5 Key Questions to Ask When Modernizing Your Warehouse Operations

As a matter of fact, decision-makers agree they must implement new technologies to be competitive in the on-demand economy. As a result, they are accelerating technology investment timelines and increasing funding to modernise and/or scale existing projects. Specifically, 95% of decision-makers are increasing their investment in inventory management/asset visibility technology by 2027. Front-line workers have reported positive workplace changes are happening even amid labour shortages, including improved working conditions and new technology to make their jobs easier.

Labour considerations are undeniably significant. Your front-line workers are your most valuable resource. No one has a more immediate view of issues affecting your front line than your staff. Utilise them to solve your operational challenges. Three-quarters of warehouse staff say their employer involves them in decisions related to automating workflows to ensure acceptance, but everyone’s voice should be heard. By having these conversations, warehouse managers may discover a time-saving process or avert an unnecessary expense. Both managers and staff agree that unnecessary tasks should be reduced so front-line workers can focus on customer-centric work

1. What could challenge our operations the most?

3. What outcomes do we desire today and tomorrow?

Part of the process of implementing change is considering what outcomes are desired today and tomorrow. Overall, decision-makers say they need fast and accurate order fulfillment. In the near term, many report their desire for greater team productivity and workflow compliance. Within five years, however, most want to utilise assets more efficiently, provide best-next-move alerts for workers, or operate using data-driven insights. Specifically, 85% of decision-makers will prioritise labour optimisation in their business in the next three years.

2. Is now the right time to make a change?

The latest Zebra Warehousing Vision Study consulted global business leaders and decision-makers about the top five elements in successful warehouse modernisation journeys. Considering trends, risks, and opportunities, Zebra was able to draw insightful connections between what businesses are experiencing and underlying market conditions – learnings that can be applied to any warehouse modernisation journey.

There is never a bad time to implement necessary change.

Over the past two years, there has been a 23% average increase in shipping volumes to businesses and consumers. As such, faster delivery times, increased transportation costs, and a lack of inventory accuracy and visibility are top challenges for most warehouse decision-makers, all resulting from increased e-commerce activity. In turn, there is greater concern placed on returns management and several fulfillment-related outbound operations that have direct impact on customer satisfaction.

The takeaway Businesses must continue to adapt and evolve to remain profitable in an increasingly competitive economy. Implementing necessary change as soon as possible, adapting new technologies, and ensuring worker satisfaction are crucial in easing the most pertinent challenges facing warehouse operations today.

AUG ‘22 technology implementation plans correlate to the challenges, desired outcomes and labour initiatives weighing most heavily on them. Some of the key tech investment areas in warehouses are wearable computers and peripherals, which optimise the use of mobility solutions, automated data capture to increase workflow speed and accuracy, and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), which help ease workers’ physical requirements and workloads, among other benefits. 92% of staff agree that technology advancements will make the warehouse environment more attractive to workers.

Straight Talk from David Doherty OAM David Doherty OAM is a past President and Life Member of the SCLAA and a highly regarded logistican. Send your Straight Talk feedback and comments to davidoh1@optusnet.com.au I have just been on flights Melbourne to Mackay (North Queensland) and return. Four flights in all. Three Airports. Of course, you are waiting to hear about the terrible experi ence with delays, lost luggage, and long slow lines through MyNosecurity.Sir!Virgin Airlines online check in, luggage drop, and then transit through security proved to be quicker and easier than pre Covid. In Melbourne just twelve minutes from Airport en try to arrival at the Departure Gate. Seemed to me Virgin was focusing on customer service. A novel idea in these times! Credit is certainly due to Virgin. Meanwhile over at Qantas I wondered how things were going. For decades I have always specified Qantas as my preferred carrier. Overseas it was always a great comfort to board a Qantas flight home and feel safe in a quality engi neered and maintained airplane, with caring flight crew and genuine service. Covid has done something to the ethos and service mentali ty of the erstwhile Australian icon. Of course, action was needed to ensure the Airline endured the exceptional economic circumstances imposed by the pandemic. However, in hindsight it may be the true purpose of the business was forgotten in pursuing cost and resource reductions. Time for a rethink at the flying kangaroo. Focus ing on quality service, engineering, resources, and facilities is a paramount requirement. Reintroduction of the “old Qantas ethos” throughout the organisation (top to bottom) is a ne cessity. As a long time, loyal Qantas frequent flyer, and onetime elite Qantas Club Member, I want to feel the pride and assurance of travelling once again with our national carrier. I understand that outsourcing inefficiency is one of the is sues with the reported significant baggage handling prob lems. Outsourcing demands that the provider of the services adopt the standards and culture of the primary company.

No argument, no debate, no excuses! In the same vein, have you tried to telephone an airline, a bank, or a telco lately? What a farce! After getting through the recorded intros that eat up a lot of time, you get into the long waiting line for “service” Did I say service? It is a test of endurance to determine if you have the courage to maintain consciousness until a person finally answers. But wait, can you understand the dialect of the call centre person who is keen to reiterate all your personal details before considering the real purpose of your call. It is a sad indictment of management mentality to adopt cost saving measures that ensure customers are diverted, annoyed, and, in fact, failed. Chasing cost reduction as the only objective is a short term pretend strategy. There is an old adage applicable for service organisations. “The customer always comes second!” In essence, it means you must train and develop your cus tomer service people as a priority. They will then be able to deliver the required service to meet customer expectations. Are you listening Qantas? Demand real customer services and performance in your everyday dealings. Do not accept second rate service abuse from organisations that should meet real expectations.

Latest NHVR regulatory advice explores fatigue risks and controls

Consequently, the NHVR is maintaining its focus on growing industry awareness of fatigue risks, providing expert advice, and publishing a range of information resources to support industry to better manage driver fatigue. In the latest of these information resources, the NHVR has published regulatory advice on Fitness to drive: Fatigue. This pro vides guidance to parties in the Chain of Responsibility on managing fatigue in the heavy vehicle transport industry – out lining their obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law and advocating a holistic approach to fatigue management. This regulatory advice takes a look at the hazards and risks associated with fatigue, emphasises the importance of consid ering external factors that may influence the driver’s fatigue risk– not just those related to compliance with regulated work and rest hours – and proposes a range of control measures to ensure the safety of heavy vehicle drivers and other road

When a driver feels sleepy, tired or exhausted, these are all symptoms of fatigue. So too are restlessness, inability to main tain a steady speed, and sore or tired eyes. Fatigue can occur even on a short trip and can severely impair judgement when driving, causing lapses in concentration that could prove fatal.

Thisusers.is the first in a series of three pieces of ‘Fitness to Drive’ guidance that will be delivered through the NHVR’s Regulatory Advice Program. Read more NHVR regulatory advice here.

As a generality, outsourcing functions for which you do not have the ability or skills to effectively manage, or are not central to your main purpose, are reasonable tactics.

Swisslog Tech Tours show how automation is providing resilience to global supply and production issues

“The RWTA and ASKIN were both keen to showcase the industry’s best, so that the future leaders in the Australian cold supply chain can gain inspiration for how to solve the problems of the future. Swisslog is excited to be partnering with these two organisations to showcase our advanced data-driven robotics and automation solutions in local Australian installations,” he said.

Robotics, automation, and intralogistics leader, Swisslog, is joining forces with the Refrigerated Warehouse and Transport Association of Australia (RWTA), and insulated panel specialists, ASKIN, to showcase the most innovative automation solutions, and how they are helping to safeguard operations from global supply and production issues.

The RWTA Frank Vale Tech Tour is named after Frank Vale, a pioneer of the Australian cold storage and Victorian dairy factory industries. The tour took guests to four sites in NSW, Australia, that have implemented automation to set themselves up for heightened flexibility and responsiveness to global issues.

“Australia, like the rest of the world, has felt the impacts of the ongoing Covid pandemic, global tensions, and other impacts on supply chains and product availability. Companies that have advanced automation systems in place have been better positioned to adapt to ever-changing circumstances,” says Swisslog ANZ Head of Sales and Consulting, Cuong Vo.

Frank Vale Tech Tour attendees were a mix of industry professionals in the Australian cold supply chain, who were keen to learn more about automation and how it solves challenges faced by a huge range of industries. The tour visited automation sites including:

• Blum Australia – where guests were given a first-hand view of Swisslog’s Vectura pallet cranes in action. This modular and expandable Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) is providing an attractive ROI, and the flexibility for future automation expansion as the company expands. Custom furniture fitting specialist, Blum, is renowned for its high quality fittings and soft close mechanism found in many major furniture brands.

• Linfox – where guests were shown a Swisslog AutoStore space-saving storage and order picking system for small parts. This ultra-high density AutoStore system accommodates more than 20,000 bins of high value consumer product served by 45 robot wheeled bins in an automatic storage and rapid despatch system occupying a floor footprint of just 700 sq m.

• BevChain – where guests were shown Swisslog’s PowerStore high density pallet system and monorail in action. BevChain delivers tailored beverage supply chain solutions across Australia and New Zealand. It leads the industry with 22 distribution centres across six states, handling more than 2.5 billion serving units annually. Swisslog’s PowerStore solution for BevChain consists of vertical conveyors that accommodate fast and effective pallet movements between levels, RowCarriers that retrieve from, and deliver pallets to, transfer stations at the vertical conveyor, and AisleCarriers that use precision lasers to transport RowCarriers between the vertical conveyor and the designated row.

• Coles – where guests were guided through Swisslog’s buffer chiller mini-load Tornado cranes, separate pallet live storage systems, and KUKA palletising and depalletising robots.

“All these sites gave attendees different insights into the ways automation can boost productivity, and allow flexibility to adapt operations to new changes. Swisslog thanks RWTA and ASKIN for their help and collaboration with this forwardlooking automation industry event,” said Cuong.

The South Australia team were privileged to tour two of Adelaide’s leading businesses in their field. In June we toured Viterra at their Port Adelaide facility. Vitera is a global leader with a fully integrated agriculture network connecting domestic and international consumers. Their business covers the whole supply chain from the farm gate through to the consumer, their grain is of the highest quality with multiple checks throughout the process. We were delighted to see the efficiency of how the grain was freighted into the operation, processed and dispatched onto the boat. The QA process and customer service were exceptional. In June we toured Redarc another SA-owned and operated success story at their Lonsdale facility. Redarc has been designing and manufacturing advanced electron products for almost 43 years. They develop products for industries such as mining and defence but of most interest was their product range for the off-road FWD enthusiast. Their manufacturing and supply chain was impressive, especially how they have had to redesign SKU and adapt due to COVID. We had the privilege of hearing from CEO and owner Anthony Kittle and his family’s journey from humble beginnings.
