for early March. Mentoring program is another key focus area for this year as we had lot of interest last year and successfully executed the program with lot of great outcomes for both Mentor and Mentee. Please read the Mentoring program Article from this newsletter as it has much more detail on how successful the program went along with some awesome feedback from participants. So, watch this space as we will be soon announcing the dates for registrations, so if you are keen be sure to register. 25

Victorian & Tasmanian Member of the year award This year we introduced the SCLAA Victorian & Tasmanian member of the year award to celebrate excellence in service and leadership for our members within the VIC TAS division. The award is selected by the leadership trio for that year – the VIC TAS Director, President and VicePresident. This year the award went to Jake Lazarus. Jake was the membership lead for 2020 and showed exceptional service and leadership in his role. This year membership was a challenging role with our usual program changed substantially from previous years. Jake had his finger on the pulse throughout the year, presented the committee & leadership team with detailed but easy to understand reports and devised and drove a reach out to the membership program that involved many members of the committee. Reaching out to our membership resulted in more renewals and feedback that enabled us to tweak and improve our program throughout the year. Congratulations Jake – well done!

Pathway to the Future of Customer Satisfaction Linfox blazes a pathway to the future of customer satisfaction with Swisslog AutoStore so secure it’s even chosen by the FBI Swisslog has recently installed the world’s most compact and secure goods-to-person automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), AutoStore at Asia Pacific's largest privatelyowned logistics company, Linfox, to deliver outstandingly speedy and safe service to its client’s customers. The ultra-high density AutoStore system chosen by 3PL leader Linfox for a new beauty products facility at Kemps Creek, Sydney, accommodates more than 20,000 bins of high value product served by 44 robot wheeled bins in an automatic storage and rapid despatch system occupying a floor footprint of just 700 sq m. Compared with conventional non-automated warehousing, AutoStore systems offer a 60% reduction in inventory storage footprint, a 100% increase in picking speed and inventory record accuracy of more than 99%. The highly secure but easily operated system is among the latest of more than 200 AutoStore systems being integrated by Swisslog globally, including one employed by the FBI in the USA to safeguard and efficiently manage millions of paper records in the Agency’s first robotic storage and retrieval warehouse for paper records. Swisslog Australia Managing Director, Mr Francis Meier, says the system is ideal for fast, accurate, secure and clean picking of smaller high-value goods in a greatly reduced space compared with conventional warehousing. The rapidly expandable and adaptable system is ideal, for example, for consumer goods such as sports, fashion, gifts, electronics, beauty and household products, as well as global uses such as medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, high value e-groceries and the huge diversity of personal items in the rapidly expanding retail and ecommerce markets for which hygienic, safe and secure automated despatch is accelerating post-COVID. AutoStore systems are one of a comprehensive portfolio of Swisslog automation systems for different industries and product types and sizes, including ASRS, automatic conveyor and transport systems, picking and palletising solutions, and flexible and intelligent software solutions. Linfox President, Consumer and Healthcare Group, Kylie Fraser, says the system places Linfox “at the very forefront of efficient automation, a subject about which we are passionate because of the benefits it brings our customers.”

More storage in less space Traditional warehousing approaches cannot match the highdensity AutoStore supply storage and picking efficiency. As part of a high-performing consolidated service centre, it is a giant leap toward making supply chain management more efficient, says Mr Meier. Swisslog’s advanced software 26

provides insight into the goods stored with the integrated logistics system. Benefits compared with conventional non-automated warehousing include: • • • • • • • • • • • •

100% increase in picking speed 60% reduction in inventory storage footprint Inventory record accuracy of more than 99%. Faster turnaround times More secure storage (which is important for certain medical or surgical supplies) Easily expandable system Goods-to-person technology – eliminates opportunity for error Flexible design – fits into any existing warehouse Multi-tasking – goods can be simultaneously picked and stocked at the same time Self-optimising – high-frequency bins are automatically organised to expedite picking Controlled access – access to bins is only from ports, reducing product loss Built-in redundancy – each unit and robot operates independently

How RFID is transforming the Supply Chain At the turn of the century, digitalisation was the key to business optimisation, and to a certain extent it still is. The first step in gaining the level of agility needed to capture a performance edge in the “now economy” is to replace pen-andpaper processes with digitalised workflows and ensure data captured across the entire enterprise is readily accessible. However, it is not enough to simply create digital “systems of record.” Greater enterprise intelligence is derived via real-time systems, which instantly gather detailed information such as inventory levels, work-in-progress status, equipment condition and staff locations using the power of radio frequency identification (RFID). RFID can provide far superior speed, accuracy, automation and efficiency compared to traditional barcode scanners in many cases. That is why Zebra is seeing RFID adoption rates climb quickly in warehousing, transportation and the broader supply chain.

Measuring your organisation’s need and readiness for RFID Being able to track the location, condition, timing, accuracy and speed of inventory, equipment and people in near realtime makes it easier to streamline processes and drive more efficient front-line workflows. For example, transportation, logistics and postal service providers can track products at every step of the order stage, from the shop floor or warehouse, right to the customer’s doorstep.

• Are our competitors already addressing such issues successfully and leaving us at a competitive disadvantage? If you said yes to any of the above, it might be time for your organisation to make the move to RFID. Many industry analysts and visionaries may perceive RFID to be “disruptive”. Yet, if executed properly, RFID can prevent disruption to businesses’ operations and therefore lead to better customer experience and cost savings. However, there are some important considerations to make before deploying any RFID solution. Firstly, since a well-implemented RFID solution can touch multiple parts of a business, strong internal coordination among all potential stakeholders is imperative during the planning, testing and implementation phases. Secondly, change management is also critical. A lack of communications across the organisation can stifle adoption and your return on investment (ROI). A simple education of what RFID is, how it works best and what benefit the business is achieving can go a long way in helping employees embrace it wholeheartedly. Lastly, there is no such thing as a standard implementation strategy for RFID, and there is no single “best” RFID solution for all organisations – or even for a particular industry. Find a strategic technology partner that can help you map out an incremental innovation plan to effectively address your challenges and achieve your goals without introducing more risk into your organisation. They can also help you monitor and measure its use and effectiveness and help optimise as needed. Get to know your RFID options

Yet, not every organisation may need RFID – at least not right now. The best way to assess its potential benefit is to understand your organisation’s problems and any issues inhibiting its growth.

There are many different types of RFID antennas, readers, tags and printers to suit every industry and every specific use-case. Zebra has the industry’s broadest RFID portfolio for unmatched accuracy and interoperability.

All supply chain organisations must ask themselves:

Watch these videos to learn more about Zebra’s range of RFID solutions, and download the full RFID portfolio brochure here.

• Are we losing out on opportunities to improve customer service because employees do not have visibility into stock or asset locations? • Are all our resources (employees, material, tools) fully utilised? Or are employees wasting time trying to find items/tools and reconciling erroneous statuses in the system? • Are we incurring higher costs for the sparing of extra materials, tools, conveyance or human resources to compensate for inefficiencies? 27
